Connecting hard. How do I connect a hard drive to my computer? Hard disk program

Not so long ago I decided to get a hard drive, since Windows 7 takes a lot for backup.
Plus, I still save a lot of things on my computer, buy various training courses, and all this also weighs a lot.
From the entire assortment, the sata hard drive WD was selected, for example of which we will further consider connecting a hard drive, as well as formatting it.

What is the difficulty of connecting

Many have a desire to be frightened, because before there were mistakes remembering which we evaluate how much we cope with the current tasks.
However, if you recall, then we had cases when everything worked out, and we will be guided by them.

In terms of hard drive connection technology, we will consider two options - connecting through an adapter and using a cable.
Since there are no jumpers, the pairing process itself will consist in connecting the data cable and the power cable.
Then we will need to format the hard drive so that it becomes visible in windows.

Connecting an external hard drive

Reasons for connecting a hard drive in an external case:
- if you only need file storage;
- the power supply is low-power, and the hard disk also needs power.

4. We connect the hard drive to the computer in order to load windows and format it using the Disk Management utility.

5. Boot the computer, go to "Control Panel" / "System and Security" / "Administration" / "Computer Management" and select "Disk Management" from the menu.

6. After selecting a new hard disk in the list, create one logical disk anew and format everything in NTFS.

If your external hard drive is not detected, format it as described above or in another way.

7. Turn off the computer, take out the hard drive and assemble it in an external case.
You do not need to install a driver for an external HDD case if you do not have Windows 98.

8. We connect to the computer and check the functionality.

After reading the article, you have enough information to decide which method of connecting the sata HDD you choose, external or internal connection.
You can also choose an external hard drive case with or without a fan, although usually the choice is due to the intensity and duration of the external hard drive use and, of course, the amount available.

For installation work, you will need a simple screwdriver and general knowledge of the simple device of the system unit.

Winchester, HDD, and hard disk are different names for the same storage device. On this drive, all information is stored permanently, it does not disappear after the power is turned off and can be deleted by the user. This is where you drop off your music, TV shows, photographs and valuable documents. If you know how to connect a hard drive to a computer, then even in the event of a serious breakdown of the PC, you will be able to remove the HDD and transfer important data to other devices in just a few minutes.

How do I connect a second hard drive to my computer?

All blocks have several HDD slots, located vertically on top of each other. We mount the hard drive according to the same rules as in the previous instructions. In the standard version, several loops leave the power supply, so the problem of how to connect two hard drives at the same time is easy to solve. Otherwise, you will have to purchase an inexpensive splitter.

Disks from a computer with a size of 3.5 ″ and a height of 25 mm will not fit inside a laptop; for this purpose, HDDs with a size of 2.5 ″ and a height of 9.5 mm are used. To replace or install a new drive, you need to turn the laptop over, disconnect the battery and remove the cover, giving access to the hard drive. Next, we unscrew the fastening screws and we can take out the old disk or go directly to connecting the new drive.

How to connect an additional hard drive to your laptop:

  1. We place the chassis with the hard drive in a niche, connect it by pressing it all the way.
  2. We fix the hard drive to the bottom of the laptop with special screws.
  3. Installing the battery.

How do I connect a second hard drive to my laptop?

The desire to increase the memory of their device arises among many users, but the size of a thin laptop does not allow doing this in a convenient way, as on a personal computer. There are several ways to implement this idea, you need to figure out the accessories and choose the right option. Do not be afraid to make a mistake in which SATA to connect the second hard drive, in most variants the devices are equipped with only one connector for a drive and a connector for a DVD drive.

Options for connecting a second hard drive to a laptop:

  1. In rare models, there is a seat for a second hard drive.
  2. We use SATA-USB, SATA-IDE, IDE-USB adapters. We supply power to the device with an additional cord.
  3. Application of factory containers for HDD, which allow connecting a drive via a USB port. When buying this adapter pocket, you need to know the size of your drive, there are versions for 2.5 "and 3.5".
  4. Purchase ready for your laptop.
  5. Remove the DVD drive and replace it with a second hard drive.

