Return to the usual way of unlocking. What didn't come in handy

On September 13, 2016, Apple released a new version of the mobile operating system iOS 10. Unlike the previous release, the updated firmware for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch has received a colossal number of changes, starting with a new design of standard applications, ending with a rethinking of some basic principles of working with the operating system. ... We have prepared for you a detailed story about everything you need to know about iOS 10. By and large, you have no reason to delay installing the update and stay on the previous version of the operating system, but if in doubt, scroll down the page and see what you are missing ...

KEY iOS 10 CHANGES

In the new mobile operating system iOS 10, Apple has done a great job both on the interface and functionality of standard applications, and on the principles of working with the operating system as a whole. The list of major changes includes a new lock screen and Today screen, updated Photos and Messages applications, and a number of other innovations.

Lock screen in iOS 10

The first change a user will see after updating to iOS 10 is the new lock screen. Apple has decided to ditch the traditional Slide to Unlock gesture in favor of pressing the Home button to go to the home screen. This can be explained by the company's desire to accustom as many users as possible to using the fingerprint scanner and, as a result, better protection of personal data. In the absence of a stroke, the functionality of the lock screen has also changed: moving your finger to the left now launches the camera, and on the opposite side there is a new screen with widgets.

Home screen and 3D Touch in iOS 10

The home screen has changed the animations for launching and minimizing applications, as well as blur effects when opening the applications folder. In addition, there are new 3D Touch quick actions when you press hard on the Weather, Stocks, Reminders, Health, Home, FaceTime, iCloud Drive, and Settings app icons. As for the background images, Apple decided to add just one image in green tones - an abstract seascape from above - and many wallpapers from previous versions of the mobile operating system have disappeared.

IOS 10 Today screen

A swipe left from the home screen, Action Center, and the lock screen in iOS 10 opens a new screen called Today. It contains new widgets "Weather", "Next", "Maps", "Promotions" and other additions to standard applications, as well as widgets from third-party applications that have been downloaded from the App Store. Users can choose which widgets appear on the Today screen and swap them based on priority and frequency of use.

Notification Center and Control Center in iOS 10

The Notification Center, which is launched with a swipe from the top of the screen, now contains only missed event notifications from various applications. Tapping a notification navigates to the app, while pressing hard on 3D Touch devices opens a quick action list, provided the developer has implemented it. The design of the lower curtain of the "Control Center" has changed, and there is support for 3D Touch for quick launch buttons. For example, you can now turn on a flashlight with different light intensities, copy the last result from a calculator, or set a timer. The "Control Center" now consists of several pages: the first contains icons for quick access to functions and settings, the second panel contains buttons for controlling the player, and the third section is intended for the smart home control system.

Actions with notifications in iOS 10

The new mobile operating system iOS 10 has received more options for working with notifications. They can now contain real-time information, audio recordings, videos and photographs. Additional information from notifications is available for viewing by pressing firmly on devices with 3D Touch or holding your finger on the notification for a long time on older devices. It also allows you to access additional action buttons in notifications. In the App Store, you can find a selection of apps with support for interactive notifications, which includes Playbill, Rambler / Mail, Viber, Todoist, Lingvo Live translator and other programs.

Messages in iOS 10

The Messaging app has new options for expressing emotions when communicating with other users. Text bubble effects let you send messages loudly, softly, with clap or invisible ink, and full-screen effects help you mark important moments. For 3D Touch devices, Tapback is available for quick replies to messages, links and photos, and handwritten animated messages appear on the screen like ink on paper. Plus, with Digital Touch technology, you can send sketches, touches and heartbeats. Other changes include suggestions for replacing words with emoji emoticons for more expressive and informal communication, and displaying page thumbnails when sending links.

One of the major changes has been the emergence of the App Store for iMessage. Users have access to a special section of the application store, which contains extensions that increase the functionality of the messenger, as well as sets of stickers. By analogy with the regular App Store, some of the content is available for free, the rest will have to be paid for. This applies equally to extensions and sticker packs, but keep in mind that stickers will be available only in iMessage, and applications are installed from the regular App Store - users will have access to the functionality of both a regular application and an extension for "Messages".

Photos in iOS 10

The Photos app for iOS 10 introduces improved face recognition with machine learning technology to automatically group similar faces. In the new album "Faces", you can add people to your favorites, hide unwanted users, see similar albums and photos depending on the location. The same technologies are used to scan a media library and then recognize objects and scenes in photographs. Another change was the appearance of the "Memories" tab, which automatically gets better frames for certain periods of time. In the Places album, all of your photos, videos, and Live Photos are displayed on a map. The interface has also received changes, in particular, in the "Albums" section, the folders have become larger and are arranged in pairs on the screen.

