The impedance of the headphones affects what. How to choose headphones or headset for computer and mobile devices

2018 was marked by the appearance on the market of models with a new digital audio technology for high-quality sound transmission - "aptX". Of course, before the advent of "aptX" the sound was also good, then this technology is a huge step forward compared to the devices of the past.

Another improvement - in 2018, the autonomous operation of a full-size device became the norm - 20 hours or more. For vacuum wireless "Bluetooth" earbuds, this figure is eight or more hours.

Wireless technologies used to transfer data between a PC and a wireless device

Data transfer between wireless headphones and a personal computer can be carried out using three technologies:

  • "Bluetooth"- the most widespread data transmission technology;
  • radio channel 2,4 GHz- experts say that this technology is capable of transmitting better sound quality. Moreover, the range of the radio channel is 100 m, which is much larger than the “Bluetooth” range. One of these technologies is "DECT", which operates at a frequency of 1880-1900 MHz;
  • IR sensor- the technology showed itself very well during the transfer music files... The sound is soft, flowing, without distortion. However, there is one drawback - the range. Devices must be within line of sight to ensure normal transmission.

Wireless headphones for computer "Bluetooth" and "DECT"

The problem of "Bluetooth" technology is its vulnerability. For a long time there have been softwares that allow not only intercepting information passing through this channel, but even introducing your own. Of course, this may not happen on all devices, but only on those who have not changed the factory password settings.

Dekt technology is free from such risks. Each module has its own unique code encoding, which means that neither interception, nor, moreover, the introduction of "left" information is not afraid of him.

Proprietary Wireless Technology Standards

Many manufacturers use independently developed standards to reduce the cost of the final product. wireless technologies... They are most often used for listening to music (naturally, in stereo) and are characterized by very good sound quality. The only disadvantage of these standards in comparison with the "Dekt" technology is the smaller range of 10-20 m.

The most important characteristics of wireless headphones for computer: what to look for

Choosing a similar device is worth paying Special attention on some parameters, namely:

  • sound quality, support for the Aptx codec;
  • ease of management, duration of operation on one battery charge;
  • ease of use, estimated service life.

First, let's figure out what kind of codec called Aptx is.

Sound quality of wireless headphones for computer, support for Aptx codec

The Aptx codec is used to compress and decompress music files, allowing high-quality sound to be transmitted via Bluetooth. However, the quality depends not only on the specified codec. An important role in organizing good sound from headphones for a computer is played by its presence not only on the receiving, but also on the transmitting device. In addition, the headphones must be able to accept a high quality format. That is why, if on store shelves you meet cheap headphones poor quality, and the box will say "Aptx", do not rely on quality sound. It's not that the seller is misleading you (the codec may well be installed). The problem is in the device itself: it will be unable to play the audio file as dictated by Aptx.

Ease of management and operating time of the wireless headset for PC on a single battery charge

Very important indicators. Ease of operation and convenient location of command buttons is a guarantee that you will not be disappointed in your choice. Some manufacturers (mainly China) do not think how important this is. For example, you are playing on the network, a situation arises when you need to listen. Will you be up to looking for command buttons on the body of the "ears"? Agree, it is much better when the controls are at hand. Of course, you can get used to everything, but before buying, ask yourself the question - do I need it? Why adapt to a purchase when you can purchase a customized device?

Time autonomous work- another the most important factor... Why buy a device that lasts only 3-4 hours on a single charge, when you can choose a headset for a computer that can work for 18-20 hours without interruption? Draw your own conclusions, ladies and gentlemen.

Ease of use and long service life

The operation of the wireless device should be comfortable. If you use a headset for 20-30 minutes a day, this parameter is not essential for you. But many do not part with such a device all day, night, or even days. They are either avid music lovers or gamers. For these categories, operating comfort comes first.

HELPFUL INFORMATION!

If you spent more than three hours in the headphones and did not feel any discomfort, then the model is perfect for you.

The durability of the devices is quite simple to determine. We refrain from buying devices made of obviously cheap, low-quality plastic with backlash in the joints. Another good way to do this is to grab the speakers and spread / pull them apart. If you hear a creak or feel that there is some kind of backlash, refrain from buying.

How to choose wireless headphones for your computer: editorial tips website

Choosing computer wireless headphones, decide for yourself for what purpose it will be used. If only for listening to music, you can find inexpensive model without a microphone. For conversations on the network, you should also not overestimate the bar of performance requirements so as not to overpay for unnecessary parameters... But gamers for games should be more careful in their choice. The impedance (impedance) of the speakers should be ≤32 ohms and the sensitivity should be ≤100dB.

HELPFUL INFORMATION!

When purchasing such a device for a PC, you should not pay attention only to famous brands. It is clear that there is more confidence in them, but there is a double-edged sword. For this trust, you will have to pay a decent amount, which may seem overwhelming to someone. Good gaming headphones with a microphone for a computer can be cheap, and at the same time of high quality, and their characteristics are sometimes even better than those of popular brands.

Let's figure out the main parameters for the areas of application of wireless headphones for a personal computer.

Computer wireless headsets for networking: features

For communication on the network, headphones can be of two types: mono-devices (bracket or ear hook with one speaker) or classic (stereo for 2 speakers). The first option is a little cheaper, however, many users note that it is more convenient. When using a mono device, a person does not turn off from everyday life. Talking on the network, he perfectly hears not only the interlocutor, but also everything that is happening around. Stereo headset in this regard, it slightly mutes what is happening around, although sometimes this has its advantages - you can escape from everyday life and completely devote yourself to a conversation, for example, with a classmate whom you have not seen for 20-25 years.

Wireless devices for communicating over the network are quite diverse.

Wireless headphones for PC: choose the right one, enjoy high-quality sound

Headphones for listening to music on a personal computer have one rather important difference from devices for games or communication - the absence of a microphone. Their focus is high-quality, rich sound. If the choice is made correctly and all the necessary characteristics are taken into account, you can catch the sound of each instrument in the audio file you are listening to. This is very important for musicians who lay out the composition on the instrument parts. However, ordinary music lovers, far from notes and scores, will also appreciate the volume, the beauty of the sound of the compositions of their favorite bands.

According to the characteristics, it is worth paying attention to the sensitivity of the device's speakers. The higher it is, the better. It is not worth purchasing headphones with an indicator below 90 dB - in this case, you simply will not hear the quality. The optimal frequencies that the device is capable of producing are the range from 16 Hz to 20,000 Hz. The minimum impedance of such devices is 16 ohms.

