You can use one of the following methods to turn WiFi radio on or off:

  • A hardware radio switch on your computer
  • Intel® PROSet / Wireless WiFi Connection Utility
  • Microsoft Windows

NOTE... When you turn on your computer, the radio transmitter constantly transmits signals. Use the following methods to turn off the radio and use your laptop without transmitting radio signals.

Using an optional hardware radio switch

If your computer has a hardware radio switch, you can use it to quickly turn the radio on or off. See your computer's manual for more information on this switch. The state of the hardware radio switch (on or off) is displayed in the main window of the WiFi connection utility and in the taskbar. Also keep in mind that if you turn off the WiFi radio using the hardware switch, you must turn it back on to restore WiFi radio to work.

Using the Intel® PROSet / Wireless WiFi Connection Utility

The WiFi radio can be turned on or off in the main window of the Intel® PROSet / Wireless WiFi Connection Utility. The status icon in the main program window displays the current status of radio traffic. In the main window, click Incl. WiFi or Off WiFi to turn the radio on or off.

Turn radio on or off in the taskbar

Right-click the icon in the taskbar and select Incl. WiFi or Off WiFi.

Using Windows to turn radio on or off

WiFi radio can be turned on or off using Windows.

NOTE... If you disable radio from Microsoft Windows, you must also use Microsoft Windows to enable radio later. It is not possible to use a hardware switch or the WiFi connection utility to turn on the radio in this case.

Windows * XP

  1. From the start menu select Connection... Right click Wireless network connection and select Disable.
  2. If you have multiple WiFi adapters, then from the start menu, click Connection > Show all connections... Right-click the adapter you want to disable and select Disable.

The same steps can be used to turn on the radio.

What could be easier than connecting to a WiFi wireless network? It is enough to enter the password and wait for the connection to be established. This usually happens, but what if the connection is limited (no Internet access) or the connection is not established at all? Let's talk about the reasons due to which such failures occur, and how to deal with them.

Why Windows 8 doesn't see or connect to WiFi networks

A computer or laptop running Windows 8 does not see the Wi-Fi network for the following reasons:

  • WiFi adapter is not installed, disabled, or defective;
  • the system does not have a wireless driver;
  • the computer is in airplane mode;
  • there are no wireless access points in your area;
  • an access point (wireless router) that is nearby is disabled, incorrectly configured, or malfunctioning;
  • communication standards of the computer and the access point are not mutually supported;
  • there is a device nearby that is interfering with the radio signal;
  • WiFi adapter is in monitoring mode.

If the network is visible, but the connection is not created or is limited:

  • Internet access for this network is not configured or denied;
  • network connection is limited by the administrator;
  • the access point cannot process the request due to congestion;
  • the wrong access point settings are being used.

Restoring the connection to the wireless network

Checking the network adapter

Desktop PCs do not ship with WiFi network adapters, so you have to buy and install an adapter separately to connect to wireless networks. For example, such as in the picture.

You don't need to buy a Wi-Fi adapter for a laptop - it is already inside.

WiFi must be turned on for the laptop to see and connect to wireless networks. On some models, a switch or button on the case is provided for this.

Others use the Fn + F1… F12 keyboard shortcut. The key with the antenna image is responsible for turning on the wireless adapter.

Once enabled, the WiFi adapter should appear in the Windows 8 Device Manager. To check this, launch the manager from the Windows (Start) button context menu

and expand the list "Network adapters". If your adapter is on this list, then the system recognized and installed it. If it appears as an unknown device, go to the website of its manufacturer and install the driver.

If the adapter is plugged in, but the system does not see it, make sure it is enabled in the BIOS.

The option that is responsible for the built-in WiFi is called OnBoard Wireless LAN or WireLess LAN support... Its value should be “Enabled”.

Among other things, make sure the wireless adapter is not in monitor mode. Although those who use this mode are always aware of this (it requires the installation of a special driver).

Checking the access point

If your PC or laptop does not see your home hotspot, try connecting to a different one. To check, you can use public networks, for example, in cafes or in parks, or private - at your friends'. To check your desktop computer without leaving home, you can temporarily create a virtual access point on another device.

If wireless networks are not detected anywhere - problems should be looked for in the adapter or WiFi settings on the computer, and if there is no connection to only one access point - the problem is probably in it.

Diagnostic steps (if the previous step did not solve the problem, proceed to the next one):

  • Make sure the access point is turned on and transmitting a signal (identified by the glowing wireless indicator).

