Tp-link TL-WR841N (TL-WR841ND) router firmware. Step-by-step OpenWRT firmware for TP-LINK TL-WR741ND router

Updating the firmware of any computer / network device is an important parameter in the stable operation of the entire system. Since, thanks to updates, it is possible to fix errors in the code, thereby ensuring more stable operation of the device, closing security holes and sometimes adding new functions to the device. That is why, when buying a device, the first thing I recommend is to update the firmware. In this article, I will describe step by step the process of updating the firmware of the TP-Link WR841ND router.

Before you start updating the firmware of the TP-Link WR841ND router, you need to configure the network card of the computer / laptop with which we will update the firmware, how to do this is described in the article Configuring the network to automatically obtain an IP address and DNS in Windows XP / Windows7 / Windows 8 .

After that, you can connect the router to a computer / laptop using a network cable (included in the kit) to any LAN port (yellow ports), also do not forget to connect TP-Link WR841ND to power.

Important!!! Do not update the router's firmware by connecting to the WEB interface via Wi-Fi.

Open any browser (IE, Mazzila, Opera, Chrome ...) in the address bar, write 192.168.0.1 and press "Enter"... A login and password entry window will appear, by default, login is used. admin, password- admin... Enter your username and password, click "OK".

Once on the web interface, we will see the version of the installed software (firmware version) and the version of the hardware.

The next step is to go to products webpage and see which version of the firmware is current. To do this, on the manufacturer's website in the column Software find your hardware version and click " Firmware".

After that, find the latest firmware version and download it to your computer. Since you downloaded the archive, you need to unzip it (otherwise you will not be able to update the firmware).

Go to the TP-Link WR841ND web interface. In the menu, select System Tools - Firmware Update - Overview point to the unzipped folder with the firmware and press the button "Refresh".

A window will appear asking you to confirm the firmware update for TP-Link WR841ND, click "OK". The update process will take no more than 3 minutes, after which the router will spontaneously reboot.

Attention!!! During the TP-Link WR841ND firmware update process, do not turn off the router yourself, it may damage it.

After downloading it, in the Firmware version line, you will see the new router firmware version.

Now you can start setting up the Internet and Wi-Fi, since the TP-Link WR841ND web interface has a button " Quick setup"- it makes it easier to configure the router, the whole process will take no more than 2 minutes. In the router menu, select" Quick setup"and click "Further".

Then, depending on your provider, select the required connection type. If you do not know the type of connection, you can select Auto detection, if your type of connection requires entering a username and password, prepare the provider's agreement and find the required username and password there.

The next step after setting up the internet is setting up Wi-Fi. The table lists the main Wi-Fi parameters and their recommended parameters.

This router is in great demand among users. It is appreciated for its signal reliability, many useful features and reasonable cost. For the device to work with the greatest efficiency, experts advise using the latest firmware for TP-LINK TL-WR841ND.

In order for the router to work without interruptions, you need to regularly check and install software updates.

Firmware advantages

There are a number of issues that only a firmware update can fix. This:

  • device freeze;
  • improper operation (for example, a sudden "break" of Wi-Fi);
  • data is not transferred as quickly as indicated by the developer;
  • VPN connection is not established;
  • DHCP service is not supported by TP-LINK TL-WR841ND auto-configuration.

There are other nuances, and in all these cases, installing a new firmware helps.

Search for firmware

The device is configured exclusively through its interface. All you need to do is enter 192.168.0.1. At the next stage, it is important to fill in the login / pass fields correctly (admin / admin is suitable for new routers). If it was not possible to use this data for authorization, reset the parameters by holding reset for ten seconds.

In the main window of the interface, you can find the "Status" tab, where the version of the device and software is registered. After examining the name of your model, go to the website of the developer company. Here, in the "Downloads" section, you should select your model and download the file located at the very top of the list (it is usually the newest).

If you install an update file intended for another router, you risk permanently ruining the TP-LINK TL-WR841ND's performance. In case of such an error, we recommend that you immediately carry the equipment to the service center (there is a possibility that experienced specialists will cope even with such a problem).