How do I connect an external hard drive to my laptop?

This method of expanding memory has significant advantages, you do not need to disassemble the device and use special adapters, so even beginners can quickly solve the problem of how to connect a hard drive to a laptop. We buy an external drive and get to work. Note that some models are powered from the mains and require a separate power supply unit.

How to connect a hard drive to a mobile computer:

  1. We connect power to the external drive.
  2. We connect the USB cable to the hard drive.
  3. Connect the other end of the USB cable to an available port.
  4. When the indicator lights up, the HDD is ready for operation.
  5. The disk is displayed on the laptop monitor.

The way devices interact with time changes, new formats are constantly emerging, which leads to problems of how to connect a new HDD to a personal computer or laptop. The sizes of ports and connection cables from an old device often do not fit a new hard drive. There are three main types of interface that are actively used on mobile or stationary PCs, it will not be difficult for a modern user to understand them.

SATA computers use reliable 7-pin data bus connectors and 15-pin power connectors. They are reliable and not afraid of multiple connections. When it comes to how many hard drives can be connected to a computer, it all depends on the number of ports on the motherboard. Interface cables to the disk and the motherboard are connected in the same way. There are several versions of SATA with different bandwidths:

  • SATA I - 1.5 Gb / s;
  • SATA II - 3Gb / s;
  • SATA III - 6 Gb / s;

IDE interfaces have been used since the 1980s, and their bandwidth is low by today's standards - up to 133 MB / s. Now they have been replaced everywhere by new versions of high-speed SATA ports. IDE devices are found primarily on budget motherboards and low-end PCs. Due to the fact that users still have a lot of old-style drives, they have to solve a problem with their compatibility. The best option is to connect an IDE hard drive to a new generation ribbon cable without installing additional drivers - to use a modern SATA-IDE adapter.

The easiest way to work with a special external USB drive, which does not require additional accessories. In the case of connecting a standard HDD from a PC or laptop, an adapter is needed. It looks like a box made of a metal or plastic case; when assembled, this device differs little from a standard external hard drive. A 3.5-inch drive is often connected without a box, using a direct adapter cable. If one hard drive is not enough, then the problem of how to connect the HDD to the computer is solved using a docking station for several disks.

Hello to all! Earlier I already wrote an article on how to connect an ide hard drive to the motherboard using a controller. Today I will share with you another great solution for connecting ide device to a new motherboard. Moreover, this solution is inexpensive and versatile enough.

While updating the hardware of one computer, I was faced with a choice: is it worth buying a new optical drive, or you can use the old one, which has an IDE connector. Naturally, the new motherboard does not have this connector, and my proposal not to install a drive at all, the owner of the computer firmly indicated that he uses disks often and with pleasure.

The cost of a new optical drive with a modern SATA connector is not so high - about 600-700 rubles, but then it is not clear what to do with the old device, because it works great. And the money saved is better spent on improving the performance of a new computer.

After surfing the Internet a little, I came across this wonderful thing:

Similar adapters can be ordered from China at ridiculous prices here: aliexpress.com is a proven reliable store with a guarantee, whose services I use quite often.

This is a SATA - IDE adapter and vice versa IDE - SATA adapter. It has a fairly compact size and costs only 200 rubles! Obviously, buying such an adapter is more profitable than buying a new drive.

The best part is that it works both ways. That is, we can connect an old IDE device to a new motherboard, or vice versa, a SATA drive or hard drive can be connected to a motherboard that does not have SATA connectors. And in fact, and in another case, we can significantly save.

In general, connecting a device through such an adapter does not cause any difficulties, but you need to be careful here. The adapter has markings for SATA pins (see right photo above). One SATA connector is used when connecting an IDE device to the motherboard, the other vice versa, if you need to connect a SATA device to an old motherboard.

