Non-removable

Last fall, TCL unveiled a new line of devices from the Alcatel OneTouch (now just Alcatel) brand - Go. It includes bright protected devices. The first was the Go Play smartphone with checkered covers and protection from water, dust and drops. Now the device is sold in the official online store of the brand at a price of 10,990 rubles (but you can find it cheaper). Does the device have strengths beyond survivability and design? We have studied the Alcatel OneTouch Go Play 7048X in detail and are ready to answer this question.

Technical Alcatel specifications OneTouch Go Play 7048X:

Complete set and design

The Alcatel OneTouch Go Play comes in a colorful box. Inside you can find the smartphone itself, documentation, a charger (5 V, 1 A), a USB cable, headphones with interchangeable nozzles and an extraction needle SIM slots and microSD. The smartphone is available in eight colors: white-blue, yellow-blue, black-red, black-gray, two blue-green-orange, white-orange-blue and red-pink-yellow. The descriptions, I think, are completely incomprehensible, it is better to see the assortment on the renders on the Alcatel website. Note that not all options are sold in Russia.

I got the yellow-blue Go Play for the test. It has the ends, camera bezel, dots on the back cover, the Alcatel OneTouch logo and the go inscription in yellow, and the base of the back cover is blue. The front panel is white, which is the same color as most Go Play variations. From behind, the smartphone looks unusual, cool, even defiant, but the front panel is as ordinary as it can be. The back and sides of the smartphone are rubberized, thanks to which it is not slippery at all. Considering the positioning of the model as a device for crazy entertainment, this is important.

All ports and slots are covered with caps; in the case of microSD and SIM, trays that can be removed with a needle are hidden behind them. The design is inconvenient, but I don’t think that it will annoy you often; after all, during normal use we rarely take out and remove SIM-ki and memory cards. The buttons under the screen have an LED stand, in the left upper corner there is dim led indicator.

There are no complaints about ergonomics, the smartphone is quite comfortable despite the wide frames (apparently, they are needed to ensure water resistance and shock resistance). The assembly is also excellent, there are not even any hints of cracks, creaks, backlashes and other disgrace. I did not drown the smartphone and I do not advise you: in warranty card of course, this is not prohibited, but it is stated that "The warranty does not apply to<...>f. defects caused by negligence, improper use of the equipment, violation of the operating conditions set forth in the operating instructions ", and the operating instructions prescribe to protect the phone" from the effects of adverse external conditions(humidity, rain, liquid getting inside, dust, sea air, etc.) "However, after taking pictures in the rain, the smartphone is alive and well, but it's still better not to experiment if you don't want to spend money on repairs.

The 5 "screen of the smartphone has a resolution of 1280x720 pixels. Its disadvantages include a bias in cold shades, a slightly pale color rendition and a noticeable inversion under slopes. However, for an inexperienced user, the latter will not be a problem, and 294 ppi, high maximum brightness and five-point multitouch will allow smartphone without negative emotions. A wet screen correctly recognizes touches, this is a plus. Despite this, there is a "underwater shooting mode" in which the smartphone is completely disabled touch screen... The oleophobic coating is present, but the finger does not slide like on glass, but like on plastic.

Software

Alcatel OneTouch Go Play is based on the Android 5.0.2 Lollipop operating system, wireless updates are supported, one minor update even flew to me. The system is not presented naked, but with a proprietary TCL shell. Most of the changes include redrawing the icons and row of menus, as well as the addition of a OneTouch Stream desktop that provides news, weather, apps, and wallpapers. It is also worth noting the ability to launch applications directly from the lock screen; there are five shortcuts at the bottom of the screen. Supports wake-up with a double-tap, reject a call and snooze the alarm by flipping the smartphone.

The firmware is abundantly supplied software, in total, fifty-nine programs are preinstalled on the smartphone (thirteen of them can be deleted). Here are games from Gameloft, and clients of many social networks, and instant messengers, and a tool for capturing video from the screen (with which the smartphone starts to slow down noticeably), and a tool for synchronizing with a PC Smart Suite, and third party stores applications "Application Center" and "Game Center", and much more.

preinstalled apps

Camera

The Alcatel OneTouch Go Play is equipped with an 8MP autofocus camera. The camera app interface is extremely minimalistic, but there is manual mode, in which you can adjust white balance, focal length, shutter speed and ISO value. The photos are pleasing, the amount of noise is low, the colors are reproduced naturally. True, to get clear shots, you need to have steel hands and try not to move in difficult conditions, and the automation from time to time likes to overestimate the exposure, which is easy to correct with touch focus. But in any case, for a smartphone of this level, Go Play worthy camera.

Front camera with a resolution of 5 megapixels and constant focus is capable of producing high-quality selfies. Personally, I expected the worst. Rate:

With video ( [email protected]) the situation is not so rosy, the sound is captured quietly and echoingly (a consequence of water protection). Plus, the shade of the frames "walks", sometimes the reddish frames alternate with the normal ones. The problem is the same as with photographs, its roots are clearly programmatic, I hope TCL can fix it.

