ACDSee (pronounced as the name of a popular ensemble - "ACDeC") is a very popular program for viewing and processing multimedia files. Unlike, for example, IrfanView or XNView, it is not free at all, but it has significantly great opportunities... It is a multifunctional tool for viewing, converting, storing, processing and editing graphic images. ACDSee provides a fast, easy and convenient way to work with graphics including viewing possibilities, search, print and share digital image collections. In addition, ACDSee allows you to evaluate images, burn them to CD and DVD media.

Where to get

From the developer's site - ACDSystems - at www.acdsystems.com. On the this moment latest version is ACDSee Photo Manager version 9.0 - we will consider it. I have already said that ACDSee is commercial product... It costs about $ 40 (the basic kit, and the extended one - ACDSee Photo Manager Pro - about $ 130). However, you do not have to pay right away: the developers offer a thirty-day period for a free trial - each version has a link on the site. Download Free Trial (download a free test version). The distribution kit of the test version of ACDSee Photo Manager version 9.0 takes about 24 megabytes.

Installation

There is nothing difficult in installing ACDSee on your computer. You need to run the distribution file and answer some questions. First, you will be asked if you will use demo mode or enter license code to work with the unlimited and fully functional version. Next, you will be prompted to select the type of installation: all programs in the package or the selection of some individual of them. Choose all programs - it will come in handy.

Russification

The program, unfortunately, does not officially support the Russian language yet, nevertheless there are good people who do this as a hobby - so to speak, out of love for art. I found a crack for this version on the Internet at www.zhmak.info - it was made by Alexander Zhmakin, for which many thanks to him. You need to download it from the "Russifiers" section of the site, read the installation instructions and install. After that, the ACDSee program will become Russian-language. (However, since the Russification is unofficial, some non-Russified messages may come across when working with the program.)

Launching ACDSee

On first launch licensed version ACDSee will require activation over the Internet (similar to Windows XP) in order for you to use all of its functionality. Further, the program may offer you to automatically download and install some of its updates that are available on its website - it makes sense to do this. Well, after that, a question will immediately appear about creating an image catalog using the catalog creation wizard:

Image Catalog Wizard

What it is? Beginning with a certain version ACDSee began to use a special mode for cataloging images and multimedia files. At the same time, the program saves in the directory folder thumbnails (thumbnails) of such files, as well as any accompanying information to them, which allows, firstly, to almost instantly preview multimedia folders when accessing them, and secondly, to quickly search for various elements. When creating a catalog, the wizard asks where you usually store images: in the My Pictures subfolder of the My Documents folder (this is installed by default in Windows XP) or in some other folder. If all the images are in the My Pictures folder and in its subfolders, just click the Next button. If not, then select "Catalog specific folders", then specify which folders should be included in the catalog. The creation time of the catalog depends on computer power and the number of media files in the specified folders.

Browse folders

After creating the directory, when you start ACDSee, you see the following window:

ACDSee main window

As you can see, ACDSee has a much richer viewport of the folder with images than IrfanView. (However, let me remind you that IrfanView is still a free program.) Let's figure out what the window for viewing images and multimedia files consists of. At the very top there is a menu bar, with which you can change viewing modes, launch all kinds of tools, perform a variety of actions with multimedia files etc. Below, under the menu, there is a panel of icons of the main tools. First - icons for moving between folders, then - calling image processing modes: rotation, printing, editing, resizing, and so on. Left top window- "Folders". It is very similar to the list of devices and folders in the Explorer window. There you can change disks and storage devices on your computer, expand and collapse folders. Pay attention to the small squares of quick selection, located in the column on the left of this window: you can mark with the mouse individually any squares corresponding to some folders or entire devices (disks), after which only the selected items will appear in the main viewer window. It is very convenient in that case, when, for example, you need to view images from several different folders in one window. The right column is a special organizer panel (similar to the taskbar in Word and Excel). In it, you can set a wide variety of criteria for selecting images in the preview panel - by category, by rating, by various other parameters. Large window in the center - preview images. By default, thumbnails of pictures are displayed there, provided with the appropriate information: file type, size, date and time of creation, resolution and color, name. However, you can customize the preview window to suit your preferences within a very wide range. The size of the thumbnails. You can vary the size of thumbnails from 25x18 to 240x180 pixels using the slider located on the right upper corner window. Interestingly, when you select any value, ACDSee creates new sketches almost instantly so that they always look as good as possible.