In addition to various connectors, the controller has a jumper to select the mode:

  • 2-3 IDE mainboard to SATA HDD;
  • 1-2 SATA mainboard to IDE HDD.
Accordingly, by bridging the necessary contacts 2-3 or 1-2, we tell the device what type of connection we need. In any case, just by experimenting with wires and a jumper, you can achieve the desired result, and you can not be afraid that something will burn out (tested on my own experience 🙂).

Connecting an IDE hard drive or drive will look like this:

Having connected an optical drive through such an adapter, I decided to buy myself exactly the same one. Let it lie, I'm sure it will definitely come in handy for such a price.)

Here is such a simple and cheap solution for connecting IDE devices. I hope this article will help many to make the right choice)

P.S. For those who cannot connect a hard drive through an adapter (not detected in the system or in bios), they can try to put jumpers on the IDE drive itself in the master or slave position. Try different options. Everything will definitely work out! (Thanks! For the addition to Alexei Shchukin)

When you need an IDE-SATA adapter

To use outdated PCs, an IDE SATA adapter is increasingly needed, which allows you to connect old hard drives that were not originally designed for the SATA standard to new motherboards.

For businesses and home users, there are still computers in which the hdd is connected via the ATA interface (IDE), developed in 1986. The user may have questions about how to connect a hard drive of this type to a new computer to save data or use it (if the hdd is working). The simplest solution is to use an IDE to SATA adapter. It is he who will allow you to use the drive with a more modern computer that supports the SATA standard. Such controllers can reduce the cost of updating the technical park of production shops. For the average user, the devices will help save important data.

Drives - a success story

You still have an ATA-IDE hdd and want to equip your new PC with it? Now this is problematic: PC makers have stopped supporting this standard. It was replaced by SATA, the first standard of which appeared in 2003, and the last (version 3.0) in 2009.

If you need to connect an old hard drive, then you need a special controller, it will be able to coordinate various PC components. Usually such a device is called a SATA to IDE adapter; without it, such a connection is simply impossible.

Outdated equipment operating on the slow IDE standard (ide) is many times inferior in performance to devices of a new type, even supporting the very first edition of the SATA standard. But these devices were widespread and are found even now (dvd drives, hdd).

The use of old equipment is very important in the corporate segment. Many programmable machine tools and production lines used PCs with an IDE hard drive as the main data storage. Typically the machines ran under MS-DOS or newer NT / 9x systems. And for such operating systems, connecting to the hard disk using the old protocol is crucial for performance.

What do adapters give?

Very often, industrial, expensive equipment runs on outdated software, for which a special hardware configuration is required. If the hdd fails, the programs can still be restored from the archive or obtained from the equipment manufacturers, but it is problematic to find the old type hdd. It's easier to use an IDE to SATA adapter and plug in the cheapest new drive.

So, with minimal investment, you can restore the performance of an industrial computer. At home, the SATA to IDE adapter will be useful for downloading content from an outdated drive. You can use the old hdd only if it is fully functional. Also, its volume should be quite high (over 80 GB), and the cost should be more than that of an IDE to SATA adapter, otherwise it makes no sense to use such a disk through an expensive adapter. In addition, when we connect the drive to the board through it, the performance of the hdd decreases.

It will not work to make such an adapter with your own hands (difficult and expensive). In addition, there may be hardware incompatibility issues when connecting. And the total cost of making such an adapter with your own hands is unreasonably high.

Using an old OS

For the correct operation of the old system and application programs on more modern equipment (in particular, on hdd), adapters are needed, for example, an IDE converter, which will allow you to connect an old drive to a new motherboard or make a new one work with an old system.

It must be remembered that it is not always possible to work correctly with especially old programs through an adapter. It will help to read and save data, but the work of outdated software can be difficult.

In the case when the SATA IDE converter is used for use in MS-DOS systems or older versions of Windows, errors and crashes are possible. When buying such a device, it is advisable to pay attention to compatibility and system requirements in the technical specifications. In the overwhelming majority of IDE devices SATA, or SATA to IDE, work on Windows XP, and in this system you can enable emulation of correct work with software written for MS-DOS. So such devices will help you connect a SATA drive to an old industrial PC that does not initially support this standard. It will be cheaper than buying a completely new computer and fine-tuning it. How to connect the ide-sata adapter and the process of connecting it, see the video in more detail.

