Comparison of cpu processors. How AMD differs from Intel

Now smartphones can process a lot of information if they want to. Their processor has enough power to solve absolutely any task. At the same time, modern chipsets consume a minimum amount of electricity, for which the improved technical process should be thanked. Our ranking of smartphones processors will tell you about the most powerful models. Devices based on them can be blamed for anything, but definitely not for lack of power!

Good to know!

Now on the market of mobile processors the following companies are the most famous:

  • Qualcomm- produces chipsets from the Snapdragon series;
  • Samsung- creates Exynos chips;
  • MediaTek- flagship processors are distributed under the Helio trademark;
  • Huawei- Chipsets under the HiSilicon sub-brand are mainly built into their own smartphones.

At the same time, it is impossible to say for sure which chips are more powerful and which ones are weaker. Of course, there are all kinds of tests and benchmarks. But their result can be called conditional, hypothetical. In practice, however, each processor operates in its own mode, rarely pushing clock speeds to maximum. Nevertheless, our rating can be considered correct - those who remained outside it mobile processors suffer from certain shortcomings, and the devices based on them cannot be called ideal.

Recently announced models may not be present in our top. We decided to tell only about those products, based on which smartphones are already on store shelves.

Samsung Exynos 8 Octa 8890

  • Year of issue: 2016
  • Technical process: 14 nm
  • Architecture: Samsung Exynos M1 + ARM Cortex-A53 (ARMv8-A)
  • Video accelerator: Mali-T880, 12 cores, 650 MHz

Geekbench score: 5940 points

If not the best processor for a smartphone, then at least one of those who deserve this title. It is not for nothing that all variations of the South Korean Galaxy S7 are equipped with it. Is it possible to blame this flagship for the lack of power? The chipset can handle 4K video at 60fps with ease. It consists of eight cores. Maximum frequency is 2290 MHz. But it is extremely rare to raise it to such a level, since even more low frequencies quite enough for most tasks.

Unfortunately, the processor also has certain problems. It just so happened that the South Korean chipsets are endowed with not the best video accelerator (GPU). Here, too, the Mali-T880, despite its 12 cores, performs strictly on the "good" rating, but nothing more. This is proved by the tests in GFXBench, where in terms of graphics Samsung Exynos 8 Octa 8890 outperforms some of the other chipsets reviewed today.

Dignity

  • Support for video in a resolution of 2160p at 60 frames / s;
  • Not very hot;

Qualcomm does not have its own manufacturing facilities. However, she has many patents at her disposal. And with them it is not difficult to develop a processor close to the ideal, after which it remains only to place an order for production from other companies. Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 pleases with both processing power and graphics processing capabilities. Many flagships that were born in 2016 were equipped with this chipset. And none of their customers complained about the graphics in mobile games!

The chip consists of only four cores. However, this did not prevent him from gaining record points in benchmarks - not least thanks to the graphics accelerator. Maximum frequency at this processor is 2150 MHz. At the hardware level, the chipset supports HDMI 2.0, USB 3.0, and Bluetooth 4.1. In a word, the processor could easily cope even with tasks assigned to a laptop! It also supports a camera with a resolution of up to 28 megapixels, which is why Sony made its choice in favor of this processor, in whose flagship smartphones there is just such a sensor.

  • Year of issue: 2016
  • Process technology: 16 nm
  • Architecture:
  • Video accelerator: Mali-T880, 4 cores

Geekbench score: 6,000 points

This chipset is made using a 16-nanometer process technology, which testifies to its decent energy efficiency. The maximum frequency here is increased to 2.5 GHz. The creators had to take such a step because of the Mali-T880 graphics accelerator, which does not cope with its task in the best way.

The Chinese chipset consists of eight cores, four of which can be called auxiliary. Paired with a GPU, it is capable of playing 4K video at 60 frames / s. But only reproduce - the processor is only capable of creating a video on its own in 1080p resolution. And this despite the fact that the chip even supports dual cameras, the total resolution of which is 42 megapixels. It is also capable of recognizing Bluetooth 4.2 and USB 3.0 modules.

