Programs for creating djvu files. How to open djvu file? Three easy free ways! What is DjVu format

Hello dear readers of the blog site. Probably, you have met scanned books in Djvu format(their files have the same extension).

Usually, in this way, not fiction is distributed on the network, but books containing drawings, graphs, formulas and other things that are quite difficult to translate into digital format using text recognition programs.

At first, I thought that this strange djvu () format was the usual set bitmaps(photographs), which were obtained as a result of scanning the book. But in this case, the file size would be very large, and we do not observe this.

What is a file with such a mysterious extension and how can it be opened in order to start reading the information contained in the "déjà vu", and what programs are best used in this case. I will try to answer all these questions in this article.

What is a Djvu file

It turns out that djvu was developed about fifteen years ago and is a very successful mixture of test and graphic formats... In principle, when digitizing books, there are two possible scenarios for the development of events:

  1. Recognize text on a scanned page and save it using compression algorithms, which allows you to get a very low weight of the final file. The disadvantage is that images, backgrounds, margins, curled corners and other things that can be important in some cases are lost. But on the other hand, it will be possible to conduct a full-fledged search based on the recognized texts.
  2. You can save scanned texts as pictures, for which such or tiff are suitable. However, in this case, the weight of even one scanned page will be too high if we want to maintain quality. Well, it will also be impossible to search through the texts.

The advantages of the methods described above are combined in Djvu, while having practically no drawbacks. Format Déjà vu can be classified as text-graphic, which in itself already sounds unusual, but promises a lot of dividends. Judge for yourself:

  1. The original scanned image is compressed in Djvu ten times denser than it would be with using JPEG and at the same time its quality practically does not change. At the same time, jpeg will definitely blur both the text and graphics, and everything that is possible, and our hero will leave everything in its original form.
  2. An A4 sheet scanned and converted into deja vu will weigh in the region of 50 kilobytes (read about that), if the source was with color graphics (or background), and in the region of 10 kilobytes - if it is black and white. Babbling, and this is in view of the fact that the scan was carried out in high definition 300 DPI. The same file saved in tiff format(without loss of quality), would weigh several hundred times more.
  3. Djvu file contains text layer, by which you can conduct a full-fledged search, and if you wish, you can leave only it (removing the color mask and background information), which will reduce the size even more significantly.

All this is achieved thanks to a rather original approach. I could be wrong, but in my opinion it is as follows:

  1. Separate the text of the page and its background. The algorithm monitors many factors and when correct settings can even rip the text off the cover of a magazine, where words can be used as a background.
  2. The text is saved in one-bit (black and white) and compressed quite tightly.
  3. The background is kept separately, which is compressed a little less efficiently.
  4. Information about the color of the text and illustrations used in the book is also compressed, but using a different algorithm.
  5. As I mentioned, the Djvu format provides for a separate text box, thanks to which you can search the scanned books.

But the issues of creation and principles of data formation in déjà vu files are of interest to us insofar as, and it will be much more interesting to find out how they can be open and read Djvu.

Naturally, for this purpose, special reading programs (readers) are used, which have a place to be both for the computer and for mobile devices based on Android or iOs (ipad, iPhone). It is convenient, after all, on the way home or to work, to raise your level of education thanks to reading a smart book on your mobile phone.

How to open Djvu - programs for reading on a computer

There are several programs that are focused on working only with déjà vu files, but there are a number universal solutions that allow you to read books in almost any form. There are also Djvu editors that allow you to correct or even create your own masterpieces.

Among the Déjà Vu readers intended for a computer, it is worth highlighting the following readers:

It fully supports the Russian language, and the "great and terrible" Yandex even managed to fool it, forcing you almost by force and by default search in all your browsers:

In general, they make it possible to give up all this wealth (including), but not everyone pays attention to this when installing the program. Of course, for the same one, all this looks even more intrusive, but the leading search engine of the Russian Internet has also already filled all the free programs with its add-ons for the most "don't play around".

As I mentioned, in Djvu a text layer can be stitched, therefore, when reading books containing it, you can search for words and phrases.

On the left of WinDjView there is a navigator with page thumbnails, and at the top there is a toolbar where you can open new file, change the scale and type of display of pages (endless tape or imitation of a book spread), and also rotate them, if necessary, by an angle divisible by 90 degrees.

