Reception of a digital TV signal to a terrestrial antenna. How to set up digital television: working with a set-top box and antenna

Automatic and manual tuning of digital DVB-T2 channels can be done independently, for this it is not necessary to seek help from specialists.

How to set up DVB-T2 on TV? The tuning process is suitable for almost all receiver models. The design of windows, the names of buttons and menu sections may vary, but the general algorithm is roughly the same for everyone.

A device that supports the DVB-T2 standard can be connected to digital television and set up is not at all difficult. To do this, just insert the cable into the appropriate connector, and perform some simple manipulations to configure the channels. If you are using an outdated TV model that does not support this type of signal reception, you will need to purchase a special set-top box.

The TV must have a dedicated antenna input, as well as a cinch connector and an input with video output (scart). If instead of a SCART connector your TV has an HDMI input, then this is a better option.

If you can make a double connection - both through the "tulip" and through HDMI, then you can switch from one cable to another. The best way to watch it is via HDMI. in this case, a higher quality image is obtained.

The distance to the transmitting station (tower) matters. Most often, to effectively tune the TV, it is recommended to install an outdoor antenna with an amplifier, and in city houses on the 4th-5th floor you can use an antenna with a "mustache" or in the form of a frame without an amplifier, but with an option on the TV set-top box "signal amplification".

A receiver is a device designed to receive a signal and transmit it to a TV. The signal source can be a satellite dish, antenna, internet. Connecting a digital set-top box to a TV can be done either directly or through a DVD or through a monitor. But in this case, you may need a special adapter.

How to connect to a TV and set up a receiver (digital receiver)

  1. Take the device out of the box and remove the protective film from it. The film must be removed without fail, otherwise the device will constantly overheat.
  2. Cut off the protective sheath about 1.5 cm from the end of the TB cable (at both ends). The stripping of the sheath must be done very carefully so as not to damage the shielding film that protects the center conductor.
  3. Carefully peel back the shiny protective film and screw the “F” connectors to the wires.
  4. Connect the cable to the TV and set-top box.
  5. Insert a bundle of wires "tulip" into the connectors of the TV and set-top boxes.
  6. Connect the antenna to the TV. The antenna should be installed on the outside wall of the house or on the balcony. After that, you need to go to the actual setting.

To configure the DVB-T2 set-top box, you need to click on the "Menu" on the control panel, and then go to the settings. If the country is not specified by default, you must select it. You also need to select a region, language, image format, search mode.

Then select the signal standard. DTV-T / T2 is installed by default - these are analog and digital television. If this setting is not changed, the TV will search for both channels.

The program will offer to choose automatic or manual configuration. It is necessary to select automatic and click on the "OK" button.

After that, the TV itself will search for all available paid and free channels. At the end of the search, you must click on the "Save" button.

If “DVB-T / T2” is set in the “Search mode” item, then the device will independently find all those channels that are available in your region. But this is possible only if you have already installed a working antenna, which is directed towards the transmitter.

DVB-T2 digital terrestrial television channels

If you bought a TV, antenna and set-top box just now, then when you open the welcome window, you must press the "Menu" button on the control panel. Next: "Configuring DVB-T" -> "Channel search" -> "Search mode". Here you can both find the channels themselves and set the frequency.

To simplify the search process, you can first go to a special site with information to find out at what frequencies the channels are broadcast in your city.

If the antenna is pointing correctly, then after a few seconds the "Signal strength" and "Signal quality" scales will be filled. If the level is good, then you need to click on "Search", and the device will perform the adjustment itself.

If you do not know the correct direction of the antenna, you can turn it very slowly and smoothly. In this case, one must carefully look at the scales of intensity and quality. Once these scales are full, then fix the antenna in this position and search.

This is one of the easiest ways to set up your digital TV yourself. If automatic tuning turned out to be ineffective - the set-top box found few channels (or even did not find them at all), then you need to use manual tuning.