At work, I regularly come across old PCs from which or to which I need to rewrite some information (usually everything that is on the hard drive). Not all computers have a sata interface, and you had to look for a "transit" computer. But with the purchase of this adapter, such a need has disappeared. There is little text and a lot of photos under the cut.

1. Delivery 4/5

Delivery took standard, for a tea post, 30 days. I think this is already the norm; it is unlikely that strong changes await us in this regard.

2. Packing 4/5

A standard bubble wrap for BIK, the adapter itself was in an individual bag. There is no instruction, but it was not needed.

3. Completeness 5/5

This item was especially pleasing, the kit contains everything you need: an adapter, a sata cord and a power cord (although, if possible, it is better to immediately buy an adapter from a 4-pin power connector to a sata cable).

4. Easy to connect 4/5

Everything is simple here, you need to connect the hard drive in accordance with the signatures on the adapter. For IDE screws like this.

And to connect a SATA screw to an old mother without SATA, like this.

Connected.

As you can see, the connection is nothing complicated. But there is one caveat, if you connect an IDE screw through an adapter, the jumper should be in the master position.

5. Ease of use 4/5

Everything is very simple, first we connect the screw as in the picture, load and work :). This is how a screw with an IDE interface connected via an adapter (SATA1) is determined in the BIOS.

And this is how Akronis sees him.

The main advantage of this adapter is that you can not only connect old screws to a new mother, but also vice versa. There is nothing difficult to use, the copy / write speed for the IDE screw visually remained the same.

It is definitely worth taking if you actively use a PC - sooner or later this thing will come in handy for you, and besides, it costs mere pennies.

update: 80GB IDE HDD occupied by 7GB, copied through an adapter to a SATA screw in 3.5 minutes.

How to connect an old IDE hard drive to a new computer

We are often sent letters asking how to connect an ancient hard drive with an IDE interface to a modern computer that does not have outdated connectors, or even to a laptop.

Everything is extremely simple. There are two possibilities.

Permanent connection of the IDE hard drive to the motherboard.

This is done through the appropriate adapter, which is not very expensive, but it is not so easy to find it on sale. The drive is installed inside the system unit as usual and connected using SATA (power and data). But, to be honest, it is not rational to put an old device into a modern computer. It will make noise and crackle heads, and besides, its performance will not be the best. Even the weakest modern hard drive will outperform it in speed by a large margin. It is much more convenient to rewrite all its contents to a new and more capacious model with a SATA interface.

IDE SATA adapter

Closed housing adapter. Otherwise, it is no different from the previous model.

Another adapter option. Compact model from TRENDnet

Temporarily connecting an IDE hard drive using a USB adapter

This option is preferred. Desktop owners do not have to remove the cover of the system unit, and laptop owners cannot do without it. A USB adapter is purchased for connecting IDE hard drives of 2.5 and 3.5 inch form factors. Unfortunately, there are fewer and fewer of them on sale.

But be careful, you can confuse and buy an adapter only for SATA hard drives, of which there are most now. In addition, there will be no useless docking stations, basically they only allow you to connect SATA hard drives.

USB adapter. Includes a nozzle for connecting an IDE 40-pin laptop connector

The most versatile adapter from AgeStar. You can connect any model of hard drives. In addition, this adapter can be used to connect an optical CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drive with IDE interface to a netbook.

However, there is one caveat. The speed of the drive in the first solution will be maximum, since the device is connected directly to the motherboard, and in the second case it will be limited by the USB 2.0 bandwidth (480 Mbps) - in practice, the speed reaches a maximum of 24-26 Mb / s, and even then not always. All adapters with a more advanced USB 3.0 bus allow you to connect only SATA hard drives.

My advice is this. Use USB dongles, but dump your data to a newer drive as soon as possible and ditch the old IDE standard.