Gaming Wireless Headphones with Microphone for Computer: Parameter Features

Such devices are practically similar in terms of the minimum required characteristics to the previous version (with small deviations): frequency - 20-20000 Hz, impedance (resistance) - 32 Ohm (versus 16), sensitivity - ≤100 dB. However, there is one more need for them - a high-quality microphone capable of picking up even a whisper. When purchasing such equipment, ask your sales assistant to create an opportunity to check not only the speakers, but also the microphone. In big stores consumer electronics there is such an opportunity.

Wireless headphones for a computer: the best models according to the editorial site

It is rather difficult to understand the huge assortment of similar products presented on Russian counters. That is why the editors of the site decided to provide for review several of the best headphones for a computer of various types (with and without a microphone), with prices and user reviews.

At what price can you buy wireless headphones for a computer with a microphone: gaming model of the device

Such equipment has a higher cost compared to other types. However, experienced gamers are not advised to save on gaming headphones... After all, the main thing is high-quality sound and the convenience of continuous use, sometimes for 10-15 hours in a row. One such model is the Logitech G G933 Artemis Spectrum. The advantage of the model is the possibility of wired connection when the battery is discharged.

Connecting wireless devices to a personal computer

Frequently Asked Question -? Most often, modern ones are already equipped with a Bluetooth or radio communication module. All manipulations related to the connection boil down to the fact that you need to connect the module via USB or 3.5 mm jack to the system unit of a personal computer or laptop, turn on headphones or a headset, and you can enjoy sound, communication or games (of course, after charging the battery battery).

The PC does not see the connected device - what to do

Most often, the problem lies in the user's carelessness. If the connection is made through the Jack-plug, make sure that the colors are connected correctly. Here, the red (microphone) and green (sound) of the plug and the corresponding color of the jack will be used. If additionally there is USB plug, it also needs to be connected. Check that the plugs are fully seated in the jacks.

Another ridiculous mistake some users make is a flat battery. The newly purchased device must be put on charge immediately, no matter what charge the indicator shows. If these tips did not help, check the device on another device, then it will immediately become clear whether it is working properly or not.

Let's sum up

For the uninitiated user, the choice of headphones or a headset causes some difficulties. And it is not surprising, because this at first glance a simple device has many designs, characteristics and even more manufacturers.

But we will not let you get lost in this variety and in this article we will tell you everything you need to know when choosing headphones or a headset for your computer, mobile devices and help you make the right choice.

Headsets for games

Some of the most popular gaming headsets today are HyperX and the value-for-money Cloud Core.

These lightweight and durable headsets have a bass sound tailor-made for gaming, but they are also quite enjoyable to listen to music and watch movies.

Digital headsets

If your PC has a cheap motherboard with a budget audio codec (most don't game models), then it is advisable to take a digital headset with a USB connector, the sound quality of which will not depend on the sound card of the computer.

One of best options there will be SteelSeries headsets that give very clear sound with light transparent bass and have a very sensitive noise canceling microphone. Even the inexpensive 5H v2 USB model is enough.

Headsets for communication

Some of the best headsets for Skype and other chatting are Plantronics. I recommend the Audio 355/655 (USB), GameCom 318/388 models.
Plantronics GameCom 318 headphones

These lightweight headsets have an excellent noise-canceling microphone and surprisingly good bass sound for comfortable gaming and music listening.

Universal headsets

The universal headset can be used for any task - music, games, movies, with a computer and mobile devices. Everywhere they show themselves quite well.

One of the best options would be headsets from Sony, which have excellent balanced sound, good quality bass and compactness. I can recommend the MDR-ZX660AP and MDR-XB950AP models.
Headphones Sony MDR-ZX660AP

But there are many more successful wired and wireless models out there.

Music headsets

For game lovers who also appreciate good music, we can recommend Sennheiser's gaming headsets. For example, the inexpensive GSP 300.

All that was listed above is one of the most optimal headsets for today in terms of price / quality ratio, but of course there are many other successful models.

If you want to understand everything technical nuances the choice of headphones or a headset, to understand why I recommend these particular models or to find something of your own, then read the article further.

2. Purpose

Headphones can be divided into the following types by purpose:

  • for communication
  • for music
  • for games
  • for mobile devices
  • universal
  • monitor

Now I will describe them in a little more detail.

For communication- usually a lightweight headset with a microphone for Skype communication, where there are no high requirements for sound quality, but there must be a good microphone. A high-quality headset for communication is not expensive ($ 20-30).

For music- headphones with the most high-quality sound over the entire frequency range. High frequencies should not be cut off, there should be no dips in the mids, and the bass should be transparent, soft and pleasant, and not explosive or booming. Such headphones must be soft, comfortable, provide comfortable use for a long time, and cannot be cheap (from $ 100). In this case, the presence of a microphone in them is not a priority.

For games- headphones or headset, which also have high demands in terms of convenience, but do not require natural sounding. The main thing is that they help navigate the game by sound, do not eat up small details and have muted bass that does not hit the ears. All of this is taken into account when designing gaming headsets. They also need to be strong enough, as they are used quite actively. The presence of a microphone with good noise reduction and the shutdown function is the recommended condition for online team games. The cost of a gaming headset should be average between a simple headset for communication and high-quality music-loving headphones ($ 50-100).

For mobile devices- often the main requirement for such headphones is lightness, compactness, foldable design and a carrying case. It is convenient if it is a headset with a microphone so that you can receive calls. It's also good if it's wireless and has a long battery life. Of course, if such a headset is of high quality and provides good sound, then it will cost decently (about $ 100).

Universal- headphones or headset that can be used for a computer and mobile devices in most tasks - communication, music, video, games. In general, for undemanding and economical users who need a little bit of everything. These headphones do not have high requirements in terms of sound quality, since they cannot provide perfect sound in completely different scenarios. However, this may be enough for most users, and you don't have to buy several separate earbuds for different purposes. These headphones can have a microphone, cable, wireless and built-in battery. At the same time, their cost can be very democratic ($ 30-60), but they are unlikely to belong to an eminent brand.

Monitor- professional headphones that reproduce sound without distortion and enhancements. They are used mainly by musicians in studios and are expensive (from $ 100). Such headphones usually do not have a microphone, are equipped with special connectors or adapters for connecting to studio equipment, and may have increased impedance. Regular users are unlikely to appreciate them, since the sound in them does not seem to be bright enough.