CHANGES IN STANDARD iOS 10 APPS

Almost all pre-installed apps in iOS 10 have received changes, ranging from minor interface improvements to completely redesigned designs and new functionality. We advise you to pay the most attention to the updated Apple Music service, a more convenient Clock and the Maps application, even if some of the latter's important functions are not available in Russia. Also, pleasant surprises await the owners of Apple Watch and smart homes.

We remind you that if you do not use some standard programs, for example, you prefer alternative email clients, Yandex.Maps or third-party calendars, you can hide application icons from the home screen. In fact, the preinstalled software is not removed - the program icon simply disappears. So it's purely about aesthetics and reducing the number of elements on the home screen, not freeing up memory. At any time, you can return the icons of standard applications using the App Store.

System

1. Return the usual way of unlocking

In iOS 10, by default, after unlocking by fingerprint, you remain on lockscreen and do not go to the home screen. For those who love the iOS 9 unlock style, this is.

2. Ability to delete all messages in the Notification Center

Remove Instagram notifications five days in advance with a strong (or sustained) press of the X button in the Notification Center.

3. Flashlight brightness settings

By pressing firmly on the flashlight icon in the Control Center, you can select the brightness level: strong, medium and low.

4. "Magnifier" function

Do you want to bring the world around you closer? All you need to do is take advantage of the new iOS 10 feature. 5. Increase sticker size

After you have chosen a sticker to send in a message, you can make it larger or smaller with the usual gesture with two fingers, and your interlocutor will display it in the size you have chosen.

6. Use stickers instead of emojis

More like trolling, of course, than a hidden feature, but now stickers can be placed on top of everything, including images and emojis. Quite an interesting way to diversify your correspondence.

7. Images are saved separately from attachments

If you are in a group chat, where every second someone sends an attached file, or you just want to separate GIF files from archives, in the required dialog go to the "Information" section and go to the very bottom. All attachments are already sorted into two different categories: images and attachments.

8. Read receipts in every chat

In iOS 10, read reports are now available for every conversation. The corresponding button is located in the same section "Information".

9. Sending images in low quality

Animated stickers and various gifs take up a lot of space in the iMessage archive over time. To prevent your iPhone's memory from being clogged with such content, go to Settings -> Messages and activate low quality mode.

Siri

10. Siri text can be corrected

It often happens that the voice assistant Siri does not recognize speech correctly. Instead of manually making edits to the text, you can now simply click on the recognized phrase, and Siri itself will offer several similar options for commands. This way Siri will better detect your voice over time.

11. Siri can take selfies

If you ask Siri to take a selfie, the front camera will launch.

Cards

12. Siri, find my car

If your car has Bluetooth or CarPlay, Maps will automatically display its location, tell you when it was last used, and even let you add a photo.

You can also ask Siri, "Where is my car?" To get information about the location of the car and even get directions to it.

13. Public transport settings

For people who use public transportation frequently, Apple has added in iOS 10 the ability to customize which mode of transportation is displayed. For example, you can hide train or ferry routes.

mail

15. Sorting Frequently Used Email Categories

If you have the "Move" function specified in the mail settings by swiping to the left, thanks to machine learning, the application will begin to offer various options for message categories. For example, "Coupons and Discounts".

16. Completion of topics

IOS 10 introduced the Completing Topics feature, which allows you to view all messages in a conversation, even if some of them have been moved to different mailboxes. If you prefer that the newest letters are displayed at the top, activate the item "Last letter at the top" in Settings -> Mail.

17. Automatic unsubscription from mailings

iOS 10 can detect emails related to automatic mailings and prompts you to unsubscribe immediately. Goodbye, search for the "Unsubscribe" button in small print at the bottom of the message.

Safari

18. Ability to quickly close all tabs

Want to close absolutely all browser tabs in one fell swoop? No problem, just hold down the tab access button in the lower right corner on the iPhone or in the upper right corner on the iPad, after which the system will prompt you to close all available tabs. This operation does not clear the browser history.

19. View and delete data of individual websites

Want to get rid of a specific cookie or web data? Go to Preferences -> Safari -> Add-ons -> Site Data.

