Smartphones (world market). Technology for a Better Experience

Typically, Apple launches one flagship smartphone each year. But this year, two devices were launched almost simultaneously. At the end of September, Apple started selling in Russian iPhone 8. And on November 3, the iPhone X went on sale - the most expensive smartphone in the history of this brand. In October, a little more than 77,000 were sold in Russia, employees of several retailers told Vedomosti. And in November, more than 130,000 iPhone 8 and iPhone X were sold together. With the release of two new iPhones in late September and November, sales of all smartphones more expensive than 40,000 rubles decreased, an employee of one of the retail chains noted.

The growth in market share is a consequence of the almost simultaneous appearance of the iPhone 8 and iPhone X on the market, according to a representative of the Inventive Retail Group (which owns the Apple stores re:Store) Lyudmila Semushina. iPhone output X for the first time in the history of iPhone sales in Russia took place simultaneously with the countries of the first wave, she recalls. After the release of new models, there was a price reduction for the iPhone 7, which also stimulated iPhone sales in Russia, Semushina claims. iPhone 8/8 plus and iPhone X sales at re:Store are already a third higher than last year's iPhone 7/7plus sales, and there are still days of peak New Year sales ahead, she says.

Annual release of new flagship smartphones Apple stimulates demand for the brand's products, notes the head of the department " Mobile technology» «M.video» Sergey Sukhorukov. Typically, a surge in demand lasts a couple of months, after which the balance of power between the leading market players is restored - smartphones from both Apple and Samsung are popular as gifts on the eve of the New Year, he notes. This year, the effect of the release of new products for Apple was stronger than in previous years, since two models entered the market almost simultaneously, Sukhorukov continues.

On the one hand, the simultaneous launch of two flagships complicates the marketing of the product, says Dmitry Kravchenko, CEO of Acer in Russia. But on the other hand, there will be buyers who will not like one device, but who will buy another, he argues.

With the fact that the almost simultaneous launch of two flagships at once helped to achieve an increase in market share, Denis Kuskov, CEO of Telecom Daily, agrees. According to him, 2017 was quite successful for Apple in Russia: for example, the iPhone SE with 32 GB of memory became the best-selling smartphone in Russia.

At the same time, in the US, the new product from Apple cannot boast of the same success. The share of iPhone X in the first full month of sales was 30%, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing research company Consumer Intelligence Research Partners. For comparison: last year for the iPhone 7 this figure was 73%, for the iPhone 6s in 2015 - 71%, and for the iPhone 6 a year earlier it was 91%. Users or chose inexpensive models, or couldn't find it on sale, explains Consumer Intelligence partner Michael Levin. In his opinion, iPhone X sales were negatively affected by the fact that it was offered along with other, less expensive models.

Market Review

February 2017

Company J'son& Partnersconsultingpresents the main results of the study “Russian smartphone market. Results of 2016”.

Dynamics of the Russian market of smartphones and mobile phones

According to J'son & Partners Consulting, in 2016 the volume of the Russian smartphone market in physical terms amounted to 26.4 million devices. Compared to 2015, the market grew by 4.4%, compared to 2014 - by 1%. Thus, we can say that the smartphone market is gradually starting to recover from the consequences of the ruble devaluation, and users are starting to get used to new realities and adapt to new prices for devices.

Share of smartphones in total sales mobile terminals(total sales of mobile phones and smartphones) in 2016 amounted to about 71% in physical terms, which is 5 percentage points higher than a year earlier.

Growth in smartphone sales continues to impact many related markets, including the conventional mobile phone market. According to J'son & Partners Consulting, the Russian mobile phone market continued to decline in 2016 and amounted to 10.8 million devices. Nevertheless, push-button phones still occupy about a third of the mobile terminal market. They are still in demand among visitors, pensioners, children, and also as a second handset for smartphone users.

Along with sales in physical terms, the average cost of these devices is also decreasing. According to J'son & Partners Consulting, in 2016 it decreased by 6% compared to 2015 and amounted to 1.7 thousand rubles.

