Positioning

TCL Mobile decided to market brands such as Alcatel and Blackberry. As a result, the Alcatel line ends at 15,000 rubles (about 250 euros), while the Blackberry starts at 250-300 euros. From the point of view of the manufacturer, this is the right decision, but there is no understanding on the market that Alcatel and Blackberry belong to the same company, which creates the feeling that the former do not have expensive smartphones, and the latter do not have budget smartphones. This is not a good thing, as Alcatel has established itself as a supplier in the past. interesting solutions in terms of price / quality ratio, including in the middle price segment.

In the 2018 lineup, Alcatel 5 plays the role of a flagship, although by the standards of the market this model cannot be called a flagship, this is an ordinary middle peasant with a number of fashionable options - face unlocking, improved front cameras. We have before us a typical offer from the B-brand, in which a number of characteristics have been improved in order to distinguish the device from many analogs that are already on the market.

In my opinion, this model will be of interest to everyone who is looking for an unbroken design, big screen and at the same time does not require too much from the apparatus. For those who meticulously study the characteristics, the model is definitely not suitable, since there is an excess of supply in this price segment, and most devices are exactly in the same price group. For B-brand consumers, 18x9 screen geometry is not yet a determining factor, they are not ready to pay for such a display. As a result, we can assume that this device will be in demand by a small number of buyers, its sales primarily depend on the availability on store shelves and an advertising campaign.

Design, dimensions, controls

To begin with, the device is completely made of plastic, although one might get the impression that the side frame is metal, the metallized coating was specially used for such a feeling. The device is available in two colors, silver and gold.

I like both versions, they look unbroken, and here we have to give Alcatel its due, this design is noticeably more expensive than you expect from a device of this class. It reminded me of recent devices from Sony, for example, the XA2 Ultra, which is in a completely different price class, it is two times more expensive.

And the fact that Alcatel 5 looks like this will be a plus for some, but only if people think about it. Otherwise, the design will not be taken into account, these are two different approaches to products, in one someone understands the value of the exterior, in the other it is simply ignored.

The dimensions of the smartphone are 152.3x71.1x8.45 mm, the weight is 144 grams. Due to the roundness of the rear panel, the case fits perfectly in the hand, there are no complaints about it. The device does not stick out in the pocket, there are also no drawbacks. On the left side there is a combined slot for two nanoSIM cards, as well as a memory card.

But on the right side there is a ribbed on / off button, above it is a volume rocker. A 3.5 mm jack is on the top, along with a second microphone. At the bottom there is the main microphone, USB Type C connector.

The noise canceling system in devices of this level is a rarity, usually Chinese manufacturers get by with one microphone. The fact that there is such a system here allows you to use the device in noisy conditions, the speech quality improves, the interlocutor hears you better.

The fingerprint sensor is located on the rear panel and is easy to find by touch. Given that you can use a face to unlock, the fingerprint sensor is needed only for those who do it the old fashioned way. But it works quickly (the declared time is 0.3 seconds), no problems arise with it.

There are two cameras above the screen, we will talk about them separately, but, most importantly, the device retains an LED indicator (it blinks white, quite bright). This is a rarity for modern devices, so this option is welcome.

The bottom line about the quality of materials and impressions of the design of the model, I must say that it compares favorably with many classmates, here you can feel the style. Another thing is that many will simply ignore this and will not pay attention.

Display

The screen in the smartphone is 5.7 inches, 18: 9, 1440x720 pixels, IPS, 2.5D, Dragontrail, supports up to 5 clicks, there is an automatic brightness control. But if we put aside the dry characteristics, then I must say that the automatic brightness control works strangely, it is very late on the street, so the display often becomes unreadable, and you have to peer at it. The maximum brightness of the backlight is lower than on many devices, which does not cause problems in the room, but in the bright sun it already creates inconveniences with automatic adjustment. By turning the backlight to the maximum, you get a distinguishable picture.

And this is what the picture looks like when manually adjusted to the maximum.

Indoors, I like the screen much more, although it simply cannot be called the best. He's nice, but the settings color profile differ from most models on the market. And this strangeness hits the eyes, you need to get used to the device. After a week of use, you will no longer pay attention to it, but the first time the colors on the screen catch your eye. Spin the machine around in the store to see how it suits you. Everything here is purely individual. So, many people whom I asked for their opinions on the color rendering, vividness of the picture on the screen of Alcatel 5, said that everything is in order or just fine. But to someone, like me, the picture seemed somewhat distorted.

The screen is responsive and a pleasure to work with. Viewing video on the device is also good, the geometry of the screen does not cause any inconvenience, this is the future that will come for everyone in the near future. It is possible that I would like a higher screen resolution, but in everyday life there is no good from this, for most of them this resolution will be enough.

Battery

The built-in Li-Ion battery has a capacity of 3000 mAh. The declared time of talk time - up to 12 hours (4G), in standby mode - up to 420 hours (4G), charger 5V / 2A, full charging time - 2.5 hours.

Unfortunately, the chipset from MediaTek is such that it is very power hungry, for example, the playing time of an unconverted video in HD resolution at maximum brightness is a little less than 5 hours.

A surprisingly low rate that has become a kind of business card for chipsets from MediaTek, in other use cases it's not so bad. For example, this device is quite capable of working for a day with 4 hours of screen operation (automatic adjustment, average backlight brightness), as well as up to thirty minutes of talks. That is, Alcatel 5 can provide a full-time job. It's a pity, but the device does not hold the record for battery life, many manufacturers that use similar chipsets install batteries with a capacity of 4000 mAh or even more to compensate for the processor's shortcomings, its gluttony. But this did not happen here, since the dimensions of the device and its weight would have changed.

