Radar detector installation in the car instruction. Section six

There is a category of drivers for whom fast driving is a common occurrence. There are even special settings that allow the driver to avoid fines. The very first radar detector appeared back in the seventies of the last century, and today it is a necessary equipment for many drivers.

The use of radar detectors

The task of the radar detector is to determine the radiation of the radar in a timely manner. He warns the driver by means of an audio alarm and a light alarm. In this case, the radar detector should not respond to random interference.

More sensitive devices recognize "danger" from a greater distance, but at the same time, the probability of false positives from portable and stationary radio stations, from mobile phones increases. For this reason, signal receivers have to be equipped with a complex interference filtering system.

In general, a radar detector is a device that, having caught the radiation of the radar, sends its own signal in response, which distorts the readings of the speed meter. These are quite complex devices. They are banned in most countries.

We want to say that the use of radar detectors is not prohibited by the legislation in Russia and in the CIS countries. This does not apply to radar detectors, for the use of which serious punishment can be incurred. Different countries have different attitudes towards such installations. In many countries it is forbidden to use them.

But there are exceptions. In Germany, for example, the police repeatedly hold campaigns, as a result of which motorists receive radar detectors. For safety, road builders install so-called “false radars” in the most dangerous sections.

They mimic a traffic radar signal. The driver, when the radar detector is triggered, reduces the speed, and, consequently, the accident rate in this area is reduced. An analysis of such work confirmed that drivers who installed a radar detector had fewer accidents.

Myths and reality

  1. There is an opinion that if you hang a CD on the windshield, it will reflect the signal of the police radar and there will be no way to determine the speed of the car. But it's the other way around. The better the details of your car reflect the radar signal, the faster the inspector will catch the speed of the car. Any flat metallized surface is the best way to reflect the radar signal. This myth came from Germany. The fact is that on some German autobahns there is a speed limit. And violators are detected not only with the help of radar, but also with the help of a camera. The camera captures the driver. In this case, the CD will reflect the flash, creating a glare. A snapshot that serves as evidence of the fault of a particular driver will be spoiled.
  2. There is an opinion that a tool has been invented that, when applied to the body, will make it invisible to radars. An English company that produces household chemicals used to produce Flashtec spray. It had an interesting effect. If you put it on license plates, then they cannot be "read" by stationary security cameras. Glare appeared. The police received a photo of the car, instead of a number, which had a white spot on the picture. After that, the UK Transport Department banned the use of this anti-radar fluid.
  3. There is an opinion that there are detectors that are able to recognize the signal through any obstacles. But radar waves travel in a straight line. They can penetrate tree foliage, wooden buildings, but they cannot go around or pass through massive obstacles at all. In the absence of a radio signal, the detector, being, in fact, a receiver, will not be able to respond to it.

The principle of operation of the anti-radar

A conventional radar detector picks up radio signals using a simple radio receiver. This is a device that simply detects the presence of a radar. And as for more sophisticated devices, they can really deceive the patrol.

In addition to the receiver, these devices are equipped with their own radio transmitter, which emits interference. Having received an echo signal, the radar can no longer correctly determine the real speed of the vehicle. A regular radar detector will not help if a patrol car with the radar turned on drives up from behind.

How to install an anti-radar?

The main part of the radar detectors has a monoblock design. They must be installed in front of the windshield. The front part of the device with indicators should be turned towards the driver, but the back part with the receiver should be turned exactly along the axis of the car.

In no case should any objects be placed in front of the device that block the view. In the event that a tinted film on a metallized basis is stretched over the windshield, this will seriously disrupt the operation of the detector.

The best effect of installing a radar detector will be achieved if it is located closer to the upper edge of the windshield. This will give even better results when driving on hilly terrain.

Almost all installations are attached in three ways: with suction cups, with a latch and with Velcro. The most convenient type of attachment are suction cups. Velcro fastening is not suitable for every car.

