Download a program to rename photos. Bulk Rename Files in Windows

It is much more convenient to store photo files renamed by the date of shooting. It is easy to navigate when a picture is taken, you can immediately open or copy the desired photos without scrolling through everything and without looking at the thumbnails. The only thing you need is to learn how to rename photos automatically, because renaming each file individually is problematic.

EXIF is Additional Information, which is present in almost every photo. It is automatically added by cameras and, in addition to the date and time, there may be various information– starting with the shooting modes and ending with the coordinates of the shooting location, if this function is supported by the camera.

To work with files, we need a popular file manager Total Commander and an exif plugin for it. With the help of the plugin, we will be able to do exif rename. The plugin can be downloaded from the official website of the program. To install a plug-in, just find it in one of the Total Commander panels and double-click on it with the left mouse button. After that, a window will appear asking you to install in which you need to click "Yes"

Before starting experiments, it is better to copy the photo files from separate folder and work with copies so as not to damage the dear originals of photographs.

Select all photos and select " Bulk Rename

Delete everything from the line “File name mask” Click on the plugin button and choose to use the original date, as shown in the picture. Please note that you need to choose to insert not just a date, but the string “original date”.

In the column "New name" we will see what result we will have in the end.

Naturally, many photos can be with the same date, and all files must have a unique name. Therefore, at the end of the line "Mask for the file name" we add a dash or underscore and similarly to inserting the date described above, add the original time. Separators between the date, month, year and time can be set, but only those characters that can be in the file name. For example, brackets are allowed, but colons are not allowed.

We press the execute button and if there are photos taken in one second, for example, a series of pictures, we get a warning about matching names.

Click "YES" and we get a message that not all files have been renamed. Click “Ok” Agreeing with this.

If there are not many files with the same dates, add _1 to the end of the “File name mask” line and rename it again, then add _2 and so on. To photos from the same time up to a second, the number 1, 2. 3 and so on will be added.

If you have a professional camera and there are many files in the series with the same time up to a second, instead of entering the number manually, you can click the “Counter” button. Then duplicate photos are numbered automatically, but all at once. Those. for example, to the first ten photos with the same date, up to a second will be added from the number from 1 to 10, to the second series already from 11 - 20, etc.

For the lazy, the finished line:
[=exif.DateOriginal.Y-M-D]_[=exif.TimeOriginal.h-m-s]

In addition to renaming files, you can set the date and time from EXIF for file attributes - to change the time of creation and modification.

This is useful when photos have been edited. For example, you shoot in RAW format. After editing in Photoshop or another program, you get a file whose date will naturally correspond to the date of editing.

To set the attributes, select all the files again and select the change attributes command and make the settings as in the picture.

As a result, we automatically changed the name and date of a group of files to the date taken from the EXIF properties of these files.

To quickly find files and quickly navigate through them, it is not enough to put everything in the right folders. It is equally important to give your files easy-to-read and meaningful names. Dealing with each of them individually is counterproductive. Therefore, there are ways to group rename.

To work with a group of files, it is better to copy them to a separate folder. This will greatly simplify the process.

Using regular Windows tools

Changing file names

Consider the simplest case: we have the nth number of images with meaningless titles.

Let's bring the names of these files to a visual form Picture(n), where picture will be the name and n- serial number. This can be easily done right in the "Explorer".

Select all the pictures that we want to rename. To do this quickly, we use the combination Ctrl keys+ A. Then just press F2 or click right click mouse on the first file and select "Rename". As a name for the selected image, enter the word picture and press Enter.

Windows will automatically assign the same name to all subsequent files and arrange all sequential numbers.

If necessary, you can cancel the bulk rename with the Ctrl + Z key combination.

If you want to rename a group of folders in Explorer, you can do it in the same way.

Changing file extensions

Let's say we have some text documents, which, after double-clicking, open with notepad. But we need them to be opened by the browser by default. To do this, you will have to change their extension from .txt to .html. Operations of this kind can be quickly performed using command line.

Click windows keys+ R, enter in the field that appears cmd and click OK - we see the command line window. Now we insert into it the path to the folder in which our files are located, immediately after the command cd: cd C:\Users\Max Volotsky\Desktop\Docs , and press Enter. Then we use special team, which will change their extensions: rename *.txt *.html , and press Enter again.

The first in the command is the original extension, the second is the new one. After entering the command, the system instantly makes changes.

To return everything as it was, you need to reuse the rename command, swapping the extensions.

