Remote computer administration program. Remote Control Software Guide

Remote control of a computer is a connection from one PC to another via a local or Internet network and control of a device at a distance from several meters to several thousand kilometers. This software is used primarily by programmers to correct errors made by employees of various companies when working with programs.

However, it is not possible to use programs that provide remote access for corporate purposes. After all, situations often arise when you need to help parents or just inexperienced friends to deal with some of the nuances of a computer, and it can be very problematic to do this over the phone. This is where the computer control program comes to the rescue. Through a remote computer, you can connect and do everything you need to, clearly show how to proceed next time.

Programs for remote control of computers on a PC

There are many programs that allow remote access. Despite the fact that they all perform the same functions, the software has very significant differences. Of course, it is unlikely that it will be possible to cover all programs, because every now and then new products appear, and those that could not win the trust of users disappear. Therefore, below will be presented a rating of programs for remote computer control. The top is compiled according to the opinions of users, i.e. based on the number of downloads of a particular product.

Top programs for remote control of a computer via a PC are represented by the following developments:

  1. TeamViewer.
  2. Radmin.
  3. UltraVNC.
  4. Splashtop.
  5. Supremo.

TeamViewer

TeamViewer is one of the most popular programs among users. The slogan of this product sounds like “All in one!”. The program is easy to use and completely free for non-commercial use.

One of the advantages of TeamViewer is that the product does not have to be downloaded and installed on a PC, the program is available for use online. For those who decide to download the program to their computer, downloading and installing the program will also not cause difficulties and will not take much time.

After starting, the program will display a window with the computer's ID and password for the possibility of remote connection to it, and a second window that allows you to connect to other PCs by entering their data. This software is used as a program for control, monitoring of a remote computer.

The advantages of development include:

  • several modes of operation (remote connection, demonstration, file transfer and chat);
  • free use for personal purposes;
  • possibility of round-the-clock access to a remote computer;
  • high speed of work;
  • simple and intuitive interface;
  • the ability to install utilities to expand functionality.

The program also has disadvantages: the program does not always cope with long sessions and is not suitable for administering multiple computers. To fix these shortcomings, you will have to buy additional modules. However, when used for personal purposes, such software shortcomings are hardly noticeable.

In general, the software is great for private use and short-term sessions, but it will not satisfy all the needs of programmers administering entire computer networks.

Radmin

Radmin is a program for remote control of computers, which was at its peak of popularity ten years ago. But despite the decline in popularity, software still occupies a certain place in the market and remains one of the best in this area. Development is paid, but the developers provide the opportunity to take advantage of a 30-day trial period.

The program itself consists of two parts: Server and Viewer. Server is launched on the computer to which the connection is made, and Viewer - on the one from which it will be connected. You can download the program from the developers' site in full or in parts; there is also an online version of the Viewer. There is also Radmin Server 3.5 NTI - a program for remote hidden control of a computer.

Unlike TeamViewer, Radmin does an excellent job of managing a large computer network and is therefore great for the IT department of a company. Also, the advantages of the program include a high level of security, the presence of a chat (text and voice), prompt troubleshooting on a PC. There is also a disadvantage: the development is quite complicated, so only an experienced user can handle it.

As a result, Radmin is the complete opposite of TeamViewer. The product is great for IT departments of companies with branches in different cities, but not entirely convenient for use by an individual.

UltraVNC

According to users, UltraVNC is the smartest free software for remote control of computers. Just like Radmin, this software is divided into two parts (UltraVNC Viewer and VNC-server), respectively, for the computer from which they are connected and for the one to which they are connected. There is also a VNC client that combines both parts in one.

UltraVNC is one of the most secure programs listed. Development is very convenient and easy to understand when creating a simple connection. There is also advanced functionality that will require a high level of knowledge to use.

In general, the program is suitable for any type of user. Beginners who only understand the basics of setting up remote access will be able to effortlessly connect to another computer using the UltraVNC program, and professionals, after digging a little, will be able to find the widest range of functions among all the programs presented in the top.

