#4. Reconnect to the networkWiFi

If you can't connect to a Wi-Fi network, or you get a password error even though you entered it correctly, try forgetting the network and then connecting to it again.

To do this, select the Wi-Fi network in Settings >WiFi, and then click Forget this network. A window will pop up where you will need to confirm your action.

Now go back to Settings >WiFi, select the same network, enter the password and try to connect to it.

#5. Reset network settings

Most network problems can be resolved by resetting your settings. This will clear the cache, DHCP settings and other data. To do this, go to Settings > General > Reset and select Reset network settings.

#6. DisableVPN

If you have VPN enabled in Settings, or you are using a VPN application, try turning everything off. If you can't disable your VPN completely, do so at least temporarily to see if that's what's causing the problem.

#7. Disable system servicesWiFi

Many users find it helpful to disable system Wi-Fi services in Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services.

We have a laptop HP 15-af109ur. After replacing the hard drive and, accordingly, installing Windows 10 from scratch, everything was fine, except for one thing - the laptop had very poor Wi-Fi signal reception. Those. he barely saw only a couple of wifi networks from the many neighboring ones. It connected to my router, but the reception scale only reached one stick, which, of course, is not normal.

This article applies only to owners of Hewlett-Packard brand laptops. If you have another laptop that is also experiencing problems with wi-fi, try the tips in this article.

I’ll say right away that this situation can arise due to incorrectly connected antennas to the wi-fi adapter or their damage, but I have experience disassembling laptops, and I didn’t even consider this version. Therefore, there was only one option left - damned Windows 10 installed an incorrect driver for the wi-fi module from its update center.

Naturally, the first thing I did was go to the manufacturer’s website to look for the “correct driver.” It turned out that 2 types of drivers were posted on the HP website - for Intel Wireless LAN and for the “Realtek wireless network”.

Apparently, these laptops can have 2 types of adapters installed. Slowly mother of HP engineers, I started downloading both drivers. I downloaded and tried to install them, one by one. The result is zero. The laptop still only produced “one stick” 3 meters from the router.

What is also noteworthy is that the default driver installed had nothing in common with those posted on the HP Intel and Realtek website, and was identified in the task manager as Broadcom 802.11 Network Adapter.

After that, I downloaded and installed all possible auxiliary utilities from the site - HP Support Assistant, HP System Event, HP Recovery Manager, HP Wireless Button. Unfortunately, this did not bring any results.

Out of desperation I started Googling. A lot of advice was given, mostly all of them related to changing the wireless adapter driver settings. None of this, of course, helped.

Moreover, the order was urgent, time passed, but no solution was found. There was a lot of swearing, the idea of ​​calling HP and Microsoft support and saying a few kind words to them.

The solution came unexpectedly. Everything, it turns out, was quite simple.

So, in the case of Windows 10, the previously downloaded HP Support Assistant utility helped.

Having gone into this program, in the MY PC - UPDATES section, I found an available update for the Broadcom WiFi adapter. After clicking “Download and Install,” the laptop downloaded the update for the wireless network adapter driver from the HP server and installed it.

Oh, miracle!!! The list of available networks has expanded greatly, and my home network confidently showed full reception.

Why this driver was not posted on the official HP website is not clear to me. As a repairman who has gone through hundreds of laptops, I was previously very unfriendly towards this brand, and now my hatred for it has intensified even more.

Hi all. Probably many of you have Wi-Fi in your apartment? There have often been cases when the wi-fi signal on a laptop or smartphone in one room is good, but in another it is weak, or there is none at all, and accordingly there will be no Internet there.

In this article I will describe steps that will help you increase the signal strength so that it is equally strong anywhere in the apartment.

If the laptop does not receive Wi-Fi at a distance from the router, but everything is fine close by, then the Wi-Fi coverage area is too small and needs to be expanded.

First, let's look at why the wi-fi signal is weak.