To do this, you need to delete all those channels that were found earlier. After that, select the manual search mode in the same way. A window will appear on the screen. In it you need to set the frequency on which all channels in your city are broadcast. You can find out the frequency on the Internet or from your service provider.

After the channels of the first multiplex are found, you need to find out the frequency for the second multiplex, and start manual search again. Many channels can be found this way.

Signal quality check

To make sure everything is done correctly, you need to find the "INFO" button on the receiver. (In some models, this button has a different name. To determine which button is designed to check the signal quality, you need to look at the instructions.) Press this button 3 times, as a result of which a window with information about the signal quality, number should appear on the screen channel, frequency and encoding. If the first two parameters are more than 60%, then this means that the signal level is acceptable.

If the signal is of poor quality (it constantly changes its level), and shows 30% of the full, then the image quality will be very poor. In such cases, you must either raise the antenna higher, or install it in a different place, or just amplify the signal.

If the TV can receive several multiplexes, you need to check the signal quality on each of them, because they work with different transmitters. It may well be that the signal will be good in one multiplex, but not in the other.

If you have not yet purchased an antenna, then in the article "Antennas for digital TV" you can read recommendations for its selection. After purchasing the antenna, you need to install it correctly in order to maximize the received signal level. First, we need to know what frequencies are broadcasting digital channels in your region.

Determination of frequencies using geoservice

The frequencies at which digital channels are broadcast in Russia may differ even within the same province. In order to find out the frequency of broadcasting at a specific location, you can use a special interactive map. Find your location using the search and click on the green icon for the nearest TV tower. In the figure on the left, the frequency characteristics of the transmitter are circled in red. TVK 27 means that broadcasting is on the 27 frequency channel, it corresponds to the frequency of 522 MHz. This is information about the RTRS-1 package, that is, these are the first 10 main federal channels. Below, the characteristics of the RTRS-2 package are indicated in a similar way. We will use these parameters to tune the antenna. Please note that the RTRS-2 package is not broadcast from all transmitting TV towers. Therefore, if you want to watch all 20 channels, try to find a transmitting point nearby, in which both multiplexes have the "Broadcasting" status. Keep in mind that transmitters in large cities are much more powerful than peripheral ones and, therefore, have a longer range.

Determining the direction and aligning the antenna

So, with the help of the interactive map, you can find out which way to point the antenna. If the antenna is indoor, then it is better to install it on the windowsill and direct it in the right direction. If you have plastic windows, the antenna should be raised above the level of the window profile. It is better to first check the external antenna "on hand" before fixing it completely.

To configure the antenna, connect it to a digital set-top box or TV and enter the manual search mode through the menu. Manual search is available in all set-top boxes, but may not be available in some TV models. In the manual search mode, you should enter the frequency channel that you learned using the geoservice. In most cases, when you select a channel, the broadcast frequency corresponding to that channel, as well as the strength (strength) and signal quality scales will also be displayed. In some STBs, only the signal quality is displayed. Further, focusing on the "quality" scale, you need to find the position and direction of the antenna, at which the value of this scale will be maximum. A quality level of less than 50% or intermittent signal dropout indicates poor reception.

To receive both multiplexes, the procedure must be repeated on both frequency channels. Having achieved a stable value of the signal quality, you can fix the external antenna or leave the indoor antenna alone.

Should I raise an outdoor antenna on a long mast? If you have managed to achieve good signal quality even at low altitudes, it makes no sense to raise the antenna to a great height. The higher, the better, but at the same time there is more cable, difficulties with antenna maintenance and just extra time, money and inconvenience.

Digital TV connection in Russia is in full swing. As with the transition from black and white TV to color, the transition from analogue to digital broadcasting is another step towards progress. It is now becoming a standard rather than a luxury for the elite.

The 20 digital channels, now available for free, bring viewers the best picture quality, crisp sound and an unparalleled experience. But, first, to watch the "numbers" on their TV, many residents of our country will have to buy additional equipment. Let's delve into the nuances.

