Webinar FM has special requirements for the channel and specific traffic consumption - loads at 20:30 can exceed the usual daily ones by 20-30 times. The service is often used by organizations with a distributed system of offices, so the issue of signal delay was critical. About 70% of service users are from Moscow and St. Petersburg, so servers were needed in the European part of Russia, and even better - right in Moscow.

DIY clouds

On this page we will tell you how to make do-it-yourself clouds at home from cotton wool and starch paste.

In order to make clouds with your own hands at home, you will need: a lot of cotton wool, potato starch, plain water, a glass, a water container.

How to make clouds from cotton wool yourself and decorate the children's room with them

The process of preparing clouds at home can be divided into several stages.

For clouds, in addition to cotton wool, we need a starch paste. To make a potato starch paste, take a glass of cold water and stir two teaspoons of potato starch into it. Pour the resulting mixture into a ladle and bring to a boil, but do not boil it. During the heating process, do not forget to stir the starch solution. Let cool. The paste will be ready when it becomes thick enough. Then it can be smeared with a brush.

Leave the welded glue to cool to room temperature.

The basis of the clouds will be cotton wool. You will need a lot of cotton wool. Form clouds of the desired size from cotton wool.

Prepare a dish or basin that can be used to dip the clouds in the paste. Pour the previously prepared and cooled paste into it.

Briefly dip the clouds made of cotton wool one at a time into the paste and take them out.

Cloud storage

Spread the glue with your fingers more evenly over the surface of the cotton cloud. If necessary, excess glue can be removed from the cotton cloud by simply wringing it out.

Put blanks of cotton clouds treated with paste on a plastic tray or window sill. You can even use large ceramic or glassware with a smooth surface for this.

Leave the cotton clouds soaked in the paste to dry for about a day. For even drying, periodically after a couple of hours, try to turn them over. After drying, dried cotton clouds can be slightly wrinkled.

In order to decorate the interior of a child's room with clouds, tie strings to the clouds and attach them to the ceiling.

Another way to make a cloud

Another way to make a cloud yourself and a great idea for a photo with clouds.

First you need to inflate the balloons, it is desirable that there are a lot of balloons, and tie them with one rope in the form of a cloud. Most of all, the shape of the cloud resembles a triangle.

Spread the balls with PVA glue and glue pieces of white paper to them using the papier-mâché technique, so that there are no gaps left so that they create a single whole.

On top of the paper of the future cloud, stick ordinary cotton wool or synthetic winterizer from an old down jacket or an old jacket. Keep the future cloud hanging until it dries.

When the cloud dries up, you can imitate its flight, you can hang it on a tall tree or on the ceiling, or even better, fill the balloons with helium, if there are enough balloons and a little cotton wool, then it is possible that it will soar by itself. However, hanging a cloud is the best option.

In the past few years, cloud storage technologies have become more and more popular among Internet users.

How to create your own NextCloud cloud storage?

Dropbox, Sugarsync, iCloud, GoogleDrive services - allow you to keep files at hand and have access to them from anywhere on the Internet. But these repositories also have several disadvantages: the volume of stored files is limited, services cost money, you do not know on which servers your data is stored, and the most unpleasant factor is that the files do not belong to you, but to the organization that owns this server.

There are solutions that allow you to use a hosting server as a personal cloud for storing your data. You can access your personal cloud from any personal computer through Windows Explorer or any other file manager. Everything works and is set up ridiculously easy, and you don't need the skills of a system administrator at all in order to organize your own remote information storage.

We want to introduce you to two small and simple programs that allow you to mount an FTP resource as a local or network drive. The first program is FTPDrive, the second is called NETdrive. They serve the same purpose and have similar functionality, but FTPDrive has one rather significant drawback - it does not work on the Windows 7 operating system.

Let's start the review with FTPDrive v3.5

Download the program from the official website of the killprog.com developer, install and run it.

In the initial window, you can Russify the program (point 1) and set the drive letter of the cloud in Explorer (point 2). Next, click the “Edit servers list manually” button (item 3) to tell the program the path to the hosting account.

Enter the FTP access data (provided to you by the host) and save using the “Add” button.

Setup completed.

Now in the “My Computer” directory - in the “Network Places” section, a new “network device” item will appear, which looks and manages like a regular disk on your computer, but in fact it is a personal cloud on its own hosting.

