Many acquaintances, who were very skeptical about the iPhone 5C because of the plastic, instantly changed their opinion to a much more positive one, as soon as they managed to hold it.

Apple iPhone 5C is available for sale in several colors: white, pink, yellow, blue, green. I got yellow for the test, but blue is considered the most popular of them, although it is more blue in color. Such a wealth of colors is aimed primarily at a young and female audience, but I personally know one adult man (traditional orientation) who dreamed of a green iPhone. Not so long ago, I met another grown man talking on blue iPhone 5C. There were definitely buyers for the model, but their number is much less than those who want to own the iPhone 5S and preferably in golden color. This coloring makes a much more pleasant impression live than you expect from it. A truly noble shade, more like beige with a touch of champagne than vulgar and vulgar gold. The silver-white color scheme, in which the test 5S is made, looks more boring than the other colors, blurs more and scratches faster, but there are plenty of its fans. The most popular color is Space Gray - space gray. Both devices have only one complaint about the build quality: tapping around the camera when shaking or small movements. This has happened before - this is the fault of the autofocus mechanism, but it’s somehow unusual to feel such a trinket in a device for 30,000 rubles, especially when competitors don’t already have this.

For two weeks of active use, the devices did not peel off, did not crumble, did not turn into a pile of twisted metal and obscene plastic worn to holes. Apple iPhone 5S got a small scratch on the shiny logo, a few subtle ones appeared on the body and screen of the iPhone 5C small scratches. Alas, on test iPhone 5S revealed a defect in the screen, manifested in a noticeable tapping and squelching when you press it. This is revealed when the screen is warm enough - everything is fine on a cool display. It costs him a few seconds to purposefully poke his fingers harder as the squishing begins. The case also takes place for other users with devices from different parts of the world, so if a defect is found, it is better to immediately contact the service. At times, an incomprehensible backlash of the Home button also appeared, similar to the squelching of the screen, but not dependent on temperature. The problems are not massive, but when they appear, it’s better to immediately take your smartphone to specialists (we remind you that Apple does not have a worldwide warranty on the iPhone).

The branded covers, which were also tested, were perfectly preserved, but only because I hardly used them. The metal and light 5S does not want to be dressed in a noticeably thicker, albeit leather (although they are perfectly combined) case, and a leaky polyurethane case resembling a colander is very amateurish for the 5C and deprives the device of a pleasant streamlining, along the way making it heavier. By the way, it is thanks to this streamlining that the iPhone 5C can be called much more convenient and ergonomic, however, due to the slippery gloss, the chance of accidentally dropping the device is much higher than the metal 5S.

Software

Both devices are running an operating system. iOS systems 7, at the time of writing this review is 7.0.4. All features of the system were discussed in detail in a separate material (link) using an example iPad mini. The phone version of the system does not differ much, and the differences between the iPhone come down to hardware differences (an improved A7 chip with an assistant in the form of an M7, a more advanced camera with new features, a fingerprint scanner).

The iPhone version of the system pleases with the almost universal introduction of the return gesture (swipe from left to right). Now there is absolutely no need to reach for the Back arrow in the upper left corner. Behind this innovation is clearly seen Apple's desire to prepare users for larger iPhone diagonals. You instantly get used to this gesture, and you want to use it on all other devices, but, alas, not all manufacturers have thought of this before.

Number of adapted third-party software under the new iOS 7 is growing and the system already feels much more coherent than at the time of release. Branded Applications Apple also received a redesign and optimization for the 64-bit A7 chip, and the iWork (Pages, Numbers, Keynote) and iLife (Garage band, iPhoto and iMovie) packages became generally free for all owners of the company's new smartphones and tablets. Alas, despite almost seven beta versions and already four add-ons, iOS 7 cannot boast of perfect stability. For no reason, for example, Safari can freeze tightly. There are also crashes from programs that do not better performance in applications.

Numerous animations make the new system feel unnecessarily slow at times, and even the reduced movement in universal settings does not save the situation much - everything becomes faster, but this is not the level of top-end Androids with Snapdragon 800 and Full HD resolution(higher than the iPhone one by 2.85 times, by the way). At the same time, in games and tests with performance and speed, everything is fine, so the claim is precisely to excessive animation. Fortunately, in 7.1 beta this moment was seriously improved, but there is still much to strive for - there is never enough speed.

Sensors and Sensors

As already mentioned, the main difference between the iPhone 5S and 5C, in addition to the new A7 chipset, was the M7 coprocessor and a fingerprint scanner built into a modified Home button with a coating of sapphire glass. It is these two elements that seriously transform the familiar experience of using the Apple iPhone and give a completely new experience from the device. Let's start with the scanner.

