Windows 10 is not updating to a new build. How to update the revision of the system

In this article, I will show you how to upgrade Windows 10 to a new version of the operating system in different ways. There are several ways to update your Windows 10 system.

At approximately twice a year intervals, Microsoft releases so-called “major” updates for the operating system. Essentially, we are talking about installing a new version of Windows 10 over the old system, while preserving user data, installed programs and system settings.

New versions of Windows 10 add functions that were not previously in the operating system, make changes to the interface, improve system performance that is not visible to the user. Thanks to the Windows 10 Insider Preview (Windows 10 Insider Program), Microsoft has enough information about the work of certain innovations, which can be widely tested before the final version is released.

There are several ways to upgrade to the latest version of Windows 10:

  • Updating through Windows Update.
  • Using the official update tool, the Media Creation Tool.
  • Update using the Windows 10 Update Assistant utility.
  • A fresh install of Windows 10 over an older version of Windows 10.
  • Clean install of the new version of Windows 10.

Next, we will consider all the possible options for updating Windows. Different methods are required in order to update to a new version, in the case when the Windows 10 update does not start with one of the methods, or the system update process fails. In this case, you can try another way to update Windows.

For some users, this is not relevant, since they disable the update in Windows 10. You can read more about this.

Updating Windows 10 with Windows Update

Windows 10 is automatically updated through Windows Update. There are two ways to download updates:

  • The system update is downloaded to the computer without user intervention. When everything is ready, Windows will prompt the user to install the update.
  • The user independently launches the process of updating the operating system.

In the first case, the update will not be downloaded to the computer immediately after the final release. At this moment, Microsoft servers are heavily loaded, so the OS is delivered to computers in turn. The update files will appear on the PC after a while. After receiving a message from Windows 10 and your consent to the update, the system will update automatically.

In the second case, the user can start the update process on his own. To do this, go to the Start menu and then follow these steps:

  1. Click on "Options", in the "Options" window select "Update and Security".
  2. In the "Windows Update" section, in the "Update Status" option, click on the "Check for Updates" button.
  3. After completing the check for updates, a message will appear stating that a new version of Windows is available.
  1. Then the process of downloading and preparing to install the updates will begin.
  2. Next, Windows will offer to restart the computer now or at a specific time to start the installation of the update to the new version of the system.
  3. After that, the process of working with updates will begin, during which the computer will restart several times.
  4. Wait until the installation is complete, after which a new version of the Windows operating system will be loaded on the computer

Sometimes, it happens that the update process stretches for a very long period of time, because of this, the user is forced to interrupt the system update process. Sometimes, updating the operating system ends in failure, which Windows informs the user about. In both cases, there is an automatic rollback to the version of Windows 10 from which the system was updated.

Updating Windows 10 with Media Creation Tool

With the help of the free Media Creation Tool, the user can independently launch the update of the operating system to the final version, or download a fresh image of Windows 10 to his computer to create a bootable USB flash drive.

There are three options when using the Media Creation Tool:

  • Run the system update using the Media Creation Tool.
  • Create a bootable USB flash drive with Windows 10 using the Media Creation Tool, and then update the OS using a bootable USB flash drive.
  • Save Windows 10 to ISO image in order to then burn it to a DVD disc or create a bootable USB flash drive in another program.

For writing to a USB flash drive or when saving an ISO image, the Media Creation Tool application downloads combined or separate Windows images with a bit of 64 bit and 32 bit (to choose from) containing several editions of Windows 10 (Windows 10 Pro, Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Home Single Language, Windows 10 Education).

To get the utility, go to the official Mayerosoft website: https://www.microsoft.com/ru-ru/software-download/windows10, and then click the Download Tool Now button.

Updating with Windows 10 Update Assistant

A special utility, Windows 10 Update Assistant, is designed to update the operating system. The program downloads and installs the latest OS version on your computer.

Go to the software download site (link above in the article), click on the "Update Now" button. The Windows 10 Update Assistant app will be downloaded to your computer.

