Shadow Settings Background Shading and Anti-Aliasing Modes Particles, Fog, Reflections, Intrinsic Diffusion Filtering, Parallax, Detail, Lens Effects One Page

We're back to Tom Clancy's The Division again. After benchmarking video cards and exploring the features graphic technologies NVIDIA GameWorks let's talk in more detail about graphics settings, the effect of certain parameters on graphics quality and performance.

Tom Clancy's game The division pleases players with a beautiful detailed picture. To enjoy it, you need a powerful modern graphics card... If your PC's capabilities are limited, then you will have to downgrade the quality of the graphics. This article will serve as a guide for those who want to achieve optimal ratio between graphics quality and performance. We will examine the impact of each individual parameter on the picture and performance. Some settings items have a minimal effect on general impressions, the change in others immediately makes itself felt. All these nuances will be revealed through a visual comparison of different modes and passing performance testing.

This guide will be useful not only for those who are forced to downgrade the quality. The game allows you to increase some parameters above the proposed profile maximum quality and the article will show you what benefits you will get from it.

Tom Clancy's The Division uses the Snowdrop Engine and works in the DirectX 11 environment. Since we are interested in identifying the main trends and the impact of parameters on mid-range and lower-end video cards, we chose the model GeForce GTX 960. With Ultra quality, its performance is lower than the acceptable level, so those frequencies for testing were increased to 1500/8000 MHz (core / memory). Other characteristics test computer are described below.

Test stand

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-3930K @ 4.4 GHz
  • motherboard: ASUS Rampage IV Formula
  • video card: GeForce GTX 960 2GB OC (1336-1500 / 8000 MHz)
  • memory: Kingston KHX2133C11D3K4 / 16GX, 1866 MHz, 4x4 GB
  • HDD: Hitachi HDS721010CLA332, 1 TB
  • power supply: Seasonic SS-750KM
  • operating system: Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64
  • driver: NVIDIA GeForce 364.51

Testing was carried out in the built-in benchmark. It was launched 6-7 times for each mode. The game has problems with adequate frame rate counting. Therefore, it was decided to run the test in Fraps for 95 seconds in parallel with the benchmark.

The test creates a serious load, which allows you to evaluate real performance in heavy graphic scenes. The minimum fps achieves such low values that in real game very rare. So, when comparing the results, we focus on the average frame rate (in the diagrams on the right), and the minimum frame rate (on the left) is estimated secondarily.

It is based on the maximum quality profile (Ultra) at a resolution of 1920x1080. Additionally, vertical sync is disabled, no edits have been made anymore.

Further, the procedure is as follows: we take one setting parameter and change it without touching the others. Exploring the settings will proceed in the order in which they appear in the settings section of the menu, but some of the options are grouped together.

Let's ignore the point of vertical synchronization - its meaning is clear to all experienced players. The purpose of the frame limit is also clear from the name.

Shadow quality (ShadowQuality)

The first parameter, which is related to the shadow settings. Affects the quality of all shadows cast by objects. The game provides two levels of quality - low and high. Large images available on click.

You can see from the two images that the shadow detailing in both modes is identical, but at high quality there is a slight softening of the contours. Also, with low quality close up, it is noticeable that the shadows consist of separate segments.

At low quality, shadows look too unnatural and cut the eye with such clear (and slightly ragged) contours. Best effect switches to NVIDIA PCSS or NVIDIA HFTS shadow algorithm. These two methods make it possible to achieve realistic effect soft shadows in diffused sunlight, not only blurring the edges of shadows, but also intensifying this effect as the distance from the object casts them increases. Compare the top screenshot with the shadows in HFTS mode:

NVIDIA HFTS delivers smooth blur, with the tree shadow on the left being darker towards the base and lighter towards the top. The shadows from the branches disappear altogether, but this is quite consistent with the real picture that we see on a sunny day. More details about the features of NVIDIA PCSS or NVIDIA HFTS shadows are described in our separate article, where there are many additional visual materials. Note that soft shadows only work in sunlight. In the rays of the lanterns, you will receive clear contours as with normal mode shadows, and with an active algorithm from NVIDIA.

Let's make another comparison of the two main modes at night under the light of a flashlight.

In this example, the super-crisp shadows look even more unnatural, although they show the correct outlines. The denticles on the edges of such shadows are clearly visible.

Let's complete a visual comparison and see the performance in different modes shadows.

There is very little difference in performance between low and high quality shadows. So lowering this parameter has no practical sense. If we talk about the choice of higher quality shadow modes, then PCSS is given with losses of about 11%, and HFTS with losses of about 18% in comparison with high quality.

You can also take a look at the already mentioned NVIDIA shadow review, where the test results of top-end video cards are given.

Shadow Resolution (ShadowResolution)

This parameter affects the resolution of the shadows cast from the sun or moon. Changing the parameter directly affects the detail of the shadows. This comparison will show below. Please note that due to the movement of the sun, the angle of inclination of the shadows changes, so we ignore this fact when evaluating.

With a decrease in resolution, the segmentation of shadows increases, they become more blurry and inaccurate. When switching from high to medium resolution, the edge of the shadow from the obstacle (the left side of the frame) is overgrown with a "comb". To varying degrees, you will often see it around the edges of large shadows. Lung effect blur due to high quality shadows partially compensates for this, with low quality the imperfections will be more visible. In the very simple mode we see the superposition of shapeless spots on the surface of the tent at the top and a blurred spot in the form of a shadow from the hero.

Shadow resolution has no effect when NVIDIA PCSS or NVIDIA HFTS shadow mode is selected. These techniques involve the calculation of shadows according to their own algorithms.

Shadow resolution affects performance more than the choice between high / low quality... But even here we have a difference of only a few percent between the regimes. In the simplest mode, a slight increase in the minimum fps is observed - it makes no sense to voice the exact values here, since the final data have some scatter, we can only talk about a general trend.

