Comparison of Apple Watch and Apple Watch Sport. Which Apple Watch to buy: a comparison of the characteristics of current models

Good day!

Apple Watch 3 went on sale quite recently and I was already lucky enough to own it! I already have experience with Apple Watch Series 1 Sport 38mm in a silver case, so I decided to upgrade the next model and chose the steel 42mm.

In Russia, the steel version of the watch is not yet available for sale, my model was bought in Japan.

The steel version of the watch is available in two colors: black and white.

Spot series in three: black, silver and rose gold.

Previously, it seemed to me that the 42 mm size is a version exclusively for men, that on a fragile female hand they would look heavy and this is true, but now it does not bother me, all the same, with a 42 mm screen, it is much more convenient for me, and to give the watch more Feminine - I ordered some pretty feminine straps on ebay.

Agree that for girls, the ability to change straps is very useful, because we love different styles of clothing, as well as our mood and color preferences are changeable. And the Chinese brothers help us save on original straps, which gives us the opportunity to have 3-4 replacement accessories in stock, at the price of one original (and after buying a watch, there will hardly be money left for replacement accessories)

New Apple Watch Series 3 manufacturer positions an order of magnitude higher their younger brothers, for the following reasons:

  • more powerful processor;
  • in this regard, Siri began to speak, i.e. answer by voice to a voice request (previously, the answer was only in the form of text);
  • Improved retina screen, it became twice as bright (this is useful in bright sunlight) ;;
  • More powerful battery (should be enough for 2 days of active use, to be honest, Apple Watch Series 1 Sport was enough for 2 days too);
  • Water resistance: you can swim and take a shower in the watch (it's better to swim in fresh water, sea water will easily damage the watch case);
  • Built-in GPS module;
  • Barometric altimeter (the watch is sensitive to changes in altitude, i.e. it understands movement up or down and can take this into account when measuring physical activity);
  • Microchip for wireless communication (the watch can work independently from the phone, but this is only possible if your operator supports this function. In Russia, not a single mobile operator so far supports this function and it is not known when it will become)

This is how the watch packaging now looks:

For comparison, the previous model had a completely different box shape, in my opinion, less compact:

When you open the box, we immediately see the clock in this form:

The watch lies on such a plastic stand, which can later be used as a "base" for this watch:

As usual, the set includes two sizes of straps S / M and M / L:

Wireless charging station (magnetically attached to the back of the watch and thus charges it):

The charging wire is now 1 m long, my previous Apple Watch Series 1 Sport had a 2 m wire length, but for me this is not important, so charging will take up less space on the road.

New and old clocks nearby:

If you, like me, change the model of the watch, then when you link it to your iphone, all the settings of the old clock will switch to the new ones, i.e. those screens that you configured earlier will automatically appear on the new watch.

By the way, Apple Watch Series 3 is compatible with iphone models starting from 5S and you need to update to the latest version of IOS 11.0.1 to sync.

For those who are not familiar with Apple smartwatches, I will explain: on your phone, you can customize a great variety of screens on your watch to your taste and color, to make it clearer I will show you how it looks in the phone menu:

You can change the screens according to your mood and needs by simply flipping, here are possible variations on this topic:

Screens with views of nature and various world megacities change over the course of the day and the time of sunrise and sunset in your region, i.e. For example, you have a London screensaver, when morning is dawn on your screensaver, in the afternoon the sun is at its zenith and at sunset the sun gradually sets on the clock screen and a night city appears, this is how it looks:

Honestly, I really like this feature. A trifle, of course, but very nice!

Another important feature of the "smart watch" is that when you slightly change the angle of your hand to see the time, the screen lights up automatically and you see the time and other information from the screen (weather or physical activity, time in another region, etc.) ).

This is how the 42mm watch looks on my hand:

For comparison, I show the dimensions 42mm and 38mm on my hand with the same splash screen:

The main menu power button (wheel) is now colored red for some reason:

To be honest, this design decision surprised me very much, it looks like an amazing red spot on a strict black color (on the steel color of a light watch model, in my opinion, red is even more ridiculous), I solved this issue for myself - by ordering a red strap, later I will add a photo with red strap in the tip (when he gets to me).

An example of working with applications on the watch:

As I mentioned, clicking on the "red button" takes us to the main menu, in which we see the icons of all applications available on the watch:

I chose the weather (the cities that interest you in this menu can be customized to your liking):

I chose the Google maps menu and set the object I want to get to, the clock gives out the route:

This is how the back panel of the clock looks like (absolutely the same as before, nothing has changed):

The basic set comes with a silicone black strap, which has a very comfortable buckle, everything is thought out so that the buckle cannot get wrinkled or deteriorate in use:

When swiping from top to bottom: we see the latest notifications (messenger messages, sms, missed calls, activity update progress).

