USB keyboard not working: possible causes and solutions. Standard connection and detection of a HID-compliant mouse

As you know, the mouse (manipulator, pointing device) is an essential attribute of any desktop computer and is often used when working with laptops, despite the touchpads available on them. For some time now, so-called HID-compatible devices have appeared, including mice. Next, consider what a HID-compatible mouse is, how to connect it to any computer or laptop, install necessary set drivers and fix possible problems at work.

What are HID Compliant Devices?

And, perhaps, it is worth starting with the very definition of what such devices are. The abbreviation is formed by shortening the English term Human Interface Device, which literally means "device with a human interface." IN common understanding such devices are usually characterized as devices designed to work with a person. Initially, this class mainly included only devices designed for connection via USB ports, but today their nomenclature has expanded quite significantly. Despite such an abstruse name, all these peripherals support the Plug & Play standard, which corresponds to a term like “plug and play”. In other words, the same HID-compatible mouse can simply be connected to a computer or laptop, and further actions of the user can only consist in the personalized setting of the manipulator.

Standard connection and detection of a HID-compliant mouse

If we consider this question From a practical point of view, today any control device connected via USB, Bluetooth or even Wi-Fi interfaces is recognized precisely as the HID standard. As already clear, this does not apply to removable drives.

As for connecting a HID-compatible mouse, it's easy enough to use desired type connections with a computer or laptop, and you can use both wired and wireless devices. Usually, immediately after the system reports that a new device has been detected, the search and installation of the driver will begin, which is necessary to ensure the operation of the device (however, as well as for any other equipment).

Do I need to install a HID compliant mouse driver in Windows 7 and above?

On Windows systems latest generations there are quite extensive own databases of drivers, including online repositories, from which the most suitable control software is selected. Thus, after the HID-compliant mouse driver is found and installed, a pop-up notification will appear in the system tray that the device is connected and ready to work. If a message is displayed that during the installation of the control software correct driver was not found, or there were problems with its installation, you will have to integrate it into the system yourself. However, for the most part this applies to specialized multi-button gaming mice, insofar as conventional manipulators with a wheel, two or three buttons are determined by Windows systems without problems.

But even despite the problems that have arisen, some primary driver can still be installed. Another thing is that the device under his control does not work correctly or does not work at all.

Installing native device drivers

If we consider modern game controllers with much more features than standard models, as a rule, when buying them, the media with drivers is supplied in a mandatory order. You can install the necessary software yourself directly from the media or, using the "Device Manager" with the driver update item, specify the path to the disk with the software or allow the system to self search drivers for local computer. The first option looks more preferable if the media with the drivers contains special installers in the form of executable EXE files, and the second is suitable for cases where the drivers are presented in the form of INF, SYS, etc. files.

Note: if the HID-compatible mouse driver in Windows 10 for some reason is not installed, or during the installation process different kind errors, you can try to initially run the installer (if one is really available) in compatibility mode with the operating system of the version below.

In addition, you can configure the manipulator after installing the driver through the classic "Control Panel" and through the "Options" menu by selecting the appropriate sections ("Mouse" or "Devices").

Unfortunately, sometimes when connecting such mice to laptops, conflicts can occur, and one of the most simple exits from the current situation is to disable the touchpad, for which you can use the most common "Device Manager". You can do it even easier by simply changing USB port from 2.0 to 3.0 and vice versa.

Automated databases and programs for installing and updating drivers

A much simpler technique for finding or updating what is needed for the driver handler to work is to use automated programs. For example, very popular is the universal driver pack Solution, which is suitable even for offline driver search, since its database is much larger than that present in Windows, including official Microsoft resources in the Internet.

It is no less easy to use utilities designed exclusively for updating control software, such as driver booster, which, however, look for and install drivers for absolutely all the equipment that will be found during the initial scan, and not just for any one device, but they turn exclusively to the websites of manufacturers and developers software, which eliminates viruses on computers or equipment inoperability after installation required packages drivers. In addition, the use of such programs is also relevant if the mouse is connected via Bluetooth, when it may be necessary to update the driver of the corresponding wireless adapter.