What is remarkable, this déjà vu format reader opens new books on new tabs, which allows you to work with several materials at once in one program window. It is also possible to make bookmarks and leave comments (from the context menu of the right mouse button). Can be used screen magnifier from the toolbar and full screen mode view (in this case, the pages can be flipped with a simple click of the mouse).

If you choose from the menu WinDjView programs"File" - "Settings", then on the second tab it will be possible to set the inversion of colors (for example, in order to read white text on a black background), as well as adjust the brightness, contrast or gamma for better perception of the document in Djvu format.

At the beginning of this article, I mentioned that in déjà vu, a scanned document is split into black and white text, background, and foreground color information. So, in WinDjView all this can be clearly seen by choosing "view" - "mode" from the menu.

The last current version dates back to 2005 (version 2.0.0.26) and its compatibility with modern OS is not guaranteed, although it still works on my Windows Vista, though not as fast as its modern counterpart described just above. It does not require installation and works directly from the folder where you unpacked the archive with the program.

When installing, you need to check the box that you will not use this reader for commercial purposes, so as not to pay for the program.

Well, STDU Viewer will also ask you which file extensions you would like to associate with, except for déjà vu.

In principle, this reader does not have something global that would not exist in WinDjView, but ... Firstly, it captivates great amount formats that can be opened and read with this program.

    Secondly, a very user-friendly and well-thought-out interface.

Almost all the functionality of the reader is displayed in the form of toolbars located along the entire perimeter of the program window. The place where the thumbnails of the pages of the book being read are usually displayed has as many as six tabs located at the bottom.

Not all of them apply to Djvu, but still. The same bookmarks, which can be arranged in the form of a tree, may well replace the missing navigation through your handbook or reference book.

The brightness and contrast settings are also displayed as an icon in the lower right corner, where the buttons for switching the document display mode are also located.

Third, there are some nice functional touches that will help at daily work with STDU Viewer:

Well, and fourthly, this is a huge number of settings that can be made in STDU Viewer, so that this reader is fully suited to your habits and needs.

For example, you can configure (File - Program Settings) even appearance tabs, which is of course a trifle, but pretty nice:

Djvu readers for Android and iOs (iPad and iPhone)

For some reason, I manage to read books mainly on the road, and there are always a lot of other, more important and interesting things to do. In this regard, I had the task of downloading some suitable deja vu reader for my favorite iPad, received as a gift from the Profit Partner, but also in a compartment to everything - for an Android phone.

At the same time, I try to try all free versions of programs and applications, before coming to the conclusion that I have no other option, how to part with hard earned money. Actually, the main candidates for the place of Djvu are readers for iOs on the Internet. DjVU Book Reader.

Everything seems to be good, both reviews and screenshots, but they ask for a small amount of money (169 rubles) for it. It seemed to me that on this softina the light did not converge like a wedge and I Apple Store introduced into search bar the word Djvu and asked to filter only free apps.

After testing to open various files in déjà vu format and assessing usability and functionality, among free software a clear leader emerged for the iPad - KyBook.

Softinka is unique, in my opinion, because while being free, it fully supports EPUB, FB2, PDF, DJVU, CBR, CBZ and audiobooks in MP3, M4A, M4B format.

When reading, the pages turn over beautifully (animation can be customized), there are a lot of settings and functionality such as creating bookmarks, leaving notes, searching the contents of a book, etc. things that are available from top panel tools.

The KyBook reader has an unexpectedly many settings:

Including there is a separate group of settings for this reader for PDF and DJVU formats:

In the library of this reader, you can sort books, create shelves for them, move files between them, rename and do everything that is usually required from such programs.

In addition, it is possible to use your existing applications for working with cloud storage such as, or Google Drive.

True, by providing access to your files in Dropbox and other clouds, KyBook warns you that it can even change them, which I personally do not really like.

So I Djvu files are thrown into the Dropbox folder on a computer (via Wi-Fi), after which I open the application of the same name on the Ipad and add them to my favorites so that later they do not drag themselves over the mobile Internet, which is not always fast and, moreover, is limited.

It seems to me that it will be safer.

Now it's time to move on to the question of how to open Djvu on Android. The Internet prompted me that the best options are two free applications, which I still use, because I did not have any special complaints about their work, but just left both of them for everyone - suddenly some twisted deja vu file was opened by one of them can not.

