Dear visitors!!!

When acquiring and further operating a refrigerator, various questions arise on various malfunctions related to the refrigeration circuit, with a malfunction in the electrical part, and so on. I believe that this topic and the subsequent notes on refrigerators will serve as a good practical guide for you.

How to fix a refrigerator? DIY refrigerator repair (diagram)

In order to have a complete understanding of the electrical circuits of refrigerators, we need to go back to the 70s of the last century, where in our domestic technical literature it was possible to find out a detailed description of all types of refrigerators of those years.

In modern circuits, we can observe: a cold storage chamber thermostat with grounding, a temperature compensation switch, a heater, an overheating protection relay, a compressor with grounding, an overcurrent protection device, a door contact and a lamp. The overcurrent protection device is the principle of operation of an electromagnet, with overcurrents, the rod in the winding is attracted to the poles of the magnetic circuit, the contact opens, and a break occurs in the electrical circuit. When the current stabilizes, the return spring brings the rod to its original position and the contact closes the electrical circuit.

refrigerator condenser \ coil \

The overheating protection relay works on the principle of the mobility of the bimetallic plate until a certain heating, the temperature heating is set in the heating resistor that gives off heat to the bimetallic plate, and a certain heating of the resistor creates a current.

We know from electrical engineering that the lower the resistance in the electrical circuit, the greater the current, which means the resistor has its own specific resistance to the temperature regime. So the plate was deformed under the influence of heat, - the contact opened.

The heating temperature of the plate has decreased - the plate has taken its original position, - the electric circuit is closed. The heater is made in the form of an ordinary incandescent spiral. The compressor is installed in refrigerators, single-phase, with a squirrel-cage rotor. The circuit also has a lamp connected in parallel in the electrical circuit, with a contact brought out on the refrigerator door, the contact closes when the door is opened.

Refrigeration circuit operation

For floor-standing refrigerators, the refrigeration unit has a lower motor-compressor arrangement. The sealed refrigeration unit mainly consists of:

  • motor - compressor;
  • capacitor;
  • evaporator

and is a circulating closed system.

refrigeration circuit with two motor - compressors

Refrigerant \ freon \ is used for circulation. When the motor - compressor is operating, freon vapors are sucked from the evaporator through the suction pipe into the casing of the motor - compressor and then the freon enters the cylinder.

Further, hot vapors of freon from the compressor cylinder are injected under pressure into the condenser. Due to the small section of the capillary tube, the freon pressure in the condenser increases. The refrigerant condenses at high pressure and freon in a liquid state accumulates on the end turns of the condenser coil.

refrigeration unit device

Through a capillary tube from the condenser, freon enters the evaporator. Getting into the evaporator, the liquid freon begins to boil, since a low pressure is created in the evaporator. Heat is absorbed from the environment, that is, from the refrigerating chamber.

The absorbed heat together with the refrigerant goes back through the motor-compressor to the condenser \ coil \.

Refrigerator wiring diagram

refrigerator scheme Stinol

This diagram contains the following connections:

  • thermostat TH1;
  • thermal relay RH1;
  • compressor CO1;
  • starting protective relay RA1,

- connected in series in an electrical circuit. Two light bulbs are connected in parallel in the circuit:

  • indicator lamp SL1;
  • refrigerator compartment lighting lamp L1

and a button for lighting the refrigerator compartment IL1.

Reasons for the malfunction of the refrigerator

The reasons for not turning on the refrigerator can be different:

  • the single-pole circuit breaker in the group panel is turned off,
  • the machine is turned off above the electric meter in the apartment,
  • there is no contact between the plug and the socket,
  • the temperature regulator in the refrigerator is not turned on,
  • the refrigerator overheating protection relay has tripped and you immediately turned on the refrigerator again.

refrigerator thermostat Stinol

A malfunction of the thermostat affects the operation of the refrigerator:

  • duration of work;
  • prolonged non-inclusion;
  • continuity of work.

Usually, this reason for a malfunction of the refrigerator thermostat is the oxidation of the contacts.

In the event of a breakdown, malfunction of the thermostat - you should disassemble it and clean the contacts of the bimetallic plate.

If the starting relay fails, it may fail:

  • starting winding of the motor - compressor;
  • working winding of the motor - compressor,

- depending on the nature of the malfunction.

starting protection relay for motor - compressor

electrical diagram of starting and protective relay

The protective relay is an overcurrent fuse for the electric motor \ motor - compressor \. Failure of the protective relay leads to failure of the electric motor or shutdown as such / shutdown of the electric motor without the influence of the thermostat \.

Or in other words, with a sharp increase in current strength \ voltage surge \ in the electrical network and a malfunction of the protective relay, the stator windings of the electric motor burn out.

Also, for refrigerators, such a malfunction is typical as the frequent operation of the protective relay, which leads to the switching on and off of the motor - compressor without the participation of the thermostat.

Repair, with the subsequent installation or replacement of a motor - compressor for a refrigeration unit, is a more voluminous performance of work. In general, soldering and welding are used when repairing a refrigeration unit.

motor - refrigerator compressor

Steel and copper pipes are connected together by soldering with silver solder.

silver solder PSP 45

The cover of the casing of the motor - compressor is welded with a steel electrode.

