Windows 10 version 1703 what's new. How to fix errors that cause a rollback to a previous version

Surely you have already heard that Windows 10 Creators Update is officially released today. In this article, we decided to be one step ahead and tell you about the new features for sysadmins in the next Windows 10 update (1703).

Configuration

Windows Configuration Designer

Previously, this component was called Windows Imaging and Configuration Designer, ICD and was used to create provisioning packages. This version has a new name. Windows Configuration Designer. On previous versions of Windows, it can be installed as part of the Windows ADK Assessment and Deployment Kit.

To make it easier to create provisioning packages in the Windows Configuration Designer in Windows 10 version 1703, there are a number of new wizards.

Both desktop and kiosk versions of the wizard have the option to uninstall pre-installed software using the CleanPC Configuration Service Provider.

Bulk connect to Azure Active Directory

New wizards in Windows Configuration Designer allow you to create provisioning packages for joining devices to Azure Active Directory. Bulk connect to Azure Active Directory is available in desktop, mobile, kiosk, and Surface Hub wizards.

Windows Spotlight

New group policies and mobile device management (MDM) settings have been added:

Structure of the Start Menu, Start Screen, and Taskbar

You probably know that businesses can change the look of the Start menu, Start screen, and taskbar on PCs running Windows 10 Enterprise and Education editions. In version 1703, these modifications can also be applied to the Pro edition.

Previously, the custom taskbar could only be deployed using group policies or provisioning packages. In the new version, support for custom panels has been added to the mobile device management (MDM) tool.

With the new Creators Update ("for designers"), Microsoft is now offering the fourth free update within the . As the name suggests, the Redmond-based company is targeting creative users. But in addition to the updated Paint application, which has acquired a 3D version, Microsoft offers other improvements and optimizations. In the article we will just talk about them.

Features not included in the update

But first, I would like to talk about the features that, despite the fact, are still not included in the Creators Update. For example, placeholders or "smart" files should have returned to the OneDrive cloud service. Until now, under Windows 10, only the entire OneDrive library can be synchronized with the selected device. And experienced users no longer have the opportunity to rid the system of unnecessary files from the cloud. Under Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 some files could be represented as "smart" files or placeholders. They showed up on the system, but the content was in the OneDrive cloud. The file was downloaded only directly when accessing it. Thus, it was possible to save space on the system. And when the file was required, it was simply downloaded to the system. This feature will now appear in the next major update. Probably, Microsoft had problems with its implementation.

Also on the list of tasks was the "My People" hub, the function was met with enthusiasm at the presentation, but later it was decided to remove it. Through this hub, you can quickly access the contacts you need to send a message or letter, or make a call via Skype. To communicate with contacts, you can use a variety of types of communication, including those from third-party developers. This feature will also be implemented later, with the Windows 10 Redstone 3 update.

What's more, smartphone users won't yet get the ambitious 3D Scanner app, which allows you to import any object in 3D through your smartphone's camera so that it can then be used in apps like the new Paint 3D.

Updated settings, game menu

Windows Creators Update

Among the new features is the ability to change the white balance on a schedule. For example, you can set the color to warm at night, which is less irritating to the eyes and better suited for work/play before bed. In principle, the same functionality can be obtained using the f.lux application available for Windows and Mac OS X. On the Apple iPhone, this function is known as Night Shift.

There's a new Xbox menu that partially replaces the Xbox app. It allows you to set a key combination to display the game menu, set up broadcasting to the proprietary Microsoft Beam.io service, or simply enable game recording in the background. While previously requiring a Microsoft account sign-in through the Xbox app, the settings now work without an account connected.

Moreover, now you can get to the list of applications directly from the "Settings" menu, you do not need to go to the additional "Apps & features" menu through the "System" item, which goes back to the pre-Windows 10 era. And here you can even delete -UWP apps that weren't possible before.

However, the old control panel is still accessible, although not as obvious as before. The easiest way is to type "Control Panel" in the Windows 10 search, after which you will have access to the old panel that has existed since early versions of Window. However, it does not include all the new features. Fortunately, important and deep settings options remain, such as networks.