To start the upgrade process to the most recent version of Windows 10, run the Windows 10 Update Assistant. The application will download and install the operating system update on your computer.

For detailed instructions with pictures, see.

Installing a new version of Windows 10 by updating the system

The next option: a new Windows 10 update is installed over the old version of Windows 10. This method resembles reinstalling Windows by updating the system, and in fact, it is one of the options for reinstalling the system.

There are two ways to update:

  • By booting from a DVD with a system image, or by booting using a bootable Windows USB flash drive.
  • Mount the Windows 10 image in a virtual drive and then start the Windows installation.

From a bootable Windows flash drive or DVD, it boots onto your computer and then installs a new version of Windows 10.

The system installation process is standard, but there is one caveat:

  • In the window for choosing the type of installation, you must select "Update: installing Windows while saving files, settings and applications."

In the second method, the ISO image of Windows 10 located on the computer must be connected to the virtual disk drive.

Installing a new version of Windows 10 without saving data from the previous version

Another option for updating your system is to do a clean install of Windows 10 on your computer. The old version of the operating system will be removed, and a new version of Windows will be installed on the PC, without saving data from the previous version of the system.

This method will allow the user to start using the new version of the system from scratch. In fact, this is a reinstallation of Windows 10, only the version of the previous system is replaced with a new version.

When installing Windows 10, please note that you will need to activate the system:

  • If Windows was previously updated on this computer, then the system will be activated automatically using a digital license.
  • If your computer has not yet installed operating system updates to Windows 10, or to a newer version of Windows, I recommend logging into an account to link the license to the account. Immediately after the update, log in to your account in order to activate the operating system without any problems. After that, the user can go to the local account.

The whole process of installing Windows 10 on a computer with pictures is described in detail in this one.

Conclusions of the article

The user can upgrade to a new version of Windows 10 in several ways: using automatic updating, Windows update tool, by installing a new version of the system over the old one, with a clean installation of a new version of the operating system instead of the previous version.

Windows 10- a relatively new operating system, so users often face some problems in its work. It may be incompatibility with some application, lack of drivers, misunderstanding how to work with, inability to synchronize, not knowing how to update the system to a new version, and more.

The update center is available for both corporate and home systems. Let's consider all the ways to upgrade the OS to * dozens *.

  • Update via Windows Update: "Options - Update & Security - Windows Update - Check for Updates". Usually, if an update is available and available, it is downloaded and installed without user assistance - automatically.

To complete the process, just restart your PC.

  • Installing an update using the Update Assistant. This is a special utility that is always available and no matter what device you have, the update will be available immediately. To do this, on the official page of the Assistant, click "Download update".
  • Media Creation Tool. It is available on the official website via the "Download Tool Now - Update this PC Now" button. Then everything is installed automatically.

There will be several reboots in the process.

  • ISO image. It is used to update the * edition * of the system or install it from scratch. Available for download through the program downloaded from the official site - Media Creation Tool.
  • Through the Refresh Windows program, an update will be performed, which will erase all data in the PC before installation.

How do I update Windows 10 to the latest version?

When a new update appears for your device, usually the system sends a notification where you need to respond whether you want to install the update now or later. And if the default update is installed at the next shutdown or restart, a notification will appear on the screen.

But you can not wait for this, but intervene in the process and update yourself: "Settings - Update and Security - Update now". If there are no updates in the Center, go to the Microsoft website and search there, via the "Details" link. More advanced users download applications to removable media, for example, on a USB flash drive and boot a clean system, but if you are not sure of the result, it is better to just make the system - updated.

If after all OS processes * are updated * you do not like this assembly, you can always return to the previous version within 10 days.

What's new in updated Windows 10?

Thanks to the new functions and capabilities of the system, your work will be done faster and more efficiently.

Built-in MICROSOFT EDGE browser has been improved. Now available for him:

WINDOWS Defender now works with another installed antivirus.

Small but pleasant improvements include new emojis, window design, Connect app, Xbox Play Anywhere features and others. Thanks to the new functionality, it will be easier and more pleasant for the user to use the OS.