The instrument panel must be suitable for this mounting. Mounting on the sun visor has an undeniable advantage - the driver's field of view is not limited, and the radar detector is hidden from prying eyes. However, with this installation, you need to run the power cable along the rack. And at the same time, a dangling wire from the cigarette lighter will interfere.

There is also a design option in which the entire set can be installed discreetly, the indicator here is separated from the receiver. Such devices are suitable for those who travel by car to a country where radar detectors are prohibited.

On the Russian market, you can find models with a compass, with voice functions, with a voice recorder, etc. There are models with the so-called "Geiger effect". The frequency of the warning sound and light signal begins to increase in such devices as the car approaches the signal source. Do you need these additional options? It's up to you to decide.

A radar detector, like any other consumer product, must fulfill its main functions, and not just be the entourage of a modern car. But there are a number of problems here. When buying a radio, it is enough to turn it on to check its performance.

With a radar detector, everything is more complicated. How to test it? No device is 100% effective. Periodically, new varieties of radars appear that use the latest technology.

Existing radar detectors are becoming ineffective. That's why there is only one way to avoid speeding tickets - do not exceed it!

It is necessary to determine the location of its location so that the road is in good visibility for it. An important condition for its installation is also the fact that the device itself does not distract you while driving. You can, of course, install it in a place inaccessible to prying eyes, but this will create a problem of monitoring the readings and the status of the device, the car body will interfere with the reception of the radar and laser signals, and this will significantly reduce the range of the radar. Equally important is the height at which the device is installed. The long one catches the signal much better, but the length of the ultra-high frequency of the radar is such that it can be reflected from any surfaces.

If you install the radar on the bottom of the windshield, then the probability of "catching" the signal of the laser radar increases. Therefore, this installation is recommended for urban residents who rarely travel outside the city. And it is better to put the radar on the top of the windshield for residents of the region where the laser radar is not used.

Proper installation of the radar will protect you from theft. Try to install the device so that it can be easily removed before leaving the vehicle. This will also prevent damage to the radar housing from overheating and deformation from direct sunlight.

Rules for using the radar detector

Various interferences in the city provoke false alarms of the device, which distracts and reduces the speed of the driver's reaction. It is better to understand in advance the capabilities of a particular radar detector and set it up for fewer false readings. If you rarely get out of the city, then it is better to immediately purchase one designed for urban conditions. Outside the city limits, the radar behaves completely differently, so when leaving the highway, switch it to another mode that can provide a greater signal reception range. There are special devices that independently switch the operating mode, focusing on the amount of interference.

In order for the radar detector to be really useful, you need to learn how to read its readings correctly. A weak signal may indicate that there is interference or that the radar is far enough away. It is also possible that the traffic police officer turns on the radar periodically, to track the speed of only individual objects. If you do not pay due attention to such a signal, you may not have time to take precautions in time.

The main feature of the use of anti-radar is an immediate response to all signals and a timely reduction in speed. But do not forget about the danger of emergency braking. It is important to realize that the anti-radar is not a salvation from fines, you cannot blindly rely on it. Only your responsibility, caution and vigilance will help you avoid a speeding ticket.

A good driver knows the price of safety. Needless to say, the road is full of surprises. Here, greedy inspectors on the road, traffic violations, pedestrians and other road users are waiting. To protect against such problems, a motorist needs only two things - and a video recorder. And here there are two options - to buy devices separately or to give preference to a multifunctional device that combines the two functions mentioned above.

For many motorists, the second option looks more preferable. This is not surprising. Firstly, the new device takes up much less space. Secondly, setting up the device takes less time. Thirdly, you can save a lot.

Purpose of a DVR with radar detector

Let's remember what task each of the devices performs:

2. The task of the radar detector is to notify in time about the presence of special devices in front that fix. violations (for example,). But that's not all. Modern radar detectors are capable of performing the following functions:

  • signal the use of special control systems by police officers (within a few kilometers);
  • warn about the presence of devices for photographic fixation;
  • detect the operation of automatic or manual radars.

As for the "combined" devices, the developers combined the two functions described above in them. It remains only to decide which DVR with a radar detector is better, and which model to give preference to.

