Oppo R5 Testing - Review of a thin and very durable smartphone. OPPO F5 Review

The Oppo F5 looks stylish, attractive and even a little sleek, but not particularly original.

On the front panel, you can see an almost solid display, which occupies 78% of the device's surface area. For comparison, this parameter is higher - 83.6%. In addition to the fashionable format, we note the smooth rounded corners, control buttons on the display and the fact that the screen is bent at the edges and covered with a protective film. The rear panel is distinguished by a slightly bulging lens, a slightly elongated fingerprint scanner and thin curved inserts along the top and bottom end. Everything is quite typical, but due to the oval scanner, the phone no longer looks so ordinary and is somehow different and recognizable.

The arrangement of the elements is typical - the volume rocker on the left and the power key on the right. Interestingly, there is a connector for and a micro-USB 2.0 port, which is already perceived by many as old. The side ends are smooth and convex, but they do not enclose the display, it seems to rise slightly above them.

The dimensions of the novelty are 156.5 × 76 × 7.9 mm, and the weight is 154 grams. Good weight for a large screen, with 5.15-inch weighing the same. The size of the smartphone is close to 5.5-inch. An amazing detail, but the body, or rather the back of the phone, turned out to be plastic, not metal, although it looks and feels like metal. But we cannot say that this is bad - the smartphone has a solid construction, although the matte back actively absorbs dirt and fingerprints, it is also slightly rubbed.

The Oppo F5 can be purchased in three colors: black, gold and red.

Screen - 4.5

The Oppo F5 has a trendy, elongated 6-inch 2: 1 (or 18: 9, whichever you like) screen. Based on the test results, we rate it as high-quality - bright, contrasting and without any serious flaws.

The type of the screen matrix is IPS, the resolution is 2160 × 1080 pixels, which has already been dubbed as Full HD +. The pixel density is 402 ppi, which is more than enough for a clear picture. There is a protective glass Gorilla Glass 5 and an oleophobic coating. It was not possible to evaluate the latter because of the factory film pasted on the screen.

Measured brightness range: 3 to 467 nits, which should be comfortable both at night and on a sunny day. Yes, the brightness is not the highest, but due to the high contrast ratio (1560: 1) this is quite enough. The color gamut can be assessed as wide - it covers 100% of sRGB, but still falls out of it a little. The color temperature is close to the reference (7200 instead of 6500), you can also tweak it in the settings yourself.

Cameras - 3.5

Oppo F5 shoots very decently for its price tag, both front and back: on the main 16 MP and front 20 MP cameras, and the emphasis is on advanced selfies.

Interestingly, the main camera did not get much attention, only phase detection autofocus and a fairly wide aperture of f / 1.8 are announced. Nevertheless, it shoots with dignity and is inferior to top solutions only when shooting in the dark. Of course, one can complain that the focus can sometimes be wrong and the frames lose a little sharpness at the edges, but for its money the Oppo F5 shoots very decently - with a lot of details and good color reproduction. The camera is also notable for its interface, which is almost identical to the camera in iOS. This means that there are almost no settings here, and those that are there will have to be accessed from the general settings of the device. At the same time, it's a pity that the phone does not shoot 4K video, only in Full HD (1920 × 1080 pixels), and the panoramas are slightly cut in resolution.

The front-facing camera is excellent at taking selfies, even indoors, although we still lacked autofocus. But there is a flash screen - in the manner. Even technical details are mentioned: f / 2.0 aperture and a 1 / 2.8 "sensor. The manufacturer generally says a lot of beautiful words about the front camera: about selfies with a bokeh effect (blurred background) and about smart algorithms that recognize lighting conditions and “optimize” faces in the frame. The front camera really does a good job with blurring, it defines the background much better than the dual-camera Asus Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro. But we cannot praise this "artificial intelligence" for improving selfies, its work is simply not noticeable.

Working with text - 5.0

The Oppo F5 offers a special edition of the TouchPal keyboard. It is very convenient, functional, and most importantly, it does not annoy with notifications and advertisements, as is often the case with Touchpal. There is also markup for additional characters, and continuous input, and different themes, adjusting the size of the keyboard and much more.

Internet - 3.8

Manufacturers have stopped pampering users with their own browsers, so Oppo F5 has everything like the rest - it uses the Chrome browser. There is no particular point in talking about it separately, we note only the main feature - synchronization with the popular desktop version.