Probable difficulties when installing the system
In general, no problems were found as such, however, it may be difficult to update the system from other versions of the product. In this case, it is recommended to make a backup copy of important files, disconnect devices and suspend the antivirus software.

The promotion to upgrade Windows 7, and 8.1 to Windows 10 for all users ended at the end of summer 2016. Despite the fact that the term of the free transition promotion has expired a long time ago, many other methods have worked for a long time - from changing the time in the system to activating Windows 10 with existing keys of previous versions of the seventh or eighth generations.

But due to the fact that in January 2018, Microsoft representatives announced the official closure of any update options, it seems that it is no longer possible to get a free licensed Windows 10. But as practice shows, many options from those that worked earlier are still active. Let's take a look at the most convenient and effective ones.

At the moment, there are three free upgrade methods working: using the Windows Upgrade Assistant utility, activating the system with a key from previous versions, and a clean installation of Windows 10 (relevant for users who have already made the transition, but for some reason returned to the previous version).

Possible upgrade options:

Before considering the current update options, you need to consider the following points:

  1. The Windows 10 migration process cannot be completed from Windows Vista or XP.
  2. The system from which the transition is made must have the latest updates installed.
  3. The current system must be activated or an official key purchased.
  4. The hardware of the computer must be supported by Windows 10.

Upgrade via Upgrade Assistant

Long after the free upgrade for all users ended, Microsoft provided a free upgrade to the new version of Windows 10 for people with disabilities. At first, the period of this promotion was extended until December 31, 2017, but after the expiration of this period, the opportunity to update was active until January 18, 2018.

The company even created a separate one in order to make the upgrade as comfortable as possible. One of the features of this promotion was that the user, in order to confirm his incapacity, did not need to undergo any special checks or confirmations. Anyone who went to the site and downloaded the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant utility could upgrade.

At this time, the end of the promotion is announced on the home page of the Microsoft Disabled Upgrade Site. The company points out that now the only option is to purchase the original version already preinstalled on the new device, or to buy a separate full version of the software. No download links for this utility are provided.

BUT the file with the bootloader (Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant) is still available on the Microsoft website, download while there is access.
If the file disappears from the downloads, write in the comments, we will try to put it simply on the site (if at that time, in general, this update option will still work).

During the first installation, the program will check the current version of the update assistant.

After that, you will need to read and agree to the terms of the license agreement.

The Setup Assistant will check if your computer can upgrade to Windows 10.

And, if all items have passed a positive check, after pressing the OK button, the update process to Windows 10 will start. After the update is completed, the key of the previous version is picked up, and at the exit the user can use the activated system.

If the utility gives an error at the first start, this may be due to what was said earlier - Microsoft has officially closed the possibility of this update. But to get around this limitation, it is enough to change the system time to any one that will be earlier than 12/31/2017.

To do this, click on the clock on the taskbar and go to change the date and time settings.

Then you need to go to the section to change the date and time.

And then choose any date that will be earlier than the agreed date of 12/31/2017.

After this procedure, you can try to run the update assistant program again, it should start smoothly and update the system.

Updating using a key from previous versions

This method is the simplest and fastest. To get started, you already need to be the owner of a 7th or 8th generation Windows key. To upgrade to Windows 10 you need:

The system must accept the key from the previous version and activate it.

Clean install of Windows 10.

It is necessary to make a reservation once again that this method is suitable for users who have already upgraded to Windows 10. It consists in simply performing a clean installation of Windows 10, and the activation key should be automatically picked up by the system.

The activation key should be accepted automatically due to the fact that the user became the holder of a digital license during the first upgrade to Windows 10. This means that the activation key is tied to the hash of the equipment that is installed on the user's system. Then, after logging into a Microsoft account, the activation data is saved on the company's servers, and the digital license is automatically assigned to both the user account and the system equipment.

Here it is necessary to take into account the fact that if for some reason the configuration of the computer was previously changed, then it will be problematic to restore the license and only through technical support from Microsoft.