Memory, chipset, performance

RAM 3 GB, built-in 32 GB (23 GB available), memory cards up to 32 GB. From the point of view of memory, everything is excellent in the device, there are no limitations, which are present in many models in the lower price group. The fact that memory cards are only up to 32 GB can be counted serious disadvantage, but only for advanced users, and they will not be found among the buyers of this device.

Chipset MediaTek MT6750 (4 cores Cortex A53 up to 1.5 GHz, 4 cores Cortex A53 up to 1 GHz), GPU MALI-T860M2. This is an average performance solution, it has no obvious failures or achievements, it is enough for the eyes for the interface and the operation of most applications. Look at the synthetic test results.

Communication capabilities

To begin with, there are no problems with GPS, everything works well, the start is almost instantaneous, the maps correctly display your position in all situations. Bluetooth version 4.2, USB 2.0 (USB Type C connector), Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n. V LTE standard the following frequencies are supported: band 1/3/7/8/20 / 28A, no frequency aggregation, LTE cat.4.

Cameras

The camera interface has been redesigned to make it simpler and more intuitive. Someone may like it, while others will miss the old performance.

The front camera is double, with a flash and is quite advanced, here are the characteristics of these modules: 13 and 5 megapixels (sensor - 1 / 3.06; 1/4; pixel size - 1.12 microns, 1.4 microns; aperture f / 2.0, f / 2.4; fixed focus ). The disadvantage is obvious and consists in the lack of autofocus, nevertheless, photos from an outstretched arm turn out to be pretty good.

Main camera 12 megapixels, dual-tone flash, sensor - 1 / 2.8, pixel size - 1.25 microns, PDAF, video recording 1080p (30 frames per second). Here I cannot say that I am delighted with the quality of the pictures, they turn out to be quite typical, average in quality. Very often the scene is processed incorrectly, there is no backlight compensation, the white balance is wobbly. In short, this camera is not for those who want to take quality photos. And, in principle, this is a problem for many manufacturers of this level. In the video, autofocus crawls, and the light correction in the composition is also not exposed. Take a look at the sample images and videos below.

Software

It's surprising that the flagship from Alcatel comes out on the 7th Android version, there is no information about the availability of the G8 for this device. During testing, an update arrived on the device with the correction of a small number of errors, but nothing else happened. I will not talk about the standard features of Android, you can read about them separately. Let's focus on the features of the device and its unusual sides.

There is a simplified mode in the menu, when the device displays large icons.

A feature of 2018 that all manufacturers are trying to implement is face unlocking. The setup does not raise any questions, the manufacturer claims that such unlocking is not as reliable as a fingerprint, but in practice it is difficult to jailbreak your device, so you don't have to worry about it. Face unlocking takes about a second, it is not too fast (the fingerprint sensor works much faster). This unlocking does not work in the dark.

In the settings there is a semi-transparent Joy key, with its help you can call up the carousel menu with quick access to functions and applications. The only downside is that the key is always visible on the screen and it can annoy someone. Also, the key can be assigned an imitation of touch buttons ("Home", "Back", "Open applications").

The device supports the creation of duplicate applications for communication, you can have two pairs of any messengers.

The Resource Management app is an easy way to see the volume occupied memory, how the battery works and what applications are eating it up. In the application manager, you can specify which of them will be allowed to start automatically, which will be in deep sleep and not consume resources. Everything is extremely convenient.

In the additional settings, there is a Super Cleaner option, which clears the cache on the phone, it is better not to get in here if you are not sure you know what it is for.

Additional applications include a voice recorder, compass, file manager, and the ability to create videos with screen content.

The built-in FM radio works only with a headset (at the exhibition they said that it could work without a headset, but this did not happen). All settings are typical.

From a musical point of view, the device is interesting in that it has an AW8737 amplifier, it makes the sound in headphones more powerful than in many devices of this level. But to say that it is very different is still impossible. It's about the same.

The Enjoy Now application offers a description of how to work with the device, plus various gifts (there have not been any so far, so I don’t know what it will be, but I guess that there are applications or some kind of subscription).

Impressions

This device has no complaints about the reception quality, everything is fine. The connection keeps confidently, the data transfer, albeit not the fastest, but without problems. I note that the GPS works well, I liked the device in terms of navigation, it quickly picks up the signal and correctly shows your position on the map (the built-in electronic compass provides additional advantages).

I liked the fact that this phone has a design, even if the materials used (plastic) are simple, the model looks nice. The screen is large, but not for everybody, you need to get used to it. Unfortunately, the quality of the main camera is average, there is nothing to brag about, which is typical for this price segment. Battery life is also not the strongest point of Alcatel 5, the model does not work very long, up to one day.

At a cost of 12,990 rubles, I would like to see NFC, but it is also absent, about Android 8 I would like to, but it is not. The bottom line is a device that is interesting for its 18x9 screen geometry, but for many users this is secondary, other aspects are more important to them.

In this price segment, the offer is huge today, you can choose from several dozen models, I will not list them all, I will note only those that are highly popular. For example, it may be old Xiaomi Redmi The Note 5A Prime has a Snapdragon 435 chipset, 3GB of RAM and a slightly better main camera. The screen is 5.5 inches, but not elongated in height, which is unlikely to be considered a disadvantage.

Fundamentally higher in the Honor 9 Lite class, it is on free sale at 14,990 rubles, but for Huawei club members a discount of one thousand rubles, which brings it closer to the described Alcatel 5. This device with an 18: 9 screen, is more energy efficient and powerful processor, it has a dual main camera. And the FullHD + screen resolution, in a word, this device is close in cost, but noticeably wins in terms of filling and perception. Glass body as on flagships - this is another plus, I really like it.