Splashtop

Splashtop is the newest of the presented programs, but it has already become one of the most popular. According to developer statistics, the program has already been installed by more than 15 million users around the world.

What is the reason for such popularity? Splashtop is a progressive application that allows the user not only to configure the computer remotely, but also to use absolutely all of its functions (play games, watch movies, use applications, etc.).

As for the interface, in Splashtop it is very simple and easy to use. Also, the software boasts a high data transfer rate. It is possible to administer a computer network, however, only up to five devices. Splashtop is suitable for any device and operating system.

The development has only one big drawback. This is not a program for remote control of a computer via the Internet, access is possible only through a local network.

Supremo

Supremo is a great copy of TeamViewer with a bit of Radmin and completely free to use. In this development, almost everything, from design to settings, is borrowed from TeamViewer. The only significant difference is the need to allow the connection from both sides, that is, the computer to which they are connected must agree (by pressing the button and “Start”), otherwise the session will be terminated. The Supremo program is one of the simplest and most understandable on the Internet, in addition, it has very effective protection.

Just like Radmin, Supremo is great for working with large computer networks. However, unlike Radmin, it does not require complex settings when connected, which makes it suitable not only for administration, but also for one-time use.

There is only one significant drawback - the software works only with Windows. Any other operating system is incompatible with development.

Summing up, we can say that Supremo is the best program for remote computer control. The software has its drawbacks, but they will be noticeable only to the most experienced users who need the most complex remote connection functions.

Programs for remote control of computers on Android

Today, you can set up a remote connection to a computer not only from another PC, but also from a phone or tablet on the Android system. And vice versa, there is a program for remote control of "Android" from a computer. Of course, the choice of software is not so great here due to the novelty of the function itself. There are only three programs for remote computer control via Android.

Logmein

Logmein is a powerful application with a wide range of functions that allows you to access not only the computer desktop, but also the file system. The program for remote control of computers has a simple, intuitive interface, even though there is no Russian translation. The data transfer rate is very fast for a mobile application.

The disadvantages of the application are the slow loading of the interface and the need to install the client on the PC to connect remotely (the client for the computer has been translated into Russian). Another disadvantage is that the program is paid, but you can use a trial period of 14 days.

Parallels Access

Another app with a two week free trial is Parallels Access. Among its main advantages are:

  • simple and really beautiful interface;
  • a huge variety of functions;
  • high speed (both work and transfer);
  • simple connection;
  • built-in file manager.

It was not possible to identify significant disadvantages of the application. The only thing that can scare you off is the payment, but even here it is quite acceptable.

Chrome Remote Desktop

Chrome Remote Desktop is a very simple application for setting up remote access. Even a beginner can figure out the setup.

The feature set is very sparse. The graphics in the application are poor, but Google's creation boasts the fastest connection speed of any application. To work, in addition to the application itself, you will need the Google Chrome browser.

In general, the development is not very good. The emphasis here is on speed and simplicity, and this is exactly what the software does. The Android app is free.

Security when working with remote access

Remote access is a very useful feature, but it can also harm the device, so if your PC has a program for remote control of computers, you should follow the safety rules.

Firstly, a good antivirus with the latest updates must be installed on your computer or tablet. Do not accept unknown or potentially unsafe files.

Secondly, do not forget that many of the presented applications allow you to connect to your computer without permission. So don't leave an app running offline if it's not in use at the moment. Be sure to disable the activation function at Windows startup.

If the program blocks unauthorized connections, you should not allow unknown users to connect.

Good day!

In today's article, I would like to focus on remote control of a computer running Windows 7, 8, 8.1. In general, such a task can arise in a variety of circumstances: for example, to help relatives or friends set up a computer if they are poorly versed in it; organize remote assistance at a firm (enterprise, department) so that you can quickly solve user problems or simply follow them (so that you do not play and do not go to "contacts" during working hours), etc.