Control

What's New in MDM

Windows 10 version 1703 introduces many new Configuration Service Providers (CSPs) that provide new options for managing Windows 10 devices using MDM or provisioning packages. Among other things, these CSPs allow you to configure several hundred optimal Group Policy settings through MDM. See CSP Policies - ADMX Enabled Policies.

Some more new CSPs are listed below:

  • Mobile app management support for Windows 10

Mobile Application Management (MAM) for Windows is a lightweight solution for managing access to organizational data and security on personal devices. MAM support is built into Windows on top of Windows Information Protection (WIP) starting with Windows 10 version 1703.

For more information, see Server-Side Implementations of Mobile Application Management Support in Windows.

    MDM Diagnostics

Windows 10 version 1703 further improves diagnostics for managing modern mobile devices. With automatic logging for mobile devices, Windows automatically collects logs when MDM encounters errors, so you no longer need to constantly log on devices with limited memory resources. In addition, the Microsoft Message Analyzer tool has been added, which allows support professionals to quickly identify the causes of problems without spending additional time and money.

    Application Virtualization (App-V) for Windows

In previous versions of the Microsoft Application Virtualization Sequencer (App-V Sequencer), you had to manually create virtualization environments. Windows 10 version 1703 introduces two new PowerShell cmdlets, New-AppVSequencerVM and Connect-AppvSequencerVM, that allow you to automatically create a virtualization environment, including virtual machine provisioning. In addition, with the new App-V Sequencer, you can virtualize and update multiple applications at once by automatically storing settings in an App-V project template (APPVT). You can also automatically remove unpublished packages using PowerShell scripts or Group Policy settings that take effect after the device is restarted.

      • Configuring Proxy Server Properties for an Ethernet Port

Using Miracast on an Existing Wireless or LAN

In Windows 10 version 1703, Microsoft added the ability to send a Miracast stream over a local network instead of a direct wireless connection. This feature is based on the Miracast over Infrastructure (MS-MICE) Connectivity Protocol.

Miracast over infrastructure provides a number of benefits:

    • Windows automatically detects the possibility of sending a video stream along this path.
    • Windows chooses this route only if the connection is over Ethernet or a secure Wi-Fi network.
    • Users don't need to change how they connect to the Miracast receiver. Uses the same user experience as a standard Miracast connection.
    • You do not need to make any changes to your computer's current hardware or wireless adapter drivers.
    • The solution works well for older wireless equipment not optimized for Miracast over Wi-Fi Direct.
    • The existing connection is used, which reduces the time required for connection, and ensures the stability of the stream.

    Principle of operation

The user attempts to connect to the Miracast receiver as before. After populating the list of Miracast receivers, Windows 10 determines that the receiver supports infrastructure connectivity. When a user selects a Miracast receiver, Windows 10 tries to resolve the hostname of the device through standard DNS as well as multicast DNS (mDNS). If the name is not resolved through one of the DNS methods, Windows 10 falls back to establishing a Miracast session using a standard Wi-Fi Direct connection.

    Enable Miracast by Infrastructure

If you have a device that has been updated to Windows 10 version 1703, this feature is already available to you. To take advantage of it in your environment, you must ensure that the following is true in your deployment:

    • The device (computer, phone, or Surface Hub) is running Windows 10 version 1703.
    • A Windows PC or Surface Hub can act as a receiver Miracast on infrastructure. A Windows computer or phone can act as source Miracast on infrastructure.
      • As a Miracast receiver, your computer or Surface Hub must be connected to your corporate network via Ethernet or a secure Wi-Fi network (for example, using WPA2-Enterprise or WPA2-PSK). If Surface Hub is connected to an open Wi-Fi network, Miracast over Infrastructure is automatically disabled.
      • As a Miracast source, the computer or phone must be connected to the same enterprise network via Ethernet or a secure Wi-Fi network.
    • The DNS hostname (device name) of the device must be resolvable by your DNS servers. This can be achieved either by allowing your device to automatically register itself through dynamic DNS, or by manually creating an A or AAAA record for the device's hostname.
    • Windows 10 PCs must be connected to the same enterprise network via Ethernet or a secure Wi-Fi network.

Please note that Miracast by Infrastructure is not a replacement for standard Miracast. This is an additional functionality that provides an advantage to users connected to the corporate network. Users who are guests at a specific location and do not have access to the corporate network will still connect using the Wi-Fi Direct connection method.
