And many other possibilities

SANDBOX.
One new exclusive feature of VirtualDJ 8 is the new sandbox concept. Sandbox is a feature that helps you prepare your next mix while the audience listens to the previous song. While Sandbox is playing, you can go to the end of the current track and try blending into the next track, listening only with headphones, until you find the perfect out and in point of what you want to blend. You can then release the sandbox and quietly wait for your current track to reach the point where you are confident that you should start your new mix.
SAMPLER.
The new sampler in v8 has lost all the restrictions of the old v7. It can now play an unlimited number of samples simultaneously. Samples can be audio, video or image. Video samples can have alpha transparency. Samples can be organized into groups and called up as an instrument bank. Slots can be organized on a grid and have colors and symbols.
Samples are now accessible via Side View, where you can select any bank and drag samples directly into the slots. The sample files themselves are located in the samples folder in the browser. Note that you can also play any sample directly from a folder, meaning you can play many samples at once and don't necessarily need to use a grid if you're more comfortable recalling samples from a list. The sampler also has a special bank called "remix mode". VirtualDJ will automatically detect and fill in break points in your song with remixes, but you can edit your own remix.
When recording a new sampler using either the Record button in the Additional Loops panel or the Record Master or Mic button in the Master Mixer panel, VirtualDJ will save the created sample in the Recordings folder.
SOUND ENGINE.
VirtualDJ 8 has rewritten all internal audio components such as stretch, limiter, equalizers, filters, etc. to harness the power of modern computers and give you crystal clear audio.
The internal audio engine processes everything into high quality 32-bit audio, but the internal frequency can be adjusted in the parameters. Note that we recommend using 44100 if you play mostly audio files that were recorded at 44100 (such as mp3 files) or 48000 if you play mostly high def videos that have audio tracks at 48000. Setting higher levels than the files you are playing will result in lower sound quality.
BROWSER.
The browser in VirtualDJ 8 has many improvements compared to v7.
- SIDE VIEW.
The browser now has three zones: folders, files and Side View. The side view can be displayed and you can easily switch between different useful folders or special lists. Among the special lists are the mix list, karaoke list, notepad, (you can also still have the old horizontal list if you're feeling nostalgic, it's in the advanced options) and trigger-pad samples. But you can drag any folder into the side view to keep it there. You can even create buttons for different folders, so you can easily navigate between them with one click.
VIRTUAL FOLDERS.
Virtual/favorite folders/filters in version 8 can now be children of any other folder. For example, you could have your own D:MusicRoc folder, and inside, create a virtual "Top" folder where you put links to the best songs. You can also make folders filter from other folders, and the filter will apply to the contents of the parent folder.
FILTERS GROUPS.
Now filter folders can have filters, such as "groups by genre". This would create a filter folder that has all child folders of all genres named (from the database if that folder is in the root, or from the parent folder otherwise).
EFFECTS.
The effects page currently no longer replaces the browser, but instead there is a group, just like a playlist. small windows inside this panel will open the effects configuration windows. These effect configurations can also be undocked and become floating windows that can be moved around. Effect selection is now made via the effect button on each deck. The Effect List window can also be a undocked, floating window that allows easy, instant access to multiple effects. To access the effects configuration window, place your mouse cursor over an effect in the list and click on the small gear icon.
Please note that in version 8, effects can now be applied to specific decks, or to the main exit. Go to the Wizard panel in the center of the window to select Effect Wizards.
EDITORS.
Another big new thing in VirtualDJ 8 is that it has many built-in editors.
- AUTOMIX EDITOR.
The Automix Editor allows you to pre-edit your sequence in order to fine-tune your mixes - departure point structure, transition type, and, if you're mixing video, select the video transitions to be used for each mix. When you manually set up a connection between two songs, VirtualDJ will remember and use the correct parameters the next time the automix engine accurately mixes the two songs together.
- TRACK CLEANER.
This editor allows you to easily create "edits" to your tracks. You can remove any of their offensive "addresses" from the song, you can also cut out long intros or unnecessary speech, or loop sections to extend your track.
- VIDEO EDITOR.
The video editor has 2 main uses: It can be used to edit an existing video by adding some text effects on the parts you usually scratch or on the relevant texts. Or, it can be used to add new full video tracks to an existing audio-only song, using video parts from other video files. It can also be used to create a video track for a remixed version using parts from the original version's video tracks.
- SAMPLE EDITOR.
To take advantage of the new sampler in version 8, the sample editor allows you to customize most parameters for your audio, video, or image samples. Now your samples can be from audio, video, or both (or photos), and you can easily adjust video transparency, trim audio clips, and create groups of samples with special trigger modes.
- POI EDITOR (Key Points).
Now all key points, loops, automix points, beat grid anchors, macro points, etc... are called POIs (points of interest) in VirtualDJ 8. The POI Editor allows you to organize and manage all of these points for each of your tracks.
- BPM EDITOR.
The new BPM editor makes it easy and convenient to customize the beat grid of your songs. It even allows you to specify different bpm for different parts within the same song.
- TAG EDITOR.
The tag editor in version 8 is significantly improved over version 7. It can batch edit many tracks together, can save tag files, and is compatible with a wide range of file and tag formats.
SETTING OPTIONS.
The most common options are easily accessible from the selection page in the configuration window, but if you check "show advanced" you will see a complete list of all possible options.
AUDIO CONFIGURATION.
The new audio configuration group is now a hybrid between the "simple" and "advanced" groups from VirtualDJ 7. Large buttons allow you quick access to the most common configurations, while the list below allows you to see how the configuration is actually implemented, and change it in if necessary.
CONTROLLERS.
Controllers can now have multiple maps created and you can easily switch between one or the other. By default, all controllers have a "Factory" map. Once you try to change this default mapping, VirtualDJ 8 will create a "custom mapper" for that controller, populate it with a copy of the default and save it to the Mapper/folders as usual. You can then edit the custom matcher.
CUSTOM BUTTONS.
The default skin has a set of "empty" buttons and custom handles on each deck. These empty buttons are intended to be filled in by each user as needed, according to what they find missing from the default skin.
SKIN SIZE.
In VirtualDJ 8, skins are automatically stretched, so there's no reason to keep making multiple resolutions of the same skin. The stretch is done in such a way that the proportions are maintained (so the pinwheel round will remain a round). To achieve this, part of the browser automatically becomes larger/smaller.
CURRENT CUE.
There is a special POI, the current CUE, which is not editable by the editor. These are the positions of special cues using the Stop and CUE buttons and will be remembered from one session to the next. But it is automatically overwritten every time a new CUE or POI is selected.
SIGNAL COLORS.
VirtualDJ 8 has two modes for signal color (available in options). Either full color with red for bass, green for mids and blue for highs or a 2-color mode which makes it easier to differentiate on deck but is still easy to see bass, mids and highs.
BROADCAST.
VirtualDJ 8 Live Streaming now requires you to be logged into our website, but instead of an IP address for others to connect to, it automatically creates a web page at virtualdj.com where your friend can listen to the broadcast. This page will have a built-in html5 player and links for winamp/itunes/wmp etc. streams. VirtualDJ 8 also offers podcast creation and maintenance for you, with tools on the website to help you publish your mix to iTunes, etc.