Depending on the nature of the work carried out during the repair of the refrigeration unit, the following types of connections can be used:

  • tin soldering;
  • butt welding;
  • arc welding;
  • argon arc welding;
  • brazing with copper;
  • soldering with silver solder.

Such work, for the repair of the refrigeration unit, in some cases requires specialized conditions, that is, they are carried out in the workshop premises.

gas torch for brazing copper pipes

Evaporator and condenser \ coil \ made of aluminum, - are connected to copper pipes through copper-aluminum transition pipes. The aluminum side of the pipe is TIG welded to the evaporator. The copper side of the branch pipe is soldered with silver solder.

copper and bronze solder fittings

Argon arc welding is performed with a special torch using filler material. The parts to be welded are pre-cleaned with a wire brush and degreased with gasoline.

When welding the casing of the motor - compressor, work should be carried out as quickly as possible so as not to overheat the cover with contacts.

For butt welding of individual parts, a 220V household welding machine is quite suitable.

welding machine FUBAG TR 220

The place of freon leakage from the refrigeration unit is determined in a workshop, under air pressure.

It should also be remembered that with a reduced voltage in the electrical network, the contacts of the starting relay at the moment the engine \ motor-compressor \ is turned on may not close, as a result of which the starting winding will not be connected. For this reason, the rotor will not be able to turn, and a short-circuit current will flow through the working winding. The electric motor in this example is likely to burn out.

The stated topic will have an addition.

That's all for now.

    Hello! In the LG GA-479UVMA refrigerator, an element in the control unit burned out (the refrigerator worked and did not turn off.). In the workshop they turned to, they said that the compressor start relay had burned out, and they also said that this relay does not greatly affect the operation, you just need to turn on the refrigerator to the network and the refrigerator will continue to work without a relay. Is this really possible? Or does the relay still need to be replaced?
    thanks

    Hello! I have an ARISTON refrigerator. In the refrigerating chamber, ice began to freeze on the back wall (from the top), after defrosting it worked for a week and burned out. I called the master, changed the motor-compressor, filter, pumped in freon, the refrigerator started working. After I noticed that he did not turn off, as a result, he worked for 20 days without a break. I called the master, explained the situation, recommended replacing the "thermostat", bought-replaced-started, the same problem works without interruption and does not freeze. The compressor is hot, the radiator is cold. It seems that the motor cannot push through the radiator. Master KOZ …… .L not a good person stopped picking up the phone. Please tell me the reason.

    Hello! My Indesit B16S.025 refrigerator turns on for 5 seconds and turns off, then after about 30-60 seconds it turns on again for 5 seconds and turns off. Can you please tell me what it could be? And is it subject to repair, or can you buy a new refrigerator? In general, what brands of refrigerators are the most reliable? Thanks in advance for your reply!

    In our refrigerator, the temperature is regulated by a knob on the panel, and it doesn't matter if you put it on a gentle mode, or at full power, the work also happens (it turns on for 5 seconds and turns off, then after about 30-60 seconds it turns on again for 5 seconds and turns off) ... There was an assumption, maybe the thermal relay has flown?

    Hello! After being connected to the network, the compressor works for 5-10 seconds and turns off. I tried to put a new start relay, the same thing happens.

    Hello Nikolay. We bought a new start-up relay, installed it, but nothing changed (it turns on for 5 seconds and turns off, then after about 30-60 seconds it turns on again for 5 seconds and turns off). Only now it can work for 15 seconds, and after 15 seconds it starts up again. It is far and expensive to take to repairs, but we ourselves cannot understand what could be ???

    Good evening
    The refrigerator is more than about 20 years old - it has never been serviced Vestfrost 355 - two-compartment.
    A couple of times I vibrated strongly - I called the master. The master said that the motor had not died yet (in the freezer) but clogged up - a new filter was soldered in and freon was injected. For about 10 hours the freezer was gaining cold - The red light went out - After a day in the freezer for about - 20. But the motor does not turn off to my mind. The relay to the upper chamber is triggered and its motor is periodically turned off
    How to determine if the freezer motor turns off and whether the freezer motor is working correctly - I'm afraid it will burn out - if it works without stopping

    Sincerely
    Andrey

    • Hello. Your Vestfrost 355 refrigerator with two motor-compressors, respectively, in the refrigerator circuit there are two thermostats and two starting protection relays. The technician has replaced the drying filter (for the freezer) and you do not know if the motor-compressor turns off after the repair.
      You need to call the master to check the operation of the motor-compressor, and before the master arrives, the refrigerator must be turned off. The duration of one cycle (on-off-on) of the motor-compressor of the freezer must be from 8 to 15 minutes. I believe that for satisfactory operation of the motor-compressor, it is necessary to correctly set the knob of the freezer temperature control. If the master finds out that the motor-compressor is operating in a constant mode (without periodic switching on and off), then for this example, it is necessary to check the serviceability of the thermostat and the start-up relay (start and thermal relay).

