Programs that will help improve PC performance. System requirements and settings in the game

Many programs require excellent computer performance. This is especially true for games. But due to the incorrect operation of the Windows system and its low optimization, crashes and slowdowns in games often occur. Even with sufficiently powerful computer characteristics, the system does not allow games to be displayed correctly, and the lack of RAM interferes with the gameplay. But, there are many ways to solve this problem and increase PC performance.

Why do games slow down?

There are two types of reasons why games slow down: software and hardware. With hardware, everything is simple: computer characteristics are important for running games. Many modern games are not suitable for older processors or require more RAM. The characteristics of the video card (often also the network one) affect the speed of video information exchange. You can check the performance in the task manager, where the CPU and memory load is displayed.

If the CPU load is more than 90%, it is clear that there are not enough resources for correct operation. The photo shows a diagram of the system's operation when idle. When loading, the history window will have completely different values.

When running games on laptops, the user may encounter another hardware feature. Errors and slowdowns in games may indicate a low laptop battery. The system's hardware saves energy for long-term operation, so it does not allocate the proper amount of memory for running games. This feature is often found on DELL brand laptops. To continue the maximum operation of the system, it is worth connecting the laptop to the power supply.

Another interesting reason associated with hardware failures is poor cooling of the video card or processor. A broken cooler can damage the processor after it overheats, which is much more serious than, for example, cluttering the system with unnecessary files. It is also worth paying attention to the dustiness of the inside of the computer: over time, a very large amount of dust sticks to the boards, which interferes with the operation of the current parts.

With the software type of reasons, everything is more complicated. This is a whole complex of problem sectors of the computer, on which performance depends.

Factors affecting the performance of a computer or laptop

  • incompatibility of computer software, programs, games, operating system with PC components;
  • the presence of extraneous, unnecessary files;
  • cooler failure or poor heat dissipation from the central parts of the computer;
  • in many cases, the cause is a conflict between programs: installing two antiviruses at the same time or incompatible drivers confirms this.
  • errors in setting up the operating system and/or incorrect use of it;
  • BIOS malfunction;
  • malware infection;

However, at the software level, there are many ways to solve performance problems. In general, the combination of these methods is called optimization.

How to optimize your PC on Windows

How Registry Tweaks Can Improve Performance

As you know, a computer registry is a global database containing various data about the operation of the system and the computer in general. This global database reflects the parameters and settings of individual applications. Everything is based on how the data in the registry is structured and presented. System failures and errors primarily begin with registry data errors. Therefore, it is important to know how to properly work with data, edit and optimize the PC registry.

The easiest way to enter your computer's registry is to use the command line. Open the command line using the Win+R key combination, then enter the regedit command. Thus, the user opens the Registry Editor window.

The sequence for cleaning the registry is as follows:

  • open the registry editor;
  • go to the link HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion;
  • remove unnecessary programs;
  • the same thing should be repeated with another registry branch;
  • It is also worth paying attention to the fact that when you disable any program in startup, it is quite possible to disable the antivirus.

How to speed up your work by defragmenting and cleaning your hard drive

The most common way to optimize an operating system is to clean the hard drive of unnecessary files. These can be copies, reports of active programs, temporary files, cache of browser programs, etc.

The standard Windows Disk Cleanup tool is also used to clean the disk from temporary and unused files. Click “Start” -> “All Programs” -> “Accessories” -> “System Tools”. Then we launch the program. We select the disk we need, remove/place the indicators opposite exactly those categories of files that need to be cleaned (deleted), and proceed to clean it.

Another convenient way to overclock your computer and system is to defragment your hard drive. This procedure makes it possible to increase the speed of access to files and, as a result, increase the speed of the system. Ultimately, everything depends on the level of disk fragmentation: with a high value, performance increases significantly.

The defragmentation program is located: Start->All Programs->Accessories->Services. And then select “disk defragmentation”. Specify the desired disk to defragment. In addition, the program analyzes the disk and can tell the user whether defragmentation is needed at the moment. And if desired, the user sets a schedule according to which this procedure will be carried out.

Cleaning and freeing RAM

You can unload and clear RAM in various ways. In a broad sense, unloading RAM and increasing system performance is called optimization.

Closing unnecessary programs and applications

The first step to unload RAM is to end all unnecessary programs running on the computer.

The task manager displays programs that are running. By “removing tasks” you can unload the RAM, which will give your computer more speed. This is especially true for applications that constantly run in the background.

Cleaning startup

You don't need special programs or tools to clean startup. At the command line, enter the MSCONFIG command. So, we will launch the system configuration. Go to the “Startup” item. It’s not easy to understand the list of programs that appears. And disabling one of the programs can lead to serious consequences. In particular, to the malfunction of the system or its failure.