In addition to the well-known big brands in the digital DJing market (Native Instruments, Serato and Ableton), there are a large number of less popular programs that compete for attention. Most of them have noticeable advantages - a good price, flexible options or a unique operating principle.

10.PCDJ Dex

Along with the standard features, you'll get a mixer, effects, equalizers, and more from this software package, as well as two Dex features that make it amazingly flexible - a built-in video mixer and karaoke support.

In terms of regular DJ functions, the application provides four virtual decks with rhythm synchronization and key matching. In addition, there is a sample player and a looping tool.

Dex software supports a fairly wide range of MIDI controllers and can also be used with a digital vinyl set.

9. Magix Digital DJ

Digital DJ2 isn't the most powerful or sophisticated program on the market, but it offers everything you need for mixing at a relatively affordable price.

This app is a stripped-down version of Image-Line's Deckadance that offers dual-deck mixing, X/Y effects pads, a looper, and support for a wide range of MIDI controllers. Overall, all the features that the Digital DJ2 offers are quite nicely done.

8. Mixvibes Cross

The Cross app from French developer Mixvibes has undergone multiple updates over the past few years, eventually acquiring a large set of features.

The program has a highly customizable interface that contains four decks, an eight-slot sampler, eight assignable cue points and 14 different effects. There is support for a range of controllers, digital vinyl systems and the ability to import your music library directly from Pioneer Rekordbox.

There's also an interesting remote control app available for iOS that works as a second screen for browsing tracks or allows you to control virtual decks remotely.

7. Algoriddim's djay

Algoriddim's djay may be considered the best on iOS, but the Mac version of the application remains one of the best desktop applications for DJing.

Today, djay for Mac is aimed more at beginners and people for whom DJing is just a hobby. The main selling point is its well-implemented iTunes integration, which allows users to browse their library and playlists right within the app.

There are many more flexible options for DJs. For example, a large number of effects, cue points and a sampler built into the program. Djay, in addition, supports a significant list of MIDI controllers, and also has the ability to control the program using a connected remote application for iOS.

6.Mixxx

The two main advantages of Mixx are its complete open source nature and its free nature.

Therefore, the application has a growing community of users who often develop new, free-to-use features that improve the program.