The main criterion for most motorists is the price. There are three main categories here:

1. The cheapest devices. If you do not consider the most suspicious Chinese DVRs with anti-radar, then the average cost is about 5-7 thousand rubles. For this money, you can buy a completely reliable and high-quality assistant that can perform a certain set of tasks. The disadvantage of such devices is limited functionality. For example, the built-in radar detector may not see modern devices in the “armament” of traffic police inspectors, and the DVR will have a limited viewing angle or insufficiently high video quality.

Among the most famous and affordable devices are:

  • Arena PRO 6000 DVR. The main advantages of this radar detector are its compactness, high recording quality, sensitive sensor, affordable price. At the same time, the device does a good job of identifying the main devices in the hands and transport of traffic police inspectors. The distinctive features of Arena PRO 6000 DVR include the presence of a shock sensor, a good viewing angle (120 degrees), a built-in microphone, the ability to operate on battery power, a screen for viewing the captured video (diagonal - two inches), support for hd video and the ability to use memory cards up to 32 GB;

  • Subini STR XT-5 - another one at a price of about 7 thousand rubles. The advantages of this device include a powerful processor, the ability to record in Full HD, a 2 megapixel camera, and a high-quality 2.7-inch LCD display. The developers did not forget about such options as a built-in gps receiver that allows you to accurately link the location of the car to the terrain map, as well as a shock sensor. On the road, you can also use the photo mode, which allows you to use the device as a regular camera.

In this "hybrid" the radar detector also copes well with its functions. The device with a bang defines such complexes as "Robot" and "Arrow". In addition, you can independently determine the operating ranges of the radar unit, set the sensitivity of the detector (city, highway), turn on voice notification, and so on. DVR with anti-radar Subini STR XT-5 will be effective not only in Russia, but also in the CIS countries. Its operating range is up to 1.2 km.

In principle, the devices described above are worthy of attention. If you are puzzling over which is the best DVR with a radar detector, but have an amount of up to 7,000 rubles, then the choice is obvious.

2. Middle price segment. For drivers who do not want to buy cheap devices, devices from the middle price range are perfect. Here, the cost of the device ranges from 8-9 thousand rubles. Of the most popular DVRs with radar detector, we can distinguish:

  • Vizant 730ST is a reliable device that combines two important functions - a video recorder and a radar detector. The advantages of the device include a very large display (2.5 inches), easy mounting, robust housing and the presence of a microphone. Such an assistant is able to detect not only stationary cameras on the roads, but also hidden “ambushes” of representatives of the traffic police. In particular, the Vizant 730ST accurately captures the most popular Strelka ST device today.

The main feature of the Vizant 730ST is its selectivity. The device perfectly recognizes which camera is turned on and which one performs the function of a regular “spook” or is simply turned off. The use of a special algorithm allows you to avoid false positives and avoid interference. The undoubted advantage of the Vizant 730ST is a large number of settings that allow you to configure each of the devices (both the DVR and the radar detector) separately.

The DVR function allows you to shoot high-quality video with HD extension and an angle of 120 degrees. The built-in camera with a resolution of 5 MP will allow you to take high-quality photos, and the large display and speaker will allow you to review the captured video on the spot;

The built-in radar detector is capable of calculating any laser or radar meters - Radis, Iskra, Berkut, Kordon, Vizir, Krechet, Arena and so on. It is worth noting the quality of determining the most popular radars - Robot and Strelka. Features include the presence of a digital signal strength meter, providing information about the distance to the radar, measuring the form of notifications about the presence of a fixing device, and so on.

It should also be noted that the recorder, which shoots high-quality HD video, is equipped with a G-sensor, a built-in microphone and a 3 MP camera. A special advantage of the Cobra VRD 3000CT is the ability to shoot at an angle of 140 degrees and the presence of a fairly large 2.4-inch display.

