Believe it or not, Apple is working on a new modular Mac Pro. Mac Apple computer: specifications and reviews

When I was asked to write about the Mac Pro, I initially refused. Not because Apple's new miracle computer isn't interesting, not at all. It is simply not very correct to assess professional tools if you are not a professional of this kind yourself. Roughly speaking, if a student of the fifth grade of a music school is given a Stradivarius violin for classes, it is unlikely that he will be able to appreciate it and demonstrate all its advantages.

In response to the refusal, I heard that many thousands of people around the world were waiting for my evaluation of the Mac Pro. Coarse flattery is an effective tool of persuasion, and within a couple of days this perhaps the most unusual desktop computer in the world arrived at the editorial office of PC World.

I already wrote a little about him in a report from Apple's October press conference, where the Mac Pro was first shown live, without a glass cover. Nowadays, when stationary computers are of little interest to anyone, Apple has managed to attract serious attention to its brainchild, even against the backdrop of the new iPad and MacBook Pro. Indeed, it has never been so powerful, I would even say - an uncompromising computer was not so compact and quiet. Moreover, the exterior is matched, which has nothing to do with traditional system units.

But, as they say, there is a nuance. When we see the Pro next to the MacBook, we know it’s written for fun. In fact, not only a seasoned designer or video editor, but also a fan of posting pictures of food and cats on social networks can use such a laptop in full growth. The screen, the speed of work, a powerful battery, a comfortable keyboard - all this is good for solving absolutely any task. The Mac Pro, on the other hand, is really tailored for professionals working with complex 2D and 3D graphics, processing high-definition video, recording multi-channel audio, etc. etc. And a cat lover may not notice any difference at all, for example, with a Mac mini. That with at least a fivefold difference in price can cause conflicting emotions.

Official portrait

I'm just a Mac mini user. The older version of this wonderful little computer has been on my desk for about a year now and, despite the last generation processor, satisfies my household needs completely and completely. Typing, processing RAW files from the Sony DSC-RX100 camera, and occasionally editing video in Full HD. And, of course, fierce, indomitable Internet surfing. There was an idea to replace the classic hard drive with an SSD, but after increasing the amount of RAM from 4 to 6 GB, the slight slowdowns disappeared completely, and I decided to just wait for the new version on Haswell.

And here comes the Mac Pro. It is sold in a completely compact box that you can put in a branded bag and take home in your hands. Weight - about five kilograms, you will not get very tired. Inside we are suddenly greeted by ... pieces of foam. They, of course, are quite elegant against the background of brothers from under the boxes with TVs and monitors, but personally I have never come across foam in Apple packaging at all. Perhaps, to get in touch with such an exquisite device, it was worth using a cork, since the task of severe economy in this case was clearly not worth it. But - as it is. The box contains only the computer itself and the power cable. Everything else is offered to be purchased independently, based on your own needs and capabilities.

Six Thunderbolt connectors are, of course, very cool. But I personally would like more USB.

And you can buy a lot of things. Keyboard, mouse, trackpad - that's understandable. A decent speaker system (with or without wires), a monitor (up to three standard ones with a resolution of up to 4K, or as many as six using the Thunderbolt interface), external drives (USB or Thunderbolt, as you see fit) and so on and so on ... By the way, if you, like me, have a newfangled monitor with a resolution higher than Full HD, you won't need special expensive adapters to connect your Mac Pro to it, a regular HDMI cable is enough. Thanks to Apple for bringing HDMI 1.4 support.

I ordered a younger version of the Mac Pro for study, although even its characteristics are impressive. 4-core Intel Xeon E5 with a base frequency of 3.7 GHz (under load up to 3.9 GHz), 16 GB of RAM, two AMD FirePro D300 graphics cores with two gigabytes of GDDR5 VRAM on each analogs of the Radeon HD 7850). Only the size of the SSD (256 GB) hinted that this is a basic model. But with six Thunderbolt connectors, there's no problem plugging in an external drive and using it at the same speed as a regular internal HDD or SSD. I emphasize - just the usual, because your SSD in the Mac Pro is simply prohibitively fast, and something external cannot catch up with it. 900 megabytes read and write is no joke.

Mac Pro looks almost more impressive with the lid removed than with it. It's just some kind of engineering orgasm. Everything is not only thought out to the smallest detail, but also simply beautiful.

Even the textolite of memory modules - and that is the same!

Or they could have put an ordinary Hynix, like everyone else.

If the capabilities of the listed hardware are not enough for you, and there is still plenty of money, Apple offers many interesting opportunities to spend it. First, take a look at the second default Mac Pro configuration with a 6-core Xeon E5 and two AMD FirePro D500s (3GB VRAM per chip). Finally, for the most demanding and wealthy people, it is possible to create their own configuration with a 12-core Xeon E5, 64 GB of RAM, a terabyte SSD and two AMD FirePro D700s with 6 GB of GDDR5 video memory each. This does not change the size of the computer.