Now you can easily manage files on the server using common Windows commands, including creating folders and deleting files. If you have a sufficient Internet connection speed, the program will allow you to play media files directly from the cloud storage.

NET Drive Overview

The second NETDrive application is more stable and compatible with Windows 7. You can download it from the official site netdrive.net.

After downloading, install and run the program. In the initial window, enter the details of your FTP resource (point 2) and establish a connection.

After clicking the “Connect” button, the program will mount your FTP as a local hard drive.

Procedure completed. Your personal cloud on your own hosting is ready.

Using hosting from Besthosting.ua you can create an unlimited number of FTP accounts and create many cloud storages for different purposes. Also, you can create accounts - for different users, for example, employees of your organization of different ranks, or friends.

It is worth noting that when installing the program, it immediately tries to register in startup. Using the settings, you can set up automatic mounting of an FTP account in the form of a hard disk at the start of the operating system.

There are also paid analogues - Webdrive.com, ExpanDrive, Сyberduck. They have similar functionality, but with a wider range of settings.

The procedure for connecting a network drive is quite simple.

For operating systems Windows 7, Windows Vista:

Using the "Start" button, go to "My Computer".

In the window that opens, click "Connect to a site where you can store documents and images."

Follow the instructions of the installer and in the paragraph “network address or Internet address” enter the address of your FTP account.

In the next window, specify the login for the connection or select "anonymous connection".

Give the shortcut a name and complete the procedure.

Now in Windows Explorer, in the “Network Locations” section, you can see your files on the remote server.

The cloud is ready. Files are available for management by standard Windows methods and the system does not limit the number of connected accounts.

To add “network storage” in the Windows 2000 or XP operating system, you need to go to “Network Places” and activate the “Add a new item to the network places” item, or go to “My Computer”, activate the “Service” item and select “Connect network disk". Further, the procedure for adding a storage is similar to the guide for Windows 7 described above. The network storage shortcut will be available through Explorer in the Network Places section.

We hope this article will be useful to you.

Sincerely, Besthosting.ua.

* You can also find out the host address by activating the “Run” menu using the “Win + R” key combination. Enter the command “ping your_domain -t” there and the system will display the IP address of the server.

Windows operating systems have a built-in interface for creating a network file storage

In order to choose the option of storing information that is convenient for you, you need to clearly understand how much data you have, what plan this data is, whether you are going to share it with the outside world or whether it will remain for individual and family use. After answering all these questions, as well as understanding the pros and cons of NAS and the cloud, you can make an informed decision. And this article will help you with this.

NAS is "network storage" that is connected to your home network and located directly at home

Similarities and differences

  • NAS is "network storage" that is connected to your home network and located directly at home.
Cloud storage is really just rented space on someone else's server. To simplify to the limit, then in this case you save your data on another computer.
  • You have direct access to your NAS hardware, which can be both a plus and a minus. The good thing is that you know exactly where the data is stored - in your home. On the other hand, you are responsible for maintenance and security, in particular, for software updates and any possible breakdowns. Of course, the risk of data loss can be mitigated with the help of duplicate drives, but if the NAS hard drive fails, the cost is on you.
  • The only thing you can do to protect your cloud storage is to choose a secure password and keep it private. Everything else is the responsibility of your ISP. Even failed hard drives will not be a problem for you, since the cloud provider must have several data backups. Most likely, you will not even notice that your hosting provider had any problems. And yet you are not completely protected from data loss: most cloud server providers cannot guarantee that information will not be lost.
  • Using a NAS makes sense if you want to store your data on your home network in such a way that you can access the same files from multiple devices. The connection and transmission speed usually depends only on the speed within the home network. Many manufacturers of NAS solutions also provide the ability to access files over the Internet. In this case, the speed depends on the characteristics of the home Internet.
  • In the cloud, data is stored outside the home network, but is usually stored in parallel on the hard drive of your home computer and synchronized in the process of changes. However, this results in higher resource consumption. In particular, this means that in the cloud there is only a backup copy of the data, which, whatever one may say, takes up space on the hard drive of the home machine. The advantages of the cloud usually include access to files via the Internet, but this is also associated with high resource consumption.
  • If you suddenly need more storage than your home NAS system provides, you can simply buy a larger hard drive. It may cost more than buying additional storage in the cloud, and in this case you will not be required to pay any other costs, except for financial ones - everything happens automatically, you do not need to go to the store.