Restarting Windows Explorer

The explorer.exe process is responsible for everything that the user sees on the screen: the desktop, program images, etc. With a small amount of OP, this process freezes and the images behave strangely. In this case, it needs to be restarted.

To close a process, you need to hold down the Ctrl+Shift keys and right-click on an empty space in the Start menu. Then select “Exit Explorer”. This will close the explorer.exe process.

To re-enable it (and it can start automatically), you need to open the Task Manager menu again, create a new task in the “File” panel, and enter the name of the process.

explorer.exe will be restarted.

Removing malware to improve performance

Malware activity on your computer can affect its performance. Because The virus also takes up a share of RAM, it interferes with the work of other applications, and sometimes blocks them altogether.

Using a multi-level antivirus with updated databases will solve this problem, preventing harmful effects on RAM.

Optimizing visual effects

The system interface includes many visual effects that serve to create presentability, uniqueness and, in a sense, style in the appearance of the system. However, such effects have a negative impact on productivity, because occupy a large amount of RAM. And many effects are subtle and therefore completely unnecessary.

In order to optimize visual effects, you should open “Explorer”, then select “Advanced system settings”. In the “Performance” tab, select “Options”. Now the user has a menu where he can control the operation of visual effects.

How to configure the BIOS to overclock your computer and improve its performance

The system operation process can be optimized by adjusting some parameters in the BIOS. This must be done carefully so as not to contribute to any software errors.

When configuring processor consistency, you must enable the following settings:

  • CPU Level 1 Cache;
  • CPU Level 2 Cache;
  • CPU Level 2 Cache ECC Check;
  • Boot Up System Speed;
  • Cache Timing Control;

All these parameters determine the level of system performance, the speed of the processor and information processing, and the stability of the processor.

You can regulate the operation of RAM using the following parameters:

  • DRAM Frequency;
  • SDRAM Cycle Length;
  • RAS-to-CAS Delay;
  • SDRAM RAS Precharge Time;
  • FSB/SDRAM/PCI Freq;
  • Memory Hole At 15–16M;
  • Optimization Method;

These parameters include changes in the recharge rate of memory cells, the overall speed of data exchange with RAM, bus frequency, number of clock cycles, and so on.

It is worth noting that making changes to the BIOS settings may negatively affect the operation of the system.

Setting up the swap file

A page file is a virtual memory that expands the computer's physical memory.

You can set up a paging file and clear your computer’s RAM by following a simple algorithm:

In the “System” tab of the Control Panel, find and select “Advanced system settings”. Next, in “System Properties”, select “Settings” in the “Performance” tab.

In the performance parameters, we are interested in the settings in the “Advanced” field. Here we set the item that does not include a swap file, confirm. But when returning to the system, you should follow the same algorithm, only to return the previously set settings.

There is another way to clear virtual memory, using the Group Policy Editor window.

Select “Security Settings” -> “Local Policies” and select a folder with the same name.

Call up properties, select “Local security setting” and confirm.

Setting up the video card

I’ll tell you about setting up a video card as a way to optimize a computer using the example of setting up an NVIDIA card.

Video: How to Increase NVIDIA Graphics Card Performance for Gaming

The first step is to install the card drivers. After installation, you can begin configuring the settings.

By right-clicking on the desktop, we open a pop-up window in which we select the NVIDIA control panel. We are interested in the 3D Parameter. We carry out the settings according to the 3D application. And further:

  • turn on all GPUs;
  • turn off vertical sync;
  • select adaptive power management mode;
  • turn off triple buffering;
  • We configure texture filtering for the highest performance;
  • turn off anisotropic filtering;
  • turn off scalable textures.

These basic parameters are enough for the correct operation of applications and launching games. But depending on the drivers and video card model, some parameters may not be in the settings. These settings can increase the frame rate per second by up to 30%, but do not guarantee a 100% result.

Computer hardware acceleration

If the computer’s video card has difficulty working (incorrect image, lag, spontaneous turning off of visual effects), you should use computer hardware acceleration.

Hardware acceleration in a broad sense is offloading the central processor using hardware to perform tasks separately, i.e. distribution of work across several hardware modules. For example, processing video files of various formats takes up most of the computer's RAM, and to relieve the burden on the central processor, a hardware accelerator module is used.

Correct operation of hardware accelerators consists of installing the necessary drivers on the computer. In general, the entire work of hardware accelerators is based on the support of software and an entire driver base in the operating system. The graphical interface and visual effects require hardware acceleration, like many graphics engines of modern games and video editors.