How to upgrade to Windows 10 for free now updated: March 31, 2018 by: Denis

Despite the fact that Windows 10 has been on the market for quite some time, it is still considered a "young" operating system. The developers are working on its improvements every day to make the user experience more comfortable. All the changes made, no matter how useful they are, are carefully packaged and come to the computer in the form of constant updates, so it is so important to know what they are and how to install them correctly.

Do I need to update Windows 10

The question of the need for Windows updates has always been acute, and for good reason. There is still no consensus, so all the pros and cons must be considered before deciding whether to upgrade the system.

Why you don't need to update Windows 10

The meaningfulness of updates for the line of Windows operating systems has always been questionable.

If we talk about Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 operating systems, then almost all updates did not bring anything new or made changes to functions that were unclaimed for ordinary users. With the release of Windows 10, this tradition has been partially preserved. Most updates to this OS add only new corporate, server and other narrowly focused functions, as well as fix old and add new small bugs.

Windows 10 updates take a long time to install and require a computer restart. This would be okay if they came out less often than once every two weeks. For the most part, Microsoft's corporate policy is to blame for this frequency, thanks to which everything new is immediately packed and sent to work without thorough checking and testing.

Windows 10 updates take a long time to install at the most inopportune moment

Windows 10 doesn't ask users if they need an update or not, and installs everything automatically when the system restarts. This can take the user by surprise when they decide to quickly restart their computer. Some Windows 10 updates can take up to two hours to install, depending on device specifications. In addition, downloading them can eat up all Internet traffic, and sometimes computer resources.

Also in Windows 10 there is such a thing as ads. And on free versions of the system, it is often accompanied by the forced installation of unpopular and low-quality software from Microsoft. Updates to services responsible for advertising are also included in the general Windows update.

Why you need to update Windows 10

It is imperative to install the first update immediately after installing the system. The fact is that there are many more varieties of Windows 10 than it might seem at first glance.

First, a generic non-personalized version of the system is installed. After installing the drivers and the first update, the OS changes to the version that most closely matches the hardware configuration, which can improve the overall performance of Windows 10 and its compatibility with your computer.

Now let's talk about the advantages of regularly updating Windows 10. You've probably heard about the spyware features of this system. In many ways, these services work with a single purpose: collecting and sending statistics to the technical support center. This allows developers to monitor the performance of Windows 10 on different computers and in different conditions in order to regularly improve the system through the release of updates. It is through the active collection of information that some Windows 10 updates are truly valuable and make the user experience more comfortable.

Separately, it should be said about the security system update. Every second Windows 10 update brings improved system protection against viruses and other external threats.

Taking into account the high activity of ransomware and cyber attacks, the update of security systems is relevant recently. Even if your computer has a good antivirus that you completely trust, this does not provide guaranteed protection against threats aimed at vulnerabilities in Windows itself.

Windows 10 general update includes vulnerability fixes and security updates

Windows 10 updates are especially important for owners of older hardware. After installing Windows 10, most drivers are downloaded automatically: this procedure often includes some measures to improve compatibility in order to further ensure the best performance of the computer. Unfortunately, Microsoft's database is far from complete, which is especially true for outdated hardware. But such information is collected very quickly, and with the next update, a package may come, designed exclusively for one of the computer components.

All kinds of Windows 10 updates and misconceptions associated with them

By "updating the operating system", many users sometimes mean completely different things. To avoid confusion, for a start it is worth taking a closer look at a couple of points: what is an update, what it can be, and what it cannot.

The confusion over the types of updates is pretty serious. It arose due to inaccurate translation of English words into Russian. For example, version is the version, edition is the version, build is the version, and the like.

