S7 water protection. Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge - underwater and above it

A few days ago at the MWC 2016 exhibition in Barcelona, one of the most anticipated smartphones of the year was presented - the new generation of Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. In the Korean company, having looked at the financial statements of past years and the elusive market, they approached the development of new gadget models very thoroughly, reworking all the main nodes, taking into account most of the wishes of their fans.

Samsung followed the path of Apple, turning the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge into an alternative to the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s plus: leaving the display size of the former at 5.1 inches, while the latter, on the contrary, increased to 5.5 inches from those 5.1 in Galaxy S6 edge. Now it will be much easier to compare different solutions of the two market leaders.

Appearance and design

In addition to increasing the size of the Galaxy S7 edge, the appearance has not changed much compared to the previous generation gadget models, Samsung has only finalized some points that caused complaints from users. So, in particular, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge had “sharp” edges that made it difficult to comfortably hold the devices in your hand, and this also applies to the back covers of smartphones like the Galaxy Note 5.

The body is made of magnesium alloy, which reduced the weight of the devices, the bezels on the sides of the display were also reduced, in the Galaxy S7 edge their thickness is only 0.87 mm. Also, due to the refinement of the camera, it was possible to hide it inside the case, and now it protrudes by a slight 0.46 mm, in previous models this figure was 1.44 mm!

In general, both Galaxy S7 and S7 edge gadgets have become more voluminous and attractive, the back cover will be protected by a unique 3D glass - Corning Gorilla Glass 4. Three colors will be available: "black diamond", "dazzling platinum" and "titanium silver".

Specifications

Naturally, not only the appearance of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge has undergone modernization, but also the internal components of the phones.

Display

The new display, in other ways, like the display of previous flagships, remains the pride of Samsung. We have already told you what the size will be - it is 5.1 inches for the Galaxy S7 and 5.5 inches for the Galaxy S7 edge. Both Super AMOLED screens have a Quad HD resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels, with a density of 577 and 550 ppi. Compared to the Galaxy S6, the new display surpasses it in several ways: the maximum brightness has increased by 29%, readability in bright conditions has been improved, and power consumption has been reduced.

A new feature has appeared - "Always On Display", it will always show the necessary information on the display, such as clock, calendar, notifications, etc. At the same time, Samsung claims that this option will consume only 1% of the battery charge per hour.

Camera

The main camera of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge lost in megapixels, but not in quality. Instead of 16 MP, it now has a 12 MP module, but at the same time a number of other characteristics have been improved, which in the end will allow you to take cooler pictures. The sensor is enlarged - a matrix of BRITECELL's own production with a resolution of 24 MP is used, at the output, adjacent pixels are combined, and an improved image is formed that is half the size. Pixel size - 1.4 microns.

The camera aperture has been upgraded, Galaxy S7 / S7 edge - ƒ / 1.7, for example, for the iPhone iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s plus, this figure is 2.2.

The first use of Dual Pixel technology, borrowed from SLR cameras, allows each pixel to be used not only for image acquisition, but also for phase focusing, which increases shutter speed, focusing time has been reduced from 0.85 seconds to 0.2 seconds in low light conditions. illumination.

The selfie camera has an LED flash.

In general, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge are better and faster, not only in good light, but in the dark. Added manual settings.

Processor and Memory

Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, depending on the region, will be released either on the basis of Exynos 8890 Octa or Qualcomm Snapdragon 820. At the presentation, they assured that the overall performance compared to the “sixes” increased by 30%, and the graphics by 60% . The processors are based on 8 cores: half of them operate at a frequency of 2.6 GHz, and the other half at 1.6 GHz.

4 GB RAM will help processors in performance, however, experts have already managed to conduct the first tests of the proposed prototypes and CPU-Z “sees” only 3.58.

In the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, the microSD memory slot returned, which for strange reasons disappeared for one generation, the maximum card size is 200 GB! At the same time, the tray was made universal by combining it with nanoSIM. Configurations are now possible: memory card + nanoSIM or nanoSIM + nanoSIM.