Communications - 3.8

The Oppo F5's connectivity is good, but not impressive either:

  • dual-band Wi-Fi a / b / g / n with Wi-Fi Direct
  • LTE support
  • Bluetooth 4.2
  • FM radio
  • A-GPS.

For that kind of money, it's pretty modest. There is no infrared port, no FM radio, and not a word about the NFC chip. The LTE category is unclear, and one would expect high-speed Wi-Fi, not just dual-band. The phone uses the "old" Micro-USB 2.0 port, but with OTG support, so you can connect peripheral devices through it. The main feature is that the smartphone has three separate slots for two nanoSIM and a memory card. Already for this alone, he can be forgiven for an ordinary set of communications.

Multimedia - 3.9

The Oppo F5 supports the most popular audio and video codecs and offers slightly above average audio quality.

From audio files, the smartphone does not support AC-3, and from video it plays videos in high resolution smoothly. The Oppo F5 comes preinstalled with branded audio and video players, but they do not shine with any chips or features. But the phone has separate sound settings for listening to music with headphones. If we talk about the sound quality, then it is above average, as well as the speaker volume.

Battery - 3.5

The autonomy of the Oppo F5 is quite high, especially given its large diagonal. We easily had enough of it for a day of active use, while there was still a little charge left for the morning.

The battery capacity is typical for its size - 3200 mAh. For comparison, the unit has a 3300 mAh battery, like the. Nothing fancy, but the Oppo F5 does a decent job in benchmarks:

  • 8 hours 20 minutes of video marathon at maximum brightness and up to 12.5 hours at moderate, slightly bypasses Honor 9.
  • in music player mode, the phone lasts 77 hours, almost like
  • 30 minutes of shooting Full HD video reduces battery power by 12%, an hour in games - 16%, good performance, but slightly worse
  • we had enough battery for about 17 hours of talk time, which is no longer very impressive.

Oppo F5 does not support fast charging, the bundle provides the usual 5V and 2A. But it quickly fills the battery with a charge: by a quarter - in 25 minutes, and in an hour - by 57%. A full charge takes about two hours, not that fast, but not long.

Performance - 3.6

The performance of the Oppo F5 turned out to be only average, which is a bit sad for a phone for 25 thousand rubles.

The smartphone has a lot of RAM (4 or 6 GB), but a rather ordinary eight-core MediaTek MT6763T Helio P23 processor (four 1.6 GHz and four 2.3 GHz). The Mali-G71 MP2 is used as a graphics accelerator. These indicators are enough for smooth work in daily use and multitasking, but in terms of graphics, it is weak and inferior to the same Snapdragon 625 with its Adreno 506 (and many, many others). This difference is noticeable in heavy games, the phone does not cope with them as smoothly as we would like. But Oppo F5 hardly overheats, only up to 41.4 degrees after half an hour of load - it feels like excess heat, but does not cause severe discomfort.

In synthetic tests, the phone showed average results:

  • Geekbench 4 did not want to launch, but smartphones with similar hardware get about 3,900 points;
  • Antutu 6 - 66 942 points, comparable to which costs half the price;
  • 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited - 10,266 points, between and.

Memory - 5.0

The memory on the Oppo F5 is quite enough for normal use, here it is 32 or 64 GB. And if it gets clogged, then you can unload it in MicroSD format. It can be used to add up to 256 GB. At the same time, it is a pity that there is no hot swap option - when you try to insert a tray with cards, the phone reads the SIM-card with a new one and goes into reboot.

Peculiarities

The smartphone runs ColorOS 3.2 based. Its main feature is that the interface is very similar to iOS in. There is the same shutter that pops up from the bottom, a similar gallery, controls drawn at the top of the screen, even the camera application looks almost the same. It’s even strange that the keyboard and the preinstalled browser escaped the same fate. The settings in the Oppo F5 are already somewhat reminiscent of. Such borrowing or "accidental similarity" is not too bad, but at first it can confuse an experienced Android user who suddenly sees an iPhone-like interface.

Other features include an elongated 18: 9 screen, thin bezels, its own two-window mode and a chip with face recognition. The latter is not as reliable as the fingerprint scanner, but it turned out to be quite workable. At times, she may not recognize you in low or too bright light.