When swiping from bottom to top we see this menu:

Top leftbadge- work of the watch from cellular communication autonomously (the function that is not yet supported by cellular operators in Russia).

A drop- cleaning the wheel from moisture after interacting with water. By clicking on it, the phone says the actions that must be taken with the wheel so that the water comes out.

AND there was a "flashlight" mode it works in three variations: just a white screen, a flickering screen, and a red screen. I checked the mode - it really works like a flashlight in a dark room (another trifle, but nice).

flashlight mode

For comparison, this is how the same menu looked like in the first model:

Useful functionality of the Apple Watch:

  • answer calls without taking out the phone (conveniently while driving);
  • receive SMS messages from messengers to the watch and display them on the screen, the ability to reply to messages with short options (ok, okay, no, of course, no problem) or you can dictate the answer, the watch transforms voice into text (convenient in class, meetings, cinema, theater);
  • control of daily activity, calculation of calories spent per day;
  • the watch reminds you of the necessary rest or planned exercise;
  • pulse control;
  • mobility (using maps, weather, Siri, making phone calls from watch using Siri)

Summing up, the fundamental differences for me personally between new and old watches:

  • a large screen is much more convenient and useful for me;
  • I like the watch in the steel case more, firstly, this model has a sapphire crystal, and secondly, you feel that you are wearing a serious watch, in the aluminum case I had the feeling that the watch is plastic and very fragile, also the glass and case are easily scratched, therefore had to use a cover. Now I don't need a cover.
  • water resistance - when hit by a shower, washing dishes and in other cases of contact with water, the watch is protected!
  • the possibility of autonomous work of the watch from the phone (I think soon many operators will start supporting this function);
  • improved calorie counting and heart rate measurement system;
  • response time - the watch works many times faster than its younger brothers.

It seems to me that the differences between the models of the old and new watch series are not fundamental at the moment (given the controversial situation with the support of copying a SIM card to a watch).

For me personally, the watch case and the screen size are more important, which noticeably affects the functionality.

But in any case, a "smart watch" is more of a toy than a really necessary thing, although in our rhythm and lifestyle, perhaps soon they will become a necessity!

The price of my watch model in the official Apple Store was 79,000 Japanese prices, which in terms of rubles at the current exchange rate of 40,000.

Update from 10/16/2017, as promised - photos of the interchangeable red strap in the style of Hermes:

We all fell in love with this smart watch Apple Watch, but even the most dedicated fans of this manufacturer are already confused about the difference between series 1, 2 and 3. If there are practically no external differences and the first series is similar to the third, then the most important changes lie inside. And the characteristics can differ significantly. Let's try to figure out what the difference is and which watch is right for you.

To clearly and clearly see what the difference is, we will create a table where we compare 1, 2 and 3 series in terms of characteristics. And then we will tell you about all the differences in more detail.

As we can see from the table, with each series, the watch became better, faster and smarter. If in the first hours there was not enough processor power and the clock could freeze, then in the second series they already made a dual-core processor.

Apple smart watch appearance:

The iWatch Series 1 was released in four colors (Silver, Gold, Rose Gold and Space Gray). 2 types of sizes - 38 and 42 mm. The body is made of aluminum.

Apple Watch Series 2 has become a little thicker (by almost a millimeter), the color scheme remains the same. But in this series, in addition to aluminum, stainless steel and ceramics are used. And also there was a sports series with a striking design - Nike + with special sports functions.

Watch Series 3. Same case with the same colors. Analogue of Watch 2 in design and color.

Apple watch display.

The first and the second and even the third series did not undergo significant differences in the display. All watch series use OLED technology. Screen brightness. In the 2nd and 3rd generation Apple Watch, the screen became twice as bright - 1000 nits versus 450 in Series 1. The display resolution did not change.

Water resistant.

Series 2 and 3 can be safely submerged in water to a depth of 50 meters and they will not have anything. In the third series, water training appeared, so you can safely go to the pool and set records in swims for 50 and 100 meters. But do not forget to click on the special drop icon to activate the water-resistant mode. After water procedures, the watch will push out excess water by itself. The very first model withstood only splashes and is afraid of immersion in water.

Processor and memory.