Among other important features, we note the appeared cooling of the processor - in the form of a copper heat-conducting tube. Sony already uses such a system in its smartphones, and you can also find a similar one in the Lumia 950.

Battery

The batteries of the new Samsung flagships have also increased in capacity, so the Galaxy S7 will receive 3000 mAh instead of 2550 mAh, and the Galaxy S7 edge will get 3600 mAh instead of 2600. According to the first tests that appeared on the network, the Galaxy S7 can play Full HD videos with the Wi-Fi and on the brightest screen for more than 17 hours!

At the same time, support for new technologies for accelerated battery charging has appeared - 4 hours of work in 10 minutes of recharging. The general battery charging data from the specification is as follows: for wired charging from 0 to 100% in 90 minutes, and S7 edge - in 100 minutes, for wireless (supports the Qi standard and others) - 130 and 155 minutes, respectively.

security

The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge have again returned to their IP68 protection standard, which means that smartphones will easily withstand dust and moisture, now you can safely submerge phones for 30 minutes to a depth of 1.5 meters.

The gadgets have already managed to disassemble and find out how the protection that has appeared works. The back cover of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge is very tightly glued to the metal frame with double-sided adhesive tape, there are no rubber gaskets. A reasonable remark immediately follows that if the gadgets are subjected to prolonged overheating, the glue may lose its protective properties. At the same time, the tray for SIM and microSD cards is rubberized. The speaker, in addition to the rubber gasket, also has a special protective mesh.

Price and start of sales

Sales of new Samsung flagships in Russia will start on March 18, the official cost of gadgets has already been announced - 49,990 rubles for the Galaxy S7 model and 59,990 rubles for the Galaxy S7 edge, for a model with 32 GB of memory. You can pre-order from February 22 to March 17, while those who buy the gadget in the first three days will be presented with a Gear VR virtual reality helmet, the cost of which is $99, which is very good!

Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are the flagship smartphones of the famous South Korean manufacturer, and they meet all modern quality standards. Moreover, they are not afraid of dust or moisture, being protected according to the IP68 standard, which means complete dust protection, as well as the ability to stay under water at a depth of one and a half meters for half an hour. At the same time, the functionality of the smartphone does not suffer, you can safely use it, and if you have a wireless bluetooth headset, you can even talk.

And if a year ago we were worried that there would be trouble with Samsung, now everything is “ok”, you can not be afraid of anything. Here are some examples.

Soon after the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge went on sale, some desperate users began to experiment on the new product, subjecting it to various tests and testing its strength. One American video blogger decided to check how long his Galaxy S7 would last under water, put it in a jar of water, turned on the camcorder and went to sleep. The smartphone behaved as if nothing had happened, and simply turned off closer to the morning when it ran out of battery power.

And the employees of the mobile operator T-Mobile conducted their own experiment - they took the Galaxy S7 with the operator's SIM card preinstalled in it and unpacked it right under water, in the pool. The smartphone turned on without any problems and successfully demonstrated that it can receive calls, send SMS, connect to the Internet, show videos and generally do everything it should, being one and a half meters under the water surface.

As these experiments and others have shown, the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge don't just meet the IP68 rating - they're capable of so much more. These smartphones allow you to dive to a solid depth, and, most likely, nothing will happen to them, but if a problem does occur, the case is unlikely to be recognized as a warranty case, so such experiments should be done only at your own peril and risk.

While the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are waterproof, it's still not perfect. So, in the course of some other experiments, it was revealed that the speakers of these smartphones, after staying at a depth of one and a half meters for the thirty minutes declared by the manufacturer, began to work worse and distort the sound. The problem itself was eliminated after a while, when the smartphones dried up. At the same time, the screens worked perfectly all this time.

Another drawback is the incomplete waterproofness of the charging port of the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. It has moisture sensors, and having bathed your smartphone, you won’t be able to charge it through the cord - it will give an error and a message stating that moisture has been detected in the port. The options here are water - either use wireless charging, or wait until the charging port dries out, or carefully (!!!) dry it with a hairdryer.

The Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are really well-protected smartphones from life's troubles such as dust and dirt. and water. They are able to cope with a lot, but still it is worth taking care of an expensive communicator and not putting it to the test beyond those that were carried out by the manufacturer.

Good day, dear visitor. Most likely, you are interested in some information related to the Galaxy S7 and its contact with water. We hasten to say that you have come to the right place. In this material, you will learn everything about the level of moisture protection of the Galaxy S7, and what is recommended to do if water gets into it.

Galaxy S7 waterproof level

All tricks are done by professionals 😀

The developers of Samsung have provided the seventh galaxy with the highest level of dust and moisture protection IP68 to date. These figures are indicated for a reason, they are responsible for the high level of both indicators.

What opportunities does it give the South Korean smartphone? Of course, it's hard to believe, but the Galaxy S7, like an amphibian, is able to dive one and a half meters deep, stay there for up to half an hour, and, moreover, function!

It is important!

Warranty service does not cover the failure of the smartphone due to contact with water. The water protection of the Galaxy S7 is designed to improve its safety level, not to test it for working in water.

Although despite all the warnings, there are daredevils who can afford to drown the Galaxy S7. With their help, we learned that you can shoot underwater. The rest of the functions would probably work if they had mechanical buttons, and not activated through the touch screen.

What to do if your Galaxy S7 gets water

We do not recommend repeating

If situations such as falling into the rain, or talking during a snowfall are not terrible for a smartphone, you should beware of its complete immersion. Most often this happens on vacation, or in the bathroom. It is worth noting that sea salt water is much more dangerous for the Galaxy S7 and its chips, as it begins to corrode its paths. After such a bath, the device can quickly become unusable.

On a note!

When you try to charge a Galaxy S7 that has recently been submerged in water, you will see a notification on its screen: moisture detected. This was triggered by moisture sensors that are located in the charging slot. In this case, you need to wait until the smartphone dries out, and only then charge it.

In the case when water still got into the Galaxy S7, do not panic. You need to turn off the phone as soon as possible and put it where the cool breeze is walking. In no case, do not lay it out on the open rays of the scorching sun, as well as be smart and warm it with a hairdryer. In a cool draft, it is enough for him to lie down for a couple of days. If you want to achieve maximum results, then take a container of rice and put your smartphone in it. Then put it under a draft in the same way. Rice draws moisture very well, this is a proven method.

Smartphone Galaxy S7 Edge from Samsung - perhaps the most original and at the same time - the most expensive smartphone on the market today. The device combines a huge number of different innovative features. And yet, during the testing process, we decided to focus only on the most important and unusual characteristics - design, camera and moisture protection. These three parameters really distinguish this model from many other gadgets.

But is it worth it to go for a rounded display? And what does IP68 moisture protection actually provide? And how good is the camera in this ultra-expensive smartphone? In other words, if you go on a trip, is it worth taking a traditional compact camera with you, or can you get similar quality photos using a smartphone camera?

Devices with a curved display surface appeared a few years ago and it was Korean manufacturers who became the pioneers in this segment. But if LG curved its Flex around the transverse axis, then Samsung slightly rounded the side edges of the display along the longitudinal axis. The result is a very stylish and unusual appearance, in comparison with which smartphones with a regular flat screen look somehow simple and even, to some extent, archaic. And besides, the manufacturer has supplemented the series of Edge models with a special software function for the user interface.

Galaxy S7 Edge- not the first Samsung model with a beveled screen. Before that, there was an S6 Edge Plus device with a similar profile. However, the new model has a number of important improvements and advanced features. For example, what is at least worth microSD card support(up to 200 GB, according to the manufacturer), upgraded camera, 3600 mAh battery and IP68 waterproof rating. In addition, it is worth noting the option of background operation of the display (always-on mode), which makes it more convenient to view various notifications.