How to enable hardware acceleration

On the Windows 7 operating system, hardware acceleration is enabled as follows:

  • a special driver is installed (in most cases);
  • right-click on the Desktop -> “Personalization” -> in the “Display” column, select parameter settings, additional parameters. Next, change the parameters in the “Diagnostics” tab. This tab will contain adjustments to the hardware acceleration mode:
  • Configuring video cards from individual companies in specialized programs (in the section on hardware acceleration and video conversion):

You can disable hardware acceleration by following the instructions above, but moving the slider to the other side. Often the hardware acceleration feature is not available. The PC does not support hardware acceleration because... The device driver is installed incorrectly or is not designed for this function at all.

Installation and use of optimization programs

Razer Game Booster

The program was created to improve computer performance, simplify gameplay, and generally optimize the operating system. Compared to similar programs, it shows good results in terms of quality and efficiency. Does not cause any harm to the system and file databases. However, it performs comprehensive cleaning and optimization of RAM and registry. The program contains functions for capturing screenshots and recording video of gameplay, and also supports file backup in a selected cloud storage. Recommended by many gamers and experts.

CCleaner

CCleaner is a simple and extremely effective program for cleaning and optimizing the system. One of the best programs in terms of reliability and breadth of use profile. It has many advantages: speed of startup/work, high-quality search and removal of temporary and unnecessary system files, as well as correction of registry errors quite effectively. There is also a paid and free version. However, in the free version the loss in functionality is minimal.

GameGain

The application makes changes to the registry file system, optimizing the operation of the computer. Automatically sets all the necessary registry settings.

Video: how to use the GAME GAIN program

Advanced System Care

The program is a package of basic options for debugging, repairing, restoring, and simply monitoring the system for any malfunctions. Presented in two versions: paid and free. As a rule, the free version does not always work correctly, especially since it does not include all the system protection components provided by IObit. The free version update fails on many computers or does not occur at all. However, the program in terms of functionality and form of execution in the interface differs sharply from all others for the better. Therefore, if the user is seriously interested in increasing productivity, it is worth using Advanced SystemCare.

Easy Cleaner

Free program for stable system operation. Its main tool is cleaning the Windows registry. But, in addition to this, the program performs a wide range of optimization tasks. In practice, Easy Cleaner is a good tool that would be useful to every PC user. But the program does not always work correctly. Often there are failures when deleting files (after searching for them), and the program freezes during its operation. There are negative reviews and low ratings of the program on the forums.

Red Button

Initially, the program was conceived as an easy, uncomplicated solution for optimizing the system for amateur users. All you need to do is press the big red button. The result will come by itself. This is the simplicity of the program.

The latest versions of Red Button have recently been paid. There are analogues of the program, the prices for which have now been raised as much as possible. According to reviews, the program is not highly reliable, and there is nothing unusual in its operation. Red Button is the simplest common tool for optimizing and cleaning the system.

What can I do to prevent games from slowing down?

To avoid problems with poor performance, you need to carefully optimize the system. And it’s worth doing this regardless of what type of activity you do on your PC. Rules for cleaning and preventing clutter of RAM and hard drive will ensure the correct and efficient operation of your computer.

In order to maintain a sufficient level of performance, you need to listen to the advice of experts on optimizing your computer and operating system. This is especially true for fans of online games that require maximum processor power and constant exchange of network and video traffic.

Perhaps all users have at least once accused their computer of being slow, without thinking at all that there are many opportunities to speed it up. Many people believe that improving PC performance is difficult and only accessible to advanced users, but this opinion is not entirely true. Yes, there are methods for improving performance that require a lot of skill in working with a computer, but there are also many very simple ways to “overclock” a PC. Every user should know about these methods. In this article we will talk about them using the example of the most popular version of Windows today - you will find out how to speed up Windows 7.

Disabling visual effects in Windows 7

Disabling visual effects in Windows 7 is the simplest and most accessible way to increase system speed. To perform this procedure, follow the instructions:

3. A new window will open in front of you, in it click on the “Advanced” tab and in the “Performance” section click the “Options” button.

4. In the “Options” window that appears, in the “Visual Effects” tab, you will see how many visual effects are available in Windows 7. Of course, they make the platform look more interesting and pleasant, but they significantly slow down the speed of its operation.

5. To disable all visual effects at once, check the “Ensure the best performance” box, and if you want to disable effects selectively, uncheck the boxes in the desired windows.

6. That’s it, for the changes to take effect, you must click “OK” and restart the PC.

Disabling unnecessary sound

Along with visual effects, to make it more pleasant for the user to work with the PC, Microsoft also created system sounds. You will be surprised, but they also require certain resources, and disabling them can have a positive effect on the performance of Windows 7.

To turn off visual effects:

1. Press the Win+R combination, in the window that appears, write “mmsys.cpl” and click “OK”.

2. A new window will open in front of you, select the “Sounds” tab, set the sound scheme to “Silent”, click “OK”.

3. For the changes to take effect, restart your PC.

Disabling the search indexing option

For users who often search for something in the system, Microsoft has provided a very convenient search indexing option, making it easier and faster to find files. However, if you rarely use search in the system, this option is completely useless and only “steals” the performance of Windows 7. To disable it, do the following:

2. Expand the “Services and Applications” list, click on the “Services” line and find the Windows Search service in the list on the right.

