Windows 10 hidden features. Support for new formats

Now that Windows 10 is out and millions of people are using it, let's take a look at some of the best hidden opportunities, tricks and features of this operating system. For those in the tank, Windows 10 is out now and you're really going to love it, despite the many shortcomings that have been described over the past few weeks. It's definitely worth updating (or downloading Windows ISO 10 directly). It combines the best of Windows 8 (super-fast startup and improved security) with many features similar to Windows 7 and just as easy to use. No one is forcing you to buy touch screen or explore all the hidden interface elements.

And if you're a computer geek like us, fine tuning The OS will bring you a lot of interesting things. Opening and description tips for experienced users- our favorite stage in getting a new OS. I remember the release of DOS 5.0, when we were still using DOS 3.3, and we tried to optimize our 286 with all sorts of new features. (We passed long haul.) Nostalgia aside, here's what you need to know about Windows improvement 10 to take it up a level after installation.

Task View and Virtual Desktops

One of the best things about Windows 10 is its virtual desktop experience. The fact that she can finally work with them out of the box is a huge step since Mac users OS X and Linux have been using this feature for a long time. This allows you to have multiple tasks and windows on one desktop, email and Twitter on another, and a browser on a third for surfing or something. To use this feature, click the Task View icon in the Control Panel (to the right of the search field), hold down the Windows key (usually shortened to Win), and Tab.

Setting privacy options

When you first set up Windows 10, make sure you select normal installation so that you can set up privacy, which you can't do in express installation. (If you've already skipped this step, that's okay - you can change it in the settings.) Otherwise, you'll have to put up with the distribution of a lot of personal data (and although Windows 10 is free for Windows users 7 and Windows 8, the operating system itself is not free), and you are unlikely to want to share personal information without your knowledge and permission.

Make sure Wi-Fi Sense is turned off

You may disagree, but it's definitely wrong that your WiFi password is sent out to everyone. This the right way make sure that your computer does not do this, and if it does, then you can disable this feature by disabling WiFi Sense.

Running on a virtual machine

If you want to dig deeper into Windows 10 but don't want to borrow your perfectly working machine just yet, you can first install Windows 10 on virtual machine. It's worth noting that this is different from the virtual desktops above. This virtualizes the entire OS inside another OS (the one you have).

Home windows page Explorer and Quick Access

Windows Explorer windows are much more useful this time around, thanks to the new Home tab (pictured above). File copies are now perfectly tracked. and if you look to the top left of the window you will see new group Quick Access, which will allow you to navigate through your recently used folders. This will make it much easier to maintain a fast workflow associated with moving around. file system computer.

Start menu customization

New Start is just a huge improvement over what was in Windows 8.1, and it's simply impossible to describe in words. It combines the best windows elements 7 and Windows 8. And it's completely customizable. Frankly, the first thing many people do is unpin all Microsoft applications, and reduce the size of the menu to look like Windows 7 (picture).

For a while, in some technical preview builds of Windows 10, you could pin the recycle bin to the taskbar, much like in OS X. Unfortunately, this feature seems to have been removed in the release version, but you can still pin its icon to the menu Start.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Here are some keyboard shortcuts that you should know, as they can come in handy in your daily routine:

Windows Tab (task view)
Windows-Right-Up (Moves the application to the top right corner)
Windows-Ctrl-Left or Right (virtual desktop)
Windows-Ctrl-D (new virtual desktop)
Windows-Ctrl-C (ask Cortana)
Windows-S (Daily Glance weather, news, sports)
Windows-Ctrl-F4 (Closes the virtual desktop)
Windows-Up and Down (pins an app to the top or bottom of the screen and maximizes it)

Integration with OneDrive

Free cloud storage is used almost everywhere these days, and Microsoft has made it very easy in Windows 10 with OneDrive. You can use it to store mobile files iOS devices or Android, and even remote access to any file on your PC, not just those in the OneDrive folder.

Stream for Xbox

Windows 10 has finally shown off true Xbox integration, and you can now sign in to your Xbox Live account. But more importantly, you can use it to stream your game on Xbox One through your PC. First you need to activate it on the Xbox One in the "Settings | Preferences | Allow game streaming" menu, and then launch the Xbox application on the PC. (Interestingly, Microsoft also went the other way and added keyboard and mouse support to the Xbox One - not really useful opportunity, assuming you have a PC.)

