High DPI values in Windows OS. How to configure Windows for high-definition displays

In the latest versions of Windows 10, Microsoft has added new app fix capabilities to fix blur on high-resolution displays. Even if an application scales correctly right after opening, the font may become blurry upon subsequent interaction with it.

Starting in Windows 10, version 1803, you can enable a new feature that will automatically fix apps that have scaling issues and look blurry. At the time of this writing, the feature will not apply to all desktop applications, so some of them will have blurry text until you manually restart them.

In addition, the new feature improves the scaling of desktop applications when they are on the home screen. Let's see how to enable this feature to eliminate blur.

If you are experiencing blurry fonts in Windows 10 and you are not satisfied with the result of your DPI scaling, you should try the solutions provided in this article.

Method 1 Using the "Settings" application.

1. Open the app "Parameters".

2. Go to the section "System" → "Display" and click the link on the right.

3. On the zoom page, enable the Fix scaling.

If you have an app that is always blurry installed, open it and Windows 10 should show you a notification telling you that a blurry app has been detected and will be fixed. Let Windows 10 make fixes and check if the app is improved.

Another way, you can try decreasing DPI settings by 100%. Here's how to do it: On the same screen, there is a function "Custom scaling" which you can use to set a custom zoom level.

  1. Open the app Parameters by pressing the Win + I keyboard shortcut.
  2. Follow the following path - System → Display.
  3. Set the value in the dropdown menu. The value should be "100%" as below:

  1. Log out of Windows and log back in.

The scaling fix will be applied automatically for all supported applications. If the result is still not satisfactory to you, try the next solution.

Method 2 - Fix scaling for applications on the Compatibility tab.

Finally, the last method requires this option to be enabled using the compatibility tab in the application properties. This way, you can turn on automatic blurring of applications that are not detected by Windows as expected.

1. Right-click on the application executable file and select "Properties".

2. Click Change high DPI settings.

3. Enable the feature by checking the checkbox for Override System DPI.

4. Select "Appendix" or "System" in the dropdown below.

Everything! The app should now auto-scale at high resolution, thereby removing blur.

This feature was badly needed. Many popular apps suffer from blurry text and UI, and developers do little to update apps for HD displays.

Method 3 - Quickly enable scaling fix using notification.

Fix blur for apps when a notification is received. The notification appears when the system detects that there are applications on the home screen that have display problems.

Please do the following.

1. When you see this notification, press the button. "Yes fix the application".

2. The system will try to solve the problem automatically.

Method 4 - Eliminate blurry fonts in Windows 10 by changing the scaling method.

Windows 10 You can revert to the scaling method used for Windows 8 RTM and Windows 7. For many users, this provides much better results than the default.
To activate the old scaling method, follow these steps:

"ON_DPI.reg" file will enable scaling.

To undo your changes, run "Default_DPI.reg". Remember to restart your computer.

Method 5 - The problem of blurry fonts can be solved by using a free and simple tool for Windows 10 DPI Fix.

It looks like Microsoft has finally fixed blurry fonts for a lot of users.
But we still get emails from people who said the Creators update doesn't fix blurry fonts.
Therefore, if you still have blurry fonts after the update, you can use DPI Fix to make them clearer.

After starting the utility, you must select the parameter "Use Windows 8.1 DPI scaling", and press "Apply" all the problem of blurring fonts has already been resolved.

If you decide to use Windows 10 DPI Fix you must know:

  • The program must be at startup. Accordingly, it will run together with the OS. After adjusting the DPI, the utility will automatically close.
  • In Microsoft Edge Flash, elements appear slightly smaller.

More and more often on the forums you can read that the automatic image adjustment in Windows leads to visual discomfort - too small font makes it difficult to read, large shortcuts take up half of the screen, and messages in dialog boxes and other menu items do not fit in the space allotted to them. With a particularly extreme combination of settings, operation becomes generally impossible immediately after switching on. Fortunately, everything is quite easy to configure, and for each user separately.

Operating systems Windows Vista, 7 and 8 use automatic adjustment of image parameters by recording the EDID of the monitor and taking into account the video card driver. When loading, not only the "native" resolution is selected - the degree of scaling of text and graphic menu items also changes. This often turns out to be a disservice, but the problem is solved in a couple of minutes.

When developing the design of the OS and programs, the sizes of all elements of the user interface are selected taking into account the typical values of pixel density. Most monitors recently had 96 DPI. In modern matrices, this parameter is significantly different. For example, notebooks ASUS ZENBOOK Prime and Sony VAIO SVD with a screen diagonal of 11.6 ″ have a resolution of 1920 × 1080. Accordingly, the pixel line density is 190 DPI.

The opposite situation occurs when a modest resolution is used on an inadequately large screen for it. Monitors such as LG Flatron E1910, Acer V193 and the like are still on sale. A resolution of 1280x1024 with a 19 "diagonal and an aspect ratio of 4: 3 gives a low pixel density of 84 DPI.

You can choose the appropriate parameters yourself using the advanced image settings. They are located in the control panel in the "Appearance and personalization" section. The Display subsection opens directly to the Screen Reading Ease tab. By default, a simple choice of text scale is offered: small (100%), medium (125%) and large (150%). To adjust it more subtly, go to the last tab “Other font size” - there it will be possible to select it in the range from 100 to 500% in increments of 1% (the closest possible value will be selected).

When you select more than 200% on most screens, everything becomes so large that you often cannot even call this menu again. If you made a mistake and cannot correct it in the same way, call the setup menu directly. To do this, click "Start" and in the line "Find programs and files" enter "dpiscaling" (without quotes) and press (Enter). The same can be done through the "execute" command, invoked by pressing (Win) + (R).