Main trends in the Russian smartphone market

  • The Explosive Growth of LTE Smartphones

In 2016, every second smartphone sold supported high-speed Internet LTE. Sales of smartphones with an LTE module more than doubled in 2016 compared to 2015. The main market growth drivers are an increase in the range of LTE devices, a decrease in their average cost, as well as increased demand for devices in the middle and premium price segment.

  • Growth in the average retail price of smartphones

The average retail price of smartphones increased in 2016 by 22% compared to the previous year and amounted to 12.1 thousand rubles. This is the highest average retail price for a smartphone since 2009. The increase in value compared to last year was influenced by the growing demand for devices price category“above 15 thousand rubles”, which, in turn, was facilitated by an increase in sales of devices purchased on credit.

  • The growth of the diagonal display of smartphones

The average display diagonal of a smartphone sold in Russia in 2016 was 4.6 inches. In addition, the share of smartphones with a diagonal of 5 inches or more increased from 31% in 2015 to 46% in 2016. The growth in sales of smartphones with a large diagonal display affects the increase in the use of video content, TV and applications.

The trend, which began even before the start of the economic crisis, continued after the devaluation of the ruble. A number of manufacturers popular in the formation of the Russian smartphone market - Sony, HTC, Nokia / Microsoft - at the end of 2016 occupied only 5% of the smartphone market in physical terms. Their place is taken by Chinese companies selling devices at a more attractive price. In 2016, according to J'son & Partners Consulting, in the top ten best-selling manufacturers in Russia, Chinese companies occupy half of the positions.

Market participants' comments

The average price of a smartphone sold in MegaFon brand stores in 2016 increased by 38.5%, to 7,501 rubles against 5,390 rubles in 2015. This is due to the fact that consumers have got used to the economic situation and are gradually adapting to its conditions. Buying activity is on the rise, last year customers bought more than expensive smartphones. We see a redistribution of the market from budget devices(bestsellers of 2015) to devices of the middle and high price segment. As a rule, devices costing from 10 thousand rubles have high performance, large and high-quality screen and LTE support.

Judging by the list of sales leaders, the buyer still saves on the brand, preferring inexpensive products, but no longer saves on device functionality, wanting to use multifunctional and productive gadgets.

One of the significant trends of the past year was the growth in sales of LTE smartphones. The growth in sales of smartphones with LTE in the last months of 2016 will increase the volume of Internet traffic in Q1-Q2 2017, which, we hope, will translate into revenue growth for MegaFon due to the transition of customers to package rates with a wide range of services.

- How do you assess the prospects for the development of the smartphone market in 2017? What is the future of conventional mobile phones? Will they be in demand on the market in the future or will they completely disappear from sales over time?

In MegaFon Retail stores following the results of 9 months of 2016 out of total number about 62% of sold phones are smartphones. There is potential to increase penetration in the coming years, so we are confident that in 2017 the penetration of smartphones into MegaFon's subscriber base will continue to grow. The number of digital customers who actively use the possibilities of the mobile Internet and applications will also increase. At the same time, push-button phones, although they are being replaced by smartphones, will still be popular with certain categories of subscribers (primarily children, the elderly). Over time, their number will decrease, but they will not completely leave the market.

- What are the trends in Russian market smartphones in 2016 you highlight?

According to Svyaznoy, the smartphone market in Russia in 2016 increased both in units and in rubles.

Growth in 2016 was driven by several factors. The smartphone is becoming more and more universal device. With the development of technology, one gadget can combine more and more useful functions. A smartphone partially replaces a digital camera, laptop, personal PC. Phablets (smartphones with a diagonal of more than 5 inches), due to the optimal size for the buyer, successfully compete with tablets and e-books.

The positive dynamics in the smartphone segment was also influenced by the increase in the availability of credit products compared to 2015. The availability of a wide range of credit products, especially installment programs available in the stores of large retailers, allows buyers to reduce the burden on their own budget and distribute it over a long period.