  • Make sure there are no electromagnetic interference devices near the router and computer, such as cordless phones, microwave ovens, or high-power power cables. Try moving the access point closer to your PC to increase the signal strength.
  • Power off and back on the router. If the problems persist, reset the settings: with a sharp object - a toothpick or paper clip, press the recessed Reset button, which is located on the back or bottom of the device. After this manipulation, all settings will be restored to the state as after purchase.

  • Change the broadcast frequency channel. Connect the computer to the access point via a cable, enter the wireless settings menu, find the option " Channel»And switch to another channel. Perhaps, on some of them the connection will be restored.

  • In the same menu, check the "Hide SSID" setting and, if it is active, mark "No". Hiding the SSID disables broadcasting of the network name - such a network is not displayed in the lists of available connections. Also enable support for wireless communication standards b / g in case the Wi-Fi adapter on your computer works on one of them, and the access point works on another, for example, “a”, which “b” and “g” do not support.

  • If there are many devices connected to the access point at the same time, it may become unresponsive due to overload. At home, these situations are unlikely, but they often happen in organizations. Try to connect to a different, less congested network, or try again after a while.

Checking Windows 8 settings

Airplane mode

WiFi may disappear due to the fact that the user has activated the "Airplane" mode in Windows 8 - in this mode, the network adapter is turned off and the computer does not see any wireless networks. The network icon in the system tray will help to determine that the problems really arose because of this - it takes the form of an airplane.

To exit Airplane mode in Windows 8, open the pop-up Charms bar and click the Settings charm.

Next, click "Change computer settings."

Make sure that Windows can see WiFi again, and the network icon in the tray has returned to its previous appearance.

Network diagnostics

Windows 8 has a tool that automatically diagnoses network connectivity problems. It's called Windows Network Diagnostics. This tool sees and removes many obstacles for WiFi operation, for example, when there is a connection, but the computer does not access the Internet (connection is limited) or the Internet is there, but access to sites is limited.

When the connection is restricted, the network icon in the tray is marked with an exclamation mark.

To launch the Windows 8 Network Diagnostic Tool, right-click on the network icon and select Diagnose Problems from the menu.

The utility will check all network connections on your computer and determine what is restricting Internet access. Local problems that can be corrected will be fixed automatically. And if the connection cannot be restored, for example, due to problems with the access point or problems on the provider's side, the information will be displayed in a window marked “Not fixed”.

If there are several connections on the PC, of which only one is limited, or the diagnostic tool does not see a problem, only the selected network can be diagnosed. To do this, go to the "Network and Sharing Center" and go to the "Network Connections" folder (click "Change adapter settings" in the navigation bar).

Open the context menu of the connection that is limited and click "Diagnostics".

WLAN autoconfiguration service

Connectivity problems also occur after unintentionally or unintentionally stopping network services. The WLAN auto-configuration service is responsible for the operation of WiFi in Windows 8. If the wired Ethernet connection is not limited by anything, and the system simply does not see the wireless networks, start testing with this service.

  • Start the Services application: open the shortcut menu of the Windows (Start) button and click Run.

  • Next, type in the "Open" line the command services.msc and click OK.

  • Find WLAN Autoconfiguration in the list of Windows 8 services, open its menu and select Properties.

  • If the service is stopped, click "Start" and select "Automatic" from the "Startup type" drop-down list.

For the WLAN Auto Config service to start, another service, Windows Connection Manager, must be running. Find it in the same list and set similar settings to it.

The rest of the parameters of WiFi connections on a PC do not require manual configuration. All data for access to the Internet - IP, gateway address, DNS, etc., the network receives automatically from the DHCP server of the access point.

Due to the portability and stylish design, as well as good functionality, laptops and netbooks have become very popular. Nowadays, every modern person uses the Internet. Thanks to Wi-Fi technology, taking a beech with you to a bar or cafe, you can communicate with friends and work colleagues, check mail, read news on the Internet and much more.

Many laptop users are interested in the question, how to turn on WiFi on a laptop. As a rule, in order to turn on Wi-Fi, you need to perform a couple of simple operations.

Quickly turn on wifi on a laptop

The combination of keys pressed depends on the specific laptop model. Here are several options for starting a wifi network on popular models.

  • On Samsung laptops, to turn on wifi, you need to press the Fn and F12 or F9 buttons for a couple of seconds, depending on the model.
  • On Aser laptops, turn on by holding the Fn + F3 button
  • To enable on Asus, you must press Fn + F2
  • On Lenovo, turn on wi-fi, you need to hold down Fn + F5. But there are models where for this there is a separate switch with a wireless network pattern.

Different laptop models from different manufacturers use their own keyboard shortcut to turn on wi-fi. For more details on the startup scheme, see the laptop user manual. All modern laptops have an Fn key. If there is no such button, then there is a separate switch or button to start wifi. And it looks like this:

Turn on wi-fi with the desired key combination or a separate button, but it does not work? This means you need to configure wifi on your laptop.

