Language packs in the Microsoft Store. Improving Mobile Broadband

Microsoft is starting to cut back on adding new features to Windows 10's upcoming major update, codenamed Redstone 4 - by now, the public can already appreciate most of the significant upcoming changes thanks to the latest Insider Preview test builds. Developers as a whole have moved into the testing and debugging phase of this spring update. So let's take a look at the main innovations that will appear in Redstone 4.

Timeline

The biggest and most interesting change for users in Redstone 4 is the Timeline. This is Microsoft's Recent Apps screen, which will display all the user's activities on their devices over the past 30 days, making it easy to see where they left off in a particular compatible application. From there, you can view your browsing history, open documents, visited places in the Maps app, read articles in the News app, and more.

Timeline synchronizes information from all devices associated with a user account, so you can, for example, start working on a laptop on the road, and then continue it at home on a desktop system. The new screen can be accessed from the Task View area.

Changes within the conceptFluentdesign

A new version of Windows 10, the Spring Creators Update, is coming out soon. But for users who want to touch the latest versions of the system, Microsoft suggests using Skip Ahead so that you can download Windows 10 Redstone 5 right now.

Skip Ahead is one of the branches for receiving Insider Preview builds, which allows you to "jump" the next stage of development to later builds. At the moment, the current version is 1709 (Redstone 3), the next version will be Windows 10 1803 (Spring Creators Update or Redstone 4). Skip Ahead will allow you to upgrade to Redstone 5.

The Windows 10 Redstone 5 update does not have a specific release date, given the release of major updates every six months, RS5 should be expected in the fall. Taking into account the periodicity of the release of new versions of the system (1511 - 1607 - 1703 -1709 - 1803 - ???), it is likely that this version will receive the version number 1809.

Officially, RS5 ISO images have not been released, so downloading Windows 10 Redstone 5 will not work, we will update.

To get the Redstone 5 update, no matter what build or system version you have, the Insider Preview program makes it easy and simple to update:

  • First you need to enable Skip Ahead builds. Open Settings - Update & Security - Windows Insider Program.
  • If you are not a member of the Insider Preview program, it will require you to register (enter a Microsoft account) and restart your PC.
  • And then select "Skip ahead to the next Windows release" in the paragraph with the choice of the desired channel for receiving assemblies.

After these manipulations, an update to the RS5 version will be available in the update center.

Windows 10 Redstone 5: What's new?

At the moment, several builds of RS5 have been released, which we will discuss in order.

Windows 10 Redstone 5 Build 17604

Build 17604 was released at the same time as Build 17101 for the Spring Creators Update. The update does not bring new significant features.

  • Emoji changes. Some emoji icons have changed based on user feedback. Example:

  • In addition, the algorithm for hints for Emoji based on text queries has been improved. To bring up the Emoji panel, press Win + . (dot in English layout).

New features for the version for Workstations:

  • Maximum performance. Windows 10 Pro for Workstations (High-Performance Edition) will have an additional power plan called Ultimate Performance.

This power scheme will allow you to use the power of the device to the maximum (according to Microsoft). Focusing system resources on specific tasks, with the allocation of priority for it. This scheme will not be available for battery powered devices.

  • Preinstalled work apps. After installing the system, among the tiled applications, you can notice a large amount of garbage - games, unnecessary applications and ads. With the version for Workstations, Microsoft decided to focus users on work. That is why the pre-installed applications are focused on work and productivity.

Windows 10 Build 17618 Redstone 5 Insider Preview

Build 17618 is much more interesting than the last one, as it returns the Sets function, but available to all users.

Sets - in the standard sense, these are ordinary browser tabs transferred to the Windows interface. This functionality allows you to open many applications in one window, but in different tabs. Not all programs can be opened in Sets mode, but the list of compatible applications will expand in the future.

Keyboard Shortcuts:

  • Ctrl + Win + Tab – next tab;
  • Ctrl + Win + Shift + Tab - previous tab;
  • Ctrl + Win + T - new tab;
  • Ctrl + Win + W - close the tab.

To enable this feature, you need to go to the settings Settings - System - Multitasking and turn on the display of tabs.

Remark . Not all users get this feature. Even after installing new builds and reinstalling RS5, the feature may not appear. It is advisable to leave feedback in the Feedback Hub application, for further correction.

Windows 10 Build 17623 Redstone 5

  • HEIF format support. High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF) is a new modern image format and series of images. Apple introduced support for the HEIF format in 2017, but with a different name - HEIC.