As for the flagship model Galaxy S7, which was announced in parallel, it differs little from the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge in terms of technical characteristics. The main difference is the smaller screen diagonal (5.1 inches versus 5.5) and a less capacious battery (3000 versus 3600 mAh). And, of course, in the Galaxy S7, the display is completely flat, without beveled edges.

"Be special!"

The most important design feature of the Galaxy S7 Edge is the rounded edges. The radius of curvature is about 5 mm. Under the screen is a hardware Home button (it also has a built-in fingerprint scanner), above the screen - the front camera, speaker and proximity sensor. On the bottom side there is a headphone jack, a microUSB connector, a loudspeaker and a microphone, on the top there is a slot for installing a SIM card and a microSD card, as well as a noise-canceling microphone. On the left side there is a volume rocker, on the right - only the lock button.

What benefits does the user of the Edge model get? Samsung developers have written several software features specifically for this model. For example, by swiping from the right edge of the screen to the center opposite the lock button, the user can bring up the panel Tasks Edge with buttons for quick access to certain program functions, a panel Apps Edge with quick access to the programs you use most often using the side screen, a list of contacts from the phone book and a selection of news.

Design Galaxy S7 Edge: on the one hand, stylish and original, on the other hand, the side edges are sensitive to touch, which is not always convenient when working with the phone

By default, only 4 Edge panels are connected, however, in the settings you can additionally add a summary of sports, financial news (though only in English, based on Yahoo! materials), a panel with travel applications such as a compass, a ruler and a flashlight, a weather report and other applications.

It is noteworthy that the screen Edge works even when locked. For example, in the Always-on mode on the right edge, you can display the date, time and battery charge, in addition, read various notifications, as well as news. The set of panels is extensive, besides, you can adjust their location, size and transparency.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge has a microSD card slot. But the second SIM-card in this particular model cannot be put

Obviously, the pop-up Edge-type sidebar can be implemented on a smartphone with a regular flat screen, but it would not be so convenient and stylish. But the following function is only possible on a device with a screen with rounded edges: when the smartphone lies with the display down, its side part pulsates purple, orange, or other color to indicate a call.

Tasks Edge panel lets you view SMS messages without unlocking

All of the above can be attributed to the advantages of the Edge model. But what about the disadvantages? Some discomfort due to the need to be extremely careful to take the smartphone by the side edge. Actually, a gadget with a touch screen in an unlocked state should always be taken carefully so as not to accidentally launch any application or even dial a number. However, for novice users, there was a good rule of thumb - any touchphone can be safely held by the side edges. Regarding the Galaxy S7 Edge - not everything is so simple, because even the side faces are sensitive here. To this feature of the device take a long time to get used to and not the fact that it will be to your taste.

Waterproof and underwater photography

The Galaxy S7 Edge is IP68 water-resistant, which means it can be submerged in depth less than 1.5 m for up to 30 minutes, plus full dust tightness. The MicroUSB connector, as well as the openings for the microphone, speaker and other elements are sealed from water, and no plugs are required. The only important thing is to check that the cover of the SIM and MicroSD card slots is tightly closed. After that, the smartphone can be safely dipped into the water.

We admit that it was not so easy to decide to drown the most expensive smartphone on the market. But the technology didn't disappoint.

Under water, the capacitive touch screen begins to behave inadequately: the display practically does not respond to pressing with a finger, but they can launch various applications randomly and spontaneously open windows. But the hardware buttons work quite correctly, so you can take a photo or video underwater: Double-clicking the Home button switches the smartphone to photo mode, and pressing the volume rocker releases the shutter or starts video recording (depending on what is set in the parameters). But even so, the uncontrolled behavior of the touch screen sometimes leads to annoying situations when video recording suddenly turns off, or switches to another mode. For example, one attempt at underwater video shooting unexpectedly resulted in the digital zoom being turned on at full power.

