The Mac OS X desktop can be used for more than just temporary storage of files necessary for operation and placement of application icons. How do you, for example, the opportunity draw on it, no matter how full of different elements it is? This function is implemented by a small Desktastic app from Panic Inc., the developer of well-known applications such as Coda and Transmit.

When you start the application for the first time, a window appears with an unobtrusive offer to indicate your email address in order to receive news on the release of new versions of Desktastic.

Then the application itself will start and ... you will not see anything new on the Desktop, except for a small toolbar located in the upper left corner of the screen. The thing is that the program does not have its own working window at all. ... The entire area of the Desktop is used as a drawing surface.... There is no need to worry about the safety of the background image and the contents of the Desktop - the application creates a completely transparent layer on top of the table, it is on it that drawing takes place without affecting what is underneath at all.

Desktastic is very easy to use - select the desired tool on the panel (by default, Painting) and start creating. The only problem may be the need to remember which button on the toolbar is responsible for what, because there are no explanatory names near the button icons.

Drawing Tool... The main mode of the program is drawing mode.
Text Tool... The ability to write on the screen, making captions to your drawings, notes, etc. The user can only select the font size ( small, medium or big) in the program settings.
Stamp tool... The function allows you to clone any graphic image of a reasonable size, which is set, again, in the settings menu.
Eraser Tool... The most common eraser. Allows you to erase what you write or draw.
Width... The parameter responsible for the line thickness when drawing. Three thickness grades are available.
Opacity... Sets the degree of transparency of the picture. There are also three levels of transparency available.
Color... A palette of colors that can be used when painting. To select a different color, just click on the icon. It is inconvenient that the choice of color is carried out by brute force, and not by choosing all possible colors from the palette at once..
Draw-On-Top Mode... A trigger button that turns on / off the display of an additional layer on the screen, on which drawing is carried out.
Clear all... A more progressive version of the eraser, which allows you to clear the screen of all drawings or inscriptions made with one click.

The settings menu is very simple and contains very few options that fit into just one tab. In addition to the options that we have already mentioned when talking about the toolbar, in the settings menu it is possible to change the location of the toolbar and select one of the two modes of application operation.

The modes are called Above desktop icons and Below desktop icons, the essence of which is that in the first mode, the user does not have access to the icons on the Desktop and can immediately start drawing, and in the second, in order to start drawing, you first have to use the button Draw-On-Top or a specially set shortcut. The second mode seems to us more convenient, allowing you to keep Desktastic in the background and, if necessary, activate the ability to draw with a given key.

To ensure that what the user drew on the screen does not disappear without a trace, Desktastic provides the ability to save a drawing as a PNG file or print it out. Both functions are available from item File program menu.

Needless to say that it is not very convenient to draw with a mouse, which is why the developers implemented in the application support for Wacom pen tablets.

It is difficult to talk about the real practical value of the program, it can serve more for entertainment than for serious work. Among the shortcomings of the current version of the application, I would like to note rare, but still arising situations when the program settings menu is not available... The link to the settings menu itself remains clickable, but the result is zero.

Desktastic is a commercial application and will cost a potential buyer 12.95$ ... From the developer's website, you can download a demo version of the program for free, when using which we did not notice any restrictions, all the functions specified on the developer's website work properly. There are no signs that this is a demo version either, only in the program menu there is a special item for registration. It remains unclear what such mysterious functions and capabilities are unlocked after registration, we did not find information about this on the site, and to buy the program, giving almost 13 dollars for the opportunity to draw on the screen, to be honest, there is no particular desire :)

It often happens that we urgently need to make some notes right in the browser screen, for example, by recording a training video or creating a screenshot (screenshot) of the screen.

Moreover, such a wonderful and useful tool as "Screen Pencil / Screen Brush" (according to the author of the site) can be useful in everyday practice, for example:

1. To instantly pour out the accumulated artistic talents and capture them in a new PNG or JPG image file.

Judging by the picture on the same label, it is proposed to turn the computer desktop into a kind of blackboard, on which you can show the outlines of letters or other illustrations in the educational field. Enlightenment is a very serious thing, with the same attitude we will consider this program as a tool for teaching and visual presentation of information.

Here we choose the color of the crayon for drawing or text, or select a hotkey for the subsequent color change. There is a multicolor Rainbow mode, in which the color changes automatically and the style is very colorful - with alternating colors. With this selection, the color can be changed to the next one with the left mouse button.

The next option - Size - brings us to the tab:

Here you can set the line thickness for chalk outlines. We see the actual thickness in the samples shown on the left.

Next is Draw and the corresponding tab:

Here you can choose one of the templates for automatic drawing: circle rectangle or straight line. Selecting a template results in a single drawing of the shape in one of two options: Outline (in the form of a contour), Solid (a shape filled with the current color).

VB Doodle is a faithfully made program for drawing with crayons on your computer desktop like a chalkboard. Does not require installation and does not cause problems during use. It can be useful, for example, when teaching a young child the alphabet or in other situations (for example, leaving yourself a reminder that immediately catches your eye).