The new format allows you to store a large amount of information about the image without the heavy cost of memory. The images themselves, a sequence of images (or a series of images) and additional data (metadata, alpha channel, depth, derivatives, and others).

  • Safe removal of the graphics card. In 2017, GPU boxes became very popular - devices for externally connecting video cards. The connection is made via Thunderbolt 3 connector. Using safe removal, you can be sure that you will not lose data due to an application crash when you remove the video card.

To safely remove an external video card, open the tray and, as in the case of a regular flash drive, click on the eject device icon and select the video card.

  • New privacy settings. During the OOBE (Initial System Settings) phase, advanced privacy settings will be available. Added settings Find my device and Improved manual input.

Windows 10 Redstone 5 Build 17639

Changes in Build 17639 are focused more on Sets and also slightly on Bluetooth devices.

  • Sets improvement.
  • Move tabs between windows and within windows using Drag and Drop.
  • Switching tabs using Alt+Tab keyboard shortcut.
  • Additional settings for Sets in System Options.

  • Integration of Sets with Explorer.

  • New context menu actions for Sets tabs.

  • Fast tab recovery. We plan to add Microsoft Office applications to Sets soon. To be the first to try new features, you must be an Office Insider and have the latest build of Office.

  • Displays the charge of Bluetooth devices.

  • Now in the settings of Windows 10 devices, you can see the percentage of charge of a Bluetooth device that supports this functionality.

Have a great day!

Experienced Windows users know: "You can't install a new system until the first service pack is released." Despite the fact that Microsoft has long abandoned the official strategy of releasing service packs, after the fall 2015 update comes a major anniversary update, also called Redstone 1, but designed exclusively for Windows 10.

The official name is quite unremarkable: "Windows 10 Version 1607", which indicates the release date - July 2016. Distribution, however, started only on August 2. The free Anniversary Update is available for all PCs with Windows 10 installed, even though Microsoft has increased its hardware requirements. Even the 32-bit version will now require at least 2 GB of RAM: however, these recommendations are mandatory only for equipment manufacturers.

New features come to the fore

While the Windows 10 Anniversary Update isn't a classic service pack, the focus is on new features. Of course, bugs have been fixed and minor adjustments have been made. So, the clock on the "Taskbar" can also be seen when working on multiple monitors, for universal applications under Windows, the "Dark Mode" mode is available in the parameters, and the file path in the NTFS volume can exceed 260 characters.

Fans of a beautiful interface will get new icons, for example, for all lines in the "Parameters" - the background image is distributed both on the lock screen and on the login screen. A new panel will appear in the left corner of the Start menu with buttons for settings, on/off, and account. But along with this "small things" we are offered real innovations.

Cortana ubiquitous

The voice assistant Cortana has been improved - if necessary, she can change the language and help even from the lock screen. This way, users don't have to sign in to use Cortana's services. Record notes, start music or save a reminder - the assistant performs all functions when the screen is locked. Of course, this is convenient and well implemented, but this way the company is more likely to scare off consumers who are worried about their safety.

The purpose of the locked Desktop is to keep the curious from accessing it, who, in turn, using Cortana, can try to extract personal information from Windows 10 - while accessing email, calendar and projects is explicitly allowed from the lock screen. Important: Cortana on the lock screen is running by default. To stop this, the function should be purposefully disabled or the voice assistant services should be completely abandoned.

The first option, however, is rather convoluted, as Microsoft has removed the on/off option from Cortana's settings.

But, thanks to Redstone, now it’s still easier to do it: before, to optimize the assistant, you had to first click on the notepad icon, now it’s enough to go to the settings through the hamburger menu.

Notifications on Windows Phone can only be sent to English-speaking users: the corresponding application for Android and iOS is currently only available in English.

Redstone also improves pen input for managing Windows 10; this will primarily benefit users of the Surface line of devices. At the same time, for users of the stylus, the work area for input is made in the form of the Start menu, from which centralized access to notes and sketches on the screen is provided. Redstone in this menu displays the applications most suitable for pen input.

Window Redstone adds Linux

Yes, your eyes didn't deceive you: the Redstone update for Windows 10 offers an embedded Linux subsystem for the first time in history. Users can now work with the famous BASH command line and under Windows 10 to take advantage of many commands from Linux such as grep, ps, find, curl, wget and apt-get. The target group for this feature is developers and administrators of heterogeneous networks.