Original control panel with the rest of the goodies

The new settings panel is very easy to use, and makes a little more sense than the old control panel, which you'll still need if you want to dig deeper into system settings. She is easy to summon even if she is hidden. Just right-click on Start in the lower left corner of the screen, and select it from the drop-down menu, or type Control Panel in the search bar in the lower left corner of the taskbar. If you right-click on the Start button, you will see a lot of useful menus there, such as computer management and disk management. Turning to new version OS, in our case - Windows 10, users, as a rule, look for those functions that they were used to earlier: how to configure this or that parameter, run programs, find certain information about the computer. At the same time, some new features go unnoticed because they don't catch the eye.

This article is about some of these "hidden" Windows features 10 which may be useful for some users and which were not present by default in previous versions operating system from Microsoft. At the same time, at the end of the article you will find a video that shows some of the "secrets" of Windows 10.

Secret dark theme Windows 10

You won’t be able to notice this feature on your own, but Windows 10 has a hidden dark theme that applies to apps from the store, settings windows, and some other elements of the system.

You can activate the "secret" theme through the registry editor. To launch it, press the Win+R keys (where Win is the OS logo key) on your keyboard, and then type regedit in the "Run" field (or you can just enter regedit in field Windows Search 10).

In the Registry Editor, navigate to (Folders on the left) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Themes\ Personalize\

After that, click on the right side of the registry editor right click click and select New - 32 bit DWORD Value and give it a name AppsUseLightTheme. By default, its value will be 0 (zero), and leave this value. Close the Registry Editor and log out, then log back in (or restart your computer) - Windows 10 dark theme will be activated.

By the way, in the browser Microsoft Edge you can also enable the dark theme through the options button on the right upper corner(first item of settings).

Information about used and free disk space - "Storage"

Today, on mobile devices, as well as in OS X, it is quite easy to get information about what and how busy HDD or SSD. In Windows, for this you previously had to use additional programs for analysis content hard disk.

In Windows 10, it became possible to get basic information on the contents of computer disks in the "All Settings" - "System" - "Storage" section.

When you open the specified settings section, you will see a list of connected hard drives and SSD, by clicking on which you will get information about the free and occupied space and see what exactly it is occupied with.

By clicking on any of the items, for example, "System and reserved", "Apps and games", you can get more detailed information according to the corresponding elements and the disk space occupied by them.

Screen recording

If you have a supported video card (almost all modern ones) and latest drivers to it, you can use the built-in DVR recording function game video from the screen. At the same time, you can record not only games, but also work in programs, the only condition is to expand them to full screen.

The feature settings are made in the Xbox app (but work within Windows 10 itself, without the need to specifically launch the app) under Game DVR.

Default to open recording panel screen video, just press the Windows + G keys on the keyboard (I remind you that the panel opens, the current active program must be expanded to full screen).

Laptop touchpad gestures

Windows 10 has added support for many touchpad gestures for managing virtual desktops, navigating between applications, scrolling and similar tasks - if you worked on a MacBook, you should understand what I'm talking about. If not, try it in Windows 10, it's very convenient.

Gestures require a compatible touchpad on a laptop and supported drivers. Windows 10 touchpad gestures include:

  • Scrolling with two fingers vertically and horizontally.
  • Zoom in and out by pinching or spreading two fingers.
  • Right click with two fingers.
  • View all open windows- swipe three fingers away from you.
  • Show desktop (minimize applications) - three fingers towards you.
  • Switch between open applications- three fingers in both directions horizontally.

Touchpad settings can be found in "All settings" - "Devices" - "Mouse and Touchpad».

Remote access to any files on the computer

OneDrive in Windows 10 allows you to access files on your computer, not just those stored in synced folders, but any file in general.

To enable the feature, go to your OneDrive settings (right-click on the OneDrive icon - Options) and enable the "Allow OneDrive to retrieve all my files on this computer" feature. By clicking on "Read More", you can read Additional information about using the feature on the Microsoft website.

Keyboard shortcuts on the command line

If you use Command Prompt a lot, you might be interested in Windows 10's ability to use the standard Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V keyboard shortcuts for copy and paste and more.

In order to use these features, in the command line, click on the icon at the top left, and then go to "Properties". Uncheck "Use old version console", apply the settings and restart the command prompt. In the same place, in the settings, you can go to the instructions for using the new command line features.

