WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra NAS Video Surveillance | Introduction

The role of a well-thought-out video surveillance system in modern business cannot be overestimated: it helps prevent the theft of property and corporate information, resolve conflicts that arise with clients and within the work team, respond in a timely manner to man-made threats (smoke, burst water lines) - in other words, provide effective protection of material assets, intellectual property and even the reputation of the enterprise. As a rule, the management of large companies is well aware of these advantages, allocating an impressive budget for security. In addition, for a number of institutions (hotels, restaurants, educational institutions) there are strict legal regulations governing the quality of shooting, the time of storage of archives and other aspects, the neglect of which entails serious legal consequences.

When it comes to organizing video surveillance for the office, the issue of cost optimization is especially acute. In this case, the infrastructure should be not only productive and reliable, but also economical, and the equipment should take up a minimum of space, because renting additional space for individual entrepreneurs and small businesses is often an unaffordable luxury. In such conditions, it becomes optimal to create a security system based on compact network storages.

An excellent option would be to use one of the older models of the WD My Cloud line (EX2 Ultra, EX4100, DL2100, PR2100, PR4100). The choice of device is determined by the requirements for the system: the number of cameras, the planned load and the estimated time of archive storage. Each of them supports Milestone Arcus Surveillance software - the software platform is installed in a couple of clicks from WD's own repository, allowing you to turn the NAS into a full-featured video recorder with the function of viewing, recording, storage and remote control.

How to do it? Let's look at the example of a two-disk WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra. Suppose we are given the task of covering the space of a small office and the surrounding area. The main areas of interest are the hall where employees are accommodated, the checkpoint, and the entrance to the building. To solve it, we need only three IP cameras, the NAS itself and any router with PoE support. Let's go through the characteristics of the equipment.

WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra NAS Video Surveillance | Brief overview of the equipment used

For the test bench, we will take 3 Hikvision IP cameras of various models and purposes:

1. Hikvision DS-2CD2622F-IS. Highly secure solution for outdoor use. The housing is IP66 certified – it is absolutely impervious to dust and withstands even the directed impact of strong water jets.

By removing the protective lens cover, we will have access to the SD card compartment. Drives up to 128 gigabytes are supported, so you can create a local backup of your latest recordings. There is also a "Reset" button here, which allows you to reset all settings to factory settings forcibly.

The device received all the necessary functionality for conducting round-the-clock surveillance, including a mechanical infrared filter with automatic mode switching and support for a high dynamic range signal with additional digital processing (DWDR), which guarantees high image contrast, regardless of the quality and uniformity of illumination. The maximum frame rate at 1080p is 25 fps, allowing for real-time recording. This video camera can be used to monitor the surrounding area.

2. Hikvision DS-2CD2132-I. A dome camera that can be used equally well both indoors and outdoors. The viewing angle is 75.8°, and the IR range reaches 30 meters.

The camera does not have servos, but the lens tilt can be adjusted manually during installation. The resolution range of this model is wider: 1280 x 720 (25 fps), 1920 x 1080 (25 fps), and even 2048 x 1536 (20 fps). Due to its compact size, it can be used for surveillance in large areas - conference rooms, open-type offices, etc.

3. Hikvision DS-2CD2432F-IW. A small camera without special protection, however, it received a wide-angle lens (in 1080p the field of view is 98.5 °) and an automatic IR filter.

The multifunctional adjustable stand allows you to place the device on any horizontal surface, mount it to a wall or ceiling. At the end there is a slot for SD-cards (cards up to 128 GB are also supported). Among the features - the presence of a pyroelectric motion sensor, a built-in microphone and speaker - you can organize feedback from the security post. This makes the camera an ideal option for equipping checkpoints.

All of the listed devices can work both from a 12VDC power supply and connect to a PoE router that supports the IEEE 802.3af standard (even the most powerful of the cameras presented requires no more than 7.5 watts). The latter option greatly simplifies the laying of communications.

Selected as a DVR WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra, which is a logical development of the ideas embodied in the device of 2014 - My Cloud Mirror.

