Can iPhones get wet?

The iPhone 6 or 6s, like any other electronic digital device, must be kept away from water, otherwise there is a high probability of a serious breakdown, the repair of which can be very expensive in the future. There is no special protection against moisture on such a device, and if the user flooded it, then water ingress is not limited to the upper part of the case - it penetrates inside and oxidizes all vital parts.

What to do if the iPhone 6s, 6 fell into the water

If, nevertheless, the iPhone 6s fell into the water and got wet, then the first thing to do is to get it out as soon as possible. The faster the smartphone is in a dry place, the less consequences there will be. As soon as the gadget is removed from the water, you need to inspect it and dry it.

If the user dropped his smartphone into the water and noticed it only after a long time, then it will be very problematic and expensive to save such a drowned gadget, since the corrosion process is most likely started.

How to dry?

First of all, the gadget that got into the water should be put on a clean, dry surface and left for at least a day. The next day, you can inspect the phone and try to evaluate its performance.

As practice shows, a gadget that just dripped or accidentally spilled water will work fine. The same cannot be said about a smartphone that has sunk and is completely wet, including internal parts. If the iPhone 6 fell into the water, it will need a deep cleaning and, possibly, the replacement of some elements, which must be done in the service. Find out more about iPhone 6s repair.

Wet iPhone Problems

If the smartphone turns on after drying, then this is a good sign, perhaps there is a chance to do without a visit to the service center. When the device is fully loaded, you need to check the camera, speaker, microphone and connectors. Visually inspecting the connector is quite difficult, so you should connect the charger and make sure that charging is in progress. If the charging process has not started, then most likely moisture has got into the connector, and the smartphone needs to be repaired.

Many users ask the question - iPhone 6s fell into the water, what should I do if it turns on, but it does not work well and constantly freezes? There is only one solution here - take it to a service where specialists will establish the cause and help restore the smartphone. The price for iPhone restoration will depend on which item was damaged.

Also, frequent consequences of water ingress are the appearance of stripes on the screen. Read more about what to do if, read on our website.

What to do if there are drops of water under the glass?

Also, some users are interested in how to fix the situation if the iPhone 6 fell into the water, what to do when liquid got under the glass.

The fact is that the display on the iPhone is designed in such a way that it will not work to remove it yourself. This requires special tools. Therefore, the only thing left to do is to take the phone to a service center as soon as possible.

Despite the fact that the sixth iPhones have appeared quite recently, some owners have already accidentally drowned their gadgets. In the first minutes after moisture gets under the cover of the iPhone 6, you can somehow reduce the damage, but there is nothing you can do about the damage that the water has already caused - you will have to send it in for repair. Flooded iPhones, most often, can be repaired and sometimes not even very expensive. In this post, we will tell you how the diagnosis and repair of "drowned" in service centers is carried out.

Service Center Apple repair Macplus.com, kindly provided us with a detailed report on the repair of a flooded iPhone 6. We look, sympathize and remember what your gadget will have to face after meeting with water.

So, a flooded iPhone 6 was brought to the workshop, and it was flooded for a long time, about a day ago, and completely unresponsive to any actions.

To begin with, the master took apart the “drowned man” by unscrewing two screws at the base of the iPhone 6 and lifting the display module. Inside, the gadget is very similar to the previous 5s model.

iPhone 6 disassembly

After parsing, the cable is disconnected from the motherboard, and the module opens to the side for the time being.

In general, when water enters the smartphone, the motherboard suffers the most, so you need to carefully examine it.

The master unscrews the screws around the perimeter of the board and disconnects all cables from it. Then the hinged “plugs” are removed and a disassembled iPhone 6 appears before us, without a “motherboard” and a display.

After examining the inside of the phone, the forecast was optimistic - the elements did not have time to oxidize, since the water had been under the cover quite recently.

To find out why the iPhone 6 did not work, it was necessary to diagnose the motherboard, but first - clean it from the effects of drowning.