Performance and benchmarks

The Alcatel OneTouch Go Play smartphone is based on a 64-bit quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 chipset with a frequency of 1.2 GHz, including an Adreno 306 video accelerator. The amount of RAM is 1 GB, the built-in memory is 8 GB. The abundance of built-in applications negatively affects how much of this wealth is available to the user - after the first activation, it is only 537 MB and 3.3 GB, respectively. I think this will not be enough for most, but here a memory card can come to the rescue. It can be selected as the default medium, applications can be transferred to it (even preinstalled ones).

Alcatel Go Play - Smartphone for quality communication

01.04.2016

I thought, I thought, yes I sold my Samsung Galaxy A5, which I previously wrote a review about, he bothered me. And in order to take the time to choose something more serious, and not be left without communication, I ran through the salons and bought the first thing that I liked and liked from inexpensive smartphones without first reading reviews and reviews. Chose within 10 tr. In general, melancholy-sadness, there is nothing sensible. I almost bought a Microsoft Lumia 550, but I don’t already have confidence in the mobile division of Microsoft, after the massive scam with the WP 8.1 update to WM 10. I liked the Alcatel Go Play, and bought it for 9990 rubles.

What did you like? Well, firstly, an unusual design that stands out against the background of the same devices. Secondly, I won over the excellent oleophobic coating of the display, thereby allowing not to glue the glass with this very coating. Thirdly, Go Play is positioned as a rugged smartphone that is not afraid of water, dust and drops. And I have not had anything like this for a long time after the Samsung Galaxy Xcover 5690. Specifications? Well, they are budgetary, that is, that is. So, on board:

  • Snapdragon 410;
  • 1 gigabyte of RAM;
  • 8 gigabytes of internal memory;
  • display IPS 5 "1280x720;
  • battery 2500 mAh, non-removable;
  • camera 8 MP;
  • LTE support is present.

The package bundle is the most standard, nothing more.

The only unusual thing is that there are two sets of ear pads available for vacuum headphone, and one of them is of some unusual shape (for scuba diving, or what, is it intended?), but since I don’t use vacuum headphones, I didn’t even unpack it.

In fact, the Go Play is nothing more than the Alcatel One Touch 7044X POP 2 Premium, the characteristics are completely the same, except that the POP 2 is not secure and costs less - in the same store where I bought the Play, the POP 2 it cost either 6990 or 7990, I don't remember exactly.

In the course of the review, I will compare Play with where there is something to compare.

The theater starts from the coat rack, and the smartphone starts from the body. And the Play's body is very good.

In addition to the unusual design, it is also assembled tightly and without the slightest backlashes. The back cover is somewhat reminiscent of a soft-touch, the smartphone is grippy and does not try to slip out, and it is not easily soiled. By the way, in reality, the color is much more red than in the photographs, there is no orange that somehow turned out. The volume rocker and the power button are located exactly where they should be - on the right side of the case. At the bottom of the rear panel is the only ringer speaker:

At the top there is a 3.5 headphone jack covered with a waterproof plug, as well as a microphone used to operate the noise cancellation system:

At the bottom there is a micro-USB connector, covered with a flap, and the main microphone. OTG this connector does not support:

On the left side there is a combined slot for a SIM card and a memory card, which is closed with a common cap:

There is only one SIM card in Play, nano-SIM format. To remove the tray, both for a SIM card and for a memory card, you need to press the included paper clip into the small holes under the cap, the trays slide out slightly, and they can be hooked and pulled out:

About waterproofness and shock resistance. Honestly, I haven’t checked it and I’m not going to do it on purpose. I believe that such protection assumes an accidental fall into water or hit of a smartphone in pouring rain, but in no way special and deliberate attempts to check the tensile strength of the device. Although, I washed the same 5690 Xcover with soap under the tap, and he got nothing from these procedures. But that was a necessity. Indirectly, I checked the presence of tightness using one of the programs for monitoring the activity of sensors, in this case, an atmospheric pressure sensor was used.

Experiments have shown that when a smartphone is squeezed with all the plugs closed, the pressure sensor readings begin to increase, which means that the tightness is present. Also, the pressure readings increase if you squeeze the smartphone with open micro-USB and 3.5 plugs, but the readings do not change when you open the SIM card slot cover. Consequently, the USB and 3.5 connectors are hermetically sealed from the environment, in addition to the plugs, apparently also by the internal design, but the slots for the SIM card and memory card are not. Accordingly, the only way that water can get inside the smartphone is a loosely closed or completely open plug of the SIM card.