Dignity

  • Support for many modern wireless technologies;
  • Nearly record clock speed;

In 2015-2016, this processor was used by many Huawei smartphones. The chipset consists of eight cores, the power of four of them can reach 2300 MHz. It would seem that the result is quite good. But not everything is so simple. Weakness the chip is in the graphics accelerator. In its capacity, the first version of the Mali-T880 is used here. It copes well with video decoding - in theory, you can even run 4K video at 60 frames / s. But in games, this GPU shows itself disgusting, especially by the standards of flagships.

However, you can't find fault with the processing power of this chipset, which is why it got into our top processors. The product supports Bluetooth 4.2 and USB 3.0 standards, although the Chinese giant did not really produce smartphones with such high-speed interfaces, preferring to save money. Also, in theory, the processor copes with the data stream from the dual camera, which has a total resolution of 42 megapixels.

Dignity

  • Supports USB 3.0 and Bluetooth 4.2;
  • High computing power;
  • Support for modern memory formats;
  • Not very expensive to manufacture;

Apple could even add 4K video at 60fps if it so desired!

As for the computing power, everything is in order with it, although the processor still does not gain record points in the benchmarks. It would seem that only two cores are used here. But for solving everyday tasks, this is quite enough. Not least because of the better optimized operating system.

Dignity

  • High power of two cores;
  • Excellent 12-core graphics accelerator;
  • Full support 4K video at 60 fps;
  • Support for many modern technologies;
  • Recognizes modern memory formats.

A processor with a rather complex structure. It consists of ten cores belonging to two varieties. The two cores are the most powerful - they belong to the Cortex-A72 type, and their clock frequency can reach 2500 MHz. The rest of the computing cores are of the Cortex-A53 type. Half of them are overclocked to 2000 MHz, while the rest are limited to 1550 MHz.

All this allows the processor to gain a lot of points in the benchmarks. And the result would have been even higher if not for the graphics accelerator. This element is seriously limited in its capabilities here. Yes, it supports full-fledged work 4K video, including creation, but only at 30fps. And in games, the GPU does its job even worse. As for the rest of the characteristics, support for 32-megapixel cameras and Bluetooth standard 4.1. The maximum display resolution of a smartphone with such a chipset can reach 2560 x 1600 pixels.

Dignity

  • Support for a camera with a resolution of 32 megapixels;

One of the most popular creations by Qualcomm. They are endowed with a huge number of smartphones from the mid-budget and even top segments... The manufacturer did not bother with the architecture, endowing the chipset with eight identical cores. The maximum clock frequency is 2000 MHz, of which ordinary user quite enough.

The graphics accelerator here is optimized for processing video content. In theory, a smartphone based on this processor is capable of playing and recording 4K video at 60 frames / s. But in games, some problems begin. Although their presence is surprising, because the GPU even has support for DirectX 12, which is activated on devices with Windows on board. The chipset also supports dual cameras, the total resolution of which does not exceed 24 megapixels. Only missing here USB support 3.0. However, the creators of smartphones do not like to embed such high-speed connectors into their creations.

Dignity

  • Dual camera supported;
  • Fast charging technology is great;
  • High power of all eight cores;
  • Full support for 4K video content at 60 frames / s;

  • Video accelerator: Adreno 510

Geekbench score: 4886 points

This chipset is also known as Snapdragon 652. It is one of latest processors which is still being manufactured in a 28nm process. The creators are not at all embarrassed by the relatively large size of the chip, since it is built mainly into tablets.

The processor consists of eight processing cores. The clock speed of four of them can reach 1800 MHz. This is enough for the tablet to solve the main tasks without any thoughtfulness. The chipset also includes the Adreno 510 graphics accelerator. There are no particular complaints about it, because no one will expect excellent graphics performance from a tablet. It should be noted that theoretically the chip supports video at 2160p resolution at 30 frames per second. It also boasts Bluetooth 4.1 support and Quick Charge 3.0 proprietary fast charging technology.

