Bye everyone!

After a couple of years of use, a smartphone user may encounter some problems with the operating system of the device. Today we will tell you how to reflash Android yourself to get rid of all these problems.

What is firmware?

Flashing a phone is the process of replacing a smartphone's operating system in order to fix problems. Often such a measure is extreme, i.e. used when other methods of solving the problem do not help. Installing a new firmware is also possible when a new OS is released.

As a rule, most major manufacturers of Android gadgets update their products themselves "over the air", or simply post the latest firmware version on their website. However, sometimes the phone loses support (this is especially true for Chinese devices) and then the gadget community itself releases custom firmware versions with extended functionality.

So, you can reflash your smartphone using special software:

  • CWM Recovery;
  • TWRP recovery;
  • ROM manager;
  • Using a computer and a special set of utilities (Fastboot, KDZ Update, etc.).

Before starting the process of installing a new OS, be sure to take care of the safety of data on the internal memory of the phone - make a backup of important information. Below we will look at several ways to install the operating system.

CWM Recovery

The ClockWorkMod Recovery utility has wide functionality for installing new firmware for a smartphone. Unofficial firmware can be installed through Recovery, and it is not necessary to use CWM. By default, all devices "out of the box" already have a standard version of Recovery. Therefore, initially you will need to install CWM Recovery. You can do this through the ROM Manager.

Recall that for the normal operation of the ROM Manager, you will need root rights for your Android device. So, after installing ROM Manager on your smartphone, follow these steps:

  1. Open the "Recovery Setup" item. In the next window, in the "Install or update Recovery" section, select "ClockworkMod Recovery";

  1. The app will then automatically detect your device. You just have to click on the corresponding item in the menu;

  1. In the new window, select "Install ClockworkMod". After that, the download process of the utility will begin;

  1. Upon completion of the download, a window will appear asking you to confirm root rights for the new application.

This completes the installation process, you should see the final message "Successfully flashed ClockworkMod recovery!".

After installing CWM Recovery, you can proceed directly to the firmware itself. Before flashing an android smartphone, download the file with the new OS version in .zip format. Then do the following:

  1. Turn off the device and press the volume up key + the power button at the same time (in some smartphones, the combination for launching the Recovery may be different). The utility menu can be navigated using the volume buttons, and the power key selects the corresponding item. Perform a factory reset in the "wipe data / factory reset" item;

  1. Click "Yes - Wipe all user data" in the new window;

  1. Return to the main menu and select "install zip". Next, navigate to the appropriate folder with the firmware file in "Choose zip from / sdcard".

Upon completion of the installation process, the message "Install from sdcard complete" should appear. Return to the main menu again and go to the "reboot system now" item. After that, the download of the installed firmware should begin, sometimes this process can take up to 10 minutes. Upon completion of all actions, the smartphone is ready for use.

TWRP Recovery

Installation through this utility will not have any effect on the final result, so the method of flashing depends purely on your personal preferences. To work with TWRP Recovery, you first need to use the Official TWRP App, which will install the utility on your smartphone. This version of Recovery works with the same .zip files as CWM.

So, follow these steps:

  1. Download the required firmware version in .zip format, place it in a folder in the phone's memory;

  1. Open the utility. You can do this in the same way as with CWM Recovery (turn off your smartphone and press the appropriate key combination);

  1. Reset your system to factory settings by selecting "Wipe" from the main menu. To start the process, drag the slider on the screen to the right;

  1. When the reset is complete, return to the main menu. Go to the "Install" item;

  1. In the device memory, find the folder with the firmware, drag the slider to start the installation process;

  1. After the installation is completed Click on "Reboot System" to boot Android.

Again, the process of first booting Android after installing the firmware can take quite a long time.

ROM Manager

In addition to its main purpose, ROM Manager can also be used to create a backup of the system before installing the firmware. So, for flashing, follow these steps:

  1. Download the archive with the desired OS version, place it in the phone's memory. In the main menu of the application, select the item "Install ROM from SD card";

  1. Find the appropriate archive and click on it. In the new window, select "Reboot and Install". We also recommend that you check the box next to "Keep current ROM", so you can restore the system if something goes wrong;

  1. Confirm your action, ROM Manager will automatically start the firmware installation process through Recovery.

ROM Manager can also search for custom firmware for the device on the Internet. To do this, in the main menu of the application there is an item "Download firmware".