So, I present to you deja vu readers for Android:

djvu is a relatively recent format for compressing graphic files. Needless to say, the compression achieved by this format allows an ordinary book to be placed in a file of 5-10MB in size! The pdf format is far from that ...

Basically, in this format, books, pictures, magazines are distributed over the network. To open them, you need one of the programs listed below.

How to open djvu file

1) DjVu Reader

How to create a Djvu file

1) DjVu Small

Program for creating djvu file from pictures bmp format, jpg, gif, etc. By the way, the program can not only create, but also extract from djvu all graphic files that are in a compressed format.

It's very easy to use. After starting the program, you will see a small window in which you can create a djvu file in a few steps.

1. First, click on the Open Files button (the red one on the screen below) and select the pictures that you want to pack in this format.

2. The second step is to select the location where the created file will be saved.

3. Choose what to do with your files. Document -> Djvu- is to convert documents to djvu format; Djvu Decoding - this item must be selected when you select a djvu file instead of pictures in the first tab in order to extract it and get its contents.

4. Select encoding profile- choice of compression quality. The best option there will be an experiment: take a couple of pictures and try to compress them, if the quality suits you, then you can compress the entire book with the same settings. If not, then try to increase the quality. Dpi is the number of points, the higher this value is, the better quality, and the larger the size of the original file is.

5. Convert- button that starts creation compressed file djvu. The time for this operation will depend on the number of pictures, their quality, PC power, etc. It took about 1-2 seconds for 5-6 pictures. on an average computer power today. By the way, below is a screenshot: the file size turned out to be about 24 kb. from 1MB of initial data. It's easy to calculate that the files were compressed 43 * times!

Another good program for creating and extracting djvu files. To many users, it seems not as convenient and intuitive as DjVu Small, but we will still consider the process of creating a file in it.

1. Open image files that you scanned, downloaded, borrowed from friends, etc. Important! First, open only 1 image of all you want to convert!

An important point! Many people cannot open pictures in this program, because by default it opens djvu format files. To open other graphic files, just put the value in the file types column as in the picture below.

2. After your one picture has been opened, you can add the rest. To do this, in the left window of the program you will see a column with a small preview of your picture. Click on it right click mouse and select "Insert page after" - add pages (pictures) after this.

Then select all the images you want to compress and add to the program.

3. Now click on file / Encode As Djvu - encode in Djvu.

In the next step, you are asked to specify the location where the encoded file will be saved. By default, you are offered a folder to save the one from which you added the image files. You can choose her too.

Now you need to select the quality with which the program will compress images. It is best to choose it experimentally (since many have different tastes and it is useless to give specific numbers). Just leave the default at first, compress the files - then check if the quality of the document suits you. If you are not satisfied, then increase / decrease the quality and check again, etc. until you find your balance between file size and quality.

The files in the example were compressed to 28kb! Pretty good, especially for those looking to save disk space or those with slow internet connections.

Djvu format

Djvu format is for storing scanned images. It was designed for easy viewing of scanned books, magazines, scientific materials and other text documents.

The use of this format is especially important in cases where the text contains a large number of elements, the recognition of which is difficult. Such elements can be formulas, tables, diagrams, figures. Also, this format is often used to store text information not intended for recognition. For example, for storing scanned parchments or other historical documents.

For many Djvu libraries, the format has become the main format for storing digitized books. Therefore, it is simply necessary to know how to open a djvu file format. Otherwise, you will not be able to work normally with the digitized versions of many books.

Instructions

The first options for reading books in djvu format is to use special programs... Among them are following applications:

- WinDjView (http://windjview.sourceforge.net/ru/);
- STDU Viewer (http://www.stdutility.com/stduviewer.html);
- DjvuReader (http://djvu-soft.narod.ru/opendjvu/);
- DjVu Fancy Viewer, etc.

As a rule, applications for reading djvu files are distributed, so the distribution kit of the program can be downloaded from the Internet. Download installation file, then double-click on it, select the folder for installation, then click on the "Install" button. Wait for the process to finish.