A little about the important

  • The key difference between NAS and the cloud is this: A NAS is physical storage with hard drives connected to your network. The data is stored at your home and, therefore, the risk of it falling into the wrong hands is lower. However, cloud storage providers store data on servers whose exact location is not known. In addition, usually this data is distributed among different servers.
  • Buying a NAS system means most often a one-time expense, while storing data in the cloud is customary to introduce a monthly fee. Therefore, the question arises: which is cheaper? The lifetime of a NAS system is difficult to predict, but is typically estimated at 3-5 years. So, calculate the cost of the same capacity in the cloud for about three years and compare it with the cost of a NAS. For storing large amounts of data, it is usually more profitable to buy a NAS.
  • Choosing the right storage solution is also based on the purpose of using one or another solution: if you have a large amount of data and want to access it from several devices on the same network, then it is definitely better to purchase a NAS. Also, for streaming movies on your home network, it is better to use this storage method. However, cloud storage has the advantage that you can access and share your files from anywhere at the same speed, not limited to your home network.
  • If the security of your data is important to you, then both options are more or less reliable. When purchasing a NAS, you should pay attention to purchasing a device with at least two hard drives that can be mirrored.

Cloud storage requires a monthly or yearly payment. For small files, this is an acceptable option, but when the volume exceeds several terabytes, it becomes much more appropriate to buy your own storage. When buying, it is important to consider two parameters. This is the ratio of price and volume and price and reliability. The amount of storage can be made very large, but nobody needs low reliability. Therefore, you need to choose products from the best manufacturers. Now the most current model is Synology DS1517. This is a NAS network storage that works offline with data transfer to the Internet without connecting to a computer.

Synology DS1517 is a 5-bay compact desktop form factor storage solution. The weight of the device is 4.7 kg, which corresponds to the average system unit. In terms of dimensions, it is even more compact. The drive bays are arranged vertically. There is an opinion that the vertical position reduces the life of the hard drive, but this is not true. All professional data centers, where reliability comes first, use the vertical layout of disk storage. It provides compact dimensions and good ventilation.

Specifications

  • 5 drive bays for 3.5 and 2.5 drives (with adapter).
  • Processor 4 cores at 1.7 GHz.
  • RAM - 2 GB DDDR3.
  • Round the clock operation.
  • Hot-swappable drives, sliding through the front panel.
  • Chassis ventilation with two fans (flow circuit borrowed from professional servers).
  • Built-in power supply (it is strongly recommended to power the storage through the UPS).

Interfaces

  • eSATA 2 ports;
  • 4 Ethernet ports each at 1 Gbps.
  • USB-3 two ports.

Ports provide data transfer up to 5 Gb / s or 485 Mb / s. The length of Ethernet cables can reach up to 250 meters, which is important for connecting video cameras.

Synology DS1517 Features

The modern requires the highest possible reliability of data storage. This is backed up. Synology DS1517 backs up ("backup") according to user settings. Usually, a scheme is used where data is copied from a disk of one compartment to another. At the same time, the capacity of the recorded data is up to 50% of the total storage capacity. With a volume of several terabytes, this is easy to provide.

One of the key features of the Synology DS1517 storage NAS is the video server function. Home or country video surveillance is the most common use of network storage. Manufacturers took this moment into account and made all the functions of the video server built-in. Up to 30 cameras can be connected to the 4-socket LAN port via a splitter. It does not require any additional equipment. One Ethernet port is left free for the Internet connection. You can view the recorded data from any computer connected to the Internet. Access protection is password protected and user configurable.

Western Digital has been pushing the idea of private, self-made clouds for some time now, so we won't be at the mercy of the whims of large corporations. WD My Cloud Home Duo is the company's next step in this direction, and quite a success.

Is WD My Cloud Home Duo a NAS?

Don't call it NAS! Told me by a WD rep who talked about the product. My Cloud Home Duo might be a "private home cloud" but it's not a NAS device. Why is WD so keen not to bundle My Cloud Home with competitive products?