Other drivers of smartphone sales growth in 2016 include pent-up demand in 2015 and the ongoing process of consumer replacement of conventional mobile phones with smartphones. Recall that during the period of excitement in October-December 2014, the demand for smartphones grew significantly - many customers, fearing rising prices for electronics, bought smart phone during the course jump.

In 2016, the market in rubles increased more than in units. Higher dynamics is due to the growth in demand for gadgets of high price segments, in particular, the entire iPhone lineups, which is sold in all categories over 20 thousand rubles. The popularity of the iPhone also spurred the release of new products in October 2016.

- How do you assess the prospects for the development of the smartphone market in 2017?

In 2017, we expect smartphones to continue to be key communication devices (the “first screen”) and continue to influence sales in other personal electronics categories. According to our forecasts, unit sales of smartphones in Russia in 2017 will at least remain at the level of 2016.

The continued popularity of smartphones will drive the growth of certain categories of personal electronics (eg smart-wearables) and will continue to negatively affect sales in other segments (eg tablets, digital cameras, e-readers, etc.).

- What is the future of conventional mobile phones? Will they be in demand on the market in the future or will they completely disappear from sales over time?

In our opinion, ordinary mobile phones still have their own audience, they remain in demand among a number of buyers. This is due, firstly, to the fact that enough a large number of people for whom the basic functionality of the phone - calls and SMS - is enough for everyday needs. Secondly, the price of a push-button device is lower than that of a smartphone, and for some buyers, the cost is a decisive advantage.

In the short term, push-button phones will not leave the market, as there are several categories of buyers at once who prefer the simplest devices. Mostly these are people of the older generation.

The smartphone market is starting to recover gradually. Obviously, the Russian market cell phones and smartphones is steadily stabilizing, primarily due to the growth in sales of smartphones. Nevertheless, the buyer has not yet recovered from a long crisis, and a rational approach to the consumer basket continues to dominate, primarily due to the choice of the most advantageous offer in terms of price / quality ratio and the purchase of devices on credit.

Smartphones show a positive trend in the number of sales. This trend due to an increase in the share of devices purchased on credit. If last year the policy of banks in relation to consumer lending was restrained and banks were reluctant to issue loans to the population, then in 2016 their outlook changed, and the number of loans increased markedly. The loyal policy of the banks allowed the population to purchase more expensive models of phones, which provokes a continuing increase in the average price. Retailers, in turn, offer customers a large number of credit products with maximum benefits. In particular, interest-free installments served as a strong impetus for the entire market, which to a greater extent caused an increase in the average price of a smartphone.

We see that people began to buy more expensive smartphones more often, so the average price in the market has increased. The smartphone, which only yesterday cost several thousand more, became available at a more attractive price, which allowed the population to purchase premium devices. Thus, the April price cut pumped almost all segments, but especially premium smartphones, from 20 thousand rubles.

The economic situation had the least impact on the cell phone segment (non-OS devices). Demand for devices has already reached saturation, and even the stabilization of the economic situation does not allow the cell phone market to return to positive dynamics.

Smartphones have long won the status of "consumer goods" and continue to cannibalize other related markets that were falling before the crisis and continue to decline until now.

In 2017, we expect the recovery of the cell phone and smartphone market to continue, with numbers varying in line with last year's data or with very slight positive gains.

Among the trends that are least affected by the economic factor, we can note the continued growth in the popularity of smartphones with a display diagonal of more than 5 inches (phablets), as well as the increasing popularity of gadgets with LTE support.

To paraphrase the famous lines of V. Mayakovsky “All smartphones are good, choose according to your taste.”

In the total number of smartphones sold in Russia, domestic developments account for less than 10%. Russian developments are inferior to competitors from China, who take in quantity and scale. The latter account for more than 30% of the market

In the nine months of 2017, 1.7 million smartphones under "Russian" brands were sold in Russia in the amount of 6.8 billion rubles, according to the report of the Svyaznoy retail chain (available to RBC). It's about about smartphones designed in Russia but assembled in Southeast Asia.