Run installed program... Select "File" -> "Open" from the menu. In the explorer window that appears, find the folder where the book in djvu format is located, which you want to read, click on the corresponding file and click the "Open" button. Another option for opening a file: using the operating system explorer, open the folder with the file djvu books, right-click on it, select "Open with" and select the program that you installed.

You can also use a special plug-in for web browsers to read djvu files. After installing it, it becomes possible to view djvu files directly from the Internet browser. The plugin is called DjVu Browser Plug-in and is distributed free of charge. To download it, open your web browser and go to http://www.caminova.net/en/downloads/download.aspx?id=1. In the corresponding fields, specify the type of operating system you are using, the desired plug-in language and version. After that click on the Download button. After the download is complete, double-click on the downloaded file to start installation. The plugin supports browsers such as Internet Explorer 5 and higher, Mozilla Firefox 3.5 and higher, Opera 10.0 and higher, Google chrome 7.0 and up.

Another option for reading books in djvu is to use special plugins for viewers multimedia files... An example would be free app IrfanView and djvu.dll plugin for it (http://www.irfanview.com).

E-books are very often offered for download in DjVu format. Many users are hesitant to upload such a file for themselves. do not know which program to open it.

What is DjVu format

DjVu is the format in which scanned images are stored. It allows you to conveniently view scanned books, magazines and other text documents.

This format is used when working with texts that have many elements that are difficult to recognize. It is about formulas, tables, diagrams, figures. In addition, DjVu is suitable for storing textual information, which is not required to be recognized, since it is preserved in its original form. These are, for example, scanned parchments and other historical documents.

Many libraries use DjVu as their primary storage format for digitized books. This is why you need to be familiar with programs that open files of this format.

DjVu software

One of best utilities considered WinDjView. This program allows you to quickly and easily read DjVu documents. WinDjView has big number functions: view in different modes(single page, continuous, full screen), image rotation, thumbnail view, annotation and bookmark creation. If you have come across the DjVu format for the first time and do not know how to open it, this program is recommended.

Another popular program for working with DjVu is DjVu Reader. It has a simple interface and can be launched without installation: you just need to download the archive, unpack it and open the document. DjVu Reader allows you to work in one and two windows mode, display one or several pages, adjust brightness, contrast and other parameters.

A universal program that will help you open e-books different formats, is the STDU Viewer. It allows you to work not only with DjVu, but also with other popular formats (PDF, FB2 and others). Note that versatility is not its only advantage - the program provides all the possibilities for full-fledged work. The user can create bookmarks, manage fonts, view page thumbnails.

You can also open DjVu files using the CoolReader program. It is also used when working with FB2, TXT, RTF, HTML, etc. CoolReader can be installed on operating Windows systems, Linux, Mac OS X, Android, Symbian OS and others. In this program, you can view books in different modes and recognize different text encodings. You can also work with CoolReader without installation.

Free program for creating and reading files in DjVu format. You can download the program at http: // www .lizardtech .com.

The DjVu format appeared quite a long time ago, but gained popularity in Lately... The format was created by AT&T and sold to LizardTech, which has created several programs to work with this format. DjVu Solo was the first trial program to create files in DjVu format, after which LizardTech created commercial program Document Express, the professional version 6 of which was released not so long ago. DjVu Solo 3.1 is not being developed further at the moment. Many people associate the slow spread of the DjVu format with the fact that Document Express Pro 6 is now asking for incredible money. At the same time, the DjVu Solo 3.1 program allows you to create files in the DjVu format, although it does not understand Russian texts, that is, it does not recognize the text and does not separate it into a separate layer, treating it as image elements. But it doesn't really matter.

So, what is the DjVu format and what is it for.

Imagine the following example: you have a rare technical book and you want to digitize it, in other words, scan it. There are no problems with scanning. But further difficulties may arise. What are scanned files? These are the most common images, usually in JPG format. What is any technical book: text, pictures, formulas. We will not talk about tables, since they are closest to the text. For text recognition, the programs ABBYY Fine Reader 10.0, ABBYY Scan To Office 2.0, CuneiForm 12 Master and many others are intended. These programs can also recognize drawings and import them into a text document. And here there are several "buts". Firstly, the text is recognized, but it is imported into a text document, it is usually in the form of a font that is different from the one that it is typed in the document, but which is selected for import. If there are many fonts in the book, then they may lose their original parameters. Secondly, many characters are still recognized with large errors or not at all. This mainly refers to the Greek script, upper and subscripts and so on. But we warned at the very beginning that we are going to digitize a technical book, that is, a book usually stuffed with different formulas. And, thirdly, with the decorative design of the book, most likely, you will also have to say goodbye to text recognition. All this will have to be restored in text document after manual recognition, that is, for a long time. To do this, you need to have exactly the same fonts on your PC, waste your time and, as a result, still not get the design style that was in the book.