By default, you can also disable the following services [screenshot below], as practice shows, they rarely bring benefit to the average home PC user.

Removing “unnecessary” programs from startup

Windows has an autostart option. It is responsible for launching a number of programs simultaneously with the system boot. Such programs usually include various services and applications, without which the correct operation of the PC would be impossible. But, unfortunately, completely unnecessary third-party programs are often added to these programs.

The thing is that third-party software developers include an autoload function in their products, thus making their program more “intrusive.” However, when it comes to running it together with an antivirus system, this makes sense. However, there are many programs that run along with Windows when there is no need for it. Of course, this affects the speed of the PC.

To remove a program from startup, you must:

1. Press the Win+R key combination, write “msconfig” in the window that appears and click “OK”.

2. A window will open, select the “Startup” section in it.

3. Uncheck the boxes of those programs that you do not need to start automatically.

Remember! Without some startup programs, the system will not be able to function correctly, so uncheck only those programs that you are sure are unnecessary.

4. Click OK and restart your PC.

Hard drive optimization

At the beginning of the article, we mentioned that we would talk about simple ways to improve the performance of Windows 7, and, probably, after reading this title, you thought that we had already gone into the weeds, but this is not so. We will talk about the simplest hard drive optimization and try to clearly explain why it is required.

The fact is that all files that are written to the hard drive are broken into fragments according to a certain law. This is required to make the most efficient use of PC resources. However, it turns out that when a user accesses a particular file, the system has to collect its “pieces” throughout the hard drive. If a lot of unnecessary files have accumulated on your disk, this, of course, significantly slows down the process. That's why optimizing your hard drive is a necessary procedure when it comes to how to speed up Windows 7.

The first and most logical way to perform optimization is to remove unnecessary files and programs. Every user has a lot of “garbage” stored on their PC and it is important to get rid of it regularly. Of course, anyone, even the most “zero” user, knows how to delete files, but sometimes problems arise with programs, although this task is not difficult. To remove a program from your PC:

4. A list of programs you use will appear in front of you, decide which of them you no longer need and delete them - to delete, click once on the “unwanted” program and click the “Delete” button.

5. After removing all unnecessary programs, restart your PC.

Another procedure necessary for optimizing a hard drive is defragmentation. It's a complicated word, but it's simple to do:

1. Go to “Computer”, right-click on the disk, select “Properties” in the drop-down menu.

2. In the window that appears, select the “Services” tab, then click on the “Run defragmentation” button.

3. After defragmentation, restart your PC.

If your system is divided into several disks, defragment each of them. Important! The defragmentation procedure, as well as the procedure for deleting unnecessary files, must be carried out regularly.

Optimizing your meal plan

This method of speeding up Windows 7 is relevant for laptop users. Very often, when disconnected from the network, laptops automatically switch to a reduced power consumption mode, which, of course, corresponds to minimum performance. Therefore, it is very important when returning to the network to switch to high performance mode. Of course, no one forbids using this mode during autonomous operation, however, keep in mind that in this case the laptop will discharge faster.

To enter high performance mode:

3. Select the “Power Options” section.

4. Check the “High performance” box.

Changing boot options

By default, when starting up, the system does not use all its resources; this is necessary so that the “cold” hardware is not loaded to its maximum. However, if your PC has more than 2 GB of RAM and more than one core, you can change the boot settings, thereby significantly speeding it up. For this:

1. Press the Win+R key combination, in the window that appears, write “msconfig” and click “OK”.

2. Select the “Download” tab, check the “Without GUI” box.

3. Next, click the “Advanced parameters” button, check the boxes in the “Number of processors” and “Maximum memory” boxes, set the maximum value and click “OK” first in the “Advanced boot parameters” window, then in the “System Configuration” window.

Results

The article will be a useful guide for any owner of a weak laptop or computer running on the "Seven" who wants to optimize the operation of Windows 7. Today we will look at what can be disabled in this operating system in order to increase its performance without adversely affecting the functioning.

There is no clear definition of the term. In most cases, it hides a set of user measures and actions aimed at disabling and removing unused components of the operating system, as well as changing its configuration in order to improve the efficiency of the latter. That is, an optimized Windows 7 will consume less hardware resources and perform its tasks with greater efficiency than a non-tuned operating system.

One of the most important factors in reducing the performance of Win 7 is the presence of a large number of items in the list that automatically starts after the OS starts. Services that can be disabled in the Seven to speed up its operation. This article describes in detail. You can speed up Windows 7 a little more. How - read here. We will consider the remaining ways to optimize the operating system for normal operation on an old PC and to run games on it.

