Equipment

Huawei P8 Lite review, we traditionally start with a bundle that comes in a narrow but tall package. The first thing we see when we open it is the smartphone itself, which lies on the sidewall. On the sides of it are two boxes that differ in size. A charger, a microUSB cable, a headset and a paper clip were placed in a large one. And in small lies the documentation.

In terms of its appearance, Huawei P8 Lite practically does not differ from the older modification, especially judging only by the pictures. But as soon as you pick up each of these gadgets, the difference becomes more noticeable.

Smartphone Huawei P8 Lite 2017 review showed that in the younger version they decided to save on case materials by refusing to use metal. There is not a single metal element in the design - even the frame is plastic. The back, although not removable, is entirely made of plastic. They tried to stylize it as metal, but an attentive user will easily notice the difference. Despite this, the phone looks good, only tactile sensations let you down, by which you immediately understand that you are holding a younger plastic model.

The display is covered with a protective glass, which is slightly recessed into the body. Above it, a notification light, a light sensor, as well as proximity, a conversational speaker and a front camera were installed.

Below - only the corporate logo, it was decided to use the on-screen keys.

The upper part of the back is occupied by a glass insert, which houses the lens of the main camera and a two-tone vertical flash to it.

A 3.5 mm jack and an auxiliary microphone were placed on the upper edge.

The main microphone, external speaker and microUSB port between them are installed at the bottom.

The left end was left empty, but on the right they placed a volume rocker, a power key and a hybrid slot in which you can install one microSIM paired with a nanoSIM or microSD.

Large gaps were left above and below the display, if they were not, the case would be much more practical. But in general, it fits well in the palm of your hand and does not strive to slip out.

Huawei P8 Lite black 2017 review acquaints with the fact that the smartphone received a good IPS display with a diagonal of 5 inches and HD resolution. The combination is not the best and gives 294 pixels per inch.

There is an oleophobic coating and an auto-brightness option that sets the correct settings depending on the light level around you. The quality of the oleophobic coating is not the best, but the finger glides easily. Multitouch has support for 10 simultaneous touches.

The maximum brightness mark should have been made higher - 316 cd / m², which is why it will be very problematic to use in bright sunlight. The minimum is set at 9.7 cd/m². The contrast is low - 505:1.

The Huawei P8 Lite black smartphone review showed that the screen has no significant flaws, but it is completely unsuitable for use in bright sunlight. Brings a margin of brightness and contrast, but in its price range, everything is not so bad. In the menu you can find an item such as “Color temperature”. By going into it, you can select one of the available display color modes. This is a good solution, because some users will like colder tones, while others, on the contrary, want to see warmer shades.

Performance

The characteristics of Huawei P8 Lite 2017 black are based on a proprietary processor - HiSilicon Kirin 620. It is 64-bit and includes 8 cores with a frequency limit of 1.2 GHz. In addition to it comes the Mali-T450 MP4 graphics accelerator. RAM - 2 GB, and built-in - 16 GB. After the first turn on, a little more than 1 GB of RAM and 10.49 GB of internal memory remain available. Yes, the volume is not enough, but do not forget that you can donate one SIM and install a microSD.

According to the results of synthetic tests, the processor is comparable to the MediaTek MT6752 and will be slightly better than the Snapdragon 615.

The computing power is enough for the smartphone to confidently cope with any everyday tasks, and in games there will be good fps if you experiment with the graphics settings. It may not always be possible to play at the maximum, but the gameplay is comfortable and without slowdowns, even if we talk about the latest hits such as NFS No Limits.

Wireless communications

Huawei P8 Lite 2017 black review shows that the smartphone received an NFC chip and Bluetooth 4.0. Unfortunately, Wi-Fi support is only 2.4 GHz. The location is determined quickly and with minimal error, for which GPS and GLONASS are used. Signal reception is stable, no problems during testing have ever arisen.

Working with SIM cards is arranged in a classic way: priorities are set in the settings, so you don’t have to choose which one to make a call or send an SMS every time. But you need to take into account that 4G / 3G is supported only by the first card.

Sound

Huawei P8 Lite 2017 dual sim review shows that the external speaker boasts a large volume margin. The quality of music playback did not disappoint, the only thing is that it was placed in a not very good place. During the game, it is easily blocked by the palm of your hand, muffling the sound. The earpiece transmits the interlocutor's voice without distortion, the volume margin is acceptable. The microphone also does its job well. Music sounds good in the headset, and it will be comfortable to listen to it at half the volume, provided you use high-quality headphones.

autonomy

Huawei P8 Lite review moves to autonomy, which is the responsibility of a battery with a capacity of only 2200 mAh, which is very small by today's standards. This already hints that you can’t walk far from the outlet with Huawei P8, or you always have to have a power bank at hand. This implies weak autonomy results, although with a moderate use case it will be possible to reach the evening charge. The situation is saved by power-saving modes, when activated, all background activity is suppressed. You can choose from three levels of energy saving. In the maximum economy mode, performance is cut down, which can cause resource-intensive applications to lag.

As the Huawei P8 Lite gold review showed, with continuous reading, the battery lasted for 11 hours at minimum brightness, and when playing 720p videos at the same brightness and with an active Wi-Fi connection - 7 hours. In games, the device lasted 3.5 hours. The results are average, no matter how hard you try, but you will have to connect to the charger every day. It takes 2 hours and 15 minutes to fully charge.

Huawei P8 Lite camera review

Huawei P8 Lite white dual sim review moves on to cameras in which we did not find much change. The 13 MP Sony IMX 214 sensor already familiar to many, which we saw in previous generations of the smartphone, is used as the main module. In the hands of a skilled photographer, you can count on decent pictures, but the quality of the pictures is greatly affected by lighting conditions.

In a standard application, there are a huge number of settings in which an ordinary user can easily get lost. Shooting can be done in HDR mode, which draws out the illumination of objects located in the shadows. Huawei Honor P8 lite review showed that you can make audio notes from photos, put a watermark, perform continuous shooting and colorful panoramas of the area. Both the main and front cameras received a facial skin enhancement mode, when visual imperfections, including acne, are smoothed out.

In good light conditions, high-quality pictures are obtained, although noise appears on them when zoomed in. When shooting at night, you have to freeze for a few seconds to get a really good shot, but it's worth it.

The wide-angle front camera with a resolution of 5 megapixels can record videos in Full HD format. You can get good selfies on it if you shoot in good lighting conditions.

Conclusion

Huawei P8 lite deserves attention among those who appreciate, above all, the practicality of the case and its design. But besides this, the smartphone has something to offer - an excellent camera, user-friendly interface, good stuffing and clarity of images on the display. At the same time, the stock of brightness and contrast of the screen upsets, it would not be out of place to tighten the battery capacity.

Where could I buy?

In the spring of this year, Huawei introduced the P8 smartphone, which became the company's flagship compact line. Yes, although the difference between the screen sizes of Mate and P is shrinking year by year (from 1.4" in 2013 to 0.3" today), Mate models are considered phablets, and P are compact smartphones for those who do not like large corps. In addition to the "regular" P8, its simplified version P8 Lite is also sold in Russia, which looks similar, but has a number of serious differences. Let's take a closer look at this couple.

Video review

Equipment and design

Huawei P8 and P8 Lite came to us for testing without a box, along with them came headphones, a USB cable, a needle for ejecting SIM / SD trays and a charger (5 V, 1 A). According to the company's website, buyers get an even more simplified package, devoid of headphones. Given their sound quality, this is a small loss. However, in the box with the flagship I would like to see something other than the proposed set.