Dozens of programs can be used to remotely control a computer (or maybe hundreds, such programs appear as "mushrooms after rain"). In this article, we will focus on some of the best. So, let's begin…

T eam Viewer

It is one of the best PC remote control software. Moreover, it has a number of advantages in relation to similar programs:

It is free for non-commercial use;

Allows you to share files;

Has a high degree of protection;

Computer control will be carried out as if you yourself are sitting at it!

When installing the program, you can specify what you will do with it: install to control this computer, or both manage and allow you to connect. It is also necessary to indicate what will be the use of the program: commercial / non-commercial.

After installing and launching Team Viewer, you can get started.

To connect to another computer need to:

Install and run utilities on both computers;

Enter the ID of the computer to which you want to connect (usually 9 digits);

Then enter the password for access (4 digits).

If the data is entered correctly, you will see the "desktop" of the remote computer. Now you can work with it as if it were your "desktop".

The Team Viewer window is the desktop of the remote PC.

R admin

One of the best programs for administering computers in a local network and for providing assistance and support to users of this network. The program is paid, but there is a test period of 30 days. At this time, by the way, the program works without restrictions in any functions.

The principle of operation in it is similar to that of Team Viewer. Radmin consists of two modules:

Radmin Viewer is a free module that can be used to manage computers on which the server version of the module is installed (see below);

Radmin Server is a paid module installed on the PC to be controlled.

A mmyy Admin

A relatively new program (but has already managed to get acquainted with it and start using it by about 40,000 people around the world) for remote control of computers.

Main advantages:

Free for non-commercial use;

Easy setup and use even for novice users;

High degree of security of the transmitted data;

Compatible with all popular Windows XP, 7, 8;

Free solutions

Remote control involves connecting to another computer to gain access and control resources. Thanks to this feature, the user can solve many additional tasks remotely: consultations, diagnostics, computer monitoring. Thus, tasks are simplified that are often impossible or irrational to perform at a distance.

The review will consider 10 solutions (6 free and 4 paid) for remote management. The main attention will be paid to the following features of the software of the selected category:

  • Package contents: what components are included in the distribution kit, types of installation on the host and client computers
  • Connection modes: supported protocols, work with RDP (see below)
  • Presentation functions: I mean the possibility of audio and video accompaniment, screen capture, the presence of additional tools ("pointer", "drawing board", etc.)
  • Security: supported encryption technologies, storage of confidential data, types of authorization on local and remote computers, availability of necessary settings
  • Platform support: mobile platforms and OS, availability of an online version.

The standard features of Windows will not be ignored, namely the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), which will be discussed first. At the end of the review, there is a comparison table with detailed information on the availability of the necessary functions in the mentioned applications.

RDP - Windows Remote Desktop Protocol

Starting with Windows NT, there is support for the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). Accordingly, Windows 7 offers the user RDP 7 (an update for Windows XP is also available), Windows 8 - RDP 8 (also available for Windows 7 SP1). The capabilities of the current version, RDP 8, and will be discussed.

Connection to a remote worker is carried out using the mstsc.exe application, after entering the name of the remote computer. Connection parameters are also available in this dialog.

In the "Display" tab, you can specify the resolution of the remote desktop (with the ability to enable full-screen mode), color depth (up to 32 bits).

In the "Local resources" section, you can select the audio playback mode (on a remote or current computer), enable audio recording from the remote desktop. Also in this section you can configure access to the printer, local disk, floppy drive, PnP devices, ports.

The quality of data transmission is regulated in the "Interaction" tab. You can not only select a connection profile, but also independently define display parameters: desktop background, anti-aliasing, visual effects, image caching. All of these options affect the data transfer rate for remote access and can significantly optimize network traffic.

Security settings are available through the "System" component ("System Properties" in the Control Panel). In the "Remote Access" tab, you can allow Remote Assistance connections as well as remote connections to your computer. Authentication is done at the network level. It is also allowed to restrict access by specifying the list of allowed remote desktop users yourself.

