Windows 10 Anniversary Update Review: Is It Time to Install the Top Ten?

About a year after the release of the final Windows versions 10 Microsoft has prepared a major update for its current OS, which will be released under the name Anniversary. The completion of work on it was preceded by more than two dozen test assemblies, which is a kind of record. The distribution of this update among users will begin in early August. We have prepared a large Windows overview 10 Anniversary Update with visual illustrations and detailed descriptions of all innovations.

Start Screens, Start Menu, Action Center

The first thing the user will pay attention to after Windows installations 10 Anniversary Update - Updated lock and welcome screens. The welcome screen now uses the lock screen background by default, and a new one is triggered when switching between them visual effect, in which the background is slightly darkened and enlarged, leaving its edges out of sight.

In addition to these five main ones, there are a number of minor changes. For example, scrollbars on both the left and right side of the menu now disappear as soon as the cursor leaves their area of effect.

Our next stop is the notification center, over which in the anniversary Microsoft update also worked a lot.

The first thing that catches your eye is the center icon, which was previously located in general group system tray icons, and now moved beyond the clock and learned how to show the number of notifications. It was:

The notification center itself has also changed noticeably. This is how the notifications looked like before:

And this is how everything looks after the update:

Notifications have become much more informative, and general form their entire feed is displayed significantly more pleasantly. In addition, you can now remove notifications by clicking middle button mice.

The lower part of the center, containing shortcuts to in-demand actions, has become a little more customizable: the section dedicated to it in the "Parameters" has been redesigned:

When activating the tablet mode or, for example, the "do not disturb" mode, on the corresponding buttons now, in addition to changing the color, for greater clarity, the inscriptions "enabled" or "disabled" appear briefly:

The updated center must finally learn to fully interact with its counterpart from mobile version OS, provided that you also update it to current version... Additionally, you can set priority parameters for notifications:

Finally, the notification system now interacts with the Edge web browser, which we will discuss in the next section:

Egde in Windows 10 Anniversary Update

Edge browser, which replaced last year Internet Explorer, has become one of those system components to which Microsoft paid the most attention in the anniversary update. Recall that Edge debuted in Windows 10 and is still exclusive to the desktop and mobile versions of this OS. The web browser runs on a lightweight and improved version of the Internet Explorer engine and differs from it in a noticeably lighter interface.

On the other hand, easy new browser was, unfortunately, in terms of the number available settings, initially not offering the user even a few very basic options that are in any program for web surfing. With the Anniversary Update, Microsoft seems to have closed many of these customizability and functionality gaps. However, let's go in order.

Two new items have appeared in the main menu of the program:

The "New features and tips" item leads to a not yet localized page with a list of innovations. But the section "extensions" is many times more interesting, since this is, in fact, the main innovation in the browser.

Extensions created by third party developers, have long been in competing products and allow you to supplement the functionality and individual features web browsers to your liking. With the arrival of Anniversary Update system extensions and their catalog for them first appear in the Microsoft browser.

The only thing that confused us is that the extensions are bound to Windows Store Store and without logging into your account, even what is free, you will not be allowed to download.

The extensions themselves are still quite small compared to competitors. However, the modules most demanded by users like the AdBlock banner cutter are already there.

This catalog will, of course, expand over time.

However, in addition to extensions, the updated Edge has a lot to see. For example, the ability to pin tabs, known to users of all alternative browsers, has appeared, reducing them in size, protecting them from accidental closing:

In the context menu address bar the command "paste and search" is available, which, if not just text, but a link is copied to the clipboard, automatically changes to "paste and go":

Navigation buttons now have their own context menu that displays recent history visits and allows you to go to any of the pages presented in the menu in one click:

The work of the favorites panel has been significantly improved. There you can now create folders, rename items and enable displaying only icons. All of this has not happened before:

In addition, the movement of elements is now accompanied by a nice new animation, and the panel itself has become a little lower in height to take up less space from the viewed content.