Setting up the system disk

The system partition must have at least several gigabytes of free space. Even if it is quite enough, the folders for storing temporary files are probably full of garbage. No matter how much we optimize the operating system, without proper hard drive maintenance, most efforts will go down the drain.

How to improve HDD performance? First of all, let's clear it of temporary files. To do this, we perform the algorithm below.

  1. Call “Explorer” using Win + E.
  2. Open the “Properties” of the system volume through its context menu.
  1. Click “Cleaning...” and wait for the cleaning program to search for unnecessary files and evaluate the freed up space.

You can also disable indexing of files on it in the properties of the system partition. Although it is carried out, by and large, when the computer is not loaded, when it is idle, we do not need unnecessary background services.

After disabling indexing, search will become slightly slower.

  1. We check the boxes which files we want to delete (be sure to check the box next to “Temporary...”) and click “OK”.

  1. We confirm our intentions.

  1. We wait until all operations are completed.

The window will close automatically.

Another increase in performance is achieved by defragmenting the system volume. The files on it are located chaotically, and defragmentation will allow you to assemble parts of one file so that they are located in sectors in order. Thus, when accessing a file, the reading head does not have to move across the entire surface of the magnetic plate in order to search for cells with fragments of the desired object. The second feature of defragmentation is the movement of files critical for the system to tracks that are located closer to the center of the magnetic plate. This reduces the time it takes to access them. Below we describe in detail how to speed up Windows 7 by defragmenting the system volume.

  1. >Open “Properties” of the C:\ drive, as in the previous case.
  1. Switch to the “Service” tab.

  1. Click on the “Run defragmentation...” button.

If necessary, you can set up a schedule for starting the HDD partition optimization process.

  1. Click “Disk Defragmenter” to improve its performance.

While problems with fragmentation of file system objects are being resolved, let's speed up PC loading by using both cores of a multiprocessor system.

Processor setup

Following the steps below will speed up Windows 7 startup by a few seconds if you have a CPU with two or more physical or virtual cores.

  1. Open the command interpreter, for example, through “Start”.

  1. Enter the command “msconfig” into the text line and execute it.

  1. Click on the “Advanced options” button to start the system.

  1. Next to the “Number of processors” option, check the box and indicate the maximum available number.

  1. After that, save the settings.

  1. In the “System Configuration” window, click “OK”.

It is not necessary to restart the computer, since we have not yet managed to fully configure Windows 7 for high performance.

Registry

Further speeding up Windows 7 is to clean the registry. Many programs and drivers leave keys (entries) in the system database after uninstallation. If you want to speed up your laptop, you should get rid of such keys. Unfortunately, Windows 7 tools and settings do not provide for cleaning the system registry, so an OS optimization program such as CCleaner will come to the rescue. This is the best utility to remove unnecessary registry entries and temporary files in Windows.

  1. Follow the direct link to download it, and then launch the resulting file.
  1. In the installer window, select the language file and click “Configure”.

  1. Uncheck unnecessary boxes and click “Install”.

  1. We launch the Windows 7 accelerator directly from the installer window.

  1. Click “Registry” and start the process of searching for unnecessary keys

  1. Activate the “Fix selected…” button and click “Yes” to create a backup copy of the deleted entries.

As practice shows, the utility does not cause damage to the system, so reserving keys is not necessary.

  1. Enter the name of the backup copy and save the file to any convenient directory.

  1. We are correcting the noted problems.

Maximum performance when working with registry files is achieved after defragmenting it. A simple defragmenter will not be able to cope with the task, because registry files are constantly used by the system, so their optimization is carried out only until Windows 7 boots.

  1. Follow the link to download a free optimization program that has the necessary functionality.
  2. Install and launch Wise Registry Cleaner.

  1. We agree to back up the entire system database and wait for the operation to complete.

Instead of a full backup, you can simply create a restore point if the corresponding feature is enabled.

Before defragmentation, you can perform a full registry scan for problems and compare the results of the application with the successes of CCleaner

  1. Click on the “Compression...” tab.

  1. Close all applications and click “Analysis”.

  1. We do not touch anything until the computer is rebooted.

Attention! During optimization, processes on a laptop or computer may not respond for a long time or freeze until the device is rebooted.

After the restart, if everything went well, the operating system will load noticeably faster, but that’s not all.

Record caching policy

Full optimization of Windows 7 cannot happen without activating the hard drive record caching option. It allows you to speed up work with files and is not enabled by default in all builds of Windows 7.

  1. Open the “Task Manager”, for example, by executing the command “devmgmt.msc” in the command interpreter window.

  1. We expand the “Disk devices” branch, where we open the “Properties” of our drive.

  1. Go to the “Politics” tab.

  1. If it is not active, check the box indicated in the screenshot and save the settings.

Disable remote file compression

The function allows you to calculate the difference between two files (for example, an earlier and a more recent copy of a document) in order to reduce the amount of information transferred when copying or replacing. This option can be disabled, because such a function is very rarely in demand.