Table: what is called "Windows 10 Update"

Upgrading to Windows 10 (Version update)Also, this procedure is often referred to as "Upgrading to Windows 10" or "Upgrading Windows", which sounds very ambiguous. Moving to Windows 10 means upgrading from Windows 7 (or 8, or 8.1) to Windows 10. This is the only procedure that literally translates to "Version Upgrade".
Windows 10 also has an internal division into versions, for example, version 1607. Such versions are updated through Windows Update. In fact, this is an update to the assembly, which is called version for beauty.
The upgrade to Windows 10 can be done through the Windows10Upgrade utility, which is described below.
Change edition / edition of Windows (Edition update)Microsoft also refers to this procedure as "Windows Update". Literally it translates as "Edition update". A change of edition means, for example, an upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Professional or another "tariff change".
The article below explains how to do this.
Windows 10 Build updateThe correct name for this procedure is "Build Update". However, when many users say "Update Windows 10", they mean it, so we will refer to this procedure as that in the following.
An assembly update means updating Windows 10. The main way is to automatically update Windows through the "Update Center". However, there are others, which will be discussed below.
Updating Windows Additional Resources Includes everything that is an important application to the system, but is not officially part of it. This includes security features, components, some services, firmware, and more. When Windows 10 says it is updating, most of the time it is referring to the resource update. In Windows 10, it is almost inseparable from the build update, so it should be considered part of the "Windows 10 Update".

What is meant by "Windows 10 Update"

Windows Update is responsible for updating the system in Windows 10. When it starts, it automatically checks for new assemblies and additional resources, and if something is found, it starts downloading and installing immediately. There are other ways to start an update, but the procedure is always the same.

Windows 10 Update is Windows 10 Build Update plus Windows Additional Resources Update. This procedure is indivisible and the only possible option for updating your system.

Updating Windows 10 means updating the operating system and some of its components

There are no ways to update

Due to various misconceptions and users' memory about Windows 7, you can very often find mention of update methods that do not actually exist.

Selective update

Many users mistakenly believe that Selective System Updates are acceptable in Windows 10. Once upon a time, there was indeed information that Microsoft would make such an opportunity for owners of the release of Windows 10 Professional. However, this idea has not been continued, and no choice is expected for users in the near future.

All updates for Windows 10 are downloaded as a single package, and there is no way to separate the one you want from the rest. There are also no special programs or utilities to implement this function. And although there are ways to update the system to a certain version, excluding the subsequent ones, it will not work to choose what to install from this update and what not.

All updates for Windows 10 are packaged in one package that cannot be separated in any way

Manual update

Manual Windows 10 update can be considered a synonym for selective: that is what it implies. Windows 10 only has automatic updates that you can manually start. It's just that it either starts itself, or at the request of the user, and Windows 10 is always updated the same way.

A manual update can be called an offline update via an MSU file downloaded from the Microsoft update catalog

Upgrade to Game Mode

Game mode is enabled in the settings:

  1. Click on the "Start" button and click on the gear-shaped icon to open the "Options".

Click on the "Start" button and click on the gear to open the "Options"

  2. In the window that appears, click on "Games".

In the window that appears, click on "Games"

  3. On the left side of the window, click on "Game Mode" and activate the only switch.

On the left side of the window, click on "Game Mode" and activate the only switch

If you don't have a game mode in the settings, just update the system using any of the suggested methods and try again.

Installing a specific update

It is recommended that you only download the latest Windows 10 update, which is what the system itself does. Any service pack is fully installed and includes changes from all previous OS updates. You won't be able to skip a specific update.

Service packs include changes from all previous ones, if they were not excluded by newer ones. Also, if you have problems after upgrading to the latest version, you can upgrade to any previous one. How to do this is described in the chapter "Upgrading to a specific version". However, remember that any subsequent system update will revert all changes back.

How much updates do and how long does it take to install

Update Center downloads only the most recent update, which is sufficient to update the operating system. Several packages are downloaded simultaneously only if the internal version of Windows 10 is changed. In this case, their weight is summed up. The updates themselves do not accumulate in any way, but simply replace each other. Their sizes are approximately 500 MB for x86 systems and 1 GB for x64 systems.

