Stair lighting controller. Smart backlight: scheme and steps

This article will be interesting and useful to those who decide to make their home original by decorating the stairs in it with the help of automatic lighting. In this way, you can also increase the level of security, which is important if small children or elderly people live in your house. You can decorate with lighting the stairs of a private house, located both outside and inside.

How does automation work?

Necessary devices for automatic backlighting: controller, motion sensor, light detection sensor (if you wish), cables.

There are sensors that can respond to different types of "irritants", such as voice, clap, movement. You can install them in any convenient place, near the first and last steps. The sensors are connected to the controller - the basis of the whole structure, they inform him of the necessary command, and the controller transmits this information to the switch.

There are also timers with which you can set the desired turn-on time. If someone comes home late, it will be very helpful. It is possible to adjust the lighting, its intensity, smoothness of switching on, brightness, switching on of each individual stage in turn.

It is appropriate to connect a light sensor to save energy. With it, the backlight will automatically turn off or not turn on at all during daylight hours.

It must be installed in places where the change to light and shadow is more distinct, therefore, the command will be given exactly at the right time.

The smart mechanism works like this:

  • When approaching a step, or in direct contact with it, response sensors are triggered, a command is given to the controller, and the stairs are illuminated.
  • After a certain time, the light goes out.
  • In daylight and when passing by the sensors, the light will not light up if the settings are made correctly.
  • Note that if there are pets in the house, the sensors will also respond to them.

This is a very economical option for energy consumption. You can install this type of lighting both in the house and on the street stairs. In the latter version, it is worth considering that the temperature and humidity often change there. The material of the stairs is also important. All these nuances can create difficulties during installation.

For long and spiral staircases, it is appropriate to set up alternate lighting for each step.

The operation of sensors can be carried out from wireless sources, power supply. It is very convenient, fast, economical and safe. There will be no need to install walls, and the problems of double repairs can be avoided. They already provide all the necessary devices, settings are made, there are instructions, their installation does not require special training.

You can also make wiring from the main electrical network. This option will take more time and effort if the owner decides to do it himself. But you will have to spend more money if you hire an electrician.

The advantage of automatic backlighting is that it saves time, because there is no need to look for a switch in the dark. Cost savings come from the fact that the backlight does not work constantly and turns off on its own, it also contributes to additional security for the oldest and youngest family members. And she looks very original.

Lighting types

There are several types of lighting:

  • Lateral. It is mounted on the wall opposite the stairs. You can use separate sconces or lamps with directional lighting. Sometimes it is appropriate to apply railing lighting at the same time.
  • Upper- the main lighting on the ceiling. If there is enough space above the stairs, then a chandelier is perfect, it will cover more space with its light. In the case of a spiral staircase, if there is space, you can use long chandeliers as independent lighting. You can install additional spot LED lamps to the chandelier, and turn them on independently of each other.
  • lower. It looks very nice masked in the steps or between them built-in devices - LED strips and pipes. To install them, you do not need to hammer the walls, the process will take less time.
  • Individual spotlights with grilles can also be placed in the wall opposite the steps. They are also not particularly difficult to install, there is the option of attached and battery-powered products.

  • mixed. The use of several types at the same time is an option for the manifestation of fantasy, but it requires considerable costs. The illumination of steps and railings, the upper chandelier with side or floor lamps is perfectly combined. The main thing here is to choose the harmonious light of the lamps themselves, you should also remember about safety, all steps should be illuminated without distorting the shape.

There are several types of instrument lamps:

  • neon. They have a soft light and do not give shadows, which is very important for safety. They shine for a long time, but are prone to damage.
  • Halogen. Like the previous lamps, they are good for their soft and diffused light, although they are brighter. Devices can burn out quickly, and they are also sensitive to power surges.
  • LED. Often used LED strip. Such light sources are durable, they can also run on batteries, do not heat up, and have different colors.

Today, the stair lamp of the Arduino system is quite popular, which is distinguished by its high quality.

Equipment: types and choice

For illumination, the following lighting devices are used:

  • Spotlights and sconces and chandeliers with directional light. This option is suitable for top and side lighting. Lamps can be both built-in and overhead, powered by batteries. Wall appliances are mounted at the same level from the steps, they must be located at least two meters from the steps.