Reducing thumbnails using a slider

View mode. You can vary the view mode in much the same way as, for example, in the file viewer and Windows folders XP. The modes themselves also correspond to the viewing options in Windows XP: for example, when you select "Filmstrip", thumbnails of the files will be located below, and a large expanded image of the selected picture will be located above them. However, in my opinion, thumbnails are the most convenient viewing mode.

Mode selection menu

Sorting. The files in the folder can be sorted in any way you like. Moreover, not only by standard parameters (name, size, date of creation, type), but also by specific to ACDSee: image property, rating, attributes, keywords, notes and much, much more. Well, the window on the bottom left - an enlarged preview of the selected image. The configuration of all these windows (folder tree, their contents and enlarged preview) can be changed in the most usual way: move the mouse to the window border and when its cursor changes its appearance to the corresponding icon, press the left key and move the border in the required direction:

Window with changed parameters

If you click on the selected image, you will be taken to a separate viewport:

Photo in separate window viewing

Clicking again on the image in the browser will return you to the folder view.

Viewing images

When viewing images in full window, you can navigate between files in a folder (or selected folders) as follows:

Home- show the first image in the folder; End- show the last image in the folder; Spacebar(space) or Page Down- show the next image; Backspace(backwall) or Page Up- show the previous image.
Also, images can be scrolled back and forth using the mouse wheel. The combination Shift + A starts and stops slideshow mode- automatic scrolling of images in a folder. During viewing, you can copy or move the image to the selected folder (Alt + C - copy, Alt + M - move). By default, ACDSee scales the viewport to fit the image size (if the image is too large, it is reduced to fit the screen). You can independently scale the picture while viewing using the following keys located on the numeric keypad (NumPad):
NumPad +- zoom in; NumPad -- zoom out; NumPad /- real scale; NumPad *- pick up best scale to view.
Using the F key, you can switch to full-screen viewing mode: the entire monitor screen turns white, and the picture is displayed on it at the selected scale. V full screen mode all control keys remain available (navigation through pictures, zooming, and so on).

Slideshow mode

With the Alt + S combination, you can enable and disable the mode automatic browsing images in a folder (or in folders if a group is selected), at which the images begin to replace each other in exactly one second. By the way, this is not really a slideshow, but the automatic view mode - something like a heavily cut slideshow. But the slideshow mode, with the help of which it is very convenient to both view and demonstrate images, is activated using the "View - Slideshow" menu.

Configuring Slideshow Settings

As you can see, here you can configure all sorts of effects of changing images, the background color of the screen and the delay in seconds of transition between pictures. If you select several different transition effects, they will be applied randomly. On the next tab, advanced settings, you can set the level of transition quality, repeat modes and the order of flipping pictures: forward, backward, in random order. On the last tab, "Text", you can set text lines and their parameters so that the captions are displayed at the top and bottom when demonstrating a slideshow.

Image processing

Included with the extended package ACDSee Photo Manager Pro is very powerful and convenient editor ACDSee Photo Editor however, ACDSee Photo Manager itself has built-in image editing tools that will suit those who need to process amateur digital photos. Let's see how this is done. So, you have a digital (or scanned, that is, digitized) photograph that you are going to process and then send over the Internet. To do this, you need a photo:

to turn; frame; correct; decrease; save compressed.
Open the original photo in ACDSee:

Photo for processing

First, the photo must be rotated counterclockwise. This can be done very simply: either by using the Alt + Ctrl + arrow combination, or by using the "Change - Rotate" image rotation menu (Ctrl + J):

Rotate the image

Please also note that in this way you can rotate a whole group of selected images at once - this is very convenient. After rotating, the photo needs to be cropped. This is done quite easily - select a rectangular area with the mouse, adjust its borders, if necessary, and then call the menu item "Change - Crop - Finish":