  1. Call “Control Panel”.

  1. In it, click “Uninstall programs” or “Programs and Features”, depending on the method of visualizing objects.

  1. Click on the link “Turn Windows components on/off”.

We wait until everything loads. The process may take a couple of minutes or a little more.

  1. Uncheck the box next to the “Remote differential compression” option.

We are not in a hurry to save the new settings, since here you can remove several more unnecessary components, for example, “Windows Search”, “TFTP Client”, “Indexing Service”, if you do not use them. If necessary, any of the elements is returned in the same way.

  1. Afterwards we save the new settings.

Improving performance by disabling visual effects

Aero, window animation, visual effects when windows and menus appear consume a lot of resources, although they have no practical value. Except that the interface elements look beautiful and are animated. If the computer’s graphics adapter is very outdated, and it doesn’t have much RAM (~2 GB), you can sacrifice the beauty and animation of interface elements in order to improve the performance of the system without hesitation.

  1. Call “Properties” of “My Computer”.

  1. Activate the link marked in the screenshot.

  1. Click on the “Options” button in the first subsection.

  1. Move the trigger switch to the “Ensure the best performance” position.

Here you can check “Special effects” and indicate which of them you want to refuse.

  1. Go to the “Advanced” tab.

On this tab, we increase the size of the swap file or enable its use if the swap file is not used in the system. It can facilitate the work of a PC with a small amount of RAM, as it is its virtual extension. When there is not enough RAM to store data, some of the currently unused information is dumped onto the hard drive into a paging file, which is stored on the system volume. When any information becomes necessary, it is copied from the disk back to RAM. The speed of working with data on the HDD is much lower than with RAM cells, but in cases of extreme necessity it is better than constant notifications about insufficient RAM, freezes (often “dead”) and crashes.

  1. To enable the paging file, click “Change”.

Here the opinions of experts, including representatives of Microsoft, differ.
Some advise not to touch anything, allowing the system to automatically select the required size of the swap file, others advise specifying a static size for it, and still others advise setting a dynamic size. What will be more correct, everyone decides for himself.

Keep in mind that the specified space will be reserved on the system volume and you will not be able to use it to store personal files.

The second point: dynamically changing the size (when we specify the original and current) of the swap file will contribute to its fragmentation. Considering that working with virtual memory already slows down the computer, and fragmentation will further reduce its performance, the conclusion suggests itself that it is better to set the current and maximum sizes of the paging file to the same.

We activate the option only for the system volume, because the tracks of other disks are located far from the center, which will also affect the speed of access to the paging file.

  1. After the Windows 7 setup is completed, click “Set” and close all windows with the “OK” button.

Power management

Lastly, optimize the power supply of Windows 7. By default, the system uses balanced mode - the golden mean between power consumption and PC efficiency. Changing your power plan can improve your computer's performance. However, for laptops it is not recommended to touch it, because the device developer has already selected the optimal power settings for the system, including when the laptop is operating autonomously.

  1. To change the power plan, open the “Run” window using Win + R and run the “powercfg.cpl” command in it.

  1. Go to the power supply settings.

  1. Open the additional parameters window.

  1. In the drop-down list, select “High Performance” and save the optimal power settings for the system.

As a result, we will get a faster computer than it was before the setup. For even greater acceleration, you can use an SSD as a system volume or add a stick of RAM, but that’s a different story.

Every user always wants his computer to work as quickly as possible, but he has absolutely no idea how to do this. There is a risk of downloading virus programs onto your PC for overclocking or cleaning, but they will not speed up your equipment, but on the contrary, will only cause harm. Let's look at how to configure and improve the performance of a computer on Windows 10 using already proven methods. Popular methods to help increase PC performance.

Overclocking to full speed: setting up Windows 10 for maximum performance

When you start your PC, in most cases the programs you installed start working. Some of them may be completely unnecessary and harm your operating system. Programs greatly slow down your computer when running in the background. You may not even realize that some of them are enabled, and the speed leaves much to be desired. To improve performance, you just need to disable some programs in the startup menu.

Clearing the Temp folder

In the Windows 10 operating system, which stores files both temporarily and temporarily, a lot of unnecessary files remain. In other words, it slows down your system due to the large presence of services and various programs that fill the Temp folder.