Unfortunately, the tightness design, apparently, is not well thought out, and this is the reason for one proprietary problem that Play is prone to - the wheezing of the ringing speaker. The speaker itself is quite powerful, but due to the tightness, something like resonance occurs from time to time, that is, the speaker membrane simply has nowhere to push the air to reproduce sound, and it starts to rattle. Something like this, I hope I correctly understood the mechanics of this phenomenon. This phenomenon is treated by opening the SIM card plug, the pressure is leveled, the wheezing disappears. The unpleasant thing is that this can arise at any moment.

Yes, also about the sound of the speaker. As I already wrote, it is powerful enough, but for some reason it tries to pretend to be a music center and reproduce all the basses that are fed to it, instead of cutting off the low frequencies. Because of this, tunes with a lot of low frequencies overload and clog the speaker. It is better to use tunes with medium and high frequencies.

Display. It would seem that the most common 5-inch IPS with only HD-resolution ...

But after the fierce riot of colors and pentail that were characteristic of the A5 display, at first I could not get enough of the clarity of the picture and natural colors. Finally, there is no such friability of small fonts, and - hurray! - finally, a normal oleophobic coating, on which the finger glides easily and naturally, and the glass is easily cleaned with a cloth. Let me remind you that the "fashion" Galaxy A5 has practically no oleophobic coating, and to compensate for this drawback, I had to glue a protective glass, which has at least some oleophobicity. Play has complete order with oleophobicity.

Of course, the black here is not as black as the A5, but the white is really white, and not the dirty gray that is typical for AMOLED displays. The brightness is more than enough, the display does not fail even on a bright sunny day. The automatic brightness control algorithm works well and responsively, while the A5 has the impression that there were, at most, three brightness levels, between which it switched, and not always successfully. And yes - IPS does not fade over time, unlike AMOLED. There is a notification LED above the display, it is not visible in the photo.

The control buttons are not on-screen and are backlit:

Camera. There is nothing special to say about it, except that the budget 8 megapixels are not bad, in my opinion, they shoot during the day, but fail at night. I did not like the stock Camera application for its primitiveness and lack of flexibility in settings, so I use the Snap Camera application, which is much more convenient and with the possibility of many manual settings. Sample images were taken in 6 megapixel resolution - crop still won't show anything interesting, but 6 megapixel is a wide format, picture in full screen:

Connection. In this respect, Play pleasantly surprised me. The fact is that in places with poor network coverage, my previous A5 often fell into 2G, but I did not attach much importance to this, with the exception of one case when the difference between A5 and SGS3 Neo of my brother was too obvious, which I wrote about in the review. But the fact is that in those places where the A5 only caught 2G, Play confidently holds 3G, and, what is most incredible, it even manages to catch 4G! - although I did not even imagine that LTE works in those places.

In general, Play gets a clear credit for this parameter!

But with the sound of the voice speaker, not everything is so simple (c). On Beeline and Tele2, the voice of the interlocutor is heard simply amazingly, clearly, cleanly, in the ear, and not in all directions, as was the case with the A5, but on MTS, for some reason, the volume is reduced, and significantly. But with the A5 it was the same, so I blame the operator. I left a request with the support service, it may be corrected.

Battery. 2500 mAh is not such a big number for Play to set records for autonomy, it does not. Nevertheless, it holds, offhand, 20 percent better than the A5 battery. On the one hand, this is most likely due to a slightly higher figure - 2300 mAh for the A5 versus 2500 for the Play, and on the other hand, the A5 keeps the network noticeably worse, and this may be due to the increased power consumption of the radio module. And one more nuance - in the statistics of energy consumption of the A5 they began to go to the second, or even the first google place Services, and in Play they are somewhere at the very bottom of the list. In general, I agree with lazex, who wrote the following in his Note 5 review:

“Generally speaking, in our time to talk about the autonomy of this or that apparatus is a completely thankless task. There are still no precise universal methods for determining, and each person has his own scheme of use. This is superimposed on the different functioning of mobile networks in different cities, which also significantly affects the lifetime of a single charge.

You can somehow focus on the screen time, but here again there can be no objectivity, phones are used in different ways and at different brightness.

As a matter of principle, I will not give here a single graph from the "Battery - Screen Time" section for the simple reason that there is simply nothing to learn from them. Again, each has its own scheme of use. I can easily make the screen work schedule for 2.5 hours, and I can even for 18 hours - no problem, any whim for your money. "

  • Inexpensive youth device with shock, water and dust resistance

Among the products of "classic" smartphone manufacturers, which are not specifically focused on the manufacture of secure devices, it is still quite rare to find a mobile device that has not been forgotten to add protection against water and dirt. This is how this market works. Although, if you think about it, what if not mobile gadgets that constantly turn in their hands on the street in any weather, it is imperative to have such protection! After all, they are constantly dropped, often in puddles and mud, glass cracks, and you have to spend a lot of money to replace them. Water penetrates into the housings, closes electrical circuits, damages microcircuits, incapacitates our pocket assistants, but the manufacturer, by and large, all this is only on hand. So, as before, every smartphone on the market should not expect universal protection, you have to be content with what you have.