      • Victor, thanks for the comment
        The master is on vacation.
        On your advice, reduced the temperature in the freezer. The result is that for 2-3 hours it works very quietly, then it turns off for 10-15 minutes. Is this normal mode? If you add -5 degrees, it picks up the temperature for sooooo long and has never been able to catch a shutdown.
        I forgot to say - the master replaced 134 by 600 freon. I poured in half less - by weight. It feels like I haven't refilled or poured it. As far as I understand, extra grams are very critical

    Good day! My refrigerator Nord DKh-241-6-030 is working fine, but 1-2 times a day something is running low in it, knocking out the machine in the switchboard. After turning on the machine, it continues to work normally. What is most surprising is that this happens during a period of time when the compressor is not running. The malfunction of all other household appliances is excluded, the machine knocks out at night, when only the refrigerator is connected to the network. Today, at the time of the next closure, I was next to the refrigerator, the compressor did not work at that time (it turned off a few minutes before). The sound does not sound like an attempt to start the compressor, rather it looks like the sound of an arc discharge, the light went out and the machine gun was knocked out. After turning on the machine, everything is normal again, after five minutes the compressor started normally. Maybe you have any ideas where to look for the closure?

Despite the fact that modern refrigerators are quite reliable and capable of serving for several decades, they also periodically fail. It is worth solving problems with household appliances right away. Some problems can be dealt with on their own, while others require specialist intervention.

Typical refrigerator malfunctions and their elimination

Typical problems that you can deal with on your own include:

  • the appearance of extraneous sounds and rattling;
  • insufficient or strong cooling of food;
  • accumulation of water at the bottom of the unit;
  • not working condition of a light bulb or indicator;
  • But the serious problems that require the intervention of professionals include:

    • current piercing through the casing;
    • turning off the device immediately after turning it on;
    • the formation of a snow cap on the back wall;
    • stopping the operation of the motor - compressor;
    • lack of cooling.

    Increased noise, rattling, knocking

    Most often, no matter how trite it may seem, the rattling of the unit is caused by an incorrectly adjusted suspension of the compressor casing. To solve the problem, it is enough to lower the suspension bolts with springs to the required level.

    Also, equipment rattling can be caused by contact of the product body with pipelines. This is solved by detecting problem areas and moving the tubes. Relays can also cause jitter. To fix the problem, it is worth making sure that it is located correctly and according to the special labels.

    The refrigerator is cold or cold

    If the refrigeration equipment begins to freeze strongly or weakly, you will need to check several indicators at once:

    • Most often, the unit does not freeze due to the failure of the thermostat or if it is incorrectly configured. To adjust the thermostat, just turn its knob in the desired direction.
    • The problem may be a decrease in the performance of the compressor motor. In this case, it is worth calling the master. He will check the unit with a special measuring device. If freon has leaked out of the system, it will not freeze. You can check the leakage of freon if, after a long-term operation of the compressor, you touch its surface with your hand and do not feel heating. But only a qualified technician can find a leak and recharge the system.
    • The refrigerator can stop freezing due to a poor sealing system between the walls and doors. When, after prolonged use, the elastic loses its elasticity and does not fit well, the cold comes out through the cracks. The breakdown can be solved by completely replacing the seal.
    • Heat loss can occur due to the wrong position of the door, its loose fit. In this case, you will need to adjust the doors and put them in their original place.
    • Heat loss can also be due to a problem with the electrical heating, fan, fuse or timer. Such problems most often concern units with a modern No frost system.
    • Problems may also be associated with the inclusion of the quick freeze function and the wrong position of the thermostat. The solution is to switch the cold supply to the correct mode and turn off the freezing or turn the thermostat knob to the correct position.

    The device is shocked

    Sometimes consumers are faced with the problem that refrigeration equipment is electrocuted. This can happen both during his work and in a calm state.

    Attention: using a device that shocks is dangerous to life. Unplug it immediately and either fix the problem yourself or call the wizard.

    To fix the problem yourself, you will need a special device - a megohmmeter, with which the insulation resistance of the refrigerator wiring is measured. The workflow will look like this:

  1. Disconnect the unit from the mains and check the wires for visible defects.
  2. If you haven't noticed any flaws on the wires, you will need one more device - "Ground". Its wire is connected to the body of the refrigerator, and the second wire - "Line", to the wire of the refrigerator. The "Line" wire is alternately connected to the thermostat, relay and compressor wires, and excessive resistance will be displayed on the screen.
  3. After the location of the malfunction is calculated, the damaged wire will need to be replaced with a new one or carefully insulated.

The motor-compressor runs continuously

The refrigerator can start to work continuously if the room temperature rises constantly or the thermostat knob is incorrectly set. Under these conditions, the equipment will operate at full capacity. If the thermostat is set correctly, and the unit is operating at full capacity without interruption, then it simply failed and must be replaced. Also, a problem in the constant operation of the compressor motor may be a refrigerant leak. This can only be determined using a special device. It is impossible to repair the equipment on your own without the skill and necessary consumables. It is worth contacting the workshop here.

Thermal relay trips frequently

A thermal relay often trips for a variety of reasons:

  • increased voltage in the electric motor circuit;
  • the relay is loose;
  • relay contacts oxidized;
  • there are faults in the starting relay;
  • the compressor is seized.

Important: most often the thermal relay often trips due to an increased voltage in the motor circuit. If the problem is not eliminated in time, its winding will burn out.

You can try to fix the breakdown by checking the voltage in the electric motor network. If stable, check the relay. For this, the motor is connected directly without a relay. If, after the performed manipulations, the equipment starts to work properly, you will need to replace the relay.