3. Headphones or headset

Some users are faced with the choice of what to buy - headphones or a headset. Many people believe that they do not need a microphone in principle and are unlikely to need it.

Nevertheless, it is better to purchase a more functional device - a headset with a microphone. If you don't need a microphone now, you may need it badly tomorrow, when your webcam breaks down or you need to make a late Skype call. Or maybe someone you know will drag you to online game and you will be out of touch.

In any case, it is better to have a microphone, even if it is removable, if you do not plan to use it yet or think that it will interfere with you. For a headset that you will carry with a smartphone, it is better to have a built-in microphone.

4. Headband

I decided to start with the design of the headphones from top to bottom, and then I'll talk about the technical characteristics, other nuances and manufacturers.

The headband is the headband that holds the speaker cups and is used as a support to carry the weight of the headphones onto the head. It can be of different designs and sizes, which greatly affects the comfort and durability of the headphones.

4.1. Headband design

The following headband options can be distinguished:

  • plastic bow
  • plastic with shock absorber
  • neckband
  • suspended structure
  • metal rim
  • foldable design

Plastic shackle- the simplest version of the headband, characterized by low strength and low usability. Thin plastic breaks down quickly, thick plastic lasts longer, but in any case it puts unpleasant pressure on the back of the head, especially if you don't have a lot of hair there.

Plastic with shock absorber- solves the problem of convenience, but does not add reliability and durability to the structure.

- usually made of plastic and besides the unusual use it transfers all the load on the ears, from which after an hour or two of use they begin to hurt.

- can be found in models with both a plastic and a more reliable metal bow. The pluses include the softness of the mount, but on a small head it can sag too much and it is difficult to adjust, especially in heavy models, where the load falls on the ears.

- the highest quality and most reliable type of headband. The plate can be placed on top, or it can be all sheathed with soft leather. Well, if all the mounts, up to the cups, are made of metal, this design will be practically unkillable.

- exists in many variations, the main thing is that it is strong enough, i.e. made of metal or very thick plastic with no visible weak points.

4.2. Headband size

The size of the headband also plays an important role, i.e. how much it can stretch in width and move apart in length.

Of course, for a wide head, you cannot take narrow headphones, as they will put strong pressure on the ears or the space around the ears, which is uncomfortable and the ears quickly begin to hurt. In addition, the plastic headband may not withstand constant stress, especially when putting on / taking off the headphones, and will quickly break. With a narrow head, the situation is the opposite - wide headphones will dangle on it, which is also not very convenient, although not always critical.

The length of the head must also be taken into account, since some headphones may not move apart to the desired height and the cups will be higher than a comfortable level (they will press down on the earlobes). With a small round head, the opposite situation may occur, even with the fully retracted mount, the earcups will be too low and the headphones instead of the rim will hang on the ears, causing discomfort and pain from fatigue.

Although most headphones are designed for different head sizes and are reasonably adjustable, this should be taken into account, as there are exceptions in both head sizes and headphones.

Whether the size of the headphones suits you and whether you feel comfortable in them, of course, it is better to try them live in the store. But if this is not possible, then you can roughly navigate the proportions and sizes of the headphones (wide or narrow), taking into account your anatomical features.

5. Cups

The ear cups contain the headphone speakers and are usually made of plastic, which rarely affects durability.

5.1. Cups design

By design, the cups can be divided into:

  • motionless
  • movable

Stationary- are rigidly connected to the headband and do not turn left-right, up-down, which is used in cheap headphones and is usually not critical, but sometimes it is inconvenient.

Movable- in good headphones, the cups should rotate at least a little in several planes, this is usually enough to comfortably fit the ears.

5.2. Cups material

One type of plastic is usually used with the material of the cups:

  • matt
  • glossy
  • soft touch

Matte plastic- the simplest and, in my opinion, the best solution in the quality of the cup material, since it is not easily soiled and does not require special care.

Glossy plastic- not the best solution, although at first it glitters beautifully, but collects prints, dust, scratches and requires frequent neat cleaning.

Soft-touch plastic- I don't know who and why came up with the idea of making cups from a material that is pleasant to the touch, but collects greasy prints, it's still not a mouse. In any case, it is better than gloss, but worse than ordinary matte plastic, the soft-touch needs to be cleaned more often and it is more difficult.

In general, I would advise you not to dwell on the material of the cups and take this into account as a last resort when choosing very similar models.

5.3. Acoustic design

But the acoustic design should be paid more serious attention, since this already concerns the sound quality and the comfort of using the headphones. In general, this primarily relates to the work of the speakers, and soundproofing is a side effect, although it is also an important effect.

By the type of acoustic design, cups are:

  • closed
  • open
  • half-open

Closed cups- create a closed space, which prevents the membranes from vibrating, since there is no inflow and outflow of air inside the cups (in front of and behind the speaker membrane). This distorts the sound a little, but it can make it more bass, which some people like. But the most important thing is that this design provides high sound insulation, and is better suited for those who like to enjoy music in silence, without hearing external sounds (for example, in the subway). Also, sound insulation acts in the opposite direction, without interfering with rest or work for those who are nearby, especially at night.

Open cups- here everything is exactly the opposite. The ear cups have holes through which air flows freely, allowing the speaker membrane to oscillate more freely without distorting the sound. This is suitable for those who are very picky about the sound quality, i.e. music lovers. In addition, in such a design, you will hear everything that is happening around and others will hear what is in your headphones. Personally, I love to hear what is happening around me when someone calls or addresses me. On the other hand, I never turn up the volume and do not disturb anyone.

Half open cups Is something in between. On the one side special holes usually not visible, there may be narrow gaps somewhere. This has little effect on the sound and it is unlikely that those who are not gifted with an ear for music will notice the difference with the closed or open type. Sound insulation is moderate, external sounds do not break through much, and music from the headphones comes out even less. Personally, I also like this option, perhaps even slightly better than with fully open cups. A quiet TV does not interfere with enjoying the game, and if the spouse says something, then I will hear.

In general, do not bother too much with the choice of the type of cups in terms of sound quality. Be guided by your preference in terms of soundproofing and the environment in which you will use the headphones.

6. Ear pads

Ear cushions are soft pads on the ear cups and come in a variety of designs, sizes and materials, which greatly affects comfort and sound.