One of the world's largest smartphone manufacturers, the Chinese company Oppo, officially came to Russia and presented the F5 smartphone. Our expert Dmitry Bevza will tell you what is interesting about the new product, as well as what are its advantages and disadvantages.

The name of the Oppo brand in Russian sounds rather playful, but in general Oppo is a big and very serious story in the mobile industry. Oppo, along with brands such as Vivo and OnePlus, is owned by BBK Electronics LTD, and in 2017, in terms of total share, they, ahead of Apple, took the second place in the world after Samsung in terms of the number of smartphones sold.

So the Oppo F5. This is a trendy smartphone. Very trendy. Perhaps too trendy. Why? What are considered trends in smartphone manufacturing in 2017.

Bezel-less design? There is.

An elongated 18: 9 screen? There is.

Unlocking your smartphone by face? There is.

Lack of home button and gesture controls? There is.

Advanced portrait mode? Yes, and what kind.

Everything is very fashionable and relevant, but ... Let's look at F5 in more detail.

Design and construction

The bezel-less design with the elongated display looks impressive, but leaves no room for a fingerprint scanner on the front surface.

Accordingly, the scanner is located on the rear panel, in the upper part of which there is an element very similar to a plastic antenna insert in an aluminum housing. But no. In this case, this is just an imitation of an antenna insert, since in fact it is not needed in F5. The fact is that the back panel of the Oppo F5 is already plastic. It's just that the F5 designers approached the imitation of the aluminum back panel very responsibly.

Another unusual point is the protruding glass of the screen. As a rule, they try to "drown" it in the body or make the smartphone frame flow into the glass of the screen. In F5, things are different. Its display, on the other hand, is located above the body.

Photo: portal Moscow 24 / Dmitry Bevza

It looks unusual and a little strange. Otherwise, everything is quite standard, with the exception of a slot for SIM cards and memory cards. The F5 is equipped not with a hybrid, but with a full-fledged slot, where you can insert two SIM cards and a memory card. It is very good. Recall that most smartphones now have hybrid slots, which wildly infuriates users, since you can insert either an additional SIM card or a memory card into them.

Iron

There's not much to say about the F5's IPS display. Large, elongated, 6-inch, Full HD + resolution, medium brightness. The 18: 9 ratio is very convenient for Internet surfing, social networks, instant messengers, games, for watching videos, but you can tell in more detail about the memory and processor. There is a lot of RAM in the F5 - 4/6 gigabytes, depending on the version. The MediaTek processor for MT6763T Helio P23 is produced using 16-nanometer technology (the level of the flagship processors of 2016) and allows two SIM cards to work in LTE mode at once. The Helio P23 has an average performance, but the most interesting thing about it is its high energy efficiency, especially in standby mode. Paired with a 3200 mAh battery, we get up to two days of battery life.

Cameras

The Oppo F5 is equipped with a 16MP main camera and - attention! - 20MP front camera. Actually, it is she who attracts the most attention. In addition to the impressive matrix (20 MP) with an aperture of f / 1.8, the selfie camera is equipped with a special software SelfieTune. According to the company, this is not just a beautifier, but very complex software with AI elements. "SelfieTune technology uses artificial intelligence to recognize skin color, skin type, gender and age of people, comparing them with images in a collection of photographs. By scanning more than 200 points on a face, the software analyzes the appearance to optimally improve selfie photography," F5 presentation was spoken by OPPO Vice President Vincent Liu.

Here are some of the portraits captured with the front-facing camera of the Oppo F5:

Another point related to the front camera is face unlock. Yes, it's not as advanced as the iPhone X and requires password or fingerprint confirmation for transactions and payments, but overall, unlocking is reliable and fast. Probably the first time in the history of Andoid smartphones.

The main camera is good in normal light, in macro scenes, but the shots in the evening and at night are definitely not the strongest point of the F5. Although it is impossible to call them a failure either, but not the highest aperture ratio of the camera and the lack of optical and electronic stabilization affect.

The main camera also has an Ultra HD mode. Thanks to it, you can create 50-megapixel photos for large format printing.

Music

We all love music. Fortunately, Oppo did not remove the standard audio jack, as many mobile vendors now like to do. The playback quality is quite decent, and with wired headphones you can turn on the Real HD Sound mode from Dirac. Basically, this is just an advanced equalizer, but it really improves the perception of sound.