Checking Wi-Fi drivers

Let's start with the main one, check the version and the presence of installed drivers. This is necessary in order to make sure that the necessary drivers are present and whether they are included. On the desktop, select the icon<<компьютер>> and select the item<<свойства>>. Then, in the left column, select<<диспетчер устройств>>.

In the window that opens, we find the line network adapters. This line should contain our wifi adapter and signed as a wireless network adapter.

If there is no such line or there is an icon with an exclamation mark on a yellow background, then the driver is either not installed or does not work correctly. We solve the problem by installing them from the disk that came with the laptop. If there is no such disk, then you will have to look for them on the laptop manufacturer's website.

Turn on the Wi-Fi adapter

We sorted out the drivers by installing the necessary ones for our laptop model. Now you need to start wifi. To do this, we do the following: Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings. We choose Wireless network connection right-click on it and select the Enable item from the menu.

If everything was done correctly and wi-fi was turned on, then on the desktop you will see this icon.

Click on the icon, a menu with available wireless networks will appear, in which yours should also be.

After you click on the name of your network and click Connect, this window will appear, in which you must enter the security key - the password from your network. If it is not protected by a password, then the connection will occur automatically.

The presence of Wi-Fi makes it possible to use the Internet in a variety of places. But before you can, comfortably sitting in a cafe or on a park bench, plunge into the world of the Internet, you need to deal with your laptop and find how and where to turn on the network on your laptop.

How do I enable wireless on my laptop?

There is nothing difficult about turning on the wireless connection on a laptop. You just need to know the function keys to enable wireless communication on a laptop of their own brand, because each manufacturer plays up the key combinations in their own way. For those who are trying to understand:

  • how to enable wireless communication on an Asus laptop, you just need to press Fn and F2;
  • the wireless button on an HP laptop is a combination of Fn and F12 or a touch button with an antenna pattern in those models where it is available;
  • on Lenovo, press Fn and F5 or a special switch, which is indicated in the instructions;
  • Acer and Packard Bell turn on the net by combining Fn and F3;
  • on different Samsung models it is either Fn and F9 or Fn and F12.

If the standard combinations are not suitable (in new models another may be introduced), then attention should be paid to the instructions from the manufacturer, which must indicate all the necessary information related to the functionality of the laptop. In any case, it should be the Fn button, and in its absence, a special button with an antenna pattern or a switch is pressed.

Turn on wireless on your laptop in other ways

If the switch is not marked on the keyboard, it can be moved to the side panel or the bottom of the laptop. The buttons located on the bottom are made invisible, so you need to take special care to find them there. If neither the combination nor the switch could turn on the wireless network, then, most likely, the wi-fi is simply not configured, and it's time to do it.

How do I turn on the wireless adapter?

Any setup begins with checking for the presence of the necessary drivers, which are connected, if any, but not connected, and are first downloaded and installed, and then connected if they are not in the laptop. You can check the drivers through the "Control Panel", menu item "Device Manager". If this subsection is not immediately visible, then perhaps it is in the "Hardware and Sound" section.

From the "Dispatcher" you need to go to the "Network Adapters" and find the Wireless section there, which is the right one. It may be that there is no inscription, or it is marked with an exclamation mark. This is a direct indication of driver problems that will need to be installed first. They must be present on the disc that came with the laptop. If the disc is lost or, for some reason, the installation fails, you can look for them on the manufacturer's website.

If there are drivers, but are marked with an exclamation mark, then you need to right-click on this icon and select the appropriate item in the menu that appears. This is usually the phrase "Engage." It may be necessary to enable it additionally if the adapter is connected to the power saving mode.

You can eliminate the saving factor in the Windows 7 menu in the "Properties" section, where there should be a subsection "Power management". It has a check mark on the item "Allow shutdown to save".

After unchecking the box, the drivers will work, and the connection can be made by standard keystrokes. If the above manipulations do not bring results, the laptop must be shown to a specialist - it may be damaged.

The wireless network adapter is disabled what to do. Wi-Fi does not work on a laptop - TOP reasons.

When a user purchases a laptop, of course he wants to use all the possibilities that it provides. The topic of today's article, How to turn on WiFi on a laptop in Windows 7 or 8, I did not choose for nothing. It would seem that there is nothing complicated here, but if you do not know some of the nuances, then this procedure will not seem so trivial.

Problems can arise and, fortunately, they are quickly and easily resolved, you just need to know exactly how. Just in this article, we'll talk about some of the pitfalls that can arise when you turn on Wi Fi.