The outgoing nature is the Meizu M5 Note, but it is quite capable of competing with this device at a cost of 12,990 rubles. Exactly the same amount of memory, but MT6755 processor, longer battery life, 4000 mAh battery and a fingerprint sensor on the front panel. In short, you can take a closer look at him, although I would still choose something new. But this is a time-tested device, to which there are few complaints.

As you can see, the flagship from Alcatel falls into a segment where there is no end of supply, most manufacturers play here and the number of smartphones is great. Everyone can choose something to their liking, and it is very difficult to stop at one thing. The Alcatel 5's advantage can only be its design, all other characteristics are secondary for the mass consumer. The ideal price for this device is 11,000 rubles at the start of sales.

At the very beginning of the year, TCL, which produces smartphones under the Alcatel brand, announced a new series of devices. All models belonged to the budget and middle class. At the same time, the device with the maximum functionality was the Alcatel 5, made in a frameless design with a 5.7-inch screen, a fingerprint scanner and a camera with face recognition.

In the line of the brand's devices, the Alcatel 5 smartphone takes the place of the flagship. It is clear that you cannot compare it with the real flagships of other manufacturers. Of the features, it is worth noting the original plastic case, a fingerprint scanner and a face recognition function. The screen of this model has an 18: 9 ratio, HD + resolution.

The hardware uses a Mediatek MT6750 chip with a clock speed of 1.5 GHz. Memory - 32 GB for data storage and 3 GB of RAM. 3000 mAh battery, yes USB Type-C and fast charging function. Operating system - Android Nougat. The Alcatel 5 is available in two color options: metallic black and metallic gold.

Alcatel 5 also uses a main single camera (12 megapixels) and a dual front camera, in which the main module of 13 megapixels is combined with a wide-angle (120 degrees) 5 megapixel, which is useful for group selfies.

It remains to evaluate the work of the novelty in business and understand whether it is worth the money.

Package contents and first impressions

id = "sub1">

The Alcatel 5 smartphone comes in a box made of white hard cardboard with blue inserts on the sides. The front side of the package has an image of the model and the name. In addition to the smartphone itself, the package contains a cable for synchronization and charging with USB connector Type C, headphones with a 3.5 mm jack, an adapter for an electrical outlet with support for fast charging (current 2 A), a clip for opening the SIM card tray, instructions and a warranty card.

First impressions after unpacking the smartphone - it is very compact against the background of recent devices. Its dimensions are 152.3x71.1x8.45 mm, and its weight is 144 grams. In terms of dimensions, the phone is similar to models with a 5 "screen, but it has a 5.7" display. This is achieved by reducing the edges on the sides and bottom. So, on the left and right, the frames reach only 2 mm, from the bottom - 4 mm, from the top - about 10 mm. Due to this, the usable surface area on the front of the apparatus has increased.

The Alcatel 5 feels surprisingly comfortable in the hand. He's more grasping or something. It is convenient to hold the smartphone. This is largely due to the aspect ratio - the phone is stretched in length. Therefore, the width of the device is about 71 mm. The device is not felt in the pocket of clothes and is placed extremely conveniently. The phone can be carried even in skinny jeans.

You can buy Alcatel 5 in two body colors: black metallic and golden metallic. We had a golden apparatus on the test. It looks very organic.

Design and appearance

id = "sub2">

The appearance of the novelty is very interesting. It is somewhat similar to the design style from Sony. Most importantly, the gadget stands out from dozens of similar models. The Alcatel 5's case is made with metal spraying, but it is made of plastic. At the presentation of the device, Alcatel's chief designer boasted that they managed to achieve the feeling of more expensive thing than it really is. In reality, this is not entirely true. The phone looks really original, but it is not perceived as an expensive thing quite definitely. The smartphone is very light and feels rather flimsy.

During the two-week test, some abrasions and traces of use appeared on the case. At the same time, the solidity of the structure remained at the same level. No creaks, no gaps. The build is good.

The screen of the smartphone is widescreen with a ratio of 18: 9, diagonal of 5.7 inches. A speaker for phone calls is placed above the screen. Left and right - a dual front camera with modules of 13 and 5 megapixels. Here you can also see the proximity sensor, the light sensor, and also the LED indicator. Depending on the occurrence of certain events, it starts to glow. The speaker volume is enough to communicate in a noisy room or on the road.

There are no buttons or sensors under the screen. Function Keys fully integrated into the screen shell android 7.

The power button (has a relief pattern) and the screen lock is located on the right side. They are quite thin, but they do their job properly. Hands felt well.

On the left side there is a tray for two nanoSIM-size SIM cards, one of which can also be used for a microSD memory card if the built-in 32 GB is not enough for you. You can open the compartment using a paper clip from the kit, or using the usual paper clip... The tray itself is plastic and requires care so as not to break it.

The top end houses the usual 3.5 mm jack for wired headphones and a microphone for noise cancellation during telephone conversation... On the lower edge on the right there are speaker holes for external calls and music, as well as a microphone. In the center you can see USB connector Type C. It is used for charging and connecting to a computer.

The sound quality and volume of the main speaker are at a fairly high level. The sound is powerful and bright, although the detail is not the best quality. However, the tunes do not wheeze or hiss. Covering the speaker with your hand or finger will decrease the volume.

On the back is the main 12 Mpix camera unit. The module protrudes 1 mm relative to the surface of the case. The camera takes pictures with autofocus, there is an LED flash.

A fingerprint scanner is located just below the camera block. It is round in shape. You can use it to unlock your device. The scanner, by the way, not only unlocks the screen, but can also duplicate the shutter button in selfie mode, or can be programmed to launch any application.