The answer to this question lies in the ease of maintenance. Whether you're using Synology, D-Link, Qnap, or some other hardware, setting it up is often a big hassle. Making your Western Digital gadget work is as convenient as using Dropbox, OneDrive, Cloud Mail - without long and tedious reading of help files and clicks on configuration panels.

My cloud gadget is so simple that it doesn't even have a visible power button. According to WD, the cloud does not turn off, so this button is not needed here. If you want to turn it off, you can do it using the application or the connection on the back of the equipment.

In fact, everything is simple

What do I need to do to get WD My Cloud Home up and running? Connect it to the power cable and Ethernet, visit the site with a short Internet address, enter the activation code attached to the device, and that's it.

I don't even know when my My Cloud Home Duo installed the latest firmware and set up services. After all, he was ready to work within a few tens of seconds after entering the activation code.

Design and what's inside

This device from Western Digital looks beautiful. NAS are mostly hidden somewhere in cabinets or attics because they usually look like simple plastic boxes. The WD My Cloud Home Duo, meanwhile, is beautiful hardware. Appearance is a matter of taste, but even people of different tastes will admit that a WD gadget at least looks like it doesn't need to be hidden out of sight.

The Western Digital Dual Cloud Home Duo I reviewed arrived with two 2TB WD hard drives on board. By default, the hardware operates in RAID 1 mode, but you can double the available capacity by reducing the degree of data protection by easily switching to JBOD mode. You can also use the gadget as a mass storage device via USB 3.0 ports.

WD has done everything to make My Cloud Home Duo work like a cloud

The WD My Cloud Home Duo gadget can automatically sync the specified folders on our computer and create copies in its memory. It can also store data that will not be synchronized with devices, but will be accessed remotely. It can also function as a network drive treated as a native drive by the desktop system.

A similar situation is also provided for mobile devices. The WD app - if you install it on Android or iOS, it will sync your data permanently and send it to My Cloud. We will also be able to manage the data that is shared, such as setting that camera images should be sent not only to Google Photos or OneDrive, but also to our private cloud.

Interestingly, My Cloud Home Duo can function as a mirror to our public cloud. Upon request, the device will sync with Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Facebook or Google Photos, creating mirror copies of what we store in those clouds.

Just like cloud services, in WD My Cloud Home Duo we can easily share files or folders with our friends to work together on the same data.

In fact, the only service here that has more to do with NAS than clouds is Plex. It turns the hardware into a popular media server that has client applications for probably every operating system available and for every device. Our videos stored in memory can be conveniently played back on a TV or projector. In the case of mobile devices, we will also be able to play movies using the WD app.

One major flaw that needs improvement

WD My Cloud Home Duo is usually fast and efficient. Copying many small files does not load the processor when large ones are sent as fast as our home router allows. Provided that we are using a web application or network drive mapping interface. The hardware also transcodes video quickly, even in 4K, and is very quiet. Web applications or mobile applications are very light, intuitive, fast, and have an exemplary design. Except one.

To help us, WD has added the WD Discovery app to the device. And it doesn't always work. Its main task is to deeply integrate the device with the system file manager. Thanks to this, My Cloud Home Duo is indistinguishable from a local hard drive for your operating system. On my main Windows 10 laptop, this app just didn't want to install. I click on install and nothing happens.

Without bothering, I installed it on an older Windows 10 laptop. The app installed itself, but the file copy speed slowed to an inexplicable and unacceptable level. In addition, after installing the software and during the installation itself, Windows repeatedly asks if I really want to install this program when the Explorer.exe process is restarted many times. Alas, I did not check its work on macOS, I hope everything is in order there.

Why do I need Western Digital My Cloud Home Duo when I have the cloud online?

This, unfortunately, is a very good question. What's more, WD can't provide a practical, meaningful answer either. "Your data belongs to you" is true, but I don't feel discomfort from my service provider. This is a good argument for people who have very, very personal files that are not readable even by the service provider's automated scripts. But there are other reasons as well.

"Clouds are capricious in their work, and often fail" - this is also true. Very rarely, but it happens that Dropbox or OneDrive is not available for 2-3 hours because the service provider has problems. However, I'm not sure if my ISP's problems don't balance these rare outages. In addition, my data is scattered across Internet processing centers, so if one fails, the rest is still pretty safe.