Is there wifi at all

The first thing we need to do is find out if your computer or laptop has Wi-Fi. Modern laptop computers, laptops, netbooks, telephones and other devices have Wi FI. You can check if your device has one in Google, but I can assure you right away that if you purchased it a long time ago, then the built-in receiver simply may not be there.

Go to the Start menu, right-click on Computer and select Properties.

In the window that opens, click on the left "Device Manager".

From here you can see: what components in the laptop can be controlled - activate or deactivate the required device. We find the one whose name contains the word Wireless... Click on it with the right mouse button and select the "Engage" item.

By the way, if there is a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark next to the service icon, this means that the driver for this device is not installed on the laptop. In this situation, use another device (computer, laptop, netbook, tablet, etc.) through which you download the drivers for Wi-Fi, transfer to the laptop and install them.

Other nuances of turning on Wi-Fi

Above, I described in detail how to turn on WiFi on a laptop. But so that you see the full picture of how to turn on and how to connect to Wi-Fi, strongly follow the link further, since in this article I am talking about other nuances that may arise in your case. The article "" was written on a "live" example, so it will be extremely useful for you.

If you are not familiar with installing drivers, then we read: "". To find the driver, go to the official website of the manufacturer of your laptop, enter the model in the search for the site. Then look for a driver for Wireless in the list.

I do not exclude that users who are reading this article do not know the Wi-Fi password. If you do not know him, then you will not be able to enter the protected network. To find out how to view the password for Wi-Fi, I recommend reading: "". I also assume that some will ask about hacking, yes, you can hack, but I will not write about it.

Situations are different and there is no need to exclude the possibility that none of the above tips will help you. What to do then? Luckily for you, there is third-party software that you can safely use. Its meaning is that after installation, this program will automatically turn on every time Windows starts and when you press a certain key combination, it will perform certain actions. For example, turn on Bluetooth or WiFi.

There are a huge number of such utilities, I can cite SoftSwitch as an example. In addition to the above functions, it also knows how to turn on the camera and TouchScreen. For each of these functions, there is a certain combination of keyboard buttons, which you can familiarize yourself with if you decide to download this creation of programmers. Finding this program on Google will not be difficult for you, since it is licensed Free Soft (free license). Download it, install it and enjoy!

And I have, perhaps, everything on this issue. Thanks for reading and I sincerely hope I helped you.

For clarity, watch the video:

WiFi broadband wireless technology has become an integral part of people's lives. It allows you to quickly solve routine tasks. That is why the question of why WiFi does not work on a laptop is very important. Immediately, I would like to note that there are a lot of reasons why WiFi may not work on a laptop, and this article is not a panacea. However, in it you will find a solution to the most common problems, without calling a specialist.

Before blaming the laptop, you should check the access point itself, since it is the router that can be the reason for the inoperability of the wireless network.

First of all, you need to make sure that it is turned on and other devices, for example, a smartphone, tablet or other laptop, can connect to it. If everything is fine with the router, then move on.

Why WiFi Doesn't Work: Video

Checking and Installing the Network Adapter Driver

In the case when the router is turned on, the network works, but WiFi still does not turn on on the laptop, you need to check the driver for the wireless adapter and network card. This can be done in the device manager. You can open it as follows. We find the shortcut "My Computer" (on the desktop, in the "Start" menu, or in the file manager) and click on it with the right mouse button. We select "Properties". Next, in the left pane you need to find "Device Manager" and open it.

In the menu that appears, all the devices on the laptop are displayed, even if the driver is not installed on them. In this case, they will be marked with an exclamation mark. We are interested in the "Network adapters" section. Open it with a double click and see if there is a device with an exclamation mark.

If there is one, then click on it with the right mouse button and select "Delete". We confirm the action. After that, if you have a driver disc, insert it into the drive and install the necessary software. If there is no such disk, then you will need to go to the official website of the laptop manufacturer and download the necessary software for your model.

It is possible that the driver for the network equipment was previously installed, but at some point it stopped working. Why could this happen? The most common cause is a virus attack. It can also be the result of improperly turning off the device, for example, by long pressing the power button. Sometimes such consequences occur after freezes or hardware errors.

After installing the drivers, we again check the ability to connect to the wireless network. It should be noted that the above steps are performed regardless of the operating system version.

Reinstalling WiFi Driver on Windows: Video

Drivers for the keyboard

The network module drivers are ok, but the wifi adapter does not turn on, what should I do? Here you need to understand what is done with the keyboard. As a rule, this is the Fn key combination + the WiFi enable button (marked with the corresponding icon). If the adapter does not turn on when you press these keys, then you should install the driver on the keyboard.