Camera & Photo

20. RAW support in third-party applications

With the release of iOS 10, developers have the ability to work with RAW images. Apple has provided tools to enable photo apps to be added

21. Markup function

The Photos app now lets you draw on a photo or screenshot, add text, and more. If you don't like your overlays, you can always delete them.

Music

22. New playlist with selected tracks

With iOS 10 and the new Apple Music app, the company has added a custom weekly selection of new music based on the user's musical preferences. The playlist is updated every Friday, and if you wish, you can save it to your own collection.

23. View lyrics

In the new version of Apple Music, you can view lyrics. To do this, with the mini-player fully open, you need to swipe up. Although Apple announced this feature at WWDC 2016, many users have a hard time finding the feature.

24. Optimizing space

In older versions of iOS, Apple tried to implement automatic local library size control. With iOS 10 and Optimize Storage, you can still let the system do it for you, or customize your music collection yourself. At your discretion.

Other changes

25. Ability to save voice messages

26. Sleep

In iOS 10, a feature called Sleep is available in the standard Clock app. Apple suggests making the app setup process easier by asking a series of questions. The user is prompted to specify the required number of hours for sleep and active days of the week.

Improvements in iPad

27. Spotlight anywhere

If your iPad has a Smart Connector or a Bluetooth keyboard is connected to your tablet, you can invoke Spotlight from anywhere on the system with Command + Space. The function also works in Split View mode. Thus, any application can be displayed in the left pane, even if it is not in the recent list (Command + Tab).

28. Different settings for touch and mechanical keyboards

Autocorrect and auto-capitalization can be useful when using the virtual keyboard, but this is not the case with a mechanical keyboard. With iOS 10, you can use different settings for standard and Bluetooth keyboards.

Apple unveiled a new version of iOS at WWDC 2016 Developers Conference. The updated mobile OS received 10 important innovations, which were indicated at the presentation. The company notes that there will be many more fresh "chips" in the final release.

1. New lock screen

One of the main innovations of the iOS 10 update is a heavily redesigned lock screen, which has become more functional. New notification cards are now displayed on this screen, which can be “expanded” with a long press - the 3D Touch gesture. When you unfold the notification, you are prompted to take some action immediately. Whether it is answering a message or writing a letter in the mail.

It is also worth noting that the iPhone screen now lights up immediately when the user took the device in his hands and turned the screen towards him. Now it is not necessary to activate the screen with the button. In addition, the iPhone is no longer unlocked with the classic swipe-to-unlock gesture. Now only one gesture works on the lock screen - from left to right to call the camera, and the device is unlocked with the Home button.

And a new feature has been added to the Control Center - now it contains a convenient menu for controlling music playback.

2. Siri

The main change for Siri voice assistant is its opening to third-party developers. They can now use Siri to integrate into their apps and games. For example, using Apple's voice assistant, you can order a taxi in Uber or call someone via WhatsApp.

It is worth noting that in iOS 10, Siri will have a male voice in Russian.

3. QuickType keyboard

The default keyboard in iOS 10 has a powerful typing hint mechanism. They are now offered based on how machine learning works. For example, the interlocutor can send the user a message like "Where are you now?", And the keyboard will immediately offer to send his location on the map.

Among other things, QuickType is integrated into the system, which means that the keyboard analyzes data from different applications, for example, from the calendar and contacts. The longer a user writes with a standard QuickType-enabled keyboard, the better the machine learning engine will adapt to them, offering increasingly accurate prompts.

QuickType understands different languages on the fly and offers hints even without switching keyboard layouts.

4. Photos

The default Photos app is smarter. It now recognizes objects and faces in photos, offering detailed sorting. The program understands objects with precision to the type of landscape and everything that is in the background. As already mentioned, "Photos" now detects people's faces and can sort images by the presence of a specific person.

An interesting feature called Photo Memories has also been introduced. It offers the creation of something like advanced slideshows with music and smooth transitions between photos. Among other things, videos are added to such sloud shows. The application understands when and where the photos and videos were taken, so “Photo-memories” can be composed about the stay in some place.

5. Maps

The stock maps app on iOS 10 has been redesigned with a few fresh features. Among them there is an improved Spotlight menu, a convenient view for navigating around the city with the display of traffic information. When moving along a route, the program now automatically searches for the most optimal paths and suggests them.

This all also works for Apple CarPlay. The Maps application is now also open for integration with third-party applications.