In total, according to Svyaznoy, 20.4 million smartphones worth 257.5 billion rubles were sold in Russia in the first nine months. Thus, Russian brands accounted for 8.3% of the market in unit terms and 2.6% in monetary terms. Following the results of nine months of 2016, the share of these devices was 6.4 and 2.9% of the market, respectively. The decrease in the share of the smartphone market was not due to a drop in the revenue of Russian developers, but due to lower growth rates of the indicator compared to the entire market.

The top five most popular Russian smartphone brands for the first nine months of 2017 included Digma, DEXP, Vertex, Highscreen and Oysters, a Svyaznoy representative said. The Russian ones also include Texet, Irbis, 4GOOD, Stark, Ginzzu and a number of others, whose sales can amount to thousands of devices per year.

Sales of Russian smartphones have begun to recover after falling a few years ago due to a surge in the popularity of devices from Chinese manufacturers, which are actively developing in budget price segments. In particular, in 2014, Russian brands in units accounted for 9.7% of the market, in 2015 - 8.2%, and in 2016 - 7%. At the same time, the share of Chinese brands in unit terms increased from 19.4% in 2014 to 34% in the first nine months of 2017, and in money terms - from 14.3 to 25%.

According to the forecast of Sergey Tikhonov, the representative of Svyaznoy, the share of Russian brands in the smartphone segment will gradually increase in the next two years due to the growth in demand for devices of individual brands that are presented in large retail chains, as well as maintaining popularity budget smartphones generally. “The gadget of a domestic company is often chosen as the first smartphone or as a replacement push-button telephone. Russian smartphone it is inexpensive, it is functional and reliable for its price,” Tikhonov said.

Svyaznoy's statistics do not take into account smartphones developed in Russia and sold under the brands of mobile operators. Although devices under the Tele2 brand (it works under mobile operator"T2 RTK Holding"), according to the results of the second quarter, occupied in sales in Russia with a share of 4%, according to Counterpoint Research. "T2 RTK Holding" does not develop devices itself, for it, as well as for other operators, they do it special companies, among which there are Russian players (production of devices is carried out at factories in Southeast Asia). For example, the IT company Technoserv. Andrey Borodin, vice president of Technoserv, told RBC that since 2014, when the company began manufacturing branded devices on order mobile operators, she sold about 650-700 thousand smartphones. At the peak (the period is not specified. — RBC) this business segment brought the company about 1 billion rubles. revenue per year.

The representative of MTS, the largest network selling mobile devices, Dmitry Solodovnikov named Digma, DEXP and Highscreen among the leading Russian brands of smartphones. Together they account for 4.7% of the total number of smartphones sold in Russia in the first nine months of this year. How much other Russian brands occupy, MTS did not evaluate, referring to the fact that the share of each is too small, below 0.7%.

Denis Kuskov, CEO of the information and analytical agency Telecom Daily, notes that Chinese brands are different, among them there are quite strong ones: Huawei, Xiaomi, ZTE, OPPO. "They have more the right approach to the use of components, the formation of a range of devices and their promotion. These are solid models with well-thought-out technologies. Our developers often lower the bar, believing that someone will buy the device anyway, ”says Kuskov.

According to Eldar Murtazin, a leading analyst at Mobile Research Group, Chinese brands win in quantity - there are several dozen of them. “These are companies of a size incomparable with domestic players. It is difficult to compete with them in terms of the size of investments, the cost of devices, and in this segment the one who offers the lowest price wins. In addition, in pursuit of quality, our companies often spend too much time developing a device; by the time it is released, it is already outdated,” says Murtazin.

gadget war Android and Apple switch to quality new level. Experts from IDC, a company that has been providing analytical reports on the information technology and telecommunications market for 50 years, predict a drop in sales of Apple smartphones.