6.1. Design

According to the design of ear pads, headphones are:

  • full-size
  • waybills
  • vacuum
  • liners

Fullsize- fits the ear completely, providing high comfort during prolonged use of the headphones.

Overhead- put on the ears on top, creating some pressure on them, which is quite acceptable for short-term use within 1-2 hours, but is fraught with pain in the ears with prolonged use.

Vacuum- do not belong to computers and are used mainly with mobile devices, although they can be used with a laptop. Vacuum headphones are inserted deep into the ear canal using small rubber ear cushions, for which they are also called duct or earplugs. They usually cannot provide the same sound quality and deep bass as full-size headphones, with the exception of some successful models (such as AKG). If you listen to music not loudly, then the ears do not hurt from them, but for some, such headphones do not stick in their ears and fall out all the time, so you need to select it individually or take a model with an additional attachment to the ear. Vacuum earmuffs provide superior sound insulation.

- headphones that are not inserted into the ear canal, but inserted into the auricle, therefore, are called earbuds. They can have foam ear cushions, rubberized edges, or just plastic. Unlike vacuum ones, the sound in them is not so saturated, there is practically no bass. But personally, for example, I really like the earbuds from HTC smartphones, they are comfortable and the sound is pleasant, in the ears they hold well and do not cause discomfort. In addition, through the earbuds you can perfectly hear what is happening around, you will not be pushed by people who turn to public transport passengers and you will not fall under the car without hearing how it pulls up. But not all earbuds fit equally well in different ears, some fall out or press and after 1-2 hours the ears begin to hurt.

When it comes to computer headphones and headsets, I personally prefer full-size headphones with large ear pads.

6.2. Shape and size of ear cushions

Although earbuds may be claimed to be oversized, the shape and size of the ear cushions can vary greatly from model to model. This is worth paying close attention to.

The shape of the ear pads can be:

  • oval
  • round
  • rectangular

Oval- have the most natural shape, following the shape of the ear and ideally fitting it.

Round- since they do not repeat exactly the contours of the ear, they should be larger than oval.

Rectangular- closer to oval than round and can be quite comfortable to fit ears with the same size.

It is better to choose headphones with larger ear pads and with a thinner edge, so that they probably completely encircle the ears and do not even slightly press them down anywhere. For example, slight constant pressure on the earlobe will cause ear pain after a few hours, and after 3-4 hours you will have a headache. Let me remind you that the entire weight of the headphones should rest on the headband, and the ear pads should only slightly rest on the head around the ears.

6.3. Ear cushions material

The material of the ear cushions is mainly used:

  • leatherette
  • the cloth
  • velours
  • foam rubber

Leather- the best material in terms of quality and durability, but headphones with genuine leather are very expensive, mostly music lovers.

Leatherette- not inferior to natural leather in ease of use. Now they make ear pads from very soft and pleasant leatherette. However, its durability in inexpensive headphones leaves much to be desired, this is another reason not to save a lot. Especially quickly leatherette is erased in men with stiff bristles in the sideburn area. The features of the sound of headphones with leatherette ear cushions include juicy sound and powerful bass, compared to ear cushions made of other materials.

Fabric, velor- some music lovers prefer ear pads made of this material, since it does not reflect sound waves like leatherette, but rather absorbs them somewhat without introducing distortion and making the sound more natural. However, the sound becomes less mellow and bassier, so I prefer leatherette ear pads. As for the comfort of use, I can't say which is better. On the one hand, the fabric breathes and the ears do not sweat so much, on the other hand it can be hot with it in a warm room. Probably wears out over time as well as leatherette. In terms of care, it is possibly a little worse, it gets dirty more easily and the ear pads need to be removed for washing, while the leatherette ear pads can be wiped with a damp microfiber without removing. In general, my choice is leatherette.

Foam rubber- the cheapest and quickly wearing out material, used mainly in the most inexpensive overhead communication headsets. This may be justified for reasons of austerity or if you want very light and open headphones through which everything is heard in general. But low wear resistance imposes its own restrictions on the frequency of use of such headphones, neither they nor the foam rubber will last long. Personally, I would not recommend such solutions at all.

It is also worth considering that ear cushions made of leather and leatherette have greater sound insulation than fabric and foam rubber. Velor provides medium sound insulation.

7. Connection interface

The connection interface is a combination of connector and data transmission technology.

All headphones and headsets are divided into:

  • analog
  • digital
  • wireless

Analog headphones- are connected with a cable with an audio jack, for a computer and mobile devices it is a 3.5 mm mini-jack. If there is a microphone, there will also be a separate mini-jack for it. The sound quality in such headphones is highly dependent on the sound card or audio codec. Integrated audio codecs on cheap motherboards may not produce enough sound to unleash the full sound potential of a good headphone. High-quality discrete sound cards and audio codecs with headphone amplifiers on gaming motherboards are able to provide better audio quality.

Digital headphones- have a built-in sound card and are connected using a USB connector. Across USB interface sound is transmitted to digital form without distortion. Therefore, digital headphones on any computer sound as the manufacturer intended. In addition, no second connector is required for the microphone. This is a great solution for users with a not-so-good sound card. The disadvantages include the lack of connectivity to mobile devices. Also, the USB ports of the computer should work well, otherwise the connection may fall off (as it happens with flash drives), but this happens rarely and is solved by installing working USB controller.

Wireless headphones- also have a built-in sound card and receive a signal in digital form, but using a radio channel or Bluetooth. Headphones operating on their own radio channel have a USB transmitter in the kit that connects to a computer and may not be able to connect to mobile devices. Bluetooth headphones or headsets often do not come with a receiver and must be purchased separately (if your PC does not have such an adapter). Most laptops and mobile devices have a Bluetooth adapter and these headphones can be connected directly to them. Bluetooth has different versions 2.0-5.0. It is desirable that the headphones have the most modern version Bluetooth (4.0,4.1,4.2,5.0) - the higher the better. The range of the most common versions 4.0-4.2 today is 7-10 m in line of sight, 3-5 m through the walls.

In general, the best and most reliable option is a USB connection, then a 3.5 mm mini-jack and the least reliable is a wireless connection, since the signal can be lost and interrupted by routers, wireless mice and other devices.