Formation of a snow coat inside the refrigerator

Sometimes in two-compartment refrigerators, excess moisture appears on the walls in the form of drops of water or a snow coat. This can happen due to long open doors, or if the seal has lost its elasticity. It can also be provoked by the fact that hot food is placed in the unit. Correcting this situation begins with checking all the settings in the cooling system.

Quite often, in modern models, a fur coat on the walls appears when the internal lighting is turned off. It is impossible to see if the backlight is on after the door is closed. To check if the light is on or not, place a thin object between the equipment wall and the seal and close the door. Through the resulting gap, you can determine whether the light is on or not. If it does not light up, then repair the lighting system or replace the button - the switch that comes out of the wall towards the door.

The refrigerator does not work completely

If, after connecting the unit to the network, it does not make any sounds, then the refrigerator does not work completely. This is most often due to the lack of current in the power supply network or to the failure of the refrigerator cord. If there is current, simply replace the cord or plug.

The refrigerator works, but with a short cycle

If the refrigeration equipment works, but with a short cycle, this can provoke:

  • high pressure;
  • the presence of air in the system;
  • excess freon;
  • relay actuation;
  • dirty fan;
  • failure of the fan.

For troubleshooting, you need to check if the fan is connected correctly. If there is a small amount of air in the system or there is an excess of freon, they will need to be vented through the valve. Remember to check the condenser for dust contamination. Frequent activation of the low pressure switch leads to clogging of the filter or damage to the expansion valve. In this case, you just need to clean the filter or replace it with a new one, check the relay settings.

Moisture collects at the bottom of the refrigerator

Moisture can collect on the bottom of the refrigerator due to the tube misalignment or clogging. You can cope with a breakdown quite quickly if you clean the pipe that leads water to a special receiver using a long and flexible wire. The wire is inserted into the tube and moves along the hole to the bottom of the unit. After a few minutes of the working process, all the debris will go into the water receiver.

Caution: To completely clean the tube, it is best to douche it several times.

The appearance of an unpleasant odor in the unit

An unpleasant smell appears in the refrigerator from improper use. To do this, it is not recommended to place products with a pungent smell in it without special containers, wipe the walls of the device in time and monitor its cleanliness.

If, however, an unpleasant odor still appears in the device, you must quickly get rid of it. Since this will have a bad effect on all the products that are stored in it. This process can take several hours of your free time:

  1. Disconnect the unit from the network and leave it for a while. If ice has formed on the walls, it is not recommended to remove it by force. Since we can cause mechanical damage to equipment.
  2. After the equipment is completely defrosted, we wipe its walls with special means. Powder abrasive mixtures should not be chosen. Better opt for helium pastes.
  3. Wipe the refrigerator dry with a clean cloth, ventilate it for 5-10 hours.
  4. We plug the unit into an outlet and continue to operate it.

Backlight does not work

In some models of refrigerators, light bulbs in the backlight often burn out. Replacing them should not be difficult. It is enough just to unscrew the bolt holding the cover, remove it and unscrew the burned out light bulb. In its place, a new lamp is screwed in, the power of which should not exceed 15 W., and fix the shade in place.

Diagnostics of malfunctions of the refrigerator

Before proceeding with the repair of refrigeration equipment, it is necessary to diagnose it in order to understand whether it is possible to cope with the breakdown on its own or it is worth resorting to the help of specialists.

  1. To diagnose equipment at home, you will need to prepare a universal tester and a screwdriver. Diagnostics begins with determining the quality of the voltage in the network. If it is 220 W, then everything is normal. If the voltage is less than this indicator, this can become the main reason for the failure of the household appliance.
  2. Next, we carefully examine the cord and plug of the unit for integrity. It should not have defects, it should not heat up during operation.
  3. Next, we inspect the terminals on the compressor. It is better to do this with the equipment disconnected from the network.
  4. We inspect the compressor, which is located at the lower rear of the refrigerator. It must be free of defects and damage. After visual inspection, we check the winding. Disconnect flexible wires before inspection. It is necessary to check the winding circuit for continuity using a tester.
  5. After that, you can proceed to diagnostics of small parts - the temperature sensor. To do this, use a screwdriver to remove and disconnect the wiring. Each wire is tested for functionality with a tester.

When it is imperative to call the master

All malfunctions of refrigeration equipment are divided into two parts:

  1. The inner chamber is not cooled during normal engine start. Most often, the breakdown lies in the main components of the equipment.
  2. The unit does not turn on or turns on for a short time and then turns off. Here, the problems are associated with a malfunction of the electrical circuit of the household appliance.

In the first case, only highly qualified craftsmen should be engaged in repairs, since diagnostics and repairs can only be carried out with the help of special equipment and long-term skills.

But if the electrical mechanism of the unit is out of order, then you can solve the problem on your own - after carrying out diagnostics, identifying the causes of the breakdown and replacing the failed spare part.

In conclusion, I would like to note that every unit, even from a world-famous manufacturer, may stop working at some time. To repair a refrigerator, you need to figure out what the matter is, purchase the necessary part and stock up on free time. If you do not have special experience in the repair of household equipment, it is better to contact the masters of their craft, who will solve all problems quickly and efficiently.