Impressive? Personally, me - right to shiver. Especially since the Mac Pro is virtually silent in operation. It burns well under load, so I would not recommend putting chocolates on it. But it doesn't make noise. For those who work a lot (just work, not just sit) at the computer, this is a very important argument in favor of the new Apple product. Because making a powerful system is not difficult, but making it behave unnoticed is still a task. And before, there was an opinion that in such a compact size it was simply unsolvable. It also uses one large turbine-type propeller, which is mounted on top and draws air through the entire housing. Probably, this imposes certain obligations on cleaning the table and the room as a whole. Because it is much easier and cheaper to extract dust from a vacuum cleaner bag than to extract it from the bowels of a Mac Pro. By the way, the system turns on with a sound reminiscent of the starting rattling of hard drive heads. A funny feeling.

Setting up a new Apple computer is traditionally simple - just connect to your home network and feed it a saved Time Machine image. In about an hour, the Mac Pro had all the settings and apps from the Mac mini. I sat down at him and began to do my usual things, listening to the sensations. Feelings were silent. There was no difference with the Mac mini at all. More precisely, the presence of an SSD significantly reduced the loading time, and applications opened more vigorously, but in general, the picture was exactly the same.

Launched Photoshop CC, began to apply my favorite effects to photos. And again he felt nothing. As it was all swiftly, it remained so. Those in the know advised me to open something 40 megapixel and create twenty layers. Then, they say, you will be imbued with. But my design career ended 14 years ago and most likely will not resume. Therefore, I did not experiment with layers. But I have no doubts about the performance of the Mac Pro.

Video processing in Final Cut Pro X uses not only the processor, but also the graphics cores. Therefore, it is impossible not to notice the acceleration here. It takes about four times less time to create a finished video than on a Mac mini with its mobile Core i7 and integrated Ivy Bridge graphics. But if in the case of Full HD we just have a pleasant acceleration of work, then when you switch to 4K resolution, the Mac Pro becomes the only really effective working tool in the current Apple clip. In the end, the difference between 10 minutes and half an hour is good, but not critical. But when you have a choice between half an hour and two hours ...

As for the advantages for editing high-quality sound, I confess that I do not understand anything at all, and if so, I will not even try to portray an expert. But the knowledgeable guys say it's a smart thing.

What's my takeaway from my Mac Pro experience?

If you are a very wealthy person and at the same time, continuous editing of video in 4K, mixing albums of domestic pop stars of the first echelon and lifting their bust after photo shoots for glossy magazines is not included in the range of tasks you solve on a computer, you should not buy a Mac Pro. If money burns your pocket, buy an iPad, iPhone, a couple of MacBook Pros, a Mac mini in every room of a country house and a 27-inch iMac in your office. Seriously, there will be a lot more sense. Because in typical home / office applications, the benefits of the Mac Pro cannot be felt. Even in games, it fights on equal terms with the 27-inch iMac of the new generation, especially if you are not greedy for the GPU of the latter (by the way, my Mac mini overtook the studied sample in the new Tomb Raider by as much as seven times). To put it simply, putting your Mac Pro at home is as logical and convenient as cutting bread with a medical scalpel. Someone will be impressed by your daring, but most will twirl a finger at their temples.

Mac Pro is a professional product. For those who shove through serious amounts of data every day, no matter what kind - graphic, multimedia or scientific. For them (more precisely, for those of them who feel free in the OS X environment) this computer will become an extremely useful acquisition and - as a bonus - a solid decoration of the desktop. Considering that there are simply no analogues on the market (I'm talking about a combination of performance and form factor), the price does not look too high.

When I was asked to write about the Mac Pro, I initially refused. Not because Apple's new miracle computer isn't interesting, not at all. Key features of Apple Mac Pro:

  • Intel Xeon E5 Processors based on 4 and 6 cores, clocked at 3.7 GHz and 3.5 GHz, respectively. Choose from Apple Mac Pro with Xeon E5 processor with 8 and 12 cores and up to 30MB L3 cache.
  • 4-channel DDR3 memory controller that supports up to 64GB of memory, ensuring the fastest execution of tasks. No delays, instant response and high working efficiency.
  • AMD FirePro GPUs D300 and D500 workstation level. Every Apple Mac Pro is equipped with two advanced processors with powerful graphics architecture. At the same time, each has from 2 to 6 GB of video memory, allowing you to work with video in Ultra HD format.
  • Expansion without borders With a wide range of built-in ports: Gigabit Ethernet, USB 3, HDMI 1.4 and Thunderbolt 2. You can build your own workstation that is fully customized to your goals and needs.
  • Flawless black case Made of polished aluminum just 25.1 cm high. The Apple Mac Pro is an amazingly compact and lightweight computer for its class, weighing less than 5 kg. The innovative design is a harmonious continuation of the interior architecture.
  • Single heat exchange circuit distributes heat evenly over the entire area for maximum airflow. A powerful fan mounted on the top of the case removes excess heat while operating efficiently and virtually silently.
  • The back of your Mac Pro contains all of the available connectors and controls. However, it is more accurate to say that there is only one “element”, the power button. There are a lot of connectors: a headphone output, an audio output combined with an optical output, four USB 3.0, six (!) Thunderbolt 2.0, two Gigabit RJ-45, HDMI 1.4 and a power connector. All this will be more than enough to work with modern peripherals. However, for Thunderbolt this still needs to be looked for.