Dignity

  • Supports devices with higher screen resolutions;
  • Large computing power;

MediaTek MT6797M Helio X20

  • Year of issue: 2016
  • Process technology: 20 nm
  • Architecture: 2x ARM Cortex-A72 + 4x ARM Cortex-A53 + 4x ARM Cortex-A53
  • Video accelerator: Mali-T880MP4, 4 cores, 780 MHz

Geekbench score: 5130 points

Many mobile processors have four or even eight cores. In the case of MediaTek MT6797M Helio X20, their number is brought to ten. As a result, the performance of the chipset is quite high. Especially in those applications where serious graphics processing is not required. It should be noted that only two computing cores are especially powerful here - their clock frequency reaches 2300 MHz. The rest of the cores are divided into two groups. One is able to please with a frequency of 1850 MHz, while the other has this parameter fixed at 1400 MHz. But the result in any case is very good, which is confirmed by synthetic tests, and the smartphones themselves - the interface on them does not slow down at all thanks to the chipset.

As for the graphics accelerator, everything is much worse here. In theory, it can handle viewing and recording 4K video at 30fps. But in games, the lack of power is immediately felt. Modern games on a smartphone with such a processor will go, but with simplified graphics. Especially if the device has a Full HD screen or higher. It should also be noted that the processor supports almost any mobile cameras- if only the resolution of the module does not exceed 32 megapixels.

  • Technical process: 28 nm
  • Architecture: ARM Cortex-A72 + ARM Cortex-A53 (ARMv8)
  • Video accelerator: Adreno 510
  • Geekbench score: 4610 points

They have eight cores, half of which are capable of increasing the frequency to 1800 MHz. Both processors are endowed with a far from ideal graphics accelerator Adreno 510.

    Qualcomm's creation is capable of operating smartphones with a display resolution of up to 2560 x 1600 pixels. As for the camera, it is possible to process data coming from a dual module, the total resolution of which does not exceed 21 megapixels. Everything is in order with the module and with the ability to process data coming from dual-channel LPDDR3 memory.

    Dignity

    • High performance;
    • Viewing 4K video at 30 fps;
    • Theoretical video recording capability at 1080p and 120fps;
    • Not very high cost;
    • Support for dual cameras;
    • The screen resolution can be up to 2560 x 1600 pixels.

    Let's see what are the main differences between the processors of the world leaders - Intel and AMD.

    We will also consider their positive and negative sides.

    Major CPU manufacturers

    Everyone understands perfectly well that on the market computing technology there are two leading companies that design and manufacture the Central Processing Unit (central processing unit), or more simply, processors.

    These devices combine millions of transistors and others logical elements, and are electronic devices of the highest complexity.

    The whole world uses computers, the heart of which is an electronic chip either from Intel or AMD, so it's no secret that both of these companies are constantly fighting for leadership in this area.

    But let's leave these companies alone and move on to the average user who is faced with a dilemma of choice - which is still preferable - Intel or AMD?

    Say what you like, but there is no definite answer to this question, and there cannot be, since both manufacturers have huge potential, and their CPUs are capable of meeting the current requirements.

    When choosing a processor for a device, the user primarily focuses on its performance and cost - relying on these two criteria as the main ones.

    Most of the users have long been divided into two opposing camps, becoming ardent supporters of Intel or AMD products.

    Let's take a look at all the strengths and weaknesses of the devices of these leading companies, so that when choosing a particular one, we rely not on speculation, but on specific facts and characteristics.

    Pros and cons of Intel processors

    So what are the advantages of an Intel processor?

    • First of all, it is very high performance and performance in applications and games that are most optimized for Intel processors.
    • Under the control of these processors, the system operates with maximum stability.
    • It is worth noting that the memory of the second and third levels in Intel CPUs works at more high speeds than in similar processors from AMD.
    • Multithreading plays an important role in performance when working with optimized applications. by Intel in CPUs like Core i7.

    Pros and cons of AMD processors

    • The advantages of AMD processors, first of all, are their affordability in terms of cost, which is remarkably combined with performance.
    • A huge plus is the multi-platform, which allows you to replace one processor model with another without having to change the motherboard.
    • That is, a processor designed for socket AM3 can be installed on socket AM2 + without any negative consequences.
    • It should be noted and multitasking, with which many AMD processors do an excellent job, simultaneously performing work with three applications.
    • In addition, the FX series processors have quite good overclocking potential, which is sometimes badly needed.
    • The disadvantages of AMD's CPUs include higher power consumption than Intel's, as well as work at lower cache speeds of the second and third levels.
    • It should also be noted that most of the processors in the FX line need to additional cooling, which will have to be purchased separately.
    • And one more disadvantage is that fewer games and applications have been adapted and written for AMD processors than for Intel.