Sounds complicated? If you know how to hold a screwdriver in your hands and are more or less versed in technology, this task is within your reach. Let's try together?

The refrigerator belongs to the category of very reliable household appliances. Unlike, for example, washing machines stuffed with electronics in recent years, there is nothing to break in the mail refrigerator. A serious problem is the depressurization of the system and the breakdown of the compressor, everything else can be fixed by yourself. So repairing refrigerators is a good warm-up for a guy with hands :)

But let's start in order. The first thing to do is try to determine the cause of the breakdown, so to speak, diagnose your refrigerator. Depending on its severity or, conversely, lightness, and should act. Indeed, in some cases, even a blonde can handle the repair of a "broken" refrigerator.

For example, the light inside the refrigerator is off. Before calling the technician, listen to the refrigerator humming. At the same time, keep in mind that he does not do this all the time, but only from time to time. If the refrigerator is humming, but the light is off, then, as you might guess, the light bulb has burned out. Unscrew it and go to the store to buy a similar one, and then screw in a new one.

But this, of course, is the simplest case - for blondes. People with higher living habits are able to diagnose faults in the power cord, plug, and electrical outlet. In houses with old electrical wiring, such breakdowns are not uncommon. In this case, of course, you need to repair the electrical wiring, and not the equipment that is powered by it.

If the light in the refrigerator is on, but the refrigerator is clearly not working (not humming, defrosting), the first step is to check the thermostat. In inexpensive models of refrigerators, there are the same inexpensive temperature regulators, the shelf life of which is 5-7 years, which means that after this time they will almost certainly fail. At the same time, replacing the thermostat is not tricky and you can do it yourself. The only question is where to buy a new one - they are not sold in supermarkets. Type in Yandex the query "thermostats for refrigerators ..." indicating the brand of your refrigerator and you get a list of companies from which you can buy this piece, and often with delivery - everything is cheaper than calling a specialist or taking a refrigerator to a service.

The thermostat is used to control the motor-compressor in the mechanical control circuit of the refrigerator and is installed either on the front panel of the refrigerator or in its chamber. We find two wires suitable for the thermostat, remove them from the terminals and connect them together. If the refrigerator works after that, we change the thermostat and the repair is completed.

There is also such a problem with the thermostat: the refrigerator works, but it freezes slightly (it does not freeze at all - another, more on that below). To eliminate this problem, the thermostat must be adjusted or completely replaced. True, the refrigerator can freeze slightly in two more cases: a loose door fit and a decrease in compressor performance. In both of these cases, you cannot do without a specialized service.

Moving further from simple to complex - compressor problems. It is hardly worth replacing it yourself, but you can try to diagnose the malfunction. Truth and your skills in working with equipment should already be an order of magnitude higher than in previous cases.

There can be three defects in a compressor: a winding break, an inter-turn winding short circuit and a short to the compressor case. How to identify them: all three contacts of the electric motor should ring among themselves and not ring with the body. If the resistance between any two contacts is less than 20 ohms, this may indicate a turn-to-turn closure. Alas, we call the wizard and change the unit.

Another possible problem: oxidation of contacts in one of the connections of the refrigerator electrical circuit. Carefully inspect and clean all the contacts, restore the refrigerator circuit in the reverse order - the refrigerator can and should even work.

Well, now one of the most common problems, which you will definitely not be able to solve yourself - the refrigerator works, but does not freeze at all. This speaks only of one thing - the depressurization of the refrigerator system and the leakage of freon - gas, with the help of the evaporation of which all refrigeration systems work. We are taking the refrigerator to the service - you have no other choice. However, there is - buy a new one :)

And finally, here are some tips to avoid some problems with your refrigerator (as they say, prevention is better than cure):

1. Do not put the refrigerator regulator in the extreme (coldest) position. The temperature in the refrigerator from this will only be very slightly lower than if you put it in the middle position, but the compressor will work at its limit, which means that it will fail much faster. And electricity will "eat" much more actively.

2. Compressors of all refrigerators, without exception, do not like power surges and often fail because of this. If you live in an area where power surges are not uncommon, use a voltage transformer or an uninterruptible power supply to operate the refrigerator - as a result, it will be cheaper.

3. When defrosting the refrigerator, do not pick off the ice with a knife or other sharp objects (and you do this, right? :) - it is so easy to damage the tightness of the refrigerator system and disable it. A knife slipped off by accident, made even a microscopic hole in the freezer - goodbye Freon!

4. Do not install the refrigerator closer than one meter from radiators and stoves. Thus, you will again increase the load on the refrigerator compressor (it will have to work in an increased mode to compensate for the heating of the refrigerator from the outside).

5. Do not store vegetable oil in the refrigerator! The refrigerator is not required for oil, but its vapors lose the elasticity of the rubber gaskets, thereby violating the tightness of the door. Of course, in a year or two you will hardly notice it, but in five years you can "reap the fruits" of your hindsight.

And the last thing: perform all diagnostic and repair actions only by turning off the refrigerator from the network. Otherwise it will electrocute you, and I will be to blame for not warning you about this! :)

If you understand that repairing a refrigerator is too complicated and expensive, it is easier to buy a new one. How to do this correctly is described in our article -.