Huawei P8 and P8 Lite are similar in appearance. They are almost the same size (P8 is 3.9mm taller and 1.5mm wider than P8 Lite, but 1.3mm thinner) and have identical looks. The microUSB connector, speaker and microphone are both on the bottom, the volume and lock keys are on the right, the 3.5mm headphone jack and an additional microphone are on the top. On the back of both smartphones are the Huawei logo, 13-megapixel cameras and certification information. Both P8 and P8 Lite do not have a removable back, and the microSD and SIM trays are placed on the right side.

From the front, the smartphones differ a little more - there are no logos on the front of the P8, only a screen, an 8-megapixel front camera, an LED indicator, light and proximity sensors, and in the P8 Lite, the word "Huawei" is added to this set under the screen. The P8 Lite also has the LED on the top left, while the P8 has the top right. However, in addition to all the above trifles (I could also mention the different location of the flash relative to the rear camera), there is one very important difference between smartphones - the P8 is made of metal, while the P8 Lite is made of plastic. Thanks to this, Lite feels much cheaper than its relative, but it feels less warm.

Both smartphones are perfectly assembled (in the case of the all-metal P8, it simply could not be otherwise). Their ergonomics are excellent, the buttons are located well, it is convenient to press them, you do not need to intercept the case, but only if you hold the gadget in your right hand. For a left-hander (and those right-handers who are comfortable using the phone with their left hand), the cluster of buttons on the right side will not seem convenient. However, not everything is so bad.

The screens of the P8 and P8 Lite are different. In the flagship, the company supplied a 5.2" panel with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, and in its simplified version - a 5" display with 1280x720 pixels. Viewing angles are good in both cases. Smartphones have slightly different color reproduction, but both tend to be a little colder. However, this is not easy to notice, and in the options there is an adjustment of the color temperature. In a word, if you do not find fault with trifles, then there is practically nothing to scold the displays for.

Software

Both smartphones are based on the EMUI version 3.1 firmware based on the Android 5.0.1 Lollipop operating system. Compared to 3.0, which we described in detail in the Honor 6 Plus review, not much has changed, but I'm still not too lazy and will talk about the interesting features available in the firmware. To begin with, the same shell does not guarantee the same appearance of the interface: themes on smartphones are preinstalled with different ones.

screenshots from Huawei P8

Like iOS, Flyme and MIUI, EMUI does not have a separate application menu, placing all icons on desktops. There are several flipping effects to choose from, you can set up automatic wallpaper change, as well as their change by shaking. It is also allowed to change the desktop grid (4x5, 5x4, 5x5). Swipe down from top to bottom opens the smartphone search. On the lock screen of information and icons at least, there is a button to launch the camera. A swipe from the bottom up from the edge of the display opens a small menu with player controls, access to settings and icons for a voice recorder, calculator, flashlight and camera.

Huawei P8 pre-installed software

pre-installed software Huawei P8 Lite

In addition to Google software and a few third-party applications (Yandex search utility with a very informative home page, Opera browser, WPS Office, VKontakte client), many Huawei-authored applications are loaded on smartphones. The functionality of most of them is quite expected and obvious, but some are worth dwelling on in more detail. "Phone Manager" contains a scanner for various harmful things like unused files and various garbage, a utility to speed up work, several links to "Settings", as well as a tool for setting a password for applications.

The "Director" program allows you to create a network of two to four P8s (the P8 Lite does not have it) and shoot videos from several angles at once. "Magnifier" allows you to use your smartphone's camera as a magnifying glass with a magnification of up to 2.5 times. Lock Screen app locks your screen, a surprisingly useless app that's only useful if your lock button breaks. "Huawei Device" opens the site shop.huawei.ru in the browser, which is already the home page of all pre-installed browsers.

The main strength of all Chinese firmware is a huge number of settings. Let's take a look at the respective app and see what EMUI has to offer. In P8, in the "More" section of the "Wireless networks" section, there is a story about Connectivity + technology, consisting of Wi-Fi + (smart switching between Wi-Fi and cellular network) and Signal + (improved cellular reception). And if Wi-Fi + is at least somehow configured (it can be turned on or off), then Signal + has no settings. This is not the case in P8 Lite, but there are NFC settings (the simplified version, unlike the flagship, supports this technology).

"Home screen style" offers a choice between "Normal" and "Simple", aimed at senior citizens and reminiscent of the interface of granny phones. In the "Screen" you can change the color temperature, as well as add the name of the operator and network speed to the address bar. P8 Lite also allows you to "enhance the clarity in the sun", which means that I could not figure out in the Siberian autumn. In "Sound" the only interesting thing is the DTS mode, which only the P8 has. There are no multimedia speaker settings, but it already plays quite loudly, although it does not shine with quality. In "Memory" you can choose the default save location - internal memory or SD card. In the "Battery", in addition to the discharge graphs, it is possible to add a percentage charge level to the curtain. The "Energy saving" section allows you to select the power consumption mode - "Energy saving" (turns the smartphone into a dialer), "Smart" and "Productive" (in P8 Lite it is "Normal"). There are also power optimization features.

In "Screen lock and passwords", the only interesting thing is the ability to unlock the smartphone using any Bluetooth device (smart bracelet, for example), which is available only for P8. The "Protected applications" item allows you to allow programs to continue working after blocking (by default, many programs are prohibited from doing this, that is, they are not protected, this increases the period of work without recharging). The choice of applications by default is hidden in the settings of the "Manage applications" item. The item "Network applications" allows you to choose which programs can access the Internet - a kind of firewall.

The curious item "Speech recognition" is only in P8. It allows you to access your smartphone without even seeing it, and then ask him to call someone or ring himself. Alas, the function understands commands only in English, so in Russia it is unlikely to be useful to anyone. The "Movements" item contains typical gestures like muting the phone by flipping the phone, answering a call by holding it to the ear, moving icons by shaking, turning on the screen with a double-tap, opening applications by drawing letters on the screen off. The item "Navigation panel" offers to change the order of virtual buttons and add a curtain opening button to them, and the "One-handed control" section allows you to enable / disable the ability to reduce the working area of the screen and move the keyboard to the edge of the screen. In "More" you can find the "Control Button" (a special key that opens a menu duplicating virtual buttons), "Smart Screenshot" (only for P8, details below) and a glove mode (for P8 Lite it works much better than P8).

About "Smart Screenshot". This is the only implementation of Rich Touch technology, which Huawei compared with the advent of resistive displays and MultiTouch due to its revolutionary nature at the time of the P8 announcement. Its essence is that the screen determines not only the place of touch, but also what you touched it with - the end of your finger or the second phalanx. Double-tapping it allows you to take a screenshot, and by drawing a closed shape, you can take a screenshot of only the circled part of the screen. This is not only not very convenient (you won’t be able to do it with one hand) and completely useless (you can crop the screenshot when you get it in the usual way), but it also doesn’t work well (if a double hit on the screen is almost always recognized, then I managed to draw a closed figure only from the sixth or seventh time). If I were too lazy to write all this, I could rightly say that EMUI has many settings and features, offering a lot of convenient and useful features. At the same time, it does not look overloaded and does not force the user to spend hours figuring out all its intricacies. Good shell. The themes and background images were especially successful.

About sound. Evgeny Makarov, editor-in-chief of the site: “If we compare the sound of P8 Lite and P8, then the older model plays significantly better. The P8 Lite model lacks low-frequency elaboration, the stereo effect clearly divides a rather narrow stage into two parts, which makes it difficult to perceive some compositions as a whole, there are problems with the volume margin and high frequencies. In P8 without DTS effect, the main emphasis is on the middle, with the reproduction of the scene, which also does not differ in width, something is also wrong - the channels do not play in tandem, but somehow on their own. Detailing is not bad, highs are good, there is a margin of volume. With DTS, the Denon D600 headphones turn into miserable Beats - the emphasis is stupidly on the bass. There are no sound settings in the stock player, no equalizer.