There are cases when the driver is installed, most of the additional keys work, but you still can't turn on the wireless adapter. In this case, it is recommended to install a special utility to control the WiFi module. You can download it from the same source as the software.

Checking Wireless Status

Related Articles

If everything is in order with the drivers, but WiFi still does not work, then you should check the status of the network connection. To do this, open the network and shared access control panel by clicking on the network icon in the tray with the right mouse button, and enter the "Change adapter settings" item. Here we find the shortcut to the wireless network (depending on the version of Windows, the name may differ).

If the label is gray, it means that the connection is disconnected. You can enable it by right-clicking on the connection and selecting "Enable". The computer will then automatically search for available networks.

Alternatively, you can click Diagnostics. Thus, the system will automatically start troubleshooting and fixing the network adapters. It should be noted that this procedure can be performed several times in a row, as it can help from the second or even third time.

What to do if Wi-Fi does not work on a laptop: Video

A few more reasons why the WiFi adapter may not work

The above are the main reasons why the wireless adapter may fail. Now you know what to do first if WiFi is not working on your laptop. However, it is worth noting that all these are software reasons, which can be eliminated by simply installing new drivers, utilities, as well as performing certain operations in Windows.

Hardware errors are sometimes encountered. What does this mean. Hardware glitches happen directly to the board itself. In other words, it is physical damage to the network card. To fix such problems, you will have to disassemble the laptop. It is worth noting that some models are very easy to disassemble, however, there are also those that are quite difficult to disassemble on their own. It should be warned that it is not recommended to disassemble the laptop without certain knowledge in this area.

But still, in this article we will look at what physical damage can be. For example, if the device was being repaired or you disassembled it yourself to clean the cooling system, it is possible that the antenna wires are not connected to the WiFi adapter. You can simply forget about them corny. In this case, the adapter works, but does not pick up the signal, even when it is close to the source. The problem is eliminated by simply connecting the antenna.

Also, the answer to the question why the wi-fi module does not work is the banal overheating of the card and its failure. This can happen when the laptop is used in bed or on soft surfaces. The fact is that on the bottom cover of the device there are special holes through which cold air enters the system, cooling the boards.

It is not hard to guess what will happen if these holes are blocked for a long time. Another reason for overheating can be commonplace dust, which is drawn in by the fan and settles inside the laptop on absolutely all modules and elements of the laptop. For this reason, it is recommended to clean the device from dust at least once a year. Such cleaning will cost several times cheaper than repair.

If the WiFi adapter burns out, it cannot be repaired. It only remains to replace it. You can check this in the device manager, since when burned, this or that element is no longer displayed. In addition, if the module is displayed, but does not work, here you can see an error due to which it does not work. This, in turn, will allow you to find a solution to the problem.

Above, we have analyzed the most common reasons why the Wi-Fi adapter does not work. They can be solved on their own, without the help of specialists. However, if, after trying all these methods, you still cannot eliminate the cause of the problem, then it is recommended to contact the service center.

The router is not distributing wifi: Video

WiFi is a unique wireless technology that is incredibly popular around the world. Nowadays there are very few people who prefer regular wired Internet. Connecting and configuring Wi-Fi is not a big deal. But even in such a perfect system, sometimes errors occur, due to which the wi-fi stops working. The most common is a problem with connecting a Wi-Fi router.

Some people are faced with such a situation when the router is plugged into the network and works, but does not distribute: the computer cannot "see" the available network. Why does this happen? There may be several reasons for the occurrence:

lack of installed network drivers;

hardware type errors;

arbitrary disconnection of the connection with the computer - it is obvious why, in this case, the device does not work as it should;

malfunction of the wi-fi module;

malfunction of the wi-fi router.

There are other problems, but the ones listed above are the most common reasons why the device does not work. Therefore, we will focus on them.

Problem with drivers for network devices

The WiFi module driver is tested in the "Device Manager". This section is on the Start menu. You can also get to the section through the shortcut "My Computer" by clicking the right mouse button.

In the "Manager" you can see all the devices connected to the computer. We will be interested in network equipment. You need to switch to the branch with. If the branch is missing, it means that the drivers for the wifi adapter were not installed on the computer.

If there is a branch, the "!" Sign may be lit on one of the network devices. This means either the absence or malfunctioning of one of the drivers. Each of the problems can be easily resolved with a simple software reinstallation. Typically, the software is located on a disk attached to your computer. The wifi adapter for Device Manager may be called Wireless Network Adapter. Also, everything you need can be downloaded from the Internet using a mobile connection (if another is not available at the moment).

How to check the status of the wireless connection

If everything is in order with the drivers, then the next step is to check the wireless connection. It can simply be disabled. Testing is done differently on different operating systems. But it all comes down to one thing: you need to get into the "Network Control Center".