When the device is pulled out of the water, the display comes to life, but, like in any other smartphone with capacitive sensor technology, it does not behave very correctly until it dries. In general, the Galaxy S7 Edge would be much more comfortable to use underwater if the manufacturer provided for a special underwater mode (connected, say, by pressing the Home button four times), in which the touch screen is blocked from any pressing.

Under water, the device shoots well, and very spectacular pictures can also be obtained at the “junction” of air and water: when the smartphone is almost in the water, and only the camera is a couple of centimeters above the water. However, the device needs water protection not only for underwater photography- it is also very important that you can take great overwater shots, say, standing in the water on the beach. Moreover, it is possible absolutely not to be afraid for the "health" of the device, because even if the splash of water heavily floods the smartphone, it will not harm it in any way. In general, reliable moisture protection is now in trend - according to rumors, the new iPhone 7 will also be as protected as possible from water and dust.

Very spectacular shots can be taken at the "junction" of air and water (click on the image to view the original photo)

In the course of testing, our editors conducted an unusual experiment, starting the playback of a video with sound through YouTube and immediately immersing the phone in water. The results are as follows: playback continued without problems, but the sound instantly became quieter, which is quite logical. After removing the phone from the water, the side speaker wheezed for some time until it completely dried out, after which everything the audio characteristics of the phone are fully restored. By the way, the speaker dries for a long time, so it's better to blow it out immediately after pulling the phone out of the water.

Sample video taken underwater and above water

Video shot at 240 fps and then slowed down to standard speed. An important advantage of the device with IP68 protection is that you can shoot in the water, and not at all be afraid for the “health” of the device.

Need to recharge? No wires

The development of wireless charging technology for Qi smartphones (“Chi” or “Qi”) was announced back in 2008, however, there are still very few devices that support this method of charging (mostly such devices are produced by Samsung, Huawei and LG) and usually premium segment products. Recall that Qi is the standard for inductive energy transfer over a distance of up to 4cm, the technology uses electromagnetic induction between two flat coils. One of them is the base and is connected to the power source, and the second is inside the device being charged and is the receiver.

Qi technology uses electromagnetic induction between two flat coils

The advantage of wireless charging - convenience, because you do not need to insert a miniature plug into a miniature hole, Yes, and guess with the right side. Everything is simple here: put the device approximately in the center of the charger - and charging starts automatically. The disadvantage of this technology is wireless storage recharges battery slowly, and the process itself takes much longer than with a wired connection.

Just put the device approximately in the center of the charger - and the recharging process starts automatically

It is worth noting that Samsung introduced its own wireless chargers last year (for the Galaxy S6 model). The charger is a plastic “washer” that can be connected to a standard AC adapter with a microUSB connector (technical requirements: 2A and 5V output current). If the smartphone is placed on the “washer”, the charging bezel starts to glow.

Full charge Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge with 3600mAh battery via wireless charging took 3 hours 35 minutes. For comparison, at wired connection and when using an identical power supply, the smartphone is fully charged from scratch in 1 hour 55 minutes. And it took just 1.5 hours to charge up to 80%.

Megapixels at gunpoint

A brand new camera with a high quality sensor is the pride of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. A number of innovations allowed the developers to achieve amazing (as for this size) image quality. Firstly, the camera uses proprietary Britecell technology, which allows you to get great pictures in low light conditions. Secondly, developers reduced the number of megapixels to 12(the S6 used a 16-megapixel main camera) and thus achieved a low level of noise. The pixel size in the new sensor is 1.4 microns.

Regarding the decrease in the number of pixels, it is worth recalling the following rule: an increase in the number of pixels in the resolution characteristic of the camera should grow along with the size of the sensor matrix. If the area of the matrix and the quality of the lens in two camera models are identical in size, but at the same time, the number of pixels in one of them has increased, then most likely this will only add noise, but not at all. does not improve picture quality. Therefore, neither manufacturers nor consumers should still chase the number of megapixels.