Camera

screenshots from Huawei P8

The Huawei P8 camera is a 13 MP RGBW sensor with f/2.0 aperture. Huawei at a press conference noted that it does not stick out of the smartphone case, which is now rare. This is true, however, in my sample, the flash rim sticks out of the case a little, but this is more of a build defect. There is nothing extraordinary in the camera application, except for the "Light" mode intended for freezelight. It's amazing that Huawei paid attention to such a small thing. You can also take a picture by lowering the volume twice while the display is off. It is not required to wake up the smartphone or unlock it, which makes the process very fast, the smartphone manages to do it in 1.5 seconds. The quality of the pictures is good, the camera is not afraid of any abundance of small details, or bright colors, or anything else. The noise cancellation that Huawei promised to accomplish with the help of white light traps in the camera sensor really succeeded. In a word, the Huawei P8 camera will be able to take a good shot, if not always, then almost always. The image quality of the Huawei P8 Lite is slightly worse, but still more than decent for its segment. There is no "Light" mode, but there is photography by reducing the volume. Both devices have difficulty setting the white balance. The P8 tries to make the shot warmer, while the P8 Lite takes the color temperature in the opposite direction (I was especially struck by the shot of an orange flower, which for some reason turned red on the P8 Lite). The P8 Lite is almost blind in poor lighting conditions, it can't even focus. Also, the younger version lacks saturation and contrast, which is noticeable next to the P8.

Huawei P8 and P8 Lite:

Huawei P8 and P8 Lite

As for the front cameras, the 8-megapixel P8 module will allow you to see your face in selfies in great detail. The 5-megapixel front camera of the P8 Lite shoots worse, but not enough to scold her. Also a good camera.

Huawei P8 and P8 Lite

For video, the Huawei P8 has optical image stabilization that can be combined with digital. This bunch is very effective, but it leads to strong smooth vibrations of parts of the picture relative to each other. It looks like you got drunk. There is a touch focus and a focus following the subject, but the second one does not work very effectively. In general, the video sequence is pleasant, and the sound is captured qualitatively. The P8 Lite does not have optical image stabilization, digital, apparently, is still there, since the picture practically does not shake. The subject-tracking autofocus again doesn't work very well, and the video tends to constantly break into squares, as if Huawei has applied some very aggressive video compression algorithms.

Performance and Benchmarks

Huawei is one of the few companies that put their own processors in their smartphones. Besides her, only Apple, Samsung and LG do this (her experiments with NUCLUN, however, have so far been limited to the failed G3 Screen phablet). P8 is equipped with HiSilicon Kirin 930 processor (8 cores, 64 bits, 4x2 GHz + 4x1.5 GHz). P8 Lite is equipped with a simpler Kirin 620 (8 cores, 1.2 GHz). Our P8 has 16 GB of built-in and 3 GB of RAM (7 GB and 2 GB are at the user's disposal), in nature there are modifications with other volumes. The P8 Lite has 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of ROM (7 GB and 1 GB are available to the user, respectively). Huawei is often criticized for using its own chipsets instead of more popular and powerful solutions from Qualcomm, Samsung and MediaTek. However, by consistently developing the semiconductor business, the company was able to achieve good performance. At least Asphalt 8 goes perfectly with maximum graphics and effects, and the frame rate in Unkilled, although not maximum with better detail, allows you to play comfortably. As for the P8 Lite and its Kirin 620, everything is not so rosy there, but this is not a flagship either. You can play Unkilled there only with medium settings, because the maximum ones are accompanied by constant fps drops to single-digit values (a tautology, right?). In Asphalt 8, you can still play at the maximum, but the low frame rate (about 20 fps) will be noticeable. As for simple games, they are easy for both smartphones. Moreover, due to the different resolutions (1080p and 720p), the younger model gives out 2-3 fps more in them (for example, in Lara Croft: Relic Run and Angry Birds 2).

Huawei P8 and P8 Lite

I do not see any point in writing all the results in all benchmarks in words and numbers, I will limit myself to screenshots.

Huawei P8 runs

A 30-minute run of Huawei P8 in Stability Test and CPU Spy Reborn showed that slow cores spent 74% of the time at maximum frequency, and never dropped below 1200 MHz. What happened to the frequency of fast cores at that time is unknown, but the smartphone warmed up solidly - it was not easy to keep the metal case at a temperature of 45 degrees. In "Smart" mode, the processor almost always worked at a frequency of 1017 MHz (again, we are talking about a slow cluster), sometimes getting out at 1305 MHz. As a result, the temperature was 40 degrees, which is already much better.

Huawei P8 Lite runs

The difference between "Easy" and "Smart" modes in Huawei P8 Lite is less significant, and frequencies below 900 MHz are not used at all under load. The smartphone both times heated up to 42-43 degrees, but in the hands it felt far from being as hot as the P8 - thanks to the plastic case, which transfers heat much more slowly.

video discharge for Huawei P8

About autonomy. Huawei P8 has a 2680 mAh battery, P8 Lite, despite the thicker case, has 2200 mAh. Thanks to the weaker processor and smaller screen in the P8 Lite, the results shown by them are close. In 30 minutes in Asphalt 8, the P8 was discharged by 15%, and the movie from 100% to 5% took a little more than 7 hours. The discharge of P8 Lite in Asphalt 8 in 30 minutes amounted to the already familiar 15%, and the smartphone was able to play video for 6.5 hours. The results are completely typical, nothing supernatural, nothing terrible. Charging every night is about P8 and P8 Lite.

video discharge for Huawei P8 Lite

As for Huawei's many innovations in signal quality, I couldn't verify the specific promises made by the company during the press conference in London, but I noticed that the P8 holds a 4G network much better than others.

conclusions

Any smartphone has its advantages and disadvantages, and our today's characters are no exception. The disadvantages of Huawei P8 include only an average battery and not the most powerful processor (although its power is sufficient in most cases), but it has serious advantages in the form of a good camera, high-quality screen and good design. The P8 Lite is simplified in every way, and on some points, I think Huawei has gone too far in simplifying. The P8 and P8 Lite prices are 34,990 and 17,990 rubles, respectively. In our opinion, both price tags are somewhat overpriced. What do you think?

A simplified version of the company's new flagship

While the flagship of Huawei's premium family of fashion models, the Huawei P8 smartphone, introduced about two months ago in London, is just about to go on sale, we got the opportunity to test its younger brother, a simplified model called P8 Lite. It should be noted that in the previous P6 and P7 series there was no special "light" version, its role was played by models from another subfamily - for example, Huawei Ascend G6, which is a simplified version of the flagship model Ascend P6. So the release of the P8 Lite modification can be considered the first experience of a Chinese company in terms of “splitting” one model range into several different versions (by the way, the P8 series will also include a model with an extremely large screen P8 Max).

Since the flagship Huawei P8 itself has not been in our test lab yet, we will not directly compare these two models with each other, although it is clear that the P8 Lite version is not among the devices of the upper segment, just look at its characteristics.

Appearance and usability

Since Huawei's P-series has always been primarily fashion, the appearance of devices in this line is usually given the most attention by developers. The first smartphones of the series (P1 and P6) were generally record holders in their time for the [minimum] thickness, and even now the novelties of this family remain among the thinnest fashion models on the mobile device market.

The same epithets are fully applicable to the simplified version of P8 Lite: the smartphone not only has a small thickness, but also stands out for its high level of performance, as well as the beauty of its appearance. As a result, the Huawei P8 Lite smartphone looks much more expensive than you might expect from a model of its level and position.

In terms of design, the device is made in the same style as its older brother P8. This time, the developers decided to abandon the glass panels, no matter how beautiful they look, and turned to more practical materials: the flagship is made of metal, and its simplified version P8 Lite received a plastic case with a metallized rim (coated plastic).