And nevertheless, no, no, and some firm will throw a protected model onto the market. This does not happen as often as we would like, but judging by the mood of users, not everyone is concerned about this issue at all, so the manufacturers have completely untied their hands on this matter. They want to - they make a defense, they don't want to - they don't. HTC at one time indulged in and abandoned, Samsung generally translated its protected XCover range to the corporate market, in the open sale of these models it is practically impossible to find. And only one Sony diligently maintains its reputation, although it eventually "broke" forbidding to completely immerse their smartphones into the water.

Against this background, the Chinese completely unexpectedly showed themselves: TCL, which is now engaged in the production of Alcatel OneTouch phones, suddenly released an uncharacteristic secure mobile product, and what a one. Unlike the same Sony, the creators of the Alcatel OneTouch Go Play smartphone, which will be discussed today, do not prohibit completely immersing their device in water. Moreover, like Sony in the old days, Alcatel even offers to shoot a selfie with its smartphone underwater, drown it, drop it from a height, take it with you to the sandy beach and do almost anything with it.

    />

The smartphone itself is not very advanced in terms of specifications, but its "physical" capabilities may attract many. Moreover, Go Play is designed for a youth audience, and therefore the company tried to make the device as accessible as possible. Even with the current price realities, the cost of certified Go Play in official retail does not exceed the level of 10 thousand rubles, which makes the novelty even more attractive, especially given the fairly high quality level of production at TCL.

    Contents of delivery

The Alcatel OneTouch Go Play comes in a large rectangular box made of hard cardboard with a matte finish. The packaging is soundly made, with attention to detail, attractively designed, there is no clumsy in this, it is rather a well-thought-out bright youth style that can be traced, so the colors are in place.

The accessory kit consists of charger with an output current of 5 V, 1 A, a Micro-USB connecting cable, not the worst wired stereo headset with in-ear rubber ear pads with additional sports attachments, as well as a metal key and several thin paper books with information.

    Appearance and usability

Smartphone Alcatel OneTouch Go Play has an intricate design and unusual materials for the case. There is no usual rigor of forms and hard surfaces, including lacquered or shiny ones. The entire outer part of the novelty's case is made of rubberized plastic with a slight soft-touch effect. That is, it seems as if you are holding a large eraser in your hands, which you can drop on the floor, and it will bounce off of it. And in fact, everything is almost the case: the smartphone is really designed for possible falls from a height of human growth and does not receive damage.

The Alcatel OneTouch Go Play is decorated in a bright, catchy, one might even say, sporty style. The creators do not hide that the model is designed for a youth audience leading an active lifestyle. The back surface of the casing of each device is not only rubberized, but also has a certain rough to the touch texture formed by a lattice pattern applied to the lid. That is, this pattern in the form of a mesh, which is visible in the photo, is also convex to the touch, which is why the smartphone is held in the hand extremely reliably. Not to mention the fact that in terms of design, this is a rather rare design option.

Thanks to the rubberized surfaces and not too large dimensions, the smartphone is quite comfortably held in the palm of your hand, and does not slip out even from wet fingers. This is quite important, since the creators are positioning the novelty as permanent mobile satellite, which is not scary to take with you on any adventures. The smartphone is protected against shocks, falls, dust and water ingress, for which all connectors on the case are tightly closed with covers with rubber gaskets.

The smartphone has received an IP67 degree of protection, and can be completely submerged in water up to a meter deep for half an hour. Now many, including Sony, have switched to the capless option without protective covers on the connectors, but under serious loads, perhaps, with them it is still calmer.

The quality of materials and workmanship does not cause any particular complaints. There are no squeaks, bends of the back cover or crunches during compression, the body gives the impression of a firmly knocked down, reliably assembled product. In practice, the smartphone withstood with honor and falls to the floor from a height of human growth, and water procedures under the tap, and full immersion into a container with water.

Not only connectors for connection, but also slots for installing cards also have protective covers. Under the cover on the left side edge, there are two slots at once, designed for installing one SIM-card in the Nano-SIM format and one memory card. A second SIM card cannot be inserted into the memory card slot. Hot swap supported.

On the opposite side, one under the other, are the hardware volume and power keys. The buttons protrude slightly beyond the surface, but they are easy enough to be found blindly. The stroke is springy and moderately soft, there are no problems with this.

The entire front surface is completely covered by a flat protective glass. In the upper part above the screen, in addition to sensors and a front camera, there is also such a useful element as an LED event indicator. A small, barely perceptible dot in the corner burns with a dim light and is not at all annoying.

It is gratifying that even in such an inexpensive device, the developers were not greedy to install the backlight for the bottom row touch buttons under the screen. This is logical: if you are already making hardware buttons on the case, take the trouble to make them a backlight, but, unfortunately, not all manufacturers follow this simple rule even more expensive devices(Lenovo, ZTE and even LG are guilty of this).