Good luck and longevity to your refrigerator!

Did this advice help you? You can help the project by donating any amount you like for its development. For example, 20 rubles. Or more:)

Modern human life is filled with a wide variety of household appliances. Not all of them are so necessary, but you simply cannot do without some, for example, without a refrigerator. It is very disappointing when such a necessary technique breaks down. Is it possible to repair the refrigerator with your own hands or will you definitely need to call a specialist? Let's look for the answer in our article.

Equipment

The modern scheme of such equipment is presented:

  • Refrigerated storage room thermostat;
  • Temperature compensation switch;
  • Heater;
  • Overheating protection relay;
  • Compressor;
  • Overcurrent protection device;
  • Contact on the door;
  • A lamp.

Important! The operation of the protective relay against overheating is based on a bimetallic plate. When heated to a certain temperature, it expands and opens the circuit. As the temperature decreases, the plate returns to its original size and the circuit closes.

The sealed refrigeration unit includes:

  • Motor-compressor;
  • Capacitor;
  • Evaporator.

How the refrigerator works

Most often, the motor-compressor is located at the bottom. This system is closed, in which freon circulates:

  • When the motor-compressor is running, freon vapor is sucked from the evaporator and enters the cylinder.
  • After - hot vapors of freon are injected under pressure from the cylinder into the condenser.
  • Since the capillary tube has a small cross-section, the freon pressure becomes higher.
  • Further condensation occurs, as a result - liquid refrigerant accumulates on the end turns of the coil.
  • Freon ends up in the evaporator and boils due to the low pressure.

In this way, heat is absorbed from the refrigerator compartment. The refrigerant then flows back into the condenser.

Important! The operating principle of the overcurrent protective device is based on an electromagnet. When overcurrents appear, the rod in the winding is attracted to the poles of the magnetic circuit. In this case, the contact is opened and the power supply is broken. When the current stabilizes, with the help of a return spring, the rod returns to its original position and the electrical network is closed. The heater is represented by an ordinary filament coil.

We diagnose problems

Before you repair the refrigerator with your own hands, you need to determine what exactly broke.

Drainage

A bad sign is the appearance of water under the freezer or under the appliance itself. The reasons for this are:

  • Clogged drainage;
  • Overflow of the condensate collection tank;
  • Drainage tube leaks.

Compressor

To find out if it is fixed, we perform a number of such actions:

  1. First of all, unscrew the bolts located at the bottom of the back cover.
  2. There are four wires for connecting the compressor power supply:
    • blue and brown - phase;
    • yellow and green - grounding;
    • for the power supply itself, black and blue wires are intended.
  3. During the test, all contacts are disconnected, and then only brown cables are connected, for which a metal copper jumper is used.
  4. After the circuit is closed, the power supply is connected.

Important! If the compressor does not start working, it needs to be replaced.

No Frost system

In this case, the refrigerator is equipped with special equipment for dispersing air through the freezing and refrigerating chambers. This prevents the formation of icing.

The fan power supply is linked to the compressor power supply. To check, the rear wall of the freezer is removed and a connection is made to the two contacts of the fan.

Important! If the fan does not start rotating when the power supply is connected, it needs repair.

Fuse

It is made in the form of a small metal cylinder, welded into plastic. Its location is a freezer. This spare part is designed to control temperature drops and protect the heating element.

A simple multimeter is used for testing. If, when the device is brought to the plastic, it shows the presence of current, the fuse must be replaced.

Timer

Its part type can be mechanical or electronic. There is nothing complicated in disassembling a mechanical one - you can do it yourself, but it is better to entrust the diagnostics of an electronic one to professionals.

Important! In order to turn off the electronic timer, the electrical circuit shown on the rear wall of the refrigerator is used.

We repair the refrigerator

In some cases, you can repair the refrigerator yourself, without calling the master.

Freon leak

Most often, refrigerant leaks are visible. But if it was not found, it is required to pump out freon through the tube on the compressor, which is usually sealed. Then air is pumped in. The pressure should be low. Air escaping from the gap will hiss.

To eliminate the hole, you will need a soldering iron, otherwise you will not be able to cope with it. After repair, freon is fully pumped back into the system.

Important! In most cases, it is best to entrust the repair of such a malfunction to qualified technicians.

Change the thermostat

Usually, a relay malfunction is indicated by the absence of cold in the chamber. For check:

  • Cutting the wires that lead to the relay from the plug and from it to the refrigerator itself is performed.
  • Then they are closed with each other.
  • If the part starts working, the problem is found.

Important! Most often, in this case, the thermostat is simply replaced.

Food does not freeze

Often no malfunctions are found during diagnostics. This suggests that the technical side has no problems.

The violation of the freezing process of food occurs due to problems with the rubber gaskets between the chamber and the door. The gap leads to depressurization and cold leakage, which is generated by the compressor.

Important! In such a situation, the rubber contours are simply replaced. To fix them, use glue or epoxy.

Too cold

Sometimes the technician can incorrectly adjust the refrigerator. There is a violation of the factory temperature regime. It is unlikely that adjustment work will be possible - you will have to contact specialists.

Important! As practice shows, the temperature regime does not change immediately, but after the equipment has been in operation for some time. In addition, very severe freezing can occur due to refrigerant leakage.

