Today I will continue the topic of converting DVD movies into a single file, format, for example, MP4, which is now much more important than opening a DVD on a computer or even worse - watching it on a TV set-top box.

This article will focus on the HandBrake program. This is another free converter video, which, in addition to converting ordinary video files, can convert and immediately DVD movie s to MP4 or MKV formats.

The main difference between this program and the ones I have already analyzed in the previous articles of MakeMKV and Free DVD Video Converter is that there is much more settings conversions related specifically to the final image that you will receive. That is, the HandBrake program is more suitable for experienced users than for beginners. However, in this article I will show specific example conversions DVD disc for getting original quality images and those who do not understand anything in the settings can simply repeat my actions and that's it!

Downloading and installing HandBrake software

The program can and should be downloaded from the official website of the developer using the link:

On the site page, click big button Download HandBrake and the program will start downloading to your computer immediately.

Then it will remain to run the downloaded setup file and install the program.

There is nothing complicated or unusual during the installation process. No configuration is required, just keep clicking Next to continue until the installation is complete.

If you want to know about the nuances of installing programs for Windows, then read.

Convert DVD with HandBrake

Choosing a video to convert

Immediately after starting the program, a window will appear for selecting the video that you will convert. 2 options are offered:

Open a folder with several files at once (Folder. Batch Scan). This option is just needed when converting DVD video, since movies in this format are a set of files in the VIDEO_TS folder.

Open one file (File). This item should be selected when you want to convert any video from a separate file(not a DVD!).

Thus, select Folder to select DVD. Will now open windows explorer where you need to select the folder where your DVD video is stored. Just select the VIDEO_TS folder from your DVD.

If your DVD movie is located directly on a DVD disc, then you can convert from there, but in order to avoid malfunctions (since discs can sometimes glitch during reading and writing), I recommend transferring the VIDEO_TS folder from the DVD disc to your computer and specify folder on your computer!

After selecting the folder from the DVD, the program will read the contents within a few seconds and you can configure the conversion.

Some DVD movies may have problems and the program will not be able to load them. For example, I got one such disk, apparently, the structure is somehow incorrectly made in it and HandBrake (as well as some other programs) does not read it into any, while a window with reading will be displayed, ad infinitum:

In this case, only closing the program helps. But you will not be able to convert this DVD through this program, as well as through Free DVD Video Converter. In this case, try MakeMKV, it should work, but it only converts to MKV format... Or use some other converter.

After selecting DVD, a window with conversion settings will open.

Conversion settings

Selecting a folder to save the final video

First of all, select the folder where the final video file will be saved. To do this, click Browse at the top, under the Destination heading and specify the desired folder.

Below, under the Output Settings heading, select the format of the final video, this is either MP4 or MKV. I recommend MP4 as the most popular one. You do not need to check any more checkboxes in this block.

Now let's move on to the settings for the conversion quality and compression ratio.

Adjusts the aspect ratio of the video. Picture Tab

The Pitcure tab sets the aspect ratio of the final video. It must be set the same as in the original video so that the final image is not distorted. Typically, video on DVD has a 720 × 576 aspect ratio.

You can check this by opening the properties of some file named VTS_01_.VOB ( right click mouse over the file and select “Properties”) and clicking on the “Details” tab. There will be specified the width and height of the frame, this is the original resolution of the DVD. Also from there in the future the parameters "Overall stream rate" (called "Bitrate") and "Frame rate" will come in handy. It is better to leave these data the same when converting.

To keep the aspect ratio the same, set the Anamorphic option to Loose, and then experiment with the Modulus values so that at the top, where Width and Height are specified, you get the original ratio, for example, 720 × 576.

If we take the ratio as in my example, then, most likely, Modulus will be = 8 or 16 (I did not see the difference). With other values, the Height changes.

Filters tab settings

Go to the Filters tab. Here, set the values as in the image below:

Although these settings are optimal in 99% of cases, pay attention to the Deinterlace option. This option is enabled in order to eliminate the combing effect (as if pointed, the edges of objects, as if there is no anti-aliasing) in the video, which often appears after converting DVD. Usually, when converting DVD, this option should be enabled by selecting Decomb, but it may be that this option is not needed. In this case, you can try to convert a small piece of video (I'll show you how to do it below) by turning this option off (Off), and then again the same piece, setting Decomb and compare the result.

Settings on the Video tab

Here specify the Framerate (frames per second) the same as the original video (“Frame rate” from the file properties, which I mean). Usually a DVD has 25 frames. Alternatively, select the Same as source option to trust the program to set the frame rate to the same frame rate as the original DVD.

Enable the Constant Framerate option.

In the Optimize Video section, you can adjust the conversion speed, which will affect the video compression. The faster the video is converted, the larger the resulting video will be. One way or another, if you adjust the video parameters as in the original or close to it, then the final video will not greatly exceed the original size. Regular DVD the movie is about 4 GB in size.

To expose maximum speed conversion, move the Encoder Preset slider all the way to the left.

The closer the slider is to the right, the slower the conversion will be, but the more program will try to compress the video to get a smaller file size.