There are no surprises on the back side: a camera module with a flash is installed in the upper part, and a ring loudspeaker grill in the lower part. The camera does not stick out beyond the surface of the case, so the smartphone is stable on the table.

The speaker grill is covered with a twig curved outward. The bulge is small, but this is enough so that the table surface does not overlap the sound of a lying smartphone, there are no problems with that. The vibrating alert is not very powerful, but there are definitely no problems with the sound volume.

An audio jack with a diameter of 3.5 mm for connecting headphones is located at the top end. The hole for the second, auxiliary microphone is located here.

At the bottom there is a universal Micro-USB connector, which, unfortunately, does not support OTG connections. This is one of the disadvantages of this smartphone, but given its more significant advantages, including the ability to connect memory cards, it is quite possible to put up with this.

What this smartphone really lacks is the strap hook. After all, the device is designed for an active lifestyle, it is strange that such a necessary element was forgotten here. As for the colors, here the buyer is greeted with a complete variety: there are as many as eight color combinations of multi-colored covers and side rims, so that everyone can choose for themselves suitable view your own mobile assistant.

    Screen

The Alcatel OneTouch Go Play is equipped with an IPS touchscreen matrix. Physical dimensions the screen is 62 × 111 mm, the diagonal is 5 inches, the resolution is 1280 × 720 pixels, the dot density is 294 ppi.

The bezel around the screen is wide here, you can't argue with that: its width from the edge of the case to the edge of the screen is at least 5 mm on the sides, and from 14 to 18 mm at the top and bottom.

The brightness of the display can be adjusted manually, you can also use the automatic adjustment, which, by the way, is also not always found in budget models (LG is sometimes guilty of this). The multitouch technology here allows you to process 5 simultaneous touches. When you bring the smartphone to your ear, the screen is locked using a proximity sensor. The smartphone screen can be activated by double tapping on the glass, control with wet fingers and gloves is supported - not bad for a smartphone for 10 thousand.

Detailed expertise using measuring instruments conducted the editor of the sections " Monitors" and " Projectors and TV » Alexey Kudryavtsev... Here is his expert opinion on the screen of the test sample.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are not worse than those of the screen Google Nexus 7 (2013)(hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the switched off screens (on the left - Nexus 7, on the right - Alcatel Go Play, then they can be distinguished by their size):

The screen of the Alcatel Go Play is the same dark (the brightness in the photos is 105 for both). The doubling of reflected objects in the Alcatel Go Play screen is weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen (more specifically, between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix) (OGS type screen - One Glass Solution). Due to the smaller number of boundaries (such as glass / air) with strongly differing refractive indices, such screens look better in conditions of strong external illumination, but their repair in the case of cracked outer glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be changed. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating, its efficiency is high, even slightly higher than that of the Nexus 7, so fingerprints are removed much easier and appear at a slower rate than in the case of ordinary glass.

At manual control brightness and when displaying the white field on the whole screen, the maximum brightness value was about 530 cd / m², the minimum - 6 cd / m². The maximum brightness is very high, and given the excellent anti-glare properties, readability even on a sunny day outdoors should be good. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable value. In the presence of automatic brightness control by the light sensor (it is located to the left of the front camera peephole). V automatic mode when the ambient light conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. This function depends on the position of the brightness adjustment slider. If it is 100%, then in complete darkness, the automatic brightness adjustment function reduces the brightness to 110 cd / m2 (too light), in an office illuminated with artificial light (about 400 lux) it sets to 350 cd / m2 (too much), in very in bright surroundings (corresponds to illumination on a clear day outdoors, but without direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or slightly more) increases to only 380 cd / m² (it could have been brighter). The brightness slider is 50% - the values are as follows: 6, 150 and 270 cd / m² (only the average value is suitable for the conditions), at 0% - 6, 14 and 50 cd / m² (a bit dark). In general, the automatic brightness adjustment function does not work quite adequately, the reason is the underestimated values from the light sensor, which, when changing to a bright light, can generally give out the minimum illumination values. Only on the most low values the brightness of the backlight appears significant modulation, but its frequency is very high - about 40 kHz - so there is no visible screen flicker.

This smartphone uses a matrix IPS type... On the micrograph, if desired, you can see the subpixel structure typical for IPS:

For comparison, see photomicrograph gallery screens used in mobile technology.