General information

In practice, the question is "how to connect digital television?" comes down to a one-time purchase and installation of special equipment that will demonstrate modern HD signal quality.

TsETV channels are broadcast in packages - so-called multiplexes. Currently, the process of introducing digital TV in Russia includes broadcasting two multiplexes, each with 10 channels. All 20 broadcast programs can be viewed free of charge.

What is digital television

Today, there is hardly a family where they have not heard about what digital television is. And surely many can't wait to connect it.

Digital television is another television technology, a new way of transmitting TV signals that not only provides better picture and sound quality, but also offers a wider range of programs and functions (for example, analog TV cannot receive HD programs).

The idea behind digital TV broadcasting is quite simple: the image and sound are transmitted over radio waves in the form of a digital audio-video stream, similar to what comes to our computer from the Internet when we watch a video on YouTube.

In addition, thanks to the digital algorithm, it becomes possible to send more than ten times more television and radio programs than traditional analog TV. Additional services are also available for digital viewing, such as an electronic program navigator on the TV screen, as well as video on demand or interactive TV.

The main advantages of digital television are: high sound and image quality, the ability to watch HD programs. Digital television allows you to select different language versions of the same program, subtitles, as well as block selected channels (the so-called parental control).

From the current standard known as standard definition TV, digital is distinguished by its higher resolution: the image on the TV screen is represented by dots (the so-called pixels) - the more there are, the more detailed and better the screen picture. The number of such points is called the resolution.

What you need to connect digital television

In order to connect to digital TV and take full advantage of its benefits, you need to invest in a few essential devices and accessories. If you have not just bought a TV with a built-in digital tuner at home and you do not live next to a TV tower, then most likely you will have to buy a tuner or a new antenna, and possibly both. To make it all work in one chain, you need different kinds of cables, thanks to which you connect the equipment.

What is the right way to approach this issue? If you live in a high-rise building and you have a collective antenna, then you should find out: is the house connected to digital television? Ask your neighbors, perhaps they already receive a digital, therefore, your collective antenna is quite suitable for digital reception. All you have to do is buy a receiver and set up your home TV network.

Antenna

If you live not far from the transmitter, then a small indoor decimeter antenna or the antenna you already have will be enough to receive T2 television. If your settlement is located far from the tower, then it is better to change the wave receiver by choosing a simple directional model. In addition, DVB-T2 reception requires proper antenna placement.

Amplifier

When choosing an antenna, you will be faced with the question of the need to amplify the signal. If you have a weak analog signal, and you are using an antenna with an amplifier, then most likely you will need it to receive "digital". With significant losses in reception quality, a good amplifier is worth its weight in gold, especially if the distance from the transmitter is quite large.

Antennas with powerful broadband amplifiers can enhance the reception of not only the T2 band, but also all radio waves with similar frequencies, which can prevent decoding of the desired signal. Don't use an amplifier unnecessarily. In many cases, it can do more harm than help.

Currently, amplifiers with a 12 V power supply are often used. However, according to the new DVB-T2 standard, new models of digital receivers provide 5 V for the antenna amplifier. Therefore, in active type antennas intended for T2, the amplifiers operate at 5 V directly from the tuner. It is a convenient and economical solution as it eliminates the additional power supply. the amplifier is powered only when the tuner is on.

Receiver

A digital receiver is a decoding device that enables digital television service. Receivers or decoders are usually easy to use and designed with user convenience in mind. The receiver is controlled by a remote control, but has basic buttons on the front of the cabinet.

The receiver is compatible with most TVs. The TV must be equipped with a Euro or Video IN socket. However, in order to receive digital signal quality, the TV receiver must be adapted to support HD modes and equipped with HDMI or component connection. Otherwise, programs that are broadcast in high definition will appear in analog quality.