How to flash an android phone through a computer

To reflash a smartphone using a computer at home, you need to use several desktop utilities. Below we will tell you how to install a new version of the OS through Fastboot, one of the most popular programs for this. So, first you need to download the archive with the firmware and unzip it into the "platform-tools" folder, which contains "ADB" and "fastboot".

Then you need to put your smartphone into fastboot mode. To do this, enable USB debugging, go to the command line on your computer and enter the commands cd /, cd the path to the “adb” file. In our example, the address is C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools. After entering all the commands, the phone should reboot in fastboot mode.

Before flashing an Android phone through a computer at home, format all partitions of the device using the following commands:

  • fastboot erase boot;
  • fastboot erase userdata;
  • fastboot erase system;
  • fastboot erase recovery;
  • fastboot erase cache.

After entering each command, you need to press the Enter key. Next, enter the flash-all command, which will automatically begin the installation of the firmware (there should be a flash-all.bat file in the folder). Upon completion of the process, you will see a message that the installation was successful.

Updating or installing firmware can eliminate many problems associated with the operation of an Android device. With prolonged use, the system memory of mobile gadgets becomes clogged with residual files () (“casts” of previously downloaded programs), malicious code () and other unnecessary data. All this leads to a decrease in the performance and speed of the processor and RAM. As a result, the smartphone (tablet) often freezes and reboots on its own. And if the factory reset () did not lead to a positive result, the user can only update the software himself. Consider how to reflash a phone running on the Android OS.

Types of firmware and how to install them

Android firmware at home is in many ways different from installing the rest of the software. This process is more time consuming and is associated with many risks. If you choose the wrong version of the software or violate the update process, there is a chance that your phone or tablet will turn into a useless "". However, having learned how much a flashing from professionals costs, many still decide to change the software version on their own.

For flashing Android, there is no single instruction that would fit all models of mobile devices. It all depends on the manufacturer of the device and what software is planned to be installed.

All Android firmware are divided into two types:

  1. Official. They are supplied directly by smartphone manufacturers and are usually only suitable for a certain brand. Such programs are considered the most reliable, so they should be used whenever possible.
  2. Unofficial (custom). Developed by users of Android devices and small firms. They are applied when Android is reinstalled on Chinese devices (for example, Lenovo, Meizu, Xiaomi, etc.).

When using custom software, there is a possibility of installing a low-quality update, as a result of which the gadget will start to slow down even more. Therefore, you need to download the executable file only after reading its description in detail and reading user reviews.

There are several ways to change the firmware on Android:

Preparing for self-flashing

Before reinstalling the software on an Android device, a number of preparatory measures must be taken:

  • download a software update program on a PC (Odin, Kies or SP Flash Tool and find a high-quality usb cable (if the reinstallation is done using a computer);
  • (if you plan to reinstall Android to an unofficial version);
  • charge the battery of the gadget by 100%;

The functionality of the installed software largely depends on its version and assembly. So that the new firmware does not start to conflict with the hardware after some time, you need to find out the serial number of the mobile device:

We will consider a more detailed procedure for updating Android on a phone using the example of Samsung and Lenovo, although this instruction is also suitable for many other brands.

Smartphone firmware from Samsung

Software updates on Samsung devices are performed using the Kies program. This utility allows you not only to reflash a tablet or phone, but also to backup the old system, synchronize personal data with a PC, and much more.

Before upgrading the firmware to the latest software, you need to properly configure Kies. This is done as follows:

After setting up Kies, create a backup of the software available on your smartphone. This will restore the system to working capacity in case of unsuccessful firmware. To backup Android via PC, in the initial window of the application, select "Backup", check the items that you want to save, and start the procedure by clicking the appropriate button.

After creating a backup, feel free to reflash your phone or tablet through a computer. To do this, open the "Tools" section in Kies and activate the item marked in the figure, thereby starting the update process.

While the device is being flashed, in no case disconnect it from the PC and do not perform other actions that may lead to a disconnection.

After flashing the Android phone through a computer, check the performance of all its functions. If nothing fails, then the software update was successful.

