Greetings, dear friends! In this short article I will show you how to update your router's firmware!

It so happens that the speed of the Internet is several times lower than that declared by your Internet provider. This often happens when you distribute the Internet through a wi-fi router.

In order to make sure that the provider is not deceiving you, you need to create a VPN connection by connecting the cable not through a router, but directly to your computer. If it's not about the provider, then the old firmware is one of the reasons why your router cuts the speed!

I will show it using the Asus RT-N10 router as an example, but this instruction is also suitable for other Asus models. Now let's go directly to the firmware update by following a very simple step-by-step guide!

Instructions

Step number 1 - go to the router

We drive in the following ip in the address bar:

  • 192.168.1.1

and enter the data - login and password, by default it is:

  • login: admin
  • password: admin

Then he clicks - enter.

Step # 2 - make a copy of the settings

Now you need to save a copy of the settings! This is done in case the new firmware turns out to be with errors or fails during the update. Having a copy of the settings, you do not have to re-fill the fields, register passwords, and so on .. In the left menu, select additional settings:

Now we save the file with the settings to your computer by clicking on the appropriate button:

Step # 3 - updating the firmware

Now, at the very top, clicks on the firmware version:

Now you need to copy the product identifier (your router):

We do not close the page, in a new tab we open, for example, Yandex, drive in the request - "asus" and go to the official website:

Now, in the search on the site, enter the previously copied identifier, click on the search button and go to the support page:

Now you need to download the archive with the firmware, for this, follow the steps marked in the picture with numbers (decoding of the numbers under the picture):

  1. select the tab - Drivers and Utilities
  2. select your operating system
  3. click on Firmware
  4. download the archive by clicking on - Global

after that, unzip it, there should be a file with the extension .trx Now, on the tab from which we copied the product ID, select the previously received file and click - Send:

After that, you will need to wait 2-3 minutes, at the end the router will reboot itself, and a new firmware version should appear at the top of the page. That's all it takes to update the firmware!

When finished, check your internet speed. P.S. updating the firmware does not guarantee that the router will cut the speed less, since the firmware is not the only reason, the router itself may be to blame, in this case only buying a new, more powerful and expensive router will help.

When the fiber was passed to me, I went to the store and bought the first router I came across - ASUS RT-N10 +. Here it is:

This miracle cost 1,300 rubles. The native firmware was very convenient, with a "housekeeping" interface, but it slowed down. After a couple of years, it turned out that this device no longer digests speeds of more than 30 megabits - the torrent client at this speed hung it almost completely.

Then I started looking for alternative firmware. The most famous is DD-WRT. I put the assembly under my router, but I was disappointed - the speed of work did not increase (as I found out later, the drivers were used the same as in the native firmware), and those settings that were previously done with a couple of clicks (like port forwarding for IPTV) can be was done only through editing the configs. And this despite the fact that the web interface is simply overloaded with all sorts of options. I did not find any other firmware at that time and scored on this matter.

But more recently I came across and, lo and behold, they had an assembly for my hardware! All the necessary settings remained in place, and the router stopped cutting the speed (it turns out, I have 20 megabits for transmission). I'll tell you about the installation.

First, you need to understand the router model. Asus has released about ten different RT-N10s - B1, C1, D1, LX and others. You can view the version on the sticker on the bottom of the router. The firmware is guaranteed to fit RT-N10 +, RT-N10 B1, RT-N10 C1 and is guaranteed not to fit a simple RT-N10 (but there is a firmware for it from Oleg). I can't say anything concrete about other models.

Now let's move on to the firmware itself. The forums usually offer one of the options:

  • Installing DD-WRT through the web interface of the native firmware and then installing Wive-NG through it.
  • Fill via JTAG
  • TFTP firmware

The first option did not work for me - the enemy file did not want to sew DD-WRT. For the second, I do not have a cable, and the third I have not tried - I'm not sure if it can be flashed at all through this interface (UPD: you can still). Fortunately, everything turned out to be easier with my router - there is a recovery utility through which you can flash anything. So, let's begin:

  1. We download the assembly (we are interested in Wive_WR-150N-RT3050-1T1R), as well as a set of utilities from the Asus website (UPD: it looks like the utilities from the site disappeared, I re-downloaded them to Ya.Disk) or from the disk from the kit. I also advise you to download the official firmware - if something goes wrong, you can return everything back.
  2. Install utilities. An important point - the recovery program is working only over a wired connection, so look for a network cable.
  3. Turn off the power of the router, hold down Reset and turn it on. You need to hold the button for about ten seconds.
  4. In the computer itself, go to "Network Connections" and open the properties of the adapter through which the router is connected. Click Internet Protocol Version 4 → Properties and specify the address 192.168.1.2 and the mask 255.255.255.0. I recommend disabling all other adapters - because of them, the program may not see the router.
  5. We launch the utility and select the firmware. I think that the question interface will not raise:

  1. We are stitching. At the end, you need to wait a while until the router boots up. If the wait is delayed and the web interface still does not open, try disconnecting and reconnecting the power.
  2. Login and password to the web interface - Admin / Admin, both with a capital letter. If after entering the data you see something similar to the screenshot below, then the firmware was successful. If nothing works and you want to return it as it was, just repeat steps 2-6, but with the official firmware. Also, do not forget to return to "Network Connections" and return the settings as they were - to automatically obtain IP and DNS addresses.

I will not describe the interface, everything is quite intuitive and familiar to those who have set up a router at least once. I will dwell only on some points:


ASUS routers are characterized by a very long service life. Even morally obsolete models released more than five years ago can adequately perform their functions today, but one should not forget about the occasional need to maintain the firmware that controls the operation of the device. Let's consider how to update or downgrade the firmware version of ASUS RT-N10 router, as well as restore the device's system software to work if it is damaged.

It is not difficult to flash Asus routers - the manufacturer has created simple tools available for mastering by each user, and has simplified the procedure for replacing the firmware of one version to another as much as possible. Please note:

All the manipulations described below are carried out by the user at his own discretion, at his own peril and risk! Only the owner of the device is responsible for the results of the operations performed, including negative ones!

In fact, the actual firmware of the ACS RT-N10 is very simple and lasts only a few minutes, but to ensure this state of affairs, as well as to avoid failures and errors in the process, it is necessary to carry out preliminary preparation. Let's take a look at the steps to ensure a quick, secure, and hassle-free reinstallation of the router's firmware. At the same time, users who are faced with the solution of the problem under consideration for the first time will be able to learn about the basic techniques used to interact with the software part of the routers.

Admin access

Almost all manipulations with the router are performed using the administrative panel of the device (admin panel). The machine settings can be accessed from any Internet browser.


As you can see, to enter the admin panel, you need to enter the IP address, username and password. If all of these parameters or one of them have been changed and unknown (possibly forgotten) values ​​have been assigned to them during the initial setup of the device or during its operation, you will not be able to access the router functions. The way out of the above situation is to completely reset the device to the factory settings, which will be discussed below, and in the case of a forgotten username / password, this is the only way out. But to find out the IP address of the router, if it is unknown, you can use a software tool from ASUS - Device discovery.

  1. Go to the technical support page of ASUS RT-H10 using the link indicated above. Dropdown "Please specify the OS" select the version of Windows installed on your PC.
  2. In chapter "Utilities" click the button "Download" opposite the name of the product "ASUS Device Discovery", which will download the archive with the distribution of the utility to the PC disk.
  3. Unzip the resulting file and go to the folder with the file Discovery.exe, open it to start the installation of the tool.
  4. Click "Further" in the first four windows of the installation wizard before copying the files.
  5. Wait until the installation of Asus Device Discovery is completed and click "Ready" in the finish window of the installer without unchecking the checkbox "Launching Device Recovery".
  6. The utility will start automatically and immediately start scanning the networks to which the PC is connected for ASUS devices.
  7. Once RT-N10 is detected, the ASUS Device Discovery window will display the model name of the router, along with the SSID, the IP address and subnet mask to look for.
  8. You can go to authorization in the router's admin panel after finding the parameter values ​​directly from the Device Discovery utility - to do this, click the button "Configuration (C)".

    This will launch a browser showing the login page for the admin panel.

Backup and restore parameters

The first thing it is recommended to do after logging into the ASUS RT-N10 web interface is to create a backup copy of the parameters that provide Internet access and the functioning of the local network. Having a backup of the settings will allow you to quickly restore their values, and therefore, the operability of the network, the center of which is the router, if the device is reset or incorrect configuration is performed.