Compared to its predecessor, file storage WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra received a more efficient processor (dual-core Marvell ARMADA 385 with a frequency of 1.3 GHz) and 1024 megabytes of DDR3 RAM. The key selection factor is support for combining hard drives into a RAID 1 mirror array. As for the design, it has not undergone fundamental changes. Inside the plastic case there is a steel frame with stiffeners and rubber dampers, which protects the installed HDD from vibrations and mechanical stress. Active cooling is provided by a quiet 35mm fan.

The most crucial step is the choice of the drives themselves. Considering that we are going to use a compact NAS, we need really roomy and cold hard drives, capable of writing several FullHD streams with a frame rate of 25 fps (modern requirements for picture quality, including legislative ones, are quite high), as well as parallel reading and playing video, if necessary view archive or upload data. The listed requirements are fully satisfied by the WD Purple line.

Winchesters were specially designed for operation in round-the-clock surveillance systems. Unlike drives for personal computers, they received support for the Streaming Feature Set - a set of additional commands that set the priority of operations. They are controlled through the WD AllFrame algorithm, which is designed to ensure the stability of recording streaming video from multiple sources, preventing frame drops. As in other Western Digital server solutions, there is also a Time Limited Error Recovery function that helps prevent the hard drive from being mistakenly dropped out of the RAID array if the standard time allotted for correction is exceeded. RAFF linear and angular vibration protection is also implemented, thanks to which the optimal information transfer rate is maintained (according to tests, performance losses will not exceed 4% even with strong mechanical impact).

However, the main advantage is the HelioSeal technology. If an ordinary HDD is filled with air, then inside WD Purple is rarefied helium. It was thanks to this that the volume of a standard hard drive was increased to 8 terabytes: a decrease in environmental resistance and turbulence made it possible to use thinner PMR plates and increase the recording density. Plus, because the spin-up power has been reduced, the drives consume 26% less power and are up to 5°C cooler.

I must say that I don’t really like to deal with network settings, so the illustrated three-step instruction inspired optimism.

Everything is really simple:

  • connect the power supply
  • we connect the network cable to the device and to the free port of the home router (router),
  • we go to the My Cloud Setup website (it is indicated in the memo), and then the system independently determines the device,
  • create an account,
  • we come up with a login and password for ourselves and all those to whom we want to give access to the "cloud".

In the future, if necessary, you can and should use the My Cloud Setup link for settings.

The device is ready to go! This is what the web interface looks like:

You can visit the manufacturer's WD Learning Center website. There are instructions for use, useful tips, a description of all the characteristics.

Software for more efficient use of the capabilities of the "cloud":

For example, WD Setup Software automatically maps the device as a network drive to your computer, no need to fiddle with settings.

Opportunities

Specialists will be pleased with the wide possibilities for setting up and using the device. I will analyze the main ones from the position of an ordinary user.

The main purpose of My Cloud EX2 Ultra is the safe storage of information with secure access to it via the Internet. You can access your files and set up your drive from anywhere in the world through MyCloud.com or the My Cloud smartphone app. Of course, the storage itself must be connected to the Internet and the network at this time.

The device can automatically synchronize selected files from different computers using the WD Sync function and to the My Cloud, as well as make backups. On the personal computer to which the device is connected, you can directly drop files to a shared folder through Explorer.

The My Cloud mobile application is available for free download in the AppStore and Google Play, but, alas, it is not available to owners of Windows Phone smartphones.

Synchronization between the "cloud" and the gadgets on which the application is installed occurs almost instantly. So the current versions of the files will always be at hand.

There is also a shared access for collaboration through the "cloud": just add a user by entering his data (name and email), or create user groups (for example, home, work, vacation).

Specify the desired folder with access rights, send the link. It doesn't matter what's inside: photos or documents. In general, you can both allow users to edit, delete and add documents, and give only viewing rights. And you can also share a folder with one specific person without the possibility of forwarding the link.

Unlike online services, there are no file size limits. No need to split the archive with photos, just upload it to your "cloud" and send the link. Everything!

I liked the fact that you can upload photos and videos directly to your computer in an archive or individually through the My Cloud site. This is convenient, for example, if you use iOS devices. Simply sync photos from your smartphone to the cloud and then seamlessly transfer photos back and forth.