Using third party utilities

No built-in tools can match the functionality of special programs, designed specifically for batch renaming. You can find many of these on the web. free utilities, just enter bulk file rename in the search.

We will consider renaming using the Bulk Rename Utility program as an example. With its help, it is very convenient to change the names of folders and files, as well as the extensions of the latter.

At the first start, it may seem that the utility interface came straight from hell, and perhaps there is some truth in this. But the user does not need to navigate through numerous tabs and menus: he gets access to all functions from one window.

So, let's say we have a group of audio files that we want to bring to a pleasing look. AT this case Annoyed by the numbers and the lack of the name of the artist.

We launch the application and through the built-in file manager we go to the folder we need. Next, with the already familiar keyboard shortcut Ctrl + A, select all files. We need to remove the first 3 characters at the beginning of the name of each file and add the artist name at the very beginning. For this, we specify required parameters on the Remove and Add panels, then click Rename.

Now let's make all extensions consist of characters in lower case: On the Extension panel, select the Lower option and click Rename.

As you can see, other panels are available in the program window. For example, Numbering allows you to number documents different ways, and using Case you can change the case of characters in file names. Thanks to the New Name column in the built-in explorer, which shows the result of a rename before it is applied, you can easily understand the rest of the Bulk Rename Utility tools.

The last operation with files and folders performed in the program can be easily canceled with the Ctrl + Z key combinations.

Good day to you, my dear friends. So how do you prepare for the New Year? I haven't done everything yet. Anyway. Today is not about that. I remember how I pumped up a lot different pictures from the Internet under one subject. There were the most ordinary pictures, but their names were something like "xuj67hsbs6o9.jpg". In principle, in most cases, I don’t care what these files are called, but if I have to work with them, then it’s better for me that each file has a normal memorable name, otherwise it would take more time and all the work.

Do you know how many files sometimes have to shovel? 100-200-300 files. And they all have a name out of their asses. Therefore, it is easier to rename them in a few seconds and enjoy life, otherwise you live in a mess.

In general, let's see how to rename many files at once in several ways, thanks to which renaming will take no more than a couple of seconds

windows tools

Here I would like to note the simplest and least functional way of group renaming files. But the plus is that you do not need to install any additional programs, and it completely solves our tasks.

Total Commander

In addition to the standard renaming, you can use the popular program link called Total Commander. Maybe someone remembers such an old environment Norton Commander, which was used in our country even before the introduction of windows? Yes, such a shell with directories and files, divided into two sections. Damn, already nostalgia took. Back in 1990-1993, I liked to go to work with my father to play on the computer, and I just had to do everything through Norton Commander ... Damn, I need to stop me, otherwise I’ll go back to my childhood.

So, for Windows there is a similar environment, but only already made under modern interface— Total commander. And by the way, it is still quite convenient to work in it, in addition, it has a number of useful features But I will not teach you how to work with it today, since a separate topic should be devoted to this. But there is one caveat. She is paid. But you are given a month to work in it for free.

Today we will use it for bulk renaming of files.

  1. Download it for example from here and install. Installation is completely standard and simple. Just download the version for your system bit depth. Which one do you have - 32 or 64? You can view this information by right-clicking on the "computer" icon and selecting "Properties".
  2. Enter the program and you will see an interface divided into two windows. Find your folder, where all those files are located, which would not hurt to change the name.
  3. Now select all files. This can be done using the familiar combination CTRL+A or in the main menu at the top, select the "Select" item, and then "Select All". As you can see, all your files in the folder are highlighted in red. If so, then well done. And if it doesn't work, then try again. Anything happens.
  4. Now find "Files" in the main menu and select "Group Rename" from the drop-down list, or press the key combination CTRL+M.
  5. Now you have opened the group rename window. Scary? No need. There is nothing terrible here. Here you are invited to look and choose on what basis to rename files. For example, you can select by date, then each file will be renamed according to the modification date. But I don't like that. It is best to use the "Counter". In this mode, files will be renamed starting from one and in order. But this is by default. And by the way, do not forget, if you want the counter to be certain word(for example, a photo), then you need to enter it into the “mask”.
  6. And if you want to set something of your own, then you need to pay attention to the parameters that are located in the upper right corner of the program window. By default everything is set to "one". Those. the first file is renamed to 1 , and then in order - 2, 3, 4 ,... But we can put not only numbers, but also letters, as reference symbols (True, only Latin ones). To do this, change "Start at..." to "a"(Latin). Then next file will be called b, and then the next c Well, you understand. You can also change the renaming step. The default is 1 , i.e. the following letters and numbers will go alphabetically. But if you put a step - 2 , then they will go to 1,2,3 or a,b,c, but they will be like 1,3,5 or a,c,e. Did you understand? One letter or number will be stupidly skipped.
  7. In general, here you can see all the parameters yourself. It's easy to understand. But when you set everything up for yourself, do not forget to click the "Run" button. After all these manipulations, the files will be renamed in a second and will take on the look you desire.