Lowering the resolution provides some benefit, but does not provide a major performance boost. Also, we would not recommend combining this parameter with low quality shadows, except in case of despair when you have to play on a very weak video card.

The number of local shadows (SpotShadowcount)

Adjusts the amount of shadows displayed from point light sources such as lanterns, spotlights, and other artificial light sources. Naturally, there are most of these shadows at night, when artificial lighting is on. Other shadows displayed at night are moon shadows. You can see them in clear weather, when they make their slow revolution around large buildings, in accordance with the movement of the star. Blending shadows from different sources make the picture more realistic.

Let's see how one scene changes when the number of local shadows is gradually reduced.

The transition from High to Medium is given without noticeable changes. They are, if you look closely at distant objects. Pay attention to the area around the helicopter. The background behind the supports brightens slightly at medium level. In the center of the frame is a booth, to the right of which you can see a large tent behind a fence. Its far edge also loses its shadow. The transition to the Low-level is more obvious: the shadows on the group of boxes disappear, the shadows from the same boxes in the booth area, shadows on the snowdrifts and supports of the helipad disappear on the left side of the frame, a similar effect is noticeable on the tent behind the trees in the center of the frame. It is worth noting that the boxes are turned towards us with their unlit side, so the first screenshots look more natural. Similarly, and dark side snow drifts or the shadow of the boxes on the booth give a sense of directional light.

There is little performance difference between high and low, almost none. Although we can note a slight positive trend in the change in the minimum fps. So the decline this parameter one step can be of some benefit, especially since some distant shadows disappear and it is faintly noticeable. But with a low number of local shadows, changes are visible at close distances, and the impact on performance is already more than 6%.

Local Shadow Resolution (SpotShadowResolution)

This item of settings adjusts the quality of detail of local shadows from artificial light sources. The lower comparison will show how the shadow changes as the resolution is gradually reduced.

As the parameter decreases, the shadows from the trees lose their integrity and clarity of the contours. When moving from maximum resolution to a high effect, you can also describe it as a stronger blur. The rest of the levels give too implicit outlines. Note that the negative effect partially obscures the blur, which provides high quality shadows. If the quality of the shadows were low, the clear edges of individual large segments would be visible.

The benchmarks simulate a daytime scene, but local shadows still affect performance. Decreasing their resolution one step gives an acceleration of 4%. Further changes have almost no effect on the average frame rate, but there is a positive trend towards an increase in the minimum fps. So changing this parameter to improve performance makes sense, especially when combined with the number of local shadows. But we strongly advise against choosing the lowest resolution, even on weak video cards.

Contact shadows (ContactShadows)

An interesting point, the influence of which is rather difficult to identify. Adds shadows where objects touch. The game offers several levels of quality: the simplest calculates such shadows only in places where sunlight is obstructed, more high levels qualities take into account any lighting. It is also available to completely disable contact shadows.

It is problematic to make a comparison in the sunny time of the day because of the gradual change in the position of the sun and the change in the angle of inclination of shadows and illumination. It is problematic to single out individual details in such a situation. Therefore, we will give two screenshots at the extreme positions of quality and artificial lighting. Initially, all contact shadows are on, then off.

The difference between the images is clearly visible. Contact shadows allow you to additionally indicate where objects meet, making them stand out better. different elements car, shadows appear between the folds of clothes, there is a shadow from debris on the ground and even a slight shadow at the base of snow piles. Trash with shadows fits better into the overall scene, the jacket and the car also look more natural. Is that the contour eyeliner of the snow gives a controversial effect. The same contour shadows are visible in the signage elements at the top. Changes in glare on glasses may be due to easy change the position of the evening sun, the quality of the shadows should not affect this.

Contact shadows improve the overall perception. Intermediate values will give a kind of middle variant between the two upper images.

Downgrading the quality of contact shadows from high to low level, as well as the inclusion of shadows only from the sun, give a meager acceleration. Though last option also reveals a positive trend for the growth of the minimum fps, so such a change in the parameter on insufficiently productive video cards is justified. Disabling such shadows completely gives a slightly greater effect for increasing performance, but also barely noticeable against the general background.

Reduce all in-game graphics settings to a minimum

Though this item and is obvious to many players, there are still individuals who complain about poor performance games, while having the highest graphics settings in the game.

Reduce the graphics settings of your graphics card

For NVIDIA graphics cards you need to go to the "panel NVIDIA control"(usually clicking right click on the desktop) and in the "Adjust image settings" tab move the slider to the "Performance" state.

For AMD graphics cards it is recommended to use free utility RadeonPro, which can be downloaded from this link: http://www.radeonpro.info/

The video card is one of the main components on which the FPS depends.
Now I will show you how to set up an NVIDIA graphics card.

First, let's figure out the power supply:

Control Panel - Power Options - Sleep Mode Setting - Change Extra options food - PCI Express- Communication Status Power Management - Value: Off.

Next, open the NVIDIA Control Panel, and in the "3D Settings" list, select "Manage 3D Settings", select The Division and specify these settings:
Anisotropic Filtering: OFF
Vertical sync pulse: OFF
Background Light Shading: OFF
Maximum number of pre-trained personnel: 4
Streaming Optimization: ON (If multiple processors)
Power management mode: Maximum performance mode preferred
Anti-Aliasing - Gamma Correction: OFF
Anti-Aliasing - Transparency: OFF
Triple buffering: OFF
Texture Filtering - Anisotropic Sampling Optimization: OFF
Texture Filtering - Quality: High Performance
Filtering textures - negative deviation of UD: Snap
Texture Filtering - Trilinear Optimization: OFF

Disable antivirus and background programs

Almost all antivirus systems and many programs running in background cause an increased load on the processor, thereby lowering the FPS in the game. It is recommended to disable programs like browsers (Chrome, Firefox) and temporarily disable the antivirus to improve game performance.