Earlier this year, Western Digital Corporation updated its NAS lineup with the 2-drive WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra. The new device received a dual-core processor and 1 GB of RAM. At the same time, the model retained its compact size and quiet cooling system. Delivery options are provided both without hard drives and with a complete set of hard drives of the WD Red series with a capacity of up to 8 TB inclusive (16 TB per device).

The solution is aimed at home users and professionals. It is compatible with Windows, OS X and Linux platforms. Built-in software My Cloud OS 3 supports common data access protocols, cloud technologies and backup systems. In addition, it is possible to expand the capabilities of the NAS by installing additional software modules.

Contents of delivery

The NAS is packaged in a familiar cardboard box. Despite the relatively compact dimensions (about 30 × 18 × 24 cm), no handles were provided here for ease of transportation.

The devices of this line are designed, among other things, for sale in retail, so the packaging design is quite bright and includes photos of the model, connection diagram, main features and use cases, technical requirements, delivery kit. Note that all texts are fully translated into Russian, which, of course, indicates the attention of the manufacturer to our market. Since the model has several options for completing hard drives, there is a sticker on the box indicating their total volume.

Inside the box, in thick protective inserts, there is the drive itself (recall that the model comes with hard drives and enhanced protection is in demand here) and a box with a power supply, a cable for connecting to a local network and several paper documents. The power supply has a "female" format and 12V 3A parameters. In addition, it supports interchangeable plugs for different regions.

The instruction for starting the device in this case consists of three illustrations, which is probably not very convenient for novice users of this type of equipment.

On the manufacturer's website, you can download electronic versions of documentation, firmware updates, proprietary software. The warranty for the device in question is three years. Additionally, 30 days of technical support by phone is provided.

Appearance

The new NAS model retained the appearance of its predecessor. The outer elements of the case are made of dark matte plastic with a touch of metallic. Overall dimensions are about 10×15×17 centimeters, which is quite small for a two-disk model.

On the front panel there is a block with three multi-color indicators - system status and disk status. They are located on a black insert, which also contains the name of the device. There are no ports or buttons on this side.

By the way, this device does not have a power switch, so if necessary (for example, to move it to another place), you will need to put the model into sleep mode via the Web interface, and to turn it on, reconnect the power cable.

The side surfaces are solid and there is nothing interesting on them. On the back we see the power supply input, a gigabit network connector with indicators, two USB 3.0 ports, a hidden reset button and a Kensington lock hole.

There are four rubber feet on the bottom, and the rest of the space is used as a ventilation grille. The top panel of the case is a cover for disk bays and is also covered with holes in the ventilation system.

Overall, we have a compact device with a neutral and strict appearance that will look good both in the office and at home. The remark can be if only to the absence of a power button.

Design and hardware characteristics

Inside the case is a metal frame. Hard drives are installed vertically in it, and between them, like in a sandwich, is the drive circuit board.

The disks are accessible from the outside and inside the user has nothing to do. In addition, the case is quite difficult to disassemble. This may create problems for cleaning the internal fan. However, the latter works relatively rarely and, at least during our tests, was almost always stopped.

In any case, it is desirable to prevent dust from entering the case through the top panel. Note that the declared operating temperature range is from 5 to 35 degrees.

The product is based on the Marvell Armaga 385 SoC, equipped with two processing cores that operate at a frequency of 1.3 GHz. The amount of RAM is 1 GB and flash memory is 256 MB. All controllers are built into the main processor, which makes it possible to implement two SATA ports, a gigabit network adapter and two USB 3.0 ports on this single chip.

The ports are used to connect a UPS (compatibility list is available on the manufacturer's website) or external drives. The latter may contain partitions with NTFS, FAT32, EXT2/3/4, HFS+ or exFAT.

The power consumption of the chip is declared at 5 watts. It has a small aluminum radiator, which is enough in this case.

The drive was tested using software version 2.21.117.

Assembly and initial setup

In our case, the device came with hard drives and was ready to work out of the box. If you buy an “empty” model, you will need to install two special-shaped screws on each hard drive, open the top panel, dismantle the mounting plate and insert the drives into the appropriate bays, then assemble everything in the reverse order. There should not be any difficulties with these operations.