In the early hours, the main flaw was a rather weak processor, which was developed by Apple and dubbed the S1. This is a single core processor with a frequency of 520 Mhz. Its power is barely enough for applications and comfortable work. In the second and third series, this drawback was taken into account and a new dual-core processor was created, which was named S2. 512 MB RAM turned out to be enough for any tasks and applications, therefore, both in the first and in the second hours, the amount of RAM is the same. Due to new features and more resource-intensive applications in the third series, the memory capacity was increased to 768MB.

With GPS or not?

Apple Watch 1 is totally dependent on the iPhone and that's why they used the data from the smartphone. Apple has equipped the second and third Watch with a GPS module - now you can track the distance traveled directly on the watch. You can safely go for a walk and leave your phone at home. Running around with a smartphone is also inconvenient, which is why GPS is a very important improvement in series 2 and 3.

Battery in hours.

This is the main drawback of perhaps all watches and the Watch is no exception. It is not possible to fit a large battery into a small case. The battery life of the watch will only last for a day, and if you don't put it on charge before going to bed, then you can use the watch for a couple of hours at most the next day. In the second and third series, a slight increase in battery capacity is observed. Most likely, this is due to the advent of GPS. It consumes some additional energy, and in order for the second and third generation of watches to work no less than the previous one, it was necessary to slightly increase the battery.

What's the difference between Apple Watch Series 2 and Series 3?

Apple recently unveiled its 3rd generation watch - let's take a look at what the company has been working on for a whole year and what has changed since the Watch Series 2? This time we will do without a comparative table, because Apple in the 3rd generation of its watches has also added a model with a built-in SIM card, which means that we have to compare as many as 6 “different” devices! Given the fact that the dimensions have remained practically unchanged (a couple of millimeters does not count), we will focus exclusively on the most important differences between Series 3 and Series 2.

So what's new in the 2017 Apple Watch 3?

Is there a LTE version now? this is the most important difference. True, it is absolutely useless for us - this function does not work in Russia yet, although telecom operators are already thinking about its implementation in Russia. The fact is that the watch uses a built-in SIM card - our operators do not yet provide such services and opportunities.

  1. Design element. By the way, the LTE version has one fundamental difference in terms of design - the scroll wheel is now with a red dot! Watch Series 3 LTE features a red scroll wheel
  2. CPU. Of course, Apple Watch Series 3 received a new S3 processor (which is claimed to be 70% faster than Series 2), as well as a special wireless microchip - W2 (similar to that used in AirPods).
  3. RAM. The RAM value has also grown to 768 MB (in the second generation it was 512 MB).
  4. Inner memory. For the version without LTE, nothing has changed, the size of the internal storage is still 8 GB. But Series 3 with a SIM card will receive an increased volume - 16 GB.
  5. Barometric altimeter. Now the clock can count how many floors you have climbed or descended.
  6. Bluetooth 4.2. The version of the "blue tooth" has become slightly higher (in Series 2 - Bluetooth 4.0). What is the plus? The data transfer rate increases. Considering that a lot of data is first downloaded to the iPhone, and then via Bluetooth to the Apple Watch, this will obviously not be superfluous. Nothing else has changed - these are the same good Apple Watch Series 2. With water protection, GPS, promised battery life in 18 hours (with mixed use), etc. So which Watch should you choose - 1st, 2nd or 3rd generation?

Apple Watch Series 1 vs. Series 3.

Actually, after all these comparisons, this is the most important question. Considering the fact that Apple releases new models approximately once a year, now we will find out - which watch to buy in 2017-2018?

(10 estimates, average: 4,40 out of 5)

Apple Watch Is a companion device for the Apple iPhone smartphone. As of the beginning of 2018, there have been three generations of this smartwatch and several additional versions.

The size

Regardless of the generation, the Apple Watch smartwatch has two sizes (screen diagonals) - 38 and 42 mm. The difference is only observed in thickness:

  • Series 1 - 5 mm;
  • Series 2 and 3 - 4mm.

We are talking here about the standard versions of watches. Edition is slightly (by a fraction of a millimeter) thicker.

Display

The screen resolution in all versions of the watch is the same - 272 × 340 pixels for 38 mm model and 312 × 390 pixels for 42mm. The difference lies in the brightness of the display. For series 1 it is 450 cd / m2, and for the next generations it is already 1000 cd / m2.

In all versions, the screen is made using OLED technology and spreads the pressure (Force Touch). Protective glass - Ion-X. In series 3, its durability has been increased. The series 2 Edition has a sapphire crystal.

Autonomy

In all generations of watches, the battery provides up to 18 hours of battery life.

