Comparative tests of computers. Special testing

It goes without saying that any user would like to know how fast their computer system is. Checking the performance of a computer with Windows 10 or any other system on board can be performed using several methods using the built-in tools of the operating systems themselves or by installing additional software. Further, it is proposed to consider several basic options, after which the user himself will be able to choose exactly the method that meets his needs to the greatest extent. Naturally, not all third-party programs are equivalent to each other, but we will dwell on some of their capabilities separately.

What is a computer performance check for?

Let's start with what all this is for. Suppose a man came to a store to buy a laptop. There are so many different models on the window that the eyes run up, and they all look similar to each other.

What to choose from all this variety in the sense of getting a truly powerful device in terms of performance? In such a situation, you don't need to go far. For example, the performance of a computer with Windows 7 in the pre-installed form can be checked by using the standard system properties viewer through the PCM menu on the computer icon located on the desktop. The performance index will be indicated just above the lines indicating the type of processor and the amount of RAM. Immediately, notice that for the seventh and eighth versions, its value at the maximum can reach 7.9. But in Windows 10, checking the performance of a computer in this way is not provided (there is no index in the properties window). But this will be discussed separately a little later.

The simplest way to test performance

In theory, any user knows that you can monitor the performance of a computer system in real time in any Windows system on the tab of the same name in the "Task Manager", where general parameters are displayed.

In order to get as much information as possible, you must press the button to call the resource monitor. There will already be more information here, and you can track the load on each system component.

Also, a quick check of the computer's performance can be done by calling the system monitor toolkit (perfmon in the Run console). Along with the general parameters, here you can also open the resource monitor or use the performance tracker in the form of a special monitor, which, again, shows the changes in the form of a graph in real time. In general, the system monitor is more suitable for system specialists or overlockers, and for an ordinary user it may be of interest only in viewing the data of changes in performance at the current moment.

Using the command line

Now specifically about what can be applied to the tenth modification of Windows. Checking the performance of a computer in the simplest case can be carried out using the command line tool (cmd).

In the running console, enter the winsat formal-restart clean combination, after which the results will be displayed on the screen. The disadvantage of this method is that such information on performance will not tell an ordinary user absolutely nothing.

You can view a more or less understandable report by opening the Formal.Assessment (Recent) .WinSAT.xml file. You can find it if you go to the Performance folder in the Windows directory, then open the WinSAT subdirectory, and use the DataStore section in it. The file itself is usually opened through the default web browser. If for some reason it did not work to open it, you can use the standard "Notepad".

PowerShell Toolkit

The PowerShell toolkit looks no less interesting and powerful, which many users clearly dislike due to the complexity of use (and some do not know about it at all).

However, invoke the console with powershell from the Run menu, type Get-CimInstance Win32_WinSAT, and press Enter. The screen will display indices for all areas of performance evaluation. The WinSPRLevel line will indicate the overall average score formed on the basis of the lowest performance value (in systems of versions below the tenth, this is exactly the indicator that is displayed in the computer properties).

Performance Index for Games

Of course, checking the performance of a computer in games (if optimization is still required) can (and should) be done using specialized utilities. But what if they are not at hand at the moment?

Without obtaining detailed information, in order to find out exclusively the index itself, you should use the "Run" console and enter the combination shell: games in it, after which the overall score will be displayed on the right side of the window that appears.

But for testing and optimizing video cards, narrowly targeted utilities are best suited, specially designed for this (for other devices, as a rule, additional tests are not provided in them).

The best programs to check computer performance

But all of the above referred exclusively to the built-in tools of the Windows systems themselves. As you can already see, you will not get very detailed information when using them. To view detailed characteristics for all devices, it is better to turn to specialized programs, among which the following can be highlighted:

  • Winaero WEI Tool;
  • AIDA64;
  • SiSoftware Sandra Lite;
  • 3DMark;
  • PCMark 10;
  • CINEBENCH;
  • ExperienceIndexOK;
  • CrystalDiskMark;
  • PC Benchmark;
  • Metro Experience Index;
  • PassMark PerformanceTest and others.

Let's take a look at some of them.

Winaero WEI Tool

This application is a popular program for testing the performance of a Windows computer on board. The main advantage of this utility is that it is presented in a portable form (does not require installation on a computer or laptop).

True, all the information and interface are completely English, however, even with knowledge of the language at the level of the school curriculum, it is not so difficult to understand what is at stake. Again, the general index will be presented on the right. By the way, notice right away that both the system tools and additional applications calculate scores based on the lowest scores, which can immediately determine which component of the system has the minimum performance.