Further, following the complete instructions, we connect the LAN cable and power, wait for the download and go to the mycloud.com/setup website in the browser. The device is automatically searched on the network and you are prompted to select several basic settings for the drive. This, in particular, the interface language, administrator password, MyCloud account for remote access and the option to enable auto-update. It is also suggested to register your purchase. The firmware is in flash memory, so no additional steps are required to install it. One has only to check for updates, as well as set the time zone for notifications and schedules to work correctly.

Note that the drives are factory set to a mirror configuration, so if you want to change it, you need to do so now while your files are not written to the device.

After that, the device is ready to work in the local network. In particular, it has several shared folders with unlimited access. For more detailed configuration of the NAS, you will need to refer to its Web interface.

Firmware capabilities

The interface of the drive differs little from the previously considered solutions from this manufacturer. At the top of the window there are icons for quick access to managing USB drives, viewing recent notifications, calling the help system, exiting and power management. Next comes the main menu bar, which contains eight items.

The start window provides key information about the operation of the device, including disk space statistics, the status of hardware sensors, the availability of firmware updates, network load, processor and RAM, the number of users and applications.

Access rights are controlled through the traditional mechanism of user and group accounts. Positioning for business applications is confirmed, in particular, by the ability to work with a Windows domain. But you can also use the local database of users and groups. It also supports the control of disk quotas for users and groups. To simplify the creation of a large number of accounts, there is an import point for a pre-prepared list.

You can create any number of shared folders (resources) on existing volumes. Individual access rights are specified for each of them, as well as additional options - a trash can for deleted files, file indexing by a media server, access via additional protocols, and others. Note that to work with data on external drives, you can use not only SMB, but also other protocols, as well as manage access rights.

As is already clear from the name of the model, the manufacturer pays special attention to the implementation of cloud remote access technologies. For this service to work, you need to create an account on the corporate portal and then configure it to match the user of the NAS.

To ensure efficient operation, the drive tries to configure your router to translate standard ports on its own. If necessary (for example, if they are busy with other services), you can change their numbers.

The NAS has built-in backup features. The user can schedule multiple jobs involving local folders, remote drives, ElephantDrive and Amazon S3 cloud services.

The task parameters provide for specifying the mode and schedule. To restore information, there is a corresponding button in each task. In addition, it is possible to back up photos from compatible devices when they are connected to a specified shared folder.

The product supports multiple disk array configurations - two separate disks, RAID0, RAID1 and JBOD. From the possibilities of migration without data loss, there is only a transition from one disk to a mirror. In the case of working with RAID1, the recovery operation after replacing a failed hard drive is supported. The main file system for user data is ext4. Locally marketed models do not support volume encryption. They differ in the last part of the article - "EEUE" versus "EESN" for Europe. In particular, the model considered in this article has the article WDBSHB0040JCH-EEUE.

The solution also supports the creation of iSCSI volumes, which can be useful in virtualization scenarios. In addition, you can attach remote iSCSI volumes to the drive, which will be represented by separate network resources, though only public ones.

Standard S.M.A.R.T. technologies are used to monitor the status of hard drives. Probably, the system independently runs tests from time to time. But to see the "raw" values of the parameters, unfortunately, is impossible.

In the "Applications" section there are four pre-installed modules - three for offline downloading files via HTTP, FTP and BitTorrent protocols, as well as a program for managing files through a browser.

In the same menu item, you can add new applications from the official online catalog or downloaded files. More about them will be discussed later in the article.

The last group of the main menu is "Settings". On the first page, you can change the network name of the drive, set the clock, enable cloud service, enable hard drive sleep mode, set up a power management schedule, enable Apple Time Machine service, empty the deleted files recycle bin.

Network settings include IPv4/IPv6 settings, enable additional file access protocols (FTP, AFP, NFS, WebDAV), SNMP, SSH, DDNS client, SMB version selection, Windows domain connection, and more. FTP supports changing port numbers, passive mode, encryption, FXP, encoding selection, limiting the number of connections and speed. Note that the manufacturer warns that using SSH may void the warranty.

Through the Web interface, you can also configure port translation rules on a UPnP-compatible router for various device services.

On a separate page, you can enable the DLNA media server service (using the popular Twonky solution) and the iTunes server.