For faster focusing in the S7 Edge - for the first time in a camera phone- Uses Dual Pixel technology. In fact, this is an improved phase autofocus, which involves the division of the optical path into two channels with their subsequent comparison. Focusing is based on the analysis of the phase difference in these two channels. Usually, a special sensor is responsible for this function, which is located near the matrix at a similar distance from the lens.

Previously, this method was used only in full-size SLR cameras, because. required the use of additional sensors and their precise location. But the trend towards smaller semiconductor components has made it possible to install sensors directly on the matrix. But as a rule, only 5-10% of the total number of photosensitive points are equipped with such sensors. IN Galaxy S7 Edge has become possible to equip each pixel with a separate sensor. Thus, each effective pixel on the sensor surface consists of two independent photodetectors, which, in order to perform phase detection autofocus, capture the light flux reflected from the object. This approach ensures high speed and accuracy of focusing.

Macro photography in daylight. (Click on image to view original photo)

The aperture of the lens in the S7 Edge camera has increased up to f/1.7 and this is a very good characteristic, which is found only in expensive interchangeable lenses for "DSLRs". In practice, this means the ability to "blur" the background in portrait or macro photography, as well as get a good shot in poor visibility conditions.

The lens is equipped with optical image stabilization. The LED flash here is only single, but very bright.

Photo mode “Food”: the subject in the center is in focus, everything else is blurry. In addition, the image is converted to a warmer one.

The S7 Edge camera supports recording in RAW format, which provides additional opportunities for image processing. Although it is unlikely that you will often need to use this function. Firstly, to work with RAW, you will need some experience and knowledge. Secondly, sometimes the JPEG converter built into the camera generates a photo better than manual “pulling” from RAW (besides, RAW files are large and take up a lot of space on the memory card). But the presence of the RAW format already indicates that the camera is above average in terms of its characteristics. In cheap cameras, RAW support is usually not available.

Video collage: 4 different 6-second clips combined in one frame

It is worth noting that the S7 Edge photo module uses a lot of software technologies for processing and enhancing photos, which significantly affects the quality of the final image. The device supports ten shooting modes, the most interesting and unusual for a smartphone (from our point of view) are described below.

The world through HDR

New generations of smartphones usually have a shooting mode HDR(High Dynamic Range - high dynamic range). In this mode, two (or more) consecutive shots of a given object with different exposures are taken with the subsequent program layout of these shots into a single photo. But in what cases is it optimal to use such a function?

Everyone knows what happens if you take a picture of, say, the top of a building against a bright sky: it will turn out to be too dark with hardly distinguishable details. Or vice versa, the building itself will come out well in the picture, but the sky in the photo will turn into an overexposed white spot - depending on what exposure was chosen. Mode HDR lets you combine two photos to create a single image, in which both the building and the sky are clearly visible.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge camera supports shooting in HDR mode - it can be activated in the top menu of the camera. Moreover, this mode works great here and can be recommended for any landscape shooting in the daytime - but try to shoot while leaning on some kind of stable support or using a tripod. And you should not use this mode when shooting moving objects. As mentioned above, HDR combines multiple exposures of the same scene; but if these scenes are dynamic and changing, then in the end you can get a completely unacceptable result.

Choose focus

Another mode built on a automatic software combination of two serially taken photos. The first shot is taken with the focus on the near object, the second - with the focus on the far object. Further, both pictures are programmatically combined and on the display you can choose the photo with which focus you want to choose: near or far. Unfortunately, such photos can only be viewed on the display of the Galaxy S7 Edge itself; when downloading to a PC and using standard image viewers, alas, it will not be possible to select far or near focus.

Virtual tour

In this mode, you can take a photo of the object with 360 degree view. To shoot, you need to go around the object, trying to keep it strictly at one point in the frame. At the output, we get a 3D model of the object, which can be rotated around the axis by touching the display with a finger and viewed from any side. Again, when downloading to a PC, the virtual tour effect is lost.

