How Apple CarPlay works. Apple CarPlay review in my car

On the creation of an autonomous car or software for such vehicles. However, why go far - for the past two years, Cupertino has been releasing wonderful CarPlay software for cars. The system is extremely easy to use and provides quick access to music and Apple Maps, and allows you to make phone calls.

In contact with

The CarPlay system does not use Bluetooth, and the iPhone is connected using a Lightning cable.

Once connected, iPhone automatically syncs with CarPlay.

The CarPlay display is very similar to the iPhone screen! That is, CarPlay can actually be considered as an additional smartphone monitor built into the car dashboard. Switching apps on iPhone will also switch apps on the CarPlay display and vice versa.

CarPlay lets you make Handsfree calls from your iPhone

This is not to say that CarPlay can absolutely everything. However, the system allows you to talk on the phone, exchange text messages, use Apple Maps, listen to music and other audio files - what else do you need while driving a car?

Apps for CarPlay

There are a number of apps that support CarPlay, including Audiobooks and several podcast apps.

Apple Maps (unfortunately, so far only in big European cities) works great! They provide turn-by-turn directions and a screen showing the next turn just like any GPS navigator.

If you prefer Google Maps or Waze, you're out of luck. There is a big difference between CarPlay and Android Auto (Google-developed dashboard software). The Apple system can play Google Maps voice prompts through the car's speakers, but the maps themselves will not be displayed on the screen.

Music control in CarPlay

Where CarPlay is unrivaled is in the playback of music and other audio files. It is very convenient that the smartphone can be controlled using the song switching buttons.

The "Now Playing" screen is equipped with large touch buttons that allow you to pause songs and scroll through playlists.

Many owners of tablets and phones from Apple have heard more than once about the CarPlay application, which allows you to control the car's electronics and the functions of a particular gadget in one place and using a convenient interface.

At the moment, there are no analogues to this program, and, most likely, it is not expected in the near future, since an increasing number of automakers are adapting the electronics of their cars specifically for Apple CarPlay.

In addition to adapting the "apple" application for specific cars, there is also the formation of programs that can work under its supervision. One of these may be Yandex Navigator. In today's material, we will talk specifically about a possible symbiosis of navigation from Yandex and multi-application from Apple.

A few words about Apple CarPlay

Apple CarPlay is a gadget software from the company of the same name. An application of this kind does not need to be downloaded to the phone: it is either installed by default in the car's multimedia system, or it is not included in it and cannot be installed. At its core, Apple CarPlay is a program that allows you to:

  • Firstly, to organize a user-friendly interface in communication with the car's electronics.
  • Secondly, to use multimedia machines in a more familiar format for the user.
  • And thirdly, the driver should not be distracted by functions that can only be performed by a phone while driving, since you can use them by accessing the standard car control panel (for example, make the same calls or use Yandex Navigator).

Checking if your specific car has Apple CarPlay support or not is very simple. To do this, just connect with a USB cable to the car's electronics (usually, the connector is located somewhere on the dashboard) and see what happened to the touch screen control of your car's electronics. If its interface has changed to Apple's, then CarPlay is supported by your vehicle's electronics. Otherwise, an iPhone or iPad from an American manufacturer will work like a regular phone connected to the car's electronics. The approximate interface is shown in the picture below.

In the event that you are still lucky and Apple CarPlay is supported, then using this application it is possible:

  • use car multimedia to watch videos, listen to music and connect to the Internet;
  • displays navigators and maps on the big screen;
  • make calls and send SMS messages through a large touch screen, without being distracted by a small gadget while driving;
  • control the operation of the systems and components of the machine;
  • as well as do a number of other functions through the use of the auto touch panel and voice control.

Thus, it turns out that Apple CarPlay is the most convenient tool for using car electronics in symbiosis with the functions of gadgets from the manufacturer of the same name. However, it is worth noting that this application is only supported by devices with an IOS operating system above version 7.1 (all iPhones from the fifth model).