There is a universal way. You need to press Win + R, after which a window with a line will appear. In the line you need to type the command control panel and press Enter. This will open the "Control Panel". Here we go to "Network and Internet", then to the "Network and Sharing Center". In the "Center" we will be interested in the section "Change adapter parameters" located on the left. Clicking there will allow you to see the status of all connections that are on the computer.

“Wireless connection” is what will be important to us. If the label is not colored, but gray, it means that there is no signal. You can start the connection by double-clicking the left mouse button. After starting, the computer starts looking for all available connections.

If they do not appear, then you can try to perform system diagnostics. It is carried out through the "Network Control Center" and the item "Change adapter settings". Right-click on the "Wireless Connection" shortcut. In the window that opens, click the "Diagnostics" field. The computer performs the test on its own. Based on the result of the check, the user receives advice on further actions.

What to do if a hardware error occurs

A hardware error would indicate a problem directly inside the network card. In a word, if the computer does not see the adapter for connecting to wifi, this means that this wifi device is not functioning. There are two main reasons:

the device is broken;

there was a problem with the wifi drivers.

The second option has already been described by us. However, if there are Wi-Fi drivers, and the computer continues to not see the adapter, this means a breakdown. Burning of the device is one of the most common causes of breakdown.

Burnout can be caused by overheating if the computer has been operating at its maximum capacity for a long time. If we are dealing with a laptop, then this happens even more often, since many users forget the device on a soft surface that blocks access to the hole through which air flows for cooling. This problem is solved by simply replacing components with similar ones.

It should be borne in mind that the lack of experience in independent manipulation of computers can lead to even more disastrous consequences. Moreover, this applies to laptops that have a more complex design. The best way out is to contact a service center, where they will precisely determine the reason why the device does not work.
Hardware connection errors also include a disconnected antenna. Most often, this problem occurs in laptops or stationary computers that have been cleaned or repaired in some way. The specialist who performed the procedure could simply forget to connect the device, or he connected it incorrectly. This makes it impossible for the normal functioning of the adapter, which does not work normally and cannot normally catch the signal sent by the router, even being near the source.

A rather rare case is the clogging of the antenna terminals with dust. This breaks the inner contact. The solution to the problem is cleaning.

Why wi-fi router does not distribute the Internet

The connection problems described above refer to problems in the computers themselves. But often there are problems that are related to how the router works (or, more precisely, does not work) and does not distribute the Internet.

There are two main problems:

inability to establish a wireless connection;

lack of access if connected.

The listed failures can be easily resolved on your own without resorting to the services of specialists.

How to solve a wireless connection problem

Testing how the router works begins with checking the status of the indicators that are located on the external panel of the router. During normal operation, the LED next to the antenna pattern will be on or flashing. If there is no glow at all, it means that the wireless module is not running on the router. On certain models, there is a separate button that a family member can accidentally turn off.

The absence of a button complicates the solution of the problem a little. You need to go to the "Wireless network" section located in the web interface of the router. In the English-language menu, this section is called "Wireless". There is a check mark in front of the "Enable" box (in English - "Enable"). Clicking the mouse can fix the problem.

It is possible that when the device does not distribute the Internet, the malfunction is related to the radio channel used. Most router models have an automatic configuration function. If it is absent, you can try to install the 1st or 6th channel. They should be suitable for our country.

It so happens that it becomes impossible to connect to a wireless network, as the network displays a message about an incorrectly typed password. It is worth checking the security settings in the web interface. The encryption type set must be AES. The general security standard is WPA2-PSK.

How to solve the problem if there is no access while connected

Quite often it happens that the connection begins to be implemented, but the process itself takes a long time. The status is shown by the message "Receiving IP". After a while, the connection is dropped.

This means that network clients cannot obtain an address due to a disabled DHCP server. You can check this through the settings in the local network. You will need a LAN section, where there should be a check mark next to the DCHP parameter.

Access problems can occur due to incorrect operation of DNS servers. Their incorrect assignment for network clients or a complete lack of assignment, as well as unstable operation of servers are the three main reasons.

The solution to the problem of elimination is as follows. You need to use public DNS. They are provided by Yandex and Google. In the first case, you need to register 77.88.8.8 in the settings, and for Google this value is 8.8.8.8. The data is entered into the computer in the properties of the Internet Protocol of any version of TCP / IP.

All of the above are troubles that you can get rid of on your own. In any other situations, it would be better to contact the technical support of the provider or professional craftsmen.