Thus, the state of Windows provides basic tools for working with the RDP protocol. But, as expected, advanced security settings, support for mobile platforms, presentation functions are not offered to the user.

Teamviewer

TeamViewer is perhaps the most famous free remote control program. The toolkit allows you to establish remote access to your home computer, manage your desktop from various platforms and devices, and administer Windows servers. In addition, the developers highlight the corporate capabilities of TeamViewer: the program can be used to organize conferences, consultations and help colleagues at work.

TeamViewer is available for Windows, Linux, Mac platforms (with limitations), remote access from OS-based devices is possible. TeamViewer client in the full version of the distribution (All-in-One), as a system service (TeamViewer Host), in a portable format, on a terminal server and other options. The TeamViewer QuickSupport module should be highlighted, which does not require installation and is optimal for urgent tasks.

In the full version of the program, the client and operator parts are available. The TeamViewer interface is represented by a main window with two tabs - Remote Control and Conference.

Remote control

The user receives a unique ID to identify the computer on the network, and a temporary password. Also, using the partner ID (optional - the IP address) and knowing its password, you can establish a connection to the remote device.

Three connection modes are available:

  • Remote Control: Remotely control the device or collaborate on the same computer
    All actions are performed on another computer through the remote control window. In this case, it is possible to change the resolution and scaling, switching between active monitors and other options.
  • File transfer: sharing files during a session
    To exchange data, TeamViewer uses a two-pane file manager, in which host and client resources and basic file operations for working with them are available, such as creating folders, deleting, copying, etc.
  • VPN: virtual network mode
    You can set up a virtual private network between computers to share devices (printers, removable media, etc.).

Conferences

In this TeamViewer tab, you can create a blitz conference or connect to an existing one. Among the available tools are voice and video communication, screen sharing, session recording with the ability to convert to AVI. Whiteboard is used as a canvas for drawing, sketching, commenting.

One of the indisputable features of TeamViewer is the Computers & Contacts list, which provides quick access to devices. In addition, here you can monitor the network status of computers, exchange messages (there are group chat capabilities). Looking ahead, it should be noted that not every participant in the review offers an address book for quick connection to other devices.

For security purposes, the program uses encryption of sessions (AES 256 bit) and traffic (RSA key exchange). Files transferred during a session are signed by VeriSign and the end user must agree to receive them. Through the TeamViewer settings, it is possible to restrict access: setting access to all operations only after confirmation or denying outgoing sessions.

Summary

TeamViewer is a universal solution with a choice of remote control method. Thanks to the widely presented multimedia functions, convenient organization of contacts, the program is optimal for conferences.

Ammyy Admin

Ammyy Admin does not require installation and combines a simple interface and flexible functionality. The program is free, has no restrictions for home use. Distributed for Windows, Linux / FreeBSD platforms, mobile devices are not supported.

The client and operator modules are available in the main window. The user receives an ID, which is generated with reference to the equipment. Optionally, when connecting, you can use IP.

The client part can be activated or stopped, thereby setting a ban on connections; by default Ammyy Admin works in standby mode. You can track the connection status using the indicators, the decoding of which is in.

There is an address book, contacts can be combined into groups, change the order of contacts, manually add new addresses. The network status of computers, however, cannot be monitored.

The main connection modes are Desktop (remote desktop), File manager (File manager) and Microsoft RDP. RDP allows you to connect to a remote desktop, standard Windows functions are provided.

Of the other modes, Voice Chat and Speed Test remain. Obviously, multimedia capabilities are not presented here as fully as in TeamViewer: Ammyy Admin is not positioned as a kind of corporate solution. It is worth noting the screen sharing function, which, in combination with voice chat, makes Ammyy Admin a program suitable for remote assistance.

Going to "Ammyy → Settings → Operator", you can specify the RDP parameters, select the type of encryption and codec profiles, thereby reducing the load on the network. More importantly, the Network tab allows you to configure the Ammyy Admin connection, manually specify the routers, enable or disable data transmission over the Ammyy Worldwide Network.