The fingerprint sensor itself works quickly. During testing, he accurately recognized my prints and did not react to strangers. In total, you can store up to five prints in the device's memory.

Screen. Graphics capabilities

id = "sub3">

The screen in the Alcatel 5 has a diagonal of 5.7 inches. HD + (720x1440) resolution, 18: 9 aspect ratio. This is an almost ideal combination for those who value compactness. By increasing the usable area and thin frames.

The picture on the display looks good. The viewing angles are decent. However, the image may not always be readable in direct sunlight. The screen starts to glare. It should be noted that automatic brightness control does not always work correctly. For example, it lags a lot on the street, so the display often becomes unreadable, and you have to peer into it. The maximum backlight brightness is lower than on many devices, which does not cause problems indoors, but in the bright sun it already creates inconveniences. By turning the backlight to the maximum, you get a distinguishable picture.

It is also worth noting the ability to select a setting for the color temperature of the screen. If we talk about the sensitivity of the screen, then it reacts quickly to touch and recognizes gestures without any problems. In total, the device supports up to five simultaneous touches.

Hardware platform: processor, memory, speed

id = "sub4">

The speed of the smartphone is provided by the MediaTek MT6750 chip, which includes 4 Cortex A53 cores with a clock speed of up to 1.5 GHz and 4 Cortex A53 cores up to 1 GHz. The graphics coprocessor Mali-T860M2 is used here. RAM is 3 GB, and internal memory is 32 GB, of which about 23 GB is available to the user. You can expand this volume by using external microSD cards up to 32 GB.

The hardware of the Alcatel 5 copes with all the tasks. This is an average performance solution, there are no obvious failures or achievements in it, it is enough for the eyes for the interface and the operation of most applications.

Streaming YouTube videos, surfing the web, and instant messengers do not pose a major performance threat. Heavy games, on the other hand, can fill up RAM and processing power.

Communication capabilities

id = "sub5">

In terms of communication capabilities, the Alcatel 5 is a typical budget employee. There is support for single-band Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n (2.5 GHz), Bluetooth 4.2, USB Type-C, 3.5 mm headphone jack.

It is also interesting that the device received two ways biometric identification: usual - by fingerprint and the second - by the owner's facial features. The unlock function is available only when the screen is activated (on), but it works correctly, even in the dark.

Like all modern smartphones, Alcatel 5 received a slot for two nano-sized SIM cards. One connector is universal: you can insert either a SIM card or a memory card into it. The smartphone has one radio module. This means that when any activity occurs on one of the cards, for example, an incoming call, the other goes offline. A SIM card in any slot can work with 3G / 4G networks, however, only one of them can function at the same time in this mode. To change the assignments of the card slots, you do not need to change places - this can be done directly from the phone menu.

Smartphone supports everything modern networks communications: 2G / 3G and 4G on Russian frequencies (4G TDD LTE: Band 38/40 and 4G FDD LTE: Band 1/3/7/8/20), confidently receives the signal and does not lose it for no apparent reason. Testing of the 4G network of the operator MegaFon by Speedtest.Net produced about 30 Mbit / s. Talking on the phone is comfortable. The speaker has a good volume reserve, and the interlocutors did not complain about poor audibility during testing.

Additional communication means worth noting are GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou (standard cartography is built into the smartphone Google maps). The radius of navigation error during testing is about 1.5 meters, which is very small. The gadget does an excellent job of being a navigator.

Duration of work

id = "sub6">

Alcatel 5 received a 3000 mAh Li-Ion battery. In testing conditions, with the number of calls 30 minutes a day, browsing the Internet for about 1.5 hours through 4G, listening to an mp3 player through a headset for about 2.5 hours a day, the device worked for 28 hours with an average brightness of the display backlight. When watching a video, the gadget worked for a little less than 5 hours, in navigator mode - 3 hours. As a result, the device has to be charged once a day. If you use your smartphone for less intensive mode, then it will work for 1.5 days or even more.

From the standpoint of autonomy, the phone is a typical average. In the "Battery" section in the settings there are all the necessary functions: power saving mode, screen resolution selection, activity limitation background applications, detailed battery usage statistics and optimization tool.

From the supplied power adapter full charge takes about an hour. There is a "fast charging" mode (the adapter from the kit supports fast charging). Fast charging technology provides a 45% charge within 30 minutes.

User interface and operating system

id = "sub7">

Alcatel 5 runs on Android 7.0 Nougat operating system. The user can choose the effect when unlocking or moving between desktops, choose the style of icons, fonts, as well as the response to incoming call when you hold the phone to your ear. There is a translation function here in silent mode when turning the screen down; and tilting the phone to arrange the widgets. In general, there are a lot of little things that especially impressionable people should like.

In the settings there is a semi-transparent Joy key, with which you can call up a carousel menu with quick access to functions and applications. The only drawback of this solution is that the key is always visible on the screen, and it may annoy someone. Also, the key can be assigned an imitation of touch buttons ("Home", "Back", "Open applications").

Among the preinstalled applications are standard for the manufacturer: free Google programs, OfficeSuite, Opera Mini, WhatsApp, online Sberbank application, etc. it is worth noting the presence of an FM radio.

Camera. Photo and video capabilities

id = "sub8">

The device is equipped with a double front camera. It includes a 13 Mpix and 5 Mpix module (sensor - 1 / 3.06; 1/4; pixel size - 1.12 microns, 1.4 microns; aperture f / 2.0, f / 2.4; fixed focus). The downside of the camera is the lack of autofocus. However, selfies.