Noise and vibration

The appearance of noise and rattling indicates an incorrect installation of the refrigeration unit, as a result, normal operation of the electric motor is impossible. This problem cannot be discarded, since there is practically no noise during the operation of modern equipment.

Important! To eliminate unnecessary noise and vibration, the equipment is exhibited using a building level.

Prophylaxis

In order for problems with the refrigerator to arise as rarely as possible, you need to follow some simple rules:

  • The regulator should not be in the extreme position (coldest). The temperature drop in the refrigerator will be insignificant, and the compressor will have to work at its limit, which will greatly reduce its service life. In addition, electricity consumption will increase.
  • Compressors often break down due to power surges. If such a phenomenon is not uncommon in your area, it is better to get a voltage transformer or uninterruptible power supply.
  • If you need to defrost the refrigerator, do not remove the ice with a knife or other sharp objects. Doing so may damage the tightness of the system and leak refrigerant.
  • The refrigerator is not designed for storing vegetable oil. It tends to evaporate, which leads to a loss of elasticity of the rubber gaskets.
  • Such a household appliance should not be installed next to a stove or heating radiators. This increases the load on the compressor.

Important! When carrying out all diagnostic and repair work, the refrigerator must be disconnected from the power supply.

A refrigerator is a collection of devices that are required to form a refrigeration cycle. As a result, the temperature in the chamber decreases and is maintained at this level for a certain time. In general, it is difficult to imagine our life without a refrigerator. But they are all different, both in principle of operation and in structure. Let's talk about how the refrigerator works. DIY repair is what we will focus on in this article.

General information and concepts

The working substance, in our case freon, boils at low temperatures. The principle of operation of any refrigeration equipment is based on this effect. At the same time, freon absorbs heat from the environment. There is a sealed chamber. It is filled up to a certain level with a refrigerant (freon) at the factory. During the operation of the equipment, its quantity is constant if the chamber is sealed. In the process of lowering the temperature, only the physical state of the refrigerant changes: it passes from liquid to vapor, and then back to liquid. In general, the refrigerator, the repair of which we will consider with our own hands, is a very complex design. It may seem that it is unlikely that it will be possible to repair any node on your own, but in fact it is not. If you look at it, then there are typical breakdowns that are most common. Home craftsmen figured out what was what for a long time, and shared it with the rest.

Equipment diagnostics

Agree, before you climb to disassemble the refrigerator, you need to deal with the problem. Sometimes it is not at all necessary to remove the motor-compressor, since the problem may lie elsewhere. So, diagnostics is the very first thing you should do. There are practically no difficulties here. If the equipment does not freeze or freezes, but does not create a sufficiently low temperature for storing food, then you should pay attention to the violation of the regulation or to the compressor. Depressurization and freon leakage is quite possible.

If the equipment simply does not turn on, then there are several options for solving the problem. For example, there is a common problem, which is the lack of power. It is enough to replace the cable, plug or socket, and everything will be fine. In other cases, the problems lie in the breakdown of the thermostat or other equipment. In principle, we will no longer talk in general about what a refrigerator is. Do-it-yourself repairs are definitely worth mentioning.

What if the equipment won't turn on?

We'll start with perhaps the most common problem. As noted above, there are commonplace cases when the plug comes off or the cable is bent. But this happens very, very rarely. Agree, there is a refrigerator and it is - and suddenly the mouse has bitten off the cable. It is unlikely that such an alignment is likely. It won't end well for mice either. Therefore, we will not consider such cases.

A problem that occurs quite often, but is not so easy to diagnose, is a problem with the power grid. For the normal operation of refrigeration equipment, a network voltage of at least 190-220 V. This problem can be solved by installing a stabilizer. If you have a voltmeter at home, plug it in and take a reading. This case should not be considered as a breakdown, because a protective mechanism is triggered.

If all else fails

It is worth noting that the repair of the Atlant, Stinol, Indesit refrigerators and other popular models may also be required for the following reason. The fact is that such equipment has a special defrost button. It often falls down or fails for other reasons. In any case, this leads either to the fact that there is no way to defrost, or, conversely, it is impossible to cancel the defrost. In any case, the solution to the problem is to replace the damaged button. To do this, you need to remove the old one, which can be done with a minimal set of tools, and install a new one.

We all buy refrigeration equipment with the expectation that it will work for a long time. This is often the case. But one day we notice the lack of cold in the cell. It may well be that over the long years of operation, the contacts have oxidized and they need to be cleaned.

Checking electrical circuits

As noted above, if the equipment is used for too long and moisture gets to its terminals to one degree or another, then it is likely that the connections have oxidized and do not have electrical contact. In this case, it is enough to carry out an elementary cleaning of the terminals, after which the operability will be restored.

In order to quickly detect the problem, we need an electrical diagram of the refrigerator. With its help, we carry out equipment dialing. If it turns out that the starting relay is faulty, then there is no point in repairing it. It is advisable to immediately buy a new one and replace the old one. But pay special attention to positioning. Before changing the relay, check the motor winding for resistance. If there is an open circuit, it must be eliminated and only then the start relay must be installed.