The standard player can display lyrics, but they must be embedded in the file itself; the player does not download them on its own from the Internet. The same goes for ID3 tags and album covers.

ColorOS 3.2 based on Android 7.1

The ideology of the СolorOS 3.2 operating system is very similar to iOS, but at the same time, we note several elegant solutions. After the release of the iPhone X, all gesture control systems are perceived as copying Apple, but recall that such controls appeared in Android smartphones several years ago. Oppo, if not perfect this system, made it absolutely working. ColorOS allows you to hide all control buttons, thus expanding the screen, and completely switch to gesture control. We spent all testing with the F5 in gesture control mode.

Another ingenious Oppo solution is calling up quick settings in F5 by swiping up / down from the bottom left of the screen, which is much more convenient for smartphones with large screens like the F5 than the classic curtain call with quick settings by swiping up / down from the top parts of the screen.

Summary

Pros of the Oppo F5:

- bezel-less design and 18: 9 aspect ratio, allowing a huge 6-inch display to be “crammed” into a relatively compact body;

- perfectly implemented gesture control;

- really working smartphone unlocking by face image;

- advanced selfie camera;

- long battery life;

- Simultaneous work with two SIM cards and a memory card;

- cover included.

Minuses:

- plastic back panel;

- lack of optical stabilization and optical zoom in the rear camera;

- neither wireless nor fast charging is supported;

- no NFC (Android Pay);

- old Micro USB connector;

- high price.

Oppo F5 is a bright and memorable smartphone. It has many advantages, but there are also enough disadvantages. It is definitely not suitable for everyone, both in terms of its size (6-inch screen) and rather narrow positioning for a youth audience and price (25-30 thousand rubles, depending on the amount of memory). It is unlikely that the F5 will become a hit of sales, but it will most likely have its own audience.

Dmitry Bevza

The latest generation phones from the market leaders come out really cool: a screen on the entire front panel, excellent cameras, face identification, smart hardware and ... a huge price. Fortunately, our Chinese friends come to the rescue, releasing devices similar in characteristics, but much cheaper. The best part is that the days when their phones looked like flagships only externally, and could "boast" a terrible screen sensor and "brakes", are over, and modern smartphones from the Middle Kingdom are almost in no way inferior to "Koreans" and "fruits".

Today we tested a smartphone from one of the leaders of the Chinese market OPPO F5, which boasts not only a frameless design and an analogue of Face ID, but also a 20 megapixel front camera controlled by artificial intelligence. At the same time, the price for it is very “tasty” - 25,000 rubles.

OPPO F5 review

Equipment

For what I respect Chinese manufacturers, it is for taking care of the buyer, because few people want to buy a brand new smartphone covered with scratches, so they will almost certainly spend money on a cover and a protective film. At the same time, you first need to find them, and then, still stick them correctly. When purchasing OPPO F5, you can forget about this, since a case is already placed inside the box and a protective film is glued.

The latter is glossy, glued without bubbles and occupies the entire front panel, the cover is made of transparent plastic in the bumper form factor. Most of all in the latter, I liked the rough back surface, from which the risk of dropping the phone is greatly reduced.

The rest of the package is standard: a clip for removing the SIM card tray, 2A charging, microUSB cable, in-ear headset and a set of documentation, including in Russian.

Design and ergonomics

Yes, bezelless smartphones with widescreen screens (2: 1) are no longer a rarity, but they are found mainly in flagships. In the middle price range, OPPO F5 is the only representative, which gives it a huge advantage over the competition.

The frames here are really minimal: the top and bottom frames are 7 mm each, and the side frames are 2 mm each. The white front panel here is not "smoothed" into the body, but is slightly raised above it, which visually makes the indents from the edges even smaller. Above are the earpiece, front camera lens, proximity and light sensors, as well as a white LED indicator.

On the left side there is a volume rocker, on the right side there is a power key and a SIM tray, which is not combined here, like most phones, but has three separate slots: 2 for nanoSIM and 1 for microSD. Although now there is a fashion for Type-C, it is still more convenient to use microUSB.

Imagine that you forgot to charge at home, and in the office hardly anyone will offer you a cable with a newfangled connector. That is why, at the bottom of the smartphone, there is a microUSB, a main speaker, a microphone and ... a 3.5 mm jack, again left for the convenience of users.