The main camera has a resolution of 12 megapixels, the sensor is 1 / 2.8, the pixel size is 1.25 microns, PDAF, video recording 1080p (30 frames per second). There is a two-tone flash. The quality of the images is average. Very often the scene is processed incorrectly, there is no backlight compensation, the white balance is wobbly. In short, this camera is not for those who want to take quality photos. And, in principle, this is a problem for many manufacturers of this level.

The Alcatel 5 can record video in maximum FullHD resolution at 30 fps with stereo sound (AVC, 17 Mbps). Stereo sound (AAC, 192 kbps, 48 kHz). The quality is not the best among similar devices. In the video, autofocus works with a creak, and the light correction in the composition is also not set.

Outcomes

id = "sub9">

The main features of Alcatel 5 are stylish appearance, wide-screen display, powerful chip and face recognition function. Another question is that the phone has a plastic case, the battery life is not as long as we would like, and the main camera does not always take excellent quality pictures. Pay attention to a large number of alternatives in the price segment of 10-15 thousand rubles, the choice of a new smartphone from Alcatel is not so obvious. However, it's worth taking a closer look at the device. At least hold in your hands and draw your own conclusions.

Among the alternatives to buying Alcatel 5, one can also note the Huawei Honor 7C with a price of 9,000 rubles, it is also worth looking at the Honor 7C Pro and Xiaomi Mi A1 for 13,000 rubles. The listed devices have a comparable and more efficient hardware, metal case and a comparable screen diagonal.

Alcatel 5 is an inexpensive smartphone by the standards of the modern Russian market of mobile devices, which, nevertheless, has now taken the place of the flagship in the Alcatel family. TCL, which owns this trademark, after acquiring the Blackberry brand, began to separate the products of these two brands away from each other, and Alcatel's products were assigned a lower price niche against the background of the premium Blackberry. Thus, unpretentious in many respects, but in some ways certainly interesting Alcatel 5 turned out to be quite available model, and today we will take a closer look at its technical capabilities.

Contents of delivery

The smartphone comes complete with a USB cable, a power adapter (5 V; 2 A), a wired stereo headset with headphones without pads and a key to eject cards. Paper documentation in Russian is available.

Appearance and usability

The case of Alcatel 5 is completely plastic, but we really liked the design: here is not the usual symmetrical beaten "remnant" with rounded edges, streamlined on all sides, but a certain prefabricated version, where the main part of the case looks like brushed metal, and the top and bottom ends are fixed panels made under chrome-plated metal.

The case tapers towards the side edges, in profile the smartphone seems to be quite thin, in the hand because of the sloping backrest and the small mass it lies perfectly, does not slip and does not collect fingerprints. Due to its light and narrow body, the smartphone fits into the pockets of clothes without problems. In general, in terms of ergonomics, the Alcatel 5 is a pleasure to handle.

There are no complaints about the quality of the materials and the assembly - everything is clearly adjusted, does not creak when compressed, the body is monolithic. The matte surface of the case is not slippery at all, but the case in the kit would still be useful. Chinese manufacturers like Oppo and Vivo, even Huawei has already been taught that it's easier to get a penny transparent case in the kit than to look for one for a rare model. It is sometimes simply unrealistic to do this, it will hardly be easy to find a cover for the hero of the review.

The only thing that spoils the impression of the finished stylish design is the corrugation of the ring around the camera. Why is this? Notches there are completely out of place, a smooth chrome bezel would look organic with end inserts, and so - neither this nor that.

The design of the rest of the elements, on the contrary, does not cause rejection: the area of the fingerprint scanner, for example, is designed exactly as it should, with a smooth polished ring, it looks great. The scanner is slightly recessed, its platform is conveniently placed under the index finger, it is easy to find by touch, it stands out tactilely well. There are no complaints about the work of the scanner, it works well, without errors in recognition.

The front panel under the glass is nicely decorated with a geometric pattern in the form of longitudinal lines, and this immediately enriched the image. All elements above the screen are arranged symmetrically, there is an event indicator - in general, sheer pleasure.

Special thanks for doing without the notorious "bangs", which are now copied from the design Apple iPhone X most manufacturers.

There are no touch-sensitive hardware buttons below the screen, so only a very narrow strip is left here empty space... Thank goodness, even though TCL doesn't add its own logo here, it really pisses off users.

The side keys are usually installed on one side edge. The buttons are narrow and harsh, but they differ tactilely.

Hybrid card slot: you can install two Nano-SIM cards or a memory card from one Nano-SIM. Hot swap of cards is supported.

The top has an auxiliary microphone hole and a 3.5mm audio output for headphones - hurray!

Wherein USB port presented at the bottom end with a modern and up-to-date Type-C connector, and this is so pleasing that one can even forgive its asymmetrical arrangement with respect to the longitudinal axis. Here, at the bottom end, the main speaker is brought out, as well as the spoken microphone.

In addition to the Metallic Gold, the Alcatel 5 is also available in Metallic Black, which looks even prettier and more austere. The smartphone did not receive moisture protection.

Screen

The Alcatel 5 is equipped with an IPS display covered with Asahi Dragontrail 2.5D protective glass. The 5.7 ″ screen is elongated, it has an aspect ratio of 18: 9 and a resolution of 1440 × 720, its physical dimensions are 65 × 130 mm. The bezel around the display is narrow: 3 mm at the sides, 7 mm at the bottom and 16 mm at the top.

It is possible to use automatic brightness adjustment based on the operation of the ambient light sensor. Multi-touch tests diagnose support for 5 simultaneous touches.