Circumcision tool

Now the correction. If the photo was taken without errors, then it may not be needed, but amateurs quite often have to additionally process the photo, changing the brightness, contrast and saturation of colors. This, of course, should not be overused (a common mistake of many beginners is to make the image as bright and contrasting as possible), but in some cases such processing can really improve the quality. The only thing is that you should be as careful as possible with any automatic processing (auto brightness, auto contrast, auto color, and so on). It is better to do it all by eye and remember the old wise saying: "A lot is good - also not good." This mode is called through the menu item "Change - Image Correction" (Ctrl + L). In this case, an editor window with an additional panel will appear in front of you:

Correcting the image

Autoexposure is exactly the kind of automatic adjustment I warned you against. There you can choose automatic selection of contrast and color or contrast only. But the "Brightness" tab is very useful. There you can adjust the brightness, contrast and color gamut, while immediately observing on the screen how the image changes. Once you find that desired effect achieved, click Finish and you will be returned to the main viewport. If you want to apply the changes made and continue adjusting the image, then click the "Apply" button. Now we need to proportionally reduce the width of the photo. (We have already said that in order to send an image over the Internet, it is desirable to reduce it to 500 pixels in width.) To do this, call the menu item "Resize - Resize" (Ctrl + R). You will see the editing window again, but only with the resizing panel:

Image resizing

As you can see, here you can also choose different variants image resizing: set parameters in pixels, percent of original size, actual print units. Also, when resizing, you can change the compression ratio and select a filter for processing (this may affect the processing speed). Note the very useful button“Rate new size file ". You need to click it after setting the desired parameters in order to see what the new image size will be after processing and whether it suits us. I reduced the original to 500 pixels in width with proportional changes in height and keeping the original compression level, as a result of which the file was reduced to 151 KB - this is quite normal size photos for sending it over the Internet. So what remains now? Save the resulting image under a new name. To do this, press Ctrl + S and give the photo a new name. That's all. In my opinion, the procedure is quite simple and effective.

Red Eye Removal

ACDSee also knows how to remove red-eye, and it does it much more efficiently than IrfanView. Let's see how this is done. Load into ACDSee the same photo with a pronounced “red-eye” effect, which IrfanView could not improve without preliminary processing. We call the menu item "Change - Remove red eye":

Red-eye removal

The scheme of actions is quite simple. Select the area around the red eye with the mouse. Then click "Finish". If the pupil remains red dots, you need to grab with the mouse b O larger area and repeat the operation. Just try not to capture too large areas around the pupil, because in certain cases this can lead to the fact that the editor will fill the selected color with the wrong color. However, all this will be clearly visible in the preview. As a result, we get the following image:

Photo with red-eye removed

As you can see, ACDSee did a good job of removing this effect even without additional processing.

Processing a group of images

One of the most convenient features of ACDSee is processing a group of images. When might you need it? In many. For example, you returned from a trip and brought a bunch of digital photos... One part of them needs to be expanded along clockwise, the other part - counterclockwise, and besides, you need to reduce all these images in size in order to send them over the Internet to your friends. And what, upload each photo to the editor and toil there? And if there are hundreds of photos? !! This is how long it will take! Don't worry, with ACDSee it will take you five minutes. Because this program allows you to apply editing operations (rotation, resizing, and so on) to a whole group of files at once. Let's see how this is done. Suppose we have several photos that need to be expanded (one in one direction, others in the other), resized to 500 pixels wide and written to some other folder, so that they can then be sent to friends over the Internet.

Reversal

The rotation of a group of images is performed in almost the same way as if it were one image. Just mark those images that need to be rotated in one direction (individual images can be marked by clicking the left mouse button while holding down Ctrl key), then click on the "Rotate" button (Ctrl + J):

Batch rotation of images

Pay attention to the "Apply to all selected images" option - this will give the command to process all selected photos. If you click on the "Options" button, then there you can set any additional options for actions (for example, when expanding, rename images or additionally compress them). Conveniently, by default, after spreading, ACDSee saves images with the same names as they were. Unlike the case with photo processing, when it is desirable to keep the original, when rotated, if no additional compression is performed, the rotated image can be recorded directly over the original. Of course In a similar way you can process any group of images: several, several tens, hundreds, and even thousands. The speed at which each photo is rotated depends on many factors: computer power, speed hard disk, availability free memory and other programs currently running, however, on a modern computer, it takes less than a minute to rotate several dozen photos. Change of size Now that we have all the photos properly expanded, we need to scale them down to send them over the Internet. To do this, first select all the images (you can use the mouse, or, as usual, by pressing the Ctrl + A combination). After that, press the "Resize" button (Ctrl + R). A dialog box of the group operation will appear before us:

Image resizing options

As you can see, here you can set up various resizing modes: as a percentage of the original, set a specific size in pixels, or in actual print units (centimeters, millimeters, inches). For this task, it is best to specify a clear size in pixels - this will allow you not to find out what the original size of these images is. We know that for sending over the Internet it is better to set the width to 500-600 pixels - so we set it. The important resizing parameter is set below: "Enlarge only", "Reduce only" and "Enlarge or reduce". It is highly recommended to set "Only reduce", because there is no point in enlarging photos - they lose great quality (as opposed to reduction). Attention! Please note that the values for the width and height, which are set in this window, do not mean the exact size of each photo. For example, 500 in width and 600 in height means that the resulting photos will be no more than 500 pixels in width and 600 in height. That is, resizing is done quite intelligently: differently for portrait and landscape arrangement of images. Therefore, in fact, it is better to specify the width and height values the same parameters: either 500 or 600 in both fields. However, it is clear that we have original photos big size, and we make noticeably smaller ones out of them, so in in this case no increase will be made, no matter what we put there. But for the future, it is still better to remember that it is better to choose "Reduce only". The "Maintain aspect ratio" option must be turned on, otherwise the image will be compressed only in width or height, and, therefore, will be greatly distorted. Now let's press the "Options" button. Here you will need to set certain parameters.

Parameters for writing modified files

Remove / Replace original files» - replacing original files with reduced ones (it is recommended to use only if you are working with copy of images, because it is always highly advisable to leave the originals intact). Rename resizable images» - renaming modified images (the word "modified" will be added to the original files) and writing them to the original folder. "Place modified images in the following folder"- writing modified images to the specified folder. It is best to choose the third option (place the modified files in the specified folder) and specify exactly where the images should be placed. It is also advisable to press the button "Options JPEG compression"To set new parameters for compressing photos, and select 60% quality there - that will be enough. Next, click "OK", return to the previous window, and then click the "Finish" button. The speed of the processing process depends on the parameters of the computer and some other factors, but usually this process is quite fast. After that, reduced photos will appear in the specified folder, which can be sent to friends via the Internet. For comparison, the original files in this example take 15 MB, and the reduced and slightly compressed (we changed the compression parameters) - a little more than 2 MB, that is, almost eight times less.

Screen saver from your photos

With ACDSee you can create your own screen saver (screen saver), which will be a slideshow of the photos (pictures) of your choice. This is done as follows. Run ACDSee in folder view mode. Select the desired folder (s). Mark those photos there that you want to include in the screensaver. Then select the menu item "Operations - Configure screen saver" - you see the screen saver settings window:

Setting up a screen saver

Here you are shown the photos selected for the screensaver. If you need to add some more images to the set, click the "Add" button - a corresponding dialog box will open in front of you, in which you can select various files. When everything is ready, click the "Configure" button - the same dialog box will appear as when setting up the screensaver:

Setting the effects of changing screensaver slides

As you can see, customization is no different from a slideshow, but a screen saver is, in fact, a screensaver. Click "OK", in the previous window do not forget to mark the option "Set the default keeper" and click "OK" again. Now if you go to the on-screen settings windows screensavers XP, you will see that your splash screen appears there:

ACDSee's screensaver Windows settings XP

Just in case, let me remind you that in the old days, when pixels were large and computers were low-powered, a screen saver saved the monitor from “burning out” pixels. However, technologies have evolved and developed, and now you can keep the same picture on the monitor for at least a year - the pixels will not burn out, so now the function of the screensaver is purely aesthetic (well, or if a password is used when exiting the screensaver, it is protective), but not at all saving screen pixels.

HTML Album Creation

We have already talked about how you can process your photos in order to send them to friends over the Internet. However, sending to one, to another, to a third is even more or less realistic, but what if you want to showcase your photos to tens, hundreds or thousands of Internet users? There is only one way out - to create a web page with these photos, put it on the Internet, after which you will only have to send a link to this page. We can talk a lot about how to design a web page so that users can properly enjoy the beauty of your summer hikes or stunning shots from yesterday's party, but this is not necessary when we use ACDSee. Because this program will do everything for you! You only need to select those frames with which you want to entertain the Internet community, and then select the menu item "Create - Create HTML Album". Yes, it's that simple - one command "Create Album", and the album will be created. Moreover, you can also set all sorts of parameters there to your taste:

HTML Album Wizard

The first question of the Create Web Album Wizard is general form album.