AIDA64

Before us is another program for testing the performance of a computer with Windows 10 or any other version of the system. In fact, it is the former Everest application.

Here in the Benchmark section you can find the most detailed information on any component installed in a computer system. True, an ordinary user is unlikely to need such information, but for any system analyst there is a wide field of activity here. The only drawback of the application is that you can use it for free only for thirty days.

3D Mark

Finally, one more program for checking the performance of a computer with the 10th version of the system on board.

Its main purpose is to test the graphics parameters of computer systems (CPU performance, video card speed, use of the currently installed version of the DirectX platform, etc.). For the most modern high-performance configurations, this application can even run tests using 4k screen resolutions. The program itself, in a sense, resembles a game, and in the process of conducting tests, a huge number of all kinds of graphic effects are used. Minus - the price is about $ 30.

PC Benchmark

This utility is worth a special mention. Despite the fact that the application comes in the same portable version, it has a lot of interesting features.

Its use is reduced to launching the application and activating the test, which will be performed in the background. After that, the fun begins. The fact is that the program immediately prompts the user to optimize the system, and after its execution, a special report opens in the browser with comparative indicators before and after optimization.

Instead of a total

It is up to the user to decide which method of conducting a quick check to choose. You can use Windows tools to get the minimum information, but to get more information, it's still better to use third-party utilities, in which the toolkit is much broader.

Optimizers were not considered here (in some cases, they can also produce such tests). For example, Advanced SystemCare Pro has a built-in module, and in regular versions of the application, you can simply turn on a system scan for problems with a deactivated auto repair point. Of course, you won't get the index, but you can immediately identify problems at the program level. However, you can also use the hardware optimization module, which improves performance by improving the management of device drivers installed on the computer. You can also find tools to optimize RAM or work

Hello dear readers! Ekaterina Kalmykova with you. For people far from the complex computer world, the issue of computer performance is in last place in terms of relevance. Those who use a computer to read news, communicate on social networks and to watch funny videos on YouTube do not understand why, for what and, most importantly, how to check the performance of a computer.

If the computer suddenly starts to slow down, hang it immediately for repair, pay money for allegedly serious breakdowns, and do not think about the reasons for this behavior of their "friend".

How to check the performance of a windows computer and why should it be done? Let's figure it out together.

To begin with, everyone can check the performance of a computer. Yes, everyone. Regardless of their level of ownership. This does not require special skills or knowledge.

Another thing is, what is it for? The performance of a computer is responsible for its speed. Have you noticed that your computer starts to slow down slightly? Does it take longer to turn on, take longer to download files? This behavior is typical for PCs and laptops of all ages. If something like this happened with an old, long-used technique, then you need to think about changing it. But when an almost new, literally recently brought from the store, the computer starts to get out of hand like that, then here it is already necessary to figure out what the matter is.

If a computer or laptop begins to slow down mercilessly, the first thing to do is to check for performance. This can be done both online and directly at the howling workplace. This check will determine the reason for your email friend's behavior. In addition, such testing can be done in a store before buying, and on several devices, in order to choose the best one as a result.

What will the check give?

  • first of all, it will reveal the potential of the apparatus, the time it spends on completing tasks;
  • you can identify the most difficult tasks for a computer;
  • performing a test on several gadgets will determine the most powerful one;
  • will help to find the weakest components in the computer that can be changed;
  • detects errors in the operating system;
  • will select the components to be compatible;
  • will find poorly functioning elements.

As you can see, the performance of a computer needs to be checked on any, even a new device. Moreover, if you use a PC, for example, to read online books, you must also exercise control. You can conduct it yourself, why feed the technical support centers without an obvious need, isn't it?

Please note that very old models of computers and laptops (over 7 years old) often slow down purely because of their age. If you have a representative of the older generation and "pleases" you by freezing more than once every 4 months, this is a reason to take a closer look at newer models. Performance check in this case will be able to show the weaknesses and strengths of the computer, but it is worth understanding that these indicators will be significantly lower in comparison with newer models.

The easiest ways to check your computer's performance

What can you use to check the performance of your computer? Let me present to your attention several ways to do this:

  • performance index;
  • Windows PowerShell
  • the combination of keys Alt, Ctrl, Delete.

Let's analyze each of the methods separately.

