Long walked around and around this phone. I chose between X compact, just X and Iphone SE. But, having picked up a compact, I wanted this particular phone. Yes, from the outside it seems that he is nothing (especially in the video, pictures), but feel him in your hand, and maybe you will fall in love with him like me. Of course, this design may not be for everyone, but for me it is beautiful. Clear, smoothed corners, all parts as a whole. I want to say bravo to the engineers and designers from Sony. Black is chic and stylish (for men), blue is for young girls (it's good for a walk on the lung, throwing it into the pocket of tight shorts, for example: D). There is enough power and battery for all tasks (anyway, we leave everything to charge our phones at night, no matter what). There is a minus (for someone it may be significant) - the plastic is very easily soiled, it is easily scratched, the phone can slip out of hands (especially if it is clean). Foolishly I bought a plastic case (hard) for it and it scratched the back panel. But despite this, I am very pleased with the purchase. This is one of those things that you can say the following about when you pick it up: wow, I want it! And you rejoice when your wishes come true, like a child. And for some reason, no heavy-duty Chinese or Koreans gave me such an effect. Yes, and a simple Xperia X does not shine and looks faded. It is a pity that Sony thought about stopping the production of such smart phones (sales failure, marketing department does not shine). Come out with a more practical material, and not the current plastic, even if it's more expensive - shut up and take my money.

Compact smartphones with serious stuffing are not so common. One of them can be considered the Sony Xperia X Compact, which appeared in the fall of 2016. Someone even called it the “killer” of the iPhone SE. The device with a 4.6” screen is equipped with a USB Type-C connector, boasts a 6-core processor and a 23 MP camera.

The minimum price that could be found at the time of the creation of the review is $ 487. The regular price is around 500 USD. For the same money, you can now safely purchase last year's flagship from Samsung - Galaxy S6. Let's try to figure out what exactly Sony can offer in return for $ 500.

Appearance, connectors, buttons and sensors

The design of Xperia X Compact inherits the general style of modern smartphones from Sony. At the same time, it has its own individual features (which are also inherent in the flagship Xperia XZ). The appearance meets all the standards of minimalism: there is nothing superfluous on the case. The new design concept "Continuous Surface" consists of rounded edges that smoothly flow into each other. On the front panel, this is facilitated by 2.5D glass. It turns out a neat brick, which just asks for a hand.

Interesting body colors have been added: smoky blue, snow white and space black (more like a dark shade of blue).The product is made of plastic, but thanks to a special coating, the back panel has a ceramic glossy sheen.

On the bottom edge there is a symmetrical USB Type-C 2.0 connector, on the top edge there is a 3.5 mm audio jack. On the left side, under the plug, there is a tray that holds one SIM card and a USB flash drive.

On the right side, a large power button is striking, in which a fingerprint sensor is mounted. A little lower is the volume rocker, and a separate button for taking photos and videos.

The lower and upper ribs received a flat rectangular surface. As a result, taking into account the modest height of the case (129 mm) and a noticeable thickness (9.5 mm), the device can be placed on the table in an upright position. The gadget fits perfectly in the hand: its width is 65 mm, and it weighs only 135 g.

CPU

The Sony Xperia X Compact is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 8956 processor. It has six 64-bit cores. Of these, 2 are "fast" Cortex-A72 with a frequency of 1.8 GHz. Another 4 Cortex A53 cores operate at a frequency of 1.4 GHz. The Adreno 510 video chip is responsible for graphics processing. At the moment, the Snapdragon 650 is not considered a top-end processor. However, it has a significant performance margin.

In Antutu 6, the device scores about 76 thousand points. It copes equally well with both typical everyday tasks and with the launch of "heavy" games. HD screen resolution does not create a large load on the video chip, so you can safely play at medium graphics settings.

Memory

The smartphone received a solid amount of RAM: 3 GB. It seems that this is even more than necessary for this "baby". You can open a whole bunch of tabs in the browser, run several applications at the same time - for the Sony Xperia X Compact, this is not a problem.

