Selecting and inserting symbols from a table is a simple but time consuming procedure. Text character table Word editor stuffed with all sorts of rubbish, in which it is simply unthinkable to quickly find the desired icon.

Mr. Unicode allows you to insert printable and non-printable characters and symbols from the keyboard. Unicode character codes (keyboard shortcuts) support almost all text editors, from notepad to Photoshop. In the table of Word symbols, the code of the selected symbol is displayed in a special window (6), see fig.

Apparently, from the words "a set of keys" - half of the inhabitants of the Internet falls into a trance. However, if a person is more than five years old, and he already knows letters and numbers, this is not difficult. Quite the opposite - there is a quiet buzz from the wild time saving. Codes of frequently used symbols can be written out on a piece of paper and stupidly trampled on "Klava", without going into the details of any menus.

To insert the required character or symbol - set the cursor to the desired place in the text, hold down (press, trample, do not release) the "Alt" key and, in the digital part of the "keyboard" - sequentially type the code of the character. Let go of the "Alt" key - the required character will immediately appear in the text.

Some popular symbols:

  • “English double quotes”: 0147 and 0148

A broader picture of an example of using the keyboard when entering characters is given by the Word character table in Unicode:

An example of using a table:
alt + 1 = ☺; alt + 2 = ☻; alt + 3 =; alt + 4 = ♦; alt + 5 = ♣;
alt + 6 = ♠; alt + 7 =.; alt + 8 = ◘; alt + 9 = ○; alt + 10 = ◙; etc.

Find and enable (activate)

right numeric keypad

Numeric Keypad - Right Numeric Keypad on a regular computer keyboard... These keys are assigned functions that are not available on the upper numeric keypad, in particular, input digital code... By default, the right numeric keypad is inactive. To activate the digital block, use the "Num Lock" key. Each repeated pressing of "Num Lock", alternately - activates / deactivates (turns on / off) the right number keys. In laptops (especially netbooks), the right number pad is often missing. Numeric keys, or combined with the main keyboard, or the function of entering numeric codes is carried by other keys on the main unit. Activating key "Num Lock", on laptops - also may not be.
However, the right numeric keypad cannot completely disappear with computer device... It is simply hidden and deactivated for the convenience of the user. Most the right way to find out how to turn on and activate the functions of the right digital block - ask the manufacturer.

An accent mark is inserted in a separate ass in the Word text:

  • Place the cursor after the desired letter
  • We type (print) the symbol code: 0300 or 0301 (tilt left / right).
The numbers of the code will be displayed directly in the text.
Do not touch, do not remove the cursor.

Use Notepad ++ ...

Diameter sign in Word

At the moment, Word does not support the diameter sign, as well as all other text editors. Instead of the classic diameter sign (crossed out circle), it is generally suggested to use the good old crossed out zero: Ø Ø ... Visually, it is practically indistinguishable, and for programmers - one less headache. They (the programmers), and the crossed out zero, came up with something, solely to distinguish the numbers 0 (zero) from the letter O... And then there is this awful diameter mark (crossed out circle), completely indistinguishable from the crossed out zero. For this, the sign of the diameter has sunk into oblivion. The only way to insert into Word text true diameter mark (crossed out circle) - copy it from old documents when this icon was supported text editor... Download: word.zip (downloads: 85) to copy the diameter sign. As for the strikethrough zero, it is entered with a set of keys of the form: "Alt" + 0248 (lower case - ø ), "Alt" + 0216 (uppercase - Ø ). You need to type hot chapters, certainly in the English keyboard layout. Otherwise there will be a letter Sh !!!

You can find an approximately sign on your keyboard exactly in the place where the Russian letter is displayed. But in order to use it, you just need to switch to English language your keyboard. Also, the sign can be copied from symbols and then pasted anywhere, and the symbols can be found along this path:

The character you specified () is called a tilde. So where is the tilde on the keyboard? You can find this key in the left upper corner, usually the button is located under with the esc key... The button is square, the mother-in-law has a letter on it.

To write this character, you can simply switch the keyboard layout to English and press Shift and this key. You can see its exact location below.

I read that in some editors it is enough to press Alt and = simultaneously. But I can't.

I also found information that Alt + 247 (on the Num-keyboard) will give the desired character, but this did not work either:

In the end, I found another way how to find the symbol is approximately equal:

Go to Start -> All programs -> Standard -> Service -> Character table.

Find the symbol you want, select it and copy.

Then move the cursor to the desired place where you wanted to insert the symbol, and press the combination Ctrl+ C. And this is what happens:

On the keyboard, the approximately ( about) on any of the keys you will not find. Indeed, single sign called tilde on clave there is, but it is on the same key with the letter (to type it, you need to change the language to English). But you must admit that the tilde is not at all what we need.

And although the approximately does not appear on the keyboard, you can still type it without complicated transitions through the Start button. In order to display the icon, you need to use a special numerical code.

Try it in Word do the following: hold down the button Alt and hold e, and with the other hand we deduce + and then the code 008776 and we get the required sign.

    Alt + + + 008776 =

The sign written by the user Irinka - the picture using the Shift key + the letter key (in the English layout) - this is the tilde which does not mean approximately equal to ...

There is a very simple way to put a sign without a keyboard. It is enough to press START, then ALL PROGRAMS, then STANDARD - OFFICE - TABLE OF SYMBOLS... Find the sign you need there (in in this case, approximately equal to , that is), copy it and paste it into desired text... And you don't need to bother with this sign. And with the Alt key I could not find such a sign, or maybe I was looking badly.