Buying a device in this price range, you can count on full functionality for relatively little money. So if there is an amount of 7-10 thousand rubles. It remains to choose which DVR with radar is best for you

3. Expensive devices. Premium devices will cost from 10 thousand rubles and more. Among the most popular are:

The developer paid attention to the functions of the radar detector. A feature of the Vizant 735 ST is the ability to capture all radars operating in the K, Ka, X bands, as well as the laser range. Also, the device does a good job of identifying the well-known Strelka radars. If desired, you can change the sensitivity of the device and the ranges of its operation. When the device appears in the radar coverage area, the device gives an appropriate signal;

  • Neoline X-COP 9500 is one of the new devices that will cost a car enthusiast about 11,000 rubles. According to its functions, this device is usually one of the leaders in sales (and not only in Russia). The updated model of the device has a unique extension - Super HD with 2304 * 1296 dots, high-quality optics and stable firmware. In addition, the Neoline X-COP 9500 device supports the new WDR technology, has a high-quality 3-inch screen and a sensitive radar detector. By the way, the latter is able to determine all the complex existing and used in the CIS - Mesta, Iskra, Cordon, Strelka and others. In addition, it is able to accurately detect zonal speed control systems, for example, Avtodoriya.

Video recorder with radar detector Neoline X-COP 9500

The peculiarity of Neoline X-COP 9500 is that the functions of the DVR with radar detector are software separated, that is. In this case, the settings must be set for each module separately. Additional pluses include the presence of a powerful battery, a shock sensor, the ability to display images on an external screen, a built-in radar base, and so on.

Output

When choosing such a device, you should focus on several aspects - your preferences in terms of functionality and the availability of the necessary amount in your wallet. If possible, it is better, of course, to buy a device more expensive. If the budget is limited, then a simple DVR with a radar detector is enough. In general, the choice is yours.

Devices such as radar detectors have appeared on the domestic market for a long time. Over time, manufacturers have modernized and improved the functions that these devices have. K-range on anti-radar - what is it, what other ranges are used, what do you need to know about updating a radar detector? You will find answers to these questions below.

[ Hide ]

Features of setting up a radar detector

So, what do the used ranges of the radar detector (DRD) mean, how to properly configure the device for work, how to flash and how to update the database? The procedure for setting up and updating is carried out strictly in accordance with the instruction manual. To begin with, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the decoding of concepts.

Range designations

What modes can be used in modern radar detectors:

  1. X. Police equipment typically operates on several standardized frequencies. To date, one of the oldest and most important frequency is considered to be 10525 MHz, it is called X. This frequency was originally used only in location installations, it became the basis of many modern police radars. Today, this mode is considered obsolete, even if we take into account the impulse technology, it was replaced by other DRDs.
  2. K or Kay. This DRD is considered newer and fresher for DPS equipment. Due to the use of a higher potential, as well as a reduced duration of the period, the equipment that operates in this mode has small dimensions and an increased detection range. If compared with X DRD, then the range of radars that operate with the K frequency will be one and a half times higher, while the detection time will be lower.
    In addition, the main advantage of this DRD is a wider bandwidth of 100 MHz, and if compared with the X frequency, then in this case there will be much less interference. This frequency underlies the traffic police devices Berkut, Iskra-1, as well as their modification versions and entire complexes that operate using the location parts of these devices. Today, this DRD is the basis for many radars used around the world.
  3. Ka. This frequency is considered one of the newest, its operating parameter is 34700 MHz. Currently, this range is one of the most promising, due to the reduced duration of the period, as well as the increased energy potential. Thanks to these advantages, devices operating with this DRD have a high detection range of intruders, which is 1.5 km. They are more accurate, while the detection time will be much lower.
    It should be noted that this mode also has a wide bandwidth of 1400 MHz, which is why experts call it ultra-wide. In his work, there are no household or any other interference that may interfere with the determination of the exact speed of the car. Despite all the advantages, quite a few radars operating with this frequency are used today in the Russian Federation and the countries of the former USSR, such equipment is just beginning to be introduced.
  4. Ku. This mode is considered one of the rarest, at the moment it is used only in some EU countries. Over time, its introduction was also expected in Russia, but this did not happen because of this, because satellite TV also operates at the same frequency. Accordingly, the normal operation of police radars in such a DRD will not be possible, since this will lead to the constant appearance of interference in their work. In the Russian Federation, such radars are practically not used and this will not happen in the future either, however, in Europe and the Baltic countries, almost half of the devices operate at this frequency.
  5. VG-2. As you know, radar detectors are banned not only in Russia, but also in the United States, as well as in almost all European countries. Accordingly, the authorities are doing everything possible to identify violators, because radar detectors and radar detectors themselves are freely available. To ensure the rapid capture of violators using illegal devices, many different specialized devices are used. They operate at 13000 MHz and may be called VG-1, VG-2, VG-3, etc.
    The principle of operation of this technology is that the police equipment sends radiation to the car and if it uses a radar detector, then it processes the incoming pulse. As a result, the impulse is amplified and before it goes directly to the detector, where it is processed, the latter will give out a slight echo to the air. The police equipment, in turn, will record this echo and warn the law enforcement officer about the presence of a detector in the car. In practice, many manufacturers of such devices have already taken care of this problem and use different technologies to mask the detectors.
  6. Another frequency is laser. The first laser radars and devices for measuring speed began to be used by the police in the early 90s of the last century. Then the measurement of speed by equipment was carried out according to simple algorithms, as a result of the transmission of several short-term signals after a certain time. In general, the principle of operation of such radars remained the same and practically did not change, however, over the years, the frequency of the signals has changed, as well as the length of the sent beam.
    In practice, almost all detectors sold today are equipped with sensors designed to receive a laser pulse. It should also be noted that equipment operating at laser frequency does not allow normal operation in rain or fog conditions. Accordingly, its operation is possible only in dry weather.