Mixxx comes standard with iTunes integration, four sample decks, loops, cue points and support for a wide range of playable track formats. Also thanks to its creative community, mappings are available for a very wide range of MIDI devices.

5. Image-Line Deckadance 2

Deckadance 2 from Image-Line, the developers of FL Studio, brings powerful rhythm-based editing capabilities, a customizable interface, and a great Smart Knob feature that lets you set macro control over multiple parameters at once.

The app also offers four mixing decks, a 16-slot sample player, and external VST plug-in functionality, meaning you can use your favorite third-party software effects and instruments.

4. Atomix VirtualDJ Pro

VirtualDJ Pro is the most expensive, by some standards, of the DJ applications presented. But it offers very flexible professional functions.

For example, VirtualDJ Pro can handle 99 virtual decks. It's also ReWire compatible, meaning it can work in conjunction with a variety of virtual studios, opening up a whole world of production possibilities.

The app also has audio line inputs and comes with mappings for a fairly large range of DJ controllers.

3. Serato DJ

Serato has come a long way since its birth and has been at the forefront of digital vinyl DJing for nine years now. The company may have lost its position as a market leader to Native Instruments over the years, but constant development has meant that Serato's DJ software is still one of the best.

With the launch of Serato DJ in 2013, the company finally brought together two disparate areas of its software—digital vinyl based on Scratch Live and controllers based on Itch—into a single, unified application.

Full support for various controllers and vinyl emulation system is still excellent. And with the company focusing on one product, Serato has a good future ahead.

2. Ableton Live

Ableton Live is something of an anomaly on this list, due to the fact that it's not really a real DJ app - or at least it wasn't originally intended to be. However, while it was initially intended as a purely production tool, within ten years of its inception Live has become a favorite of DJs around the world.

Key to its popularity with DJs is the Session View mode - a brilliantly implemented mode, with a clear design for triggering synchronized samples, midi clips and tracks. It's this mode, along with Live's intuitive way of timing samples, that makes it a fantastic tool for blurring the lines between DJing and live performance.

An additional bonus is a large number of built-in instruments and effects. And the ability to connect external plugins and an intuitive learning function for midi mapping make Live the unrivaled all-in-one software for electronic musicians.

1. Native Instruments Traktor Pro

A decade after its launch, Traktor Pro is pretty much the gold standard for digital DJing. While some of its competitors may do certain things better, no app can match Traktor's overall flexibility and reliability.

In addition to excellent sampler decks, remix decks and a loop recorder, high-quality effects and impressive tempo and key analysis algorithms, Traktor has almost everything a modern DJ needs.

Native Instruments' own hardware controllers - the flagship S2 and S4, and the compact X1, F1 and Z1 - are among the best, once again confirming that the company firmly holds its position in the modern market.

With all due respect to vinyl junkies and CD purists, when it comes to convenience, cost-effectiveness and flexibility, there is no doubt that a DJ's best choice is a computer. And if you're going to DJ, you'll need the right software.

Fortunately, the market is filled with applications that allow you to mix not only two tracks, but four simultaneously. In addition, DJs are offered creative opportunities that can be used during performances. Add a hardware controller and you have a complete setup that perfectly meets all technical requirements.

We have created a short list to help you choose the right program.

Top 10 programs for DJs today:

It's not the most professional or advanced app, but it does provide all the basic mixing features you need. Digital DJ2 is a shortened version of Image-Line Deckadance. For a small license fee you get a two-deck mixer, effects, loops and a large range of supported midi controllers.

A heavier application with a stylish design. Under the hood there are basic functions and some innovations, such as video editing and even karaoke support, which is sometimes (and fortunately less and less recently) useful. Expand the interface to four virtual disks, and synchronize compositions by tempo. A trial version can be downloaded from the PCDJ website.

Recently, algoriddim has focused on the djay pro mobile application, which is available for mobile devices on iOS and Android platforms.

Djay Pro allows you to mix tracks from Spotify (if you have a premium account) and your iTunes library. Has extended support for Pioneer devices.

Cross was created by a team of French developers. In recent years, many updates have been released for the application, which allows you to receive all new and high-quality functions. Four decks, two samplers and fourteen different functions. Integrate your music directly into SoundCloud and iTunes. Download the cross-platform application also on mobile devices.

6. Atomix VirtualDJ Pro

Every DJ knows this application. Perhaps precisely because of its popularity, it has the highest price on the market - $299 for the Pro version.

The software features audio line inputs and comes with cards for a fairly significant range of DJ controllers. The latest version (8th) adds sandbox functionality to preview other DJs' private mixes, an expanded sampler, an updated sound engine, and more.

If you don't want to pay the full price of a license, you can subscribe to VirtualDJ Pro for $19 per month.

5.Mixxx

Mixxx is one of our favorite apps that is free to use and open source.