System speed

At this stage, everything is simple. Go to "My Computer", then "Properties", "Additional System Parameters", "Performance", below "Parameters" and select the column "Provide best performance"

Permission

It is better to set the resolution small. The higher the resolution, the lower the fps.

If it doesn't help

If all of the above did not help, and your FPS are jumping, then there may be problems with the OS or hardware.
Iron problems are most likely either RAM, or hard drive, or overheating. If we sin on the RAM, then it must be run through the memtest program. Hard - free up disk space, do defragmentation (I recommend O&O Defragmenter for the latter). It is better to deal with overheating in stages - first, clean it from dust system unit, replace the thermal grease on the processor, etc. Better to read articles on this case.

Solving the main problems with Tom Clancy's the Division

PROBLEMS THAT WERE IN BETA, maybe someone will have the same problems and have not been resolved after the release, here are a couple of tips that may possibly help you.

Mouse not working in The Division Beta

A common problem with beta testers for The Division is complete absence the operability of the mouse buttons in the game. Here are some tips to fix this problem:

If you are using a controller, disable it. The game will not allow you to use a mouse if you also have a gamepad connected.
If you are using a Razer mouse, disable Razer Synaps
Alt-tab to another process and back to The Division. Repeat every time your mouse keys stop working

The Division beta won't launch on PC

If you try to launch the game, but nothing happens, then try launching the game in compatibility mode for windows 7. To do this:

Right click and select properties
Go to the Compatibility tab
Check the box next to Run the program in compatibility mode for: and select from the drop-down Windows list 7?
Click "Apply"

Unable to open the chest in the Dark Zone

Some players have reported an issue with chests in the Dark Zone. When approaching the chests, there is no pop-up hint. You just can't interact with chests. The only thing you can do in this case is to restart the client. There is no other solution, but the developers are already aware of the problem.

Red screen at the spawn point

Another common problem. Red screen appears randomly after your character dies. You are reborn and you get the Soviet banner on the screen. The solution to the problem is to restart the client.

Beta The Division lags

If you're having performance issues with Tom Clancy's The Division, the following steps may help:

Turn off vertical sync
Use full screen mode instead of window
Update your graphics card driver (Yes, trivial advice, but suddenly you didn't)
After the revival, wait for a little loading of the world around you
Don't run in crowds in the Dark Zone

There are a lot of complaints about the fact that the iron is powerful, but at the same time, the game lags and freezes terribly. The fault is a little crooked port, from consoles to PC, great job on some components, on others of similar power it will slow down.
- Go into the game, minimize, then open the NVidia settings, there, among all the processes, find the Tom Clancy's The Division process. Further, in the second paragraph, find and select graphics processor"High-performance NVIDIA processor". Then, in the third paragraph, select "Vertical sync pulse" and put a tick on. save the settings and restart the game.
- Enable Anisotropic Filtering, in NVidia settings go to "Installation PhysX configurations", There select your graphics processor (video card).

How do I launch Tom Clancy's The Division in a window?

Sometimes after starting the game, graphical glitches or even a black screen appear. Will help fix this situation the key combination Alt + Enter or Alt + Esc, which will switch the game to windowed mode.

Tom Clancy's the Division crashes to the desktop

1) Turn off all additional software that you do not need during the game: players, browsers, antivirus, etc.
2) Lower the settings in the game to the minimum.
3) Increase the priority of the game process in the task manager to High
4) Launch the game using Game Prelauncher or Gamebooster memory-freeing programs
5) Turn on Vertical sync in the game settings (Vsync) and if the situation does not improve, then turn it off. This option is capable of both increasing the number of frames and decreasing it.
6) Use 64 bit OS for comfortable game into new games.

Tom Clancy's The Division no sound in the video, problem with sound

Update or reinstall your sound card drivers.

Unfortunately, this problem has not yet been resolved. And the most the main problem in that it can appear at any time and remain until the end of the game. Only a future patch will help, the developers are already working on it.

Tom Clancy's The Division black screen

1) Update or reinstall the drivers for the video card. How to update drivers can be found in this question
2) Start the game in a window, and if the game starts, put it in full screen mode by pressing ctrl + enter (however, it does not work with all games). Windowed mode can also be enabled in the game settings files or by setting the -w parameter in the launch parameters, but this also does not work in all games.
3) Run the game as administrator or in compatibility mode. Moreover, if this did not help you, try running the game simultaneously with compatibility mode and in windowed mode.
4) Disconnect the 2nd video card if available
5) Switch from the integrated video card to ATI / Nvidia if playing on a laptop
6) Uncheck the Read only checkbox for all game files. Right click on the game folder and select properties.

There is some kind of delta error:

Delete a program that will constantly enter a connection to the network, what kind of program is not clear, you need to find out this, or Yandex bars, all sorts of boosters, etc. was only similar situation when I could not open the properties of any file after uninstalling the yandex disk program everything worked. Try to delete the left programs, maybe hamachi are blocking you.

Request: If you had a bug and fixed it by deleting some program, write it on the wall in the manual so that I can narrow down the circle of suspected programs.

End

Hope your FPS has increased!
Thanks for reading of this material I hope I helped you.

Although this point is obvious to many players, there are still individuals who complain about the poor performance of the game, while having the highest graphics settings in the game.

What basically eats FPS

Vertical sync

Better to turn off little sense from it.

Volumetric Fog

Performance Impact: Medium (up to 9 FPS).
There is nothing unexpected here either - “Volumetric Fog” determines the sophistication of fog effects.

It is difficult to distinguish between "Ultra" and "High" values by eye, so in most cases "High" will suffice. And "Medium" will save a few extra frames with decent image quality.