When you turn on the device for the first time during initial setup you will be prompted to scan one or more fingers and reinforce the protection with a familiar password. When scanning, you need to put your finger several times and preferably at different angles (pad, tip, half-side, and so on). This will allow you to unlock the device in the most convenient way in the future. You no longer have to press the power button to unlock the screen. top panel- just a little longer than usual, pressing the Home button is enough. If the screen is on, then the button can not be pressed at all - a simple application of a finger is enough. Unlocking is fast and crashes are very rare. Sometimes the system may ask you to enter a digital password. For example, if the finger was not counted several times, the device was turned off or rebooted, and so on. The system has generally become more secure and, in case of suspicious activity, it may ask not only for the password from the phone, but also for the password from Apple account ID (for example, when deleting data). The second most useful application of the scanner was the confirmation of purchases in the App Store or iTunes. No need to enter anything, just one touch and required file downloaded to the device memory. Apple guarantees the confidentiality of processed fingerprints. They are stored in encrypted mathematical form in the depths of the A7 processor (that is, there are no images of your fingers in the form of pictures), where none foreign program cannot be accessed, and it is not possible to turn the data into a finger image. Even company employees will not be able to decrypt your data. I would love to believe that, really. Moreover, the tool turned out to be so convenient that you get used to it instantly. Yes, no one forces you to use the scanner and you can not turn it on at all, but if you have previously encountered similar devices in commercial products (laptops, phones, smartphones), then you simply have to try out the Apple scanner and understand that no one else in the world made this thing so cool and comfortable.

The second significant feature was the dedicated assistant processor M7. It monitors your physical activity and movements around the clock, collecting data from a gyroscope, accelerometer and other background without affecting autonomy. The appearance of the M7 chip in the iPhone makes most smart bracelets that perform a similar task useless. More and more sports software is getting M7 support. From myself, I can recommend the Argus program. It is very simple, functional and intuitive, and the design is made in the best traditions of iOS 7. This is how (and like the new Tweetbot) applications in iOS 7 style should look like. On the Web, I came across information that the M7 helps the iPhone 5S better navigate in space and, for example, not waste power searching for a network in a place where the signal reception is disgusting. In practice, I did not notice anything like this, but, perhaps, I looked inattentively :)

Camera

Both smartphones are equipped with 8-megapixel cameras with autofocus and flash, but the iPhone 5S has increased the pixel size and aperture, and the optics has become wide-angle. Added to this is a dual LED flash with different tints to ensure the best photo in poor conditions. In practice, the difference between devices in terms of photo and video quality is barely noticeable in good conditions, but in other cases, 5S is able to provide more high quality photo and more light capture. Because of this, some night shots are much brighter than they are in reality (Lumia disease). Interestingly, similar shots on the iPhone 5C are sometimes much more realistic and close to the real view, but too noisy for good photo. In the examples below, the iPhone 5S is always on the left, in panoramas - on top.

Performance and Benchmarks

The Apple iPhone 5C is based on the 32nm A6 chipset, which includes a dual-core 1.3GHz processor Apple development, using elements of the Cortex-A9 and A15 architectures, as well as a tri-core graphics accelerator PowerVR SGX543MP3. The amount of RAM is 1 GB. This chip was first used in the iPhone 5, so it migrated to the 5C unchanged. The performance of the chipset is more than enough to run all the applications and iOS 7 comfortably, while the graphics power is still optimal for most new demanding games. The only parameter by which this chip can be considered obsolete is the 32nm manufacturing process, which is no longer able to maintain the best autonomy of the device. The iPhone 5S uses the latest Apple A7 chipset, the world's first commercially available mobile 64-bit ARM chip. It has twice the performance of the A6 chip, is manufactured on a 28nm process, uses the ARMv8 instruction set, and is equipped with the latest and most advanced graphics adapter from Imagination Technologies - PowerVR G6430. RAM remains at 1 GB. Many spears have already been broken around the topic of the advisability of using 64-bit processors in mobile devices: someone thinks that this is marketing and there will be no practical benefit without increasing the size of RAM to 4 GB, someone, on the contrary, sees this as one of the main innovations of recent years. So why does the iPhone 5S need a 64-bit processor?

No one is surprised by the weight of mobile games, rapidly approaching the standard of 2 GB, and in the near future, the space they occupy in the memory of devices will grow in proportion to the growth of graphic capabilities and functions. It is for this purpose that the use of such a processor makes sense, since all this huge array of data will be processed faster. In addition, this is a huge reserve for the future, when mobile technology Apple will grow to the need for 4 GB of RAM, which will also have a positive effect on performance. But another key and not the most obvious advantage of using such a chip in smartphones and Apple tablets is to bring it to a desktop-like form to simplify the development of applications for both platforms, which in the near future will allow you to use the same programs on both iPhone / iPad and MacBook or iMac, without the need for additional conversion or adaptation. The Apple ecosystem is always famous for high-quality and convenient software, so the introduction of a 64-bit chip makes sense and practical benefits, plus it gives developers the opportunity to start optimizing their products for future Apple chips right now.

In practice, the situation with performance is as follows: where the iPhone 5C slows down, the 5S confidently shows itself. This is noticeable, for example, when using a camera, video editing software or working with sound. In games, the difference is not always noticeable. Somewhere loading is a little faster, somewhere a little faster rendering, but in the future the difference will be more and more noticeable. Of course, this is not so much a merit of 64-bit, but more powerful hardware in general.

According to the results of benchmarks, the iPhone 5C shows itself as follows: Geekbench 3 - 712/1283, 3D Mark - 5857/3263/5662, GFXBench - 6.8/13/6.8/14/30/37 fps, AnTuTu 3D Rating - 11828/ 2620.