The interface of some programs is limitedly compatible with the zoom mode. It's better for them to turn it off beforehand. This can be done selectively for specific programs. This primarily applies to CAD systems, browsers (while watching flash video) and most games. To do this, right-click on the shortcut and select "Properties" in the context menu that appears. Click the Compatibility tab and check the box for the last option, Disable high-resolution image scaling.

Please note that after updating the program version the flag of this option will be cleared.

The zoom function exists so that the PC user can examine in more detail one or another object or part of it. If the monitor has a large enough diagonal, the need for this function disappears.

You will need

  • - access to computer settings.

Instructions

  • To disable scaling in the game, change its resolution settings through the menu so that it matches the value of this parameter set in the desktop properties. Also, be careful to maintain the aspect ratio so that the image does not stretch when you start the game. This happens when the video card does not support the resolutions available in the game menu.
  • If the image is distorted, it is recommended to try to update the adapter driver or change the monitor resolution to the appropriate one, while black stripes will appear on its left and right edges (on the bottom and top in rare cases), which will be removed when the resolution settings are returned to the normal state for the device. Most often, such problems occur when running old games on laptops or computers with a widescreen monitor in the configuration (rarely - with a vertically elongated one, but there are also such models).
  • To disable scaling for applications on Windows, look for the shortcut to launch the custom program. To do this, open the properties of the desktop shortcut, which is usually used simply for launch functions, and click on the "Find Object" button.
  • After you find yourself in the folder with the installation files, select the properties of the file with the extension .exe, to which your shortcut referred. Open compatibility settings and go to options. Select "Disable high-resolution scaling" from the menu that opens. Apply and save your changes.
  • Change the resolution of your monitor to the optimal value, after disabling all available utilities in "Accessibility". Also sometimes zooming occurs when the onscreen keyboard is on.
  • How to fix blurry font in Windows 10 to make the image clear and easy to read? In Windows 10, compared to other operating systems, the problem with blurry images has become more common. The fact is that Microsoft changed the algorithm for smoothing and displaying images and text. All this was done for the sake of the constantly growing resolution of screens - Full HD, 2K, 4K screens - on each of them the display should be the same, depending on the scaling.

If you are faced with the problem that in Windows 10 the font is blurry only in applications and system utilities, first make sure that you have the current version of the system.

Previously, the problem arose due to automatic scaling settings, the system determined the size and resolution of the screen, and then set the desired scale. Along with the resolution of the desktop and interface elements, the font suffered, which was not optimized for the desired size. This applies to Windows 10 versions 1507, 1511 and 1607, to find out the version of your OS, run the command winver

or go Parameters - System - About the system (About the program) and find out your OS version.

Now that the Creators Update (1703) is out, Windows 10's blurry font scaling issues should be fixed. In the Fall Creators Update (1709), the scaling and anti-aliasing algorithm was slightly tweaked, so this problem may not be relevant for most users.

According to personal observations, after the release of version 1703, the number of calls to technical support with blurry font problems decreased several times. For that, read the separate article. For those who have this problem, the following tips should help.

How to remove blurry font on Windows 10

The main cause of blur was incorrect scaling. In order to change it and set the correct one, you need to go to Options - System

Then select Display and in item Scale and layout the item will be displayed Resizing text, attachments, and other elements.
Set the Scale to the recommended value and log out of the user account for the changes to take effect.

With standard screen sizes (HD, Full HD), scaling is redundant, with 2K and 4K screens, scaling can be enabled automatically, because all interface elements will be extremely small.

Also make sure you have the correct screen resolution. When setting an incorrect screen resolution (for example, a monitor with a resolution of 1920x1080, but set to 1280x1024), you may notice image distortion - blur, pixelization, uneven edges, etc.

The video adapter driver is responsible for correct display, as well as resolution and scaling. If this situation occurs after installation, system update, or crash, try updating your graphics card driver.

Open the device manager (right-click on the start button):

Open the Video adapters tab and select the required video card, right-click and select Update driver.

Or use an alternative method and download drivers from the manufacturer's website.

After all the updates, try to set the recommended scaling and screen resolution, in most cases, the problem will be solved.

    ClearType setting

There are times when, after cumulative updates in Windows 10, the font has become blurry, the reason may be resetting the ClearType settings - text anti-aliasing technology.
To re-configure it, open the search menu (Win + S), enter a ClearType query and select Customizing ClearType Text.

The Text Tuner opens, prompting you to turn on the ClearType feature and choose from the suggested text display options to calibrate the feature.

When finished, check the legibility of the text in applications using system fonts - the blur should pass.

    Blurry text in apps

It happens that in Windows 10, a blurry font is only in programs, in system applications everything is in order. In this case, scaling can also affect this; to enable / disable for a specific application, you need to follow these recommendations:

    • Right click on the application shortcut and open Properties
    • Go to the Compatibility tab
    • For versions 1507, 1511 or 1607, you need to check the box on Disable high-resolution image scaling
    • For Windows 10 versions 1703, 1709 and older, you need to check the box on Override High Resolution Scaling Mode and choose one of the modes Application, System or System (Advanced)

    Additionally

    Manual scaling

It can help with setting a convenient display of system elements, as well as fix the problem of blurry font. The setting is located in Options - System - Display - Custom scaling. You can set the scale in the range from 100% to 500%.

    Windows 10 DPI Fix

If none of the suggested options helped you, try using the Windows 10 DPI Fix utility.

Launch the program and select the desired scaling method: Old (Windows 8.1) or New (Windows 10), and set the percentage of the scale.

There are several features of this application:

    • Do not disable it from startup
    • In Edge browser, some elements of Adobe Flash Player may appear smaller than expected. In other browsers (Chrome, Yandex, IE, Opera or FireFox), the display is performed correctly.

If the proposed options did not help you, then write in the comments what problem you encountered, we will try to answer and help you.

    Have a great day!