The screen has good viewing angles without a significant color shift even with large gaze deviations from the perpendicular to the screen and without inverting (except for the darkest when deviating along one diagonal) shades. For comparison, we present photographs in which the same images are displayed on the screens of Alcatel Go Play and Nexus 7, while the brightness of the screens was initially set to about 200 cd / m2, and the color balance on the camera was forcibly switched to 6500 K. The white field is perpendicular to the screens:

Note the good uniformity of brightness and color tone of the white field. And the test picture:

The color saturation is moderately high, but the color balance is clearly shifted towards the blue-green area. Now at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors did not change very much on both screens, but on the Alcatel Go Play the contrast decreased to a large extent due to the strong black lightening. And white box:

The brightness at an angle of the screens decreased (at least 5 times, based on the difference in exposure), but Alcatel Go Play screen, despite the appearance of the shade, it is still lighter. The black field, when deviated along the diagonal, is lightened strongly and acquires a violet or red-violet tint. The photos below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is the same!):

    And from a different angle:

When viewed from a perpendicular view, the uniformity of the black field is good, albeit imperfect:

The contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is high - about 1100: 1. The response time for the transition black-white-black is 14 ms (7 ms on + 7 ms off). The transition between gray tones of 25% and 75% (based on the numerical value of the color) and back takes 24 ms in total. The gamma curve, plotted using 32 points at equal intervals in terms of the numerical value of the shade of gray, did not reveal a blockage in either the highlights or the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.20, which is equal to the standard value. In this case, the real gamma curve slightly deviates from the power dependence:

We did not reveal the presence of dynamic adjustment of the backlight brightness in accordance with the nature of the displayed image, which is very good.

The color gamut is close to sRGB:

The spectra show that the matrix filters mix the components together to a moderate extent:

As a result, colors have natural saturation and hue. Grayscale balance is medium. The color temperature is not much higher than the standard 6500 K, but the deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) is more than 10 units, which is considered a bad indicator even for a consumer device. However, in this case, the color temperature and ΔE do not change much from shade to shade - this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of the color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance there is not very important, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

To summarize: the screen has a very high maximum brightness and has good anti-reflective properties, so the device can be used outdoors even on a sunny summer day. For conditions of complete darkness, you can set a comfortable level of brightness. It is acceptable to use the automatic brightness control mode, but this function may not work well in bright light. The advantages of the screen include an excellent oleophobic coating, no air gap in the layers of the screen and no flicker, high contrast, color gamut close to sRGB and good - in visual assessment - color balance. As a significant disadvantage, we attribute the low stability of black to the deviation of the gaze from the perpendicular to the plane of the screen. Taking into account the importance of characteristics for this particular class of devices, the screen quality can be considered high.

    Sound

The Alcatel OneTouch Go Play sounds surprisingly good for its level. Both in the headphones and in the speaker, the sound is bright, saturated with all frequencies, lows are present, the volume reserve is sufficient for any environment. The vibration alert is weak here, so a high maximum volume level is even more important. There are also no complaints about the purity of the sound, no distortions are heard in the conversational dynamics, the voice of the familiar interlocutor remains recognizable.

To play music, a proprietary player called Mix is provided with the functionality music center and even with the ability to combine music tracks in DJ mode. You can sync tracks, make smooth mixing, add audio effects, delete and re-record your compositions. Curious that different modes Operations with the player depend on the position of the unit: to work in DJ mode, the horizontal position of the smartphone is used, we have already met all this earlier in smartphones of the Idol 3 series.

The device is not able to record telephone conversations from the line by standard means. FM-radio is present in the smartphone, when good quality reception sounds acceptable.

    Camera

Alcatel OneTouch Go Play is equipped with two modules digital cameras with a resolution of 8 and 5 megapixels. The front module has a sensor with a resolution of 5 megapixels and optics with an f / 2.3 aperture with a fixed focus. There is not much to praise the quality of the camera here, it is very modest.

The main camera received an 8-megapixel sensor with an f / 2.0 aperture lens. Autofocus is not very fast, but almost no mistakes. The LED flash is not very bright, it only consists of one segment.

The shooting control menu is simple and logical, all settings are combined into a single list, and additional modes, such as HDR, panoramic, auto-retouch and a code scanner, are triggered by a side swing. There is also a manual mode in which you can change ISO, shutter speed and set the white balance. Transfer control of camera settings third-party applications you cannot use the Camera2 API, there is no RAW recording option either.

The camera can shoot video in maximum resolution up to 1080p, there is an electronic stabilization function. In general, the camera copes with video shooting average, there are no jerks, sticking or artifacts in the image, but the image itself is dark, loose, the color rendition also leaves much to be desired. Although the camera records sound quite well. No noticeable distortions of sound were detected, the noise reduction system in general copes with its tasks adequately.

The camera can be called good. Sharpness leaves much to be desired in places, but generally remains acceptable, especially when shooting close-ups. Even indoors, the camera does relatively well. Nevertheless, even in good lighting, a lot of artifacts appear in the pictures, so the camera is clearly not suitable for artistic shooting, but it will quite cope with an undemanding documentary.