However, I can highlight two advantages

First, if we are on the same local network as My Cloud Home, data transfer is much faster for obvious reasons, this leads to greater convenience. The second argument is cost.

Western Digital My Cloud Home systems are available in numerous storage configurations. Models with one or two slots come with hard drives from 2 to 8 TB each. The version I tested was with two two-terabyte disks - these are one-time expenses of about 25 thousand rubles. For comparison, a terabyte in Cloud Mail costs 7 thousand rubles. in year. Therefore, in two years, 4 TB will cost you at least 4 thousand rubles more.

Outcome

WD My Cloud Home Duo is not really a NAS. It is primitive, although it works without problems, immediately, and does not require any technical knowledge to set it up. Everything functions quietly, quickly and relatively cheaply.

Is it a competitor for Synology or Qnap devices? Not really. However, this is a great deal for those considering buying a few terabytes of cloud from Microsoft, Google, or another service provider. Fast access to data from home is a big advantage, and if we can get it cheaper and have full control, then such a gadget becomes even more interesting.

Therefore, I highly recommend the cloud from WD. No, not NAS. There is no need to install an FTP server or DLNA server here. It's the same cloud as Cloud Mail, OneDrive or Google Drive, only cheaper, faster and with full control over our data.

WD My Cloud Home - video trailer

If you find an error, the video does not work, please select a piece of text and click Ctrl+Enter.

To work with it, you can use both the UI and the command line. After installation, the system reports all the parameters for working with the cloud. If you forgot something just ssh into the Frontend machine and you will get a reminder like this:

$ ssh "s password: Last login: Wed Oct 30 14:45:12 2013 from 192.168.1.183 User Console URL (for managing instances, volumes, etc.): https://192.168.10.1:8888/ User Credentials: * Account: demo * Username: admin * Password: password Admin Console URL (for managing user accounts, VM types, etc.): https://192.168.10.1:8443 Admin Credentials: * Account: eucalyptus * Username: admin * Password: admin

To work through the UI, go to the address above https://192.168.10.1:8888/

Enter your data for the demo user and you can start working. By default, the system already has one image based on CentOS 6.4 and several keys have been created. So you can immediately start the virtual machine.

To work with the command line, ssh into the Frontend machine. And load the environment variables for one of the two default users. For example:

After that, you can start using the command line to work with the system. For example, display all system resources available to run virtual machines:

My NC machine has a 4 core processor and a 128 GB disk. By default, after installation, I could run up to 4 virtual machines. But as you can see, the system offers to run up to 8 virtual machines. To achieve this, ssh into the NC machine and edit a few variables in the /etc/eucalyptus/eucalyptus.conf file. I put:
MAX_CORES="8" NC_WORK_SIZE=70000
After that, I need to restart the NC process /etc/init.d/eucalyptus-nc restart and I had twice as many resources at my disposal. I wouldn't abuse it with changing the number of processors, but I think it's safe to double them if the virtual machines do not use 100% of their processor capacities.

If you are more accustomed to using the Russian-language interface in the UI, then you can change the language settings of the UI. To do this, ssh into the Frontend machine and edit the /etc/eucalyptus-console/console.ini file. It is necessary to change the locale language = ru_RU
After that, restart the eucalyptus-console process /etc/init.d/eucalyptus-console restart

Going back to the UI, you will see that the menu and many messages have been translated into Russian.

I spent less than an hour on the entire installation of two machines and configuration.

It's convenient, no doubt about it. By storing data in the clouds, we get more freedom, become independent of a specific computer, tablet or smartphone, we can access information from different devices without being tied to a specific place and gadget - files are available via the Internet from anywhere in the world. Where it is, of course, this very Internet.

And everything would be fine, but there are some inconveniences in these services. One of them is space limitation. After all, cloud providers provide a small free amount of storage of several gigabytes, and everything above is provided for a limited time with the need to systematically pay for an extension of the period of use. The second disadvantage is that the rights and obligations of the parties in this interaction are little regulated. Consumers have to agree to use the service on the terms of the cloud provider, risking both the safety of files and possible data leakage. There is another limitation, a very significant one. When storing files in cloud services, access to files is possible only if there is an Internet connection, and if there is no Internet, then there is no access to files.