The Utilities section provides options for manually launching disk and system checks, viewing the event log, managing settings, and mounting ISO images.

The notification system works with email and SMS. For the latter, you will need to specify an external gateway server. There can be several recipients, while setting the "severity" level of notifications is common to all.

The last item here is a firmware update. Automatic verification, installation from the Web interface via the Internet or from a pre-loaded file is supported.

In addition to the system administrator, ordinary users can also use the Web interface. They will have access to the file manager, download management, status viewing.

In general, the set is quite traditional. We note support for several protocols for network access to files, the ability to access the console of the network drive via SSH, work with iSCSI, and control the status and volume of folders.

Additional packages and branded programs

The solution under consideration supports the expansion of the standard firmware by installing additional software packages. At the time of writing the article, 16 modules were available for My Cloud EX2 Ultra in the official catalog.

You can view the full current list at. Of the most interesting, we note the following: content management systems Joomla! and WordPress, implementation of a phpBB-based forum, aMule and Transmission offline file upload systems, Icecast, Plex Media Server and SqueezeCenter media servers, a module for synchronizing selected folders with DropBox storage, Anti-Virus Essentials with updated databases and a scan schedule, an IP video surveillance system - Milestone ARCUS Surveillance cameras (a license for two cameras is included, it can be expanded to sixteen for free until December 31, 2016), a home automation system based on the Z-Wave protocol.

Installed modules appear in the list of the "Applications" section and can be further removed if necessary. There is also an option to install new programs from files downloaded from the Internet. Well, having access to the console of the embedded operating system allows you to implement more complex options for expanding the list of tasks solved by the drive.

On the manufacturer's website, you can download several programs for working with the device and its maintenance. In particular, these are:

For mobile devices based on Android and iOS, it is proposed to use the My Cloud program.

It allows you to access files located on the drive (including viewing videos and photos, as well as listening to music), exchange data with a mobile device and popular cloud services, organize backup of photos and videos from a smartphone to a network drive, and share your files with friends.

Testing

As we saw earlier, modern ARM-based NAS are able to show the maximum results for a gigabit network connection in the main use cases. Let's see how WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra handles this. Testing was carried out on complete WD Red hard drives with a capacity of 2 TB. Recall that we use these models for testing network drives supplied without hard drives. The tool is traditionally the Intel NASPT package with our standard set of eight templates. It ran on a client with 64-bit Windows 8.1. And the network card was represented by the Intel Ethernet Server Adapter I350. Other than creating a disk volume, folder, and user, no other NAS options have been changed.

The results are in line with expectations. The maximum speeds that can be achieved on streaming operations with a large file exceed 100 MB/s. Random access to data, as usual, is noticeably slower, especially when writing.

The second graph shows the results of testing with a USB 3.0 connected, using the appropriate docking station, the hard drive of the same brand, which was formatted in the EXT4 and NTFS file systems.

In the case of using the "native" EXT4 for the embedded operating system, the performance of the external drive differs little from the speeds of the hard drive installed inside the case. Working with NTFS is also fast in most cases, unless random write operations are used.

The following illustration shows the capabilities of the built-in backup service when exchanging data between an internal and external drive. The operation was carried out with one file of 32 GB.

Here, the performance is already limited by the characteristics of the hard drive.

Now let's check the temperature regime of the device and its power consumption "from the outlet". The first graph shows the maximum recorded temperatures during hard drive sleep, idle and operation.

As we can see, there are no comments on the model's cooling system. Note that there are no settings for fan operation modes. It turns on, apparently, at a fixed speed in case of exceeding a certain temperature threshold of the system or disks. It is not possible to determine the algorithm of work more precisely. In general, the noise level of the NAS is negligible and it is quite possible to use it not only in the office, but also in residential areas.

The power consumption of the device is low and does not exceed 15 W with two complete hard drives with a capacity of 2 TVs. These results are also comparable to other NAS on the same platform.

Conclusion

Like other models in the series of a similar design, WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra has an attractive and compact design that provides effective cooling of drives with minimal noise. Thanks to the improved hardware, the device shows excellent results in network speed tests. In addition, we note the presence of USB 3.0 ports, which will be useful for backup scenarios and for expanding the amount of disk space. At the same time, the power consumption of the network drive is small.