What to do if Wifi does not work on a laptop? If you are faced with such a problem, do not despair. It is solvable. But first you need to find out for what reasons wifi does not work in a laptop. These can be both software problems and hardware failures. If there are software problems, the situation can be resolved quickly and free of charge. If the Wi-Fi module is burnt out, only replacing it will help. Now a little more detail on how to solve the problem.

What to do if Wifi does not work on a laptop?

Troubleshooting built-in Windows tools

Any laptop has specially dedicated key combinations to enable or disable the Wi-Fi module. This is usually CTRL + F2, but different laptop models use different combinations, such as Fn + F2. Check if wifi is off using these combinations. If for some reason this method does not work, check the status of the adapter through the control panel:

  1. Go to your control panel.
  2. Open the section Network and Internet -> Network and Control Center -> Change adapter settings.
  3. In the window that opens, find the "Wireless network". If it is inactive (gray icon), then double-clicking on it will activate it and Wi-Fi on the laptop will work.

If this did not help and wifi on your laptop still does not work, then you should go to the device manager and check the relevance of the drivers and the status of the module. For this you need:

  1. Go to the control panel again.
  2. Open the section system and security -> system -> device manager. A list of the equipment installed on the laptop will open.
  3. Find the "network adapters" section in the list. By opening it, you can see all the installed communication modules of the laptop.

If wi-fi is not working properly, then to the left of its name you can see an icon with a yellow exclamation mark. This is a sure sign that you need to reinstall the drivers. If you did not find your wi-fi module in this list, but the dispatcher determined an "unknown device", in this case, you also need to install the driver. They can be found on the laptop manufacturer's website under "downloads" or "support". After downloading, just start the installation and follow the instructions of the installation wizard. The laptop may need to be restarted.

Troubleshoot laptop hardware problems

Some laptop models have hardware buttons or toggle switches to enable / disable wireless modules. Before interfering with the laptop, check to see if it is in the off position.

If wifi does not work on the laptop due to a hardware malfunction, then a visit to the service center will help. Of course, the Wi-Fi module can be replaced at home, but if you have no experience in the field of laptop repairs, it is better not to go into it. In case the masters have asked for a very round amount for repairs, you can use external Wi-Fi network cards.

For a long time, manufacturers such as Asus and TP-Link have been producing miniature "USB whistles" with nano receivers. For example, TP-LINK TL-WN725N and ASUS USB-N10 Nano work in the N150 standard and resemble a receiver from a wireless mouse in size and shape. They are completely invisible and very easy to use. Their price does not exceed $ 15. Yes, one USB port will be constantly busy, but this is the easiest and most inexpensive way to solve the problem. Otherwise, you will have to fork out for an expensive replacement of the native module and be patient.

An interesting incident happened the other day, which prompted me to write this article. I got into my hands a completely new, just bought Hewlett Packard HP 15-AC052UR laptop with a pre-installed "Eight". The owner is a modern man and really wanted to try the new Windows 10 operating system, so he asked me to update. No sooner said than done. The update procedure went off without a hitch, but then the trouble began. The first thing that caught my eye after logging in was that the laptop did not see the WiFi network. There was a red cross on the adapter icon in the list of connections. There was no reaction to any attempts to somehow turn on the adapter. Well, we'll fix it. Looking ahead, I will say that I solved the problem and it was very specific. But I want to make a small guide on the example of this case on the topic of what to do if Wi-Fi does not work on a laptop.

Step 1. Is the WiFi adapter turned on?

As practice shows, the reason for more than half of the problems with the wireless network on laptops, netbooks and ultrabooks is that the network card is turned off. How can I check this? Let's start with the Wi-Fi power button - there is one on almost every laptop. It can be in the form of a separate button or a slider, like this:

Or combined with one of the F1-F12 keys:

In the latter case, to turn on, you must press this button in tandem with the function key Fn... If the adapter turns on successfully, the indicator on the case should light up. It can be made separately and marked with an antenna-shaped icon, or located on the power button:

If the laptop does not respond to pressing this button, then most likely you do not have a driver for the function keys installed. To download it, go to the manufacturer's official website, open the "Support" or "Downloads" section and enter the laptop model into the search bar. In the results found, we look for software for the function keys, download, install.
Checking.

Note: If you have a modern laptop, then it may have the following button "On the plane":

It was made by analogy with smartphones and tablets to disable the radio module. When it is turned on in the system tray, an airplane icon appears instead of the network icon:

It must be turned off, otherwise the laptop will not see the wireless network and by itself will not be able to connect to it.