The location of the speaker, however, is not very good: during games or watching videos, it is drowned out by the palm. A second microphone is located on top.

The body of the device is made of matte plastic, similar in tactile sensations to metal. In my case, its color turned out to be gold, but smartphones with a black cover, red (with a more powerful filling and a higher price), as well as a Youth version in black (with simpler characteristics, but also worth accordingly) are available on the market.

In the center is the OPPO logo, a little higher is the fingerprint scanner, in the upper left corner is the main camera lens with LED flash. The sensor is located far from the camera, exactly in the place where the index finger rests, and if we also take into account that the response time is a fraction of a second, then it is really convenient to use it.

The body of the smartphone came out quite thin: about 6.5 mm, and all the optics of the camera simply did not fit inside: the lens protrudes by 1 mm, and this is fraught with the fact that its surface will soon be covered with scratches. However, the complete case saves, so I recommend using the phone only in it.

Thanks to the elongated screen, a 6-inch device is comparable in size (156.5x76) to a regular 5.5-inch smartphone. Nevertheless, it will be convenient for them to operate with one hand only for those with large palms, for all the others there is a “one-handed” mode that shifts the working area to the lower border of the screen.

In addition, you can change the relative position of the control keys that pop out from the bottom, or completely abandon them, replacing them with swipes. The last function is implemented conveniently, so I use this option. The rounded edges do not bite into the hand, it is convenient to hold and take the smartphone from the steel.

The average weight of 152 grams is pleasantly heavy for the hand, but does not cause discomfort. There are no complaints about the manufacturing - all the parts are clearly matched to each other, the keys do not play, and the case does not creak when squeezed.

Screen

One of the advantages of the smartphone is its six-inch LTPS display with a resolution of 2160x1080 pixels (402 ppi) and an aspect ratio of 2: 1. I am glad that the developers did not make 2K-resolution, since I consider these characteristics to be ideal for such a diagonal. Compared to classic smartphones, the screen is elongated here. In practice, this not only looks great, but also allows more information to be displayed in almost all applications. Many games have already been optimized for this resolution, and video players have learned to adequately stretch the picture to fill the screen so that there are no black bars on the sides, including YouTube. The screen is covered with a 5th generation Gorilla Glass protective glass, on which an oleophobic coating is applied. The quality of the matrix is also up to the mark: a good margin of brightness and good contrast allows you to use the phone without any problems even under the bright sun, the color rendition is natural, and the colors do not fade when viewed from any angle. Unfortunately, we will not be allowed to adjust the color rendition, but in the presence of the "Night mode", where you can adjust the color temperature. Correct setting will reduce eye strain in low light conditions or long reading.

Hardware platform

The phone is built on the fresh MediaTek Helio P23 chipset with eight ARM Cortex-A53 cores, clocked at 2.5 GHz. It is supported by the Mali G71 MP2 video accelerator and a new hardware camera control unit. Inside there is also 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage.

In the benchmarks, the results of which are given below, the gadget showed high results for the middle price segment, while during the entire testing period the gadget never got hot.

In real tests, everything is not so rosy: simple games are given to a smartphone very easily, but in heavy 3D games, you will have to reduce the graphics quality to medium settings in order to get a smooth operation. But the smartphone copes with the interface and applications successfully - no lags were noticed during their work. 4 GB of RAM allows you not to think too much about the number of tabs in the browser or the number of programs running.

Of course, the smartphone has enough wireless modules. Wi-Fi operates in the 802.11 b / g / n standard with 5 GHz frequency support. A Bluetooth 4.2 module is used to connect external devices. There is a built-in FM-receiver, which requires a wired headset to work. LTE supports all bands relevant for Russia. OPPO F5 navigates via GPS, GLONASS and BeiDou satellites, and a cold start takes just a few seconds. The only disappointment is the lack of an NFC module, so you won't be able to pay for purchases without contact. You should not expect some kind of revelation from the sound: the main speaker is quite loud, but you will hardly be able to get the entire frequency range when listening to music, the sound in the headphones is also not bad: no worse and no better than in most smartphones.

Cameras

Usually, manufacturers in this price range are actively saving on cameras, fortunately, this does not apply to OPPO F5, because its cameras are the best in the price segment and are quite comparable in photo and video quality with flagships of other companies.