For this, a small Ya Xun YX200A ultrasonic bath is used.

The “motherboard” is immersed in a cleaning liquid and is under the influence of ultrasonic waves for some time.

After cleaning, the board is diagnosed using a microscope. The wizard identifies burnt items to determine what kind of iPhone 6 repair is required in this case.

In our case, the owner of the iPhone 6 was lucky - only one element necessary to turn on the smartphone was damaged, and it is also inexpensive. The master soldered the board, replaced the part, assembled the iPhone 6 and turned it on.

The repair of the recessed iPhone 6 was not only successfully completed, but also cost the owner very cheaply. There are several reasons for this - quick conversion, a good craftsman and maybe a little luck.

In any case, if your iPhone 6 gets wet, take it to a service center immediately, without waiting for it to “fix itself”. The less oxidation of parts, the cheaper the repair will cost you.

Only the latest generation of Apple smartphones received the long-awaited protection against water. And this is despite the fact that other companies have been producing dust and moisture resistant devices for the past few years. Well, okay, we are not here to scold Apple. We now have a much more serious task. This article will show you what to do if your iPhone falls into water or any other liquid.

What to do if iPhone falls into water

Of course, the first thing to do is to remove it from this liquid as soon as possible. But what should be done next? Let's talk about this in order.

Water is a neutral substance. It may not bring lightning-fast harm. Therefore, the faster you remove your device from it, the more likely it will continue to work as before. But if it gets inside - under the case: on the board and sensors, then over time, corrosion processes can begin and then you can’t do without an expensive repair of your apple gadget.

Advice: in case of short contact with water, it is important to turn off the device as soon as possible. If liquid gets on vital sensors, it can simply burn out. We certainly don't need this.

So, the iPhone is taken out of the water and turned off. What to do next? Let's figure it out:

Thus, if you do not want to play with fate, then it is better to run to the service center as soon as possible - only there they will be able to return you a full-fledged, working device.

Average repair cost(recovery after water ingress) - from 4000 thousand rubles and more, depending on the damage and the model of the smartphone, we will immediately inform you that the repair of the iPhone 6/7 will cost 3000 - 5000 thousand more than 5/5S.

Advice: in no case do not use a hair dryer and similar devices with descendants of hot air to dry the gadget. There is a high risk of overheating the iPhone or individual microcircuits. Then it will definitely not start, or the glue will flow, which holds the display and some microcircuits together.

Unfortunately, it is highly likely that an iPhone that has fallen into the water will no longer function as before. You'll be lucky if it just drains the battery faster. While other outcomes are possible. For example, incorrect display operation; loss of sound in the main and external speakers; broken Home button and much, much more.

The iPhone is an expensive device that needs to be treated with care. Unfortunately, situations are different, and one of the most unpleasant is when the smartphone fell into the water. However, if you act immediately, you will have a chance to protect it from damage after moisture enters.

Starting with the iPhone 7, popular Apple smartphones finally received special protection against moisture ingress. Moreover, the latest devices, such as the iPhone XS and XS Max, have a maximum IP68 standard. This type of protection means that the phone can safely survive immersion in water to a depth of 2 m for up to 30 minutes. The rest of the models are endowed with the IP67 standard, which guarantees protection against splashes and short-term immersion in water.

If you are the owner of the iPhone 6S or younger, it should be carefully protected from water. However, the deed has already been done - the device survived the dive. How to be in such a situation?

Stage 1: Switching off the phone

Immediately, as soon as the smartphone is taken out of the water, you should immediately turn it off to prevent a possible short circuit.

Stage 2: Removal of trapped moisture

After the phone has been in the water, you should get rid of the liquid that has fallen under the case. To do this, put the iPhone on the palm of your hand in a vertical position and, with small patting movements, try to shake out the remaining moisture.

Stage 3: Complete drying of the smartphone

Once most of the liquid has been removed, the phone should be completely dry. To do this, leave it in a dry and well-ventilated place. You can use a hair dryer to speed up drying (do not use hot air, however).