We connect the old IDE hard drive to the new motherboard \ JMicron JMB363 PCI-E + 1 eSATA + 1 SATA + 1 IDE

Hello everyone. More and more people are faced with the problem when an old computer 10 years ago breaks down, it is difficult to get spare parts or is expensive, and no one will give a guarantee that it will work.

After buying a new computer, the question arises of how to copy all the data from the old hard drive to the new computer, the old IDE connector is no longer found in the new motherboard. There are various adapter controllers for this.

Review of 3 controllers with tests.

Since I do not have a drive with an IDE connector, I connected it to an old NEC ND-3500AG DVD-ROM, and for the SATA test I connected a Hitachi 500Gb 7200 HDS721050CLA360 drive and used the same SATA cable.

1. The first controller, I have already reviewed it, here I will add a test.

Of all 3 models, this controller soldered the machine, soldering is neat. Installed in a PCI slot, based on the VIA VT6421A chipset, available connectors: 1 SATA + 1 IDE + 4 x USB 2.0. Complete set: box, CD with driver, SATA cable with latches. This controller suits me better, since there are additional 4 x USB 2.0, now more and more gadgets are charged from the USB connector, and all ports are busy.

SATA Hitachi 500Gb 7200 HDS721050CLA360 Test:

The next screen is for comparison, speed test Hitachi 500Gb 7200 HDS721050CLA360, but connected to the SATA connector in the motherboard.

Copying from DVD-ROM to internal storage, movie size 1.81 GB, speed 16 Mb / s, copying time 1m 50s.

2. The second controller, soldered by hand, there are small jambs of soldering, in some places the flux was not washed off, but on the whole it was assembled well. (link to another board, but with this controller)

Assembled on the VIA VT6421A controller, the board is installed in a PCI-E slot, connectors on the board: 1 SATA, 1 eSATA, 1 IDE. Complete set: box, CD with drivers, eSATA cable, IDE cable. When the system was first booted, the system was silent, I had to install drivers, I used DRP software, after a reboot, the disks became visible.

Photo - test

I connected it to two connectors at once, when I turn on the computer, this message pops up, after 2 seconds the download continues. My video card takes up two slots, there is a small gap between it and the controller, this will have a bad effect on the airflow of the video card itself. Or install it into the second slot of the video card.

Rear view, the connector protrudes slightly behind the case, but this is a problem of my personal system unit, in a different case, such a problem most likely will not arise.

SATA test

IDE test, copy movie from DVD-ROM to internal HDD.

IDE and SATA test, copying a movie from DVD-ROM to HDD connected to the same controller, the speed dropped but not much.

3. The third and smallest controller, there are only two SATA and IDE connectors, additional external power is required.

The chip is hard to see, could see such marks DOF B74LE0441. Complete set: blister, SATA cable, adapter cable. Awful soldering, a lot of not washed off flux, went through with a soldering iron and washed off the flux.

Photo - test

And now he is clean, as he should be.

The cable included in the kit did not want to work normally, the length is only 29 cm, if you bend the cable at the bend, the cable turns white, this indicates the cheapness of the cable.

Very often they complain about the 3rd controller, there were cases when this controller spoiled the drives. All controllers work well and do their job well. It is worth mentioning another controller that can be connected to the USB connector, the weak point of these controllers, these are external power supplies, fail very quickly.

If you have any questions, I will be happy to answer them, ask!

Every day in the modern world there are more and more laptops, which, in turn, are improved and modernized. However, this does not mean at all that users are actively abandoning the stationary computers we are used to.

Undoubtedly, the main advantage of a laptop is its portability and small size. However, even more important is the advantage of a stationary computer over a laptop - it is the possibility of upgrading and upgrading.

Perhaps the most common form of improving the "iron horse" is increasing physical memory. That is why in this article we will try to figure out how to connect a second hard drive to a computer.

Types of hard drives

There are two main types of internal hard drives, which differ in connection connectors, namely SATA and IDE.