Several new Edge capabilities related to the download mechanism. In addition to the integration with the notification center mentioned above, Edge now does not start downloading right away, but first asks the user what he wants to do with the downloaded file: save to the default folder, save to a selected directory, or not start downloading at all:

In this pop-up panel, by the way, the file size is also displayed. In the settings, you can return the previous behavior of the browser when it immediately started loading. There is finally an option that allows you to set the default download directory:

Edge now warns if you try to exit without completing one or more downloads:

An interesting option has been added to the settings section responsible for cleaning the browser that allows you to automatically delete selected items every time you exit Edge:

The representation of the chosen one has changed noticeably. It used to look like this:

You could see the contents of only one directory at a time. Now the favorites are displayed in a hierarchical form, where you can see all links, as well as folders and subfolders:

In addition, the item "sort by name" appeared in the context menu of favorites, and the item "delete" was now moved away from the others by a separator:

Quite a lot in Edge and implicit changes. In particular, the procedure for importing data from other browsers has been improved. Edge has learned to identify secondary Flash content on pages, usually advertising banners, and pause it automatically. With swipes, you can move forward and backward through the pages.

Of the little things, we note the use of drop-down lists in the settings, a new icon for the new tab page, as well as items hidden by default in context menus web pages intended for developers.

A number of new options have arrived on the about: flags service page, where various experimental browser options are located. However, for an ordinary user there is hardly anything especially important there.

Options panel

In Windows 10 Anniversary, Microsoft continues to evolve the Settings panel, saturating it all a large number different settings... However, the classic control panel still does not go anywhere, and a lot of links, including those from "Parameters", lead to it. In addition to the new settings, Windows 10 Settings has received a number of cosmetic improvements.

For example, this is how the first section "System" looked before:

In Windows 10 Anniversary, some changes were made to the logic of the Settings panel. It is especially striking that the names of both new and existing subsections for clarity have received their own miniature icon on the left:

The same monochrome icons appeared not only next to subsections, but also on some pages. For example, in the "Login options" next to the name of each of the Windows login methods, a corresponding icon appeared:

Such little things, obviously, according to the intention of the developers, will make the options more visual and memorable.

Another change is the built-in search. On the home page it is now centered and on regular pages moved from the right side to the left. But the most important thing here is that the search now does not expand to the entire window by default, as it did before:

Instead, a miniature tooltip is shown initially:

Now let's go over the most important new options. In the "System" -> "Applications and Features" section, note that for some applications, the "advanced settings" link has become available:

Click on it and on the page that appears you will stumble upon a completely new function dumping individual applications which will debut in the Anniversary Update:

In the "Internet" there is a new subsection "Status", which clearly displays the status of the network connection and a number of related links to various system applets:

In "Personalization" there was a subsection "Taskbar". If you open the context menu of the taskbar and select "Options" there, then now you will find yourself in this subsection instead of the old window. There are no new options there, in the subsection all the previous settings are only grouped:

A couple of new switches are available in the settings:

In the same section "Personalization", but now in the subsection "Colors" there is an updated palette of colors. This is what the previous one looked like:

And here is its version from the Windows 10 Anniversary Update:

The palette, as you can see, has been slightly redesigned, it has become more compact, and the selected color is now marked with a "checkmark", instead of a barely noticeable rectangle.

Here, just below, there are new options:

First, the color in the title bar can now be customized separately from the color in the Start menu, taskbar, and Action Center. Previously, the color was adjusted simultaneously for these four elements. Now the color of the windows is taken out separately from the rest.

Secondly, the interface mode switch appeared from light (by default) style to dark:

However, not everything with this mode on this moment ideally. To begin with, only universal apps and the control panel change color. Common applications, Explorer, and with it most of the context menus throughout the system, remain light.

The Edge browser seems to live separately from the main settings: although the dark style is available there, for some reason you have to manually enable it separately. Finally, in some places the bright inscriptions look too contrasting against the black background.