LED lamps are suitable as light bulbs for greater energy savings.

In these cases, it is not necessary to have a special controller, you can use conventional switches or install a single switch common to all fixtures. When choosing this type of backlight, remote control of lighting using a remote control is relevant.

To install these lighting devices, it is necessary to distribute the wiring from the central network along the ceiling and walls to the place where the device is attached, hide the wires in the walls, boxes. Naturally, you need to open walls or ceilings, build in a switch, sometimes you have to run cables through the attic.

  • Fiber optics, LED strips and pipes have bright light and more space coverage. They are flexible and durable, the tapes are resistant to mechanical damage, they are economical and easy to use. You can use separate LED lamps with grilles, they are also economical and not difficult to install. But the effect of them is simply mesmerizing. There are options for multi-colored ribbons.

This option is suitable for bottom lighting, lighting between stairs or built into the steps at the edge of the border. You can glue tapes on the railing for additional lighting.

The choice of equipment depends on the place of its intended installation, the design of the stairs and the premises, the preferences of the owners and their financial capabilities.

The easiest way will be to install tapes with LEDs. This does not require dismantling the walls and buying a lot of tools. Therefore, less money can be spent. The LEDs have an adhesive base, for greater reliability of the design, double-sided tape or screws are used. When choosing this type of highlighting, remember that the entire staircase and each step should be illuminated without distorting the shapes.

The choice of fixtures and lighting depends on the material and type of the staircase itself. The following are common types of raw materials for stair structures:

  • wooden stairs. The risk of their ignition is taken into account, they require lighting devices, the lamps of which should not heat up much, and good insulation is also needed. The surface itself should be treated with materials to increase resistance to temperature changes. You can use both a tape and luminaires with a grate built into the steps or a wall.
  • metal. It should be noted that the metal conducts current well, the wiring must be carefully insulated. You can use overhead lights. In this case, it is better to choose lamps or sconces on the walls or ceiling.
  • Spiral stairs. They are most often marked with a tape, it is flexible and durable and easily takes the desired shape. It looks good on the steps themselves, and is also glued to the railing or wall. If there is enough space, a long pendant chandelier is installed, the body of which descends and illuminates the entire span.

  • Glass stairs. An LED strip is suitable here, the light will give the design weightlessness and originality. You can get the effect of a glow from the inside. And if the design and construction allows, it is possible to mount spotlights under the stairs, the necessary glow of all steps is created, and the devices are protected from damage.
  • Concrete. Sconces or lamps are built into the wall, or a tape with aluminum profiles is mounted.

Preparation: planning

Planning will take a little time, the main thing is to decide on the scheme and installation location of the selected equipment, the required length of cables, the location and method of masking the wiring. Before starting work, you need to stock up on everything you need for installation.

To embed a chandelier or lamp, special tools are needed: a drill, pliers, electrical tape, screwdrivers. Removing the cable yourself, installing wiring, connecting switches is a long and even dangerous job for beginners.

Electrical work requires great care. Necessary:

  • work only when the main power supply is turned off;
  • correctly select the cross-sections for the wires;
  • isolate all contacts;
  • check polarity.

With insufficient knowledge of the electrical network and lack of practice, it is better to leave the work to specialists.

If you choose an LED strip, you need to buy a tool kit consisting of a screw driver, a drill, self-tapping screws. If your staircase does not have plumb lines, all this will come in handy for installing the tape. You will also need clamps or cable channels. Neon pipes of the required dimensions and boxes as an additional level of protection against moisture must also be installed as additional features.

With your own hands, you can easily mount the LED strip for lighting, following the diagram:

  • First you need to take measurements and cut off the required amount of tape, the cut lines are indicated.
  • Next, click on both sides of the locking device. If you solder the contacts, they can last longer, but this procedure will take additional time.
  • Degrease the surface and attach tapes or insert them into the grooves of the profile for additional protection. The wires are led behind the steps or into the holes between the wall and the stairs. If the design allows, then the cable channels simply run along the stairs.
  • Install motion sensors near the top and bottom steps of the stairs.
  • The wiring from the sensors must be hidden behind the steps or led into the holes in the wall, you can run it in boxes along the walls.
  • Cables are fixed with clamps or cable channels.
  • The system control box must be attached in a convenient location.
  • The wires should be connected to the switch and connect everything to the controller, which will control all actions. It needs to be set up with a computer.
  • After that, a readiness check is carried out.