Some users, from their own experience, advise putting the phone overnight in a container with rice or cat litter - they have good absorbent properties, allowing you to dry your iPhone much better.

Step 4: Checking Moisture Indicators

All iPhone models are endowed with special indicators of moisture ingress - based on them, you can conclude how serious the immersion turned out to be. The location of this indicator depends on the smartphone model:

  • iPhone 2G- located in the headphone jack;
  • iPhone 3, 3GS, 4, 4S- in the connector for connecting the charger;
  • iPhone 5 and older- in the SIM card slot.

For example, if you own an iPhone 6, remove the SIM card tray from your phone and look at the connector: you can see a small indicator, which should normally be white or gray. If it is red, this indicates that moisture has entered the device.

Stage 5: Turn on the device

As soon as you wait for the smartphone to dry completely, try turning it on and checking its performance. Outwardly, the screen should not show streaks.

Next, turn on the music - if the sound is dull, you can try using special applications to clean the speakers using certain frequencies (one of these tools is Sonic).

  1. Launch the Sonic app. The current frequency will be displayed on the screen. To increase or decrease it, swipe up or down on the screen, respectively.
  2. Set the speaker volume to maximum and press the button Play. Experiment with different frequencies that will be able to "knock out" all the moisture from the phone as quickly as possible.

Step 6: Contacting a service center

Even if outwardly the iPhone works in the old way, moisture has already got into it, which means that it can slowly but surely kill the phone, covering the internal elements with corrosion. As a result of such an impact, it is almost impossible to predict "death" - for some, the gadget will stop turning on in a month, while for others it may work for another year.

Try not to put off going to the service center - competent specialists will help you disassemble the device, get rid of moisture residues that might not have dried, and also treat the “insides” with an anti-corrosion compound.

What Not to Do

  1. Do not dry iPhone near heat sources such as a battery;
  2. Do not insert foreign objects, cotton buds, pieces of paper, etc. into the phone's jacks;
  3. Do not charge a dry smartphone.

If it so happened that the iPhone could not be protected from water ingress - do not panic, immediately take steps to avoid its failure.

Judging by the devices customers bring to us, I can assume that they underestimate the harm that water can do to iPhones or iPads. I have noticed more than once that after the phone has sunk or moisture has got into it, people are in no hurry to go to the service center. Some, especially serene ones, bring in a damaged apparatus a few months after it has suffered from moisture. In this regard, I would like to highlight this problem in more detail and tell you how things really are with such damage.

Trying to repair a phone after it has been exposed to water is one of the most difficult types of repairs. Firstly, because it is necessary to carry out a large amount of work to identify the list of actual breakdowns caused by corrosion or a short circuit caused by the contact of the printed circuit board elements with water. Secondly, because the client's expectations are very different from the actual state of affairs, and the manager has to inform him about each action in order to agree on the next steps, or even the feasibility of a repair. The client thinks: just think, a couple of drops of water got in, it's okay. But in fact, the iPhone is full of water, in a few days the moisture managed to destroy the camera module, the dock connector cable, and rotted the battery charge circuits. And when you call and tell the client about what was discovered, then this picture does not fit into the ten seconds that the iPhone lay in a puddle of spilled tea on the table. These are ten seconds and they could not lead to anything bad. And the educational program begins on the phone, which explains the causes and consequences of this incident. And so with each client individually. Thirdly, a very time-consuming process of restoring circuitry. Because in most cases damage affects the power elements on the board itself and their replacement or restoration is painstaking work with a miniature soldering iron under a microscope.

What to hope for

That your device will turn on. That he will work for some time. It could be a month, or it could be a year. Nobody can tell you this for sure. It is also worth hoping that the phone received not very extensive damage from the water.