Particle Detail

Performance Impact: Medium (up to 9 FPS).
Most of the dynamic special effects like smoke, explosions, sparks and the like in games are made up of particles. Particle quality is responsible for their quantity and resolution.

Particle Detail has quite abundant appetites, so it's worth turning it to the maximum only on a PC that meets the recommended system requirements.

Anti-aliasing post-effect

For a comfortable game, it is better to lower it.

Temporal AA

Performance Impact: None. Temporary Anti-Aliasing helps remove jagged edges on small objects as you move. Usually, the supersampling mode is on, but it is not very effective in static conditions (when the player's character is standing still), which sometimes interferes with admiring the views. For this case, you can turn on the stabilization mode. This setting does not affect performance.

Reflection Quality

Performance Impact: Low (0-1 FPS)
Everything should have been clear from the name here, but it is this setting that is responsible for the elaboration of reflections only on remote sites... Because of this, FPS is consumed at a minimum and the "Quality of Reflections" can be turned to the maximum.

Local Reflection Quality

Performance Impact: Medium (up to 8 FPS).
But here, much more objects from medium and close distances from the player's character are always involved, therefore, the frame consumption is much higher. We recommend turning on the “Low” value on low-power “machines” or turning it off altogether, and on the rest - very high.

Shadow Quality

Performance impact: high (up to 20 FPS). if it is directly important for you that the shadows are in the game, leave it if not, then turn off a couple of frames for you to add.

The Division uses two exclusive shadow technologies: Hybrid Frustum Traced Shadows (HFTS) and Percentage Closer Soft Shadows (PCSS). The first works only on GeForce video cards, and the second - on any.

In addition to these technologies, there is also a basic rendering of shadows. It is much less "greedy", so we recommend using it on weak or old systems (try the values "Low" or "High"). On mid-range PCs - HFTS (if available GeForce video cards) or "High". The owners powerful systems can afford to choose from HFTS or PCSS.

Shadow Resolution

Performance Impact: Medium (up to 5 FPS). When disabled, it adds a couple of frames.
This setting only needed for basic rendering of shadows. It makes shadows even clearer by increasing their resolution. It consumes resources quite moderately, so even on low-power PCs (but meeting the minimum system requirements), you can try to set the average value here. On the rest - high.

Spot Shadow Count and Spot Shadow Resolution

Performance Impact: Medium (up to 7 FPS). In The Division, in addition to "natural" light sources, such as the in-game Moon and the Sun, there are also artificial - backup spotlights. They light up areas of Manhattan where, according to the game, the electricity was turned off. It was them, as well as the lanterns, desk lamp and the like and affect the parameters "Number of local shadows" and "Resolution of local shadows".

These parameters, like most in the game, differ quite moderate consumption, so everything is simple here: on weak PCs, set the values lower, and on more powerful ones, higher.

Contact Shadows

Performance Impact: Medium (up to 7 FPS).

The "Contact Shadows" setting is analogous to "Background Shading" (about it - below), but for local light sources (spotlights, lanterns, lamps, etc.). There are as many as three values to choose from with obscure names (Sun Low, All Low and All High), as well as the possibility complete shutdown... All three methods create additional accents on the unevenness of embossed surfaces by carefully shading them, but each in its own way: the first is the roughest method, and the last is the softest.

Contact Shadows is far from the most noticeable and required parameter, therefore, on computers closer to the "minimum" it is better to turn it off completely, and on the rest of them turn on any value at will.

Sharpening

<1 FPS).
Some anti-aliasing modes make the image in the game a little more blurry than necessary. The Sharpness setting is the opposite of this. Here it is no longer possible to advise specific values - it all depends on the screen settings, the matrix itself and personal perception. Moreover, frames are practically not wasted here - experiment yourself!

Wind-Affected Snow

Performance Impact: Low (1 FPS)
This parameter makes the snowflakes bend around the corners of buildings under the influence of the wind, which gives realism to the weather effects. Only one frame per second is consumed, so you should turn it off only as a last resort.

Internal scattering (Sub-Surface Scattering)

Performance Impact: Low (2-3 FPS).
A rather controversial parameter that makes the characters' skin reflect, and not only absorb light (even the ears start to show through). As a result, the faces look slightly blurred and almost three frames are lost. On weak PCs it is better to turn it off, but on the rest - whatever you want.

Anisotropic Filtering

Performance Impact: Extremely low (up to 1 FPS).
Usually, those textures on the surfaces of objects that are located at an angle to the viewer look slightly blurry. To get rid of this effect, anisotropic filtering is applied.

This is one of the parameters, which does not make much sense to independently adjust: if you set trilinear filtering, then "soap" will appear, and if anisotropic 16x - no more than one frame will disappear. If every FPS is expensive, 4x is optimal for Full HD resolution.

Parallax Mapping

Performance Impact: Medium (3-5 FPS). "Parallactic Display" is an alternative to tessellation. It works in a similar way, making textures like brick walls or windows more embossed, but eats up much less resources.

Owners of weak PCs may not be able to afford the waste of 3 to 5 frames per second, but the rest will definitely be able to. Flat walls and windows aren't worth the savings.

Ambient Occlusion

Performance Impact: Medium (2-8 FPS). Background Shading darkens various corners, grooves, and cracks in surfaces. This makes the picture more embossed and contrasting. In addition, thanks to Ambient Occlusion, neighboring objects can cast shadows on top of each other.

Continuation

Depth of Field

Performance Impact: Medium (1-5 FPS).
Depth of field is now in every first blockbuster movie, and in The Division you can also customize the degree of its quality. However, in reality, “Medium” and “High” practically do not differ at least at standard definition (1920 × 1080). So try either turning it off or setting the "Average" value.

Object Detail and Extra Streaming Distance

Performance Impact: Medium (3-8 FPS).
Both parameters are responsible for the range of visibility of elements of the surrounding space, but the second complements the first due to even smaller details.