The rim, it should be noted, has finally completed its transformation, closing in a closed circuit. Now this design element completely covers the entire side perimeter of the case, including the bottom end. All previous models of the Ascend P series also had shiny sidewalls, but they never covered the bottom end, and now the design looks finally finished.

Both the metallized bezel and the plastic back panel all have a kind of texturing on their surfaces, as if they had been walked over with very rough sandpaper, leaving deep scratches. All surfaces are matte, and although it does not look glamorous, it turns out to be very practical. At least, there are no fingerprints left on the bezel or on the back cover at all. Due to its small size, light weight and thin case, the smartphone is quite comfortable in the hand, although we must admit that the bezel is still slippery enough to hold in your fingers.

Housing Huawei P8 Lite is made in the form of a non-separable candy bar, the back cover is non-removable. Accordingly, all cards are inserted into the side slots, assembled on the right side of the device. There are two card slots in total, and one of them can be used both for installing a microSD memory card and for placing a second Nano-SIM SIM card. However, the second SIM card and the microSD card in the device will not be able to function at the same time, which is not very convenient - the user will have to choose. As for the main SIM card, there is a separate connector for it that supports the Micro-SIM standard. All cards are habitually stacked on the corresponding truss-sleds and removed with the help of a paperclip key.

It should be noted that the right side of the Huawei P8 Lite case turned out to be oversaturated with elements: in addition to the mentioned card slots, all the mechanical hardware buttons are clustered here - locks and volume controls. All keys are metallized, have an unnecessarily soft and supple course. At the same time, the lock button stands out noticeably and is easy to find blindly, but the volume rocker, on the contrary, is almost impossible to find by touch, so you will have to look at the smartphone every time until you finally get used to it. In the end, you can get used to it, but here the designers clearly sacrificed practicality for the sake of the image.

As a result, the left side of the device turned out to be completely empty, since the Micro-USB connector and the audio output are traditionally placed here on the upper and lower ends. Micro-USB located at the bottom, unfortunately, does not support connecting devices in USB OTG mode. Symmetrical grilles are cut out on both sides of it, but only one of them serves to output sound from the speaker (the second one is either made only for beauty, or hides the speaking microphone).

At the top end, respectively, there is a 3.5 mm minijack connector for headphones / headset, as well as a hole for the second, auxiliary microphone. There are no plugs and covers on the Huawei P8 Lite connectors, the smartphone is not protected from water. There is also no attachment for a strap on the case.

As for the front and rear panels, everything is familiar and familiar here. The front is completely covered with a flat protective glass without sides - most likely, this is Corning Gorilla Glass 3. In the upper part, in addition to sensors and a camera, you can see a round LED event indicator that indicates the status of charging and the presence of incoming messages.

There are no touch buttons in the lower part under the screen, all buttons are virtual, so their set and relative position can be changed to your taste in the corresponding section of the settings menu.

On the back side, a separate block highlights the main camera module with its own LED flash, which, using the installed program, can function as a flashlight.

In Russian retail, the smartphone will be presented in two colors: black, as in our photos, and white, where both the back and front panel remain light, and the metal side frame acquires a golden hue. There are no other differences between the modifications.

Screen

The Huawei P8 Lite smartphone is equipped with an IPS sensor matrix combined with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protective glass. The screen dimensions are 62 × 110 mm, the diagonal is 5 inches, and the resolution is 1280 × 720 pixels. Accordingly, the pixel density is 294 ppi.

The frame around the display is not so thin, the width from the screen border to the edge of the case on the sides is just under 4 mm. The width of the top and bottom edges is approximately 16 mm.

The brightness of the display can be adjusted manually, or you can use automatic adjustment based on the operation of the light sensor. Multi-touch technology allows you to handle 10 simultaneous touches. The smartphone also has a proximity sensor that blocks the screen when you bring the smartphone to your ear. The screen can be activated by double tapping on the glass, work with gloves is supported.

A detailed examination using measuring instruments was carried out by the editor of the "Monitors" and "Projectors and TV" sections Alexey Kudryavtsev. Here is his expert opinion on the screen of the test sample.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are no worse than those of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) screen (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the off screens (on the left is Nexus 7, on the right is Huawei P8 Lite, then they can be distinguished by size):

The screen of Huawei P8 Lite is even slightly darker (brightness in photos is 124 versus 126 for Nexus 7). The ghosting of reflected objects in the screen of Huawei P8 Lite is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen (more specifically, between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix) (OGS type screen - One Glass Solution). Due to the smaller number of borders (glass/air type) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better in conditions of strong external illumination, but their repair in case of cracked external glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be changed. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (slightly worse in efficiency than the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are removed more easily, and appear at a slower rate than in the case of ordinary glass.

With manual brightness control and with a white field displayed in full screen, the maximum brightness value was about 395 cd / m², the minimum was 12 cd / m². The maximum brightness is quite high, which means that, given the excellent anti-reflective properties, readability even on a sunny day outdoors should be at a good level. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable value. In the presence of automatic brightness control by light sensor (it is located in the upper left corner on the front panel). In automatic mode, when the ambient light conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. This function depends on the position of the brightness slider. If it is 100%, then in complete darkness the auto-brightness function reduces the brightness to 105 cd / m² (a little too much), in an office lit by artificial light (about 400 lux) it sets it to 286 cd / m² (it could have been less), in a very bright environment (corresponds to lighting on a clear day outdoors, but without direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or a little more) the brightness increases to 395 cd / m² (to the maximum - it is necessary); if the adjustment is about 50%, then the values are as follows: 12, 124 and 395 cd / m² (ideal combination), the regulator at 0% - 12, 31 and 205 cd / m² (the last two values \u200b\u200bare slightly underestimated, which is logical). It turns out that the auto-brightness function works absolutely adequately and allows the user to customize their work to individual requirements. At any brightness level, there is virtually no backlight modulation, so there is no screen flicker.

This smartphone uses an IPS type matrix. Micrographs show a typical IPS subpixel structure:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of microphotographs of screens used in mobile technology.

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift even with large deviations of the view from the perpendicular to the screen and without inverting (except for the very darkest when deviating along one diagonal) shades. For comparison, here are photographs in which the same images are displayed on the screens of Huawei P8 Lite and Nexus 7, while the brightness of the screens was initially set to about 200 cd / m², and the color balance on the camera was forcibly switched to 6500 K. A white field is perpendicular to the screens:

Note the acceptable uniformity of brightness and color tone of the white field. And a test picture:

The color reproduction is good, the saturation is normal, the color balance differs insignificantly. Now at an angle of about 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors have not changed much on both screens, but on the Huawei P8 Lite, the contrast has decreased to a greater extent due to the strong lightening of blacks, and signs of inversion of the darkest shades also began to appear. And the white box:

The brightness at an angle of the screens has decreased (at least 4 times, based on the difference in shutter speed), but the Huawei P8 Lite screen is still lighter (brightness in photos is 240 versus 233 for Nexus 7). The black field, when deviated diagonally, is highlighted strongly and acquires a purple hue or remains approximately neutral gray. The photos below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is the same!):

And from another angle:

With a perpendicular view, the uniformity of the black field is not ideal, since closer to the edge the black is highlighted in places:

And with a different location of the on-screen buttons:

Contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is normal - about 870:1. The response time for the black-white-black transition is 21 ms (14 ms on + 7 ms off). The transition between grayscale 25% and 75% (according to the numerical value of the color) and back in total takes 29 ms. The gamma curve constructed from 32 points with an equal interval according to the numerical value of the shade of gray did not reveal a blockage either in the highlights or in the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.20, which is equal to the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the real gamma curve almost does not deviate from the power dependence:

Color gamut close to sRGB:

The spectra show that the matrix filters moderately mix the components to each other:

As a result, visually the colors have a natural saturation. The balance of shades on the gray scale is good, since the color temperature is not much higher than the standard 6500 K, and the deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) is close to 10, which is considered an acceptable indicator for a consumer device. At the same time, the color temperature and ΔE change little from shade to shade - this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance does not matter much there, and the measurement error of color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

This device has the ability to adjust the color balance by adjusting the hue warmer-colder.