Apple iPhone 5S shows the following results: Geekbench 3 - 1417/2567, 3D Mark - Maxed Out!/Maxed Out!/13982, GFXBench - 27/37/25/36/64/53 fps, AnTuTu 3D Rating - 13665/5046.

As you can see, the difference is very noticeable. The advantage in Geekbench in favor of 5S is exactly those same two times, the test itself also ended with the device twice as fast as on 5C. According to the results of 3D Mark, a twofold and even threefold increase in performance and speed of passing tests is also noticeable. The difference between the first two results in GFXBench in favor of 5S (which are the most difficult graphics tests there) is simply horrendous. Groundwork for the future gaming features colossal.

In the case of games, the situation is as follows: graphical differences are currently minimal or none at all. Even in the optimized for iOS 7 and 64-bit Infinity Blade 3, everything looks equally great on both 5C and 5S. The difference at the moment is only in the download speed - it is faster everywhere by 5S. Separately, I want to say about heating. Both devices get quite noticeably warm during gaming and using applications, however, thanks to the plastic case, the 5C feels barely warm, while the metal 5S at times turns into a hot frying pan. A cover or case will be a salvation.

According to autonomy tests, we can say that 5S performs one and a half times better than 5C. If, with active use, the latter is unlikely to survive until the evening (from morning and hours until 15-16 - completely), then with the first one there is no need to worry about this. In HD video playback mode, both smartphones can last up to 10 hours on maximum brightness and volume (discharge is 10-12% per hour) (relevant only for hardware-supported formats, otherwise playback will be software-based with high power consumption). This is especially surprising when you consider the battery capacity: 1510 mAh for the 5C and 1570 mAh for the 5S. Competitors based on Android with one and a half to two times more capacious batteries often can not boast of such indicators. Yes, the iPhone has smaller and lower resolution screens, the system is more optimized, and so on, but the result is still amazing. In the case of games, both devices are discharged at maximum brightness by 25-30% per hour, which will give a total of about 3.5-4 hours of games.

To telephone functions there are no complaints. LTE support in Russian iPhone will appear soon, after the settlement of all issues of quality of service between operators and Apple. The sound quality in headphones (both expensive and simple) is traditionally beyond praise. In this regard, both one and the other iPhone are good, there is no difference in quality, and the battery charge is enough for 40 hours of listening to music.

The start of sales of new iPhones took place in most countries of the world and has long affected Russia. The devices are offered at a price of 24,990 rubles for the basic version of the iPhone 5C with 16 GB of memory and 29,990 rubles for 5S in a similar configuration. Due to exchange rates, Russian prices (including, by the way, VAT in the amount of several thousand rubles) turned out to be even lower than some European ones, which, of course, cannot but rejoice. According to various reports, the iPhone 5S was warmly received by the mass buyer, and the 5C was received much cooler, whose sales are worse (however, in the same Moscow, I increasingly see people with colored 5Cs, not 5S). Why did it happen? Traditionally, many people are used to buying a new iPhone, because it is usually better than the previous one in everything. In the case of the 5S, this cannot be said about the screen size and materials (although the durability of the coating has improved), but otherwise we have a really new iPhone with numerous improvements and several innovative solutions. In addition, the appearance of a new golden color has provoked an increased demand for the model among those who want to stand out and declare to the whole world that they own a new expensive toy.

Apple iPhone 5C remained the same iPhone 5 in a new case with minor improvements (front camera, frequencies, battery). Yes, thanks to the competent and high-quality execution, it feels as cool and new as the 5S, but many expected more from the device. affordable price(in Russia - at the level of 20,000 rubles) and the expectations of buyers did not materialize. At a price of 25,000 from the device, I would like to get a similar filling to the 5S, and the price tag would be determined by a simpler case. As a result, the model can only be recommended to those who for some reason did not buy an iPhone 5, wanted a cool bright iPhone without any cases all their lives, or does not see much point in switching to an iPhone 5S with the same screen and body as in 5, but with wants to play something new from Apple. The phone will be a great gift as first iPhone child, teenager or girlfriend: it is cute, bright, comfortable, it is easy to stand out in the crowd with it, and in terms of materials it is better than most plastic products of competitors. The autonomy of the device is not the best, the speed of work in some applications, too, the "iron" touched on future new ones. quality games and more advanced software is not enough - these are, perhaps, the main disadvantages of the device.

The Apple iPhone 5S is in another league and is for those who want the best iPhone ever made by Apple. Fingerprint scanner, the optional M7 processor and the powerful A7 make for a great user experience and can really be a good reason to upgrade from iPhone 5 to new flagship. Complaints are only small size screen, which is no longer very suitable for top modern games and comfortable consumption of content, yes, perhaps, heating metal case. In terms of better suitability for top games, browsing and content consumption, the smartphone has a cosmic number of competitors from the Android camp with huge screens. On the other hand, few smartphones can boast such a wonderful fusion of design, materials, a high-quality music player, a good photo and video camera, and there are simply no comparable compact Android flagships on sale yet.