It is best to configure here using the selection method, since the number of frames consumed depends more on the power of the processor than the video card. But in general, on weak systems, you should not set it above 40%.

Chromatic Aberration

Performance Impact: None. Chromatic aberration is a fashionable lens effect, a filter that makes the picture more "lamp". It distorts the image by adding light streaks to the edges of objects.

You can safely turn it on if you like it - the FPS will not "sag" at all.

Lens Flare

Performance Impact: Low (4 FPS) Lens Flare is a purely cinematic effect whose name speaks for itself. However, The Division has a fairly large number of light sources that create glare, so relatively many frames are "eaten" (for this parameter) - up to 4 FPS. So on low power systems it is better to disable.

Vignette

Performance impact: almost none (<1 FPS). Эффект виньетирования пришел из кино и фотодела. Это затемнение краев изображения для создания особой атмосферы и лучшей контрастности. Его можно включать на свой вкус, так как он практически ничего не потребляет.

Reduce the graphics settings of your graphics card

For NVIDIA video cards, you need to go to the "NVIDIA control panel" (usually right-clicking on the desktop) and in the "Adjust image settings" tab move the slider to the "Performance" state.

The video card is one of the main components on which the FPS depends.
Now I will show you how to set up an NVIDIA graphics card.

First, let's figure out the power supply:

Control Panel - Power Options - Sleep Mode Setting - Change Advanced Power Options - PCI Express - Link State Power Management - Value: Off.

Next, open the NVIDIA Control Panel, and in the "3D Settings" list, select "Manage 3D Settings", select The Division and specify these settings:
Anisotropic Filtering: OFF
Vertical sync pulse: OFF
Background Light Shading: OFF
Maximum number of pre-trained personnel: 4
Streaming Optimization: ON (If multiple processors)
Power management mode: Maximum performance mode preferred
Anti-Aliasing - Gamma Correction: OFF
Anti-Aliasing - Transparency: OFF
Triple buffering: OFF
Texture Filtering - Anisotropic Sampling Optimization: OFF
Texture Filtering - Quality: High Performance
Filtering textures - negative deviation of UD: Snap
Texture Filtering - Trilinear Optimization: OFF

Disable your antivirus and background programs

Almost all anti-virus systems and many programs running in the background cause an increased load on the processor, thereby lowering the FPS in the game. It is recommended to disable programs like browsers (Chrome, Firefox) and temporarily disable the antivirus to improve game performance.

System speed

At this stage, everything is simple. Go to "My Computer", then "Properties", "Additional System Parameters", "Performance", below "Parameters" and select the column "Provide the best performance"

Paging file

A paging file is a file on the hard drive that is used by Windows to store certain data that no longer fit in the computer's RAM.

Virtual memory is RAM plus a paging file.

From these two definitions, it follows that these two concepts are interrelated and in order to change the size of virtual memory, you need to change the size of the paging file

But before you start, you need to remember two simple rules.
Rule one. It is recommended to make the initial size of the paging file one and a half times the size of your RAM. That is, if I have 2 GB of RAM, I set the original paging file size to 3000 MB.
The second rule. You do not need to create a paging file on the same hard disk partition where the operating system is installed. This section is already loaded with the operating system and all the programs installed on it. Create a paging file on the least used partition.

1. Click on the "My Computer" shortcut and select "Properties". This can be done through the "Start".

2. Here we go to the "Advanced" tab and in the "Performance" section press the "Options" button.

3. Here we also go to the "Advanced" tab, to the "Virtual memory" section and click the "Change" button.

4. So we got to the window we needed. Here we select the least loaded partition of the hard disk (In my case, this is disk I), We put the switch on the "Custom size" item. We set the original size and the maximum size. Of course, you can set those parameters that you think are necessary, but as I already wrote, the initial size should be one and a half times larger than the RAM. After everything is filled in - press the button "Set".

5. After we have set the paging file on one of the hard disk partitions, it can be disabled on the rest. To do this, one by one go to all the other sections, put the switch opposite the item "Without paging file" and click "Set".

6. That's it, we restart the computer for the changes we made to take effect.

Permission

It is better to set the resolution small. The higher the resolution, the lower the fps.

If it doesn't help

If all of the above did not help, and your FPS are jumping, then there may be problems with the OS or hardware.
Hardware problems are most likely either RAM, hard drive, or overheating. If we sin on the RAM, then it must be run through the memtest program. Hard - free up disk space, do defragmentation (I recommend O&O Defragmenter for the latter). It is better to deal with overheating in stages - first, clean the system unit from dust, replace the thermal paste on the processor, etc. Better to read articles on this case.

The Division may crash due to too little free RAM. Close external programs that are consuming memory before launching the game. We recommend that you use the Razer Game Booster software. Crashes can also occur due to imperfect optimization of the game - in this case, wait for patches, and as soon as they come out, update immediately.

Mouse not working in The Division

A common problem for The Division beta testers is the complete lack of functionality of the mouse buttons in the game.

Check the box next to "Run this program in compatibility mode for: and select Windows 7 from the drop-down list"
Click "Apply"

SERVER CONNECTION DIFFICULTIES - Endless Connection

Some players were not even able to play The Division because after clicking start the game there is an endless connection and you are wondering.

I am having difficulty connecting to the network while playing. What should I do?

1. Firewall
Start by updating your antivirus or personal firewall / Firewall that you may have installed on your computer. To update and identify software such as ZoneAlarm, Norton AntiVirus / Internet Security, McAfee, Avast, etc., contact the software manufacturer. Be aware that Windows Firewall (which can be accessed through the Control Panel as shown below) may be blocking the game's Internet connection. You should update your Windows operating system to update your security software settings.

If updating these programs does not resolve the situation, you may need to configure the software to allow access to a specific application. This action is performed through the list of exclusions (may be named differently, depending on your software). When adding a game as an exception, do not forget to add the executable file (EXE) for both the game and Uplay.