Curves in the charts above Without corr. correspond to the results without any color balance correction, and the curves Corr.- data obtained after shifting the correction slider to the "warm" side as far as it will go. It can be seen that the change in balance corresponds to the expected result, since the color temperature has practically become equal to the standard value in most of the gray scale, but ΔE, unfortunately, has increased noticeably. There is no point in making adjustments.

To summarize: the screen has a fairly high maximum brightness and has good anti-glare properties, so the device can be used outdoors without any problems even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level. It is permissible to use the mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works adequately. Also, the advantages of the screen include the presence of an oleophobic coating, the absence of flicker and an air gap in the layers of the screen, a color balance close to the standard, and a color gamut close to sRGB. The disadvantages are the low stability of black to the deviation of the gaze from the perpendicular to the plane of the screen. Nevertheless, taking into account the importance of the characteristics for this particular class of devices, the screen quality can be considered high.

Sound

Huawei P8 Lite sounds good. Contrary to the expectations associated with the presence of two symmetrically located grilles at the bottom end, there is only one main speaker installed here. It produces a sound that is quite clear, bright, pleasant to the ear, without noticeable distortions and impurities, but the upper bar for maximum volume is low. Obviously, that is why even at the maximum volume level, no wheezing appears in the dynamics. The same can be said about the sound in the headphones: the sound is bright, juicy, pleasant to the ear, but there are not too many low frequencies and the maximum level is lower than we would like. In conversational dynamics, the interlocutor's speech, timbre and intonation remain recognizable, there are no complaints here. To control the sound quality in the proprietary player, there are no manual settings, it remains to be limited to automatic ones.

There is an FM radio in the smartphone, it works only with connected headphones. The device cannot record telephone conversations using regular means.

Camera

Huawei P8 Lite is equipped with two modules of digital cameras with a resolution of 13 and 5 megapixels. For front shooting, a 5-megapixel module with a wide-angle lens with f / 2.4 aperture, a focal length of 22 mm and a viewing angle of 88 ° without autofocus and its own flash is used. Among the settings there is the possibility of tracking a smile, as well as shooting using the hardware volume key, including when the screen is locked (for this you need to double-tap the volume down, but the shooting will be carried out on the main camera located at the back of the smartphone). Also here you can mention a special mode "Perfect Selfie", in which you can apply additional effects to photos (enlarge eyes, whiten skin, etc.). By the way, the updated version of the “I Shine” function automatically recognizes the face of the owner of the device and applies a special filter to it in accordance with the preset settings, while all other faces in the picture are processed according to the standard algorithm. A personal approach to photo processing allows owners of Huawei smartphones to emphasize their individuality (in any case, the company's marketers think so).

The main camera has a fast f/2.0 lens with a diameter of 7mm and a focal length of 28mm. It uses a 13-megapixel sensor, autofocus is implemented (it is possible to focus on a moving object), there is a single LED flash. The proprietary camera settings menu here is exactly the same as in previous models of the corresponding level, such as Ascend G7. Most of the menu functions are collected in a single vertical scroll, and additional shooting modes are selected by pressing the button in the upper right corner. In addition to the automatic shooting mode, there are several specific modes, such as Good photos, Decoration, Panorama, HDR etc. With the help of a separate mode, you can play around and adjust the focus on different areas of an already captured photograph.

The camera can shoot video at resolutions up to 1080p, an example of a test video is shown below.

  • Clip #1 (19 MB, 1920×1080, 30 fps)

To distant plans, the sharpness drops a little.

The details in the image are slightly spoiled by software processing.

Good field and plan sharpness.

Large inscriptions are clearly visible, and car numbers are already difficult.

With the removal of the plan, the foliage practically does not merge.

Sometimes in the pictures you can find somewhat incomprehensible areas of blur.

In room lighting, the camera copes with macro photography.

With good lighting, macro photography is even more successful for the camera.

The text is well done.

It’s impossible to call the camera unambiguously good, and the pictures for this price segment look quite ordinary, and in some places even worse than the budget Honor 4c. Not very accurate software processing immediately catches the eye, due to which details are lost, as well as a slight drop in sharpness with the removal of the plan, which is expressed in a slight soapiness. In addition to all of the above, the appearance of strange areas of blur, which resemble the blur that occurs at slow shutter speeds, and sometimes strange work with color, which is probably caused by an auto white balance error, confuses. For these reasons, the camera is only suitable for documentary shooting, while you should not count on good working out of fine details.

Telephone part and communications

The smartphone works as standard in modern 2G GSM and 3G WCDMA networks, and there is also support for fourth-generation LTE Cat4 networks (FDD-LTE: 800/1800/2100/2600 MHz), that is, the frequencies used in Russia are also supported. In practice, with SIM-cards of domestic operators Megafon and Beeline, the smartphone is registered and works in LTE networks.

The remaining network capabilities of the smartphone are standard: there is support for Bluetooth 4.0, only one Wi-Fi band (2.4 GHz), Wi-Fi Direct is supported, you can organize a wireless access point via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth channels. NFC technology is implemented, on its basis Huawei Beam's own data transfer technology works here. The Micro-USB 2.0 connector does not support connecting external devices via OTG.

The navigation module works with GPS/A-GPS, the domestic Glonass system is supported. The response speed of the navigation module does not cause delight, with a cold start, the satellites stay longer than usual. Among the sensors of the smartphone, a magnetic field sensor is implemented, on the basis of which the electronic compass of navigation mapping programs usually functions.

The smartphone supports two SIM-cards. All work with them in the menu is conveniently organized on one page, the settings are conveniently grouped, you just need to put a couple of checkmarks, and the choice is made. Everything is clear and intuitive. Perhaps this menu for managing work with two SIM-cards is the most convenient of all previously encountered options.

You can assign any of the SIM cards as the main one for organizing voice calls, data transfer and sending SMS messages; when dialing a number, you can also select the desired card using the corresponding buttons. A SIM card in any slot can work with 3G / 4G networks, however, only one of the cards can operate in this mode at the same time. To change the assignments of card slots, you do not need to swap places - this can be done directly from the phone menu. Working with two SIM-cards is organized according to the usual Dual SIM Dual Standby standard, when both cards can be in active standby mode, but cannot work at the same time - there is only one radio module.

The branded interface is familiar and looks exactly the same as in previous new generation Huawei models. Starting with the seventh series, a timeline appeared in the notification menu, showing exactly the time of each event. There is still no separate menu for installed applications, all icons are evenly distributed across desktops, folder creation and widget installation are supported.

As before, a lot of attention is paid to working with gestures, all the settings for working with gestures are highlighted in a separate menu section. This includes both the usual double tapping on the glass, or a variety of turning and covering with the palm of your hand, as well as a variety of passes in the form of icons and letters, with which you can call individual applications and programs (for example, a player or a camera). A special software control button has not gone away either, which calls up a pop-up menu for quick access to some frequently used applications.

Performance

The hardware platform of Huawei P8 Lite is based on a fairly fresh eight-core single-chip system (SoC) HiSilicon Kirin 620, which is the company's first 64-bit system. The configuration of this solution includes eight Cortex-A53 processor cores with a frequency of up to 1.2 GHz and a Mali-T450MP4 GPU. That is, Kirin 620 competes with mid-range SoCs such as Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 and MediaTek MT6752.