The file manager is a two-panel one, through which standard file operations between the client and the operator are available.

In the access rights settings ("Client → Access Rights"), separate parameters can be set for each ID. Authentication mode (connection to a PC) is available to choose from: by Hardware ID, password or user permission. Thus, you can minimally protect your computer from unauthorized remote connections.

Summary

The main advantages of Ammyy Admin are speed of work, simple and fast interface, relative independence from Ammyy servers and free. This is probably not the best solution for teamwork, but for individual use, with several computers at your disposal, it is quite.

Supremo Remote Desktop

Supremo Remote Desktop is a handy portable tool for remote control, remote assistance to other users. Works under Windows XP and above, mobile devices are not supported.

The program runs without installation, to get started, the host and client must download Supremo Remote Desktop from the developer's site. Traditionally, two modes of operation are supported: using a computer as an access point and connecting to a remote device. In the first case, access is opened by clicking the Start button. In the Your credentials section, the data required for connection are available: ID and password generated at the beginning of the session. The client requests authorization at login (Ask authorization option), thereby preventing unauthorized access to the computer.

To connect to the host, use the Your partner field, you can also select an address from the Address Book. The list of active connections is displayed in the Connections section of the main program window.

During transmission, the HTTPS (SSL) protocol is used, the data is encrypted. Security settings are weakly disclosed: you can set a password for starting the program, specify the IDs allowed for the connection.

Other tools available in Supremo Remote Desktop include multiple user connections to one machine. To transfer files, a manager is used, which is similar to the classic two-panel; upload and download of files is available. No presentation or multimedia features are provided. This certainly limits the use of Supremo as a remote assistant.

Summary

Supremo Remote Desktop is an easy-to-use program with a standard set of remote control tools. It can be noticed by users who do not need multimedia functions.

[+] No router configuration required

mRemoteNG

Speaking about universal tools that allow you to work with several protocols at the same time, it is worth mentioning mRemoteNG. The program opens access to VNC, ICA, SSH, Telnet, RAW, Rlogin and HTTP / S, there is also RDP support. It is distributed in a portable and standard version of the installer for the Windows platform.

The interface of mRemoteNG is presented in several sections, there are panels, tabularity - as a result, the user can easily customize the appearance of the program in his own way. The main options are available in the "Configuration" section. Here you can specify the protocol required for connection and related parameters: connection settings, protocol, gateway, appearance, resources, and others. The "Configuration" displays the connection status of the host.

The connection to the devices is carried out through the quick connection panel - here it is easy to create several configurations, which, in the case of many protocols, is very convenient. Connections can be grouped and configurations are easy to import / export.

File transfer is carried out via the SSH protocol - which is not very familiar for an ordinary user and at the same time, more reliable in terms of security. Additional features include a port scanner, and external tools can be added to the list.

The indistinctness of mRemoteNG is striking. This manifests itself in an unusual interface: it is not so convenient to use and configure with each specific protocol. In the connection configuration, many parameters are reduced beyond recognition - this can be attributed to the quality of localization. When you try to find a description of functions, the documentation is silent, its sections are empty.

Summary

A notable feature of mRemoteNG is the integration of popular protocols into a single graphical shell. By configuring multiple connections, there is no need for multiple specialized solutions. This plus to some extent compensates for the non-intuitiveness of the program and the lack of documentation.

TightVNC

Home page: http://www.tightvnc.com/

TightVNC Software develops several products: TightProjector, RFB Player, VNC Reflector and TightVNC. TightVNC is a remote control program that can be used to solve computer problems, for educational purposes, and for administration.

TightVNC is a cross-platform solution. For Linux, however, at the time of this writing, only the old version of the program is available, Mac OS is not supported. However, there is a Java platform version of TightVNC, which allows for remote control via a web server. On the Windows platform, TightVNC is installed as a regular application or as a system service. The "quiet" mode is supported, it is quite easy to transfer the configuration to other computers or remotely update the servers.