Mixxx comes standard with two decks (each with its own scroll scraping cue), iTunes integration, four sample decks, loops, cues, and support for a wide range of formats. There's automatic tempo detection and sync, as well as an Auto DJ feature for when you're feeling lazy. Supports over 30 controllers and vinyl systems.

If you don't have a favorite DJ app, Mixxx is worth a try. After all, you have nothing to lose.

Currently under Gibson's ownership there are some great tools: mesh editing, flexible GUI, macro style control.

Mix 4 tracks simultaneously with support for processing by third-party insert plugins. In terms of functionality, Deckadance is slightly inferior to its competitors.

Serato has come a long way since spearheading the birth of digital vinyl DJing over a decade ago. The lead may have been lost, but constant development and updates keep the app competitive.

In 2013, Serato was revived and holds a confident third place on this list.

Ableton Live is something of an anomaly on this list. We all know it as a DAW program for mixing and mastering music. However, it was originally created and presented as a program for composing music. After many years, it has become one of the most popular among DJs. An added bonus is the many built-in instruments and effects.

Traktor Pro is the gold standard and is predominantly used by many DJs. We will miss the fact that competitors perform some functions better, but here it is “all in one” and none of them compares in terms of flexibility and reliability.

We're used to thinking that good creative software comes at a cost, but that's not true at all. In this material we will suggest several free programs for those who are interested in DJing, but cannot afford a real mixing console.

Tip #1: Virtual DJ

The free Virtual DJ 8 program in its modern version is an almost full-fledged virtual mixing console. It includes all the features you might need to enter the world of remixing—including the professional ones.

Free DJ utility Virtual DJ for PC

With Virtual DJ, you can not only mix songs using the built-in crossfader, but also level their sound based on BPM (bits per minute).

The program offers a lot of samples and sound effects to really get people going at a party. For real pros, loop functions are available to give transitions between tracks an original sound.

A special feature of Virtual DJ is the ability to transfer audio files using timecode to virtual turntables and mix them on a real console connected to a PC, and vice versa. This functionality is called "scratch". In order to truly “feel vinyl” in this way, you will need special equipment, but as a bonus, you will have the opportunity to digitize your vinyl record collection.

Tip #2: Audacity

Audacity is a wonderful virtual recording studio for Windows. The program has been improved for many years, which could not but affect the result: it is hardly possible to find a more sophisticated audio editor now, and absolutely free of charge.

Audacity for Windows

Audacity works with all known audio formats (MP3, Ogg/Vorbis, WAV, MIDI, AIFF). It allows you to mix music tracks, add sound effects, convert audio files, change playback speed. Delay and compression effects are already built into the program, and with VST support you can add many new ones.

The audio recording function allows you to record audio from a microphone and save audio files to disk. In addition, using the noise filter included in the program, you can quickly remove any interference from the recorded track.

Tip #3: CrossDJ Free

CrossDJ is designed for professional DJs, but has a free basic version that can be used without restrictions.

CrossDj Free for PC

The program makes it possible to play a digital collection of records on two decks, providing smooth transitions between songs using the equalizer and crossfader. “On board” the program has almost all modern functions for superimposing one composition on another: automatic synchronization via BMP, control points, filters and loop functions.

The free basic version of CrossDJ comes with some limitations: for example, the mixer only supports two channels and offers only three effects. In addition, audio recording and sampling functions, as well as control via a MIDI controller, are not available.

CrossDJ Free, in general, does not reinvent the wheel, but it should be noted that it is no less suitable for advanced users than for beginners.

Tip #4: Zulu DJ

Zulu DJ is a free remixing software aimed primarily at beginners or very budget-conscious DJs.

Zulu DJ program

The program provides all the necessary tools to extract beats from speakers. You can add variety to your sound by changing the sound of your songs using preset filters. There's a built-in crossfader that lets you create cool transitions from one song to another, and it also supports a BPM counter.

In addition, if after a long DJ set you want to sit back and just enjoy the music, Zulu DJ can be used as a regular media player that will automatically “glue” tracks together.

The program has one serious drawback: during installation, it adds a lot of extraneous junk to the Start menu, which then has to be removed manually. If you do not want to receive unnecessary browser extensions during installation, be careful and do not agree to dubious offers from the installer.

Tip #5: Schatti's AudioMixer

Schatti's AudioMixer is a free virtual console with 10 channels for mixing. For novice users trying their hand at controlling a mixing console, this program will be quite suitable.

Schatti's Audio Mixer

The program allows you to download up to 10 tracks and play them simultaneously or separately, as well as mix them together. In addition to the 10-channel mixer, AudioMixer has a CD channel, an audio recorder for cutting tracks and a tracklist.

AudioMixer's weak point is its increased sensitivity to control. If your hands shake, you may have some difficulty adjusting the settings. But in general, the program has all the basic functions to feel like a remix master.