The RAM of the smartphone is 2 GB. The device has 16 GB of flash memory, of which no more than 9.5 GB is available for the needs of the user. Memory can be expanded with a microSD card (the specs list a maximum of 32GB, but in reality our 64GB test card was perfectly recognized by the device). The mode of connecting external devices to the Micro-USB (OTG) port in the device is not supported.

According to the test results, the Kirin 620 platform proved to be a true middle peasant. In complex benchmarks, its results are close, and in graphics tests they turn out to be even lower than those of the slightly faster, but also unremarkable Qualcomm Snapdragon 615. But the MediaTek MT6752, which is related in positioning and competes with them, produces more than 40K points in the same AnTuTu, yes and in all other tests, she also scores higher.

Thus, the Huawei P8 Lite hardware platform showed average results, approximately at the level of 30K in AnTuTu v 5.x, while for top solutions this value is now from 45K and above. There is nothing special to add here, the platform is far in its capabilities from the most productive modern platforms that are installed in flagship solutions. The lot of devices with such a filling is a confident average level, nothing more. Nevertheless, the smartphone described today is sufficiently productive so that its capabilities are enough for some time to perform basic tasks; for demanding games, the capabilities of its graphics subsystem are clearly not enough.

Testing in the latest versions of AnTuTu and GeekBench 3 comprehensive benchmarks:

For convenience, we have summarized all the results obtained by us when testing a smartphone in the latest versions of popular benchmarks in tables. Several other devices from different segments are usually added to the table, also tested on similar latest versions of benchmarks (this is done only for a visual assessment of the received dry numbers). Unfortunately, within the framework of one comparison, it is impossible to present the results from different versions of benchmarks, so many worthy and relevant models remain “behind the scenes” due to the fact that they once passed the “obstacle course” on previous versions of test programs.

Testing the graphics subsystem in 3DMark gaming tests,GFXBenchmark, and Bonsai Benchmark:

When testing in 3DMark for the highest performing smartphones, it is now possible to run the application in Unlimited mode, where the rendering resolution is fixed at 720p and VSync is disabled (due to which the speed can rise above 60 fps).

Browser cross-platform tests:

As for benchmarks for evaluating the speed of the javascript engine, you should always make allowances for the fact that the results in them depend significantly on the browser in which they are launched, so that the comparison can only be truly correct on the same OS and browsers, and this possibility is available when testing not always. In the case of Android OS, we always try to use Google Chrome.

thermal images

Below is a thermal image of the back surface (upper image is on the right) obtained after 10 minutes of running a battery test in GFXBenchmark:

It can be seen that the heating is localized just above the center and closer to the right edge of the device, which apparently corresponds to the location of the SoC chip. According to the heat chamber, the maximum heating was 42 degrees, which is relatively little.

Video playback

To test the "omnivorous" when playing video (including support for various codecs, containers and special features, such as subtitles), we used the most common formats, which make up the bulk of the content available on the Web. Note that for mobile devices it is important to have support for hardware video decoding at the chip level, since it is most often impossible to process modern versions using processor cores alone. Also, do not expect everything from a mobile device to decode everything, since the leadership in flexibility belongs to the PC, and no one is going to challenge it. All results are summarized in a single table.

According to the test results, the subject was not equipped with all the necessary decoders that are necessary for the full playback of most of the most common multimedia files on the network. To successfully play them, you will have to resort to the help of a third-party player - for example, MX Player. True, it also needs to change the settings and manually install additional custom codecs, because now this player does not officially support the AC3 audio format.

Video output features tested Alexey Kudryavtsev.

We did not find the MHL interface, as well as Mobility DisplayPort in this smartphone, so we had to limit ourselves to testing the output of video files on the screen of the device itself. To do this, we used a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see “Methodology for testing video signal playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices) Red marks indicate possible problems associated with playback of the corresponding files.

According to the frame output criterion, the quality of video files playback on the screen of the smartphone itself is good, since frames (or groups of frames) can (but are not required) to be displayed with more or less uniform alternation of intervals and without frame drops. Except for 1080p files at 50 and 60 fps, which immediately or after a while start to be output as a slide show. When playing video files with a resolution of 1280 by 720 pixels (720p) on a smartphone screen, the image of the video file itself is displayed exactly along the border of the screen, one to one in pixels, that is, in its original resolution. The brightness range displayed on the screen corresponds to the standard range of 16-235 - in the shadows, only a couple of shades of gray do not differ in brightness from black, but all gradations of shades are displayed in the highlights.

Battery Life

Huawei P8 Lite has a 2200 mAh non-removable battery for modern smartphones. As a result, the smartphone showed quite modest results in battery life, although not entirely a failure. However, in normal operation, the device without recharging confidently lives up to night charging, this is the main thing. It is also worth noting that the testing was carried out without using any energy-saving features, and with them the smartphone is obviously able to last longer. As usual, in the settings of the proprietary energy-saving mode, Huawei smartphones have three different levels, from normal to the most economical.

Continuous reading in the FBReader program (with a standard, light theme) at the minimum comfortable brightness level (the brightness was set to 100 cd / m²) lasted no more than 11 hours until the battery was completely discharged, and with continuous viewing of video in high quality (720p), The same brightness level through the home Wi-Fi network, the device lasted only 7 hours. In gaming mode, the smartphone functioned for 3.5 hours. The total charging time is 2 hours 15 minutes.

Outcome

The recommended retail price of Huawei P8 Lite in Russia is 18 thousand rubles, in practice, the retail model can be found even a little cheaper. Despite the fact that the smartphone is a mid-range solution without any special claims, the device as a whole made a positive impression on us. As mentioned above, despite the positioning, this model looks both neat and stylish, and even somewhat noble. If we compare a smartphone with competitors of the same price level, then we must admit that Huawei P8 Lite is one of the prettiest and most comfortable mobile devices priced up to 20 thousand rubles. Pleasant-looking, strict and calm design, good ergonomics, high-quality materials, indisputable assembly - all this does not cause the slightest complaint. At the same time, the smartphone (for its level) is well equipped with hardware: there is a new 64-bit (not very productive, but stable and economical) platform, a bright screen with rich colors, and a pleasant speaker sound. But there are complaints about the network and communication capabilities: on the one hand, support for LTE and NFC is implemented, but on the other hand, there is no support for USB OTG and the 5 GHz Wi-Fi range, although, of course, you can live without them. I would also like to increase the battery life of the device, although, again, the smartphone’s battery is enough for everyday use scenarios, and for extreme situations, you can use energy-saving functions. Well, it is obvious that a small battery is a price to pay for an elegant thin body, so here everyone chooses what is important to him.

Huawei has already started selling the mid-range smartphone Huawei GR5 2017 in Ukraine, and you can already read its review on our website. It is followed by a slightly cheaper model, the reincarnation of Huawei P8 Lite, also with the prefix 2017. In addition to a more affordable price tag, the company decided to lure potential buyers with a bonus in the form of a portable battery, which will be given to the smartphone during the first week of sales.

What's this?

Huawei P8 Lite 2017 is a smartphone with a 5.2-inch IPS Full HD display, 64-bit octa-core processor, 3 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal memory, a hybrid tray for two SIM cards or SIM + MicroSD. The smartphone runs on the fresh Android 7.0 OS with the proprietary Huawei EMUI 5.0 shell.

Why is he interesting?