Reset

In fact, flashing is not a panacea for all router malfunctions and does not guarantee that ASUS RT-N10 will function exactly as the user needs after the procedure. In some cases, the culprit for the incorrect "behavior" of the router is the incorrect definition of its parameters in a specific network, and to ensure normal operation, it is enough to return the device to the factory state and configure it again.

Among other things, and as mentioned above, a reset can help restore lost access to the administrative panel. The return of the parameters of the ACS RT-N10 to the "default" state can be done by going along one of two paths.

Admin panel

  1. Log in to the web interface and go to the section "Administration".
  2. Open the tab "Restore / save / load settings".
  3. Click the button "Restore" next to the function name "Factory settings".
  4. Confirm the received request to start the process of resetting the router firmware to the factory state.
  5. Wait for the procedure to complete and the ASUS RT-N10 reboot.

Log in to the admin panel of the router and find out the build number of the firmware installed in the device in order to further navigate the release dates of the firmware, and also to understand if an update is required. At the top of the main page of the web interface there is an item "Firmware version"- the numbers indicated next to this name mean the build number of the software installed in the device.
  2. Open, by clicking on the link under the introduction to this manual, the official web page created to provide technical support to the owners of the ACS RT-N10 router, and click the tab "Drivers and Utilities".
  3. On the page that opens, click "BIOS and software".
  4. Click on the link "Show all" to access a complete list of firmware files available for download.
  5. Select the required firmware version from the list and click the "Download" in the area containing information about the downloaded file.
  6. When the download is complete, unzip the downloaded package.
  7. File extension * .trx, obtained as a result of unpacking the package downloaded from the official site, and there is a firmware intended to be transferred to the device.

Almost all problems that arise during the process of flashing routers arise for three main reasons:

  • Data transfer to the router is carried out via a wireless connection (Wi-Fi), which is less stable than cable.
  • The firmware reinstallation process is interrupted by the user until complete.
  • When overwriting the flash memory of the router, there is a power outage to the device and / or PC used as a firmware tool.

Thus, in order to secure the ACS RT-H10 from damage when reinstalling the firmware, follow the following recommendations:

  • use a patch cord to pair the device and computer during the procedure;
  • in no case interrupt the firmware process;
  • Ensure a stable power supply to the router and PC (ideally, connect both devices to the UPS).

How to flash ASUS RT-N10

There are only two main methods for flashing the router model under consideration. The first is used when it is necessary to update or rollback the device firmware version, and the second should be used if the router software has been damaged and needs to be restored. Both options assume the use of official software provided by the manufacturer.

Method 1: Upgrade, Downgrade, and Reinstall Firmware

The standard way of flashing ACS RT-N10, officially documented by the manufacturer, assumes the use of the tool with which the router's web interface is equipped and is suitable for use in most situations. It doesn't matter what version of the firmware is installed in the device and what assembly the user wants to equip his router with - everything is done by performing the following steps.

  1. Open the admin panel page and log in. Go to section "Administration".
  2. Click "Firmware update".
  3. Open the window for selecting the firmware file that will be installed in RT-N10 by clicking "Select a file" near the point New Firmware File.
  4. Specify the path to the firmware downloaded from the manufacturer's website, select the file * .trx and press "Open".
  5. To initiate the procedure for overwriting the flash memory of the router with data from the file with the firmware, click the button "Send".
  6. Wait for the firmware installation process to complete, which is usually accompanied by the completion of the progress bar.
  7. It should be noted that not in all cases the progress bar appears on the web interface page. If the process of rewriting the flash memory is not visualized and the admin panel seems to "freeze" during the procedure, do not take any action, just wait! After 5-7 minutes, refresh the page in your browser.

  8. At the end of the flashing, the router will automatically restart. The browser will display the administrative panel of the ACS RT-H10, where you can make sure that the firmware version has changed. Proceed to using the capabilities of a router running the new firmware.

Method 2: Recovery

During the operation of routers, and even more so in the process of interfering with the software part by the user, it is very rare, but still various failures occur. As a result, the firmware that controls the operation of the device may be damaged, resulting in the inoperability of the device as a whole. In such a situation, a firmware restoration is required.