Replacing the firmware on a Lenovo tablet via a PC

Before flashing a Lenovo tablet, you need to understand that there is no software developed specifically for this brand. Therefore, one has to be content with universal developments. One such application is the SP Flash Tool. Consider how to update the software on Lenovo using this utility:

After you managed to update the firmware, check the performance of all tablet functions.

A new firmware has been released for the smartphone, but the update via OTA is delayed? Or the current firmware is damaged and you need to upload the original image to the phone? You can fix these problems by flashing your android phone using a computer. The process itself takes only 3-5 minutes. How to perform this procedure, learn from this material.

  2. If possible, create a complete image of the original system.
  3. Charge the battery to 75% or more.
  4. Make sure the cable and connector are in good condition. A loose connection may damage the device during the flashing process.
  5. Make sure the downloaded firmware is for your model. With regional differences, such as using European firmware for an American model, there is a high probability of software damage or failure of the radio module.
  6. Before installation, check the nuances and additional requirements.
  7. If you have no experience in changing the OS, you should read the additional material at the links below.

How to find firmware on android device

Firmware should be searched on a trusted site, with an emphasis on a specific brand. Or browse resources where various makes and models are discussed. For example, the XDA-Developers forum, where you will need to be patient and have basic knowledge of the English language.

But before you start searching for the firmware, you should find out the correct model name. Information is available in the system settings section, the “About device” or “About phone” item. Usually the item is located at the end of the list, in some models, at the beginning.

Take a screenshot with the volume down and power keys, or overwrite the contents. Later, such information will be useful for knowledgeable users on the forum, which can help in finding the right firmware.

Custom - a lot, they all have their advantages and disadvantages.

So, before flashing your smartphone, consider all the nuances and find the right solution.

Android firmware via recovery

Before stock or custom firmware, you first need to get root-rights. After receiving, proceed to install one of the versions of the custom recovery menu. Better reliable version - TWRP and ClockworkMod recovery

ON A NOTE!

Note: Rooting will void your phone's warranty.

To install the TWRP menu:

  1. download the Goo Manager program, through the Play Market
  2. to install ClockworkMod, download the Rom Manager program through the Play Market
  3. after that, in the main menu, click "Setup recovery"

ON A NOTE!

During the firmware process, your Android device will be reset to factory settings, and in order to avoid losing all your contacts and data, we advise you to backup all data to an SD card at the beginning of the procedure

  1. First, download the "zip" firmware file to your SD card.
  2. But before that, you should make sure that this firmware is suitable for your device, or you risk losing it forever.
  3. After installing the menu and moving the firmware file to the SD card, boot your smartphone into recovery mode.
How to enter recovery to flash a smartphone?

To move into recovery, you can use the volume keys. So, on the turned off device, you need to hold down the "Home" and "Volume +" buttons, then, without releasing them, press the power key. The gadget will turn on in the required mode. If you have a more modern device without a Home button, repeat the process using the Volume + button and the Power button. If nothing works out for you, then you should expand the list of ways to enter recovery for different manufacturers.

Turning to the process of the firmware itself, I will add that the unofficial files of the Android operating system, created by skilled users, should be installed at your own peril and risk. If you decide to install a non-native version, then you should make sure that the firmware is "written" directly for the phone that you are flashing.

If you chose stock, then do not bother installing CWM Recovery or TWRP. All actions that should be performed are limited to directly downloading the factory file and moving it to an external memory card. After all this, the process itself will be similar to installing custom recovery:

  1. you need to enter the stock menu "recovery" and select "Apply update from external storage".
  2. next step - specify the firmware file and click "confirm"
  3. when the process comes to an end, you will need to perform an additional step to avoid glitches when turning on and operating the gadget
  4. after installing the firmware, you immediately need to select "Wipe data / factory reset" in the menu and then confirm
  5. so you can clear information about the previous software, and about the files that were previously available on the smartphone before the firmware itself
  6. after the end of these manipulations, you should select "Reboot system now". So your smartphone will reboot and the process of setting it up will start from scratch
  7. if the power-on process is delayed and the device logo “hangs”, then you should remember whether the “reset settings” item was performed after flashing.

In the Android firmware, everything is very simple. But do not undertake to flash it if you are not sure that you can handle it yourself, otherwise you run the risk of "killing" the device without any hope of recovering it. Better contact the experts.