The insides of the Huawei P8 Lite 2017 are in many ways similar to the Huawei GR5 2017, but the screen has been reduced to 5.2 inches, and instead of metal, the body is made of plastic and glass. The same eight-core HiSilicon Kirin 655 processor and 3 GB of RAM are used. The drive has been reduced to 16 GB, and the second camera eye has disappeared from the rear panel. There is a fingerprint scanner, the smartphone is powered by a 3000 mAh battery. Of the interesting features is the latest version of Android 7.0 with an updated EMUI 5.0 shell (GR5 2017 has not yet received an update and runs on Android 6.0 with EMUI 4.1).

How does it look and fit?

Despite the absence of metal in the case, the smartphone looks pretty decent, although you can’t call it original. The front and back of the case is covered with 2.5D protective glass. On the chin is the Huawei logo, above the screen are sensors, earpiece, front camera and LED indicator. The layout is standard. The smartphone will be available in black, gold and white colors. It seems to me that the white version will be the most practical due to the fact that the prints on it are not so visible.

The frame around the perimeter of the body is made of plastic and in the white version it is painted "under the metal", in other versions it is the same color as the body. The location of all functional elements is absolutely standard. On the right side are the volume buttons and the power button with a recess:

An additional microphone and a standard 3.5 mm jack are placed on the upper end:

On the left is a hybrid tray into which you can shove either two nano SIM cards or one SIM plus MicroSD:

Not the best solution with only 16 GB of internal memory, so something will have to be sacrificed:

On the bottom side - a standard set: a group of round holes, under which are a microphone and a speaker. In the middle is the MicroUSB connector:

The back cover is made of glass with rounded edges. It is almost completely flat, only the fingerprint scanner is groped:

Nothing sticks out, the camera module is neat and is located in the upper left corner of the case:

Huawei engineers managed to make the design of the smartphone P8 Lite 2017 comfortable and balanced. They are convenient to use. And there are no complaints about the build quality, even despite the use of plastic and glass. The smartphone does not look cheap at all.

How good is the screen?

The screen of the smartphone can be called compact by today's standards: "only" 5.2 inches. This is really not much considering that the native Chinese market is dominated by Android smartphones with a screen diagonal of 5.5 inches and the Apple iPhone. Resolution - 1920x1080, pixel density - 423 ppi. A high-quality bright IPS-matrix is used, the viewing angles are maximum, but at the extreme points the picture will fall into blue shades. There is a margin of brightness and a very decent one. There is an oleophobic coating, but not of the best quality, the screen quickly collects fingerprints and fingers begin to glide poorly on its surface:

The smartphone screen has a really impressive margin of brightness, which was confirmed by hardware measurement using a colorimeter. The maximum brightness is 564.095 cd/m 2 , so the screen will remain legible even in summer. Black field brightness 0.491 cd/m 2 , contrast ratio: 1149:1. The utility for color correction has not gone anywhere. She received cosmetic changes to match the updated shell and Android 7.0, but functionally everything remained unchanged:

Graphs obtained using the colorimeter:

Comparison with competitors:

Device name Brightness of the white field,
cd/m2
Black field brightness

Contrast
Huawei P8 Lite 2017 564.095 0.491 1149:1
Huawei GR5 2017 497.307 0.397 1253:1
Moto Z Play 361.047 0
LG G4 Stylus 306.856 0.358 857:1
Meizu MX6 355.976 0.48 742:1

What about performance and autonomy?

The hardware stuffing of Huawei P8 Lite 2017 almost completely coincides with that of GR5 2017, which was reviewed last week. Inside is the same 64-bit HiSilicon Kirin 655, which includes 8 cores with a clock speed of up to 2.1 GHz and Mali-T830 MP2 graphics plus 3 GB of RAM - 3 GB. The filling is very good, as for the middle price segment, modern toys go without problems:

The only, but very significant difference from Huawei GR5 2017 is 16 GB of internal memory, which is only enough to install the necessary applications and a couple of games. The tray is hybrid, so future users will have to decide on priorities. The smartphone supports cards up to 128 GB. In terms of wireless interfaces, the situation is also similar to GR5 2017: 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, FM tuner and GPS. Everything works without problems, but still I would really like a faster dual-band Wi-Fi module. The battery capacity is 3000 mAh, in normal "everyday" mode with about 20 min. conversations, regular synchronization via Wi-Fi and 3G, about half an hour of games / video online and communication in social networks, the smartphone is enough for one and a half to two days.

For those who want to know more

The smartphone uses a 16nm 64-bit HiSilicon Kirin 655 processor developed by its own semiconductor division, which includes two blocks of four ARM Cortex-A53 cores: four operate at a maximum frequency of 2.1 GHz, and four more at 1.7 GHz. Graphics accelerator - ARM Mali-T830 MP. The amount of RAM is 3 GB. Benchmark results comparable to Huawei GR5 2017:

Is the interface user friendly?

The smartphone received a fresh version of Android 7.0 Nougat and an updated proprietary shell EMUI 5.0, which is worth mentioning in a little more detail. The changes affected not only the appearance, but also some basic functions. The entire shell received a white and blue design and, in general, looks more like stock Android. According to Huawei, it has become simpler, more convenient (most actions are performed in 2-3 clicks) and looks more harmonious:

In the standard form, desktops look familiar to EMUI. All applications and widgets are located on desktops. Typical approach for Chinese manufacturers:

But now it's possible to switch to a more familiar Android look with a separate application menu. In it, applications can be sorted in different ways, there is a list of four recommended (frequently used) applications and a search:

Also, the search for a smartphone has not disappeared anywhere directly from the desktop, which is launched by swiping down (not from the top edge):

Another significant change was the notification and switch panel, which no longer consists of two separate tabs, but is very similar to the stock one. Directly from it, you can reply to messages and block notifications:

And the application manager is now closer to stock with the ability to pin some applications and close all (or unnecessary):

The settings menu has been slightly redrawn, but the organization remains the same:

As well as settings for working with two SIM-cards:

The ability to customize the navigation buttons is still in place:

In addition to unlocking the device, the fingerprint scanner can be used for additional functions and blocking personal data or individual applications:

The fingerprint registration itself remained in the standard form:

An additional on-screen control button also migrated to the updated shell from previous versions:

It can be moved to any point on the screen:

And the ability to switch to the reduced screen mode for more convenient one-handed operation:

The traditional smartphone manager for Huawei is also present, albeit in a redrawn version. Local power saving modes:

The corporate music player has not changed much, everything is familiar and understandable. The smartphone itself sounds quite good in not too tight headphones and is quite suitable as a player for most ordinary users:

And a proprietary fitness utility with standard functionality:

Additional screenshots:

How are things with the camera?

The main camera of the smartphone is equipped with a 12-megapixel matrix and f/2.2 aperture optics, it shoots video at 1920x1080, 30 frames per second. Front camera - 8 MP. On the main screen, you can switch from photo mode to video mode, set the flash mode, switch the camera, select a filter, or go to the gallery:

The transition to the shooting modes occurs with a swipe from left to right, to the settings - from right to left:

In general, the camera is very good, especially considering the price range, autofocus is fast and it is quite possible to get decent pictures in the dark:

What are the competitors?

The smartphone will cost UAH 6500 and more expensive brands like Samsung, Sony, LG and the like have nothing to offer in this price segment. Compatriots from China have more real competitors. Below are a few possible alternatives that first came to mind. I'm sure that readers in the comments will offer something else. Lenovo Vibe K5 Note Pro boasts a larger screen, a metal body and a 3500 mAh battery. Huawei P8 Lite 2017 wins in terms of performance, quality of the main camera and software. The Huawei shell is really more convenient, and a more recent version of Android is used. The price tag is similar.

You can now buy Meizu MX6 cheaper by 200 UAH. It is much more interesting in terms of performance, again, a metal body and a slightly better main camera. On the side of Huawei - the presence of a slot for a memory card (albeit a hybrid one, but it is) and a more recent version of Android with a convenient shell. Meizu is usually sluggish in updating their smartphones. Our review of the Meizu MX6.