Automatic with a motion sensor is quite convenient and looks stylish. To go up the stairs at night, you need to turn on the light, and this may disturb the rest of the household.

The backlight will look aesthetically pleasing. Unlike the lighting we are used to, the energy consumption for such lighting is small. Lighting with a motion sensor is safe even if there are children in the house. Automatic lighting will give individuality to the house and emphasize the taste of the owners.

Device elements

In our time, lamps with a motion sensor are gaining more and more popularity.

In the case of staircase lighting, the best option would be to give preference to manufacturers of a series of boards and controllers Arduino (Arduino) or their analogues.

The automatic staircase lighting device with a motion sensor consists of a control controller with diode strips.

The controller includes:

  • power unit;
  • microcontroller;
  • two motion sensors;
  • dusk sensor.

Note: the power supply must be powerful enough to power both the LED strips and the device.

Motion sensors are designed for installation in the area of the first and last steps. They can be either infrared or ultrasonic. It sends a signal to the device when a person approaches it.

The twilight sensor is designed to exclude the operation of the device during daylight hours or with sufficient artificial lighting of the stairs.

Device management

The control of a conventional device is carried out from the control panel. The control panel contains:

  • indication elements showing the inclusion of the device itself;
  • activation of one of the two motion sensors;
  • dusk sensor indicator.

Management is carried out using buttons. The right two buttons are the buttons to increase or decrease the value of the controlled parameter. The left two buttons are for controlling the brightness of the light, the brightness of the backlight. When the left buttons are pressed simultaneously, the staircase lighting delay is adjusted until it is turned off.

If you prefer the Arduino device, then it works with the help of a computer program that can either be downloaded to a computer or directly connected to a computer and installed.

When illuminated with the Arduino, the upper and lower rungs glow. They will glow almost all night, so that a person can navigate in the dark where the step is and go to this light.

The twilight and motion sensor are connected to the terminals. There is a separate terminal for each sensor. When the dusk sensor is blocked by a resistor, the device considers that dusk has come.

How the device works

If a person approaches from the top of the stairs, then the upper sensor will work in this case. The light on the stairs will spread in a wave from top to bottom.
Next, the backlight will glow for a while for the person to walk up the stairs. After the set delay time has elapsed, the staircase will also smoothly fade out in a wave from top to bottom.

If a person approaches from below, the lower sensor will work, and the device will give a light wave from the bottom from the first to the last step. There will also be a delay in lighting time and the light will gradually go out in the same direction in which it turned on.

Equipping the stairs with lighting is a convenient solution even in the traditional version, when the lighting devices are activated using two switches, one of which is installed at the beginning of the stairs and the other at the end. However, only by combining the backlight with motion sensors, you will get smart, most comfortable staircase lighting.

Light source options

  • - The light source is held under the overhangs of the steps, thereby providing uniform and bright illumination of each step. The most economical method;

  • LED lamp. The light source is mounted directly into the wall above each step. This lighting system is additionally equipped with special gratings that redirect the light flux. Expensive lighting that requires a rather complicated installation.

Choosing lighting fixtures

An LED strip is a strip made of a polymeric elastic material, equipped with a conductive thin coating, to which LEDs are attached at a certain interval, emitting a bright, uniform light when voltage is applied.

If we talk about the type and configuration of diodes, then the modelsSMD 3528enough to provide comfortable illumination of the stairs in the dark. For color illumination, you need to select an RGB strip, and you will also have to install an additional controller to control the color change.

Attention! Choose LED strips that have an excellent level of waterproofing so that water does not get on the conductive elements during mopping.

Basically, the tapes are attached to the steps with a self-adhesive layer. However, by the time the tape is installed, the glue often dries up. You can strengthen the fastening by fixing the lighting device on a construction 2-sided adhesive tape.

It is necessary to mount the LED strip in the groove, which, as a rule, is made under the step. If there is no such groove, it is necessary to attach a U-shaped aluminum profile to the bottom of the step overhang, into which the tape will be glued. This is done so that the light from the device does not scatter.