The coverage range of the wi-fi network is approximately 40 meters, but in open areas. In the apartment, in the path of the signal there is an obstacle in the form of walls. And if the wall is reinforced, it is even more difficult for the signal to get through it. But if the signal still breaks through one wall, then after two or more, perhaps there will be nothing left of it.

Also, a weak signal may be due to a low-quality router (wi-fi access point).

Let's imagine the location of a wi-fi router in an apartment. The picture below shows the coverage area of ​​the Wi-Fi router located in the far right room.

As you can see in the lower left room the signal will be very weak or not at all. This is the reason why Wi-Fi reception is poor.

The most obvious solution is to place the wi-fi router in the center of the apartment. But what if this is either impossible, because... When connecting, the Internet provider left too little cable or repairs have already been made.

To do this, you can purchase a second Wi-Fi router that can work as a repeater (required!) and place it on the other side of the apartment. The main thing is that the wi-fi network of the main router is within reach.

The advantage of this method is that there is no need to lay additional wires; the routers connect to each other via Wi-Fi.

First, make sure you know the password for your existing Wi-Fi network. If not, then you can “look at it in the network connection settings.” For this:

  • Go to network connections If you have Windows 10, go to Settings -> Network and Internet -> Configure adapter settings. If you have Windows 7, go to “Control Panel” -> “Networks” -> “Network and Sharing Center” -> “Configure adapter settings”
  • Find your wireless connection as shown in the picture.
  • On the Security tab, in the “Network Security Key” field, click “Display entered characters.”

Now that you know the key of your wi-fi network, you can start setting up a second router.

To configure the router, follow these steps.

Connect the second router to your laptop using a cable to the LAN port. To avoid getting confused with connections, temporarily disable the Wi-Fi receiver on your laptop.

After establishing a local network connection, enter the address 192.168.1.1 (or 192.168.0.1) in the browser. When prompted for a login and password, enter the login - admin, password - admin. All routers come with this log and password from the factory (also look at the “belly” of the router). If you have previously changed it, you will have to enter your username and password, or reset the router to factory settings.

After you have logged in, you need to change the operating mode of the router. To do this, click on “Operation mode”.

In the operating mode selection window, select “Repeater mode”

Then select yours from the list of active networks and click “Connect”

When prompted for a network key, enter the security key of your wi-fi network, which we learned earlier.

Afterwards the connection to the network will occur.

It should be noted that the IP address of your second router will change, which it will report as in the figure below.

This completes the setup. Now both wi-fi routers distribute wi-fi throughout the apartment.

I described setting up the repeater mode for the ASUS KE-G32 router. For other routers, the setup process will be different, but the principle is the same. More and more often, I notice questions in the comments about the same problem, but the problem is this: devices (laptops, smartphones, tablets) connect to Wi-Fi without problems, the network level is good, but the Internet only works close to the router. That is, if you move away from the router, for example, a meter or two, then there is a connection to the router, the network is excellent, but the Internet no longer works. If you place the device next to the router, the Internet works, sites open, etc.

A very strange problem that appears on both mobile devices and laptops. Moreover, there are cases when all devices access the Internet only at a certain distance from the Wi-Fi router. And it also happens that only a laptop, for example, works next to the router, and a smartphone or tablet works away from the router.

Here, I found a question on this problem:

There were many similar comments; now they are difficult to find. One more thing, everyone wrote about different distances, at which distance from the Wi-Fi router, problems with Internet access began. For some, everything worked perfectly within a few meters, and for others, within a few centimeters.

Honestly, at the moment, I don’t know what exactly the problem is, and why it happens that the Internet works near the router, but if you move a couple of meters away, the Internet disappears. And the most important feature is that the network is good.

Why did I decide to write this article if I don’t know the solution? Below, I will write my assumptions and give some tips on what you can try to fix this problem. And yet, I really hope that together we can resolve this issue and make an informative article. As was the case with the article on the problem with Wi-Fi in Windows 8. When I wrote it, I did not know a single working solution, but now there are five working tips that have already helped many. And for this, many thanks to the visitors who shared solutions and even provided screenshots.