Performance index

This is a special program for a computer in Windows that can calculate performance indicators for your computer, moreover, it measures various indicators of your PC and assigns a score to each of them, and displays an overall score for the overall system performance.

Please note that it is available for versions of Windows 7, 8, Vista. This test method is not available for Windows XP.

For Windows 7

To get started with the performance index, you need to click on the "Start" button on your computer and select Control Panel. Next, click on "Check computer status".

In the left window, click on "View information about computer performance."

Ready! So we see the information we are looking for.

Having opened the first tab, you can find out detailed information on the very concept of the Windows performance index and about its assessment.

The second contains information that, if necessary, can help improve the performance of your computer.

For Windows 8

We also start by pressing the "Start" button and selecting "Control Panel". In the open window, select the inscription "Counters and productivity tools".

You will see a table of current computer performance indicators, the same screenshot as for Windows 7.

The value of indicators

Now let me just say a few words about the values of the indicators. If you have Windows 7, anything above 3.5 is considered normal. More specifically, 3.5 to 5 are average rates, meaning that the computer is performing moderately well. There is no cause for concern, you can update a couple of components. Scores from 5 to 7.9 are considered excellent for this version. If you see such data at home, you can rejoice - everything is fine with your computer.

The maximum value of the performance index, depending on the version of the operating system, is as follows:

  • Windows Vista - 5.9;
  • Windows 7 - 7.9;
  • Windows 8 and higher - 9.9.

Windows PowerShell program

There are no built-in applications and programs for testing PC power since Windows 8.1. Therefore, testing can be done using PowerShell.

You can use Windows PowerShell to check the performance score of your computer on Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. This built-in utility helps you determine the performance of your PC or laptop.

Warning: a common mistake! If you are the owner of a laptop, make sure that it is connected to power before checking, otherwise the gadget will give an error when trying to check.

We go to the "Start" menu. In the search line, enter the name "PowerShell" (1). Next, move the mouse cursor over the icon of the desired program (2) and press the right mouse button. You will see the inscription "Run as administrator" (3), which you need to select.

That's all - the program is open.

In the blank window that you have opened after the cursor, type the following: winsat formal and then press the Enter key.

The whole process will take you no more than 3 minutes. And you will see the result.

If you do not have administrator rights, the test will fail. But you can see the performance estimate made the last time. To do this, in the same window, type: Get-CimInstance Win32_WinSAT and press Enter.

This is how you can easily check the performance of your Windows 8.1, Windows 10 computer.

If you want to visually see how this is done, then watch the video.

For Windows 8.1

For Windows 10

The shortcut keys Alt - Ctrl - Delete

Another way to check if the processor is working on a computer - Alt - Ctrl - Delete keys. This check will help give the clearest picture of your computer. It is suitable for any system, quickly and conveniently diagnoses the device.

You will need to do three things:

  1. press the Alt - Ctrl - Delete buttons at the same time;
  2. then to the "Task Manager";
  3. in the window that opens, click on the "Performance" button.

You will get a graph that looks like this on Windows 7:

The main advantage of this method of verification is the provision of visual information on all components of the PC, and not just itself.

You may also see the following window with indicators:

This graph shows what works well and where there are problems.

Pay attention to the color of the lines in the resulting graph.

  • green - everything is fine with the computer;
  • yellow - your computer is in moderately good condition;
  • red - the computer screams for help or replacement.

Useful applications to check computer performance

There are a number of useful applications that can help you test your PC's performance. I'll tell you about some of them.

You can check the performance of the computer assembly using the program AIDA64... This is a very useful professional-level program that will help determine the condition of the computer, all of its constituent parts. It checks the status of the monitor, processor, video card, motherboard, the status of drivers, OS, installed programs, etc. The program is available in Russian.

What other program can check the performance of a computer?

Everest Home Edition will check the performance of your computer for free. The program has the same qualities as AIDA32, but besides that, it also checks the memory reading speed. Convenient and free utility.

3D Mark can check the performance of the computer "in games". It creates "extreme conditions" for the computer to test its performance. He mainly specializes in checking the video card, so if the video card worries you the most, feel free to contact 3D Mark.

Performance test allows you to evaluate the power of your computer and test all of its hardware parts (processor, memory, graphics, etc.).

All of these programs can be independently found on their official websites and, if desired, downloaded online.

Friends, now you know how to check the performance of your computer and agree that there is nothing difficult and scary in this. It is recommended to do it every time a freeze or braking occurs.