Cables

A digital set-top box can be connected to almost any TV: older TVs have a typical Scart jack for this, and later, flat-panel TVs use an HDMI jack. Accordingly, you will need cables with the necessary connectors.

To get an on-screen picture in HD quality, the TV must be connected to a digital set-top box via an HDMI cable. When connected via a European connector (Scart), the resulting image will have analog quality. The HDMI cable may not be included in the set-top box, the customer buys it by himself.

The antenna with the DVB-T2 receiver is connected with a coaxial (coaxial) cable, which you can find in any radio store, through the RF-In or RF input or RFIN connector. The end of this antenna cable must have a well-secured antenna plug.

How to connect digital terrestrial television to a TV

In the case of older television sets, a dedicated receiver is required to connect digital television to the television. In the latest TVs, it is an integral part of the device, which will allow you to receive "digital" without a set-top box. When buying a TV with a built-in decoder, it is important to check if it works in the MPEG-4 standard in force in Russia.

Digital signal reception methods

Digital channels can be received in several ways. The first way is to connect digital television through a common antenna installed in your house or entrance. Also, residents of residential areas can receive programs in digital quality via cable TV. This service is provided by regional providers.

Private homeowners can connect digital TV through a conventional antenna, the model of which corresponds to decimeter reception.

What channels are available for viewing

As already mentioned, T2 broadcasting includes 20 free channels. Cable providers that provide digital can offer you more with your chosen package. But these will be paid digital television channels.

The question of the third multiplex is in the air, because the existing infrastructure of digital broadcasting in the Russian Federation is designed for only two multiplexes: there are not enough frequencies, the volume of analogue broadcasting is still large. It is assumed that the current 2018 will be decisive in the situation with the reduction of analogue broadcasting and the integration of the third package of digital channels.

Antenna selection and installation

Having decided to independently connect to digital television, you will come close to choosing an antenna. Already at the very beginning, you should understand that there is no single universal model that can catch a signal in any, even the most difficult conditions. It all depends on your location.

The use of an indoor antenna is attractive, but unfortunately, in many cases, its power is insufficient. This is due to the interference that will inevitably appear in a situation when you walk around the apartment or when cars will often pass near your house. Even with a very strong built-in amplifier, “clean” channel reception will be problematic, because any obstacle dampens the waves. The indoor wave receiver is "shown" only at a short distance from the transmitter or in an ideal location (for example, the windows are directed directly at the repeater).

An external signal receiver is a better option than an indoor one, because UHF waves do not penetrate walls without loss of quality. An external antenna provides sufficient signal strength. Only active or passive?

The answer to this question is the distance between the TV and the DVB-T2 wave receiver. In most cases, the passive model, which does not have additional amplification, is sufficient, since the cable length is often short. In this case, the amplifier is an extra expense. The amplifier is already integrated into the active antenna at the factory.

How to locate a TV tower

You can find the closest TV tower to your locality with the help of. By placing the name of your settlement in the search line, you can estimate the distance and direction to the nearest broadcaster, and the main parameters of its broadcasting.

Zone of confident reception

Confident reception from a transmitter is when the quality of its broadcast is maintained at a high level, regardless of:

  • from weather conditions
  • from the activity of the sun
  • time of year and day
  • temperature and humidity, etc.

The coverage area is the line-of-sight coverage from the broadcast antenna to the place where the receiving antenna is installed. An interactive digital TV connection map reflects the broadcasting area of each TV tower, either under construction or operating, for each of the two multiplexes.

Area remote from the TV tower

The problematic of long-range reception of a digital TV signal is its low level due to the considerable distance between the transmitter and the receiver due to the fact that outside the zone of reliable reception of radio waves fall into shading by the earth's surface, the so-called penumbra zone. Officially, to solve this problem, the permissible distances between the towers have been adopted. However, digital reception at the edge of the transmitter's coverage area will be hampered by interference due to weather conditions, which can appear as fading on the screen.