How to increase computer performance on Windows 10: professional tips

  1. Be careful about what you install on your computer. Sometimes some programs do not connect together and they very often turn out to be antiviruses. Especially if there are two of them on the computer, otherwise the entire operating system may crash.
  2. Sometimes the problem may not be hidden in dangerous programs or even viruses, but in the contamination of the computer components themselves. You should carefully clean the PC from dust with a dry cloth. Try not to touch small parts. After cleaning, the computer runs faster and overheats significantly less.
  3. Keep in mind that performance improvements are not always good for your computer. For example, the “High performance” setting entails high battery consumption. This applies to laptop owners. It is better to use such functions on a computer that does not need to be charged.
  4. Reinstalling the operating system, as a rule, always has a good effect on the performance of the computer. Unwanted programs, those that you do not use, viruses that were undetected during scanning, or various applications that only slow down the operation of the system itself will be completely removed.
  5. Be sure to choose the right PC components. If something is chosen incorrectly, or, for example, the RAM does not match the data, and sometimes it is completely loaded. In this case, it is better to purchase new components.
  6. You can use special programs to clean unnecessary files, caches and other garbage. They increase the speed of the computer several times in all cases. The main thing is to download from a trusted source. And never forget to check the list of what the file cleaning program wants to remove!
  7. Updating drivers is a great help for your PC. Especially the update for the motherboard chipset. New versions are also relevant for other devices.
  8. Regularly scan your computer for viruses. It is best to be in the hands of a reliable antivirus. In this case, you will not risk losing all your data and information.

There are many ways to improve computer performance. The methods are simple and you can always apply them to take care of your equipment and clean up unnecessary files. In addition, convenient and fast use of a PC brings pleasure and does not cause irritation, which is important. And most importantly, do not resort to untested methods, otherwise the computer’s situation may worsen.

An interesting topic and always relevant is how to increase the speed of your computer. In the modern world, the race against time is becoming more and more interesting, everyone gets out as best they can. And the computer plays an important role here. How can he infuriate you with his ridiculous brakes at a crucial moment! At this moment the following thoughts come to me: “Piss, well, I don’t do anything like that! where are the brakes from?

In this article I will look at the 10 most effective ways to increase computer performance.

Replacement of components

The most obvious way is to replace the computer with something more powerful, we will not consider it. But replacing some spare part (component) is quite possible. You just need to figure out what can be replaced while spending less money and getting the maximum increase in computer performance.

A. CPU It is worth replacing if the new one is at least 30% faster than the installed one. Otherwise, there will be no noticeable increase in productivity, and a lot of money will be required.

Extreme enthusiasts can try to overclock their processor. The method is not for everyone, but nevertheless it allows you to postpone the processor upgrade for another year, if the overclocking potential of the motherboard and processor allows. It consists of increasing the standard operating frequencies of the central processor, video card and/or RAM. Complicated by the individual characteristics of a specific configuration and the possibility of premature failure.

B. RAM. It definitely needs to be added if during operation all the memory is loaded. We look through the “Task Manager”, if at the peak of work (when everything that can be opened) is loaded up to 80% of the RAM, then it is better to increase it by 50-100%. Fortunately, it now costs a penny.

C. HDD. It's not the size of the disk, but its speed. If you have a slow economy hard drive with a spindle speed of 5400 rpm, then replacing it with a more expensive one with a speed of 7200 rpm and a higher recording density will add performance. In all cases, replacing with an SSD drive makes users very happy. The performance before and after is completely different.

You can roughly determine the bottleneck in the computer configuration using the standard Windows 7 performance tool. To do this, go to “Control Panel -> System” and click “Evaluate performance” or “Update”. The overall performance is determined by the lowest indicator, thus the weak link can be identified. For example, if the hard drive rating is much lower than the processor and RAM rating, then you need to think about replacing it with a more productive one.

Computer repair and cleaning

The computer may be slowing down due to some kind of malfunction, and a simple repair will help increase performance. For example, if the processor cooling system malfunctions, its clock speed is greatly reduced, and as a result, performance drops. It can still slow down simply because of the components of the motherboard due to heavy dust! So first, try to thoroughly clean the system unit.

Defragmentation and free disk space

If you have never heard of what it is or haven’t done it for a long time, then this is the first thing you need to do to increase the speed of your computer. Defragmentation collects the information on the hard drive piece by piece into a single whole, thereby reducing the number of read head movements and increasing performance.

The lack of at least 1 GB of free space on the system disk (where the operating system is installed) can also cause a decrease in overall performance. Keep track of the free space on your disks. By the way, for the defragmentation process it is desirable to have at least 30% of free space.

Reinstalling the Windows XP/7/10 operating system

Reinstalling 90% allows you to increase the speed of your computer by 1.5-3 times, depending on how dirty it is. This operating system is designed in such a way that over time it needs to be reinstalled. I know people who “interrupt Windows” several times a week. I am not a supporter of this method, I try to optimize the system, to get to the bottom of the true source of the brakes, but still, about once a year I reinstall the system, and only because some components change.