The line's embedded software supports most popular network data access protocols and can be used with all common client operating systems. The web interface for setting up the device is quite convenient, even a non-specialist can deal with it. Of the additional built-in services, we note backup tools, monitoring functions, a media server, offline file download modules. Support for cloud technologies for remote data access should also be attributed to the pluses, although their implementation is a little confusing at some points. Note that the solution supports the expansion of firmware capabilities by installing additional software modules.

Proprietary software for Windows and OS X can be useful in some scenarios, such as when you need to synchronize files on the client and NAS. The mobile application allows you to work with data from smartphones and tablets, but the company does not have a solution for managing and controlling the NAS itself.

The WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra NAS is supplied both in an "empty" form without disks, or complete with hard drives. In the first case, its cost is comparable to two-disk models from other well-known manufacturers. At the same time, it wins in terms of formal technical characteristics, but is clearly less interesting from a software point of view if you plan to use the NAS to solve a large number of additional tasks. At the moment it is difficult to assess the attractiveness of versions with installed hard drives due to the lack of offers, but we hope that the manufacturer will be able to offer good prices for them.

We thank the company for providing the switch for testing

WD My Cloud EX2 Network Attached Storage (NAS) Overview

The topic of network drives (NAS) has been of interest to me for a long time. Because nowadays it is practically impossible to do without separate autonomous drives, especially in a family where you are not the only one using a computer. I have studied many models - from highly advanced and expensive to simple and fairly cheap - and continue to study what appears on the market. align="justify">Today we'll take a look at a pretty nice looking home NAS from Western Digital called WD My Cloud EX2 . In this series, the company releases this model, two-disk, and four-disk My Cloud EX4. So, a two-disk home drive My Cloud EX2.

Specifications CPU: Marvell ARMADA 370, 2 × ARMv7, 1.2 GHz
RAM: 512MB DDR3
Number of disks: 2
Protocols: FTP, CIFS/SMB, AFP, NFS, SNMP, SSH, HTTP, P2P
Interface: 2 x USB Host 3.0, Gigabit Ethernet
The size: 171.45×99.06×154.94mm
Weight: 800 g (without discs)
Price: in Moscow 12-14 thousand rubles (without discs) Equipment Box painted in WD blue.
Inside: NAS, power adapter, RJ-45 network cable, hardware, brochures.
Appearance and features The design of the drive is very reminiscent of external drives from WD, which are sold under the WD Passport brand (I had a couple of these).

On the front panel there is a power indicator and two drive indicators. On the top end there is a latch that, when pressed, opens two drive bays. On the rear panel there are two USB 3.0 ports, a Gigabit Ethernet port, a power adapter input and a Kensington lock.

Open the top cover. There are two drive bays and a special latch with a screw, which must first be removed.

Western Digital kindly provided two of its WD Red drives for the NAS test, designed to work specifically in network drives in 24×7 mode, and I installed them in this NAS.
The disks, by the way, are different - one is WD Red Pro, the other is just WD Red. In general, I have been using WD Red drives (as well as WD Green for docking stations and WD Black for a computer) for a long time - the impressions are the best, there have never been any problems. I inserted the drives, screwed the latch.

The NAS looks good, the workmanship and materials are very solid. The drive is a bit shorter than conventional dual-disk NAS, where the drives are usually horizontal, but higher. It doesn't have a power button as a class, but on the other hand, such devices usually work in 24x7 mode, so why would they need a power button?