Does the Internet stop working if you move away from the router?

There is a problem, that’s clear, and if there is a problem, then you need to look for a solution. Now I will write what I think about this problem. Some tips you can try and check, and write about the results in the comments.

  • The first thing that comes to my mind is interference on the channel on which a certain network operates. Everything is logical: near the router, the signal is strong, and the Internet works. And if we move further away, then interference appears and the Internet stops working. Despite the fact that the network level and connection status remain excellent. You need to try changing the channel of your network. I wrote about this in the article “How to change the channel on a Wi-Fi router? Why change the channel?” Try different options. Perhaps this will help.
  • It may be that the problem is in the router itself, and the problem is technical. That is, the problem is in the router hardware. Especially if these problems occur on all the devices you connect. It is difficult to say what exactly the problem is. Check if the Wi-Fi antenna is screwed in well (if you have them removed). It would be a good idea to check the problematic router in another place.
  • It may be that the problem is in the device itself. Check how the same laptop or tablet works with a different network. Perhaps I’m writing a lie now, but it seems to me that there was a comment in which it was written that the problem was in the laptop’s Wi-Fi antenna, which simply unsoldered or jumped out of its socket.
  • Reboot the router, reset the settings and configure it again, update the firmware - you can also try all this.

Why is Wi-Fi poor at home?

Just 10 years ago, a wireless network at home was the domain of only advanced users who were willing to overpay several thousand for a radio module in a modem or router. Today, almost every apartment in a typical high-rise building has a WiFi access point.

In general, this is good - people are no longer tied to wires: they can watch videos in bed before going to bed or read the news on a tablet while drinking a cup of morning coffee. But on the other hand, a number of new problems arise that, in principle, cannot arise with conventional cable networks. One of these is poor Wi-Fi reception at home or in the apartment.

The whole difficulty is that the user is left alone with this problem: the provider’s technical support will not deal with this because it is not their problem, and the service center can only test your router or modem and issue a conclusion about its serviceability or failure. They will not deal with a working device at all. Meanwhile, the main reasons for poor Wi-Fi reception are not so numerous. Let's list them.

Frequency range is overloaded

This is the most common reason why residents of apartment buildings suffer. The fact is that the 2.4 GHz band, which is used by conventional access points on routers and modems, has a limited number of radio channels. In the Russian segment there are 13 of them, and in Europe, for example, there are even fewer - only 11. And non-overlapping ones, that is, those that do not influence each other, are generally only 3 pieces. Now start searching for networks on your laptop or phone.

If about 10 access points are detected, approximately like the screenshot above, then you shouldn’t be surprised that Wi-Fi reception at home is poor! Reason - the range is overloaded! And the more points there are in the neighborhood, the worse your reception will be. Many forums and blogs advise trying to select channels in the hope of catching a less busy one. I consider this useless, since with such a density of access points, the load on each of the radio channels changes several times a day, which means that all the work on selection will be pointless. There is a way out of the situation, but it will be expensive - this is a transition to another WiFi band - 5 GHz.

It is almost entirely free and problems with frequency crossing will not arise for a very long time. Unfortunately, you will have to fork out for a new router (minimum 3000-4000 rubles) and Wi-Fi adapters for all devices (1000-1500 rubles apiece). But the problem with the “neighbors” will be completely resolved.

Incorrect router location

This reason for poor WiFi signal reception is also very common both in apartments and private houses. The culprits here are most often the installers from the provider. To install a router faster and save twisted pair cables, they install an access device either directly in the corridor or in the nearest room. After that, they place the laptop next to it, set up access and show it to the subscriber. Of course, everything works fine and the master is quickly removed. And then all the “fun” begins - the user discovers that in the far rooms of the house Wi-Fi reception is very poor, or there is no reception at all. But you just had to spend an extra 5-10 minutes and choose the right location for the access point. In the apartment it will look like this:

That is, it is necessary to place the AP so that it covers the home as much as possible. You can walk around the corners with your phone or tablet and check where the signal level is, and then adjust the location of the router taking into account the required coverage area.