Luminaires for equipping stairs with illumination differ significantly from LED strips. They have a housing and are designed to mount lighting directly into the thickness of the wall. Choose appliances that have a cylindrical base, because traditional socket boxes can be used to install them. Most often, LED lamps go on sale in kits in which they are combined with one controller.

Attention! When choosing a backlight, pay special attention to the design of the protective grille. So that the light does not blind the eyes, its flow must be directed. A great option when the reflective casing is adjustable.

Controls

To trigger a sensor that turns on light sources, we need:

Arduino microcontroller

    • microcontroller, which is the core of the system. The most successful option today is Arduino (lighting for the stairs). This system provides elementary programming by working with a computer.
    • LED driver improves work efficiency. An excellent option is the 74HC595 chip;
    • two motion sensors (touch). You can choose both ultrasonic and infrared models;
  • a light sensor operating on a phototransistor is necessary for the system to respond to movement only in the dark.

Stair lighting equipment

Self-equipping stairs with lighting begins with the assembly of the system responsible for turning the light off and on:

    • a microcontroller is installed on the printed circuit board, for example, Arduino, with parallel attachment of circuits;
    • the board is locked in a plastic case;

      Attention! You need a reliable, strong case, which can also provide free access to the board for its further adjustment or repair.

    • the microcontroller is connected to a computer, then firmware is loaded onto it, which will later control the system;
  • connectors necessary for connecting power supplies and LEDs are fixed on the surface of the case. Only after that they can be connected to the controller contacts.

Installation of light sources

The LED strip simply needs to be glued to the surface of the stairs.

If you chose LED strips:

    • according to the markup, we cut off a fragment of the required length with scissors;
    • we fix one end with a connector and attach two wires to it;
  • the place where you will glue the tape must be degreased.

For degreasing, you should not buy expensive liquids. Plain acetone or similar solvents may be used.

    • glue the tape to the step;
  • wires must be brought under the stairs, for this you can use small holes in the riser.

Placement of LED lamps in the frame of the stairs

If you decide to use LED lamps as a light source:

    • we make holes in the wall for mounting the fixture housing, as well as strobes that are necessary for wiring;
    • we install socket boxes in the holes obtained and mount lamps in them, which must be fixed with clamping screws;
  • we lay the wires and seal the strobes with cement mortar.

Attention! Wires are best laid in special plastic cable channels.

Combining the system together

In order for the lighting system with a motion sensor to work smoothly, it is necessary to combine all its components together:

    • we mount and set up a photocell, the wires from which we wind up under the stairs;
    • we fix the power supply and the case in which the control circuit is hidden;
    • collect all the wires under the stairs into a bundle, fasten them with plastic clamps and lay them in a plastic cable channel, which is then fixed under the stairs along the wall;
  • connect wires to the controller.

Using the above installation diagram for equipping stairs with motion sensor lighting, you can decorate your home and make it more functional. In addition, the use of LED light sources is considered economical due to low power consumption.

When there is a staircase in a country house, there is also fear, fear for oneself and for one's children, who may stumble and fall in the dark.

Most owners of private houses have already faced such a problem. However, thanks to modern technologies, a “bright” solution to this issue has appeared - automatic illumination of the stairs.

A staircase structure with wooden railings must be reliable and safe, and automatic lighting can bring not only aesthetics, but also make movement safer.

The actual issue of additional lighting of the staircase structure is also important when there is not enough natural light. Especially when it comes to steps leading to dark rooms. In addition, the span between tiers is not always safe enough. And cozy lighting will perfectly complement the interior of the home and bring a touch of charm. Stepping on such a ladder, you can forget about fears and discomfort, as it was in the dark.

The principle of operation of lighting for stairs

Smart backlight is sensitive to the movements of a person moving up the stairs. It turns on and off very smoothly.

By adjusting the lighting, you can:

  • set the required turn-on speed, as well as set the time for the activated backlight for ;
  • make it so that the backlight turns on at all steps simultaneously when a person approaches the flight of stairs, and also set the mode for turning on individual sections in turn;
  • set the “waiting” mode for a certain number of steps (for example, in this mode, only the extreme steps can be highlighted so that in the dark a person can figure out which step to start a step from).

Set of automatic illumination of stairs.

In addition, you can use non-primary illumination of the extreme steps, with which the staircase will be illuminated in complete darkness. This mode assumes that the brightness level of the light will be used only by 10%.