Simple Thumbnail Pages- thumbnails are located on the page, clicking on which opens a full-size photo. Bottom frame bar- view mode adopted in Windows XP: thumbnails are at the bottom, and at the top is an expanded image of the currently selected thumbnail. Frame bar on the left- thumbnails are in the left column, and the full size image of the currently selected thumbnail is shown in the right column.
Which type should you choose? Generally speaking, this is a matter of taste, however, I find the second view most convenient - the frame bar at the bottom. In the first mode, the user has to constantly jump between thumbnails and an expanded image, and the third view can cause problems for users with low screen resolutions. So, select the second view and press the "Next" button. Now you need to give a name to your pain, that is, to the album:

Page settings

Album title, subtitle, and a link to an Internet page (for example, to your home site). Here you can also set the type of font for the labels, its color, and so on. Next, you set the parameters for the sketches. If it comes about photos, then JPG format(JPEG) there are no alternatives (by pressing the "Settings" button, you can set the compression level and other JPEG parameters). If you are uploading not photos, but, for example, line pictures, then you can select GIF as the thumbnail format.

Sketch options

The size of the thumbnails is set at the bottom. The default is 100 pixels in width for landscape images and 100 pixels in height for portrait, but I would recommend setting them to 200 pixels each so that at least something can be seen in the thumbnails. The next step is to set captions for sketches and the images themselves:

Thumbnail and Image Caption Options

By default, only the filename is included in the signature. However, you can add sketches and images themselves with inscriptions from the ACDSee database: author, keywords, date of creation, note, rating, and so on. The fourth step is to set the processing parameters for the photographs (images) themselves:

Optimization options

The option "Convert images to JPEG" must be included - you never know, maybe the original images are written in TIFF or BMP, and in this case they are absolutely monstrous in size, which is not suitable for uploading to the Internet. The image quality can be set to 60, if this is the most ordinary photos, but when it comes to highly artistic images with large quantity small details, then it is better to increase the value to 85. However, you can always later see what will come of all this, and, if necessary, re-generate the web page by changing the picture quality parameters. It is also better to set the resizing of photos: for example, 600 in width for landscape orientation and 450 for portrait orientation. It is better not to set more than 800 pixels, otherwise the image will not fit on the screen at a low resolution. The last step is the answer to the question: "Where to put something?"

Setting Result Folders for HTML Album

Here you indicate in which folder to save the prepared page, as well as what prefix to add to the name of the thumbnails and, possibly, the processed photos themselves. Of course, it is better to choose a folder specially prepared for this purpose, so as not to get confused later. After that click "Next" and ACDSee starts creating an Internet album. If you asked modest amount photos, the album will be ready in a few seconds. But if you want to make the Internet happy with several thousand photos ... However, no, I can't think so badly of you ... When everything is ready, a corresponding message will appear, in the center of which there will be a link to the very created page. Click on it and enjoy the result:

Created web page with photo album

Now you just have to copy the entire contents of the "For site" folder into the appropriate folder on your site and send the link to everyone.

I think one of the most popular ACDSee photo managers (downloads.acdsystems.com/en/acdsee.exe ) does not need any special introduction. However, in spite of the fact that ACDSee is de facto the most famous program for viewing and editing graphic images, the issues of its optimal setting often worry the average user.

In the new (eighth) version of the program, the work with images has been improved (including batch processing), support has been added JPEG format 2000 (viewing and saving) and RAW format of most of the leading manufacturers of digital cameras (Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Fujifilm, Konica Minolta), there is the ability to create a slideshow in PDF formats and Flash, plus much more. How does this new feature compare to graphic filters or, say, the function of burning photo albums to CD and DVD? Is the app getting harder and heavier from version to version? Many users (including those on numerous forums) tend to argue that the latest editions of ACDSee Photo Manager are too slow. Others advise them to upgrade their computer more often, explaining the brakes of the program. outdated technology... Which one is right? Answer: neither the one nor the other, tk. any version of ACDSee can make an excellent sprinter, running briskly not only in stadiums, but also on country roads. :)

In this article, using the eighth version of ACDSee as an example, you will see how to configure the program for maximum performance while maintaining the quality of work at a high level.