2.Network ports
If the above instructions for updating the system and adjusting the security settings did not solve the problem, you will need to redirect the following network ports to the internal IP address of your computer for the best possible connection:

Uplay PC:
TCP: 80, 443, 14000, 14008, 14020, 14021, 14022, 14023 to 14024.

Game Ports:
UDP: 33000 to 33499
TCP: 27015, 51000, 55000 to 55999, 56000 to 56999

Example of network port forwarding

Instructions for configuring network ports are specific to the software used, and can be found on the manufacturer's web page. You can also check out free resources like Port Forward. Please note that this site is not affiliated with Ubisoft.

3. Background applications
You may also encounter difficulties caused by applications running in the background on your computer. When playing Ubisoft games, please make sure to close all running background applications before starting the game.

To do this, please go to the Start menu on your desktop (for Windows Vista / Windows 7, please press the Windows + "R" key combination at the same time).
- In the input line, type - MSCONFIG and press the Enter key
- Browse the list of startup items and select the Selective startup option if it is not already selected. If you don't see this feature, make sure you click on the "General" option at the top of the window.
- Uncheck "Load startup items"
- Click "Apply" and "Ok" and then restart your computer

Disable startup items with Msconfig

* Please note that this is only a temporary solution and you can undo any changes by returning to the MSCONFIG utility by selecting the Normal Startup option again.

Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 startup items can be disabled in Task Manager.

To disable startup programs, click on the right mouse button to bring up the context menu and select "Disable".

4.HOSTS files
The host file is a small text file that is part of the Windows operating system. The host file can be used to route traffic and sometimes block a website.
Clear your HOSTS file to exclude the possibility of blocking access to multiplayer games. The easiest way to clean up your HOSTS file is to click on the Fix it button in the Microsoft article, which can be found here.

5.Traffic throttling / Blocked ports
You may face restrictions from your Internet Service Provider (ISP). If the network connection problem is not resolved, contact your ISP for more information about possible restrictions on the previously mentioned network ports.

A red screen appears randomly after your character dies. You are reborn and you get the Soviet banner on the screen. The solution to the problem is to restart the client.

Beta The Division lags

If you're having performance issues with Tom Clancy's The Division, the following steps may help:

Turn off vertical sync
Use full screen mode instead of windowed mode
Update your graphics card driver (Yes, trivial advice, but suddenly you didn't)
After the revival, wait for a little loading of the world around you
Don't run in crowds in the Dark Zone

There are a lot of complaints about the fact that the iron is powerful, but at the same time, the game lags and freezes terribly. The fault is a little crooked port, from consoles to PC, With excellent work on some components, on others of similar power it will slow down.
- Go into the game, minimize, then open the NVidia settings, there, among all the processes, find the Tom Clancy's The Division process. Next, in the second paragraph, find and select the graphics processor "High-performance NVIDIA processor". Then, in the third paragraph, select "Vertical sync pulse" and put a tick on. save the settings and restart the game.
- Enable Anisotropic filtering, go to "PhysX configuration setup" in NVidia settings, select your graphics processor (video card) there.

Has become the best online entertainment for many shooter fans. Recently, a major update was released for it to version 1.1. Along the way, AMD and NVIDIA have released newer drivers for their graphics cards. In the end, we decided to supplement our in-game test results that were present in the latest video card reviews. In this article, we conducted group testing of AMD and NVIDIA video cards in different quality modes, and also studied the features of additional settings and their effect on performance.

The game is based on the Snowdrop engine. The picture pleases with high detail, an abundance of reflective surfaces and rich light effects. Virtual New York looks especially beautiful in the morning or evening, when volumetric rays of light play with golden reflections on windows and puddles, and the backlit dense fog takes on even greater saturation and density.

The game offers many graphical settings and several standard quality profiles. We will compare a group of mid-range video cards in the game at high and maximum quality. The most popular models of the current generation and some popular models of the middle segment from previous series will take part in the testing.

The list of tested video cards is as follows:

  • Radeon R9 290X 4GB;
  • Radeon R9 380X 4GB;
  • Radeon R9 380 2GB;
  • Radeon R9 280X 3GB;
  • Radeon HD 7970 3GB;
  • Radeon R9 270X 2GB;
  • Radeon R9 270 2GB;
  • GeForce GTX 780 Ti 3GB;
  • GeForce GTX 780 3GB;
  • GeForce GTX 960 2GB;
  • GeForce GTX 950 2GB;
  • GeForce GTX 760 2GB.

All participants will be tested at par and when overclocked. Only the older members GeForce GTX 780 Ti and Radeon R9 290X are tested only at standard frequencies. They initially stand out a little from the general row of participants, because until recently they represented the top segment.

Test stand

The test bench configuration is as follows:

  • processor: Intel Core i7-3930K (3, [email protected], 4 GHz, 12 MB);
  • cooler: Thermalright Venomous X;
  • motherboard: ASUS Rampage IV Formula / Battlefield 3 (Intel X79 Express);
  • memory: Kingston KHX2133C11D3K4 / 16GX (4x4 GB, [email protected] MHz, 10-11-10-28-1T);
  • system drive: Intel SSD 520 Series 240GB (240 GB, SATA 6Gb / s);
  • additional disk: Hitachi HDS721010CLA332 (1 TB, SATA 3Gb / s, 7200 rpm);
  • power supply unit: Seasonic SS-750KM (750 W);
  • monitor: ASUS PB278Q (2560x1440, 27 ″);
  • operating system: Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64;
  • GeForce driver: NVIDIA GeForce 364.51;
  • Radeon driver: AMD Grimson 16.3.2.