OK, the hardware network card was turned on, but Wi-Fi is not working! Have you turned it on programmatically? Let's check.
We look at the tray icon. If it has an asterisk:

Then skip step 1 and step 2 and go straight to step 3. When there is a red cross on it:

This means that the network is off. To enable in Windows 10 there is a separate switch located in the "Settings" -> "Network and Internet":

By the way, it did not move for me, or rather, when I tried to move it to the "On" position, from itself it returned to the "Off" position. and I clicked on the "Configure adapter parameters" link.
In Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 there is no such thing, and therefore you have to go to the Windows connections. Press the key combination Win + R, enter the command ncpa.cpl:

We find the "Wireless network" icon in the list of connections. It's gray? Then click on it with the right mouse button and select the "Enable" item.

If the WiFi adapter icon is not there at all, most likely the driver is not installed.
Everything was much sadder for me - the Wi-Fi adapter was active, but there was a red cross on it.
Let's move on to the next step.

Step 2. Is the driver for Wi-Fi installed?

Very often, after reinstalling Windows, users forget to install some drivers or install, but not those. Of course, the network card will not work in this situation. We fix it.
We go to the Device Manager, find the "Network adapters" section and see what is there. There must be at least two points. The first is a regular Ethernet network card, the second is wireless.
If there is only a regular network, then look - Above in the Manager there should be an unknown device with an exclamation mark. This is your adapter, for which you now need to download the laptop WiFi adapter driver from the manufacturer's website and install it.
I had the driver installed, so I decided to look at its status: I right-clicked and selected the "Properties" menu item:

If everything is in order, then on the "General" tab in the "Device status" field there should be a line "The device is working normally".
If an error is displayed there, then you must first try to reinstall the driver. To do this, right-click on the adapter again and select "Delete". After that, you need to restart the computer, go to the Device Manager again and see if the driver has been installed.
It didn't help me and I decided to update it. I downloaded the latest version from the Hewlett Packard website, in the Device Manager, right-click on the device and selected the item "Update drivers":

The version has been updated, the device works fine, but the WiFi on the laptop still does not work. What to do?
In the end, this is what helped me. On the official website, in the list of available downloads, I saw that there is a BIOS update for my laptop model, which fixes compatibility problems with Windows 10. Download the utility, run it and wait until it works and reboots the system:

After that, the laptop's wireless network worked.
Note: Updates can be installed either manually or through a special utility. Each manufacturer has its own application for this. For example, for Hewlett Packard it is HP Support Assistant. The app will connect to the server and check for driver updates. If there are any, you will be prompted to install them.

Step 3. Does the laptop see the WiFi network?

The hardware has been verified - let's start with the software. Very often users complain that the laptop does not see the WiFi network. The reason for such a malfunction may be in the laptop and in the router that Wi-Fi distributes. The third option is not given. How to identify the culprit? Very simply, left-click on the network icon in the tray and see what is in the drop-down menu.

If the laptop sees other people's networks, but does not see its own, you need to check the router.
If you don't see any network at all, go back to Steps 1 and 2, since the problem is most likely a hardware problem.
For the purity of the experiment, you can use any mobile gadget - a tablet or a smartphone and see if it connects normally. It will be immediately clear where to "Dig".

As a special case, you can consider the option when the computer cannot connect to the wireless network due to an authorization error. If you have connected to it before, then in this case it is worth trying to delete it in the list of known ones and reconnect:

In Windows 10, this is done in the "Manage Settings", in Windows 8, right-click on your network in the list of networks and select the "Forget" menu item. If this is your first time connecting to this WiFi network, enter a 100% correct password and still discards an authorization error by mistake, then the problem is in the router and you must first try to make a purely digital key. If this does not help, try reflashing it. In 90% of cases, this allows you to successfully solve the problem.

Step 4. Wi-Fi is available, the Internet is not.

A very common problem for novice users. It is usually caused by incorrect Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP / IPv4) settings. You can check this as follows. In Windows, right-click on "Wireless Network" and select the "Status" menu item:

In the "Connection Status" window, click the "Details" button. Another window will open, in which we first look at the line "Default gateway" - there should be the IP address of the router. It is also usually listed as the primary DNS server.
Now we look above, in the line "IPv4 address". The IP from the subnet of the router must be registered there (you can see an example in the screenshot). But if there is nothing in these lines at all, or an IP from the 169.254.X.X subnet is registered, then it means that it was not automatically assigned from the router and was not manually registered.
Click on the "Properties" button and open the item "IP version 4 (TCP / IPv4)":

Here you need to write the address of the router in the fields "Default gateway" and "Preferred DNS server". You can see it on a sticker on the bottom of the device (unless, of course, you have changed it). The mask is usually 255.255.255.0, and in the "IP-address" field we indicate any address from the subnet of the router. Click on OK and reconnect.
If after that a message appears that "a network without Internet access", then in this case we go here.