The front camera has a 20-megapixel module with f / 2.0. The interface is simple, but it gives a good set of functions and modes. The main "feature" of the camera is the SelfieTune mode, which, using artificial intelligence, analyzes the face and makes it as beautiful as possible in the picture: removes acne, bags under the eyes, makes teeth whiter, lips pinker and rejuvenates. At the same time, she will not overdo it, turning her face into a "baby's butt".

If you don't trust AI, then you can set the degree of retouching forcibly, and this function is available even while shooting a video. You can blur the background, turn on HDR mode, apply filters or change the exposure - all in real time. By painting the screen in white, a flash is emulated, you can set the aspect ratio of the frame to 4: 3, 1: 1 or 2: 1, and thanks to a special mode, you can even take a selfie panorama.

Also, the front camera can focus in manual and automatic modes and take pictures by gesture. There are two video shooting modes: normal and slow motion. Although, in fact, the last point, on the contrary, speeds up the video. The camera shoots at 720p and 1080p.

The main camera in OPPO F5 has a 16-megapixel module with f / 1.8. The main difference is the presence of 2x optical zoom, activated by one button, and optical image stabilization. From the software differences: the "Expert" mode, which allows you to manually set all the parameters, and the "enhancer" works here only in manual mode.

Both cameras did a good job with all shooting modes. The smartphone was able to produce decent footage with accurate color reproduction, good detail and low noise. Of course, the quality drops at night, and the noise increases, but compared to other phones, the image does not suffer so much.

It can be seen that the developers not only installed good modules, but also did a lot of work on the camera algorithms. Flash enhances the details of the subject in the foreground and does not distort colors.

Panoramic frames are stitched together neatly, moving objects are not blurred. There are no complaints about the video either: the picture is good, the colors are juicy, there are no artifacts, and when you add it to the video editor, you don't have to re-encode the video in order to remove the discrepancy between the picture and sound.

Autonomous work

The OPPO F5 has a 3200mAh non-removable battery. For a 6-inch screen, this is an average figure, but the smartphone was able to surprise with its autonomy. All thanks to the good power saving mode, which slightly reduces the brightness of the display, turns off vibration and reduces the frequency of the processor, and also allows you to configure the background operation of any application. As a result, we have 12 hours of video playback and 7 hours of "heavy" games.

With active use, the smartphone lasts for 1.5 days, and if you exclude video and games from its load and limit the browsing time, the smartphone will last almost three days. An interesting feature: at the last 7%, the smartphone manages to hold out for half a day. But fast charging was not delivered: the smartphone is charged for at least 2 hours.

Interface

OPPO F5 runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat, but the proprietary ColorOS 3.2 shell turns it into a kind of gadgets from Apple. For example, there is no separate list of all applications, instead all their shortcuts are displayed on the desktop. A swipe from the top opens only the list of notifications, and to get to the control panel, you have to swipe from the bottom of the screen, the widget menu opens with a sliding movement of two fingers. At first, it all seems unusual, but after a week of use you get used to it. The main thing is that nothing "slows down".

Interesting features include a screenshot with three fingers, split-screen mode, simultaneous launch of applications under different accounts, support for gestures (to launch a specific application, just draw a sign on the off screen) and face unlock. The latter works almost perfectly under illumination, spending less than a second on recognition, but in the dark, a smartphone does not always manage to do this the first time. Perhaps a person similar to you is capable of conducting the system, but we did not succeed in deceiving the camera with a photograph.

Of the pre-installed ones, there are branded applications for watching videos and listening to music, a file manager, and a utility for clearing the memory of Phone Manager. It is possible to record directly from the telephone line, but the default dictaphone for some reason refuses to work in the background and requires you to be on the screen for stable operation.
As a keyboard, Touchpal is used, which not only allows you to enter information without lifting your finger, but also gives hints, predicting the next word, over the letters with which they begin, which turned out to be quite convenient.

During testing, I found one "jamb" - not working quick search by contacts. More precisely, when typing the first few letters, the phone searches, but only in some of the contacts, but if you scroll through them manually, you can find the one you need.