For long-range reception of digital channels, antennas are characteristic, which are distinguished by their large dimensions and complicated design. The task of remote users (which is often solved only experimentally) is to select an antenna design with a high gain and, at the same time, with the smallest possible dimensions. Directed models are usually the solution.

Antenna and TV Tuning

To start watching DVB-T2, you need to connect all the necessary cables, and only after that you should connect the equipment to the mains. The antenna should be installed towards the nearest TV tower.

Connection process

Installing the decoder is as easy as operating it, takes about half an hour and is done according to the instructions that come with the device or are displayed on the screen. When you turn on the device for the first time, the initial window of the installation assistant - "Autoinstall" appears, in which you can easily go to the most important settings. The labeled keys on the remote take you step by step through the installation instructions.

Customization

After you set the antenna in the desired position, and make sure that all the cables are connected correctly, you can connect the TV and set-top box to the network and start setting up. Using a special button on the receiver's remote control, call up "Menu" and select "Settings".

Autosearch

Select the Auto Search option and wait for the scan to finish. If you were unable to tune the channels using automatic search, this means that the set-top box is not receiving a signal from the antenna. Reposition the antenna and run auto scan again. Check different antenna positions and search the channel until the TV shows the channels of the desired multiplex.

Manual mode

In some cases, it becomes necessary to manually search for channels. In the STB menu select "manual search" (this option may also be called: "manual scan"). A list will appear on the screen where you need to manually enter the broadcast data of the nearest transmitter and confirm the search. The correct result is 20 free Russian channels in HD quality.

Digital television is becoming more and more popular every year, and this is not surprising. Unlike analog broadcasting, the digital signal ensures the transmission of a high-quality picture. Moreover, it is thanks to digital television that you can enjoy broadcasting a television signal in high definition, including HD, Full HD and even 4K.

It must be admitted that analog television is definitely the past, so everyone who has modern TV models should look closely at digital broadcasting of a television signal.

Digital TV these days

I would like to say that now most people still prefer cable television. With its help, you can also get a high-quality picture, but there is a subscription fee, which, unfortunately, is gradually increasing.

In turn, digital television can be an excellent replacement for cable and analogue. Below you can see the advantages of such a solution:

  • Is free. Most often, broadcasting occurs from the very television towers that are used to transmit an analog signal. Accordingly, you will not need to pay for the use of digital television.
  • Signal quality. With stable operation of the receiver, the picture and sound quality will be just perfect. Unfortunately, analog television shows interference with any external and internal factors.
  • Customization. The process of setting up digital channels is more than simple, any person can definitely cope with this matter.

How to connect digital television - choosing a receiver

To use digital television, you need to purchase a digital television signal receiver. You will need a device that supports the DVB-T2 standard. By the way, many modern televisions available for sale already have a built-in digital television module, so the task can be significantly simplified.

As for the capabilities of a digital receiver, it all depends directly on the price range.

The cheapest options for these products are digital TV receivers without additional functions. More expensive models have a certain amount of memory and support the use of flash drives. In this regard, a certain functionality is added. For example, the ability to record streaming to a USB flash drive.

How to connect digital television - the need for an antenna

How to connect digital television - setting up the receiver

  • After the standard connection of the receiver to the TV (via RCA connectors), you must also make the antenna connections. If it was previously connected to the TV, it must be reconnected to the receiver, since the TV will perform the function of exclusively outputting the signal, and the receiver takes care of everything else, including receiving digital information.
  • Next, the receiver is turned on, as well as the TV, which is transferred to the mode of broadcasting information from an external device.
  • After turning on the receiver, you need to move to the settings menu, where there is a "Channel search" item. If the signal level is sufficient, then literally in 3-4 minutes all digital channels distributed over various multiplexes will be found. Along with digital channels, a TV program will be uploaded, as well as announcements from the channels themselves.
  • Gradually, the number of channels available in certain multiplexes may increase, and in order to add them to the list, you must again select “Channel search” in the receiver settings.