Having played with colors, we went to the "Privacy" section: the settings here have significantly increased in many subsections. Now you can deny applications access to the notification center, data about the user's location, and you can also prevent them from managing other applications.

In Updates and Security, under Windows Defender, you can now configure how Defender interacts with Action Center. In addition, new offline check functionality has been introduced.

Finally, in the same section, but already in the subsection "Windows Update", it became possible to set the so-called active period.

During this period, the system will not automatically reboot the device, even if it makes sure you are not using it.

It is worth noting that some smaller innovations debuted in the "Options" panel. To talk about each of them would mean a completely exorbitant increase in this already rather big article.

Other changes in Windows 10 Anniversary Update

Finally, let's briefly go over the changes that do not affect the Start menu, Action Center, the browser and the Settings panel, that is, they are not related to those elements that the corporation has worked on the most.

To begin with, Microsoft is still doing design on the sly. Well, or, according to at least, by what she puts into this word.

Control windows were redrawn in the Anniversary Update accounts users. This is how they looked before:

These are now:

Work continues on icons. For example, here's how the icon was redrawn windows defender (new variant below):

The defender itself, as we wrote above, received some update, which he himself will tell you about at the first start:

With built-in programs in the Anniversary Update, things are controversial. Microsoft continues to add and remove universal apps from the system. This time, for example, Finance and Sports fell out of favor. Also Phone and Phone Manager could not be found. However, hardly anyone will grieve for them.

Another application that seems to be remote from the system is Sway, designed to create interactive presentations. One of the Western sites indicated that it was not actually cut out of the system, but made part of the Photos application, but we still did not understand how to access Sway from it. In addition, the Photos themselves, upon a cursory acquaintance, were automatically closed twice with us.

Old notes were removed from the system and replaced with a universal one Sticky version Notes.

The main new application in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update was universal version Skype. The first acquaintance with her with us, however, turned out so-so.

After logging into the account, drink Skype program for some reason, it started right away with dark theme decoration, while the system used a light one.

Going into the settings, it turned out that to change the Skype style from dark to light, you need to restart the program, and you must restart it manually.

When the universal Skype was launched again, we saw that the settings were still with a gulkin's nose. User in best case a dozen options are available, and the window with them cannot rationally use the area available to it, which is why even this small number of parameters has to be scrolled.

Honestly, acquaintance with universal applications, at least from Microsoft itself, it makes you wonder how primitive they are compared to the traditional ones. However, here, perhaps, we are mistaken and someone will correct us in the comments.

But back to the overview of the remaining innovations in the Anniversary Update. An auto-hide option is available for the taskbar in tablet mode, a set of emoticons has been redesigned, and the system search can now search in OneDrive. Recognition support handwriting available for 23 additional languages... In the pop-up interface for adjusting the volume, switching between audio output sources is implemented.

The clock and calendar are now displayed on all monitors when using a multi-monitor configuration. A new Win + Alt + D combination has been added to invoke their pop-up interface. The system tray calendar is now integrated with system application The calendar:

Many changes have been made to Cortana. This assistant, surprisingly, still does not support the Russian language, therefore, instead of a detailed identification of innovations, we will only mention the main ones. In particular, the ability to search for music has been improved, the toolkit for creating reminders has been expanded, and the integration has been carried out. voice assistant with the Maps application.

Enhanced Cortana's cross-device capabilities, including battery notification, Find My Phone, and map data transfer from one device to another.

Finally, work continues to improve the functionality of virtual desktops. You can now switch between them with four-finger gestures on the touchpad. In addition, you can now pin one window or all windows from one application to all virtual desktops at once:

Conclusion

It would seem that the Anniversary update, released a year later and being the second major package of changes, should bring Windows 10, as they say, to mind, finally making the system "polished" and holistic. However, this is not the case in practice.

In the top ten, two control panels still coexist, voice Cortana assistant, which is one of the flagship innovations of the OS, is still not available in Russian, as well as in many other languages. In heart Windows interface- nothing has changed in the conductor, since the corporation is still preparing for its complete rework in the future. And this is not to mention all sorts of little things like pop-up here and there rudiments from Windows 7 and 8.