    Latest connectors from Intel

    Today, many of the leading CPU manufacturers are equipped with two current connectors. Have Intel they are as follows:

    • LGA 2011 v3 is a combined connector that is focused on the operational assembly of a high-performance personal computer for both servers and end user... The key feature of such a platform is the presence of a RAM controller that successfully operates in multichannel mode. Thanks to this important feature“PCs with these processors offer unprecedented performance. It must be said that an integrated subsystem is not used within such a platform. Unlocking the potential of such chips is possible only with the help of discrete graphics. For this, only the best video cards should be used;
    • thanks to LGA, you can easily organize not only high-performance computing system but also a budget PC. For example, socket LGA 1151 perfect for creating a computing station with an average price policy, at the same time it will have a powerful built-in graphics core Intel series Graphics and support DDR4 memory.

    Latest AMD connectors

    AMD is promoting the following processor sockets today:

    • the main computing platform for such a developer is considered AM3 +... The most productive CPU is considered the lineup FX, which include up to eight compute modules. In addition, such a platform supports an integrated graphics subsystem... However, this is where the graphics core goes into the motherboard rather than being integrated into semiconductor crystals;
    • most recent current AMD CPU socket - FM3 +... AMD's new CPUs are intended to be used in desktop computers and media centers not only at the entry level, but also at the intermediate level. Thanks to this, the most modern integrated solution will be available to the average user for a fairly small amount.

    Work Opportunities

    Many people pay attention to the price of the processor first. It is also important for them that he can easily solve the tasks assigned to him.

    So what can both organizations offer on this point. AMD is not known for its outstanding achievements.

    On the other hand, this processor represents an excellent price / performance ratio. If you set it up correctly, you can expect stable operation without any complaints.

    It is worth noting that AMD has managed to implement multitasking. Thanks to such a processor, various applications are easily launched.

    With it, you can simultaneously install the game and surf the endless expanses of the Internet.

    But Intel is known for more modest results in this area, which confirms the comparison of processors.

    It will not be superfluous to pay attention to the possibility of overclocking, during which the performance of the AMD processor can be easily increased by twenty percent over the standard settings.

    To do this, you just need to use additional software.

    Intel beats AMD in almost everything except multitasking. In addition, Intel has work with

    So choosing a motherboard and power supply should be much more careful in order to prevent freezes with insufficient power.

    Intel vs AMD Power Consumption Graph The same story with heat dissipation. It is high enough for older models. As a result, the standard cooler can hardly cope with the increased cooling.

    Therefore, when buying a CPU from AMD, you must additionally purchase high-quality cooling from any decent company. Keep in mind that quality fans are much less noisy.

    Socket type and performance

    We should also say about performance. After AMD acquired ATI, its creators were able to successfully integrate most graphics capabilities processing in the processor core. These efforts have paid off successfully.

    Those who use an AMD chip for games should have no doubt that they get good performance, which is much better than those of equivalent Intel chips (this is especially true for those who use a card with ATI graphics).

    If it comes to a lot of multitasking, then it is better to opt for Intel, since it has HyperTreasing technology.

    However, this advantage can only be used when the software application is capable of multitasking, that is, the ability to divide tasks into several small parts.

    If the user needs game processor, it is better to combine AMD processor with a video card.

    So between intel and amd sockets a big difference... When choosing suitable option, consider the differences listed in this article. This will greatly simplify the selection of the appropriate option.

    At the end of each year, we summarize the test results of most modern processors, taking into account BIOS updates and changes in performance, after which we distribute the obtained data into three separate categories.

    The first part of our ranking focuses on performance in gaming benchmarks, in the second we will touch on performance in CAD applications for workstations (real-time rendering), and finally in the third we will collect general data on performance, rendering and power consumption.

    No one can always be a leader: a system that lacks performance today may surpass all others tomorrow. So if you have a good strategy, then you can be confident in your future.

    This truth works, but not always. First of all, you need to understand today's PC capabilities, tomorrow's computing needs, and also have a reserve for the future. This is where you need to focus - and plan for a small supply.

    Unfortunately, high productivity always costs more, perhaps even not always proportionally, so it is very important to determine the optimal volume of such a stock.