Need to make sure you choose the correct model name? Turn the router over and examine the label located on the bottom. The version of the product will also be indicated here.

Installing the firmware

Improving the TP-LINK TL-WR841ND is not difficult, everything happens in a few clicks. It is better to write down your settings right away so that after the firmware you can quickly restore the desired configuration. You can also use alternative options - save the file with the settings (this option is also provided in the interface), or take screenshots. A backup copy is made in the submenu item of the same name of the "System Tools" section. The config.bin file contains all the necessary settings.

If you managed to get the software for TP-LINK TL-WR841ND from the developer's website, unzip it on your PC to a convenient place. A cable connection should be established before flashing (never update tech over wifi connection). We recommend that you connect your router to a UPS so that the update process will not be interrupted due to power problems.

One more detail - disconnect the provider's wire from the router, this may interfere with setting up the product correctly.

Then click on the item "Firmware update" and select the file with * .bin extension. It remains to click on the "Update" button and the firmware procedure will begin.

Hey! We will now flash the Tp-link TL-WR841N router. This manual will work for TL-WR841ND as well. We already have instructions on the site. There I told you how to find out the hardware version of the router, download the firmware, and actually flash the router. This is such a general article, and I thought that I would need to prepare a separate article on the firmware of the Tp-link TL-WR841N router.

This is a very popular model, one might say popular :) Therefore, I think the article will be useful to many. By the way, I wrote about setting up this router in a separate manual, you can read it. As for the Tp-link TL-WR841N firmware, everything is just as simple there:

  • First, let's find out the hardware version of the router.
  • Download the firmware for our model from the official website (TL-WR841N, or TL-WR841ND) and hardware version.
  • Let's connect to the router via cable and update the firmware.

All this will take a few minutes. And a software update can greatly improve the performance of your router. In new updates, the manufacturer always improves, adds, and refines something. Therefore, after updating the firmware, your Tp-link TL-WR841N can run even better and more stable.

Firmware in Russian for TL-WR841ND

For this model, many are looking for and asking about the firmware in Russian. I think this question needs to be answered. Below, I will show you how to download the firmware from the official Tp-Link website. So, for each hardware version of the router, the site displays several firmware versions. Yes, there are versions in Russian. At the time of this writing, Russian firmware for Tp-link TL-WR841ND is available only for V9, and V8 (not the newest). The site indicates the language of the firmware.

I agree that setting up a router is much easier when the control panel is in Russian. But there is nothing false in English either. Moreover, almost all instructions for setting up this router are written using the example of the English version of the web interface.

Firmware update for Tp-link TL-WR841N

1 It doesn't matter if you have a TL-WR841N or ND, first of all, you need to find out the hardware version of our router... The easiest way is to look at the sticker on the bottom of the router itself. The hardware version will be listed there. For example, my router has hardware version 7.2. Below, on the sticker it is written Ver 7.2.

I have an old model, now I already have 11 hardware versions. Everyone, we know the version of our device. This information will be useful to us when loading the firmware. Since the firmware must be downloaded for our version.

If you have a model TL-WR841N then follow this link: http://www.tp-linkru.com/download/TL-WR841N.html

If you have TL-WR841ND, then follow this link: http://www.tp-linkru.com/download/TL-WR841ND.html

Have chosen, and scroll down the page. We tear off the tab Firmware(or, firmware).

Download the first firmware on the list. She's the newest. We save the archive with the firmware to the computer. Save it to your desktop, for example.

Now, open the downloaded archive, and extract the firmware file from it.

That's all, we have the file we need. It remains only to pour it into the router.

3 Attention! At the time of the firmware update, connect your computer (laptop) to the Tp-link TL-WR841N via the network cable that comes with the router. You cannot flash the router via Wi-Fi.

So, we connect via cable, and go to the settings. Open any browser, type the address in the address bar 192.168.1.1 and go over it. You will be prompted for a username and password (default admin and admin)... If you can't go to the settings, then look.

In the settings, go to the tab System Tools - Firmware Upgrade... Click on the button select a file, and select the firmware file that we downloaded in the explorer.

Click on the button Upgrade.

We are waiting for the firmware update process to finish.