It is possible that you will be interested in information on how to choose siding for your home, which you can read about.

The device can be placed in an appropriate place convenient for operation. Two motion sensors, as a rule, are installed on the outer steps, which react to a moving object. When approached, they turn on, illuminating the entire staircase. The light also goes out automatically after a certain time after the movement stops, which can also be configured.

You can use this lighting for indoor and outdoor stairs. When installing lighting on an outdoor staircase, it is necessary to take into account changes in temperature conditions, weather changes, and humidity levels. Therefore, it is easier to use automation in the house, since the chance of breakage of appliances increases on the street.

It is more relevant to use smart lighting for long staircases. For long marches, it is appropriate to alternately adjust the light of several steps.

The subtleties of choosing lighting equipment

The most impressive is the light that LED lamps give. In terms of service life, such lamps can last more than ten years with minimal power consumption.

An example of LED lighting.

Compared to incandescent lamps, LEDs consume 20 times less energy. And if we take into account that the inclusion occurs from the movement of the object, then the cost of electricity will be minimal.

However, one should take into account the fact that if there is a pet in the house, then the sensors will respond to them as well.

Installation of lighting devices is very simple. For installation, only basic knowledge in working with electricity will be required. LEDs are powered by 12 volts, so they are safe.

Benefits of auto backlight

In addition to the spectacular appearance and safety of movement, automatic lighting of the stairs has other benefits:

  • there is no need to search for a switch in the darkness;
  • saving energy resources, since the lighting is not used constantly (while in standby mode, the lamps consume little electricity);
  • lighting gives an incomparable and charming look to the stairs.

Installing lighting on the steps involves a small cost, but it can give comfort and benefit the whole family.

Backlight installation: preparatory work

Before you start drilling and laying wires, you need to draw up a general plan for future lighting.

To do this, two questions need to be asked:

  1. Light source.
  2. How will the switch on and off be controlled.

On the first question there are several options for lamps:

  • Light strips (LED). Their installation takes place under the overhangs of the steps. LEDs provide bright and even illumination. The benefits have been mentioned above.
  • LED lamp. Their installation is carried out in the wall along the entire length of the flight of stairs. They are equipped with a special grid so that you can redirect the flow of light. Disadvantages: complicated installation process and high price.
  • Ceiling and wall lamps. They can be used in the most simple staircase designs.

Let's consider the installation of the most acceptable and common backlighting option, indicating individual points that are not obvious to beginners.

Backlight schemes:

  • The simplest scheme looks like this: two switches are installed above and below, which will activate the lighting devices. This scheme allows you to use the backlight only at the right time.
  • A more complex project provides for the automatic switching on and off of light from motion sensors on a “command”. To accomplish this task, you will need a controller that assumes the possibility of programming, has a driver chip and touch sensors.
  • The most complex scheme is the device of sensors on each step. Taking a step activates the sensor and turns on the light on the next step. This option for installing the backlight looks very impressive, but it will take a lot of effort to implement it.

You can read about automatic staircase lighting.

Fixtures for illumination: characteristic

LED strips or recessed lamps are used as fixtures. Let's start with LEDs:

  1. An LED strip is a strip made of a flexible polymer that has conductive insulation. LEDs are placed at certain intervals. When energized, LEDs produce very bright light.
  2. Light tapes can be of two categories: open and protected from moisture. For mounting the backlight, it is better to use tapes with a good level of waterproofing to prevent liquid from entering the conductive components when the floors are washed.
  3. Most models are fastened with a self-adhesive layer. If this quality is lost, you can additionally fix the tape with double-sided tape.
  4. According to the type and structure of LEDs for illumination, the following sample can be used - SDM 3528, which is able to provide convenient movement up the stairs in the dark. However, the SDM 5050 has a brighter light, so it is more suitable for the general light source in the room.

To avoid strong light scattering, you can use an aluminum U-profile, which is attached to the bottom of the step. You can do without a profile, then the backlight is mounted in a groove that is made under the steps.

The difference between LED strips and conventional lamps:

  1. Most luminaires are equipped with a housing that is built into the wall. It is better to buy models that have a cylinder-shaped body, since ordinary socket boxes can be used for their installation.
  2. There are models of lamps with white light on the market, but you can find other colors.
  3. As a rule, the sale of lamps is carried out in a batch of several pieces, which are united by one controller. This kit greatly simplifies the process of installing the lighting control structure.