The TightVNC toolkit is divided into two modules: WinVNC, which is the server side installed on the remote machine, and the Viewer application, which is used to view the screen contents of the remote server. In the Viewer connection settings, the VNS server address and baud rate are set.

It should be noted that TightVNC does not generate an access password; you need to define it yourself in the settings. You can find out the connection status by displaying the icon in the notification area: if at least one user is connected to the computer, the icon colors change.

The developers hint that data transmission via VNC, despite the original DES-password protection, is imperfect. For security reasons, it is recommended to use SSH tunneling. At the same time, TightVNC settings can reduce the chance of unauthorized access to zero. In future versions of the program, it is also planned to introduce more reliable methods of protection.

Summary

TightVNC surprises with a large number of settings related to connection, security. This is a good choice for an administrator, but in terms of transfer to the server and further maintenance, it is not the best option for an inexperienced user.

[+] Flexible configuration
[+] Java version

Remote utilities

Remote Utilities is a solution, according to the developer, intended for small and medium-sized businesses. Remote control is possible directly via a local network or the Internet. The toolbox does not require any firewall adjustments or preconfigurations.

The complex works only under Windows, for Linux it is proposed to install the Wine emulator - but only for working with RUT-Viewer. There is no mobile version.

Remote Utilities consists of three modules: the viewer is installed on the local computer, the host is installed on the remote computer, and the agent is a module for supporting users. The agent, it should be noted, is optimal for quickly establishing communication between the client and the host. Remote installation as well as upgrading is easy thanks to the Remote installation tool.

Connection in one of the above modes is performed using the New connection dialog (Connection → Add Computer), as an access point, you can specify an IP address, Internet ID or DNS. The connected computer is added to the address book list, from which the necessary devices are subsequently selected.

Standard remote control tools are provided, such as remote device manager, registry viewer, terminal and file manager. Two-pane manager, with the ability to copy and move data, launch and open applications and documents on a remote host. Also in the presence of support for terminals, power control.

Text chat is pretty straightforward, but keep in mind that Remote Utilities also offers audio / video chats to users. It is worth mentioning the ability to capture video and adjust the transmission quality - from 24-bit color to optimized "picture" for a network with limited transmission (in addition, there is a Network usage mode parameter in the Properties settings of the remote computer). In a word, there are those features that have been repeatedly listed in similar programs with RDP support.

Remote Utilities offers 3 types of authorization, AES encryption with a 256-bit key, a 2048-bit public key. Incoming connections are filtered by IP; you can also create a list of trusted users with different access rights. Security subsystem is optional: you can choose RUT or WinNT. Both modes allow you to flexibly configure access to certain functions for each user; there are no significant differences between them.

Summary

A simple set of utilities for remote connection, without choosing a connection protocol, but very clear in installation and configuration. Essentially, there is a lack of cross-platform and user-friendly interface for simultaneous work with multiple devices.

Many who have faced the problem of the impossibility of controlling (or administering) their computer remotely and in real time do not even assume that remote administration exists. Frankly, until recently, I also did not know about the existence of such. Let's shed some light on some of the subtleties regarding this issue.

Remote administration

So, as mentioned above, remote administration allows you to get remote access to a specific computer (for example, via the Internet or LAN) and gives you the ability to control your personal computer from a distance.

In fact, remote administration is a new opportunity to make your work as comfortable and high-quality as possible, all the time being "online" to distribute the work schedule, consult with colleagues and give effective corrections at work moments.

Remote administration provides the user with almost complete control over a remote computer, in fact, for this purpose, remote administration programs are created that make it possible to control the desktop, copy and delete files, run applications, etc. from a distance.

Remote administration programs

Remote administration programs are currently the most popular. Due to their accessibility to an ordinary user, they are mostly free, support work with all popular operating systems, for smartphones and in general have long been "saving" all advanced users. Forgot to download / move a file on your work computer - remote administration will help you. Other actions are required up to changing the pictures from the desktop - no problem. The interface is easy to understand for most users, regardless of whether they are experienced PC users or not. There are two types of interface: visual and console, so there can be no problems with it. More details about each of the two types will be discussed below.