8. Headphone characteristics

The main characteristics of the headphones are:

  • resistance (for analog)
  • frequency range (for all)
  • autonomy (for wireless)

Resistance- or impedance is the first parameter that you should pay attention to when choosing headphones with a 3.5 mm jack. The standard value for which sound cards are designed is 32 ohms. If the headphones have this value higher (64 Ohm), then a weak integrated sound card will not be able to swing the speaker membrane enough, the sound will be plain and dull. If, on the contrary, it is lower (16 ohms), then there will be no problems with the buildup, but the electrical load on the sound card will increase, which, theoretically, may reduce its service life. But you shouldn't exaggerate these problems, most of even very weak sound cards will work fine with headphones with an impedance of about 24-48 ohms. And the high-quality audio codec of the gaming motherboard does an excellent job with headphones with an impedance of about 60 ohms, not to mention discrete sound cards.

Autonomy- determines how much wireless headphones can work on a single charge in continuous sound playback mode. Usually, the approximate time is indicated at 50% volume. The minimum is about 5 hours, but more acceptable is considered to be from 8 hours. More expensive models can work 16-20 hours on a single charge, sometimes more. Here, just focus on your needs and capabilities. But keep in mind that if in the headphones of decent brands this indicator usually corresponds to reality, then for cheap Chinese brands the real indicator may be 2 times lower. In addition, battery capacity decreases over time and battery life can be significantly reduced. Therefore, I recommend taking headphones with an autonomy margin of 1.5-2 times the minimum level you need.

Manufacturers and stores may indicate other parameters of the headphones, but they will not tell you anything and rarely correspond to reality, so you can ignore them.

9. Microphone characteristics

Microphones differ in design, directivity and some other parameters.

9.1. Microphone design

In terms of shape and location, microphones can be divided into:

  • gooseneck
  • retractable
  • fixed
  • removable
  • built-in
  • on cable

- a very common microphone design, usually involving a pivot from the top non-working position downward closer to the lips, as well as a slight fold in either direction. Of the advantages, it can be noted that it can be brought very close, which will allow you to speak very quietly. It can also be tucked up frequently when not needed. Among the disadvantages are constant wear and tear of the structure and not the highest durability. A microphone switch can be built into the swivel mechanism.

- may look like a gooseneck, but move out of the cup as needed and be somewhat shorter. In principle, an acceptable design, does not interfere, but does not extend to the very lips. This design is slightly more durable.

Alternatively, it can have the same pivoting design as in the case of the gooseneck, but be completely plastic not bendable, often also shorter. In principle, this can be convenient, but the wear and tear when turning is not going anywhere. Also can have turn on / off function.

- it just sticks out of the cup and does not move anywhere, which makes the design more reliable and more convenient, but it should be short and durable so as not to interfere with putting on the table, storing the headphones and so that it does not break.

- usually attaches to the left cup as needed and can be gooseneck or non-bendable plastic. This option is most appropriate if you rarely use the microphone. A permanently fastened long microphone without the possibility of rotation will greatly interfere with putting the headphones on the table. Personally, I add it once a month, when someone from my acquaintances drags me into the tanks for a ride, and then if it's at night and I can't speak through the webcam.

- usually located in the earcup and may be invisible, in the form of a small hole like on a smartphone. In cheaper models, you may need to speak a little louder than usual. But in higher quality digital headphones, it might even be better than a gooseneck that can be bent right up to your lips.

- is a convenient, but not the best solution in terms of audibility. If you speak loudly enough all the time, then this will not be a problem. But in any case, it is desirable that it be as high as possible, some manufacturers hang the microphone so that it will be on your belly, if not on your knees and you will have to attach it with an additional clothespin to your clothes higher, which is very inconvenient.

In general, if you use the microphone often enough, then I would recommend that it be short (fixed, retractable, swivel) or built into the cup (in high-quality headphones). Long and detachable microphones are inconvenient for frequent use, and the microphone on the cable requires high positioning and raising the voice.

9.2. Microphone directivity

Microphones come in unidirectional (directional) and omnidirectional (non-directional) microphones.

Unidirectional microphone- most often used in headsets, especially with a gooseneck and various retractable options that are designed to bring the microphone closer to the lips. The pluses of the directional microphone include the fact that it picks up little background noise, which is very important for games.

Omnidirectional microphone- can be built into the ear cups or be on the wire. He picks up sounds from all directions. So, if you have a TV in your room, then the Turkish series that your spouse watches will "delight" the whole team in the game chat. However, in a quality digital noise canceling headset and in an environment free from external noise, such a microphone can provide superior voice quality. Also, through an omnidirectional microphone, you can communicate with the whole family or company via Skype, which, however, is usually done using the same omnidirectional webcam microphone.

Select the directivity of the microphone according to the conditions in which you will be using it. If in a noisy environment, then it is better directed, if you are sitting in a separate quiet room, then you can undirected. This can greatly affect the quality of communication.

9.3. Microphone options

Other microphone parameters include sensitivity and noise reduction.

Sensitivity- the sensitivity of the microphone depends on how much quiet sounds he can catch. In this case, the directivity of the microphone must be taken into account. If the microphone is directional, then a higher sensitivity will have a positive effect on the quality of voice transmission and it will be possible to speak more quietly. If the microphone is omnidirectional, then it does not need an unnecessarily high sensitivity, since it will be caught extraneous sounds... Microphone sensitivity is measured in decibels (dB), but interpreted as the opposite of loudness level. That is, a -38dB microphone is more sensitive than a -54dB microphone. In other words, the smaller the numbers, the higher the sensitivity.

10. Surround sound and vibration

Some headphones and headsets support surround sound technology that can be realized physically or virtually, some also have vibration. They usually have a built-in sound card and are connected via USB.

Physical implementation- implies the presence of an honest 5.1 or 7.1 speaker system, so that the user can hear from which direction the sound is coming (front, back, left, right). This is useful in games, but not necessary in most cases. Moreover, quality systems surround sound is expensive, while cheap ones cannot provide good sound.

Virtual Surround Sound- usually content with two speakers, but due to the playing of frequencies, it gives the sound some direction, as in the 5.1 system. Again, in more expensive devices, this works better and does help some users better navigate the space. In cheap models, this is just a marketing ploy and does not work well. In any case, all this is not for everybody.

Vibration- assumes the presence of vibration motors in the headphones (as in a mobile phone), it is light, but most often it is quite powerful. Cheap manufacturers usually lure with such "chips" inexperienced users... In reality, at best, it quickly gets boring, and at worst it starts to hurt your head. Those. this option is very much an amateur.