Fortunately, Asus has taken care of the users of its products, including the RT-N10, by creating a simple utility for performing a firmware rescue procedure. The tool was named ASUS Firmware Restoration and is available for download from the RT-N10 technical support page:

  1. Download, install and run ASUS Firmware Restoration:
  2. Click the link "Show all" located above the area "Utilities".
  3. To start downloading the router recovery utility, click the button "Download" located in the area with the description of the tool "ASUS RT-N10 Firmware Restoration version 2.0.0.0".
  4. When the download is complete, unpack the resulting archive. The result will be a folder "Rescue_RT_N10_2000"... Open this directory and run the file "Rescue.exe".
  5. Click "Further" in the first and three subsequent windows of the launched installer.
  6. Wait until the application files are transferred to the PC disk, then press "Ready" in the last window of the installation wizard without unchecking "Starting Firmware Restoration".
  7. The utility will start automatically, go to the next step.
  8. Upload the firmware file to Firmware Restoration:
  9. Switch ASUS RT-N10 to the mode Recovery and connect it to your PC:

  11. Refurbished ASUS RT-N10 will automatically reboot. Now you can go to the admin panel and proceed to configuring the router.

Thus, the use of official software developed by ASUS makes it quite easy to reflash the RT-N10 router and restore its operability even in the event of a system software crash. Follow the instructions carefully and the result will be a flawlessly working home network center!

(rev. A), aka Asus RT-N10LX. Out of habit, I began to search the Internet for alternative firmware, including DD-WRT.

Much to my surprise, I practically did not find any information on this device, which is very strange for a device from ASUS.

But there are more than enough negative reviews on this router.

There are several reasons for this:

  • low competence of users who do not know how to properly configure the router and rely on the settings "out of the box";
  • lack of normal support for the RT-N10E / RT-N10LX router - there are, in fact, no alternative firmwares, but what is available causes complaints from users;
  • weak hardware component;

Well, now in order. The Asus RT-N10E router uses a Realtek RTL8196C MIPS processor with a frequency of 390 MHz.

By the way, the Realtek RTL8196C processor was not supported by alternative firmware for a long time, but now enthusiasts have managed to get a stable version of OpenWRT on various models with such processors.

If anyone is interested in OpenWRT, read more in the thread on the official forum (in English).

The processor has only 16 MB of random access memory (RAM), and only 4 MB for firmware.

The antenna is one external, non-removable by 2 dBi, which is very small, and you will not be able to replace the antenna by 3-5 dBi without basic knowledge and a soldering iron.

As a controller - Realtek RTL8188RE. Based on the Datasheet, IEEE 802.11n (DRAFT 2.0 Draft Specification) is supported with 1T1R i.e. in simple words - 1 antenna and 150 Mbps.

The channel width is 20 and 40 MHz, which is actually available for selection in the web interface. This option is not available in all routers. Implemented 802.11i, which allows the use of WPA2 + AES, and 802.11e, which improves the work with network multimedia applications due to better bandwidth distribution.

What was pleasantly surprised about the router - extended QoS, which allows you to share the bandwidth between clients - an option that is not so common.

Difference between Asus RT-N10E and Asus RT-N10LX

In fact, this is the same router, Asus RT-N10LX has a 2 dBi antenna, RT-N10E - 5 dBi.

The specifications for RT-N10LX additionally indicate IEEE 802.11d - in fact, it only means that the router takes into account regional legal restrictions in the field of communications, and therefore, a weaker antenna is used.

Personally, I came across a copy (built in 2012) with a small 2 dBi antenna, while all the markings on the router and box indicate that this is RT-N10E, not RT-N10LX.

If you carefully look at the information on the official website, it says: "Antenna type will differ according to local regulations and requirement in each country" and "This model sells only in EU, China, and South America". As they say, the same eggs, only in profile.

The firmware in these two models is the same.

Difference between Asus RT-N10E / LX and RT-N12E / LX

The 12th model has the same processor, but a different controller - RTL8192CE, which allows 2 MIMO, providing theoretically up to 300 Mbps.

The difference between the RT-N12E and RT-N12LX versions is in the antennas.

And here it is important to understand that these are other devices that are based on Broadcom chips.

For RT-N10 and RT-N12 there are alternative enthusiast firmwares, including "from Oleg".

At the time of this writing, the latest official firmware is 2.0.0.32 from 2014/07/28. Installed, tested - it works.