Important! Every month, the list of Apple CarPlay-enabled cars and similar smart apps is expanding, so it is quite possible to expect that this program will be available to almost everyone in the near future.

Symbiosis of Apple CarPlay and Yandex Navigator

Many users of gadgets from the "apple" and, at the same time, active motorists are wondering - "How and, most importantly, why combine the work of Apple CarPlay and Yandex Navigator?". To answer this question first of all, let's look at the benefits of such a symbiosis of applications:

  • Convenient relaying of navigation and maps from Yandex to a large touch-screen multimedia car screen. This approach is not bad not only because of its ease of use, but also because it allows you to replace an expensive navigator with a large panel and separate multimedia devices using a regular phone or tablet.
  • The user's ability to control Yandex Navigator using voice. It was already mentioned earlier that Apple CarPlay is capable of receiving voice commands, however, we note that this application works on the latest voice command system, for example, capable of dialing the real number of a person who is signed in the contacts of your gadget "Ivan" upon request "Call Ivan" .
  • No need to be distracted by a small smartphone to get information from Yandex Navigator, and even more so constantly unlock the phone or carry out other manipulations. In the case of using Apple CarPlay, we repeat, all the necessary information is relayed to the multimedia screen for controlling the car's electronics.

To date, CarPlay and Yandex Navigator do not support each other, but this symbiosis can bring many benefits to motorists. Moreover, the joint work of these applications will allow the user of gadgets from Apple to refuse to use the extremely uninformative Google maps. And this in a difficult traffic situation will not be superfluous.

On this, perhaps, the most interesting information on the merger of Apple CarPlay and Yandex Navigator has come to an end. We hope that the above material was useful to you. Good luck on the roads!

Apple CarPlay Review:

Overview of Yandex Navigator:

Many people will agree that the current generation of young people do not want to travel; these guys want cars to drive instead of them. They don't want to buy their own car, in fact they don't want cars at all, they want smartphones. This trend is clearly noticed by automakers and developers of modern technology. So, back in 2014, at the Consumer Electronics exhibition, many technological developments were presented, including Apple CarPlay.

Apple clearly does not want to stand on the sidelines and plans to get a considerable piece of this pie. The preview version of Apple Car Play was shown back in 2013, but already in Geneva in 2014, the official debut of the new Apple CarPlay system was organized. Like many modern in-car communication systems, the principle of CarPlay is to allow the driver to do whatever they want without being distracted from driving.

The practical part of Apple CarPlay is quite simple, and this is a huge merit of the developers. It is for simplicity and consistency that Apple technology is valued. You just need to take your "apple" smartphone or tablet, connect it to the car interface and you're done! The car turns into a smartphone, as expected. The 21st century has arrived. The car computer is not capable of what iOS allows you to do. In fact, it has other tasks, such as reading data from all sorts of sensors.

This means that applications must be installed on your mobile device in order to see them on the display located on the car's center console. The touchpad works in the same way as the sensor on the phone, so even a beginner can figure it out. In fact, there is a complete synchronization of the car system with the iPhone or iPad.

Not all apps may work with CarPlay. The developers have tried to maintain a high level of security. The idea behind Apple Car Play, like all other in-car entertainment and information systems, is to keep distractions to a minimum. At least that's what all the techs say.

If you've fallen in love with Siri and can't live without her voice, Apple CarPlay will make your dreams come true. Siri will talk to you directly through the car interface. She checks your calendar and email and tells you about scheduled business meetings while you're on the move. She will read your text messages and give you the opportunity to dictate your answer, which she will then send to the addressee. It will also help you make hands-free calls.

Unfortunately, the system does not allow you to use "Google Maps" for navigation. You will need to use Apple Maps with CarPlay. The developers promise that you will like it, but in fact, everything is not so smooth.

When Apple unveiled CarPlay at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, the company confirmed that it was partnering with a dozen manufacturers, including Ferrari, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo. That's a pretty big price range, so even if you can't afford a Ferrari, you can probably find a CarPlay-equipped car that you can actually afford.