Driver settings are standard. All tests are carried out at 1920x1080. The built-in gaming benchmark was run seven times. The frame counting system has raised questions from the very first day of the game's release. The final results that the game shows us do not correspond to the readings that we see during the test on the built-in frame counter. Therefore, the Fraps utility was used to measure fps.

First, let's compare the video cards with the maximum graphics quality profile. This configuration is shown in the screenshots below. Vertical sync was completely disabled so as not to limit the upper performance limit to 60 fps.

Test results in this mode are displayed on the diagram.

We can see a significant difference between the minimum and average fps. But here it should be noted that in a real game, similar drawdowns are extremely rare, although possible. The minimum performance occurs at the moment when a burning car with thick smoke is in the frame. Even the GeForce GTX 960 does not pull out the maximum graphics quality mode from NVIDIA solutions at standard frequencies. But after overclocking, this video adapter produces about 40 fps, although at a low minimum fps.

The Radeon R9 380X, Radeon R9 380, Radeon R9 280X and GeForce GTX 780 have very similar values in the nominal value. Noteworthy is the minimal difference between the Radeon R9 380X and the Radeon R9 380. These comrades, at the recommended frequencies, demonstrate the performance of the GeForce GTX 960 overclocked to the limit The indicators of the whole four do not differ much after the increase in the frequencies of all participants. In terms of average, the GeForce GTX 780 is slightly faster than its rivals, but in terms of the minimum parameter it is better than the Radeon R9 380X.

In the confrontation between the Radeon R9 290X and the GeForce GTX 780 Ti, the advantage is on the side of the AMD representative with a difference of up to 18% in the minimum fps and less than 7% in the average. Both video adapters deliver about 50 frames per second for the main game, which does not exclude the possibility of serious drawdowns up to 30 fps and below.

The high quality profile is shown below. From manual settings - completely disable vertical sync.

Changing presets slightly reduces shadow resolution, local reflections, anisotropic filtering, ambient occlusion, depth of field effect, broadcast distance and detail. The bottom results will show how much this will affect performance.

Younger video adapters increase the average fps by about a third. But in terms of minimum fps, their performance is still below the acceptable level. Nevertheless, it is clear that even the GeForce GTX 760 and Radeon R9 270 can be played after a slight decrease in the parameters. The GeForce GTX 950 takes a middle position between the Radeon R9 270 and the Radeon R9 270X, and in overclocking the GeForce GTX 950 is on par with the Radeon R9 270X.

The GeForce GTX 960 narrows its lag behind the Radeon HD 7970. Both rivals already deliver very high average fps. Approximate parity remains between the Radeon R9 280X and the GeForce GTX 780, faster than their Radeon R9 380X. After overclocking, the GeForce GTX 780 is better than its closest rivals in terms of average fps, but still leads the Radeon R9 380X in terms of minimum.

The ratio between the Radeon R9 290X and the GeForce GTX 780 Ti changes slightly. The lag of the old NVIDIA flagship after lowering the graphics quality decreases to 6-9%.

Smoothing

Anti-aliasing is always important to the player. Anti-aliasing settings often have a significant impact on overall performance. While anti-aliasing is not critical for performance in Tom Clancy's The Division, its impact is small.

The game always offers "temporary anti-aliasing" when choosing high quality presets. As the name suggests, this is Temporal AA. There are several other SMAA options in the settings menu, but they are never used. Does alternate mode make sense? Comparing screenshots and testing with different options will answer this question.

To begin with, let's set TAA to the “stabilization” position, which, in fact, turns off this anti-aliasing. Then we turn on SMAA of the maximum available Ultra-quality, and then replace it with the usual TAA mode "oversampling".

SMAA Ultra

The first screenshot clearly shows the stepped edges of the outlines of buildings, tents, branches. Even the line of snow against the background of the fence has a clear comb in some places. SMAA Ultra-level smooths all this well, which is best seen along the contours of buildings and structures on the roofs. TAA makes some of the contours smoother, but the disappearance of some small elements is noticeable. You can also take a look at the fencing mesh. In SMAA, the structure of the cells is not uniform, and in TAA, all cells are the same.

Comparing the enlarged fragments will allow you to better identify the features of each mode.

Thin designs retain their stepped structure under SMAA, albeit to a lesser extent. TAA completely neutralizes this, but some distant elements can indeed disappear. It is also worth paying attention to the joints of objects with a general gray background. This is best seen in the first illustration. There is a comb at the junction of the beams due to individual dark pixels. TAA completely neutralizes this negative effect.

This comparison shows that the default "Temporary Anti-Aliasing" is better at smoothing the edges of objects. Along the way, a slight blurring of the picture is obtained, but this is compensated by the sharpness settings, for which there is a corresponding parameter in the menu. Performance will be discussed below.

Additional settings

When you select the best quality profile, not all parameters are set to limit values. Additionally, you can raise the quality of reflections, background shading and detail.

The overall quality of reflections is not raised above average by default. When choosing a high quality reflections, it is extremely difficult to notice changes. They are only visible in scenes where there are a lot of reflective surfaces. As an example, we will use two screenshots from the comparison material on graphics settings from the NVIDIA website.

Reflection Quality Medium

Reflection Quality High

As the quality increases, we see additional reflections in nearby puddles, more glare on cars and far windows of the building.

Let's compare the quality of the background shading.

SSAO Very High

SSAO Ultra

Increasing this parameter by one more point has almost no effect on the final image. It can only be noted that the intensity of some shadows at the junction of objects increases slightly. This can be seen in the elements on the ceiling.

The "detail" parameter affects the number of visible small objects at long distances. For example, some garbage bags or other small items disappear. Not critical for the perception of the overall picture and is most noticeable between low and high distance values. Between the 60% that the game offers and the maximum value of the scale, the difference is generally minimal.

Now let's see how increasing the three available parameters to the maximum affects the default configuration of settings. At the same time, on the same graph, we present the test results with alternative anti-aliasing SMAA. Let's compare all modes using the example of the Radeon R9 290X.