Manual search for a specific driver

Finally, if in the same Windows 10 HID-compatible mouse does not work precisely because of the lack of a driver, you can find it yourself by contacting the manufacturer's resource.

To search for the most relevant software, in the "Device Manager" on the details tab, select the item to display the hardware ID and search for the driver by the longest line that contains the VID and PID identifiers, taking into account both the system version and its bit depth.

Any USB keyboard can suddenly outgrow its work - even a regular budget one, even with an advanced design, backlighting and a bunch of additional buttons. USB keyboards are not much, but still more vulnerable than keyboards connected via the PS/2 port. The list of possible causes of problems with the PS / 2 keyboard is small: as a rule, problems occur either with the keyboard itself, or with a wire, or with a connector motherboard. The range of possible causes of problems with USB keyboards is slightly wider, respectively, due to the very USB interface. The possible causes of a non-working USB keyboard and ways out of the situation will be discussed below.

1. Pulled wire

If the USB keyboard worked successfully, and then at some certain point it stopped responding to input, first you should check if the wire is pulled out of the USB port on the computer. Even if the wire is in place, you can temporarily remove it from the USB port and insert it again after a couple of seconds.

2. Another USB port

If previous method did not give successful results, you need to reconnect the keyboard to a different USB port. This will either identify one of the or rule out one possible cause of the problem. After a motherboard failure due to a power surge, one or more USB ports may stop working, while others remain working. If the keyboard does not work with any of the USB ports, you need to check the operability of the USB ports themselves by connecting any other device to them - a USB flash drive, mobile device, printer etc. If all USB ports on the computer turn out to be inoperative, then the problem will then need to be solved with them.

Keyboard connected to USB 3.0 (port with output of blue color), may not work in progress Windows installation until the drivers are installed on the motherboard. In this case, the keyboard must be reconnected to USB 2.0 (port with output white color).

3. Driver reinstallation

If reconnecting to another USB port does not work, you need to check if the keyboard works in the BIOS environment. The fact of successfully entering the BIOS and moving the navigation keys through its sections will mean that the problem has arisen at the Windows OS level. In this case, you can try to reinstall the keyboard drivers. You can do this in the controller. Windows devices. You can get into it in Windows 7 by calling the Start menu and selecting Control Panel.

In Windows 8.1 and 10 systems, the path is shorter: the device manager is directly available in the context menu on the Start button.

Directly in the Device Manager window, open the "Keyboards" section, on the "HID Keyboard" item, call context menu and remove the driver.

We confirm the decision.

We restart the computer.

After the reboot, the keyboard driver will be installed automatically.

For individual models USB keyboard manufacturers may provide their own drivers supplied with such keyboards. This point needs to be clarified, and if so, then the driver must be installed manually by downloading it from the manufacturer's website or by finding installation disk supplied with the keyboard.

4. Enabling USB Keyboard Support Controller in BIOS

A motherboard failure (as a result of the same power surge) can cause the USB keyboard support controller to disable in BIOS settings. Not often, however, it also happens that the USB controller for keyboard support at the BIOS level is disabled initially. This nuance will make itself felt only when there is a need for the computer to work in pre-boot mode. Until this moment Windows system will use the USB keyboard natively. Of course, in such cases, there is no way to do without a PS / 2 keyboard, and if one is not stored anywhere just in case, it will need to be borrowed from someone for a while. Alternative option- usage USB adapter- PS/2.

What needs to be done by entering the BIOS? In the BIOS settings, you need to find the USB keyboard support controller option. These are usually the inscriptions "Keyboard Support" or "Legacy USB Support". In the UEFI BIOS, the name may simply be "USB Support". Having found it, you need to check that the value opposite is not “Disabled” (off), but “Enabled” (on). The "Enabled" value must also be set in the "USB Controller" parameter. For example, in AMI BIOS version 17.9 USB controllers are configured in the "Integrated Peripherals" section.