How to properly use your iPhone in a car or everything you need to know about CarPlay. The smartphone is one of the most popular modern devices. It is designed not only for talking, but also for listening to music or using GPS navigation. This case has not escaped the attention of car manufacturers, which are increasingly providing the opportunity to integrate a phone with a radio into a car.

Integration means that by connecting the phone to the car, we will see on the screen the selected applications that we use daily. In addition to navigation, it can be news, movies, photos and programs. The type of application depends on which phone you are using. In addition, it is highly dependent on the connection standard: Android Auto, Bosch mySPIN, Ford AppLink, CarPlay, MirrorLink or MHL. We will review the most popular system - CarPlay.

The solution, developed by Apple and introduced to the market 5 years ago, only works with American branded phones. In most vehicles, it works over a traditional USB connection. Starting with the new BMW 5 Series, CarPlay will also be available wirelessly. You don't need to use a USB cable to see phone apps on the radio screen.

How do I check if my phone is compatible with CarPlay?

CarPlay mode is only available on some iPhones. It is available in the following models: 5, 5C, 5S, 6, S Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, SE, 7 and 7 Plus. This feature is not available for iPad and iPod Touch. CarPlay is installed by default on any compatible iPhone and requires no additional software.

How do I check if my car radio is compatible with CarPlay?

The solution is only available on multimedia radios with a large color screen, on which, for example, you can display a map of the navigation system. Compatible radios are usually not marked with the CarPlay logo symbol. So to make sure your car's head unit works with the iPhone, you can use the car manufacturer's website and look for the bookmark on factory-installed phone compatibility. Although on some vehicles (for example, Volvo XC90) CarPlay mode is available only after updating the radio firmware, which requires a visit to the station.

How to set up a smartphone for CarPlay?

In your phone's general settings, select the CarPlay option. For proper operation, you must activate the Siri voice assistant function (also in the general settings of the smartphone). Please note that CarPlay may not work properly on some vehicles if you set your phone to a language other than English (United States).

Apps that run in CarPlay mode can be downloaded from the AppStore and installed automatically. Unfortunately, program availability varies by country. Therefore, their use in the Russian market is less than in the USA or Germany.

How to connect phone to autoradio?

Both devices are connected via USB cable. But on some vehicles equipped with multiple USB ports (for example, BMW, Opel), only one of them is designed for connection in CarPlay mode. Unless specifically stated, you need to check the correctness in the manual. When connecting your phone, make sure the screen is unlocked. Otherwise, the CarPlay function will not turn on.

To use wireless CarPlay, you need to turn on the Bluetooth function on your phone and then activate voice control in the car.

How does CarPlay work?

The main CarPlay menu that appears on the screen at startup is the default programs chosen by Apple. The icons are large and clearly marked, making it much easier to use. The entire user interface is designed for voice control, which requires knowledge of the English language. This is especially true for Apple Maps, where manual address entry was hidden from the user. Unfortunately, the program does not recognize the Russian names of streets and cities that are pronounced by voice. Thus, it remains to spend time entering the target manually. In this regard, Apple Maps is certainly an inconvenient navigation program. In addition, Apple Maps also does not have a warning about police cameras and other problems.

In terms of stability, CarPlay scores very highly. The program does not freeze or slow down. None of the tested vehicles experienced the same issues that often happened with Mirror Link or Android Auto. Phone mode also works well - no one complained about the quality of voice and sound.

Apple CarPlay also works for listening to music, podcasts or Internet radio. The sound quality is very good, and finding recordings is intuitive (you can use the recordings online and store them on your iPhone). Unfortunately, the choice of programs is very limited, in this respect Apple continues to give way to Google.

Pros and cons of the program

Disadvantages of Apple CarPlay

  • Inconvenient manual entry of the navigation address
  • Bad Apple Maps Navigation Program
  • Limited number of applications
  • The high cost of buying new phones

Benefits of Apple CarPlay

  • Stable performance in CarPlay mode
  • Convenient menu with a list of applications
  • Large selection of programs for listening to music
  • Voice control with Siri