Built-in memory is also a lot: 32 GB. It is clear that there will be a little less free space. But the manufacturer took care of supporting memory cards up to 256 GB.

Offline work

Battery capacity - 2700 mAh. Not bad for a small smartphone. With low loads, it can work for 2-3 days. If you actively use the device in mixed mode, the charge is confidently enough for the whole day. A real test showed that the X Compact is able to work for 14 hours of talk time (in a 3G network). Or 11.5 hours of web surfing.

Separately, it is worth mentioning the proprietary energy saving settings: Stamina and Ultra Stamina. If the first mode deactivates the most “gluttonous” functions of the smartphone, then the second one leaves only the basic functionality. As a result, significant battery savings. Adaptive charging technology is also implemented. In short - it automatically adjusts the parameters of replenishment of power, and controls the electrochemical processes in the battery. This contributes to a significant extension of battery life.

Camera

1. Predictive hybrid autofocus. Follows a moving subject so that the picture is clear and not blurry.
2. Laser autofocus. Determines the distance to the object, helps to quickly focus on it in low light.
3. RGBC-IRi sensor. Able to capture infrared waves, is responsible for the most correct selection of white balance. As a result - the correct color reproduction without unnecessary headaches.

The smartphone will appeal to those who need to take a picture "here and now." When you press the shutter button, it “wakes up” and is ready to shoot in 0.6 seconds. Finished images are processed quickly. Manual settings are provided (you can adjust the shutter speed, manually focus, etc.).

In good light, the resulting photographs are very detailed. The color reproduction is really close to natural. However, the camera falls short of the quality of the current year's flagships. For example, when studying pictures in detail, you can notice blurry areas along the edges of the frame. And in scenes with a very bright light source, the frame may turn out to be overexposed.

Video is recorded in FullHD resolution with a frame rate of 30 and 60 FPS, as well as with stereo sound (2 microphones and a noise reduction system are used). Alas, 4K resolution is not supported. When recording video with trembling hands, the five-axis SteadyShot stabilization system comes in handy.

The front camera received a 5 MP wide-angle module. It does not differ in anything special, but it allows you to get quite acceptable photos with a good level of lighting.

Display

The screen is small (4.6 inches), but high quality. With such a modest diagonal by today's standards, it has a solid HD resolution (1280 x 720). Made with Triluminos and X-Reality technologies. The first is designed to create a rich color palette by better displaying green, blue and red colors. The second makes the image more colorful, saturated, contrast and clear.

The display has a high margin of brightness, so in sunny weather there will be no problems with the visibility of the image. Corning Gorilla Glass is used to protect against scratches. The touchscreen recognizes 10 touches at the same time.

Networking

Only one Nano SIM can be installed. Supported networks: 2G/3G/4G. Available wireless modules NFC, Bluetooth 4.2, WiFi a/b/g/n/ac (2.4 + 5 GHz). There are also GLONASS and GPS (A-GPS) navigation modules. All communications work perfectly.

A very interesting device, despite the crazy price tag. The Sony Xperia X Compact is packed full of features, some of which just didn't fit in this review. And even if not all the features will be really interesting to the user, but the model clearly stands out against the background of total uniformity in "smartphone construction". In addition, 4.6-inch smartphones with a fingerprint scanner and 3 GB of RAM are now rare.

The Xperia Compact family at one time made a lot of noise - about two or three years ago, when people were not yet used to standard "more than five inches", and companies almost without exception stopped releasing anything less, it came in handy. Today, 5.5 inches is the norm, and the category of ceiling phablets includes devices with screens from six inches (it's scary to think, at one time the first Galaxy Note with a diagonal of 5.3 inches was considered a phablet).

In general, it seems that the time of the kids is irretrievably gone. But that's why we love Sony, that the Japanese company does not always follow trends, trying to preserve traditions. Sometimes, however, it smacks of corporate sluggishness, and sometimes it turns out to be a breath of fresh air in a world of identical decisions. What is more in the Sony Xperia X Compact?