In a large private house the situation may be more complicated. If it has several floors and concrete floors, then it is best to additionally install WiFi repeaters on the upper floors.

Connecting them to the main router not via WDS, but with a cable, will avoid loss of speed.

Tip: Never try to bring a laptop, tablet or phone as close as possible to the access point - the effect can be completely opposite: the signal quality can become even worse than it was at a distance. There should be a distance of at least a couple of meters between devices.

Router software settings

Any wireless WiFi access point is a combination of not only hardware, but also software parameters, each of which can affect the quality of wireless network coverage. Incorrect configuration or selection of device characteristics can easily cause poor Wi-Fi reception for connected clients. So, on many modern routers, in the advanced settings of the wireless module you can find the Transmit Power parameter - this is the signal strength with which the access point distributes WiFi.

I have repeatedly encountered devices where it was set to 40% or even just 20%. This may be enough within one room, but in neighboring rooms the signal level will be low. To fix this, try gradually increasing the “Transmit Power” parameter and checking the result. It is likely that you will have to give everything 100%.

The second parameter, which also has a very significant impact on both the coverage area and the data transfer speed in the wireless network, is Mode. The fastest and longest range is the 802.11N standard.

Therefore, if your Wi-Fi network at home has poor reception, try forcing the “802.11N Only” mode. The fact is that due to certain circumstances, in mixed mode (B/G/N), the access point may switch to the slower G mode. Accordingly, the quality of network coverage will be lower.

Weak antenna

Now let's move directly to the hardware of the access point. Many users, having bought the simplest and cheapest router, hope that it will produce a signal like a powerful military radar, penetrating all the walls and ceilings in an apartment or house. Let's look at a typical representative of the economy class - the D-Link DIR-300 D1 wireless router.

As you can see, it does not have external antennas and there is not even a connector for connecting them. A weak 2 dBi antenna is hidden inside. It is quite enough for a one-room apartment. And only... For a large “three ruble” or, even more so, a private house, the power of this device is not enough at all, which means you need to buy something more powerful. For example, let's look at the same model - ASUS RT-N12:

On the left you see a simple option with 3 dBi antennas, which is suitable for a small apartment. But on the right is the same router, but a modification with amplified 9dBi antennas, which should be quite enough for a large private house.

Do not forget that in order to improve the quality of work on a WiFi network, it is not only the router that can be strengthened. An additional antenna can also be connected to a computer’s wireless adapter:

But owners of laptops and netbooks are out of luck - their devices do not have an RP-SMA connector, which means connecting an external antenna in this case is impossible.

Note: If your range is overloaded, which I talked about at the very beginning of the article, and you hope to solve the problem of poor Wi-Fi reception by replacing the router antennas with more powerful ones, do not waste your money, because this most likely will not help you. The “noise” of the airwaves will not go away, which means that even if the signal level becomes higher, the data transfer speed and stability will constantly fall. In addition, a so-called “cold war” may begin between you and your neighbors, when everyone will strengthen the signal in different ways. And, in fact, there is only one solution - switching to the extended range.

Device hardware failure

Do not forget that the cause of a poor wireless network signal may be simply poor quality of soldering contacts. One of my friends went through his entire network at home, changed the router several times until, quite by accident, he discovered that the connected iPhone was working perfectly, but the laptop practically could not see the network. As it turned out, due to shaking in the bag, the poorly soldered contact of the internal antenna of the laptop computer fell off and, accordingly, the adapter began to catch the home Wi-Fi network very poorly. By the way, I have repeatedly heard that similar cases have occurred on many smartphones and tablets, both cheap and expensive.

