You can make and receive calls as usual, regardless of whether your interlocutor has Wi-Fi Calling or not. These include the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. “In essence, this is the same high-speed Internet access, only to solve a different problem - providing voice calls where usual cellular due to a number of circumstances is difficult,” the head announced Samsung Mobile in the Russian Federation Arkady Graf. The Wi-Fi network in this case performs the function base station operator.

The solution allows the operator to increase network coverage by available Wi-Fi infrastructure and thereby improve the costs of network development.

“Moscow was chosen only as a starting region.” Thus, we have already managed to evaluate the success of the experience of our foreign colleagues, at the same time, MTS is among those more innovative companies in the world that were the first to provide similar service clients.

Mobile operator MTS is the first in Russian Federation started providing services voice communication based on Wi-Fi Calling technology, said MTS Vice President for Strategy and Marketing at the project presentation Vasil Latsanich.

  • Where has Wi-Fi Calling technology gone? Why do I see the name “Internet calls” on my bills?

    We are expanding and improving services for calls over the Internet. Due to the increase in the number of users, from December 2017 to January 2018, the functionality of the Wi-Fi Calling technology was transferred to new equipment in order to ensure greater fault tolerance, reliability and bandwidth, as well as for further improvement and development of call services.
    “Wi-Fi Calling” technology was included in an expanded set of services called “Internet calls”, so you saw the new name “Internet calls” in your bills. Terms of tariffs and provision of services remain the same.
    If for any reason you need to disable the Internet calls service, dial *111*6*01# on your mobile phone

    How to set up redirection?

    Subscribers with the Internet Calls service can set up call forwarding only through their personal account on the website ihelper.mts.ru or by calling contact center by number 0890. Setting up call forwarding through the smartphone menu is not available for subscribers with this service.

    How to set up your smartphone?

    • make sure that you have the “Internet calls” service in the list of connected services (for example, in the “Services” section of the “My MTS” application or in “ Personal account"on the MTS website). If the service is not connected, connect it: dial *111*6#, press the “Call” button;
    • register for available Wi-Fi networks;
    • make sure that an icon appears at the top of the screen indicating that calls via Wi-Fi are available (handset with Wi-Fi icon). To make a call or receive incoming call no more via Wi-Fi additional actions not required - all calls will automatically go through Wi-Fi.
  • My smartphone supports Wi-Fi Calling technology. Why doesn't the service work on my smartphone?

    The service only works on devices certified for sales in Russia. If you have this particular device and the service does not work, then:

    • make sure that you have the “Internet calls” service in the list of connected services (for example, in the “Services” section of the “My MTS” application or in the “Personal Account” on the MTS website). If the service is not connected, connect it: dial *111*6#, press the “Call” button. The service will not be activated if you previously had the “MTS Connect” service activated on your number (the “Internet calls” and “MTC Connect” services are mutually prohibitive, i.e. if one of the services is activated, the other cannot be connected to the number until shutdown first). If the “MTC Connect” service is activated on the number and you want to use the “Internet calls” service, then to disable the “MTC Connect” service, dial *111*6*00# on your smartphone. After making sure that the service is disabled, dial *111*6# to activate the “Internet calls” service;
    • make sure that the “Wi-Fi Calling” (or “Wi-Fi Calling”) function is enabled in your smartphone’s settings;
    • check that you are registered in a Wi-Fi network with Internet access;
    • make sure that an icon appears at the top of the screen indicating that calls via Wi-Fi are available (handset with a Wi-Fi icon);
    • Not every Wi-Fi network allows you to use Wi-Fi Calling technology. The operation of the service may be hindered by Wi-Fi network settings, for example, if the network administrator has set a ban on data encryption (IPSec).
    • On Samsung phones Dual SIM Wi-Fi Calling technology only works if the MTS SIM card is installed in the main slot. Sony smartphones support Wi-Fi Calling technology through any slot if an MTS SIM card is inserted and data transfer priority is enabled.
  • Yes, you receive and send SMS as usual. To do this, you do not need to leave the Wi-Fi Network, but your phone must be registered in mobile network 2G/3G/4G.
  • What should I do if the connection during a call via Wi-Fi is periodically interrupted, or the audibility is poor or one-sided?