    Our requests, desires and financial capabilities do not always coincide. However, in this case, there is the concept of "common sense", allowing you to drop insurmountable obstacles. It is always worth combining environmental aspects, such as energy consumption and durability, with economic - costs and profitability of the purchase. Simply put, it's worth buying exactly what you really need (or need in the near future).

    Our testing methodology is described in the article ", so for convenience we will refer to this article. If you are interested in details, we recommend that you refer to it.

    The differences from this method in relation to this testing are reduced to the hardware configuration: processor, RAM, motherboard and cooling system, the features of which can be found in the following table.

    Let's start with two synthetic benchmarks, dividing them into two categories for DirectX11 and DirectX12 support. In the 3DMark Fire Strike test, the number of cores is most important, which increases the performance of older ones multi-core processors not operating at high enough clock speeds, such as the Core i7-6950X. Nice results AMD Threadripper and Ryzen 7 are also demonstrating. Simple quad-core processors have little chance here, as well as Intel six-core processors without Hyper-Threading support.

    The pattern is repeated in 3DMark Time Spy based on DirectX12. Regardless of the software interface, there is nothing to replace the number of cores. The performance becomes even more convincing with increasing clock speeds.

    As in 3DMark, core count plays a major role in Ashes of Singularity: Escalation, followed by clock speed. it good example correct load distribution between multiple threads.

    In Civilization VI, the number of threads also matters, but in processors with eight or more possible threads (for example, in Intel Core i7-7700K using Hyper-Threading, important role clock frequencies also start to play. So this game needs the right balance between core count and clock speed.

    In the game Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War III, the CPU clock speed comes to the fore, while four well-scalable threads will be enough. This lowers Ryzen slightly and boosts the performance of Intel chips.

    Grand Theft auto V is also the site that Intel generally dominates. At the same time, all Ryzen do not look too bad in terms of price-performance ratio.

    In Hitman 2016, the world AMD processors looks pretty good. At the same time, the basic performance of the chips (for example, in the case of the Intel Core i5-8400) is limited by the power of the video card used. it illustrative example the fact that if any of the components serve as limiting factors, any increase in performance can be costly. The key to everything is the right balance: the video card must match the processor level, and vice versa.

    Project Cars is completely dominated by Intel processors. Even the junior quad-core models without Hyper-Threading are significantly ahead of Ryzen 7 and Threadripper. Ryzen 3 and Pentium fail completely, and Ryzen 7 1700 has problems with too low clock speeds. So overclocking is indispensable here.

    Far Cry Primal is the second game in our tests where the graphics card is the limiting factor, but a little clarification is needed here. This game works well with eight threads, and physical cores are not necessary, a quad-core chip with Hyper-Threading will do if the clock speeds are high enough. However, with "purely" quad-core models, this trick will no longer work if their clock frequency does not go beyond certain limits. In other words, frequency is important here, but frequency alone is not enough.

    In the VRMark test, we see a similar picture, and here Threadripper is already ahead of all Ryzen 7 modifications. However, this test is still the domain of Intel chips.

    At first - bad news: There is no single best processor among the ones we tested, so in order to make the right choice, you need to consider all factors, such as the purpose of use, the performance required, the general concept of your PC and your budget. So the good news is that everyone can find the best processor for themselves.

    Games or office applications, workstation packages or HTPCs? Applications and uses are multifaceted and most of us already know how it will be used new processor, even before buying it. The wrong choice not only causes disappointment in the acquisition, but often leads to significant financial losses, especially if you have to resell, exchange or completely replace components that do not fit together.

    There are many options for combining components. Does your CPU match the socket on the motherboard, and if so, does it support it itself? motherboard? Is the cooling system suitable in terms of power for this processor, and if so, does this cooler cover the RAM modules and does it interfere with the installation of the video card in the first slot? PCI Express? There are such "experts" who screw a huge cooler onto a mini-ITX board, and only then think about the case ...

    Processor prices fluctuate like palm trees during a tropical cyclone, and any budding assembler pays attention to them first. Therefore, we are not going to comment on the price level yet, since both the usual market price adjustments and the relative deficit individual models(for example, Coffee lake-s from Intel) makes such comments meaningless within days of being spoken. Therefore, we simply present the "clean" results and leave the readers the opportunity to inquire about prices on their own.