To work with BASH, however, you first need to enter developer mode, and then additionally install the Windows Subsystem for Linux component. On the technical side, there is no kernel emulation under Windows 10; calls to the Linux system in the subsystem through a shell, the so-called wrapper, are translated into the corresponding Windows functions.

Updates for Edge and Defender

The Defender antivirus bundled with Windows 10 received version number 4.10 in Redstone 1 and now allows you to perform offline system scans. To do this, the computer restarts. In principle, security has been strengthened in this update.

For example, biometric authorization through Windows Hello has extended to compatible apps and websites in Microsoft Edge. The default browser itself has finally begun to cope with extensions, even if their number (a little more than ten are still available) looks negligible compared to add-ons for Firefox and Chrome.

Arguments for Windows 10 Users

New features, bug fixes, improved security, and all this as a free update is a compelling reason for Windows 10 users to install the Anniversary Update.

Satisfied consumers of Win7 and 8.1, who oppose the transition to the "top ten" for privacy reasons, did not have any new reasons to upgrade.

Installing Windows 10 Redstone

In the case of major Windows updates, things often go awry as server load increases and Microsoft distributes updates in waves. At first, many users will receive Redstone 1 not even through Windows Update. We will show you how to optimally prepare for this process and survive it without unnecessary nervous costs.

> Run Windows Update

You can get the Anniversary Update this way only if you have all the pre-release updates installed. Therefore, first bring the "ten" to the current form and run all the detected patches.

> free up space

The Redstone update requires at least 5 GB of free space. A good opportunity to clean up the system a bit. Uninstall unnecessary programs, run the Disk Cleanup utility and erase digital junk.

> Create a backup

Before updating, you need to make a backup copy of the entire system. To do this, use the native Windows tools or the program Ashampoo Backup 2016(website).

>Bypass Update Center

The easiest way to get Redstone 1 is through Windows Update. If the server is not responding, there is a faster alternative - Microsoft is also updating the Media Creation Tool. To do this, download the entire image file from Win 10 and Redstone to a DVD or USB drive and use it to update your PC.

The next major Windows 10 update is codenamed Redstone 4 and has version ID 1803, which means the update is expected in March.
Microsoft has not officially announced the name of the new version of Windows 10, but according to internal information from Bug Bash, it may be called the Spring Creators Update.
In this article, we've rounded up all the new system features that were introduced in the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview builds, specifically Build 17083 on January 24, 2018.

Timeline - a list of activities on your devices

The Timeline feature was originally expected in the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update but has been delayed.

Timeline expands the capabilities of Task View by adding a history of the activities you have previously performed on your computer. Click the "Task View" button on the taskbar or use the Windows key + Tab combination to see the activities you performed "Earlier today" or in previous days. Timeline can show sites you've opened in Microsoft Edge, articles you've read in the News app, documents you've worked on in Microsoft Word, and places you've viewed in Maps.

The main purpose of this function is to resume activities that were abruptly interrupted or deliberately postponed.

Timeline supports synchronization between devices. Thus, you can continue any activity on another PC where your account is used. Personal voice assistant Cortana will offer a list of activities to resume when you switch to another device.

The user can use the scrollbar or search bar to navigate through activities. All activities are sorted by day, and daily activities are sorted by hours. You can use the context menu to clear activities for a specific hour. You can set up Timeline in the app Settings > Privacy > Activity Log.

Microsoft plans to integrate this feature into mobile apps so that users can switch between tasks even on different types of devices. However, app developers will need to first implement support for this feature in order for it to work with computers and mobile apps.

New features for developers and system administrators

  • Curl and Tar commands. The Curl and Tar utilities for downloading files and extracting .tar archives, which are commonly used on Linux, are now built into Windows and are available under the following paths: C:\Windows\System32\curl.exe and C:\Windows\System32\tar.exe.
  • Native UNIX sockets. Windows 10 now natively supports UNIX sockets with the new afunix.sys kernel driver. This improvement will make it easier to port applications from Linux or other UNIX systems to WIndows.
  • Support for serial devices for Linux applications. Linux applications running on the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) can now access serial devices (COM ports).
  • Background tasks for Linux applications. Linux applications running on the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) can now run in the background. This means that applications like sshd, tmux and screen will now work correctly.
  • Permissions improvements for Linux applications. Users can now run both elevated (administrator) and normal (standard user) applications in the same WSL session.
  • Support for scheduled tasks for Linux applications. You can now run a Linux application in WSL from scheduled tasks.
  • Support for remote connections for Linux applications. Users can run WSL while connected using OpenSSH, VPN, PowerShell, or other remote access tool.
  • Quick conversion of Linux paths to Windows. Team Wslpath allows you to quickly convert paths Linux on Windows.
  • Registry process. AT Task Manager you will see a new process named "Registry". This is a minimal process designed to store registry data for the Windows kernel. Since the data was previously stored in the kernel anyway, the total system memory usage remains unchanged. Microsoft says this will allow them to optimize the amount of memory used by the registry in the future.