6. Apple Music

Apple's music streaming service has received a big update with a new interface design. Among the innovations: a more convenient and interesting section "For You" with recommended music; a separate section with music downloaded to the device; the play screen now shows synced lyrics.

7. Apple News

Apple's proprietary application for viewing news in Russia and the CIS practically does not work, but it is still worth mentioning about the innovations in it. The developers have improved the design of the main page with the best news and articles, added notifications about fresh and hot materials, and also integrated a subscription mechanism for paid periodicals.

Apple News now adapts even better to the user's reading tastes.

8. Home Kit

Apple is actively developing its own smart home concept, complementing it and working with various partners. At the WWDC 2016 presentation, it was announced that developers in the United States, China and other countries are now integrating the Home Kit smart home system into new buildings. Thus, those who wish can purchase a new apartment with a smart home system from Apple. And to make managing such a home as easy as possible, Apple is releasing a dedicated “Home” app for iOS.

The program will allow you to manage all the sensors and accessories in the house. There is integration with Siri.

9. Application "Phone"

IOS 10 adds a dedicated VoIP API. Now all calls from third-party applications are integrated into the system and the main application "Phone". Roughly speaking, all calls are now collected in one place.

It's also worth noting that voicemail can now be transcoded to text. In some countries, the calling app will detect unknown numbers on incoming calls. This is done to detect spam and unwanted calls. Apple uses third-party services for this.

Among other things, the interface of the call screen has changed. Now you can put the subscriber's avatar or any other photo on its background

10. Messages

Apple has decided to completely revamp its default messaging app, making it more fun and modern. There are really many innovations in this program. For a start, the links you send now have a preview with a page title, image, or even a video. Videos from YouTube or other video hosting can be viewed directly in the chat on the preview.

Apple loves Emoji, so they are 3x bigger. Apparently, so that people in the chat pay more attention to the emotions of emoticons. Also, a mechanism is integrated into the "Messages" application, with the help of which you can replace words with smiles with one tap. It works this way: the user wrote a message, clicked on a special button, after which the keywords will be highlighted and if you click on each one, they will turn into Emoji emoticons with the corresponding meaning. Even at the presentation, Apple representatives joked that children of the future will have language problems due to the popularity of Emoji.

Before and after automatically replacing words with Emoji

Just like in the new messenger, the Messages app in iOS 10 can give messages a different look with animations. There are four such types of messages in total: loud, gentle, cautious and invisible. The latter is especially interesting, since messages can be covered with a veil. It is removed by the recipient of the message with a simple gesture. You can do the same with photographs.

Among other things, in the "Messages" now there is handwriting input, which is not converted into plain text, but is sent in the form in which it was drawn. For those who like to edit photos, the Digital Touch function has appeared, which allows you to take a photo or video with the imposition of handwritten inscriptions or effects on it. All this can also be sent to the interlocutor.

IOS 10 open beta will begin in July, and developers can already access the system. The final release will take place in the fall along with the release of the new iPhones. The following devices will receive the update:

  • iPhone 6s / iPhone 6s Plus.
  • iPhone 6 / iPhone 6 Plus.
  • iPhone SE.
  • iPhone 5s.
  • iPhone 5 / iPhone 5c.
  • iPad Pro (12.9) / iPad Pro (9.7).
  • iPad Air 2.
  • iPad Air.
  • iPad 4.
  • iPad mini 4.
  • iPad mini 3.
  • iPad mini 2.
  • iPod touch 6.

Apple developers have significantly modernized the capabilities of the built-in messenger iMessage, adding new functions and various effects: Digital Touch, Bubble Effects and much more. Now communication through messages has become even more expressive and more fun. We invite you to look at new opportunities in reality!

Video overview of new features in Messages on iOS 10

According to Apple representatives, the Messages application is one of the most popular among users of iOS devices. That is why it was decided to personalize communication as much as possible. Along with text messages, the user can now send background animations, stickers, quickly respond to received SMS, etc.

Bubble Effects lets you send bubbles to iMessage with a variety of animation effects. So the user can show their emotions to the interlocutor. Another feature is the Digital Touch function, which allows you to create small sketches, send your heart rate, etc. Photos attached to the message can be edited using the built-in editor. There was a Markup function for annotating images.

The size of emoji has changed noticeably: now the emoji have become three times larger. Plus, we added the function of automatic suggestions to replace words with suitable emoji. In addition, the user can send hidden messages that the interlocutor will not see until he makes a swipe.

