Comparing social media audiences. VKontakte user activity in numbers

Ever wondered how much Facebook is larger than Vkontakte? Or what are the Chinese doing without Twitter?

And we thought.

Practically each the Internet user is registered in a particular social network. Today these are not just communication tools, but entire media platforms owned by world-famous IT giants. Here are some of them.

Facebook

from left to right: Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskowitz and Chris Hughes

The most popular social network in the world needs no introduction... It was created by Mark Zuckerberg and his roommates Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskowitz and Chris Hughes. On February 4, 2004, a social network called Thefacebook was opened to Harvard students. The world launch took place on September 26, 2006.

Geography of distribution

according to Bitly Science Team

Today's Facebook got ubiquitous Spread. Of course, the popularity of the network differs in different countries. For example, in China it is prohibited, in North Korea things are no better, and in Russia Vkontakte and Odnoklassniki have pulled the blanket. Nevertheless, about 25 million users use Facebook in our country.

Lecture hall

in Russia, based on materials from Brand Analytics

QZone is the most popular social media site. China network.

Its audience is 755 million users, and this is second indicator among all social groups of the world.

Mostly men (57% versus 43% of women) from 26 to 30 years old sit in Qzone. For some reason, there is no data on those who are less than nineteen, or these are the features of the legislation, or they hide their age. :)

Owners

from left to right: founder Ma Huaten, executive vice president Seng Yi Lau

The network is owned by the telecommunications giant Tencent (messengers QQ and WeChat are also their work). By the way, the CEO of the company, founder Ma Huaten acquired 10.26% of the shares the familiar DST foundation, and this is the part of Mail.ru that is responsible for foreign investment.

Comparison

For more and visibility, we have summarized the above indicators into diagrams. Does everyone love charts? To estimate the real audience, they usually take the number of active users per month or per day.

the number of social network users who have shown activity in the last month

The fact that Facebook is the most popular in the world did not raise any questions. Such an advantage is striking, the number of active Facebook users is almost equal to the audience. everyone else mentioned social. networks in total.

capitalization of companies that own social networks

In this post I will give statistics on the data that users of the VKontakte social network indicated in their profiles. Under the cut, there is also an answer to a question of interest to many - how many active users are there in this social network? And, of course, a few words about how all this was put together.

Background

It all started with my reading habratopik. During the session, as you know, there is nothing to do, so I decided to learn some C # and get acquainted with the VK API.

Statistics collection process

Not all ids are valid: some users have been deleted, beautiful numbers have been blocked. To get a list of valid ids, it was decided to use a directory carefully made for search engines.

A library was used to parse the directory. The process is quite trivial, I see no point in describing it in detail.

The list of valid id as of June 18, 2011 contains 94 072 230 id out of 139 132 951 possible, that is, valid are 67,6% .

Distribution of valid id
(how many valid out of every million)

So, we have a list of valid id, we need to get profiles from it. To do this, we make a request to https://api.vkontakte.ru/method/getProfiles (one of the few methods that do not require authorization, and which are not subject to the limit of three requests per second) with uids parameters, where we indicate a list of 750 id (api allows a thousand, but when requesting the profiles of the last users, the requested address becomes too long), and fields, where we indicate all possible fields (uid, first_name, last_name, nickname, sex, bdate, city, country, timezone, photo,
photo_medium, photo_big, photo_rec, contacts, home_phone, mobile_phone, education,
university, university_name, faculty, faculty_name, graduation, rate, counters).

Executing requests in one thread only loads the channel by 100 KB / s, so I split the execution into 94 threads, each of which was tasked with loading a million profiles.

At that time, I did not take into account that the VK server does not always return the correct answer, so not all profiles were received. But receiving 0.3% of profiles ended with an error, which is insignificant for statistics.

All received profiles in JSON take 45 GB.

Since statistics for all accounts, including those who abandoned their profile two years ago and spammers, are of little interest, it was decided to get a list of all active users. To do this, cyclically in 20 threads (in order to guarantee to score all 10 megabits / s), we make requests to the same getProfiles for 750 users, but this time we request only the online field. At each iteration, we take a list of users who were not seen on the network at the previous iteration. This stage dragged on for 17 days (June 21 - July 7, it did not work further for technical reasons) in order to guarantee to capture the vast majority of active users. Due to the insufficient channel width, each user was checked every one and a half to three hours.

Growth of new active users by date

The total number of active users by date

As you can see, the increase in active users has become small enough to be neglected.

Actually, statistics (by active users)

Active users of VKontakte are 29,93% .

What I would like to do

  • Get a more accurate list of active users.
Unfortunately with my current channel this is not possible in a reasonable amount of time.
  • Get more information: number of friends, albums, photos, videos ...
To do this, you need to make one request per user, which, taking into account the limitation of three requests per second, will take about a year.
  • Build a social graph and design it beautifully.
Taking into account the recent opening of the friends list, this can be done. But again, there is a limit of three requests per second. According to my calculations, in order to completely clog a 10-megabit channel and pump out everything (about a terabyte) in 8.9 days, 41 accounts are needed. Also, do not forget about the computing power - it will take 10 ^ 24 iterations to calculate the shortest distance from each user to each, which is a bit too much.