To ensure the response of touch sensors and the inclusion of lamps or light strips, you must purchase:

  • The microcontroller is the heart of the whole design. Experts recommend using Arduino brand controllers. The technology of these devices is able to provide an easy programming process by connecting to a computer.
  • Diode drivers or similar devices may be used to ensure reliable system operation.
  • To record the movement of objects, two motion sensors with built-in sensors are installed, the operation of which is based on ultrasound or infrared radiation.
  • To turn on the system only at night, it must be connected to a light sensor, which is located on the phototransistor.

To control the entire lighting system, you will need a power supply that runs on a voltage of 12 volts. In addition, wires and other tools will be required to connect all the elements of the circuit.

Do-it-yourself lighting installation

Upon completion of the assembly of the circuit, its verification in test mode, and if it functions properly (you can see how the process of its assembly takes place on the photo reports on the Internet), you can proceed to the most time-consuming work - installing and connecting a light source.

You will also be interested to know about the two-flight stairs that are described.

Installation of light strips is very simple:

  • With scissors along the marking line, a section of the tape of the required length is cut off.
  • A special connector is attached to one of the extreme sections of a piece of tape, two wires are attached to it.
  • The steps on which the tapes will be mounted must be degreased. For this, acetone or any other solvent is used.
  • The protective cover is removed. The LED is applied to the lower base of the step with a self-adhesive side.
  • The wires must be placed under the ladder structure through a small slot in the riser.

Installation of recessed luminaires is a little more complicated. For this:

  • With a puncher, it is necessary to drill holes for the cases in the wall, as well as make ledges into which the wires will be laid.
  • Socket boxes are installed in the prepared holes along with special casings, which are equipped with fixtures.
  • Lamps are installed, the fixation of which is carried out with the help of clamping screws.
  • The wires should be laid in plastic cable ducts, and the ledges should be sealed with a cement mortar.

A similar scheme is used for mounting sensors on the extreme steps of the ladder structure.

The process of assembling the lighting for the stairs

Lighting for a flight of stairs with a motion sensor is almost ready for operation, however, at the testamentary stage, it is necessary to connect all the elements of the system into one.

  • Initially, you need to install and calibrate the photocell. Its purpose is to activate the backlight in the dark. The wires coming from the photocell are led under the stairs.
  • Then there is the fixing of the power supply and the box that controls the entire circuit. The system should be fixed in such an inconspicuous place so that the view of the interior does not deteriorate, but in an accessible place for further maintenance.
  • All wiring from lighting fixtures and sensors must be collected in a bundle, which is pulled together with plastic clamps and placed in a cable channel.
  • The case with wires is placed on the wall under the stairs or on the side of one of the stringers.
  • The wiring is then connected to the required controller connectors.
  • The power supply is connected to the mains. To ensure safety, power-off protective devices may be installed, but this is generally not necessary.

The entire assembled system must be tested in all operating modes. If there is a need, then you can make some corrections to the program, as well as eliminate the detected malfunctions. Then close the control circuit box.

The staircase structure, equipped with lighting according to such a pattern, will become your assistant in the dark, and in daylight nothing will catch your eye. And, besides, the device of LED lighting of the stairs is not a costly undertaking. And don't forget about safety! In order not to slip, be sure to use.

IN STOCK! The controller comes with two crossover sensors and a photoresistor..

26 channel stair controller allows you to organize automatic lighting of your flight of stairs. The main advantage of the controller is the smooth sequential switching on of steps depending on the direction of movement of a person, as well as smooth switching off. Duty illumination of the first steps makes it easy to identify the stairs in the dark without using any external lighting.

The principle of operation of automatic staircase lighting

After a person crosses one of the 2 sensors (which are located at the beginning and at the end of the stairs), the steps are smoothly switched on sequentially. Upon completion of switching on all steps, a timer is activated, which does not allow the backlight to go out for a while (set in the settings). After that, the backlight turns off smoothly. If you continue to cross the sensors while the entire staircase is lit, the timer will count from the beginning, i.e. dumped. If people walk from both ends of the stairs at the same time, the backlight will be fully activated.