What not to expect and do

Don't expect your machine to work the same as before. It will not happen. Any iPhone or iPad after getting inside the body of water is like a cancer patient. He will not get better and he is slowly and gradually dying. Don't invest in this phone. If you were told the amount of repair is a third of the cost of a new device, this is a clear sign that a lot has suffered from water and that it will not last long when repaired. And yet, no service center will give you a guarantee for such repairs.

What will the service center do with your device

First, it will be taken apart. The main board will be dismantled and will be washed in an ultrasonic bath. For washing, a solution consisting of alcohol, an organic solvent and aqueous ammonia is used. It destroys substances of organic origin and cleans the elements of the board from oxidation products and organic substances. Washing lasts from five minutes to several hours, depending on the severity of the damage caused by corrosion. This procedure is required. The rest of the parts, such as the display, digitizer, cables, buttons, battery, connectors, will be dried with a stream of hot air in order to remove moisture. Then the conductive elements of the connectors and contacts will be treated with the same solution in which the main board was washed, or with a technical cleaner for electrical contacts. After the moisture is removed from the parts of the phone, they will collect it and try to start it. And then it all depends on what exactly suffered. If the part can be restored, then it is restored. For example, this applies to the elements of the main board and various kinds of loops. If the element is not recoverable, then it is replaced. Most often this applies to modules. For example, cameras, speakers, displays, touchscreens and microphones. Naturally, each position recommended for replacement is agreed with the client. As you know, an accident is easier to prevent than to deal with the consequences after. So in our case: it is easier to protect the iPhone or iPad from water. For example, if you are going to nature, you do not need to take your phone with you on the boat. It can roll over and you will be in the water along with your phone. Or for example, it is worth checking clothes before washing. Yesterday we had an iPhone 4S in our service center, which was washed in a typewriter for an hour and brought to us after two days from the moment it got wet. There was nothing left to restore. The display, the Wi-Fi module, Bluetooth, the on / off button cable (which also contains the proximity sensor and the Siri sensor) are out of order, and some of the connectors are rotten. In the photo below are photos of these destructions.

This is how the screen of a recessed phone will look like. Divorces appeared due to water damage to the display substrate. iPhone 4S display.

Rotten connectors on the main board. Such damage cannot be repaired. Payment from iPhone 4.

A rotten iPhone 4 camera module. A month has passed since the water damage and before the visit to the service center. The item is not working. Among other things, do not forget about the condensate. As a rule, it is inside the device as a result of a sharp temperature drop. For example, if in winter in severe frost you go outside with your iPad without a case, keep it there for half an hour and then return back to a warm apartment and immediately put it on charge. You should also remember the requirements for the operating environment and do not violate them. Because it is also fraught with a sad and unexpected outcome. For example, two weeks ago we received an iPad 2 that stopped seeing the SIM card. During acceptance, it turned out that he sees the modem (IMEI is displayed), however, he does not see the SIM card when you insert it into the slot. During the diagnostics, the reason for this behavior was discovered.

The centers of corrosion are visible on the right, at the root of the connector for the receiver's SIM cable. It can also be seen that corrosion (white coating) has begun to destroy the elements near the connector on the main board on the right side. iPad 2 board.

What we saw under the protective screen. iPad 2 board. The condensate got under the protective screen of the main board and because of it the tracks of the elements that were responsible for processing and transmitting signals from the SIM card to the modem rotted. Since the iPad 2 board itself has seven layers, it is simply impossible to restore rotten tracks. Because of this, the owner of the affected iPad instead of iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G now just has iPad 2 Wi-Fi.

What to do if water gets inside the iPhone or iPad

First of all, you need to turn off your phone. If this cannot be done in the usual way due to the fact that the device is stuck on a spinning wheel or an apple, hold down the on / off button and the Home button and hold until the display goes out. After that, take out the SIM card and put your device in a bag of dry rice or table salt. Moreover, if you put it in salt, wrap the phone with a handkerchief so that the salt does not come into contact with the phone itself. And after that, rush headlong in search of the nearest service center, because only there can really help your device. And remember, the sooner you do this, the more likely it is that your device will be saved and the less it will cost you.