On March 14-15, the i-COMference conference was held in Moscow. Albert Usmanov was one of the speakers at the event. He shared the latest statistics on VKontakte.

According to TNS Web Index, the monthly unique audience of VKontakte in December 2015 amounted to 46.9 million people. During the day, the social network was visited by 22.1 million people. The number of OK.RU unique users was 31.7 million, while for Facebook this figure was 22.4 million.

7.4 million VKontakte users are students, 7.2 million are managers, 11.7 million are specialists, 2.6 million are housewives.

The wealth level of the user audience is not uniform. So, 2.5 million people are enough only for food, 19.1 million - enough for food and clothing, 22.5 million can afford expensive things, and 0.41 million people live in full prosperity.

On average, VK users spend 17% of their day on social networks, while OK.RU users spend 9.6%. 5.4% go to YouTube, 3.8% to Mail.ru.

47% of the time spent on web browsing is devoted to visiting friends' profiles and news feed. 18% for other sections, 12% for photography, 8% for posts and communities.

In December 2015, 32.8 million Android users and 12.3 million iOS users visited VKontakte. The predominant age category for both iOS and Android is users aged 25 to 34 years.

Social networks in Russia, winter 2015-2016 Figures, trends, forecasts

We present the data of a regular study of the active audience of social networks in Russia, winter 2015-2016.

The study presents data on the audience, age, gender and regional distribution of the authors of social networks in Russia. The study includes data on the most popular authors and groups for each social network.

The main focus of the study is focused on the active (writing) audience, since we study social networks as a means of public communication and their influence on the formation of public opinion.

The main data are presented below, the presentation of the full version of the study "Social networks in Russia, winter 2015-2016", including the Top 20 authors and groups in social networks, is available here.

Social media activity

One of the key indicators of the “vital activity” of a social network is the number of “speaking” users who openly express their position in public messages on social media. In December 2015, there were about 37 million human, they generated 588 million messages per month. Active authors creating public content make social networks an actual indicator of public sentiment, making it possible to capture “live” social problems at the very beginning of the formation of significant trends.

By the number of "writing" Russian authors, VKontakte is in the lead - 18.8 million unique authors. The next in second place is Instagram - incredible growth rates, in December this network recorded 10.6 million authors, almost 5 times more than in the spring of 2015. Third place - Twitter - the number of active authors here continues to decline, in December it was recorded a little more 1 million people

As for the number of posts posted on social networks every day, there is no such dramatic change. In the first place, as before, Vkontakte, in the second - Twitter, then - Instagram and Facebook.

* Odnoklassniki - data for the Top 100,000 groups

Twitter traditionally leads in terms of engagement, although the average number of posts dropped slightly in winter - there are an average of 90 posts per month per active author on this network. The second place - LiveJournal - on average, 49 messages per author, the third - Facebook - 39 messages per author. VKontakte and Odnoklassniki are very close in this indicator - 15 and 14 messages per author, respectively.

Social media audience

According to TNS, the monthly audience of most social networks has declined slightly, but there are also sources showing growth. So, the VKontakte audience stopped at 46.6 million person, second place - Odnoklassniki ( 31.5 million Human). Facebook audience in December 2015 was 21.7 million people, close further is located My World - 16.6 million people and LiveJournal, with an audience 15.2 million people Instagram audience by December 2015 increased by 2 million and amounted to 12.3 million people Twitter audience remained practically unchanged and equal to 7.7 million people

Statistics for Russia for each social network

Monthly audience - 46.6 million people, 40% of whom - 18,8 million - showed public activity.

As for the age structure of VKontakte authors, one can note an increase in the number of authors 25-34 years old, their share was 32.1%, the share of authors aged 18-24 years is slightly higher - 32.3%, authors under 18 years old - 24%, over 35 years, only 11.6% of active authors.

The geographical distribution of VKontakte authors is smoothly redistributed towards a more uniform regional penetration - St. 31,7% , on the second - Moscow with 23% of the registered population, further Murmansk and Kaliningrad regions and Sevastopol - 19.4%, 19.3% and 18.8% activity of the population, respectively.

Instagram monthly audience in November 2015 was 12.3 million people, and the number of active authors is 10.7 million Human.

Instagram remains the most feminine of all social networks in Russia; in the winter of 2015-16, 77.1% of active authors are women.

The penetration rate on Instagram has practically not changed - the Leningrad Region is still in the lead - 38% population, Moscow - 22,3% population and the Sakhalin region - 17,2%.

In the age structure of Facebook, categories from 25 to 34 years old and 35-44 years old are still in the lead - their share was 35.3% and 32.6%, respectively. 6.1% of authors are under 24 years of age, and authors over 44 for a total of 26.1%.

It should be noted that Facebook remains a unique social network in the Russian Federation both in terms of the age structure of authors - more than 65% of whom are between the ages of 25-44, and in terms of public content - it is a network primarily focused on business contacts and business.