Processor and memory

All versions of the watch use a proprietary dual-core processor, which is updated annually to a more efficient revision. The amount of permanent memory, regardless of the version, is 8 GB.

The difference lies in the amount of RAM. In series 1 and 2 its 515 MB, in series 3 - 768 MB.

Water resistance

Apple Watch series 1 comes with a splash-proof design. This means that you can wash your hands in them - and no more. The second and third generations are carried out in a waterproof case, which, according to the ISO 22810: 2010 specifications, ensures the device's operability during short-term diving to a depth of 50 m.

This means that the watch can be used in the rain, in the shower, during short swims in the pool or the sea. Not allowed - for diving or prolonged stay in the water.

Connection

All versions of the watch support Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. The third generation added support for mobile Internet using eSIM (which in Russia as of the beginning 2018 year does not work).

Sensors

All watch versions are equipped with:

  • Heart rate monitor- a sensor for measuring heart rate;
  • Accelerometer and gyroscope- sensors for measuring physical activity;
  • Photometer- a sensor for measuring ambient light and automatically adjusting the brightness of the display.

The GPS module for geolocation and positioning was only added in series 3 and is present in series 3.

Series 3 has also added a barometric altimeter, a sensor designed to measure altitude. Counts both floors climbed and mountain peaks climbed.

Materials (edit)

Apple Watch series 1 made of aluminum and complemented by a strap made of polymer materials. In the Edition modification, they are gold plated.

Apple Watch series 2 made of aluminum or stainless steel and complemented by a nylon, leather or metal strap, depending on the edition. In the Edition modification, their case is made of ceramic.

Apple Watch series 3 made of aluminum and complemented by a strap made of polymer materials. In additional modifications, the strap can be leather or steel. In the Edition version, the case is made of ceramic.

Siri and phone calls

You can only make and answer phone calls on Series 3 - but not in Russia, because eSIM technology is not supported in this country.

Which Apple Watch to choose for a girl

Choosing a watch for girl, you should pay attention to the following parameters:

  • The size. For a miniature female handle, a small watch is better - 38 mm. They are aimed at wrists with a girth of 13-20 cm. However, nothing prevents a girl from wearing a 42-mm version;
  • Price. The 38 mm version usually costs about 2.5 thousand rubles less than the 42 mm version. If the price is critical, it is recommended to pay attention to the smaller size;
  • Version. If a girl needs a device to view notifications, calls and other events, the standard configuration will do. Nike + Is the perfect device for athletic girls. A series Hermes and version Edition- for those who appreciate style;
  • Generation. The third is definitely recommended - it is both more secure and more functional than all the others.

Apple Watch series 3 - what's new?

Released in 2017, series 3 received the following innovations and opportunities:

  • LTE andeSIM. The watch can go online and receive voice calls. Unfortunately, as of the beginning of 2018, eSIM does not work in Russia and the CIS countries;
  • Headphone connectivityAirPods from company " Apple» . Through them, you can listen to music from the Apple Music service, receive voice responses from Siri and talk;
  • Wireless charger... The watch can be charged both through the complete cradle and through a special branded AirPower device from the company " Sub»;
  • Barometric altimeter. Measures the height - from the number of floors climbed to the peaks conquered during mountaineering;
  • New processor and more RAM provide great performance.

The rest of the new features were brought by the watchOS 4 operating system, which improved the heart rate monitor and added several new programs.

Key differences between all Apple watch series

In a nutshell, the differences are as follows:

  • First generation- the initial release of a companion device from the Cupertino company (and at the same time the cheapest);
  • Second generation- great screen;
  • Third generation- maximum functionality within the ecosystem " Apple».

Should you buy an Apple Watch? conclusions

If you have an iPhone of one of the latest models (newer than 4), and you need a companion device for viewing notifications, calls, quick access to Siri and some applications, then definitely “yes”. Also Apple Watch»Will appeal to lovers of an active lifestyle. The device is very convenient for everyday use.

But if there is no iPhone, then it is not needed. You won't even be able to activate them on an Android smartphone (or another).

Smart watches were developed without Steve Jobs' involvement. Their project was handled by Tim Cook, who led the team after Jobs left. IWatch- This is a unique development, which has every chance to take a leading position in the market of modern technologies. This product was developed for regular users of the IPhone 5, 6. There is a lot of controversy today about how useful this invention is for society and whether it is needed at all. But the brand takes its toll. The watch proved to be in demand and popular all over the world. People in all countries are eagerly awaiting the entry of this product to the market. The most popular were two models: classic and sports. They are similar to each other, but there are still some differences. Before choosing this or that option, you need to study the advantages and disadvantages of both models.