Screenshot Timer in Snipping Tool

Few people use, in general, not bad standard application"Scissors" to create screenshots of the screen, program windows or specific areas on the screen. However, it still has users.

In Windows 10, Snipping Tool has acquired the ability to set a delay in seconds before taking a screenshot, which can be useful and was previously only implemented by third-party applications.

Built-in PDF printer

The system has a built-in ability to print to PDF from any application. That is, if you need to save any Internet page, document, picture or something else in PDF, you can simply select "Print" in any program, and specify Microsoft Print to PDF as the printer. Previously, this could only be done by installing third-party software.

Built-in support for MKV, FLAC and HEVC

Windows 10 comes with support for H.264 codecs by default. MKV container, lossless audio in FLAC format, as well as video encoded using the HEVC/H.265 codec (which, apparently, will be used for most 4K video in the near future).

In addition, the built-in windows player, judging by the information in technical publications, shows itself to be more productive and stable than many analogues, like VLC. From myself, I note that it appeared convenient button for wireless transmission playable content to a supported TV.

Scrolling the contents of an inactive window

One more new feature- scrolling the contents of an inactive window. That is, for example, you can scroll the page in the browser, in the "background", talking at this time in Skype.

You can find the settings for this function in "Devices" - "Touchpad". There you can also set how many lines the content scrolls when using the mouse wheel.

Full screen start menu and tablet mode

Several of my readers asked questions in the comments on how to enable the menu Windows start 10 to full screen, as it was in the previous version of the OS. There is nothing easier, and there are two ways to do it.

  1. Go to the settings (through the notification center or by pressing Win + I) - Personalization - Start. Turn on the "Open Start screen in full screen" setting.
  2. Go to Settings - System - Tablet Mode. And turn on the item "Enable additional features sensory Windows controls when using the device as a tablet. When enabled, it activates the full-screen start, as well as some gestures from the 8-ki, for example, closing the window by dragging them down from the top edge of the screen.

Also, the inclusion of the tablet mode by default is located in the notification center as one of the buttons (if you have not changed the set of these buttons).

Change window title color

If immediately after the release of Windows 10, the change in the color of the window title was carried out by manipulating system files, then after updating to version 1511 in November 2015, this option appeared in the settings.

In order to use it, go to "All settings" (this can be done by pressing Win keys+ I), open the section "Personalization" - "Colors".

Select a color and turn on the switch for "Show color in the Start menu, taskbar, action center, and title bar." Ready. By the way, you can set an arbitrary window color, as well as set the color for inactive windows.

For those who upgraded from Windows 7 - Win + X menu

Despite the fact that this feature was already present in Windows 8.1, I consider it necessary to tell about this for users who have upgraded to Windows 10 from the seven.

When you press Windows keys+ X or when you right click on the start button, you will see a menu, very convenient for quick access to many settings and Windows Administration 10 that used to run more action. I highly recommend you get used to it and use it in your work.

Secrets of Windows 10 - video

And the promised video, which shows some of the things described above, as well as some additional features of the new operating system.

I'll finish with this. There are some other subtle innovations, but all the main ones that may interest the reader seem to have been mentioned.

The Windows 10 operating system was developed in an open test mode. Any user could bring something of their own to the development of this product. Therefore, it is not surprising that this OS has acquired many interesting features and newfangled "chips". Some of them are improvements to time-tested programs, others are something completely new.

Talk to your computer aloud with Cortana

Cortana is an analogue of the popular Siri apps, which is very fond of iOS users. This program allows you to give your computer voice commands. You can ask Cortana to take a note, call a friend via Skype, or search the web. In addition, she can tell a joke, sing and much more.

From the list of all open windows you can choose what will occupy the second half of the screen

  2. Pull the window to the corner of the screen. Then it will take a quarter of the resolution of the monitor.

Drag a window to a corner to collapse it into a quarter

  3. Place four windows on the screen in this way.

Can fit up to four windows on the screen

  4. Manage open windows with the Win key and arrows in improved Snap Assist. Just press the button Windows icon and click the up, down, left, or right arrows to move the window to the appropriate side.

Minimize the window several times by pressing Win + arrow

The Snap Assist utility is useful for those who often work with a large number of windows. For example, you can place on one screen text editor and a translator, so as not to switch between them once again.