But checking the performance of your computer is one of the few processes you want to master. And if you want to learn the intricacies of working at a computer using a simple and understandable language, then I recommend you a productive course that will make you a real computer pro.

In addition, the course will help you save money on repairing an existing or buying a new computer, as it will teach you many secrets of using it. You will find out all the secret possibilities of your electronic "friend", which you did not even know about.

Dear readers, do not forget to share the article on social networks, because your friends may also want to know how to check the performance of your computer.

The need to test a computer processor appears in the case of an overclocking procedure or comparison of characteristics with other models. The built-in tools of the operating system do not allow this, therefore, it is necessary to use third-party software. Popular representatives of such software offer a choice of several analysis options, which will be discussed below.

I would like to clarify that regardless of the type of analysis and the software used, during this procedure, loads of different levels are applied to the CPU, and this affects its heating. Therefore, first we advise you to measure the temperatures in the idle state, and only then proceed to the implementation of the main task.

The temperature above forty degrees during idle time is considered high, which is why this indicator during the analysis under heavy loads can increase to a critical value. In the articles on the links below, you will learn about the possible causes of overheating and find solutions to them.

We now turn to two options for analyzing the CPU. As mentioned above, the CPU temperature rises during this procedure, so after the first test, we advise you to wait at least an hour before starting the second. It is best to measure the degrees before each analysis to make sure that there is no possible overheating situation.

Method 1: AIDA64

AIDA64 is one of the most popular and powerful system resource monitoring programs. Its toolkit includes many useful features that will be useful to both experienced users and beginners. Among this list, there are two modes for testing components. Let's start with the first one:

Let's touch on the most important issue - the meaning of all the indicators obtained. Firstly, AIDA64 itself does not notify you about how efficient the tested component is, so everything is learned in comparing your model with another, more top-end one. In the screenshot below, you will see the results of such a scan for the i7 8700k. This model is one of the most powerful of the previous generation. Therefore, it is enough to simply pay attention to each parameter in order to understand how the used model is close to the reference one.

Secondly, this analysis will be most useful before and after overclocking to compare the overall performance picture. We want to pay special attention to the values "FLOPS", "Memory Read", "Memory Write" and "Memory Copy"... FLOPS measures an overall performance indicator, and read, write and copy speed will determine the speed of a component.

The second mode is stability analysis, which is almost never done just like that. It will be effective during overclocking. Before starting this procedure, a stability test is carried out, and also after to ensure the normal functioning of the component. The task itself is performed as follows:

  1. Open the tab "Service" and go to the menu "System stability test".
  2. At the top, check the box that you need to check. In this case it is "CPU"... Followed by FPU which is responsible for calculating floating point values. Uncheck this box if you do not want to get even more, almost maximum load on the central processor.
  3. Next open a window "Preferences" by clicking on the corresponding button.
  4. In the window that appears, you can customize the color palette of the chart, the rate of update of indicators and other auxiliary parameters.
  5. Return to the test menu. Above the first chart, tick the boxes that you want to receive information about, and then click on the button "Start".
  6. On the first graph you see the current temperature, on the second - the load level.
  7. The testing should be completed in 20-30 minutes or when critical temperatures (80-100 degrees) are reached.
  8. Go to section "Statistics", where all information about the processor will appear - its average, minimum and maximum values of temperature, fan speed, voltage and frequency.

Based on the numbers obtained, decide whether it is worth further overclocking the component or it has reached the limit of its power. You will find detailed instructions and recommendations for overclocking in our other materials using the links below.

In order to measure the performance of a computer using tests, it is not necessary to download any third-party applications and utilities.

It is enough to use the resources already built into the operating system.

Although, for more detailed information, the user will have to find a suitable program.

Based on the test results, it is possible to draw conclusions which of the parts of a PC or laptop needs to be replaced before the rest - and sometimes just understand about the need to buy a new computer.

The need to check

Testing the speed of the computer is available to any user. Verification does not require any specialized knowledge or experience with certain versions of Windows. And the process itself is unlikely to take more than an hour.

Reasons to use the built-in utility or third-party application include:

  • unreasonable slowdown of the computer. Moreover, not necessarily the old one - a check is needed to identify problems with new PCs. So, for example, the minimum results and indicators of a good video card indicate incorrectly installed drivers;
  • checking the device when choosing several similar configurations in a computer store. This is usually done before buying laptops - running a test on 2-3 devices that are practically the same in terms of parameters helps to find out which one suits the buyer better;
  • the need to compare the capabilities of various components of a gradually upgraded computer. So, if the HDD has the least performance value, then it should be replaced first (for example, with an SSD).