Detailed expertise using measuring instruments conducted the editor of the "Monitors" and "Projectors and TV" sections Alexey Kudryavtsev... Here is his expert opinion on the screen of the test sample.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are no worse than those of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the turned off screens (on the left - Nexus 7, on the right - Alcatel 5, then they can be distinguished by their size):

The screen of the Alcatel 5 is slightly darker (brightness in the photos is 119 versus 122 for the Nexus 7). The doubling of reflected objects in the Alcatel 5 screen is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen (more specifically, between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix) (OGS type screen - One Glass Solution). Due to the smaller number of boundaries (such as glass / air) with strongly differing refractive indices, such screens look better in conditions of strong external illumination, but their repair in the case of cracked outer glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be changed. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (slightly better in efficiency than that of the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are much easier to remove, and appear at a slower rate than in the case of ordinary glass.

With manual brightness control and when displaying a white field full screen maximum value brightness was about 480 cd / m², minimum - 15 cd / m². The maximum brightness is high, and given the excellent anti-glare properties, readability on a sunny day outdoors could be good, but the dynamic adjustment of the backlight brightness spoils everything (see below). In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable value. In the presence of automatic brightness control by the light sensor (it is located in the upper right corner on the front panel). In automatic mode, when the ambient light conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. This function depends on the position of the brightness adjustment slider. If it is 100%, then in complete darkness, the auto-brightness function reduces the brightness to 50 cd / m2 (a little bright, but acceptable), in an office illuminated with artificial light (about 550 lux) it sets to 230 cd / m2 (normal), in a very in bright surroundings (corresponds to bright daylight outdoors, but no direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or slightly more), the brightness rises to 480 cd / m² (to the maximum, which is required). If the slider is about 50%, then the values are as follows: 15, 95 and 480 cd / m2 (the second value is low, but generally ok), and if the slider is at 0%, then the values are 6, 20 and 480 cd / m2 (the first and second values underestimated). We were more satisfied with the option with the slider by about 75% - 20, 160 and 480 cd / m². It turns out that the automatic brightness control function works adequately and allows the user to customize his work for individual requirements. At any brightness level, there is no significant backlight modulation, so there is no screen flickering either.

V this smartphone a matrix of the IPS type is used. The micrographs show the typical IPS subpixel structure:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of photomicrographs of screens used in mobile technology.

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift even with large gaze deviations from perpendicular to the screen and without tint inversion. For comparison, we present photographs in which the same images are displayed on the screens of Alcatel 5 and Nexus 7, while the brightness of the screens was initially set to about 200 cd / m2, and the color balance on the camera was forcedly switched to 6500 K.

White field perpendicular to screens:

Note the good uniformity of brightness and color tone of the white field.

And the test picture:

The color balance of the screens is clearly different, the color saturation is normal, the picture of the Alcatel 5 is clearly darkened.

Now at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors did not change much on both screens, but in the Alcatel 5 the contrast decreased to a large extent due to the strong black lightening.

And white box:

The brightness at an angle of the screens decreased (at least 5 times, based on the difference in exposure), but the Alcatel 5's screen at this angle is slightly lighter. When deviated diagonally, the black field is lightened strongly and acquires a bluish tint. The photos below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in perpendicular to the plane the direction of the screens is the same!):

And from a different angle:

With a perpendicular view, the uniformity of the black field is average:

The contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is high - about 1200: 1. The response time for the transition black-white-black is 21 ms (11 ms on + 10 ms off). The transition between gray tones of 25% and 75% (based on the numerical value of the color) and back takes 35 ms in total. The gamma curve, plotted using 32 points at equal intervals in terms of the numerical value of the shade of gray, did not reveal a blockage in either the highlights or the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.20, which is equal to the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the real gamma curve deviates little from the power dependence:

This device has an aggressive dynamic adjustment of the backlight brightness in accordance with the nature of the displayed image - in dark images in the middle, the backlight brightness is greatly reduced. As a result, the obtained dependence of brightness on hue (gamma curve) does not correspond to the gamma curve static image, since the measurements were carried out with sequential output of shades of gray almost on the entire screen. For this reason, a number of tests - determining the contrast and response time, comparing black illumination at angles - we carried out (however, as always) when displaying special templates with a constant average brightness, and not single-color fields across the entire screen. In general, such a non-switchable brightness correction does nothing but harm, since a constant change in screen brightness can at least cause some discomfort, reduce the visibility of gradations in the shadows in the case of dark images and the readability of the screen in bright light, since the brightness of the backlight is underestimated in not the lightest average images ...

The color gamut is close to sRGB:

The spectra show that the matrix filters mix the components together to a moderate extent:

As a result, colors have a natural saturation. The balance of shades on the gray scale is medium, since the color temperature is significantly higher than the standard 6500 K, but the deviation from the spectrum of a black body (ΔE) is below 10, which is considered an acceptable indicator for a consumer device (data signed as Without corr. on the graphs below). At the same time, the color temperature changes little from shade to shade - this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of the color balance. (The darkest areas of the grayscale can be ignored, since there is no color balance. of great importance, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

This device has a fairly advanced system of profiles and settings, supposedly providing the ability to adjust the color balance, etc. It is called MiraVision. You can try to correct the color balance (more specifically, to lower the color temperature) in three places. On the page Colorful temperature in MiraVision:

In the screen settings (parameter Colorful temperature):

And on the page EYE PROTECTION at MiraVision. Recall that, in principle, bright light can lead to a violation of the daily (circadian) rhythm (see article about), but this problem is solved by adjusting the brightness to a comfortable level, and there is absolutely no point in distorting the color balance by reducing the contribution of blue.