The Messages app now supports preview links. That is, you can watch the video received via iMessage by following the link without opening it and without leaving the application. Likewise, you can listen to music, for example.

Finally, we note that Apple has opened the API for developers. Stickers and GIFs can now be added to messages via third party apps. Plus, it became possible to make payments without leaving Messages. How all these features work, see the video from MacRumors.

Apple has officially unveiled a new generation of its proprietary mobile platform - iOS 10. The software product was announced at the WWDC, which kicked off in San Francisco on June 13.

The anticipation ahead of the release of iOS 10 felt almost stronger than on the eve of the announcement of the next iPhone. In the new OS, Apple has implemented a significant number of new features, as well as optimized work - improved system performance and decreased response time to user actions.

Demonstrating iOS 10, the company talked about 10 major innovations, including a new panel with widgets in place of the Spotlight screen, a new lockscreen and interactive icons on the desktop. The lock screen will offer a system with rich notifications and advanced 3D Touch taps.

Another innovation concerns Siri. Apple announced the launch of its third-party Voice Assistant API. This will allow, for example, iPhone users to ask an assistant to call Uber or check in for a flight from an airline application: the scope of the function is very wide.

Siri is already being used in Slack, WhatsApp and WeChat messengers, Uber, Lyft and Didi ordering apps, Shuttefly image search, Pinterest, Runtastic and RunKeeper sports, Banking Square, and Spark, Vonage, and Skype.

Siri's deep learning technology is now also used in the keyboard, which will provide more accurate prompts, taking into account the context, for example, distinguishing the play of children in the park from the play of Spartacus. The tooltips will also take into account your current location, contacts, calendar information, and multilingual typing.

The changes affected the Photos application. The native photo app for iOS 10 can recognize faces and objects. Each photo requires 11 billion computing operations, said Apple - the current power of mobile devices allows it. Photos will be automatically combined into collections, so it's up to the user to take the photos, and the iPhone or iPad will sort the content and prepare a video by itself.

Apple continues to improve maps in iOS 10. In the new OS, the application received an updated design, as well as a number of new features: hints, "smart" search, dynamic view in the navigator mode (along the way, for example, you can find a gas station). In addition, Apple Maps now analyzes the calendar and offers the user directions to a location.

Apple opens the mapping service API to third-party developers. Users can now call a taxi (and pay with Apple Pay). In this case, the maps will show the current trip: where the driver is, where he is going and how long to wait.

A significant update has affected the Music application in iOS 10. A radically new interface should simplify the use of the Apple Music music service: in the "For You" tab, one playlist has appeared, to which new songs recommended by the service will be added every day; added support for lyrics, a new "Downloaded Music" tab, and a list of recently played songs. The Connect music service tab has disappeared from the main menu.

A key improvement in iOS 10 has touched the Phone app. Apple demonstrated a function to convert voice mail to text, detect telephone spam for users, make incoming VoIP calls look like regular phone calls, and improve the contact card.

In the top ten, Apple has added a new Home application, which allows you to organize your smart home devices. Using the program, you can control compatible devices. HomeKit-based product listings include lamps, thermostats, electronic locks, air conditioners, doorbells, garage door openers, sound systems, humidifiers, and more.

The function is accessible from the Control Center.

Several important innovations have been implemented in the iMessage application: handwritten messages, thumbnails of inserted links, including YouTube videos, inserting photos from the library with a simple swipe, automatic emoji substitution; you can now add effects to messages or change the size of the text if desired. The applications have tripled emoticons and added the Digital Touch option - the interlocutor sees in real time what the user is drawing. The technology works in a similar way on the Apple Watch.

As part of the presentation, Apple announced the opening of iMessage for developers and the launch of the App Store for branded chat. Now third-party developers can integrate their services into chat, including sending payments using Messages.

Other new features in iOS 10 include collaboration on notes, Live Photos editing, Split View for Safari on iPad, and Bedtime Alarm in Watch to help you get regular sleep and get notifications when it's time to go to bed.

IOS 10 compatible devices include iPhone 5 / 5c / 5s / SE / 6/6 Plus / 6s / 6s Plus, iPad Pro 9.7 / 12.9, iPad Air 1/2, iPad 4, iPad mini 2/3/4 as well as iPod touch 6G. For iPhone 4s, iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad mini, and iPod touch 5G, iOS 9 will be the latest.

Download iOS 10 beta 1 can registered developers, starting today, public testing will begin in July this year. The public version of the operating system will be available on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch this fall.