According to the test results, which revealed the speed at which the computer performs various tasks, you can find driver problems and incompatibility of installed devices. And sometimes even poorly functioning and broken parts - for this, however, you will need more functional utilities than those that are built into Windows by default. Standard tests show a minimum of information.

Checking by means of the system

You can check the performance of individual components of your computer using the built-in capabilities of the Windows operating system. The principle of operation and information content are approximately the same for all versions of the platform from Microsoft. And the differences are only in the way of starting and reading information.

Windows Vista, 7 and 8

For the 7th and 8th versions of the platform, as well as Windows Vista, the performance counter of computer elements can be found in the list of basic information about the operating system. To display them on the screen, just right-click on the "My Computer" icon and select properties.

If testing has already been carried out, information on its results will be available immediately. If this is the first time the test is being performed, you will have to run it by going to the performance check menu.

The maximum score that Windows 7 and 8 can get is 7.9. It is worth thinking about the need to replace parts if at least one of the indicators is below 4. The gamer is more suitable for values above 6. Windows Vista has the best indicator of 5.9, and the "critical" indicator is about 3.

Important: To speed up performance calculations, almost all programs should be turned off during the test. When testing a laptop, it is advisable to plug it in - the process consumes battery power noticeably.

Windows 8.1 and 10

For more modern operating systems, it is no longer so easy to find information about computer performance and start calculating it. To run the utility that estimates system parameters, you should follow these steps:

1Go to the operating system command prompt(cmd via menu "Run" rollover Win + R);

2Include an assessment process by leading the team winsat formal –restart clean;

3Wait for work to finish;

4 Go to folder Performance \ WinSAT \ DataStore located in the Windows system directory on the computer's system drive;

5 Find and open a file in a text editor "Formal.Assessment (Recent) .WinSAT.xml".

Among the set of text, the user must find the WinSPR block, where approximately the same data is located that are displayed on the screen and systems Windows 7 and 8 - only in a different form.

So, under the title SystemScore hides the general index calculated by the minimum value, and MemoryScore, CpuScore and GraphicsScore denote the metrics for memory, processor, and graphics card, respectively. GamingScore and DiskScore- performance for the game and for reading / writing the hard disk.

The maximum value of the indicator for Windows 10 and version 8.1 is 9.9. This means that the owner of an office computer can still afford to have a system with numbers less than 6, but for a full-fledged PC and laptop, it must reach at least 7. And for a gaming device - at least 8.

Universal way

There is a method that is the same for any operating system. It consists in launching the Task Manager after pressing the Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys. A similar effect can be achieved by right-clicking on the taskbar - there you can find an item that launches the same utility.

You can see several graphs on the screen - for the processor (for each thread separately) and RAM. For more details, go to the Resource Monitor menu.

From this information, you can determine how heavily loaded the individual components of the PC. First of all, this can be done by the percentage of loading, secondly - by the color of the line ( green means the component is working normally, yellow- moderate, Red- the need to replace a component).

Third Party Programs

It's even easier to check your computer's performance with third-party apps.

Some of them are paid or shareware (that is, requiring payment after the trial period or to improve functionality).

However, testing of these applications is carried out in more detail - and quite often they also give out many other useful information for the user.

1. AIDA64

AIDA64 contains benchmarks for memory, cache, HDDs, SSDs and flash drives. And when testing a processor, 32 threads can be checked at once. Among all these advantages, there is also a small drawback - you can use the program for free only for a "trial period" of 30 days. And then you have to either switch to another application, or pay 2265 rubles. for a license.

2. SiSoftware Sandra Lite

3. 3DMark

4. PCMark 10

The application allows not only to test the operation of computer elements, but also to save the test results for future use. The app's only drawback is its relatively high cost. You will have to pay $ 30 for it.

5. CINEBENCH

Test images consist of 300 thousand polygonal images, which are combined into more than 2000 objects. And the results are displayed in the form PTS indicator - the larger it is, the more powerful the computer... The program is distributed free of charge, which makes it easy to find and download it on the net.

6. ExperienceIndexOK

Information is displayed on the screen in points. The maximum number is 9.9, as for the latest versions of Windows. It is for them that ExperienceIndexOK is designed to work. It is much easier to use such a program than to enter commands and search the system directory for files with results.