For gaming use only, surround sound headphones can in principle be purchased. But they shouldn't be cheap and from a decent brand. As universal and for listening to music, it is better to give preference to a high-quality stereo model. I recommend refusing vibration, this function can of course be disabled, but the headphones are unlikely to be of good quality.

11. Control elements

Headphones, and especially headsets, may have various elements management.

Remote controller- usually it is a small block on a cable with which you can adjust the volume and switch tracks. This is, in principle, convenient for universal headsets that can be used in conjunction with mobile devices. But this somewhat reduces reliability, since conductors can be broken in the area of the console. Some remote controls (mainly in expensive headsets) may have a built-in digital-to-analog converter(DAC) or, simply put, an adapter from 3.5 ″ to USB or vice versa. This makes the headphones more versatile, allowing you to connect them both with a conventional analog interface and digital. However, it is better to use the adapter on a periodic basis, and not on a permanent basis, as it still reduces the reliability of the connection.

- basically useful thing, but for computer headset optional, since you can adjust the volume from the operating system or using the keyboard. For example, I never use a knob on my headphones. But for use with mobile devices, it is convenient. If the regulator is made in the form of a wheel, then over time it can wear out and deteriorate. Buttons in this regard are less convenient, but more durable.

- very useful function for a computer headset, since you do not always need to be heard in the game. For example, you may want to go somewhere or you need to talk to your family. After all, you may be noisy at times and don't want to disturb your teammates. It is more convenient if the microphone is disabled separate button, and in a digital headset there may also be sound accompaniment (to understand, the microphone has turned on or off). Some, mostly inexpensive headsets, have a mechanism to turn on / off the microphone when it is turned (translated into and out of the working position). This is interesting and, in principle, convenient, but not so reliable, in addition, the click can be unpleasant in the ears.

- can be on a mobile or universal headset, allowing you to switch tracks, answer calls, change the operating mode, turn the wireless headset on and off. All this is good and it is desirable that with the help of them it was possible to produce everything necessary actions without taking your smartphone out of your pocket. It also matters where the buttons are located and how big they are. Sometimes the buttons are very small and tight, which is inconvenient. Place your hand to your ear and try to understand where and how convenient the buttons are. Also read user reviews for their convenience.

When evaluating controls, be guided by your needs. For a gaming headset, it is desirable to have the ability to mute the microphone, for a mobile or universal, a full set of necessary functions.

12. Cable

You also need to pay special attention to the headphone or headset cable, as ease of use depends on it.

Length of cable- is of great importance and when connected to a far-standing system unit, it is desirable that it be within 1.8-2 m. The same 1.5 m may not be enough anymore. Of course, it can be extended with an extension cord, but the quality and reliability of the connection will suffer. For a universal headset, on the contrary, it is better to have a shorter cable in the region of 0.8-1.2 m, plus an extension cable for connecting to a PC. Because extra wire will interfere when used with mobile devices. In any case, be guided by your specific conditions for the location of the computer and what you wear your smartphone.

Cable thickness- on the one hand, the higher the more reliable, but on the other, the thick cable is much heavier and pulls the headphones down, which is very uncomfortable. Especially the thickness of the cable is essential for a universal headset when used with mobile devices. In this case, it is best to keep the cable thin or of medium thickness (for a short cable).

Cable shape- can be round, twisted, flat (noodles) or double. A thin round cable is prone to twisting (tangling), which some people dislike. On the other hand, it is lightweight and compact, which is more important for me personally. Sometimes the cable can be completely or partially twisted (like on a telephone receiver), which, in my opinion, is absolutely inconvenient. Some people like the flat cable called "noodles" because it doesn't get tangled. But this is mainly relevant for mobile use and personally I do not like it, as it turns out to be heavy and takes up more space (especially in compact plugs). But if the flat cable is not too long or is used in purely computer headphones, then this does not matter. Sometimes there are still headphones with a double cable (like an ordinary Soviet wire), it is not clear why it is used, since it curls more strongly, but on the other hand, it is quite reliable and in long cables the signal attenuates less, since the veins in it are thicker. This cable is used in some Sennheiser music lovers.

The presence of a braid- has a positive effect on the durability of the cable. Plus, it glides better, curls less and is generally more enjoyable to use. Although for me personally, the presence of a braid is not important, its presence is still better than the absence of it, and many headphones from the middle and higher price range have it.

- these are a kind of rubber or flexible plastic inserts along the edges of the cable (at the junction with the connector and the cup). They do not allow the cable to bend in these most vulnerable places to dangerous corners that can lead to damage (broken cores) or breakage in case of accidental jerks. Many headphones have such protection, and in more expensive ones it is made of a higher quality (soft molded inserts), which provides excellent protection.

Detachable cable- used in some models of headphones with replaceable cables different lengths or functionality. There are also models with one cable, but for some reason it is removable. To be honest, it is not clear why this was done, because the cost increases and the reliability of the connection decreases. In addition, it is not always possible to replace this cable with another one, since it has non-standard connectors with a special lock (so as not to fall out).

I would recommend choosing computer headphones with a rather long (1.8-2 m), round, not very thick cable. Braiding is encouraged, but not required. Kink protection also matters for durability. A detachable cable is less reliable, since these are extra pins, but in good, not the cheapest headphones, it is of sufficient quality, so it doesn't matter.

For a universal headset, on the contrary, it is better to choose a shorter cable (0.8-1.2 m) so that it does not interfere when used with mobile devices. And to connect to a distant PC, it is desirable to have an extension cable in the kit (although it can be purchased separately). As for the flat noodle cable, I personally don’t like it, but there are other opinions, so there’s no universal advice, it’s better to try it live (regardless of the headphone model).

13. Package Contents

In addition to the headphones themselves with a cable and a microphone, the kit may include:

  • extension cord / remote control (1-2 m)
  • adapter (USB / Mini Jack)
  • stand / charging
  • carry pouch

Also, there are often several versions of the same headphones with different configurations. Here, look at your needs and capabilities, what is important for you, and what you can save on. For example, you can buy a bag or the simplest audio extension cable without any problems and it is cheap. Although, complete extension cords are usually of better quality and longer lasting.