  • Windows Defender Application Guard. The Windows Defender Application Guard feature for protecting Microsoft Edge, which was introduced in the Fall Creators Update, was originally intended for users of Windows 10 Enterprise. One is now available to Windows 10 Pro users, but disabled by default.
  • New delivery optimization policies. New policies allow you to control the Delivery Optimization feature used for app updates in Windows Update and the Microsoft Store. For example, administrators can limit bandwidth based on the time of day. These policies are available under Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Delivery Optimization in the Group Policy Editor.

Microsoft decided to delay the release of the Sets feature in Windows 10 - it is excluded from the test builds of Redstone 4.

Sets introduces a new and unique tabbed experience that allows users to combine different apps and sites in one window. For example, a user can open a Word document, a Google search engine, and a OneNote note in the same window, and easily switch between each application or site.
The idea is to allow users to conveniently group content from the web with application content.
The Sets feature should return to Redstone 5 Insider Builds once the final release of Redstone 4 is released. Microsoft is still experimenting with this feature and figuring out how it will work.

    Based on materials Comss.ru

Good luck and all the best!

Alright folks, the development of Redstone 5, the next major update for the Windows 10 operating system, has begun. The first build of Redstone 5 was build number 17604, and those who were in Skip Ahed were able to get this coveted build. But here's the dilemma. If you're testing Redstone 4 but want to jump into testing Redstone 5 using the Skip Ahead to the next Windows release feature, you won't be able to. You will be constantly redirected to the Redstone 4 testing branch, and when you reboot, they will write that Skip Ahead is closed, and this is the main condition for receiving new builds. Microsoft specifically gave only a limited number of insiders access to Redstone 5 so that the rest of the insiders would be testing Redstone 4, since the release is coming soon.

But if you do not want to test pre-release builds of Redstone 4, but want to start testing Redstone 5 already, then there is a small instruction on how to do this. In principle, I made a similar video last year, which concerned updating to Redstone 4, but due to the circumstances, I had to resort to this method in the case of Redstone 5 as well. The fact is that I reinstalled the system again, formatted everything, started life from scratch, so to speak, and I was already in Skip Ahead, but the insider program apparently does not remember this, so all I managed to do was download this build 17110. By the way, if you want to become an insider, then you can do it, after downloading only the insider build, which I did, I simply cannot switch from the RTM build to the insider build. But anyway, I was able to update to Early Access build 17110, but not to Redstone 5 build 17604. As I said, the insider program does not remember the testing branch and since the problem is in my PC and in the system registry, not in the account Microsoft, then we will edit the registry.

  1. So, there is nothing difficult here. So, in the search we prescribe regedit and press Enter.
  2. Next, you need to go to the section HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost\UI\Selection.
  3. In this section we find the parameter UIContentType, and by double-clicking change its value to Skip, and the parameter UIRing change the value to WIF although my default was WIF. That's not all.

  1. Next, we go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost\Applicability.
  2. Parameter value ContentType also change to Skip, and the parameter value ring change again to WIF. That's all.

Next, we restart the PC and after the next update check, we can observe that the build of Windows 10 Redstone 5 Build 17604 is available to us - this is the first public build of Redstone 5. Download and update. By the way, I noticed that build 17604 has an old version of 1709, and build 17110 has a new version of 1803, i.e. Microsoft plans to sign the assembly this month and it turns out that Spring Creators Update (Redstone 4) will indeed be released in April, unless of course Microsoft pushes the deadlines, because the company is working to speed up updates.

Here was a short guide about upgrading to Redstone 5. For the laziest, in the description there is a link to download the registry file to automatically replace the values with the ones you need, after which you can also get an upgrade to Redstone 5.