7. CrystalDiskMark

To test the disk, select the disk and set the test parameters. That is, the number of runs and the size of the file that will be used for diagnostics. After a few minutes, the screen will display information about the average read and write speed for the HDD.

8. PC Benchmark

After receiving the test results, the program offers to optimize the system. And after improving the work in the browser, a page opens where you can compare the performance indicators of your PC with other systems. On the same page, you can check if the computer can run some modern games.

9. Metro Experience Index

10. PassMark PerformanceTest

conclusions

Using various methods to check the performance of your computer allows you to check how your system is performing. And, if necessary, compare the speed of individual elements with those of other models. For a preliminary assessment, such a test can also be carried out using the built-in utilities. Although it is much more convenient to download special applications for this, especially since among them you can find several quite functional and free ones.

Instructions

If you need to know exactly your system, then this method is very convenient and suitable for more experienced users, since it is not only high-speed performance, but also individual parts. In order to determine the level of work for this method, you must press the Alt + Ctrl + Delete key combination;

Select Task Manager;

Select the "Performance" tab;

And on this tab you can see if your computer is in full-fledged mode, or if you should upgrade it.
This method can also be used by right-clicking on the command line. Then, in the context menu that appears, select the Task Manager, which will appear already with the tab we need open.

Windows is equipped with a useful utility called the Performance Index. This product measures the performance of your computer based on five key points, and shows the assessment of each of them, and, of course, the overall one. Moreover, the overall score cannot be higher than the minimum indicator among the components. At the moment, the performance score is calculated in values from 1 to 5.9. And such estimates as 6.0 and higher were left by Microsoft for later, that is, for more powerful computers.

In order to use this application, you need:
Log in to the control panel;

Launch the Performance Index application;

Click on the "Check" button;
Thus, if your Windows Performance Index scores below 3, you should consider upgrading or replacing your machine with a new one. If you showed above 3, then you have nothing to worry about.

Choosing a Performance Test Method computer depends on the specific task and direction of the user's activity. The check is performed internally by the operating system or by external programs.

You will need

  • What you need to check: the computer itself and a stably working Internet, preferably unlimited at a speed of 256 KV / s (the higher the better). The Internet is needed to download external verification programs.

Instructions

In order to determine the "nominal", that is, set by the manufacturer of hardware and software, you can view the parameters of the computer using the following sequence of steps.
Right-click on the "My Computer" shortcut.

If the shortcut is not displayed on the desktop, go to the "Start" menu and right-click on the "Computer" or "My Computer" line - depending on the operating system, the inscription may look different.
From the menu that opens, select the "Properties" line.

After viewing the main parameters (in addition to information about and full name, the base computer, system type, amount of installed RAM and other information are also indicated here), you can click on the "Performance Index" button to view the performance of individual system components.
You can see the degree of loading of the RAM and processor at a given moment using the task manager - to start it, you need to press the Ctrl + Alt + Del key combination. If Windows 7 is installed on the computer, pressing the key combination brings up a menu, where, in addition to launching the task manager, it is suggested to restart, turn off the computer or send it to "sleep".

For a more detailed, "real" assessment of the performance of a computer, it is worth using external programs, for example, everest, 3D mark (for 3D graphics and games), pc mark, cpu mark and others. If you need to find out if the performance of your computer is suitable for a particular game, you can either install Fraps or check it on the benchmarks built into the game. You can indirectly evaluate the performance of your computer according to the "enough - not enough" principle to solve a specific problem as follows - start disk defragmentation or archiving a large number of small files simultaneously with the selected task (game, computational or visualization program). If the main task is performed at an acceptable speed for the user, then the performance index is quite high.

  • how to determine the performance of a computer

The performance of your computer depends on many factors. Both the hardware used in the system and the software, as well as the level of computer workload. There are many methods and programs to test performance. The article discusses the simplest of them.

Instructions

In the window that appears, select the "Rate your computer" function. Wait for the verification operation to complete. It is not recommended to use the computer at this time, since during the testing process it works at its maximum capabilities, and the additional load on the system can lead to the failure of this process. Upon its completion, the overall assessment of the PC and the assessment of each component separately (processor, video card) are displayed. If you entered this section, and there is already a performance assessment, then the system has performed testing automatically.