To indicate that the value is approximate, it is not necessary to put two wavy lines. For such a semantic load, a tilde is perfect, which is located on the keyboard in a row with numbers (above letters) and occupies the leftmost key.

To print it, you need to switch the language to English and hold down the Shift press the tilde button. You should have the following mark.

There is no such sign (symbol) on the keyboard. Approximately equal to; - these are two wavy lines, one above the other located. On the keyboard, however, there is only a symbol with one such dash. It is called a tilde, under Esc is located. Divides one key with a letter.

There is no icon on the keyboard.

There is only an icon wavy line(order sign), on a key in the Russian layout. First you need to change the layout to English.

The symbol of approximate equality is on the symbol table. There it can be found and copied.

On the regular keyboard the sign is in the same place as the letter, only the language must be English. No matter how much I puffed, I never managed to type such a double sign approximately, so you can simply copy it and use it for health. You can read more about the characters on the keyboard here.

Adding a Unicode Character Using Code

As mentioned above, Unicode characters have one important advantage... It consists in the possibility of adding characters not only through the window "Symbol", but also from the keyboard. To do this, you must enter the Unicode character code (indicated in the window "Symbol" In chapter "The code"), and then press the key combination.

Obviously, it is impossible to memorize all the codes of these signs, but the most necessary, often used ones can be learned exactly, well, or at least written down somewhere and kept at hand.

1. Click the left mouse button where you want to add a Unicode character.

2. Enter the Unicode character code.

Note: The Unicode character code in Word always contains letters, you must enter them in the English layout capital case(large).

3. Without moving the cursor from this place, press the keys "ALT + X".

4. A Unicode character will appear at the location you specified.

That's all, now you know how to insert special characters, symbols or Unicode characters into Microsoft Word. We wish you positive results and high productivity in work and training.

A checkbox (or "checkmark") symbol, fraction, or other symbol can easily be inserted into Word documents, PowerPoint presentations and Excel workbooks.

The most important thing to understand is that when inserting characters, fractions, special characters, or international characters critical value has the font you are using. Not all fonts contain the same characters, for example, Elephant does not contain fractional characters, while Verdana does. Thus, it is very important to use the correct font in order to find the right symbol or sign you want.

What do you want to insert?

If you want to use ASCII characters or Unicode characters to insert characters from the keyboard, see:.

These are static symbols. If you want interactive check boxes that you can select and deselect, see Add check boxes or radio buttons (Excel) or Create a checklist in Word.

A symbol such as currency (¥), music (♫), or flags (✔)

Advice: If you want to make your character larger or smaller, select it and use the Font size option.

A special character such as em dashes or paragraph marks (§)

Fractions (1/3, 2/5)

Some fractions (1/4, 1/2 and 3/4) are automatically replaced with the corresponding characters (¼, ½, ¾) as you type. The others, however, remain the same (1/3, 2/3, 1/5, etc.), so if you want to insert them as symbols, you will need to use the symbol insertion process.

Only a small number of common fractions have symbols that can be substituted. For more unusual fractions such as 8/9, you can approximate the value of a character by specifying the numerator as superscript and the denominator as subscript. additional information see Insert superscript or subscript text.

International characters such as ¿or ü

If you plan to enter text in other languages, we recommend switching the keyboard layout to the language of your choice. For more information, see the article Turn on or switch the keyboard layout language.

There are almost always keyboard shortcuts for individual characters in Office. For instance:

CTRL + SHIFT + ALT +? serves to insert ¿

CTRL + SHIFT + ~: After entering "a" allows you to insert ã.

CTRL + SHIFT +: After typing "u" allows you to insert ü.

The complete guide on using the keyboard to insert international characters, see the article: Inserting letters of national alphabets using keyboard shortcuts.

Insert a checkbox or other character using the keyboard using ASCII and Unicode codes

You can also enter the character code for a character as a keyboard shortcut. Characters and special characters are inserted using ASCII or Unicode codes. You can specify which of the two codes to use when searching for a character code.

Go to the tab Insert in the feed and click Symbol > Other symbols, just like when you are about to insert a symbol using a dialog box.

Scroll up or down the list to find the character you want; note that you may need to change the font or subset to find it.

Advice: The Segoe UI Symbol font contains a very large set of Unicode characters to choose from.

At the bottom right you will see fields Sign code and from:... The character code is what you need to enter to insert this character from the keyboard, and from: tells you what the symbol will be. If from: reports "Unicode (hex)", which is a Unicode character. If from: says "Symbol (Decimal)" is an ASCII character.

Inserting Unicode Characters

Enter the character code where you want to insert the Unicode character.

Press Alt + X to convert the code to a character.

Advice:

If you don't get the character you expected, make sure the correct font is selected.

If you place your Unicode character immediately after another character, for example, if you use the 0300 code immediately after the letter "a" and receive the word "a0300", Word may think that you are trying to insert a character with a 5-digit code - "a0300" ... But if you just wanted to use the code 0300, which is converted to a character, you can select 0300 with the mouse before clicking ALT keys+ X. Then Word converts only the selected text - 0300 - to a character (in this case "à").

Insert ASCII characters

Notes:

To do this, you must use the numeric keypad; you cannot enter the code using the keys at the top of the keyboard. Make sure the NUM LOCK button is pressed.

All codes ASCII characters contain four digits. If the code for the character you want is less than four digits, you must add leading zeros to get the correct code length. For example: 249 should be entered as 0249, 85 as 0085, etc.

Important: Don't skip step 1, otherwise you might get a wrong character when pasting in the code.

Do not forget to change the font back to the original one after inserting the symbol.