Of course, the question arises: "why is everything in the back - after all, it will not be so convenient to insert the same flash drive!" There is some truth in this. But judge for yourself - the 2013 Mac Pro is 8 times smaller than previous models, and at the same time much more compact. It is not difficult to turn it with one hand. Moreover, it has a built-in motion sensor that detects rotation and automatically illuminates all connectors! So there is no need to keep the computer “in front of the forest, and with the wires sticking out to you”.

Technical components of the Apple Mac Pro 2013 and its disassembly

The new Mac Pro is catching attention not only for its extravagant looks. The "stuffing" of the computer has been seriously redesigned. As you know, Mac Pro 2009 was based on Lynnfield processors (Nehalem architecture). A year later, a Xeon version of the Westmere architecture was introduced. That is, the same Nehalem architecture was used, which switched to a new technical process. Plus, the processors have got six full cores. A year later, but already in the Mac Pro 2012, which is interesting, all the same processors based on the Westmere architecture were used. From generation to generation, the "stones" grew only the clock frequency. At the same time, the X58 Express chipset did not have native support for USB 3.0 and SATA 3.0.

As part of the Mac Pro 2012, a discrete graphics card of the level of Radeon HD 5770 or Radeon HD 5870 could be used. The high level of performance was maintained due to the ability to install two processors in the motherboard at once (12 Westmere cores are still a very productive solution). If we take into account the performance of one core and the small computational capabilities of the video, then they are no longer enough. In this plane, both the iMac and the MacBook Pro can compete with the Mac Pro 2012.

Apple understood this, so they undertook a major overhaul of the technical component of their new desktop. First, it was decided to abandon the use of multiple central processing units. The "apple" company decided to turn to the services of "stones" Intel Xeon architecture Ivy Bridge-E. Secondly, with the development of parallel GPGPU computing, two FirePro GPUs from AMD were integrated into the desktop at once. Finally, it was decided to ditch the use of mechanical hard drives in favor of an ultra-fast SSD.

However, let's take a closer look at all the technical features of the new Mac Pro.

    Specifications

As always, Mac Pro is a kind of constructor. There are two basic configurations, which can always be supplemented based on the wishes of the buyer. The cost of a desktop can vary from 125,000 rubles to 417,000 rubles. That is, the most powerful version of the "firmware" - with a 12-core Xeon, a couple of FirePro D700 and a 1 TB SSD - will cost the same as the "zero" SKODA Fabia.

With Apple growing in popularity, many are looking to test how easy a Mac is to use.

If you decide on such a purchase, but do not know where to start, do not despair. The main thing is to immediately determine for yourself whether you want a portable laptop or

    General information about MacBooks

Consider whether you will carry your Mac with you anytime, anywhere, or just enough to keep it quietly waiting for you back in your bedroom or office? This will make the choice immediately obvious.

However, Apple laptops have the function of connecting to an external monitor, keyboard, mouse, and even a hard drive. And in such a simple way, a laptop turns into a system unit of a stationary PC. Yes, and you will have two work screens.

Of course, the models of MacBooks are all different and it is difficult to decide, but you should know that they all have common features:

    1. Thanks to Intel, they are equipped with powerful processors and 4GB of RAM or more. This is enough for you both for working with documents and using the Internet, and for playing music, movies, games and more.
    2. You can connect an additional screen or even a TV to any of them; there is also Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. What's more, every one of them, apart from the Mac mini and Mac Pro, has a built-in webcam.

    What are the varieties?

Now that you have already decided to become a MacBook user, you should figure out what types of Mac computers are:

    • MacBook Air is a convenient version of laptops with many features. Key Features: Full-size keyboard yet lightweight. If you travel often, but want to always have a powerful device with you, then it will perfectly cope with this task. However, there is no discrete graphics card here.
    • The MacBookPro is Apple's most powerful high-resolution computer yet. It is also here and therefore it is often chosen by gamers and designers.