If your base score is less than 3.5, then this means that the computer is rather weak, and is only suitable for solving office tasks. A score from 3.5 to 5 indicates average PC performance. You will be able to use most of the software, play games at the lowest graphics settings. A score from 5 to 7 (on some versions of Vista a score of 6) indicates a fairly high potential of the PC. Almost all programs are available to you, you can play most of the new games at high graphics settings. A score from 7 to 7.9 indicates that your computer is very powerful. With such an operating system performance index, you can install any program and play the most technologically advanced video games.

Helpful advice

The base score is determined by the weakest component. If you, for example, have a score of 6.0 for all parameters, and 3.0 for 3D (video card), then to increase the overall performance, you just need to replace the video card.

When buying a mobile computer that was previously in use, it is necessary to correctly calculate its cost. To do this, you need to pay attention to a number of parameters.

Instructions

First, evaluate the appearance. If there are chips, scratches or even cracks on the case, then it is better to refuse to buy such a computer altogether. Most likely, it was treated with carelessness, which could lead to damage to certain devices.

Find out the "age" of the mobile computer. If the laptop has been used for more than two years, then its cost should not exceed half the original price. It is advisable to first find out how much this mobile computer cost at the time of purchase. This will help you more accurately estimate its true value.

Look at the specifications of your computer. Pay particular attention to the used RAM cards, video adapter and central processor. It is best to compare them with existing counterparts. If an integrated video card is installed, then its cost is significantly reduced. These video adapters are not designed to work with powerful graphics editors and relatively new games.

Check the battery condition of this mobile computer. If it has been actively used for two to three years, then it will have to be replaced. Naturally, this fact should be reflected in the cost of the laptop. In this case, it is necessary to clarify the possibility of replacing the battery. Find out if you can get a new battery. This model may have been discontinued long ago.

Calculate the approximate total cost of the selected mobile computer. Please note that mobile computers have a shorter lifespan than stationary computers. The real life of such devices is 3-4 years. It is better to check the functionality of the device initially. To do this, carry out a test of the necessary components so as not to purchase a damaged product.

When buying a computer, you could be familiarized with the performance of a PC in general terms: provide information about the number of cores and frequency of the processor, give information about the video card or memory. But you can find out the overall performance of a PC only after special tests that provide comprehensive information about the computer.

You will need

  • - Computer with Windows OS;
  • - AIDA64 Extreme Edition program.

Instructions

The Windows 7 operating system has a good built-in tool for testing overall PC performance. If you have this operating system, then you do not need to download other programs for testing. Follow the steps below to test the performance of your PC. Right-click on the "My Computer" icon and select "Properties" from the context menu. Next, find the "System" section. In it, select "Rate Computer".

The PC component testing procedure will begin. During testing of the video card, the screen may go blank for a few seconds. Since all the resources of the computer will be used during the testing operation, it is better not to start other programs during this time.

After completing testing, you will receive an overall result and a result for all major components. The processor, hard drive, RAM and video card are evaluated. The base figure equals the weakest PC component. For example, if all components are rated 6 and memory speed is 4.5, then overall PC performance is lagging behind due to slow RAM. The maximum performance index is 7.9. After testing, you will know the performance of each PC component.

If you have a different operating system installed, you can use special programs. Download the AIDA64 Extreme Edition application from the Internet. Install it on your computer. Run the program and wait for the download of your system information to complete.

In the left part of the program window there is a line "Test". Click on the arrow next to this line. A list of components that you can test will appear. For a general test, select the CPU Qween option. After that, right-click on any area on the right side of the window. Select "Refresh" from the context menu. Now wait for the testing operation to complete. Its results will be highlighted in yellow. The higher this figure is to the maximum possible (written at the top), the higher the performance of the computer.

An integral part of any computer is the central processing unit. The evolution of electronics has led to the fact that modern processors are extremely complex devices. However, each of them contains parts that carry a similar functional purpose.

The core component of any processor is the core. It contains all the functions of executing commands and processing data received from RAM. The processor core is the most complex component, but its structure can be divided into several independent units, such as sampling and storage devices, branch prediction, decoding and instruction execution units.

The components of the processor core, which are responsible for the full cycle of fetching and executing instructions, are combined into pipelines to improve overall performance. Modern processors usually have multiple pipelines.

Most of the operations with data in a processor are performed on an arithmetic logic unit. The data itself (both initial and final) is stored in the register block. There are general-purpose registers intended mainly for arithmetic operations, segment registers involved in addressing, as well as special registers that affect the operation of the processor.

A mathematical coprocessor can be singled out as a separate part of the computational core of the processor. This is a component specially designed to speed up the processing of real numbers. The coprocessor originally existed as a separate module, but today it is ubiquitously integrated into the kernel.