The third candidate is 500 UAH more expensive, this is Xiaomi Mi5. Its so-called "standard" version with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory now costs 7000 UAH. For this amount, you can get much more powerful hardware, a better main camera, a better screen, and a tactilely more comfortable body. Among the shortcomings - the lack of a slot for memory cards in any form, nuances with firmware (solved with straight hands) and black frames around the screen, which annoy some perfectionists. Review of Xiaomi Mi5.

You can also look at Huawei's neighbors in the line: a very fresh GT5 2017 with a larger screen, a metal case and a dual main camera. Price - 8000 UAH. Or Huawei GT3, which is cheaper by 500 UAH and has a slightly more modest hardware, but at the same time received a metal case.

In the dry matter

Huawei P8 Lite 2017 is definitely worth paying attention to those who choose a relatively small and inexpensive, but functional Android smartphone and are not yet ready to risk buying some Xiaomi or Meizu. The smartphone received a comfortable and pleasant to use case, a high-quality screen, a functional and fast fingerprint scanner, good middle-class hardware stuffing and a main camera. Separately, it is worth noting the latest version of Android and the updated shell, which received, albeit not so much, but quite useful improvements. Of the obvious shortcomings, the first thing that comes to mind is only 16 GB of internal memory, which is really small by today's standards, and a hybrid tray for SIM / MicroSD. The price tag for a smartphone will be UAH 6,500, and the smartphone will have competition in this range from compatriots. There are really devices a little more interesting in this price segment.

Bright screen and high-quality main camera

Huawei P8 Lite 2017 is definitely worth paying attention to those who choose a relatively small and inexpensive, but functional Android smartphone and are not yet ready to risk buying some Xiaomi or Meizu.

  • bright screen with good color reproduction;
  • high-quality (in its class) main camera;
  • good battery life;
  • fresh android version and fast shell.

2 reasons not to buy Huawei P8 Lite 2017:

  • hybrid tray for SIM / MicroSD with 16 GB of internal memory;

In April 2015, the Chinese firm Huawei introduced the P8 lite model. The smartphone is a "lite" version of the flagship Huawei P8. The "subsidiary" model differs in both external and internal features. As for the cost, the Huawei P8 Lite will cost almost half the price of the flagship P8. The flagship at the time of release cost about 30,000 rubles, respectively, the Lite version costs around 15-16 thousand rubles at the time of release. For 2017, the cost of the model has changed due to the release of Huawei P8 Lite (2017) and is 8-11.5 thousand, depending on the color and store.

The mobile phone is supplied with the following configuration:
Charger.
USB cable.
Warranty card.
Instructions for use.
Interestingly, the “lite” version has lost the standard headset in the package.

The device has the following dimensions: 143 millimeters - the length of the device, width - 70.6 millimeters, and the thickness is 7.7 millimeters. The weight of the smartphone is 131 grams.

Design

The Huawei P8 Lite smartphone has an almost identical design to the P8, but in a rather simplified form. When creating the case, the manufacturer abandoned the use of metal - the smartphone became plastic. In all other respects, the "Light" version completely repeats the design of its "big brother".
Traditionally, the front of the smartphone is covered with glass, under which there is a five-inch display, above it on the right side, you can find the front camera peephole, in the center there is a speaker grill. Near the camera are proximity and light sensors. Under the display, there is only the Huawei logo. Interestingly, just like the Premium version of the P8, the Lite version is equipped with virtual function keys. On the right side of the smartphone there is a slot for SIM cards, power and volume buttons. There is nothing on the left.
The bottom edge of the smartphone is equipped with a connector for recharging and synchronization with a computer, and two multimedia speakers. They are located on the right and left side of the connector. Above, you can find a jack for connecting a headset or headphones.
The back surface of the phone has a texture reminiscent of roughly processed metal. Interestingly, the back can be made in both white and black color options. The main camera does not protrude from the body, and is protected by a glass insert. Near the protective insert is an LED responsible for the flash. Apart from the camera, there are no functional openings or devices on the back cover. It is decorated with the Huawei logo, and at the bottom of the back cover, you can find the certification and serial numbers of the device.

Display

The review of Huawei P8 Lite should be continued with a description of the screen of the device. It is a full-fledged IPS touch matrix, which is combined with a protective glass class Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The display diagonal is 5 inches, and the resolution is 1280 by 720 pixels. The screen features allow you to manually adjust the brightness level, there is also an automatic adjustment. The display recognizes up to 10 simultaneous touches. The proximity sensor allows you to lock the screen of the device as soon as it is brought to your ear. In order to activate the locked display, it must be tapped twice. A high-quality sensor recognizes touches made with gloves, which is quite convenient when using a smartphone in the winter.

Camera

The smartphone, like most modern mobile devices, is equipped with two cameras. Main and front. The rear camera has a resolution of 5 megapixels, the main one is 13 megapixels. The quality of the photos will not allow using the device as a professional camera, but it will be enough to get acceptable pictures in the daytime. The phone can shoot videos in 720 resolution. As for recording sound on video, it is quite acceptable in terms of quality. Implemented flash and autofocus functions. As for the front camera, its parameters are enough for video calls and selfies.
The application interface for using cameras has a wide range of a wide variety of settings. When shooting at night, noise and ripples may appear, which is inherent in mobile devices of this class.

Sound

As for the quality of the smartphone speaker, it is on top here. The sound is pleasant, at maximum volume there are no wheezing and distortion. The maximum volume level is not high enough. If you listen to music with headphones, you can feel the bright, juicy and high-quality sound. As for the sound quality of the conversational speaker, it allows you to find out the timbre and intonation of the interlocutor's voice, there are no extraneous noises and interference. The smartphone is equipped with a radio receiver, however, it only works with a connected headset.
For those who want to customize the sound “for themselves”, the standard smartphone player has a number of automatic settings. Manual adjustment of the sound is not provided in this model.

autonomy

The Huawei P8 Lite smartphone review, which is presented in this article, has a 2200 mAh non-removable battery. The phone in reading mode is able to work 11 hours without recharging, if you play three-dimensional games on the device, then the charge will last for 3 and a half hours, but watching the video will last for 7 hours. Also on the smartphone there are modes that allow you to save battery. Thanks to these parameters, the phone can last almost a day without recharging.

Performance

Smartphone Huawei P8 Lite is equipped with an eight-core 64-bit processor with a clock frequency of 1.2 GHz. The device has 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory. Of these, only nine and a half gigabytes are available to the user. If desired, the internal memory can be expanded by installing a memory card up to 32 GB. In terms of performance, the characteristics of the device allow you to run undemanding games and applications. Working with the device also does not raise any complaints: in normal operation, there are no freezes or slowdowns. As for performance tests, in AnTuTu, this figure is 30,000.

Network and operating system

Huawei P8 Lite is able to work in all modern network standards: 2G GSM and 3G WCDMA, and LTE Cat4. The phone supports NFC data transfer technology, which will make it possible to use the contactless payment function.
The phone is running Android 6.0 operating system. As standard, on top of Android, a proprietary graphical shell Emotion UI 3.0.5 is installed. It is worth noting that devices with the Emotion UI 3.1 version are on sale. However, later, the system is updated to a more recent version automatically.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it should be said that Huawei Ascend P8 Lite ale l21 turned out to be a rather interesting and controversial model. On the one hand, a plastic case, insufficiently high performance, and a mediocre camera, on the other hand, excellent sound, high build quality, and reasonable cost. The features of the smartphone are that it is more productive and more powerful than the Huawei Honor line of devices. This is largely due to the fact that Honor is a typical representative of the budget class of smartphones. Well, P8 Light, although "light", but still a version of the executive class phone.