Differences in design and specifications

Apple Watch Sport are the simplest and most affordable version of this product. They have simple yet reliable specifications. Among the factors affecting the quality of work and the durability of the goods, the following features of the watch are distinguished:

  1. The body is made of durable anodized aluminum.
  2. The screen is covered with regular glass of the Ion-X series. It is less durable than sapphire, but has better optical properties.
  3. The screen is available in two sizes: 38 mm and 42 mm.
  4. The watch is waterproof.

When purchasing this product, you have the opportunity to choose from 10 different model variations. The straps are removable, multi-colored, they are commercially available from different materials. To understand which strap suits best, you need to try them on with your watch. Silicone, rubber or iron - the choice is up to the buyer. Almost all shades are combined with dark gray and light gray body colors.

Apple Watch in the classic version it costs an order of magnitude more and has different technical characteristics, although in appearance this is not always possible to understand. This model also has a screen in two sizes - 38 mm and 42 mm. Accordingly, the price for a larger screen will be higher, and for a smaller one will be lower. The case is made of stainless steel, and the screen is covered with sapphire glass, which is less susceptible to mechanical damage. You can also choose a variety of straps in different colors for this type of device. There are 20 models in total in this series, so a potential buyer has a lot to choose from.

Description of the functional area

Classic version and Apple Watch Sport practically do not differ in the performance of their functions. Both devices bind to the iPhone 5, 6. Both models are designed not only to provide information like a regular mechanical or electronic watch, but also serve as a small computer wearable on the hand.

With the help of such "smart" watches, you can completely control the work of the IPhone. Control of volume, music, applications, and much more is now available even if the main device is not at hand. Convenient IPhone search function: if the user has lost his phone, then with a single click on the watch, the IPhone will respond with an appropriate signal.

Watch Series 2 is the second version of Apple smartwatches, presented in September 2016. This device was discontinued a year later (September 2017) with the release of the Watch Series 3.

What's the difference between Watch Series 1 and Series 2?

Both versions of the watch were announced on September 7, 2016 at. Series 1 is the same original  Watch, but with a more powerful S1P dual-core processor. Conventionally, they can be called a "minor" (small) upgrade of the very first Apple smart watches.

- this is already a major update to the original version. They have:

- Full protection against moisture;
- GPS module for determining speed and location even without an iPhone;
- More than 2 times brighter display;
- Powerful S2 dual-core processor.

Frame

Apple Watch Series 1 and Series 2 are identical in design.

Basic models Apple Watch Series 1 and Series 2 and the special edition Series 2 Nike + has a silver-colored aluminum body. The special editions of Series 2 - Hermès and Edition - received other materials: stainless steel and ceramic, respectively.

In addition, the back of the Apple Watch Series 1 is made of composite material, while the Apple Watch Series 2 is made of ceramic glass.

In terms of dimensions, the Series 2 watch with a 38 mm display is slightly thicker (11.4 mm versus 10.5 mm) and slightly heavier (28.2 g versus 25 g) than the Series 1. The same is the case with the model. by 42 mm (the difference in thickness is identical, in weight - 34.2 g versus 30 g). As you can see, the differences are very small, so, in general, you can not even pay attention to them.

Display

The display brightness in Series 2 has been increased by more than 2x compared to the original model - from 450 to 1,000 nits. Apple is proud to say this is the brightest screen the company has ever produced. How important is it? You will immediately feel the difference between the display of the original Watch (or Series 1) and Series 2 on a sunny day when you want to see something on the display of the watch.

The aluminum versions of the Apple Watch (Series 1, Series 2, Nike) have an Ion-X display, while the stainless steel and ceramic Apple Watch (Series 2, Hermès and Edition) have a sapphire crystal. ...

CPU

Both S1P and S2 are dual-core chips. But the Series 2 watch processor has a newer and therefore more powerful processor and graphics. Accordingly, from the point of view of technical characteristics, Series 2 is a more interesting investment of money, because all other things being equal, this model will work faster after receiving all the updates from Apple.

Moisture protection

The Series 1 only has splash protection - in other words, if you wash your hands or practice without removing your watch, nothing bad will happen. But it is not recommended to immerse them in water (most likely, with a short contact with the liquid, nothing "like that" will happen either, but here you are already acting at your own peril and risk).

Series 2 received real moisture protection - with the new Watch you can swim and "drown" them at a depth of 50 meters (the main thing is to have time to get them from the bottom in 30 minutes). Apple, of course, still does not recommend using the watch for divers.