Time lapse video

The Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge is equipped with a very interesting and unusual time-lapse photography feature for a smartphone (also called “time-lapse”, from the English. Time-lapse photography). In fact, this is a type frame-by-frame slow motion, and the intervals between frames are equal to each other. In the time-lapse mode of the S7 Edge, the video shooting speed slows down by 15-30 times compared to the standard one - depending on the degree of illumination, the slowdown parameter is selected automatically and is not manually adjustable.

Time-lapse mode: It took about 30 minutes of shooting to shoot a 30-second video. The rainbow is visible for the first 5 seconds - in fact, it could be observed for about 5 minutes.

Thanks to the time-lapse mode, you can shoot processes that proceed relatively slowly, for example, the movement of clouds, sunrise and sunset, melting ice, the opening of a flower bud, etc. It should be noted that time-lapse photography undergoes subsequent software processing, which is designed to improve the quality of the final picture . For example, the “jitter” of objects in the frame is removed, caused, for example, by the fact that trees that are swaying in the wind got into the frame when shooting.

It is, of course, unrealistic to shoot a high-quality video “by hand” in time-lapse mode. Necessary use a tripod, or otherwise securely fix the smartphone.

QuadHD display - why is it needed?

The Galaxy S7 Edge is equipped with amazing quality 5.5" Super AMOLED display that supports resolution 2560 x 1440 pixels(QuadHD). The pixel density is 534 ppi. It would seem - why so many? After all, the flagship devices of other companies usually contain displays with a resolution of no more than FullHD (for example, the pixel density in the iPhone 6s Plus is 401 ppi). And even to the eye, the difference between FullHD and QuadHD is almost imperceptible.

Samsung officially unveiled its new flagship smartphones Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge at the opening of MWC 2016. All the latest leaks have been confirmed, including about the design of the devices, which has not changed much compared to the Galaxy S6.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 retained a 5.1-inch screen, while the Galaxy S7 edge got a 5.5-inch display with curved edges. The displays have a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels and support pressure recognition.

Differences in design from last year's models are insignificant. Samsung has reduced the size of the camera, which now stands out less from the body. The back panel of smartphones is now rounded, like the Galaxy Note 5. The body of the Galaxy S7 is made of magnesium alloy, which reduced the weight of the device and made it stronger in bending. In addition, the device has narrower bezels to the left and right of the display.

Major changes await inside smartphones. The devices boast support for microSD memory cards up to 200 GB, extended battery life and protection against water and dust according to the IP68 standard. Depending on the release region, the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge are based on their own Exynos 8890 or Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor. Samsung claims that compared to the previous generation of flagships, the processor power has increased by 30%, graphics - by 60%. The equipment of smartphones includes 4 GB of RAM.

Instead of a 16-megapixel camera, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge received a module with a resolution of 12-megapixels and an enlarged sensor. A significant part of the presentation was devoted to cameras. As told in Samsung, the devices for the first time use DualPixel technology, which was previously presented in professional cameras. The aperture ratio of the lens has increased - F / 1.7. As a result, the gadget is said to shoot better in the dark and focus faster in difficult conditions.

An important point concerns the comparative dimensions of last year and current devices. If the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S7 are almost identical (the display diagonal has not changed), then the 5.5-inch Galaxy S7 edge is a cross between the 5.1-inch Galaxy S6 edge and the 5.7-inch Galaxy S6 edge +.

In addition to the different display diagonals, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge received batteries of different capacities: 3000 mAh and 3600 mAh, respectively. Wireless charging allows you to charge the batteries in 2 and 2.2 hours, respectively. Separately, Samsung spoke about the always-on display function, which allows you to always show useful information on the smartphone screen - the current time and date, battery charge, notifications. It is claimed that it consumes a negligible amount of energy and has almost no effect on the overall battery life.

Sales of Samsung Galaxy S7 will start in Europe at a price of 699 euros, Galaxy S7 edge - for 799 euros. In Russia, the recommended retail price of the devices will be 49,990 and 59,990 rubles, respectively. The pre-order for new items will open on Monday, the global release of smartphones on March 11. In a number of countries, those who pre-order will receive Gear VR virtual reality glasses for free.