Not very convenient - only the quick jump bar by the initial letter saves (Russian is supported). Hopefully this will be fixed in the next update.

conclusions

The OPPO F5 phone really came out well. The phone is capable of captivating users with a modern design with a frameless bright large display, two great cameras, with features to improve the appearance and good battery life. Of the pleasant little things, there is an interesting package, the presence of a 3.5-inch jack, an FM receiver, separate slots for SIM and microSD, as well as face recognition technology. Of course, there are also disadvantages here, among which, for example, the lack of NFC and not the highest performance. But in the price range up to 25,000 rubles, it will be difficult to find something better. Oppo F5 will suit all lovers of selfies and mobile photography, as well as those who need a frameless design for little money.

Note

In order to make the front view of the phone more concise, we have hidden the light sensor at the top of the screen. Films with poor light transmission, such as color or darkness, may have the possibility of blocking the light-receiving holes and affect the normal use of the mobile phone.

You can refer to the design draft of OPPO original phone case and screen protector to see the specifications.

The super-thin, 0.19 "(4.85mm) Oppo R5 was unveiled at the end of October and named the world's thinnest smartphone - an impressively elegant phone made to please users who value aesthetics when choosing a smartphone.

Oppo R5 Smartphone - Reviews

The Oppo R5 packs a 64-bit Snapdragon 615, 2GB of RAM and a generous 13MP / 5MP rear and front cameras.

Oppo R5 is a slim smartphone for stylish people

There's no denying that viewing the Oppo R5 is a pleasure. The manufacturer does not rely only on the thin profile, but there is also a beautifully made, matte, silver finish in the form of a metal frame, combined with a white plastic weave.

Indeed, the R5 looks like a premium phone; despite its thickness, it is an absolutely reliable device.

The dimensions of 5.86x2.93x0.19 inches (148.9x74.5x4.85 mm) and the weight of 5.47 ounces (155 g) make the phone very attractive even among thin models, but at the same time, it is felt in the hand - just like traditional smartphones. Accessing the power buttons and volume control is very easy and convenient as both buttons are in a convenient location. Due to size restrictions, Oppo was unable to provide a 3.5mm headphone jack, and the phone doesn't have a dedicated speaker for listening to audio. The absence of these components contributes to the overall appearance of the device, since there are no elements that stand out from the general style, such as grills or holes, which spoil the overall appearance. Fear not, the phone comes with its own branded headset that connects via micro USB.

The screen is energetic, albeit inaccurate

The Oppo R5 has a 5.2 display with a 1920 x 1080 resolution, resulting in a 424ppi density, which gives us a clear and crisp image. The screen uses AMOLED technology, which gives bright images, although they do not differ in color accuracy. The brightness levels range from a minimum of 2 to a maximum of 339, making the Oppo R5's screen comfortable for viewing in pitch darkness, but uncomfortable when using the device in the sun.

The color temperature is 8011 K, but it is worth relying on a stable 6500 K. This leads to color imbalance, when blues and greens cool shades begin to prevail in everything.

Interface and functionality

OPPO's ColorOS system is a beautiful and functional variant of Android.

The Oppo R5 runs Android 4.4.4 with a revamped ColorOS system that provides a simplified interface that gets rid of cumbersome apps, adds customizable elements and gesture controls, themes and some other small but useful features. People using ColorOS v2.0.1 will feel at ease right away, while beginners will only have to go through a bit of training. On the R5, the software does not glitch or freeze, but there are stable and very minor delays when scrolling through screens. Users will be able to enjoy scrolling around, although it will take some getting used to the new interface.

Turning on the screen is quite simple and familiar - by double-clicking. When the screen is off, the user has a choice: draw a circle, which will open the camera app, or draw the letter V, which launches the flashlight. Swiping down with two fingers will play / pause music.

After the display is on, the user can control the volume by swiping up or down with two fingers. Swiping with three fingers takes a screenshot. The user can draw "O" or "V" to launch the camera or flashlight, or enter settings and create their own gestures and commands for a select group of predefined functions or applications.

In our experience, gestures when launching applications are slower and more unreliable than simply scrolling to the desired application and clicking on its icon, here you can simply enjoy beautiful and unusual controls.

Processor and memory

Not only is the Oppo R5 one of the thinnest smartphones in the world, it is also one of the first with a 64-bit core from Qualcomm SoC, ready to enter the Android Lollipop era with full force (and we assume Oppo will update its the latest devices of the new OS). Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 615 in February 2014 and it is the second smartphone with the new SoC (the first was the Desire HTC 820).