What should be the K range?

If you do not know how to set up the detector, then first of all you need to figure out the ranges of its operation. It is this factor that will largely determine the correct functioning and performance of the device in the presence of interference. The operating parameter of the K band should be 24150 MHz, a deviation of 100 MHz up or down is allowed (video filmed by the Pro100cars channel).

What ranges can be safely disabled in the gadget?

So, what frequencies can be turned off in Russia:

  • VG2;
  • Specter I-IV;

These DRDs are practically not used in the Russian Federation, therefore, it is advisable to turn them off before operating the radar detector. Deactivating these frequencies will significantly reduce the likelihood of false alarms on the equipment. Regardless of the fact that some of the above frequencies are simply not used in police equipment, the possibility of triggering the detector from other sources cannot be ruled out. In addition, when they are turned off, the performance of the detector should also increase, since it will work only with a part of the frequencies used.

If, after disabling the modes, the detector still falsely triggers, the causes of interference may be related to:

  • geographical features of the area;
  • the type of equipment used by the police, it can be set to different power;
  • method of installing traffic police equipment;
  • weather conditions, as well as the traffic density of the car (the author of the video is channel 28Sti).

The main aspects of updating and firmware of the radar detector

As for the firmware and updates, in this case the procedure is carried out strictly using the service manual. The manual should note the manufacturer's recommendations regarding this task, and detailed instructions for flashing can also be provided. The fact is that each manufacturer has its own databases and updates for them, respectively, the update procedure may differ depending on the model.

How to flash the detector with your own hands:

  1. First you need to remove the detector and prepare the device by connecting it to a computer and laptop using the cable that comes with the kit.
  2. Then the special software for flashing is launched. There are a lot of programs on the Internet, we recommend choosing the software that matches the model of your radar detector. Check out the consumer comments online - usually users share information regarding the use of certain programs when updating.
  3. The databases themselves for updating or the firmware version can also be downloaded from the Web. Either all this can be found on the official website of the manufacturer, which is most likely, or you will have to look for firmware and updates on other sites.
  4. When everything is ready, the update utility is launched. When performing this task, as mentioned above, you need to use the service book, where all the nuances and points should be indicated. If everything is set up correctly, the program will automatically update the databases and flash the device, after which it will be possible to fully operate it.