I often get asked questions about the problem when Wi-Fi disappears on a laptop or computer. It doesn’t just disconnect from the network, but the Wi-Fi adapter and the connection itself completely disappear. In Windows, everything related to Wi-Fi disappears. There is no wireless adapter in network connections. There is no "Wi-Fi" button, no icon in the notification panel and no section in the settings (if we are talking about Windows 10). In the device manager there is also no WLAN (Wireless) adapter, which is responsible for connecting to wireless networks. Well, accordingly, the computer does not see the Wi-Fi network, and there is no way to connect to it.

In most cases, the problem appears suddenly. Everything worked, turned off the laptop, turned it on and there was no Wi-Fi on the laptop at all. In some cases, such a problem may appear after updating Windows or drivers. Or maybe after installing some program, or changing settings. From my own experience, I can say that it is not uncommon for Wi-Fi to disappear after cleaning the laptop from dust or repairing it.

Two important points:

  • It happens that the laptop simply does not see a specific network, or all networks. In this case, the adapter is in the device manager, there are settings related to the wireless network, etc. This is a slightly different problem, which I wrote about in the article and.
  • It may also be that he himself. In this case, the network is not available on all devices.

To find a solution, you must first understand the cause. Why did it happen that the laptop suddenly stopped seeing Wi-Fi networks and there are no settings related to this at all.

  • You need to think and remember what you did before the problem appeared. Perhaps the solution will come on its own.
  • Restart your laptop. If you have Windows 10, you need to reboot. Not Off/On.
  • If you have a PC with an external Wi-Fi adapter, check if it is connected. Try connecting to a different USB port. Notice whether the light on the adapter is blinking.
  • If Wi-Fi disappeared after cleaning or repairing the laptop, then most likely it was simply not connected (poorly connected, damaged) the Wi-Fi module itself in the laptop. If you did this yourself, then disassemble the laptop and check the connection of the Wi-Fi module and antenna.

In Device Manager, open the "Network Adapters" tab. Most likely, you will not find an adapter there whose name includes “Wireless”, “WLAN”, “Wi-Fi”. And that's exactly what we need.

See if there is an unknown device in Device Manager. Or devices with a yellow exclamation mark. If there is, then it is quite possible that this is our wireless adapter, which simply has problems with the drivers.

Pay special attention to the "Other devices" section. Is there something like "Network Controller" there?

If it is, then you just need to install the driver.

How to solve the problem and return the Wi-Fi adapter?

Unfortunately, as I wrote above in the article, in most cases this is a hardware problem. That is, a breakdown of the module itself. And programmatically (some kind of settings) it cannot be solved. You need to change the module itself, or connect an external adapter via USB. If it's a laptop.

All solutions boil down to reinstalling the Wi-Fi driver. Perhaps if the adapter itself is working, this will help. Well, you can also reinstall Windows. There may be something in the system, but it is very unlikely.

And so, let's return to the driver. You just need to go to the laptop manufacturer’s website, use a search to find your model and download the driver for WLAN (Wi-Fi). Then run its installation. If at the beginning of the driver installation an error appears that the device was not detected in the system, or something like that, then I am almost sure that this is a hardware failure.

Before reading this article, I turned the router off/on to the outlet - it helped, but not for long, soon everything returned to normal. I thought that the problem was in the large number of connected devices (three smartphones, two tablets, a laptop, a computer, plus an aimac and a printer are locally connected to the router itself (on which the connection also disappears)), but even when one smartphone is connected to the router, nothing happens changes, the connection still disappears.

After reading the article, I looked into the channel settings: for a regular connection there was channel 13, and for a 5G connection there was an auto channel. But, alas, no matter how I turned it (both static and automatic), nothing changed.

By the way, for the first six months after purchase, the router worked stably (the only thing was that the cord that came with the kit died very quickly, but fortunately, the same one came from the previous router). Then this story began.
