Andrei Nikolaevich, why is Dimitrovgrad entrusted with such an honor?
Andrey Silkin: It's simple. Firstly, the famous RIAR is located here - the main producer of "raw" medical radionuclides in Russia. Secondly, it is here that there is a unified system of healthcare institutions of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FMBA). Thirdly, on the basis of local universities and colleges, it is easy to create the necessary training base for this project.
Is the project really that big?
AS: Well, I would not talk about the grandeur. I can only say that there has never been such a large-scale and unprecedented undertaking in Russian nuclear medicine. Cancer is the second most fatal disease in the country, and we must do everything to mitigate this phenomenon. At the same time, it is necessary to take into account that it is impossible to finally cope with this type of disease at this moment - I mean the global scale, international developments and practices ... The problem of cancer management is facing all states of the world, including Russia. But we are doing our best to be in the forefront of this struggle.

AS: Easy. Today, two cancers are curable - thyroid and prostate cancer. And this is solely due to the advances in nuclear medicine. I will add that diagnostics using radioisotope technologies has no alternative so far. The future of the fight against cancer cannot be imagined without this method. It is for this that a nuclear medical center is being created in Dimitrovgrad, including a PET tomography center.
Surely there are some predictions, in particular, how will the emergence of the center affect the treatment of cancer in general?
AS: The creation of federal nuclear medical centers will reduce the recurrence of malignant neoplasms by 5-8 times, improve the quality of diagnostics of cardiovascular diseases by 30-40 percent, reduce cancer rates by 15-20 percent, and so on. Naturally, if all these centers operate at full capacity. There is no doubt that this is how the center in Dimitrovgrad will work.
Everything is great, but what will this center give to the region?
AS: Jobs, infrastructure renewal, synergies in the end. The development of Dimitrovgrad will be given and is already given a huge impetus. I am sure there is no doubt about it. But let us dwell on the fact that the best - I emphasize - the best center for diagnostics and treatment of cancer in the country, where the best specialists will work, will be located within walking distance of any resident of the Ulyanovsk region. AS: The question is clear ... Someone is always looking for something difficult ... It will be a unique complex with unique equipment. The Dimitrovgrad center will become exactly the icebreaker in the wake of which the entire nuclear medicine of the country will develop. Yes, today there is such a construction that it is often not easy to put the designed newest equipment into the concrete on time. This is a "live" project, it is constantly being improved, but at the same time it develops according to the established schedule. Until today, not a single failure, not a single error has occurred. I will add that not a single industry in the country today can boast of a project of this scale and such dynamics. The project has got off to a great start, is developing, and I don't see anything that could hinder its implementation on time and in maximum quality.