In principle, if I didn’t have such a turnover of programs, then I could live 5-10 years without reinstalling. But this is rare, for example in some offices where only 1C: Accounting and Microsoft Office are installed, and nothing has changed for years. I know such a company, they have had Windows 2000 for more than 10 years and it works fine... But in general, reinstallation is a good way if you don’t know how to increase the performance of your computer.

Using operating system settings optimizer programs

Sometimes you can significantly increase the comfort of work using special programs. Moreover, in most cases this is almost the only simple, fast and suitable method. I already wrote about one good program called earlier.

You can also try a good PCMedic utility. It's paid, but that's not a problem. The highlight of the program is the fully automated process. The entire program consists of one window in which you need to select your operating system, processor manufacturer (Intel, AMD or other) and optimization type - Heal (cleaning only) or Heal & Boost (cleaning plus acceleration). Press the “GO” button and that’s it.

And one of the most powerful programs is Auslogics BoostSpeed, although it is also paid, but there is a trial version. This is a real monster that includes several utilities to increase the performance of your computer on all fronts. There is an optimizer, a defragmenter, cleaning your computer from unnecessary files, cleaning the registry, an Internet accelerator and some other utilities.

Interestingly, the program has an advisor who will tell you what needs to be done. But always check what is recommended there, do not use everything indiscriminately. For example, the advisor really wants automatic Windows updates to work. Those who have not bought licensed Windows know that this can end badly...

For optimization, there are also cleaning programs, for example CCleaner, which clean the computer of unnecessary temporary files and clean the registry. Removing junk from disks will help free up free space.

But cleaning the registry does not lead to a noticeable increase in performance, but it can lead to problems if important keys are deleted.

IMPORTANT! Before any changes, be sure to!

NECESSARILY view everything that cleaner programs want to remove! I scanned my computer with Auslogics Disk Cleaner and at first I was glad that I had 25GB of junk in my recycle bin. But remembering that I had recently emptied the recycle bin, I opened the files prepared for deletion in this program and was simply amazed! ALL my most important files were there, my entire life for the last few months. Moreover, they were not in the trash, but in a separate folder on drive D. That’s how I would have deleted them if I hadn’t looked.

In Windows 7, you can slightly increase performance by simplifying the graphical interface. To do this, go to “Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Settings” and disable some of the checkboxes or select “Ensure the best performance.”

Motherboard BIOS Settings

The BIOS stores the most basic computer settings. You can enter it while turning on the computer using the Delete, F2, F10 or some other key (written on the screen when turning on the computer). A strong decrease in performance can only be due to critical bugs in the settings. Usually it is configured normally and interfering there is not necessary and even harmful.

The easiest way to change the settings to optimal is to go into the BIOS and select an option like “Load Optimal Settings” (the spelling may differ depending on the BIOS), save the settings and reboot.

Disabling unnecessary services and programs from startup

Today, almost every second installed program sticks its nose into startup. As a result, loading the operating system is delayed for an indefinite amount of time, and the work itself is slowed down. Look at the system tray (near the clock), how many unnecessary icons are there? It is worth removing unnecessary programs or disabling them from startup.

This is easy to do using the built-in Windows System Configuration utility. To run it, press the combination “Win + R” and enter “msconfig” in the window. In the program, go to the “Startup” tab and uncheck the extra boxes. If after a reboot something is missing, the checkboxes can be returned. You should have an idea of what programs you have installed and .

One strong way to increase performance is... disabling the antivirus. It’s bad, of course, but I sometimes disable the antivirus while performing resource-intensive tasks.

No need to do this while surfing the web or installing unknown software!

Installing the latest drivers

This can really help, especially if very old or default drivers are installed (by default from Microsoft). The motherboard chipset drivers have the greatest influence, but others can also reduce performance. You need to update drivers for each device, and you can find them on the manufacturers’ websites.

It is better to update drivers manually, but there are many programs for automatically updating drivers. For example, a good one will scan devices and look for updated drivers.

Choose your operating system wisely

If you are still sitting on Windows XP, having 2 gigabytes of RAM, then I advise you to quickly switch to Windows 7, performance will increase. And if you have 4 GB or more, then feel free to install Windows 10 64-bit version. The speed of work will increase even more, but only in 64-bit programs. Video processing, audio and other resource-intensive tasks can be processed 1.5-2 times faster! It's also time to change Windows Vista to seven.

Do not use various Windows builds for installation, such as Windows Zver and the like. They are already crammed with necessary and unnecessary software, and they are often buggy.

Viruses

Even though they are in tenth place for me, this does not mean at all that you should not pay attention to them. Viruses can significantly slow down your computer or even freeze it. If there is a strange decrease in performance, then you should scan the system with one of the scanners, for example. But it is better to have a reliable antivirus installed, such as DrWeb or Kaspersky Anti-Virus.