Thus, if you were waiting for a completely finished system, honed to the smallest detail, then, as it seems to us, Windows 10 is not yet one. We can congratulate users who have been using the top ten successfully since last year: with the arrival of the Anniversary Update, they are turning from alpha testers to beta testers).

Later Windows Year 10 accounts for less than a quarter of the desktop OS market

On the other hand, with the Anniversary Update, the Start menu, virtual desktops and Action Center are becoming more usable. Edge will become real for someone workhorse with extensions and basic capabilities that were not there before. The Options panel continues its evolution, preparing to finally become a single center system management. Leapfrog with applications for communication seems to end with the advent of the new Skype.

Eventually anniversary update no doubt a step in the right direction. Here are just a couple more, at least the same steps, to win over most Microsoft users to the side of Windows 10.

July 29, 2016 Released updated version Windows 10, which got the number 1607 (build 14393). Operating system has changed significantly, so many users have a question, Windows 10 Anniversary Update how to update so that there are no problems.

Why update 1607 won't install

The reasons are as follows:

  • using not Windows 10, but, for example, Windows 8.1. Remove your version of the system and install exactly the tenth;
  • lack of space on drive C. To successfully install Windows 10 with Update 1607 from scratch, you need at least 16 GB disk space... The type of media on your computer doesn't matter. The main thing is that the specified amount of memory is available on it;
  • lack of internet connection. Check if the connection is working. Windows 10 has built-in LAN / Wi-Fi drivers so that you can immediately download and install the 1607 update (or any other). If there is no cable or wireless connection, but there is, for example, a 4G modem from Yota, install this modem. But if you have a smartphone or tablet operating in hotspot mode, turn on the distribution of 3G / 4G via Wi-Fi on the gadget itself and connect to it. With the advent of the Internet Windows system 10 will request and install the latest updates;
  • conflict with third party antivirus(for example, ESet NOD32 / SmartSecurity, Kaspersky Anti-Virus, etc.). Disable tracking functions, remove the application from autorun, stop the antivirus service (if any), preventing it from starting automatically (even without the application itself), etc. All these actions are called unloading antivirus.;

    Third-party antivirus may cause problems installing the Anniversary Update

  • conflict with wireless communication (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi). If you already have a cable connection or a gadget that works over a USB cable as a modem, disconnect wireless communication... To do this, go to "Start" - "Settings" - "Networks and Internet" - "Airplane mode" and turn on the flight mode;

    Move the slider to the right to turn off the built-in radio

  • conflict with account control, Security mode Boot to BIOS / EFI of a computer or tablet. Disable them;
  • conflict with devices connected to the computer. Disconnect all of them except the mouse, keyboard and monitor (if a monitor or projector is connected to the tablet). Additional modules may need to be disabled random access memory used to "overclock" the performance of a PC or laptop;
  • incompatibility of earlier updates with later ones, leading to the failure of the latter (some or all at once). Requires a point solution to the problem with support Microsoft developers, which ends with the selection of the correct sequence of actions when installing some updates "on top" (after) others.

The last point requires clarification. For example, if it is specified that update KB9999921 (numbers are fictitious and taken for comparison) will not be installed over the earlier update KB9999907, since the latter was incompatible with the even earlier installation package KB9999904, and the installation ended with a "rollback" after restarting Windows. And here Microsoft releases the installation package KB9999922, which solved all the above problems. Then all previous ones (KB9999904 / 9999907/9999921) are deleted from the Windows system and from the "update cache" and the update KB9999922 is installed. The problem will most likely be resolved.

Always follow the Microsoft install sequence for updates and patches. The advice from experienced users is based on real events through which the first wave of people wanting to try the latest Windows updates is going through. It even works in amateur Windows assemblies subsequently "packed" experienced users v ISO format and distributed on torrent trackers.

If the update ends with a rollback or errors, contact Microsoft Support.