After applying the changes, the update package itself is removed, but the amount of free space on the hard disk will change:

  • the size of the operating system can change within 1 GB up or down (the weight of the update itself does not affect this);
  • on the C drive, the update cache will remain, which by its weight is 50–80% of the update itself.

The update cache is designed to restore the system in case of failure. Usually it is removed on its own after a while if there is not enough free disk space. The update cache is located in the path C: \ Windows \ SoftwareDistribution \. This is the only trace left. To remove it, you need to disable "Update Center" and start the system in safe mode. How to do both is written in the chapter "How to stop updating Windows 10".

Removing the update cache will not harm the system in any way

The time it will take for the system to update is difficult to predict, since it depends on the capabilities of the computer and the speed of the Internet. The update can take anywhere from 15 minutes to two hours.

If you run the update check yourself, the weight of the update will be shown before downloading it. If the system starts the process itself, and there is little space on the computer, it will notify the user about this. The table below shows the sizes of the latest service packs for all internal versions of Windows 10 that the system will load.

How to update Windows 10

Typically, a Windows 10 update is launched without the user's knowledge. Either the system receives a message about the appearance of something new, or it checks for updates on a timer on its own. If the information about the availability of updates is confirmed, they will start downloading in the background, and the user will only know about this after restarting the computer.

However, you can also request to check for updates yourself.

The main way

The easiest way to start the scan is through Windows Update, which is located in the Options window.

  1. Click on the "Start" button and open "Settings" by clicking on the gear icon.

Click on the "Start" button and open "Options" by clicking on the gear

  2. In the window that opens, click on "Update and Security".

In the window that opens, click on "Update and Security"

  3. Click on the "Check for Updates" button.

Click on the "Check for Updates" button

Through the "Command Line" (forced)

Checking for updates can be disabled through various system settings. If this is the case, you will not be able to update in a general way. In this case, you should use the "Command Line" to force the search for updates to start.

Through utilities

Windows 10 can also be updated through special programs designed just for this purpose.

The utilities will not provide special features. They do not contain the updates themselves, but only redirect the system to the Microsoft server to search for them.

Both applications described below are located on the official Microsoft website in the "Software Downloads" section.

Utilities for updating Windows 10 can be downloaded from the official Microsoft website

Media Creation Tool

Windows10Upgrade (+ upgrade to Windows 10)

It's even easier here, since in the application itself you have to press only one button, but it will be installed on your computer. It also allows you to upgrade to Windows 10 from version 8.1 and earlier.

Download the application from the official Microsoft website, run it as administrator and click "Update Now".

Run Windows10Upgrade as administrator and click "Upgrade Now"

Upgrading to a specific version

These methods can also be thought of as upgrading without an internet connection. They differ from the previous ones in that now the search for the current version of Windows 10 will be carried out not on the Microsoft server, but on the Windows 10 image or a special file.

Through ISO image

Via CAB or MSU file

Files with the CAB and MSU format are special Windows 10 updates that are designed to update systems that do not have access to the Internet. You can download them from the official Microsoft website. The update files should open just like regular .exe files, but if this does not happen, they can be launched through the "Command Line".

Run Command Prompt as administrator and enter one of the following commands:

Change Windows 10 edition (no reinstallation and no data loss)

Changing the edition of Windows 10 is possible only for a more "expensive" version of the system. If you want, for example, to change Enterprise to Professional, only a complete reinstallation of the system will help you: Enterprise is the most expensive edition. But from the Home version, the transition is more than possible.

  1. Click on the "Start" button and click on the gear to go to "Options".

Click on the "Start" button and click on the gear to go to "Options"

  2. In the window that opens, click on the "Update and Security" section.

Click on the "Update and Security" section

  3. On the left side of the window, select Activation and click Change Product Key.

Select the Activation tab and click Change Product Key

  4. Enter one of the following keys (conditional keys: they allow you to change the version, but do not activate it):
  5. If the update does not start automatically, select Windows Update on the left side of the window and click Check for Updates.