On the right, in the Quality block, the quality is adjusted. final video... Here we have 2 options: adjust the quality by setting a value from 0 to 51 (Constant Quality item) where 0 is the maximum, 51 is the minimum.

Or enable the Avg Bitrate (kbps) option and specify the approximate bitrate of the original DVD (you can see it in the properties of one of the original DVD files). For example, if the initial bitrate is 10000, then you can put about 9000-9500 and get about 10000 at the output. A small difference will not affect anything.

If you set quality through the Constant Quality option, then you need to guess. For example, if the bitrate of the original video = 10000, then you need to set the value to about 14.

What is the point of not displaying the highest possible quality, you ask? And the fact is that the quality of the video will not be better than the source, however, at the same time you will get a huge bitrate (sometimes even exceeding 100,000) and the volume of the resulting video file will incredibly increase. For example, the original video was 4 GB, but it will become 20 GB, but the quality will not be higher in any way!

More, in general, nothing is required to configure. The program makes the sound the same as in the original video.

Conversion start

After setting all the conversion parameters, it remains to start the process by clicking the Start Encode button at the top.

The conversion process will be displayed in the lower left corner of the program and when it is finished, the message Queue Fished will appear.

It remains to check the result :)

How to start converting the desired video fragment!

The program has an excellent ability to convert not the entire video as a whole, but the desired fragment, for example, 1 minute from any section, a specific chapter or the required number of frames.

This is very useful when you just would like to check first what kind of video you get in the end, whether you did everything correctly in the settings, whether you are satisfied with the final quality.

In this case, it is enough to set 30 seconds to a minute for conversion from any part of the video, so that the conversion is completed in just a few seconds and you will immediately see the result.

You can select the desired piece for conversion at the top of the program settings window, under the Source heading. There is no need to change the Title and Angle options, and after them you will be able to select: Seconds, Chapters, Frames, which means “Seconds”, “Chapters”, “Frames”. The most convenient way is to select Seconds, then specify the start time from which the video will be converted and the end time (throught). Next to the Duration label on the right, the total duration of the convertible section that you have selected will be displayed.

Conclusion

HandBrake program does a good job of converting video, it allows you to preserve the quality of the original video. But for this you need to tweak the settings a little, otherwise the video may turn out to be distorted in aspect ratio or with reduced quality. Therefore, it would probably be easier for beginners to use analogs, for example, Free DVD Video Converter or MakeMKV, the articles about which I gave links at the very top.

All of our products use multiple processors whenever possible to speed up their performance. Also, if you have a powerful graphics adapter on your computer, it will also be used to speed up the conversion.

We have tried to make all of our products compatible with all operating systems Windows family... You shouldn't run into problems when using our programs.

Store dvd discs with important information, whether it's your children's holidays, or birthday parties, it's not quite the right approach. The disc can be damaged, scratched and eventually the video becomes unavailable for viewing.

So I thought about it, storing a video archive on a hard disk is much more convenient than on optical disks.

I already have programs like Any Video Converter and Freemake Video Converter installed on my system. With the help of the program data, I decided to convert the dvd disc into the usual format for a computer: avi, or mpeg4. I have already described these programs, so I did not look for other applications, especially since these two are completely free.

Free Make Video Converter

After installing this program, run it and press the DVD button.

If the program was able to open the DVD disc you were lucky, if not, like me, then we need to add a folder named "Video_TS" to the program.

Now we select the format of the outgoing video. For this, I chose the MP4 format at the very bottom. Optionally, the original file can be saved without sound, or vice versa done with best quality... You can specify the screen resolution, or its format.

Well, that's basically all, after the end of the conversion, Free Make Video Converter will show the duration of the conversion. The clips will be saved one at a time without connecting, so this program I didn't quite like it. Moreover, the conversion took as much as 3 hours, and this is only 1.5 videos. Sorry, it worked. It turned out that this software also supports file merging, but it's too late, keep in mind.

Any Video Convert

I decided to use this program a second time, but the video for conversion remained the same.

There is no such button as DVD, we need to manually add TC files to the shell. To do this, press the "Add files" button, and immediately enable the "Combine files" function.

By right side program, you choose the quality of the outgoing video. For myself, I chose 720x480 resolution, and left the rest of the parameters by default. But the program allows you to select videos for specific device whether it's a mobile phone or something else.

The next stage is needed to perform the conversion itself, just click the "Convert" button now it remains to wait a little and find out what we get at the output.

Auto gordian knot

This program turned out to be even easier to use than the two previous ones, since you only need to select the very first file from the DVD, and the rest of the application will do you.

How to convert?

1. Select a file on disk.

2. Specify the size of the source file. I prefer to use video quality. For example 85%. The lower the quality, the smaller the file size.

3. Click the Add Job button

4. Wait for the program to convert

After the end, a 1.3 GIG file was created. The video itself is 1.30 hours long. Conversion speed was only 1 hour 28 minutes, which is much better than 3 hours.

On this I think we can finish. All three programs proposed in the article are distributed completely free of charge.