These shortcomings are addressed with WD's on-premise My Cloud. The device allows you to settle a personal cloud at home and no longer depend on the shortcomings of public clouds, using only their advantages if necessary.

The device is a small block about 170×140×50 mm in size - about the size of a book, weighs about a kilogram and looks quite stylish. Includes My Cloud drive, power supply, Ethernet cable, warranty document, and getting started booklet. True, the power supply has a three-terminal connector, and it took the purchase of an adapter to connect.

The storage capacity is 2 TB, which is more than enough for me, my family and a couple of friends to whom I provided access to the cloud. The device is compatible with PC and macOS operating systems.

The front panel has an LED indicator that informs about the current operating mode. On the rear panel are: USB 3.0 port, Ethernet port, AC power socket, Kensington lock and Reset button.

It is connected elementarily: we turn on the power supply, and connect the network cable to the Wi Fi router. Works completely silently.

After connecting, the device automatically receives an address from the router, visible under the name wdmycloud, and the data is available over the local network immediately without any settings. The huge advantage of this storage is that you will get access to your files from home even when there is no Internet.

To fully use the functions of the device and access the settings, you need to register and create an account on the service website. The process is simple - you just need to enter your first name, last name and e-mail address, open the sent link to confirm your e-mail address and come up with a password, which must include uppercase, lowercase letters and numbers.

Installing programs to control the device does not present any particular difficulties, support is conducted in Russian. At the first start, the application will automatically detect the drive on the network and offer to set up an account. Although in fairness it should be noted that I fiddled with the settings for a long time, I met with various small obstacles related to the features of my computer. However, now I can’t even remember what the problems were with, because. managed to solve them all without the involvement of outside help. It is especially worth noting that for the operation of the device, the Java plug-in must be installed on the computer. He also had to deal with it. But overall, the process went well. I will not describe all the menu items of the working panel, everything is logical and intuitive there. And for those who have difficulties, there is an excellent user manual in Russian.

After installing and configuring the device, I registered access to family members - my husband and sons. My children are already adults and live far away from us with their families. They set up their computers and tablets by downloading the free My Cloud app. To access data, you can use all popular versions of browsers, including FireFox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari.

We love to share photos, recommend each other favorite films, books. Access to such shared storage is exceptionally convenient. The files that we share with each other are uploaded to a public folder, in the sections "Library", "Photo", "Music", "Video". Each of us uploads personal files to our personal folder.

There are several ways to work with uploading files to the cloud. I like the quick way to work through the Run window. We call the window by pressing the Windows + R keys, enter the “\\WDMyCloud” command there and get an interface for any manipulations with files.

You can connect to the cloud via Wi-Fi and watch information on your smartphone, tablet and even a TV with Smart TV. With the My Cloud application installed on tablets and smartphones, access to the storage via the Internet is available at any time from anywhere. The application allows you to download or watch any files from your mobile device, as well as synchronize them with popular file storages such as Dropbox and Google Drive.

The device can also be used to back up content or archive data - all or selected categories of files. I have not yet used this opportunity, but I think that in time I will get to it. More advanced users and IT professionals will find other ways to use this device. I'm fine with what I've described.

So, let's sum up. Personal cloud My Cloud is a simple and practical solution to the problems of storing large amounts of information with the ability to manage access. It is easy to master, works silently, allows you to download and read files from it from anywhere in the world.

The device costs according to Yandex Market from 9900 to 11690 rubles. Expensive? And let's see the rate of the same Dropbox. You will pay $9.99 monthly for 1TB storage, or $99 annually. By simple calculations, we see that the home cloud will pay off in less than 2 years. At the same time, the storage capacity is doubled.

The home cloud will be a great helper for people who have a lot of photos and movies; who work on the road and need to have access to documents and files from different places or just like to travel and quickly upload photos from their mobile devices to home storage.

To complete the picture, I asked a colleague who has been actively using it for quite a long time about the impressions of using such a device. The answer was short - "very convenient." After reading the reviews on forums and markets, I was not disappointed, there were almost no negative ones. True, several times I met complaints about the low download speed. But I haven’t noticed it myself yet, everything works quickly for me. I really like my cloud. I can honestly recommend.

I'll start with two announcements. First: God knows, I held out to the last, but life is a harsh thing, so she broke off even such a strong ambition as hostility to Zuckerberg :)