Well, that's all I wanted to tell you in today's article. There are, of course, many more good programs for renaming, for example Renamer. I even sometimes used it (although there was a slightly different situation there). And so, in general, these two methods should be enough with the head.

Well, if you have to work with files so often, or you just have a lot of important information then I would like to invite you to look excellent video tutorial on file protection from various circumstances (Viruses, deletion, damage, malfunction hard drive, theft, etc.). Described real and great ways Reserve copy and data protection. And all the lessons in video formats and told human language rather than technical, which makes this course great.

Well, for today I finish my article. I hope that the information was useful to you. Thanks for visiting my blog. And, of course, I recommend that you subscribe to my blog updates, then you definitely won’t miss anything interesting. See you in other articles. Bye Bye!

Sincerely, Dmitry Kostin

Vinnie, I have a bunch of photos from my travels left. I would like to rename them all at once. Called by one name, but with different serial numbers. For example, a piglet on the sea-1.jpg, a piglet on the sea-2.jpg, a piglet on the sea-3.jpg ... Advise how to do this? Are there such programs?

Piglet, of course, is. Both programs and utilities. You can batch rename files in the same file manager Total Commander, for example, or using utilities and ReNamer . Yes, there are many more tools. But since you use Photoshop, it will be correct to rename photos in the program Adobe Bridge (Adobe Bridge).

And I have never heard of such a thing. I probably don't have it.

And you open your Photoshop and carefully look at the left top corner. You see to the right Ps the gray icon Br. When you hover over it, it turns brown. This is Adobe Bridge. Well? Do you have it?

Hooray, Vinnie! Turns out I have Adobe Bridge installed! And I didn't notice him.

And I don't seem to have your Bridge. What to do?

Donkey, then you need to install it separately. Or use the free Solid Renamer utility, which I will talk about next time. The main thing is not to despair, you will have a program for the lazy.

And why does he need this Bridge of yours at all?

Adobe Bridge is a powerful photo viewer. But in it you can not only view photos, but also perform preliminary actions with them - rotate, set metadata and much more, and only then open them in Photoshop. But today we’ll talk about batch renaming of photos, which not every owner of Adobe Bridge knows about, and we’ll get acquainted with the rest of the functions of the Bridge another time.

So. We launch Adobe Bridge by clicking on the Br button in Photoshop or on the icon on the desktop.

In the window that opens, as in Windows Explorer, select the folder and open the photos that we decided to rename.

We select all photos through Editing / Select all photos or easier - using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + A. Please note that without selecting all the photos, batch renaming is not possible. It will not be active in the menu. You can select only part of the photos. The main thing is to highlight.

Go to Tools / Batch Rename or use Ctrl+Shift+R

In the middle of the window, do you see "New filenames"? In the fields, we set new photo names, initial numbers and the number of digits in the name (my names will start from 1 to 99, if the photo is larger, choose more numbers on the right) and extension (of course, we need .jpg, so we don’t change it).

Below we see how our photos were previously called and how they will be named after renaming, well, and their number.

Cameras and camcorders save files with names, little speaking to the user about photos and videos. By default, filenames are formed most often from a meaningless set of letters and numbers. File names like IMG2312 or DCIM1978765 among dozens of similar ones in the catalog do not give the user any information about the photo or recorded video. Another thing is the name of files like New_year_2014_123 or Egypt_pyramid_Cheops_456, it immediately becomes clear what information the files store. Free program ReNamer is used to batch rename files using rules, filters and other useful algorithms, is a great tool to automate the file renaming process.

Changing filenames with a list

The program features allow you to rename groups of files using a large number of functions for this operation. To form new file names, the user is required to create rules for renaming. With their help, it is possible to remove a certain set of characters from the file name, insert text, replace characters, insert various meta tags into the file name, transliterate letters in file names, change the case of letters, insert consecutive values (indexing), rename files by mask, use to rename regular expressions and scripts for Pascal language. In addition to files, the ReNamer utility also knows how to rename folders. Before the final renaming of files, the program provides preview result.