Some, mostly chinese headphones, can be supplied in a nice box or in a simple bag. Sometimes the difference in price can be 1.5-2 times. But, if the difference is still small ($ 3-5), then it is better to prefer a higher quality packaging. It may turn out to be not only better in terms of safety, but also in terms of the quality of manufacture of the headphones themselves and equipment. Since they are designed for export in a box, and in a package, they are mainly intended for the domestic consumer market.

14. The best manufacturers

I will give here not only manufacturers of headphones and headsets for a computer, but also for mobile devices, as well as some music lover brands. Since no one forbids them to be used in conjunction with a PC and they are suitable for those who appreciate high sound quality. Most of these headphones do not have a microphone, although there are exceptions.

With the rapid development of information and communication technologies, you can more and more often see a person with headphones in the subway, on the street, at home. If initially they were used for radio communication, then later the audio device became a massive means of consuming information. To choose the most suitable headset for his smartphone or tablet, the user needs to understand the basic characteristics of the device. Before considering what and how the impedance in headphones affects, let's figure out what impedance is. Knowing this information, you can extend the operating life of the equipment.

Headphone impedance gives input resistance... The performance and technical properties of portable devices for listening to sound depend on this characteristic. To find out how much a technique requires the amount of energy to provide good sound, this parameter is indicated in the passport of portable devices.

The unit for measuring the electrical resistance of a conductive element is Ohm.

Headphones with a nominal impedance of 16-40 ohms are suitable for pocket audio players and modern smartphones. This value ensures that the unit sounds high at low output levels. When connected to a headset with standard sound cards using special amplifiers choose an audio device with high impedance parameters - 120-150 Ohm. Devices with high resistance electrical resistance suitable for professionals who work on special equipment with an increased level of outgoing voltage.

Varieties of equipment depending on the resistance values

In the multimedia equipment market, manufacturers offer a wide range of different devices with different technical characteristics: sensitivity, impedance, frequency range. Based on what kind of headphones give resistance, two types of equipment are distinguished: high-impedance and low-impedance devices. For full-size and in-ear headsets, the parameters of the separation boundaries are different.

  1. Low impedance headset- devices, the impedance of which for in-channel devices is not more than 32 Ohm, for full-size devices - not more than 100 Ohm.
  2. High resistance devices- impedance of which for in-ear devices is more than 32 Ohm. For full sizes, the value must be over 100 ohms.

Impedance curve for different types of devices

Let us consider what information is given by the graph of the dependence of the frequency in the range from 20 to 20,000 Hz on the resistance for different varieties devices.

Based on the impedance curves, it can be seen that the declared value in the headset is different from the actual values.

Optimal impedance values for use with various devices

To purchase devices with a good range sound playback, the resistance values must be taken into account. The sensitivity of devices with high resistance is less than that of low-resistance models. Therefore, the battery life of technical devices when using headphones with different impedances does not coincide. Consider optimal values the level of consumed electric voltage for various devices.

  1. Smartphone. The nominal impedance for the best sounding of the headphones is a low impedance (for example, 22 ohms). V in this case devices, in addition to good sound, will consume more current. In order to play music on a smartphone for longer, a 32-ohm model is chosen. When using devices with an iPhone, models with standard audio frequency ranges of 22-32 ohms are suitable. Headphones-monitors are impractical to use without auxiliary accessories: a portable amplifier, an audio player with a powerful sound card.
  2. Player. The most optimal headphone impedance for a standard device is 16 ohms. If the audio players have a more powerful output (Hidisz or iHiFi) that provides a level of electrical voltage more than 200 mV, choose less sensitive devices with an impedance of 32 ohms. Such devices reduce current consumption and increase battery life.

When choosing a listening technique, take into account the following points:

  • in reality, one-driver reinforcement devices (Grado GR10, different models Klipsh, Etymotic) have a higher average resistance, so audio players and smartphones work with them long time without recharging;
  • multi-driver dynamic and reinforcement technology has a lower average resistance, so smartphones or players operate for a short time without recharging.

Portable amplifier for optimal sound

High-impedance headphones are used not only by professional musicians, but also by simple music lovers. To listen to music at a sufficient volume, you need to match the power of the speakers with the device. In this case, absolutely all frequencies are reproduced, and the sound is of high quality. Helps to solve this problem portable amplifier for headphones - it provides high fidelity sound reproduction.

The principle of operation of the amplifier is as follows: due to the high impedance value in the headphones, the device gives off less current, which prevents frequency distortion separate cascades. The high-impedance headset has a uniform frequency response due to the use of an amplifier.

In order to avoid deterioration of the performance of headphones and their rapid wear, when buying equipment, pay attention to the impedance. Which one is better depends on the devices with which they will interact. This parameter must match the audio model and the listening device. The impedance for different varieties of earbuds will affect the sound quality and ensure stable work audio devices.

Anyone who has had to stay up late at a personal computer knows that in order to maintain the peace of people who are already resting, they should use headphones. You can play your favorite game or watch new episodes of an exciting series without causing any inconvenience, only if you choose headphones for your computer in a timely manner. Varieties of accessory, selection criteria and the most popular models will be discussed in this material.

Types of headphones

Every year the market for computer and telephone accessories is replenished with new manufacturers. In a healthy competition, more and more types of headphones appear: a new design is invented, the best ergonomics are developed, additional functions... And the opening the latest technologies dictates the search for new solutions. Let's consider the division of headphones into main categories.

By the presence of a wire

All headphones are divided into wired and wireless models.... With the advent of digital and analog signals, it became possible to transmit audio files wirelessly over a distance. This has added comfort to some aspects of our life. People leading an active lifestyle turned out to be the winners, since a wireless gadget allows:

  • lead telephone conversations driving a car;
  • record under dictation from the phone without speakerphone;
  • jog to your favorite music.

This is not an exhaustive list of the benefits of wireless connectivity. Many users are also satisfied with hands free when talking on the phone.

Important! The main advantage remains to increase the durability of the headset, which is ensured by the absence of a plug, which most often became the cause of the breakdown of the headphones, and the wire, which is constantly frayed due to kinks.

But with all these positive aspects, wireless headset noticeable loss of sound quality... This is the price of wireless, although cutting-edge electronics manufacturers are developing ways to improve playback. But for now, enjoyment perfect quality the sound when listening to musical compositions remains with the wired models.

By connection method

Wireless headsets, in turn, are divided into:

  • using infrared radiation;
  • transmitting sound in the FM range;
  • working via Wi-Fi;
  • using Bluetooth technology.