SMAA efficiency is lower than standard anti-aliasing, as is performance. So there is no point in changing the type of anti-aliasing. Changing several available parameters above the maximum quality configuration results in a 5-7% decrease in fps. For a video adapter of the level of Radeon R9 290X, this is not critical, so you can safely make such changes to your settings configuration.

Additional NVIDIA effects

Let's talk separately about additional effects based on NVIDIA technologies. Let's start with the HBAO + alternate background shading mode. Compare it with the previously shown image at maximum SSAO quality.

SSAO Ultra

The difference between these images is quite noticeable. HBAO + enhances shadows in the far corners of the room. At the same time, the intensity of the shadows in the ceiling elements decreases, but the frieze elements are better visible. Note that the shelves of all shelving units are in the darker area. The boxes in the foreground are unevenly lit and show a clear separation between the lighted and dark sides. The same thing happens with the boxes in the background on the right side of the frame. The same effect is visible on objects on the table. Although the area itself under the tables is lighter. And if you pay attention to how the main shadows fall, you can see that HBAO + forms additional shadowing based on the direction of lighting.

Let's compare the same shot in a different setting.

SSAO Ultra

With normal background shading, there is more of a dark area under the truck on the left. HBAO +, on the other hand, enhances the projecting elements of the building on the right and enhances the shadows where the trash bags meet. At the same time, small penumbra from bags on the asphalt disappear. The snow in the second image is not so uniform, the difference between light and dark areas is better visible, which emphasizes its relief.

The game can use one of two NVIDIA soft shadow algorithms - PCSS and the all-new HFTS. PCSS soft shadows have often been used in other games. This method is resource intensive and helps to achieve realistic shadow rendering under sunlight. Its essence is that the contours of the shadows are blurred in the same way as it happens in real sunlight on a bright day. And due to the scattering of light, as the distance from the object increases, the shadow becomes more and more blurry. NVIDIA HFTS (Hybrid Frustum Traced Shadows) is based on an initially complex method of creating shadows with more accurate geometry and subsequent blurring. This method should produce geometrically accurate shadows from complex objects and sharper at the base of the objects that cast them.

In Tom Clancy's The Division, the constant movement of the sun changes the position of the shadows relative to the observer. The passage of time cannot be stopped, so it is difficult to draw a detailed comparison of all three modes. We will clearly show the difference between regular shadows and HFTS.

Shadow quality high

Shadow Quality HFTS

In simple mode, we see a slight softening of the shadow outlines. With HFTS, due to blur, the outline of the shadow of the pillar on the right is almost lost. The shadow of the branches on the tents is strongly blurred. But at the same time, the shadow from the undulating frame of the bicycle parking on the left retains the correct outline, albeit more blurry. The shadow from the hero becomes weaker and weaker with distance. This is closer to the real picture of shadow formation, but not everyone will like the final effect. Please note that such shadows are formed only in the daytime, artificial lighting gives clear contours. Also, enabling HFTS overrides the shadow resolution settings, changing this parameter does not affect anything.

Learn more about NVIDIA effects in the video:

Let's compare the performance impact of HBAO + and soft shadows. Let's take the Ultra + settings mode as a basis. Further testing will be carried out with only one effect turned on in order to identify the individual effect on the overall frame rate.

Choosing HBAO + instead of the usual maximum quality SSAO reduces performance by almost 4% on the Radeon R9 290X graphics card. Of the soft shadows on AMD, only PCSS can be used. This mode is given 7-10% harder compared to regular shadows.

Now let's make a similar comparison based on the GeForce GTX 780 Ti.

Enabling HBAO + has a positive effect on productivity. This is unusual, because in many games, even on GeForce, the usual SSAO is given with less performance loss. But the inclusion of PCSS shadows leads to a decrease in performance by 7-13%, and this is more than a drop in fps on a Radeon. With HFTS shadows, the performance is slightly higher, but the advantage over PCSS is only a couple of percent. As a result, it is clear that it is better to use HFTS shadows on NVIDIA video cards.

conclusions

Based on the results of testing middle-class video cards, we see the advantage of AMD solutions over NVIDIA video adapters. The Radeon R9 380 and Radeon R9 280X are faster than the GeForce GTX 960 and demonstrate results on a par with the old GeForce GTX 780. The latter plays out a little when overclocked, but in this mode the accelerated Radeon R9 380X competes well with it. In the confrontation between Radeon R9 290X and GeForce GTX 780 Ti, the advantage is on the side of the former.

Playing with maximum graphics quality on a Radeon R9 380 or GeForce GTX 960 is possible only when overclocked, which still does not exclude the possibility of serious fps drops. A high quality profile is more optimal for them. For a GeForce GTX 760 or Radeon R9 270 (the closest modern counterpart to the Radeon R7 370), it will be necessary to reduce the graphics quality to about an average level.

Based on the test results, we do not see any serious advantages of video cards with a large memory capacity. But they are quite noticeable in the form of long loadings of textures during long gaming sessions. For a comfortable game with maximum graphics quality, 2 GB of video memory is still not enough.

If you want to get the most beautiful picture, you can safely wind up those parameters that can still be increased. On powerful video cards, this will give a slight decrease in performance. Do not touch only "neutral lighting". There is no point in choosing SMAA instead of standard anti-aliasing. If the picture looks a little blurry to you, sharpen the image. Among the additional NVIDIA effects, you can safely include HBAO +, in this mode, lighting features are better taken into account, which allows you to highlight the relief structure of some elements of the environment due to additional shadows. And on GeForce, this Ambient Occlusion mode gives a slight performance boost. The use of soft eyeshadows depends on personal preference. The PCSS and HFTS algorithms make the shadows more realistic, but not everyone will like such a strong blur.
