What is digital television?

Before setting it up at home, let's figure out what it is and how it works.

The essence of such a TV is that television picture, as well as sound, is transmitted to a particular device using a digitally encoded audio and video signal via certain channels... With this coding, the signal is transmitted with minimal losses and has much best quality, how analog signal, which is influenced by external factors.

On the other hand, it should be said that with digital television, the TV channel will work either well or absolutely will not work. This TV has no interference or average condition. The only thing is that if the signal is bad, then one or another of the 20 channels will turn off or slow down from time to time. To fix this you will need to turn tv antenna connected to the receiver or directly to the TV, raise it higher or replace it with another.

Potential subscribers often contact us on the website and forum with a request to help them find out if their purchased TVs have the ability to receive satellite TV "directly", with the help of only module and smart card , without buying a special satellite receiver. We will try to understand this issue a little and show how you can use the Internet to determine what their TV set is good for.

To date manufacturers modern residential complexes and plasma panels, as an option, they can equip their receivers with a tuner (card) for receiving satellite TV... These tuners are abbreviated asDVB-S2 or DVB-S (for older models). This is where confusion can sometimes occur, because other tuners with similar names are built into the panel, which have nothing to do with satellite TV. So:

Tuner for terrestrial digital broadcasting called DVB- T 2 or DVB-T (not suitable for us)
- The tuner for cable digital broadcasting is called DVB- WITH(doesn't suit us)
- The tuner for satellite digital broadcasting is called DVB- S 2 or DVB-S (Suitable! Hurray!)

Letter T stands for terrestrial tv, letter WITH cable, and S it's satellite. As you can see, the difference is only in one letter, and the tuners are completely different.

Armed with theory, we will apply this knowledge in practice. Let's check if our TV has support for the DVB-S2 standard. What if you look for this information in the "User's Guide" which is attached to the purchase, no one wants or is lazy? Therefore, on the Internet we go here on this link on Yandex Market ... Let's say with us Samsung TV UE40ES7507 means in search bar enter "Samsung UE40ES7507" and click on "Find", then click on the link "all characteristics".

Now let's see if this model has a satellite tuner. This one is! HOORAY! If there is no tuner, then the line "DVB-S2 support" itself will simply be absent. And right away I want to warn you that, as a rule, DVB-S2 is not embedded in budget TVs.

And now another gift for the laziest, we have already looked for you and below we have compiled a list of the most popular models LCD and plasma panels which have a DVB-S2 satellite tuner on board! Voila;

Of course this is far from full list television receivers having a satellite DVB-S2 tuner, because every year new line and this way the list is updated, so full information it is better to get it in the "operating manual", or go to the manufacturer's website, there is a service that answers questions from its customers, either by phone or by e-mail... And one more thing, even if the desired DVB-S2 tuner is installed on your TV, this does not mean that your TV will work correctly with the module and the satellite operator's card, it may be necessary to update the software (firmware) of your receiver to a newer one, etc. ... Again, such compatibility issues should be resolved on the website of the TV receiver manufacturer, as a rule, these are quite serious corporations and they are loyal to their customers.

Further, in a nutshell, let's say about how this should work (suddenly someone does not know). For example, a DVB-S2 satellite tuner turned out to be installed on your TV, this means that by connecting a cable from a pre-configured to desired satellite antennas (you still can't do without a dish, otherwise some people think that once such a tuner is stuck in their fancy LCD panel, then satellites can be caught on any pin.) So, by connecting the antenna and scanning the satellite through the corresponding menu, you can watch FTA TV channels which broadcast openly, that is, without encoding. If you are satisfied with their quantity and content, please feel free to watch and enjoy. However, such open channels are becoming less and less every year, or they are frankly uninteresting channels such as Tele-shops or in a completely incomprehensible language.

NTV Plus and Tricolor TV , then you can turn your gaze to Continent TV, Rainbow TV, Telecard ... TV channels are broadcast closed; to view them, you need to purchase special CAM modules and smart cards (each operator has their own). We insert the whole thing into a special slot of your TV, register a subscription, a tuned antenna for the desired satellite is also needed (without it anywhere), scan and save the found TV channels and watch!

It would seem that everything ... However, if everything was so smooth, then why then satellite operators Selling Their Recommended Satellite Receivers? Firstly, providers seek to protect themselves from "someone else's hardware" and, accordingly, make money on their own. Secondly, for any changes, be it a change in encoding or input additional services it is enough for them to change software their terminals directly from the satellite. And thirdly, copyright holders also want to protect their programs, films, sports from copying and, in turn, do not allow the operator to show their content using CAM modules... Therefore, for a more or less quiet viewing, it is certainly better to choose a separate recommended equipment, but in any case, the choice is always yours!