The visual interface provides more options in terms of graphics; using high quality pictures allows you to find a particular folder, template or photo much faster. The visual interface is ideal for people who consider themselves not the most experienced PC or smartphone users. Quite often, the visual interface is simplified to the maximum.

The console interface has more functions available to the user. According to experienced users, it is more productive and has text lines that allow you to set a fairly wide range of commands in the shortest possible time. The console interface is ideal for embedded system applications, is less expensive and even less requires special software.

There are many programs for remote administration, the most famous are:

  • Radmin
  • AnyDesk
  • Team Viewer
  • Windows RDP
But naturally, it is best to work with a team of specialists who provide assistance with the correct settings for remote administration and software configuration in general.

Linux remote administration

Let's turn our attention to Linux remote administration. Linux is the generic name for Unix-like operating systems based on the kernel of the same name. Linux is currently leading the market for smartphones, internet servers, data centers and enterprises, and more. Linux does not require a lot of system or other software and has an excellent set of features that speak for themselves.

The editors hope that the information provided above will allow you to more easily handle remote administration programs. In the end, they were invented for our convenience. We wish you good luck, for all questions regarding the purchase of remote administration programs, you can find the answers on the links provided in the text.

Once upon a time, programs for remote administration were needed only in enterprises, where one person had to serve dozens or even hundreds of computers that were located in different offices and on different floors. Today the scope of their application is much wider.

Firstly, many apartments have more than one computer, and a network is stretched between them for faster information transfer. If the computers are in different rooms, then the remote administration program makes it possible to work on two PCs at the same time, without getting up from the chair.

Secondly, as a rule, people constantly work with two computers - home and work. Remote administration programs allow you to monitor what is happening on another computer via the Internet, therefore, while sitting at home, you can control how the download is going through eMule at work, or, conversely, while at work, observe who your wife is talking to at home on ICQ.

In short, a program for remote administration is a must for everyone who has more than one computer at their disposal. Today's review will help you choose between the two.

First, a little theory. Most programs for remote administration consist of two parts - a server and a client (also called a viewer or viewer). The first is installed on a remote machine, that is, on the one that needs to be managed. The client part is installed on the computer from which you plan to control another PC. In order for the client to work, the server part must be running on the remote PC, therefore, when installing on a remote PC, it is better to put the program in "Startup" immediately.

In addition, if a firewall is used on computers, it is imperative that you create a rule to allow remote administration applications, otherwise the firewall may decide that the connection to the PC is an outside attack and prevent the connection.

Remote Administrator (Radmin) 2.2

Radmin is one of the most popular programs for monitoring a remote computer among Russian-speaking users. There are several reasons for this: firstly, the program was developed by a Russian company and therefore has a full-fledged Russian interface. Secondly, Radmin has only the most essential tools for managing a remote PC and is very easy to configure. This makes it easy to master. Finally, thirdly, the program has a small distribution package that can be easily sent by mail.

Radmin operates in several modes: file transfer, full control, view only, telnet and shutdown. There is a built-in file manager with which files are transferred from one PC to another. The program keeps statistics on the traffic used and can encrypt data.

With Radmin, you can control one remote computer or several at once. Moreover, for each you can set your own password. If you need to provide an increased level of security, you can take additional precautions: turn on brute-force protection and create a list of denied IP addresses.

If you are working on a network with slow data transfer rates, you can reduce the number of colors that appear on the client screen. This will speed up your work with a remote PC.

Remote Administrator is distributed as shareware, the trial version can be downloaded from here.

Symantec pcAnywhere 12

Symantec pcAnywhere is without a doubt a systems administrator's dream. The range of possibilities offered by this program is simply huge. It is not just a tool for "spying" on the actions of users on remote PCs, but a powerful tool for controlling all the functions of a computer. All the actions that administrators usually have to do when moving from one computer to another in a building can be performed remotely using pcAnywhere.