The 600 series is the latest innovation from Qualcomm and we are more than happy with the performance of the SD-615. Web browsing and 3D games run smoothly, even at maximum settings. The SoC comes with 2 gigabytes of RAM.

The R5 tends to overheat, although that's to be expected with such a slim body. Oppo said they are using materials that dissipate heat faster and also "radically improve thermal efficiency." However, we advise you to keep a close eye on overheating of the device as the temperature rises even further, for example when charging.

Unfortunately, the size of the phone gets in the way of storage as well, as Oppo only has 16GB of internal storage, 4.5 of which are used by the operating system, and there is no slot for an external memory card.

Internet and communication

As mentioned earlier, the screen has a good pixel density that makes even the smallest details crisp and clear. This is, of course, great for web browsing smoothly with minor freezes that appear on complex web pages. The smartphone does not have a proprietary browser - Oppo suggests using Google's Chrome, knowing that it will be enough for most users.

R5 is LTE-compatible, also has Bluetooth 4.0, AGPS, and 802.11 b / g / n / a and Wi-Fi; but unfortunately no NFC.

Cameras

The 13 MP Sony Exmor IMX214 camera paired with the app options brings good results.

The main camera module houses a 13 MP Sony IMX214 sensor with F2.0, while the front camera has 5 MP. The camera app is one of the best we've ever seen, offering a rich selection of modes, including auto, HDR, UHD, manual mode (aka expert mode), colorful night mode, and more. automatically activates the Face Beauty function and gives the user a variety of filters.

In situations where there is good lighting, the camera clicks quickly and gives us generally balanced images - colors are displayed accurately and images are neither harsh nor too soft. Indoors, the light sensor adjusts to light and allows you to shoot even in darkened rooms.

The phone's HDR function is disappointing, the images are too grainy. It can still be used in some dark rooms, but it is better to refrain.

Expert mode provides access to manual focus, exposure and shutter speed compensation, ISO, white balance, and at the same time, its parameters are not very complicated, so that even advanced users will be satisfied.

Video recording is not much different from shooting mode: we get a good picture, but the sound quality is somewhat lame.

Multimedia

The bright, crisp display is great for any viewing, but the audio has a few downsides. The 5.2 FHD screen allows you to view photos and videos with vivid and rich colors.

Oppo decided to use the speaker of the phone as a kind of loudspeaker, so the quality is not the best - the lack of volume and depth combined with interference in the middle frequencies, which results in a radio effect. This is not catastrophic, but clearly will not please when choosing a smartphone for listening to music.

Call quality

When called, it was a little difficult to understand what the other side was saying - the volume was lower than desired, the voices had a robotic effect and there was no depth of sound. For those who often speak on the phone, such indicators become a real problem.

Oppo R5 Battery Charge

In the operation of such a thin phone, manufacturers tried to maintain a compromise between appearance and battery capacity, but they did not succeed in this. In this case, at 2,000 mAh, the R5 managed to last 5 hours and 8 minutes in our battery life test - quite an impressive achievement, as the screen has a 5.2-inch display with 1080p resolution, but still the results leave this smartphone far behind premium. phones on Android.

There is also OPPO's VOOC technology, which uses a 4.5 charger and circuitry inside the smartphone to protect the battery from damage. So the Oppo R5 charges from 0% to 75% in 30 minutes, a full 100% in about 73 minutes. Fast charging is not an advantage as your phone runs down just as quickly, so you need to carry your charger with you wherever you go.

Our experience with the device shows that with everyday use, the work of a smartphone can be extended to one day. This can be achieved with the power saving mode.

Outcome

A very elegant phone with a large display, the Oppo R5 is suitable for casual users who prefer their smartphone to be used as an accessory rather than a tool for long surfing the Internet and gaming sessions.

The phone is very pleasant to the touch, as it is made of good materials. A good camera is complemented by various applications for easy shooting.

If a super-thin phone is what you are looking for, then the Oppo R5 is a good option, but be careful - it suffers from sound quality, a battery that is not suitable for long-term use, small memory sizes that cannot be expanded.

If you're ready to take a look at larger phones, you could take a look at the new Samsung Galaxy A5, which also promises a premium design, slim profile and 13/5 MP camera, plus new additions from Samsung.

If the R5 wanted to compete with the iPhone 6 in terms of thickness, it did. But we still recommend an iPhone with a higher battery life and a smart operating system.