Mini X has as much in common with the title model of the series as with the new flagship - Xperia XZ. However, Compact smartphones consistently received very powerful stuffing - small in this case did not mean weak. But just in X Compact, the tradition of putting the flagship system on a chip was violated - it works on the basis of a mid-range platform, Qualcomm Snapdragon 650, the same as in Xperia X. At the same time, the design and camera of the compact version are common with the XZ. Let the materials used and simpler - the case is not metal, but plastic. The diagonal of the display remains the same as that of the previous "compact" - 4.6 inches.

The Sony Xperia X Compact, as I noted above, is made according to the same Loop Surface design code as the Xperia XZ - with edges that visually flow into one another, the same bend of the front panel and back, curved side panels, but absolutely flat top and bottom. At the same time, the general impression that appeared when looking at the Z5 Compact was preserved - the novelty also seems too thick. And this is not an illusion: nine and a half millimeters - we have not seen this for a long time.

Another solution that can cause controversy is the use of glossy plastic. Smartphone manufacturers seem to have already stopped mocking the public and are no longer trying to embellish reality in a stupid way - special type of polycarbonate the material used here is nobody's calling. Plastic is just plastic. And, for my taste, it looks quite good, although the white X Compact is suggestive of Chinese crafts from the 2000s. At a time when even the same Chinese manufacturers of budget smartphones are lining their devices with metal, such a decision seems bold, turning everything upside down.

But the white version is very convenient if you are not too fond of carrying cases or constantly wiping down your gadgets. Glossy plastic is generally a very easily soiled material, but in this case nothing is noticeable, the smartphone will look like new for a very long time.

The main reason for which the X Compact, in fact, was created is the dimensions. The usual stamped phrases about the convenience of controlling with one hand look here more than ever. If suddenly a person who is accustomed to the iPhone (but despised the Plus version) wants to switch to Android, then climbing over to the "compact" will probably be the easiest. A normal attitude towards customers ... Further, Bluetooth, as described in the shortcomings, some of the functions do not work, which greatly affects the ergonomics and safety in the car. Support response: it can’t be ... There are all the protocols, maybe your updates are crooked, reset the settings. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO ROLL BACK THE SYSTEM. REFUSE TO UPDATE TO 7. The choice in favor of Sony fell because of the fact that it was checked, and they are so ... The first problem was solved by a third-party dialer, the second one will probably have to come to terms. Announced dimensions of the Sony Xperia X Compact are 129 x 65 x 9.5 mm and weight is 135 grams. In terms of compactness, the phone has no competitors, except for the iPhone SE and iPhone 5s. Interestingly, the screen diagonal of a small iPhone is only 4 inches, while the X Compact has a much larger 4.6, but at the same time they do not differ much in size. Sony's mini-flagship is only half a centimeter taller and wider, plus noticeably thicker. That is, with the Xperia X Compact, you get a larger display in almost the same compact body. The body of the novelty is me.. no, plastic, which already seems unusual against the backdrop of the popularity of metal smartphones. We did not like this glossy plastic, which can quickly lose its presentation. It's also a little sad to see the lack of water protection that this line of mini flagships has always had.

Let's see how all this abundance will work in practice, usually Sony for some reason does not bring the cameras of mobile devices to the maximum of their capabilities.

As for the front camera, it received 5 MP and a good-sized 1/3 ″ sensor, which corresponds to the main cameras of mid-price smartphones, for example, Meizu m3e.

The performance of the Sony Xperia X Compact also promises to be quite high due to the new stuffing, 3 GB of RAM and a low screen resolution. Formally, the phone uses a mid-range chipset, a six-core Qualcomm Snapdragon (four Cortex-A53 cores at 1.4 GHz and two Cortex-A72 cores at 1.8 GHz). On the one hand, it’s a pity that for “compacts” they now feel sorry for the top stuffing (in Z1 Compact, Z3 Compact and Z5 Compact it was “uncompromising” for its time), but on the other hand, it’s still more than enough for smooth operation and most tasks. In addition, the same chipset is used in the Sony Xperia X with a sharper display, and in various benchmarks it shows scores comparable to the LG Nexus 5X, which can not be called slow.