For example, the program has a tool for managing operating system services, an editor for working with the registry, a tool for working with the command line, the ability to remove or suspend the execution of applications, and even a chat with the user. Another useful feature is access to the event log. It is especially useful if a user complains about a problem and claims that he “didn’t do ANYTHING.” By looking at the log, you can immediately see all the user's actions and, having figured out the cause of the problem, solve it.

The file manager should be mentioned separately. With pcAnywhere, you can not only copy and delete files from one PC to another, but you can also perform many other operations. For example, determine the order of copying, interrupt it and later resume from the same place, compare folders, perform synchronization, etc.

Symantec pcAnywhere does not have a trial version, and on the official site you can only get acquainted with its capabilities.

UltraVNC 1.02

The main advantage of this program over other applications presented in the review is the free status. It is in no way inferior to many commercial products, and in some cases even surpasses them.

One of the interesting features of the program is fine-tuning the server side. If for some reason you want to hide the presence of a server program on the remote computer, you can open the program settings window by clicking on the icon in the notification area and restrict user rights. For example, you can prevent the program from closing and changing its settings from the server, as well as hide the icon in the system tray so that curious people have fewer questions.

It is worth noting that the remote administration tools that are implemented in UltraVNC suggest that the program was created with the thought of recalcitrant users in mind. In addition to the parameters described above, there is also a useful ability to block the mouse and keyboard on a remote PC during a connection to it. If you enable it, the user will not jerk the mouse, interfering with your work. By the way, there is also a possibility that is opposite in purpose - the View Only mode. If you activate it, you can only monitor the remote computer without performing any actions on it. This is convenient if you do not want to detect your presence and accidentally give yourself away by hitting the mouse.

All basic tools for managing a remote computer are collected in the upper part of the viewer window. Using these buttons, you can, for example, execute CTRL + ALT + DEL on your PC, open the "Start" menu, switch from horse view mode to full screen, refresh the screen if the picture "freezes", call a chat window or file manager. Overall, the management tools are very easy to use.

You can download the latest version of the program from the official.

RemotelyAnywhere 7

RemotelyAnywhere is an unusual administration program. Unlike other similar utilities, it consists of only one part - the server, and the browser acts as the client. In other words, you only need to install the program on the computer to which you want to connect. This is very convenient if you want to carry out remote administration from a computer on which you cannot install any programs, for example, if this computer is in an educational institution, in an Internet cafe or at work.

For operation, the program uses a special ActiveX-component of the browser and uses its own data exchange protocol. When the server is installed and running, the computer can be accessed by entering the address https: // your_IP: 2000 (if you intend to work with the program via the Internet) or https: // computer_name: 2000 (if you intend to connect via a local network) in the browser. After that, you need to specify the username and password that are used to log into Windows on the remote computer. Connection security is ensured by NTLM authentication, protected by a 1024-bit key.

After connecting, the browser window will display detailed information about the remote PC, including its configuration, hard disk fullness, processor load, network activity, etc.

All commands available for execution are located in the left part of the window and are presented in the form of a tree of links. Their set is quite large: chat, file manager, control of Windows services, viewing the event log and a list of users who have connected to the computer. RemotelyAnywhere also has a Task Scheduler that allows you to perform various tasks on a remote PC on a schedule. For convenience, the list of scheduled tasks is displayed in the main window, and you can also configure RemotelyAnywhere to send reports on their execution by e-mail.

RemotelyAnywhere is distributed as shareware, a trial version can be downloaded.

Conclusion

Despite the fact that all the programs presented in the review perform the same function, it is hardly possible to say unambiguously which is better and which is worse. The rich capabilities of Symantec pcAnywhere will be appreciated by administrators serving large corporate networks, Remote Administrator and UltraVNC are perfect for home use on multiple computers, and RemotelyAnywhere will be indispensable for those who lead a mobile lifestyle and do not know from which computer they will access the Internet. next time.