    Telephone part and communications

The Alcatel OneTouch Go Play smartphone works as standard in modern networks 2G GSM and 3G WCDMA, and also has support for LTE Cat.4 networks with theoretical maximum speed up to 150/50 Mbps. With FDD LTE smartphone can work in all three of the most common Russian operators bands Band 3, 7 and 20. In general, there are no special complaints about the quality of reception of cellular networks, but the speed of work with LTE was a little surprised. In practice, with the MTS operator's SIM card, the device confidently registered and worked in LTE networks in the Moscow region, but the speed never exceeded 10 Mbit / s. Although at the same test site, most modern devices easily deliver from 25 to 40 Mbit / s.

Rest networking opportunities smartphone are minimal: NFC no, only one Wi-Fi band (2.4 GHz) is supported, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi Display, can be arranged wireless point access via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth 4.0 channels. Micro-USB 2.0 does not even support OTG connectivity.

The navigation module works with both GPS (with A-GPS) and domestic Glonass... The official specifications do not include support for the Chinese Beidou, but judging by test program, the device also saw its satellites. There are no complaints about the operation of the navigation module, the first satellites during a cold start are detected within the first minute. There is a sensor among the sensors of the smartphone magnetic field, on the basis of which the digital compass of navigation programs works.

    OS and software

The device uses a software platform as a system Google android not the most recent version 5.0. The manufacturer slightly modified the shell by adding own themes, widgets, and even gesture controls. The way of unlocking the screen, the way of clearing the menu of the last open programs, the menu for restarting the device have been changed. But these are all just minor improvements that help in work, but do not change the radically familiar interface of the proprietary Android shell.

As for the preinstalled programs, there are enough of them here. The developers have tried to take care of all aspects, from the gaming component to virus protection. True, as usual, most of the preinstalled programs are already free, each of them can independently download from the Play Store. However, there is something more interesting: in the game center application you can find and install games for free that are paid in the Google store, for example, Minecraft. Another unusual thing: Alcatel has installed on its smartphones an application for capturing video from the smartphone screen and then broadcasting it on social networks, young people like this.

    Performance

The Alcatel OneTouch Go Play hardware platform is based on a single-chip SoC Qualcomm Snapdragon 410. The platform is 64-bit, but the 32-bit OS Android 5.0.2 was installed on it. The platform itself is weak, this is an entry-level solution, the capabilities of this SoC are not great. CPU has 4 Cortex-A53 cores, clocked at 1.2 GHz. Graphics processing is handled by the Adreno 306 video processor with a core frequency of 400 MHz. Only 1 GB of RAM is provided in the device, which is frankly not enough for working with Android OS by modern standards. The user has only about 2.8 GB of free flash memory at his disposal, the rest is occupied by the system and applications. The possibility of expanding memory by means of cards is provided, and this is very good, since the device does not support connection external devices in USB OTG mode. But the possibility of installing memory cards really saves: in practice, our test Transcend card Premium microSDXC UHS-1 with a capacity of 128 GB is confidently recognized by the device.

According to the test results, the familiar platform, as expected, showed very low results. See now in AnTuTu results figures in the region of 20K points are surprising, while productive top devices have already approached 80 - 90K. Specialized graphics tests are also not encouraging: the hero's GPU produces only 5 fps, where the others are 25, 30 or even 50 fps. The smartphone is really weak in terms of hardware capabilities, although you can play games on it, only all graphics settings will be at the lowest levels.

Nevertheless, the capabilities of this SoC at the moment should be enough to perform standard tasks, but the Alcatel OneTouch Go Play platform has no headroom for the future, unfortunately.

Testing in the latest versions of complex AnTuTu tests and GeekBench 3:

All the results we got when testing a smartphone in the most fresh versions popular benchmarks, we have tabulated for convenience. Several other devices from various segments are usually added to the table, also tested on similar latest versions of benchmarks (this is done only for a visual assessment of the obtained dry numbers). Unfortunately, within the framework of one comparison, it is impossible to present the results from different versions of benchmarks, therefore, many worthy and relevant models remain behind the scenes - due to the fact that they once passed the “obstacle course” on previous versions of test programs.

Testing the graphics subsystem in gaming tests 3DMark,GFXBenchmark, and Bonsai Benchmark:

When testing in 3DMark for the highest performing smartphones, it is now possible to run the application in Unlimited mode, where the rendering resolution is fixed at 720p and VSync is disabled (which can cause the speed to rise above 60 fps).

    Browser cross-platform tests:

As for benchmarks for evaluating the speed of a javascript engine, you should always make allowances for the fact that the results in them significantly depend on the browser in which they are launched, so that the comparison can be truly correct only on the same OS and browsers, and this possibility is available when testing not always. In the case of Android OS, we always try to use Google Chrome.