Moreover, only the last option works normally, for the first two 6500 K does not fall into the range. The result is data signed as Corr. in the graphs above. As a result, we adjusted the color temperature, and ΔE decreased slightly on average. At the same time, the maximum brightness dropped to 400 cd / m².

To summarize: formally, the screen has a high maximum brightness and has excellent anti-glare properties, so the device can somehow be used outdoors even on a sunny summer day. For conditions of complete darkness, you can set a comfortable level of brightness. The mode with automatic brightness adjustment works adequately. The advantages of the screen include the absence of an air gap in the layers of the screen and flicker, effective oleophobic coating, high contrast, as well as sRGB color gamut and close to standard color balance (after correction). The significant disadvantages include low stability of black to deviation of the gaze from the perpendicular to the plane of the screen and aggressive dynamic adjustment of the backlight brightness in accordance with the nature of the displayed image. In general, the screen quality is conditionally slightly above average.

The front camera in the Alcatel 5 is advanced, there is a dual module with a resolution of 13 and 5 megapixel sensors, the lenses have a maximum aperture of f / 2.0 and f / 2.4. There is even its own LED flash, but there is no autofocus. You can apply a "beautifier" to the pictures, the difference is visible in the test pictures. The last one goes A photo taken in the mode for group selfies is selected in the menu separately; there is no shortcut button for it on the viewfinder screen. But the camera automatically switches to group mode, detecting the presence of three or more human faces in the frame.

The quality in terms of detail and color reproduction of the main front-facing camera is quite passable, especially given the abundance of green in the frame. The camera handled all of this well, and even the white balance was set correctly. There are also no special complaints about the sharpness of the frame. The camera is very good for its level, this is one of the strong points of the Alcatel 5 smartphone, but it still lacks autofocus. The wide-angle module, designed for creating group selfies, shoots worse, as expected, you shouldn't switch to this shooting mode unnecessarily.

But the main camera is unremarkable, although in good lighting it produces pictures of quite bearable quality in terms of detail and sharpness. She received a sensor with a resolution of 12 megapixels and a lens with an aperture of f / 2.2. The control menu is chaotic: here you can't even get to the settings in the video mode, you have to switch to taking photos every time. Naturally, there is no standard possibility of saving images in RAW either.

Sample photos for the main camera:

The quality of the pictures is surprisingly decent even in dim lighting, and on a sunny summer day, the frames do not require any correction at all, they can be viewed in full size. Perhaps all the pictures lack sharpness a little, ringing you definitely can't name it here - perhaps this is a consequence of the noise reduction. But for its intended purpose, the noise reduction works perfectly. In general, for a smartphone with a price of 13 thousand rubles, such cameras are a real godsend.

The camera can shoot video in maximum resolution 1080p at 30 fps, there are no more advanced modes. Optical stabilization also no. In general, the camera copes well with video shooting, but nothing more. Sharpness is normal, there are no special complaints about the color rendition, but the detail is low. V sound accompaniment you can notice slight distortions, the sound is not recorded here of the best quality.

Telephone part and communications

Alcatel 5 has support LTE networks Cat.4 (data rate 150/50 Mbps). The smartphone, depending on the region, can support six LTE FDD frequency bands, including three used in Russia (Band 3, 7, 20). In the network of the Beeline operator within the city limits, the device is registered quickly, but high speeds even in 4G does not show.

Only one Wi-Fi band (2.4 GHz) is supported, there is also Bluetooth 4.2, but the NFC module is missing, which is sad.

The navigation module works with GPS (with A-GPS) and with domestic Glonass but without the Chinese Beidou. The first satellites on a cold start are detected within the first minute. Magnetic compass, necessary for navigation programs, they did not forget to install in the smartphone, it pleases.

Phone app supports Smart Dial, that is, when dialing a phone number, a search is immediately carried out by the first letters in contacts. The methods for sorting and displaying contacts are standard for the Android interface.

The platform supports active waiting for both SIM cards in 3G / 4G at the same time. That is, the SIM card can be actively waiting in the 3G / 4G network, and not only in 2G, even if another card is assigned for data transfer in 4G. The cards work in Dual SIM Dual Standby mode, there is only one radio modem here.

Software and multimedia

Alcatel 5 uses the OS as a software platform Android already not the most recent version 7.0 with its own shell and the ability to update over the air (OTA). There is support for gestures, a virtual on-screen multifunction button. There is a cloning mode for applications to work with different accounts in social networks. Kit useful utilities includes a voice recorder, compass, FM-radio, there is a file manager, a store of custom themes and a familiar phone manager that carries out comprehensive monitoring of the system.

The ability to recognize a face to unlock a smartphone has been implemented, and it works perfectly - in any conditions, without errors. It is officially reported that the front camera supports 106-point face recognition.

In terms of sound, the Alcatel 5 demonstrates nothing special, the sound is quite simple through the loudspeaker, the sound is clearly better in the headphones, but still this is not a solution for music lovers. The sound is thick and pleasant, but for some reason there is not enough volume headroom. In the settings there is a five-band equalizer with presets. There is a built-in FM radio.

Performance

Alcatel 5 uses MediaTek MT6750 SoC as its hardware platform. This 28nm SoC is configured with an eight-core processor, 4x ARM Cortex-A53 cores running at 1.5GHz, and another 4 at 1GHz. A dual-core Mali-T860 (MP2) video accelerator with a frequency of 520 MHz is responsible for graphics processing. The RAM is 3 GB and the built-in flash memory is 32 GB. Of these, about 23 GB are free.

It is possible to expand the memory by installing microSD cards, and you can install applications on the memory card. The system offers, among other things, to format the card as an internal storage. You can also connect external flash drives in USB OTG mode.