Bluetooth technologies are steadily improving and are gradually replacing other transmission methods as outdated. But there is still a lot of equipment in operation that does not have a Bluetooth module in their circuits. Therefore, there is a use all the above methods.

For example, devices with infrared They work on the principle of a remote control and are mainly used for watching movies at night on TV. Headphones that use the FM band are useful for those who need to move away from the signal source at a distance of up to 150 meters. In both cases the sound goes with a severe loss of quality and is capable of interruption due to an obstruction.

Today is one of the best technology... On the computer gadget installs a device that converts the uncompressed audio stream and sends it to the speakers. The sound covers long distances and almost does not lose in its quality.

Even bluetooth modules do not always cope with this task: due to the need to compress sound files there is a loss in quality for transmission. Only availability of codecs high class saves the day. And this is a tangible increase in the price of the accessory. And the range of bluetooth leaves much to be desired - only 10 meters. And through the walls, the distance decreases even more. Although on this moment there are already models that transmit a signal at 100 meters, but the sound quality is reduced significantly.

By way of wearing

In most cases, soundproofing comes first when choosing a PC headset. And only then is the sound quality and wearing comfort. For example, thanks to the smaller size of the membranes, as well as silicone ear pads, The vacuum earbuds fit directly into the ear canal... This method completely isolates the ear from other sounds. The plugs allow you to hear the bass, but the sound quality is still far from the desired level.

The earbuds are easy to insert into the auricle. They do not have ear cushions, and therefore the ear can distinguish loud street sounds. This quality is positive for joggers with music. Here in the membrane the low frequencies are almost completely overlapped by the high and medium ones. Hearing deep bass is simply impossible. Due to the fact that the auricle is individual for each person, it is extremely difficult to choose your size. Therefore, the earbuds have a tendency to either fall out or cause pain in the ear. The only plus is that they are inexpensive.

They are called so because they are superimposed on the ears. They do not completely close the auricle, so complete sound insulation is out of the question. But their sound quality is already at the proper height. This gadget is very comfortable to wear. Only over-ear headphones can be better than over-ear headphones.

Purpose of headphones for PC and selection criteria

Working or enjoying a PC takes quite a long time, so the headphones should be very comfortable, invisible on the head and ears for many hours. Therefore all portable options simply disappear even wired.

Advice! With the liners, everything is very clear - the budget street version. But the plugs, although they can immerse the user in the world of sound, but their long use creates a strain on the ears. In view of this, you should leave this option for the phone and the MP3 player taken on the road.

Even on-ear headphones cannot always satisfy the high demands of gamers. Although many people use them for games and chatting on Skype (if the accessory is with a headset). But often similar models act as universal ones and are taken on hikes down the street. And the constant switching between devices does not contribute to the durability of the headphones and high-quality sound.

A stationary personal computer requires good non-replaceable headphones... Preferably with a USB connector - for better connection, and with a long wire - to create some room for maneuver. And in this role, many see only full-size accessories.

It is better to discard all remote options due to the controversial sound quality. This applies to even the best Wi-Fi headphones in their category. It is more convenient to leave them for the laptop.

Important! To fully enjoy the music and for maximum immersion in the game on desktop computer, only wired monitor headphones are needed.

Let them be without a microphone, you can use a separate one for negotiations. In this case, we choose the device not for its versatility, but for the maximum possible disclosure of all the nuances of the musical composition. All the rest of the potential acts as a side, but from this no less pleasant bonus.

Monitor headphones were created for studio work with sound, which is why gamers and music lovers drew attention to them. The ability to completely isolate from the outside world has been correctly appreciated by many, and from studio headphones to home headphones- games and music.

Specifications

Head monitors, also called full-size headphones, are open and closed type. Closed options have no holes on the outside, thanks to which they are completely soundproof. This is the choice of professional studio sound engineers. However, due to the serious strain on the ear, these headphones require frequent interruptions in use.

Whereas the headset open type has holes on the outside which create the effect of incomplete isolation. As a result, the ear gets tired much less and there is no need to take breaks. For this quality, headphones are very much appreciated by gamers and music lovers.

To find good headphones, you need to understand a little about the characteristics of the models.

  1. For music lovers, a very important parameter is distortion level... The lower the percentage value, the more accurate the signal reproduction. The numbers above 0.5 - 1.0% indicate a mediocre sound. Thus, the lower the indicators, the better the sound quality.
  2. Quality is also affected by the accessory's ability to transmit frequency range... The wider it is, the more colorfully the device will convey all the nuances of the musical composition.
  3. Sensitivity affects the ability to increase the sound volume.
  4. Impedance Is resistance. It shows how well the apparatus suppresses electrical noise. A desktop PC gives excellent output signal, so it is better to buy headphones with high impedance.
  5. An indicator such as noise suppression, for home headphones is not critical. It is important for accessories worn on noisy streets.

Attention! It should be recalled that the maximum sound volume is 100 dB. Overestimation of this indicator will already be critical for ear health.

For clarity, all parameters are reflected in the following table.

Parameters Monitor
Weight (gram) 5 – 30 150 – 300
Range (Hz) 100 – 16 000 16 – 22 000
Volume (dB) 70 – 100 90 – 120
Impedance (Ohm) 15 – 30 18 – 150

So that all these important indicators have the most maximum value, you must connect the headphones to the computer via a cable, excluding the possibility of using wireless technologies.

Review of popular manufacturers

Before giving a rating of the most popular models, from budget to premium, you need to dwell on one important aspect. Modern pop music has very poor recording quality, therefore, one should not be surprised at the disappointment from listening to such compositions even on semi-deluxe class models. For the same reason, if you are not a fan of the classical genre or studio jazz albums, you should not buy the most expensive and therefore the highest quality headphones.

So, a review of the best in their price category headphone according to surveys for 2017 - 2018, is as follows.

The Brooklyn-based company has perfected its already high-quality SR60. Now, for $ 65, you can purchase an open design, which even more "hooks" with volumetric sound images. This budget-class gadget is great compatible with such directions as rock, acoustics, blues and country... The model has more elaborate bass. In general, the Grado headphones fell in love with fans for their magical sound signature.

This is the pinnacle of audio detail in the mid-range. Headphones were conceived for professional studios, so the accuracy of sound transmission is superior to analog and. Because of this, do not forget about high-quality recordings, otherwise you can get frustrated when listening.