    • Mac mini is a small, low-power system unit at an affordable price. If you are not ready to spend a lot on a computer, but want to evaluate the performance of Apple, then this option is for you.
    • iMac is the perfect model for stationary use at home or in the office. Exquisite design with built-in display and incredible power will impress you.
    • The Mac Pro is the most expensive stationary model, but it justifies the price. Such computers are powerful and will serve you faithfully for many years, there are no impossible tasks for them.

These short descriptions will give you a general idea of what each Mac is. The photos, given a little further, will also show their external data.

Why is Mac better than Windows?

I think all newbies have a similar question, so let's break it down in more detail:

    • Apple manufactures both the devices themselves and the software. It is more convenient for the user to go to one service center, knowing that they will probably have his Mac computer repaired there. And it is more convenient for the manufacturer to do the repair, and not look for which program of unknown authorship could disrupt the operation of the device.
    • Laptops are able to work autonomously for a long time without turning on the energy-saving mode, and the stationary one will help to save on the light bill. This is because OS X uses a lot less power.

    • You never know what kind of work you will get, and sometimes you have to work with software from different manufacturers. The program allows you to work with your favorite Windows or Linux applications.
    • Initially, Apple products seem more expensive, but this is only at first glance. With OS X, you don't need to install a whole list of additional software packages and patches to get comfortable working on your computer, because everything is installed by default.
    • No questionable interface experiments. While Windows is cheating with a tiled design, Apple decided not to confuse the concepts of a tablet and a computer, so the Mac interface is clear and simple for the user.
    • Most OS X updates are installed without the need for a reboot, and if necessary, they will ask and wait for a convenient time for you.
    • Antiviruses will no longer be needed, since all the software is provided by the manufacturer and in case of problems they themselves will have problems.
    • Image quality, sound quality, performance, size and simply attractive appearance are all factors that affect the price. If all these points are necessary for you to use your computer comfortably, then paying for them shouldn't seem like overkill.

    • One system for all devices. All Apple devices interact easily and quickly with each other and many use them for this very reason.

How do I secure my Mac?

There are a few basic steps that every conscious user takes when setting up a Mac computer. And they protect their devices as follows:

    • First, you need to disable the guest account, and put a password on the personal one. Thus, no one can use this Mac without you, but if it is stolen, iCloud will also not be able to track it. To disable login for guests, go to "System Preferences" and then to "Users and Groups". You can also set a password there.
    • All in the same "System settings", but already in the "Security" section, you can set the frequency of the password request. Try to put even the input every time you turn on from sleep mode.
    • In the same Security section, you can turn on the FileVault feature, which will encrypt data on your Mac. Thus, the Apple computer will prevent intruders from gaining access to it.
    • Activate the "Firewall" function together with "Invisible Mode". Thus, one more protection against attacks from the Internet will appear. You only need to enter your password after that every time you log in.

Apple Mac Pro for true professionals

Laptops of this model come with 13- and 15-inch screens and can easily replace a regular desktop computer. They are lightweight due to a thin body, and the brightness and image quality on the screen are provided by Retina technology. They are capable of working without being connected to an energy source for up to 8-9 hours.

The desktop computer Apple Mac Pro, in turn, is the most powerful of the company's products. Has a 4 or 6 core Intel Xeon E5 process, 2 AMD FirePro D500 or D300 GPUs. The video memory is up to 6 GB, the SSD is 236 GB, and the RAM is 12-16 GB. With all these parameters, it also looks extremely elegant and sophisticated.

Apple Mac Mini for lovers of compactness

However, the Apple Mac Mini has an i5 or even more powerful Core i7 along with Intel's Graphics 4000 graphics card. The RAM can be 4, 8 or 16 GB, and one or two 256 GB SSDs. It is capable of connecting to the Internet via Wi-Fi or AirPort, and also has Ethernet and Bluetooth connectivity. Unfortunately, due to the small size of the drive, it does not have, but via USB you can connect Apple SuperDrive, which is purchased separately.

Everything is included with the iMac!

This type of desktop computer is either a 21.5 or 27-inch monitor with an internal system unit. It features a quad-core processor, a built-in FaceTime HD webcam, and Thunderbolt ports. It comes with either a Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad. Also, you will not have to spend extra money on speakers with such a purchase, the computer has built-in speakers with high-quality sound almost without distortion. According to user reviews, this particular model is the most popular.

Weightless MacBook Air is only a pen

It is thanks to the lightness of the case that this laptop got its name. A computer with an 11-inch screen weighs 1.08 kg, and 1.35 kg with a 13-inch screen. For all its charms - a rugged case, multi-touch technology, SSD storage and a powerful battery - these laptops are not only powerful, but also lightweight. It is equipped with a 5000 video card with built-in video processing module for clear and high-quality playback and even for calls via a FaceTime HD camera.

Wi-Fi is also built into laptops and along with Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 outputs. What's more, there are connectors for MagSafe 2 power, headphone and SDXC card.