Select the "Winodws Update Center" tab and click "Check for Updates"

How to stop Windows 10 update

If you need to urgently interrupt a Windows 10 update that has begun, quickly disconnect your Internet connection. Now you need to run "Command Prompt" as administrator and enter the following commands one by one: net stop wuauserv, net stop bits and net stop dosvc.

Open the "Start" menu, enter "cmd" in the search, right-click on "Command Prompt" and select "Run as administrator"

If you want to prevent downloading updates, the easiest way to do this is through services.

  1. Open the "Start" menu, type "services.msc" and run the found utility.

    Go to "Options"

  2. Go to the Update & Security section.

Open the "Update and Security" section

  3. Expand the Troubleshoot tab and select your problem. The system will give you further instructions on its own.

Expand the Troubleshoot tab and select your problem

Keeping Windows 10 up to date is useful, but not always convenient. Nevertheless, periodic updates for this system are almost vital. It is better to endure an hour-long system update once again than to try to cope with more serious computer problems later.

There is no simpler task than updating Windows 10. Unless, of course, the administrator has not prohibited this operation through group policies. However, then you need to ask the answer from him. The final episode is put automatically. Yes, really to say, there are not many versions to date. For six months now (from the end of July 2016) it has not been possible to update and the latest build is 1607. There are rumors on the Internet that the eleventh version will not be available soon. So we will be installing the latest versions of the dozen for a long time. However, we can hardly believe that there are people in the world who are not at all aware of how to update Windows 10.

All you need is a network connection. Unless there may be a limitation for wireless communication. In all other cases, Windows 10 is automatically updated to the latest version. How to detect if there is a fresh package? The new version does not stand out in anything special. But next to the update there will be an explanatory inscription about what it is. The final release is also unmarked. There is simply no more recent one.

Verification through the Microsoft website

This is the best way to install a new build if it has already been released. The quickest way to check for a new revision is right on the Microsoft website.

Through settings

Many have noticed the absence of the old update center. It is no longer in the interface as such. Here's the new instruction:

In this case, the system puts an ordinary update of the defender. This is not a new build. Otherwise, the explanation would be straightforward. No updates are required yet.

From the command line

According to user reviews, it is not worth updating from the command line. The operation is not always successful. Therefore, we will not consider this process.

Restart options

Sometimes after installing updates, you need to restart your PC. In this case, a warning message will appear. After postponing the installation, you can go to the Restart options link (see the previous screen) to install:

  • Date.
  • Time.

The PC will start updating as scheduled.

Media Creation Tool

Microsoft has another update utility in store for us. So, if you don't like the previous one, you are welcome! The address is the same, but the link is just below (microsoft.com/ru-ru/software-download/windows10).

We pass the welcome screens, accept the license agreement. When prompted, we agree to update this PC immediately.

The tool will take a long time to think.

Attention! Updating with the help of the Media Creation Tool takes significantly longer than it happens with the use of a special utility.

An image of the system will be loaded, which takes up traffic and PC resources, then some other task will be performed. But this is a good way to update the image itself. Which can grow over time with errors (and then restore it via dism and check the system files with the sfc / scannow command). But that's a completely different story.

Through the image

Dozens of images can be obtained in dozens of ways, but the easiest way is to save them to disk using the Media Creation Tool.

Note that this method also does not differ in high speed, therefore, it is described among the latter. Although our PC is already updated, the utility didn't even bother to compare versions. Coming up with an effective installation flow is not like naming users in the plural. Here, ingenuity is needed, and not just the ability to communicate rudely. However, to each his own.

How to update?

From the information received above, it should be clear that the best ways to update are:

  1. Native, via Win + I.
  2. The Windows10Upgrade utility (microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10) available at the Update now link.

Use both, and remember the rest only in case of problems. Here's another confirmation of our words: the installer from the ISO image is going to update us. Even for the sake of the readers, we will not go to such ordeals (everything is already worth it).

You can update the system along with Microsoft programs. To do this, simply go to the Advanced Options of the Update Center and check the appropriate box.