Repair of refrigerators "Indesit", "Atlant" and others

It is worth noting that refrigerators of domestic production, as well as from neighboring countries, say, Ukrainian or Belarusian, have approximately the same problems. In most cases, they consist in the fact that the refrigerator either does not freeze or freezes too much. Fortunately, the repair of the Atlant, Indesit, Biryusa and others refrigerators is almost identical.

So, in most cases, the problem associated with the lack of cold in the chamber appears due to the leakage of freon from the compressor. Typically, you can see such a leak by eye. If this was not done, then we proceed as follows. We pump out freon through a special tube on the compressor (it is usually sealed). Instead, we pump air under low pressure. The hiss of air from the hole can quickly find a leak. Here you will need a soldering iron, as there is no other way to deal with the hole in the tube. After everything is done, you can pump freon back, always in full.

Replacing the thermostat in the refrigerator

The lack of cold in the chamber can also be associated with a relay malfunction. To check whether this is the case, we proceed as follows. Cut the wires leading from the plug to the relay and from the relay to the refrigerator. After that, we close them together. If the equipment started to function, then we found the problem and can fix it. Repair work in this case is usually limited to replacing the old thermostat with a new one. There is nothing difficult in this. But the electrical circuit of the refrigerator will be very helpful. First, study it and only then get to work. In general, almost all equipment is repaired in the same way. The relay is located in one place in all models, both domestic and foreign. But the repair of Indesit refrigerators in connection with the weakening of frost in the chamber in most cases is associated with the freezing of the channels that serve to supply and remove air. In this case, normal defrosting will help you.

What if food is not frozen?

It often happens that the diagnostics did not reveal any malfunctions. But not because they are hidden somewhere deep, but because from the technical point of view they really do not exist. Often, problems with freezing food are that the compressor is working perfectly, but there is still not enough cold in the chamber. Often, such ailments occur already with the equipment that has been in operation for several years. The point here is most likely in the rubber gaskets between the doors and the camera. It happens that they do not seal the refrigeration compartment properly, because of the gap, depressurization and leakage of the cold generated by the compressor occur due to the gap. In this case, the repair of household refrigerators is performed quite simply and quickly. We go to the store and buy new rubber contours. We delete the old ones, and put the new ones. You can use glue or epoxy to plant them. After that, the problem should be resolved, and soon your food will freeze.

Is it freezing too much?

As it turns out, repairs of household refrigerators are often required, which were incorrectly adjusted by the craftsmen. To put it simply, the factory temperature regime has been violated, and in the refrigerator chamber there will no longer be the usual +2 degrees, but all -2. In this case, you do not need to look for a new compressor for the refrigerator and blame this element for all the troubles, since most often the matter is completely different. The relay is the problem. Unfortunately, it is not possible to carry out the adjustment work on your own, so a specialist will be needed. But, as practice shows, the temperature regime does not change immediately, but after a certain period of equipment operation. This suggests that the element is out of order and the factory settings have nothing to do with it. But if we changed the refrigerator relay, and this did not help, then the matter is somewhat more serious.

Eliminating noise and vibration

The effect of severe freezing can also occur due to refrigerant leaks. This is extremely rare, since often the compressor starts to freeze worse, but still a similar phenomenon is observed in some cases. But we have already figured out that in this case it is necessary to process the compressor for the refrigerator, it is not at all necessary to change it.

There are also other problems that significantly degrade the performance of the equipment, but at the same time they are not critical and can be eliminated by hand. For example, noise and rattling noise during operation indicates that the refrigeration unit is not installed correctly and the electric motor cannot function properly. This problem should not be taken for granted, because modern models are almost completely silent. Removing unnecessary noise and vibration is easy. We take a building level and put equipment on it.

Other malfunctions

Another common cause of breakdowns is an incorrectly positioned refrigerator protection relay. In this case, it must be installed correctly, according to the diagram. By the way, the same applies to the starting relay, which works on the principle of plate heating and gravity. The unit must be installed strictly according to the instructions. Set it upside down - and there will be trouble. It can even lead to damage to the compressor, which is not entirely cheap to change.

If an unpleasant odor appears, this also indicates a technical malfunction. Often the problem is that after a while the drain pipe becomes clogged. Cleaning the tube is quick and easy. To do this, it can be blown out with compressed air or rinsed. After doing this, the problem should be fixed.

Difficult but possible

Here we are with you and figured out how the refrigerator works and is restored in the event of a malfunction. DIY repair at home is possible in most cases. I would like to say even more: sometimes it is simply necessary to do such things. This way you can gain valuable experience that you can use in the future. Of course, there are various modifications and generations of refrigeration equipment. One-chamber, two-chamber, etc. They are all different from each other. But the principle of operation of such a technique is always the same. This is a compressor that circulates refrigerant around the circuit. At the same time, a constant temperature is maintained using automation. There is also a system of pipes through which air passes. If one of them gets clogged, then forced circulation becomes difficult, which is why various problems arise.

Conclusion

In general, if you use a voltage stabilizer, then there should be no problems with the electrics. If dust or metal particles get into the compressor, it will have to be replaced. In this case, flushing and purging is unlikely to help. Here the situation is similar to an air conditioner.

Thus, this is all there is to say about the refrigerator. Do-it-yourself repairs are often not very difficult, the main thing is to get to work, have diagrams at hand and act carefully.