MediaTek MT6750 is a weak platform by today's standards. It is manufactured using an outdated 28nm process technology, uneconomical, designed for smartphones entry level... It is pointless to expect high results from it, all tests clearly demonstrate this, and releasing a smartphone on it in 2018 is nonsense.

The platform's capabilities are still sufficient for basic needs and tasks, but this is clearly not a game solution, such demanding games as Injustice 2 slow down. And such a smartphone certainly does not have a performance margin for the future.

Testing in complex AnTuTu tests and GeekBench:

All the results obtained by us when testing the smartphone in the latest versions of popular benchmarks, we have summarized in tables for convenience. Several other devices from different segments are usually added to the table, also tested on similar latest versions of benchmarks (this is done only for a visual assessment of the obtained dry numbers). Unfortunately, within the framework of one comparison, it is impossible to present the results from different versions benchmarks, so many worthy and current models- due to the fact that at one time they passed the "obstacle course" on previous versions test programs.

Browser cross-platform tests:

As for benchmarks for evaluating the speed of a javascript engine, you should always make allowances for the fact that the results in them significantly depend on the browser in which they are launched, so that the comparison can be truly correct only on the same OS and browsers, and this possibility is available when testing not always. In the case of Android OS, we always try to use Google Chrome.

AndroBench memory speed test results:

Heat images

Below is a thermal image back surface obtained after 10 minutes of running the battery test in the GFXBenchmark program:

Heating is more localized in the upper right part of the device, which, apparently, corresponds to the location of the SoC chip. According to the heat chamber, the maximum heating was 41 degrees (at an ambient temperature of 24 degrees), this is the average heating in this test for modern smartphones.

Video playback

For testing "omnivorous" when playing video (including support for various codecs, containers and special features subtitles) We used the most common formats that make up the bulk of the content available on the Web. Note that it is important for mobile devices to have support for hardware video decoding at the chip level, since it is often impossible to process modern versions using processor cores alone. Also, do not expect a mobile device to decode everything, since the leadership in flexibility belongs to the PC, and no one is going to challenge it. All results are tabulated.

Further video playback testing was done by Alexey Kudryavtsev.

This unit, apparently, does not support DisplayPort Alt Mode for USB Type-C - output image and sound to external device when connected to a USB port - which was ascertained with the help of (the company). Therefore, we had to confine ourselves to testing the output of video files on the screen of the device itself. For this we used a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see ""). Screenshots with an exposure of 1 s helped to determine the nature of the frame output of video files with various parameters: the resolution varied (1280 by 720 (720p), 1920 by 1080 (1080p) and 3840 by 2160 (4K) pixels) and the frame rate (24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 fps). In our tests, we used the MX Player video player in the "Hardware" mode. The test results are tabulated: no

Okay No

Note: If both columns Uniformity and Skips exhibited green estimates, this means that, most likely, when watching films, artifacts caused by uneven alternation and skipping of frames will either not be seen at all, or their number and visibility will not affect the viewing comfort. Red marks indicate possible problems related to the playback of the respective files.

According to the criterion for outputting frames, the quality of video playback on the screen of the smartphone itself is good, since in most cases frames (or groups of frames) can (but are not required) to be displayed with a more or less uniform alternation of intervals and without frame drops. The screen has a refresh rate of 61 Hz, so 60 fps files are not perfectly smooth. When playing video files with a resolution of 1280 by 720 pixels (720p) on a smartphone screen, the image of the video file itself is displayed exactly at the height of the screen (in landscape orientation), one to one pixel by pixel, that is, in the original resolution. The luminance range displayed on the screen corresponds to the actual range in this file.

Battery life

Non-removable accumulator battery installed in the Alcatel 5 has a capacity of 3000 mAh. This is not much, especially considering the outdated SoC, which is devouring battery power at a tremendous rate. V real life the device, depending on the scenario of use, will last half a day or a day, until the evening charge is maximum.

Testing has traditionally been conducted at typical power consumption levels without using power saving features.

Battery capacity Reading mode Video mode 3D Game Mode
Alcatel 5 3000 mAh 15h 15m 7h 00m 3h 50m
Vivo v9 3260 mAh 20 h 00 m 10h 00m 6h 00m

Honor 9 lite 3000 mAh 21h 20m 11h 10m 4h 40m

Continuous reading in the Moon + Reader program (with a standard, light theme) at a minimum comfortable brightness level (the brightness was set to 100 cd / m2) with auto-scrolling lasted about 15 hours until the battery was fully discharged, and with continuous viewing of high quality video (720p) with the same brightness level through home network The Wi-Fi device operates for only 7 hours. In 3D games mode, the smartphone can work up to 4 hours, depending on the specific game.

The smartphone does not support fast charging, it charges from its own power adapter for 2 hours 15 minutes with a current of 1.9 A at a voltage of 5 V. Wireless charging the smartphone does not support either.

Outcome

Poor technical equipment is compensated for in Alcatel 5 by an attractive design and fashionable screen geometry with an elongated 18: 9 aspect ratio. However, the design and surprisingly good cameras strengths the hero of the review, perhaps, and are exhausted. Screen quality, sound, communication capabilities, autonomy - everything is at a satisfactory level, nothing more. The installation of an outdated SoC is frankly frustrating, and the lack of NFC for many now can be a decisive factor against buying, especially considering how high the competition is in this price segment. By the way, about the price: in the official Russian retail they ask for 13 thousand rubles for the Alcatel 5, and this is clearly an overpriced for a device with simple characteristics on a backward platform, albeit in a very attractive shell. Throwing off a couple of thousand for this smartphone is simply necessary - fortunately, this device can actually be purchased for 11 thousand rubles, you just need to look carefully.