Good welcome!

I want to say right away that I am far from an expert in satellite television. All I can boast about is 🙂

Not long ago, I had to choose a TV. I opted for LG 32LN575U. Well, and of course, like everyone, I read reviews, looked in online stores, and noticed in its description the presence of a digital tuner DVB-S2.

I googled a little, and realized that the presence of a digital DVB-S2 tuner allows you to directly connect a satellite dish to the TV and watch satellite TV without a receiver. If we talk in simple words, then DVB-S2 is a satellite tuner built into the TV. As I have satellite TV, it became interesting to me.

Lots of LG TVs (and not only from LG), are equipped with a digital tuner of the DVB-S2 standard. This can be seen in the description specific model... For example, here is a description of the characteristics of the LG 32LN575U TV on the official website:

After the purchase, I of course tested the operation of this digital satellite receiver, which is built into the TV. But, everything turned out to be not as rosy as you might think. If you watch about 70-80 “our” channels (free of charge) through a satellite receiver, then by simply connecting the dish to the TV, you will be able to watch only completely open, not encrypted channels. Among which, I did not find either Ukrainian or Russian (though not really looking).

The thing is that the firmware of our satellite receivers, keys have already been entered that allow you to watch encrypted satellite channels. On the TV, these keys are understandably not wired up. And somehow there is no way to lead them there, or change the firmware. The companies that make these TVs don't need this at all.

You ask, what is this DVB-S2 for then? To watch nobody needs open channels? No, not at all. I think that all TVs that have digital tuner range DVB-S2, support CAM modules... This is a module into which a pay satellite TV card is inserted, and which, in turn, is inserted into the TV, into the slot PCMCIA which looks like this:

The scheme is as follows: you immediately connect a satellite dish to the TV, buy starter pack some satellite TV with a CAM module, and insert the card with the module into the PCMCIA connector of the TV. Start a channel search on the TV (on the satellites that your provider points to you), and see paid ones, closed channels, which are opened using this very card from the provider, which is inserted into the PCMCIA connector of your TV.

This method has several significant advantages. For example, you don't need a receiver to watch satellite TV. And it turns out one remote control, you will control the channels from the TV remote control. It's comfortable.

If you are going to connect some kind of paid satellite TV, then be sure to check with the support whether their CAM modules work on TVs with DVB-S2. And you can check specifically on LG TVs, or by model.

As far as I know, for example, satellite digital television "Lybid TV" (Ukraine) works fine on LG TVs, without a separate tuner. I saw an action in some online store where the Lybid TV starter package comes with LG TVs as a gift (with a CAM module, not a receiver)... They call the module itself “ EXSET CІ CAM“.

Setting up satellite channels (DVB-S2) on your LG TV

I have not connected pay tv, and I do not have a CAM module to show the setting in this example. But I have conventional antenna, to three satellites: Amos, Sirius and Hotbird. The whole thing works, of course, through a separate receiver.

But, I connected the satellite dish directly to the TV (remember, I tested it on LG 32LN575U TV)... I started searching for channels on satellites. The TV found all the open channels, and showed them perfectly. Now I will show everything with an example. Maybe someone will come in handy, and it will be interesting.

To connect a satellite dish, LG TV has a special connector “ LNB Satellite IN“.

As an input source, select Satellite... Push Further.

The next step is to select a satellite and configure it. You can press the button Change satellite setting, in order to tune the satellite on which you want to search for channels. Or press Further to search for channels on an already selected satellite.

If you go to the satellite settings, a window will open with many different settings... As you can see, my signal quality and signal level are almost maximum. This means that my antenna is tuned to the selected satellite. V in this case, it HOTBIRD 13.0E... It is possible to add a satellite, just click on the button Add satellite... You can expose DiSEqC etc.

We close this window, and click Further... We select the search parameters. If you do not have a CAM module, then you can check the box next to the item Skipping encrypted channels... All of you will not be able to watch them. I didn't highlight anything else, and just pressed Execute.

Satellite scan and channel search will start. The general statistics of the scan will be displayed, and the number of found digital satellite channels and the number of radio channels found.

You can stop scanning at any time by pressing the button. Stop... All found channels will be saved.

As soon as the scan is over, or you stop the search, you will immediately go to viewing the found channels.

You can go back to the settings, to the Channels tab. There will already be more items available. Can be done manual setting, sorting the found channels, tuning the satellite, or editing the transponder.

To switch from watching satellite channels, for example, to terrestrial television, or HDMI connector, press the button on the remote control INPUT.