5. Faulty keyboard

And finally, the simplest test to check the performance of the USB keyboard itself is to connect it to another computer device.

Have a great day!

When you connect a new USB gadget, you can often see a pop-up Announcement about connecting a HID device. Wherein operating system does not divide devices into types, does not define the device model (as is the case, for example, with hard drives and flash cards).

HID (Human Interface Device) - a device that connects to computer science to participate in human work. Simply put, HID is an input device. Input devices are required for direct human participation in computer operation: input of initial data for calculations, selection of action parameters, editing of existing data and results, etc.

Types of HID devices.

Input devices differ in the type of input information.

Text information:

Keyboards- are used to manage technical and mechanical devices(computer, calculator, push-button telephone). Each key corresponds to one or more specific characters. It is possible to increase the number of keyboard actions using keyboard shortcuts. On this type of keyboard, the keys are accompanied by stickers depicting the symbols or actions corresponding to the keystroke.

Sound information:

Microphone- an electroacoustic device that converts sound vibrations into vibrations electric current, are used in many devices (telephones and tape recorders, in sound and video recording, on radio and television, for radio communication).

Graphic information:

Scanner- a device for reading a flat image and presenting it in raster electronic form.

Digital camera- a camera using an array of semiconductor photosensitive elements (matrix), on which the image is focused using a lens system. The resulting image is stored in in electronic format in the memory of the camera itself or in an additional digital media.

Webcam - digital video or a camera capable of capturing images in real time for transmission over the Internet as in streaming mode as well as for certain periods of time.

Capture board (tuner)- electronic for converting an analog video signal into a digital video stream. Used to capture TV signal, signal from CCTV cameras, etc.

HID controllers vary in functionality.

Relative positioning (process information about movement):

Mouse- a manipulator that converts mechanical movements into the movement of the cursor on the screen. There are mechanical, optical, gyroscopic, touch mice.

trackball- a manipulator whose principle of operation is similar to a mechanical ball mouse. Similar to a mouse in terms of operation and function. The user directly controls the ball mounted on a special holder with sensors using the palm or fingers.

Trackpoint- a miniature strain gauge joystick used in laptops as a replacement for a mouse. The trackpoint reads the direction and pressure of the user's finger.

touchpadTouchpad, mainly used in laptop computers. Unlike a trackpoint that reads finger pressure, the touchpad reads capacitive characteristics when the finger touches capacitive sensors. Therefore, controlling the touchpad with non-conductive objects (pen, pencil, stylus) is quite problematic.

Joystick- an information input device, which is a pen swinging in two planes, the lateral pressure of which is read by sensors at the base of the device. used as gaming gadget, as well as a means of control (for example, the control of robotic equipment in production).

Absolute positioning (calculate absolute coordinates on the plane, which is the device):

Graphics tablet- This is a device for entering graphics (individual lines and drawings) by hand directly into a computer. Consists of a pen and a flat tablet that is sensitive to pen pressure.

Touchscreen ( touch screen) - an information input device, which is a screen that reacts to touching it (used in modern smartphones, payment and information terminals).

Separately, I would like to highlight special HID devices for computer games:

Gaming mice- different from normal computer mice high sensitivity, adjustable weight, big amount programmable buttons.

Keypads- special game keyboards-top boxes, in which the buttons are combined for maximum convenience of the player (in modern models built-in mini-joystick).

Steering wheel and pedals- manipulators for the genre of racing (auto racing).

Joystick– used for the flight simulator genre.

Gamepads- special game pads used in arcade genres (switched from game consoles).

dance platform– special platforms with pressure sensors. Management is done with the help of the legs. Used for games of the "dance arcade" genre.

Musical instruments (guitars, drums)– special manipulators in the form musical instruments with buttons and pressure sensors. Used for games of the "musical arcade" genre.