That is, we are convinced that the recognition of a complex technical document leads, most likely, to a dead end. Whatever powerful programs recognition now was not, they still have limitations.

So, we are back to the original scanned files, which are stored as images. Another way is to create a book from these images. But images take up a huge amount of disk space. To store a book of 800 pages by 2 pages in one file - 400 files. If each file is approximately 200KB, then the total will be approximately 80MB.

The DjVu format just allows you to bypass all the shortcomings of both text recognition and the creation of a book from images. This format occupies an intermediate position between text recognition and image storage. Scanned pages are stored as images, but are about 10 times smaller than the most economical graphic formats. For example: we scanned a double-page spread book (2 pages). In JPG format, the file was approximately 200KB in size. When this image was converted to DjVu format, the size became more than 10 times smaller: from 16 to 21 KB. At the same time, the quality of the pages did not deteriorate. The pages will look exactly as they appeared on the scanned page, with shadows on the fold. In addition, the DjVu Solo 3.1 program allows you to organize the book by page. That is, the book becomes a single whole and there is no need to remember which pages are stored in which file.

Note: Speaking of shadows on page spreads. Research recent years have shown that it is easier for a person to read e-books that imitate a real book.

DjVu Solo 3.1 splits the image into three layers: foreground, background and black and white mask. First of all, the text is saved in the mask. This is done as follows: characters of the same font are sorted, and only one each character is remembered, and in place of all the other same characters, the addresses of their location on the book page are remembered. Thus, much less memory is needed than for storing the entire text. If several fonts are used in the text, then memorization is performed for each font separately. Illustrations, paper texture are preserved on the background. Therefore, those characters that are not recognized as characters are remembered in the background. The volume of a multi-page book is many times less than the sum of the volumes of individual pages if they were stored on separate pages. This effect is achieved by storing only one collection of characters for each font.

All layers are on top of each other and visually when viewing a book page it is impossible to distinguish them from each other.

Well, if we have convinced you that this format is vital for you, and with it you will become a great specialist, then forward to knowledge.

Retrieving the first page of a book

After starting the program, it opens working window programs (Fig. 156).

Rice. 156. Working window of the DjVu Solo 3.1 program

The working window opens empty, since the images of the pages still need to be obtained. You can get the original images not necessarily with this program, but scan them in any program that allows you to scan. If the scan was performed beforehand, then you must click on the button Open(Open) () and select start graphic file... DjVu Solo 3.1 program understands several popular graphic formats: JPG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, PICT, PNM.

If you want to scan original pages from the DjVu Solo 3.1 program, then click on the button Scan(Scan) (). After that, it starts standard program for scanning, that is, DjVu Solo 3.1 does not have a built-in scanner driver. After scanning is complete, the image is loaded into the working window of the DjVu Solo 3.1 program. I draw your attention to the fact that an image is being loaded, which has yet to be converted to DjVu format.

Note: if you have several scanners connected to your PC, then run the command FileSelect Source(File → Select Source) and select one of the scanners.

To convert the received (or open) image to DjVu format, you need to run the command FileEncode As DjVu(File -> Convert to DjVu). Save the resulting file.

Receiving following pages books

Press the button again to scan the next image. Scan(Scan) (). Each scanned image is placed in a separate window. Therefore, after each scan, you need to convert the resulting images into DjVu format, save and close the window with such an image after saving. As soon as you try to save the resulting image, the program will offer to convert this image to DjVu format when saving. That is, you must remain open book with pages converted to DjVu. To continue the book, execute one of the commands of the menu section Edit(Edit):

  • Append Page (s)- insert pages at the end of the book. It does not matter which page is selected in the window. preview;
  • Insert Page (s) Before- insert pages before the selected page in the preview pane;
  • Insert Page (s) After- insert pages after the selected page in the preview pane.