Device operation I connected the NAS to power, connected it to the router with the supplied RJ-45 cable. For the initial setup, you will need a program that you need to download from the WD website here - "WD My Cloud EX2 Installer". Downloaded, installed, launched. The program detected the device and offered to format the installed hard drives.
After formatting, the program launched the NAS control panel.
There was a message in the control panel that there was some problem with the second drive and the firmware needed to be updated. I updated the firmware, went to the "Storage" section to deal with the disk and possible configuration options.
In the "Storage" section, you can set the mode of disks used. And, as expected, there are several. JBOD mode. In this case, it means that two disks are used strictly separately. (Although in many network drives, JBOD means the use of two disks as a single space.) Plus, it is possible to switch from the mode used to JBOD, that is, save data.
Combine mode- two disks are used as one space. That is, you get, as it were, one 6 TB disk (when using two 3 TB each). Reliability is low: if one disk fails, you will most likely lose all data. Well, that is, some files will be saved on the second disk, but which ones and whether you really need them is a big question. RAID0- two disks provide their total volume as one disk, the performance is maximum, but the reliability is minimal. Something happens to one disk - everything is covered. This mode makes sense to choose only if the data is constantly backed up to other media. RAID1- the contents of the first disk are mirrored on the second disk. Maximum reliability (two copies), performance is not very high, the total capacity is equal to the capacity of one disk. I formatted the disks in JBOD. Everything went fine, there were no error messages. Got two drives of 3 TB.
Next, go to the "Resources" section - configure folders. There is a Public folder (for everyone), a SmartWare folder (for everyone), and a TimeMachineBackup folder for storing copies of Apple computer files.
You can create any of your folders on any drive (if they are considered different) and set access types for different users: write-read, read-only, invisible folder.
You can also connect external drives to the NAS via USB, give them your own names and set the types of access.

Users are set in the "Users" section. If you need to restrict some users from accessing some folders (writable or even hide some folders on the home network), then set the appropriate users. This is done quite simply, but for some reason you can’t use Cyrillic.
To restrict user access to a specific folder, you need to turn off "Public" access in the resources and set permissions for specific users.
For example, like this. Read-write access, read-only, the folder is hidden.
In the resources section, the administrator (that's you) can also set access types for each user. For folders open to everyone, the default access is set to read-write, for folders, not for everyone, you can set the appropriate permissions.
Cloud access - You can set up access to your NAS via the Internet from any smartphone tablet (and computer).
This is protected: you must first obtain a special code for each device, then install the My Cloud program on the device, and then enter the appropriate code for access. After that, on your smartphone-tablet from anywhere, you get the appropriate access to your drive folders and can use uploaded media files. Here, for example, access from a smartphone. Folders - all files.

Video.

Photo.

Music.

Similarly, you can remotely connect to this drive from ordinary computers using the WD My Cloud software.

In the "Backups" section, you can set whether to save various folders on internal or external media. USB backup - save some drive folders on external drives connected to the NAS.
Create a job to copy to a mapped drive.
This can be done automatically, according to a schedule. The mode of adding new data to an already created archive is also supported.
Data can also be copied to the cloud, but only ElephantDrive and Amazon S3 are supported here. But Dropbox is not supported, which is a little insulting. However, copying to Dropbox can be provided by other means.
Section "Applications". Here you can configure the operation of various boot protocols.
Well, the settings of the drive. There is the possibility of leaving disks in sleep mode when not in use - a useful thing.

Connecting DLNA media server and iTunes.

And various diagnostic and recovery tools. By the way, ISO image support is also configured here - also a useful thing. I checked how it all works. Copying large files from a computer disk to a NAS disk showed an average of 55 megabytes per second - this is quite a normal speed.

A similar copy to my home NAS drive (Synology DS213) shows the same results - 55-57 megabytes per second.

Copying large files to an external drive connected via USB 3.0 is twice as slow: about 25-26 megabytes per second. It's the same on my NAS.

Simultaneous copying of large files to the first and second drives of the drive.

Simultaneously reading a large file from a drive disk and copying a large file to the same disk.

Observations at work and conclusions The drive is very quiet - it is almost inaudible, even when it is under constant load. The temperature of the disks was normal (less than 40 degrees), I never heard the fan at all. Here, for example, is the diagnostic data at the moment when huge (several tens of gigabytes) archive files were uploaded to the NAS.

Now about the price. The cost of this NAS without disks in Moscow is about 12-14 thousand rubles (about $170 at the current exchange rate). The cheapest similar Synology (model DS215j) is about 18 thousand. The advanced Synology (DS213) that I use is as much as 34 thousand at once. So the price for WD My Cloud EX2 seems to be quite adequate. I really liked the device. Simple, convenient and very intuitive admin panel, silent, but at the same time quite productive work, remote access, availability of all necessary services. For the money, this is a very good deal, in my opinion.