We do not touch anything, and we do not turn it off. The router will reboot itself and be ready to use.

This is not just another guide, where everything is chewed, in this note I want to summarize my experience and leave as a keepsake for myself some of the nuances (pinout, wire colors, addresses, commands, etc.).

Show

A familiar admin router brought me, like this:

During a thunderstorm, his WAN and LAN1 ports were knocked out. Familiar piece of iron was flashed onto DD-WRT in order to reassign the WAN port to some LAN. I decided to install the Open-WRT firmware on the router and successfully bricked the device:

  • when turned on, only the power indicator is on,
  • the rest of the indicators simultaneously light up and go out after 1 second,
  • when the router is connected to the computer, the link interface does not raise and the router is not available over the network.

It is clear that the router is now completely erased or damaged firmware. On opening the device, an unsoldered JP1 serial port was found on the board:

I found an electrical diagram of the cable on the Internet:

I rang the connector and learned the colors of the Vcc, GND, Tx and Rx wires (in my case, they were: yellow, red, blue and white, respectively). Full pinout of the connector:

On the router board, I soldered to the serial port as shown in the figure (sequentially from left to right - not connected, red, white, blue):

I inserted the patch cord from the computer into the live LAN port (LAN3). On the network interface of the computer, I set the IP address 192.168.0.2/30 and configured the tftpd daemon, with which the firmware file will be uploaded to the device (for Windows users, I recommend using the program)... I downloaded the firmware from the official TP-Link website. Moreover (as instructed by the manuals) downloaded the file without the word "boot" in the name. I put the downloaded firmware file in the folder configured in the tftpd configuration, renaming it to firmware.bin. Turned on the router and plugged the USB cable into the computer.

When the cable was plugged into the USB port of the computer, it was detected as a new device / dev / ttyUSB0 (Windows users will have a new Serial Data Cable device that creates a virtual COM port and requires the installation of drivers)... After running the command

Sudo minicom --device / dev / ttyUSB0

(Windows users can use HyperTerminal, PuTTY or) and setting the baud rate to 115200 baud 8N1, I saw diagnostic messages on the screen and a periodically appearing inscription "Autobooting in 1 seconds ...". Immediately after the next appearance of this message, I quickly typed on the keyboard tpl... The system went into command standby mode, the indicators of the router stopped blinking and the network connection, which was not active before, became active.

Then I entered the commands for uploading the firmware to the piece of hardware:

Setenv serverip 192.168.0.2

(setting the IP address from which the firmware file will be uploaded to memory)

Setenv ipaddr 192.168.0.1

(setting the IP address of the animated device)

Tftpboot 0x81000000 firmware.bin

(downloading the firmware file from the computer to the device memory (to the temporary area, starting from the address 0x81000000). If the line T T T T T T appears when executing this command, it means Timeout (no response from 192.168.0.2). screen symbols ##########.

Erase 0x9f020000 + 0x3c0000

(preparing (clearing) a memory block from address 0x9f020000 for firmware 0x3c0000 bytes long (3932160 in decimal)

Cp.b 0x81000000 0x9f020000 0x3c0000

(copying a memory block from 0x81000000 to 0x9f020000 with a length of 0x3c0000 bytes)

Bootm 0x9f020000

(transfer of control to the program at 0x9f020000)

The router rebooted and started responding to ICMP requests with the address 192.168.0.1. Half of the work is done, I lifted the piece of hardware with native firmware, but with not a working WAN port.

Good afternoon everyone! Today we will talk about how to overwhelm the Tp-link TL-WR841N as this instruction will work in the TL-WR841ND model. The site already has an article about that. It describes in detail how to configure the router for all providers. In the same article, I will describe in detail how to update the firmware, where to download it, how to correctly determine the version of your router. Everything will be stated point by point, you can select the desired point by clicking on it and familiarize yourself with it.

The most important thing you need to understand is the main difference between Tp-link TL-WR841N and TL-WR841ND routers. This is the ability to remove the antenna in the TL-WR841ND model. Therefore, when downloading the firmware, the version of your device is important to you. You can find it on the stickers on the back of your router, next to the inscription Ver. In May this is Ver. 8.2.