    For correct operation voice services A Wi-Fi network requires a minimum delay time - Latency, also known as ping. A delay of more than 80-100 milliseconds has a negative impact on quality. You can find out the Wi-Fi network latency using the Speedtest application.
    Latency increases when Wi-Fi router exchanges a large amount of data (when watching online videos, running torrents, etc.) or several routers work nearby simultaneously on the same channel (for example, with neighbors).
    What can help:

    • disabling services that create an increased load - torrents, video, etc. - for the duration of the call.
    • switching the router to a free channel
  • How to make calls via the Internet?

    Now, when calling from a mobile phone to a landline phone, you must always indicate 8 - area code - landline phone number. For example, to call a Moscow city number, you should dial 8 (495) xx-xx-xx from your mobile phone. .

Last week, MTS began supporting Wi-Fi Calling technology. However, it only works on smartphones for now. Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. I now have the last one in my hands (good, bastard!), so it would be a sin not to try the technology in action.

It’s funny that a long time ago, when I was working as a PR person (it was 12 years ago), my client was promoting the so-called NGN, Next Generation Network communication technology. And one of the features there was seamless switching of the phone from a mobile network to Wi-Fi. Like, convenience, savings, everything. At the time it seemed fantastic, fortunately I had a mobile phone Sony Ericsson T630 or something like that. But years have passed, and the once fantastic technology began to work as usual after updating the firmware on the smartphone.

The characteristic handset with the Wi-Fi icon means Wi-Fi Calling is working

What's the point?

In fact, Wi-Fi Calling replaces femtocell. All operators have this trick: if the reception at home or in the office is bad, you buy a kind of surrogate base station for reasonable money (around 5 thousand rubles), connect it to your Internet and life improves dramatically. I once almost bought one from MegaFon, but the fear that my femtocell would make calls from half the house stopped me, and the speed home internet will sag “slightly”. In the case of Wi-Fi Calling, a femtocell is not needed. Enough to buy the right smartphone(for a ridiculous 50-60 thousand rubles, hehe), turn on the function in the menu - and away we go. Moreover, all this works, of course, not only at home, but also wherever there is Wi-Fi.

When the function is available, another characteristic one appears at the top, near the Wi-Fi icon. All calls using new technology are marked with the same icon. You don’t need to do anything, everything works without settings. You can prioritize mobile network or Wi-Fi.

At home I didn’t feel any difference, my MTS receives well. The difference appeared in the metro car - before, when I entered a tunnel, the connection was cut off, but now you can talk without problems, even if you can’t get a mobile network (there is a mobile network in the Moscow metro free wifi). In the editorial office we have a dead corner where the editor-in-chief dumps the corpses of deadline violators; MTS barely catches them. I have a habit (quite common) of walking back and forth during conversations, and I had to constantly shorten the route so as not to wander into a bad corner. And for three days now I’ve been walking wherever I want, because via Wi-Fi Calling the voice can be heard everywhere perfectly, just some kind of HD Voice.

All calls are charged at normal rates. That is, no freebies at home. The latter appears when traveling abroad: calls to Russia are at home rates (including as part of paid packages), and incoming calls are free. This celebration of life will last until November 17, 2017, and then we’ll see.

Yes, of course, S7/S7 edge are not the most common phones. And not everyone uses MTS. So it’s difficult to call a mass service yet. Maybe from the beginning of 2017 the number of compatible devices will increase, but it will still be something quite sophisticated and expensive.

But the technology exists, it really works and, I think, will become commonplace for all operators quite soon. Certainly faster than in 12 years.