An important component of modern processors is the branch prediction unit. It allows you to start decoding a sequence of commands on one of the pipelines even before the jump command is executed on the other. The introduction of this technology has made it possible to significantly increase the performance.

Almost all modern processors contain some amount of cache memory. The cache serves to minimize the number of calls to RAM, which are extremely slow compared to the processing speed inside the processor. Usually the cache is divided into several levels. The first level cache is the fastest, but also the smallest in terms of volume. It is located on the same crystal as the core. Higher tier caches hold more data, but are slower.

Preparation

Create the ideal software environment for testing. Only by ensuring the minimum system load, you will be able to get the most accurate picture of the equipment operation.

Turn off all programs and unnecessary processes that are currently running. Close applications running in the background. For example, turn off the torrent client, file downloaders, turn off antivirus protection, close your browser. Turn off the rest of the software currently running on the system.

Testing programs

Testing the performance of the entire computer can be done using the PCMark program, which is available on the official website of the developer Future Mark. Install the application and run it on your computer. The application has several tests that can test the ability of your computer and installed processor, RAM and video card to handle both video playback and to determine the processing speed of complex graphics and rendering.

To carry out the required test, select the appropriate option in the window of the selected program.

After running one test, run it again, and if you can see an improvement in performance, repeat the procedure again. If your computer is having problems, this operation will help you more accurately identify the problem. If necessary, you can use additional applications.

A well-known test program is SiSoftware Sandra. This software package has a rich set of settings and can perform a complete system check or check some components separately. A feature of the application is the output of the collected data in the form of a visual diagram that allows you to demonstrate all the weaknesses and strengths of your system.

The stability of the computer can be determined using the AIDA64 program. The utility will allow you not only to check the performance, but also to determine the presence of malfunctions and overheating in the equipment.

If you do not want to resort to using a wide range of testing programs, but want to test, for example, only the processor, the HyperPi application will come to the rescue. It allows you to determine the computational power of the cores in the processor by calculating the number of Pi with an accuracy of a millionths of a sign. An alternative program is Prime 95, which will also show the processor core parameters.

Tip 12: By what characteristics to choose a processor you need to pay attention to many different indicators. The PC processor is one of the most important parts that has a direct impact on the speed of the device.

When choosing a central processor for a personal computer, the user should pay attention to the following parameters: manufacturer, type of connector (CPU platform), clock frequency, bit depth, number of cores.

There are two main processor manufacturers in total: AMD and Intel. Some users believe that Intel processors are superior to their competitors in everything, but such people are deeply mistaken. There is no big difference between manufacturers, since all processor models are manufactured at a high-tech level.

Connector type

The connector type is one of the most important parameters. In the event that you skip it or forget about it, then the purchased processor may not fit the motherboard, that is, the processor will not be installed in a special connector that is located on it. As a result, the socket number (its model) must exactly match the socket located on the computer motherboard. For example, among the most popular Intel companies are: LGA 2011, LGA 1155 (LGA 775 and LGA 1156 are practically not used anywhere today). AMD has connectors: AM3, Socket AM3 + and Socket FM1.

Clock frequency

The clock speed of a processor is perhaps one of the most well-known parameters when evaluating or choosing a processor. The number of operations that the processor can perform in a certain unit of time depends on it. As an example, we can cite a processor with a clock frequency of 3.4 GHz, that is, in a second it can process 3 billion, 400 million cycles.

It should be noted that clock speed is far from the only parameter that affects the performance of a PC. That is, if the clock frequency is high, and other components (for example, a video card, RAM, etc.) are not the most popular, then in the end the computer is unlikely to work very quickly. It must be remembered that the best way out of the situation is if all PC components work "in unison."

Bit depth

The bit size of the processor is also an important parameter. There are several stand out: 32-bit, 64 and 128-bit. The latter option is extremely rare, so it doesn't even make sense to consider it. For the average user, a 32-bit or 64-bit system is fine. When choosing, it is worth remembering that 32-bit systems support a maximum of 3.75 GB of RAM, and if there is more of it on a personal computer, then you need to buy a processor with a 64-bit system.

Number of Cores

The choice of a processor with a certain number of cores directly depends on the type of tasks that will be solved using a PC. For example, if the user will work exclusively with text editors or "light" multimedia applications, then 2 cores will be enough. Otherwise, you need to purchase a processor with a large number of cores.