The gender distribution of the Russian-speaking part of Facebook continues to shift towards the weaker sex ( 58 % of authors).

The geographical cut shows stability - most regions have retained their positions: Moscow - 6.4% of the population, Altai - 3.75%, Yaroslavl Region - 3.2%.

Data on Odnoklassniki are presented by Russian authors in the Top-100,000 groups.

Classmates, as before, remain primarily a platform for interpersonal communication. The monthly audience of the network is 31.5 million people, while public activity in groups is demonstrated by only 1.1 million authors.

In Odnoklassniki, as before, the main share of active authors is in the 24-34 age group - 26.6%. Almost equal shares are for groups 35-44 and 55 and older - 20.7% and 20.9%, respectively. Only 15.8% of active authors are under 24 years old.

In November 2015, Twitter audience was 7.7 million people, and the number of active authors is 1 million people.

The share of men among authors on Twitter continues to grow, in December 2015 the share is already 51.6%. A year ago, in December 2014, there were 45.6% of men on Twitter, and in the spring of 2015 it was already 50.6%.

In terms of Twitter penetration, the leadership remained with St. Petersburg -2.1%. Almost the same penetration was recorded in Moscow - 2% of the population. The third line was occupied by the Novosibirsk Region, with a penetration rate of 1%.

The monthly audience of the network decreased by 10 million people and amounted to 16.6 million, and the number of active authors is 830 thousand people.

The gender structure of My World has practically not changed, 41,8 % of men and 58,2 % of women.

LiveJournal remains a platform for those who like to “read, not talk”: from 15 million people monthly audience, they are active only 111 thousand authors.

The age structure of LJ is stable, the largest share of authors falls on the groups of 18-24 years old - 37.2% and 25-34 years old - 35.8%.

Comparison of socio-demographic characteristics of the authors

Over the past six months, social media has matured, the share of authors under 18 has declined, authors 18-24 and 25-24 years old prevail in LiveJournal and VKontakte, and authors 25-34 and 35-44 years old prevail in other networks.

For Twitter and Instagram, there is no age data for active contributors.

Trends and forecasts

  1. There is a significant increase in the activity of the Russian segment Instagram... Moreover, the majority of Instagram authors are active users of other social networks - the share of cross-posting from Instagram to other social networks exceeds 50% of messages.
  2. The growth of the Russian part continues Facebook... Moreover, this growth is observed primarily in the field of business contacts and business. Facebook's share in the analysis of business topics often accounts for more than 30% of the total volume of social media data on a topic.
  3. Active growth continues sites with reviews- both by the number of new reviews and by attendance.
  4. The Russian part is slowly losing activity Twitter. At the same time, the activity of spambots on Twitter also decreases, but nevertheless it still accounts for more than 30% of the flow.

Basic research terms:

Message - any open (public) post - in status, on the wall, in groups, comments, etc. Messages in personal correspondence or in the “only for friends” mode are not counted.

Audience - the number of people who have visited the site at least 1 time per month.

It is foolish to argue today about the popularity of VK. Every day we hear from friends the phrases "And he gave me a like", "Throw a song", and so on. Familiar words?

Every day someone writes messages, comments, watches videos. And you cannot count such people, both in the Russian Federation and in the CIS. But sometimes the question arises - how many people are registered in this Internet resource? How high will the indicators appear before us? Fortunately, ignorance will not be a problem in our path. Let's figure it out.

How to find out how many people are registered in VKontakte?

First, let's look at the statistics:

  • The social network is used by at least 85,000,000 Russians.
  • About 25,000,000 residents of Ukraine.
  • 72,000,000 visitors - men
  • 63,000,000 women.
  • More than 80,134,521 visitors visit the site every day.
  • At least 59% of them are over twenty-five years old.

Calculating by country, we get 1,000,000. Estimates by gender say 135 million. Such a result may seem small, however, many registrants simply do not indicate their gender. Also, a lot of people have made it impossible for search engines to find their accounts, which leads to an incredible amount. However, you can still say with confidence that there are from 200 to 350 million, or even more, in VK.

How many people are registered on Vkontakte? Second way.

We are looking for the official directory of Vkontakte users. The service is available at vk.com/catalog.php. There is data that can answer our question. There you will see counters ranging from 1 to hundreds of thousands or more. The link at the end of the list will help you find the information you need. See screenshot:

Next, several more items will open, each time you open them you have to do the same. In the final section, the last registered "account" will be visible. Its serial number will show how many fans there are to use the creation of Pavel Durov.

At the time of this writing, 422,771,474 "users" were registered on Vkontakte. But this version of the calculation is also not ideal - there are many "fake", deleted and forgotten pages, which does not guarantee the correctness of the calculations one hundred percent.

Great values, isn't it? And at first, only the creator himself was among the participants. Then his classmates joined, and away we go. The project has gradually increased in size and grown to its current scale. Now, the network has no less than two hundred million real users, and in its entire history more than four hundred million accounts have been created.

Impressive, right? But it remains to be seen how the beloved "Contact" will increase or decrease in the future.