Step 1. Setting up the working environment

At first glance, the main ACDSee window may seem overloaded. But after all, no one forbids closing unused panels and placing the necessary interface elements in the way that suits you best. For example, I always close the Task Panel, Search tabs, Favorites tabs, etc. and use the freed space to enlarge the browser area and preview window. Then, using the slider at the top of the browser, I resize the thumbnails. Everything is purely individual, so here I am a bad advisor. Keep in mind, however, that conveniently positioned menus and windows can also increase productivity.

Step 2. Browser configuration

Here it will be about displaying files in the preview window and in the ACDSee browser, as well as how to speed up the work with them.

To customize your browser, select Options from the Tools menu and go to the Browser section. In the Default Start Folder section, you can specify the folder that will open when ACDSee starts (by default, the last opened folder is displayed). This is useful when frequently used images are located in a specific directory. I also usually check the Clear Path History On Exit checkbox so that ACDSee does not remember the folders opened during operation - there is still little sense from this. But this, as they say, is a matter of taste.

Now let's talk about more essential things - the displayed files. By default, ACDSee shows all files in open folder... But after all, most users only need pictures, and in the midst of such chaos, it can be very difficult to find them. Therefore, it does not hurt to look at the View -> Filters menu (View -> Filters; Alt + I) and in the dialog box that appears, ask ACDSee to show only pictures and folders (Show All Pictures and Show Folders, respectively). If you also enable Show Media Files, then I advise you to go to the settings and in the Preview section uncheck at least one "tick" - from the Autoplay Audio & Video Clips item. In this case, the video, accidentally selected in the browser, will not start, which will save ACDSee from unnecessary brakes, and you - from headaches. If you disable Preview Audio & Video Clips, then in the preview window when you select a multimedia file, only its icon will be displayed. Those. the file will not be played by built-in ACDSee tools. It will also speed up the program, which is what we are actually trying to achieve. And you can listen to music or record CDs and DVDs using other specially designed means. Since we are still in the Preview section, it will not be superfluous to remind once again that the Delay control should be in the extreme left position.

And now we are very close to the thumbnails. In the settings in the File List -> Thumbnails Display section, it is necessary to disable the drop shadow effect and the drawing of the frame for the icons - Show Drop Shadow and Show Image Border, respectively. The rest of the settings in the sections we have reviewed should be left by default. Now let's move on to viewing the graphics.

Step 3. Configuring the viewer

So, to customize the options for viewing images, select the "Options" menu item ("Tools") and go to the Viewer section. In the Decoding & Caching section, the checkboxes must be checked everywhere (by default, they are). The Decode Next Image In Advance option is responsible for preparing for viewing (unpacking) the next picture, and Keep Previous Image In Memory - for storing the previous one. Both options, of course, speed up viewing and, importantly, provide smooth scrolling through pictures, loading them entirely at once. In the Startup Files section, it is recommended to select Images In New Window, which will allow you to open several images in different windows.

You can also not use the sampling algorithms (Resampling Algorithm), which improve the quality of the displayed pictures by reducing the distortions that appear when scaling them (Bicubic and Bilinear), and select Nearest Neighbor - do not apply resampling. However, these actions are justified only if the viewed images are of high resolution and acceptable quality. Otherwise, you cannot do without sampling - it will ripple in the eyes.

Step 4. Working with the database

The ACDSee database stores information about all viewed graphic and other files. Using a database allows you not only to increase browser performance by caching icons, but also to perform various operations on files (search, sorting, etc.). To add the necessary folders with graphics to the database, it is not at all necessary to open them in the ACDSee browser. To do this, just select the Database -> Catalog Files menu and specify the required folders. You can also define directories that will not be entered into the database so as not to clutter it up. This can be, for example, the browser cache. To optimize the database, run the Database -> Optimize Database wizard, which will remove redundant and obsolete information, and, therefore, speed up the operation of the database. To fine-tune the database, you need to use the Database -> Database Maintenance utility.

I have nothing more to add. Let's take a look at the fruits of our labors.