    Heat images

Below is a thermal image of the rear surface obtained after 10 minutes of work in Epic Citadel (Guided Tour in Ultra High Quality mode, capricious GFXBenchmark and this time for some reason did not want to start):

It can be seen that the heating is more localized in the upper part of the device, which, apparently, corresponds to the location of the SoC microcircuit. Below you can see the contours of the battery, which heats up a little with an intense discharge. According to the heat chamber, the maximum heating was only 36 degrees (at an ambient temperature of 24 degrees), this is very little.

    Video playback

To test "omnivorous" video playback (including support for various codecs, containers and special features, such as subtitles) most common formats, which make up the bulk of the content available on the Web. Note that it is important for mobile devices to have support for hardware video decoding at the chip level, since it is often impossible to process modern versions using processor cores alone. Also, do not expect a mobile device to decode everything, since the leadership in flexibility belongs to the PC, and no one is going to challenge it. All results are tabulated.

According to the test results, the subject was not equipped with all the necessary decoders that are needed to fully play most of the most common multimedia files on the network. To play them successfully, you will have to resort to help third party player- for example, MX Player. True, it is also necessary to change the settings in it and manually install additional custom codecs, because now this player does not officially support sound format AC3.

¹ sound in MX Video Player was played only after installing an alternative custom audio codec; the standard player does not have such a setting

Further video playback testing was done by Alexey Kudryavtsev.

We did not find the MHL interface, as well as Mobility DisplayPort, in this smartphone, so we had to limit ourselves to testing the display of video files on the screen of the device itself. To do this, we used a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see “ Testing technique for video signal playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices)"). Screenshots with an exposure of 1 s helped to determine the nature of the frame output of video files with different parameters: the resolution varied (1280 by 720 (720p) and 1920 by 1080 (1080p) pixels) and the frame rate (24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 frames / With). In our tests, we used the MX Player video player in the "Hardware" mode. The test results are summarized in the table:

    720 / 30p Okay No 720 / 25p Okay No 720 / 24p Okay No

Note: If both columns Uniformity and Skips green ratings are set, this means that, most likely, when watching movies, artifacts caused by uneven alternation and skipping of frames will either not be visible at all, or their number and visibility will not affect the viewing comfort. Red marks indicate possible problems with the playback of the respective files.

According to the criterion for outputting frames, the quality of video playback on the screen of the smartphone itself is good, since frames (or groups of frames) can (but are not required) to be displayed with more or less uniform intervals and, in most cases, without frame drops. When playing video files with a resolution of 1280 by 720 pixels (720p) on a smartphone screen, the image of the video file itself is displayed exactly along the edge of the screen, one to one pixel by pixel, that is, in the original resolution. The brightness range displayed on the screen is standard range 16-235 - all shades are displayed in shadows and highlights.

The rechargeable battery installed in the Alcatel OneTouch Go Play has a capacity of 2500 mAh, which is not so large for modern smartphones. And nevertheless, given the low screen resolution and low-power hardware platform, the hero of the review, as expected, demonstrated a very decent level autonomy. Testing has traditionally been carried out at normal power consumption levels, although power saving mode can also be enabled in the settings.

Continuous reading in FBReader(with a standard, light theme) at the minimum comfortable level of brightness (the brightness was set to 100 cd / m²) lasted more than 17 hours until the battery was completely discharged. When you watch YouTube videos continuously in high quality(HQ) with the same brightness level through home network Wi-Fi the device lasted 8 hours, and in 3D games mode - about 5 hours. The developers themselves promise the smartphone up to 500 hours of standby time, 8.5 hours of talk time, or 40 hours of music without stopping.

From the complete charger, the smartphone is charged for 2 hours 40 minutes with a current of 1A at the beginning of charging and up to 0.3A at the end of charging. In the first hour, the battery is charged by 46%, and the rest of the volume takes up in the remaining 1 hour and 40 minutes. Even from a more powerful third-party charger with an output current of 2 A, the smartphone is charged with the same current of 1 A, that is, the full charging time will still be the same.

    Outcome

As for the price: at the time of writing the review, the Alcatel OneTouch Go Play smartphone is offered in the official Russian retail at a price not exceeding 10 thousand rubles, which is good news. In general, the device is certainly worthy of that kind of money. The smartphone received expressive software outward appearance and reliable in use, nice case with protection from water, dirt and even shock, which in itself is rare. Protected mobile devices in general, they are always strongly overvalued, and it is almost impossible to find among them anything at a price of up to 10 thousand. Here we have a quite high-quality device with an excellent bright screen, impressive sound and a very decent level of autonomy. There is not much to praise the camera for, but it is difficult to expect a truly flagship level of shooting from such an inexpensive device. The camera here, however, is not a failure, you can use it, and this is the main thing. In general, when testing the Alcatel OneTouch Go Play, no defects, flaws or outright hack-work appeared, as is now often found in inexpensive Chinese smartphones from small manufacturers. Here, with the quality, everything is normal, and thanks to its excellent appearance and high degree of security, the smartphone should appeal not only to young people, but in general to everyone who loves to lead an active lifestyle.