The first connection interface is considered more modern and is used today on all motherboards. As for the IDE connector, this technology is somewhat outdated and, accordingly, you can find hard drives and motherboards with these connectors only on outdated stationary computers.

Laptop and additional hard drive

There are several ways to connect a second hard drive to your laptop. By far the easiest is to purchase an external USB drive. There is a huge selection of these devices in stores today. The size of memory on external hard drives is in no way inferior to internal hard drives. Having bought such a device, you can easily connect it to your laptop yourself at any time.

The advantage of such a hard drive is that before connecting a second hard drive to a computer, Windows 7, like any other operating system, does not have to be turned off, since this device has a hot plug function.

In the event that it is not possible to purchase an external drive, you can get a special adapter that allows you to connect an ordinary hard drive via the USB port. Also, for more convenient use of such an adapter, there are special containers that are used as a box for the disc.

You just need to plug this container into a USB port and put a hard drive into it, after which an additional device in the form of a hard drive will appear on your laptop.

Connecting an additional hard drive to the computer

Sometimes it happens that connecting a second hard drive to a computer is not necessary in order to increase the size of the device's memory, but only in order to transfer any information from one computer to another. It would seem that it is much easier to do this using a flash drive, but when the size of this information exceeds 80-100 GB, it becomes much more convenient to perform the transfer using the connection of two hard drives to one computer.

Before connecting a second hard drive to the computer, you need to make sure that the motherboard has free ports for connection. Be sure to turn off the power to the computer and unplug it before performing any of these work.

Hard drive and IDE connector

In order to understand how to connect a second hard drive with an IDE connector to a computer, let's see what this type of connection is.

As a rule, on modern motherboards, this type of connection is established less and less. The ribbon cable used to connect the hard drive to the motherboard is quite thin. Its main feature is the ability to connect multiple devices to one motherboard connector. That is, there are only 3 IDE connectors on such a cable, one of which connects to the motherboard, and the other two to devices - a hard drive and a CD-ROM.

Connect a second hard drive. SATA connector

If it becomes necessary to connect a second hard drive to the computer, first of all pay attention to the type of hard drive connector. If it is a SATA connector, check right away that your motherboard supports these interfaces.

Then prepare a wire with SATA connectors at both ends. Connect one side to the hard drive, and the other to a free SATA port on the motherboard. Even on the simplest boards of these interfaces, at least two pieces are installed.

When installing a loop into the connector, you do not have to worry, since a special key has been developed on the plug, thanks to which the possibility of incorrect connection is excluded. That is why you can replace the hard drive or add it yourself.

Connecting the power connector

In addition to data transfer cables, be it SATA or IDE, the hard drive needs power, which it receives through a separate connector and a separate wire.

When the IDE hard drive is connected, the power cable looks like this.

It has 4 contacts. There is also a key on the connector so you never go wrong with the connection position. This connector has a rectangular shape, and the key is 2 rounded corners on one longitudinal side.

The power bus for SATA hard drives looks a little different.

It has a flatter shape, but at the same time it is also equipped with a special key, so incorrect connection is completely excluded.

Choosing a hard drive

Today there are a huge number of manufacturers of computer equipment and components for it. The same goes for hard drives. In order to make the right choice in favor of a particular hard drive, you need to decide what you need it for.

There are several main parameters of the hard drive that you should pay attention to. The first is definitely the volume of the media. By far the largest is the 4TB disk. However, this figure is constantly growing, and within a year it may become 2 or even 3 times higher.

The second value is the speed of its work. Namely - the speed of access to the disk and writing to it. Today there are hard drives working on SSD technology, in another way they are called "solid-state media". The speed of their work significantly exceeds the speed of conventional rigid ones, but their volume is several times less. The price of such discs is very high today.

Based on these parameters and your personal preferences, you can competently and most importantly - it is practical to choose the hard disk you need.

Many do not know how to connect a second hard drive to a computer, and therefore hand over their system units to the service. However, after reading this article, it becomes clear that this is not difficult at all.

How should the correct Installing and connecting a hard drive. Where are we going to install it? The housing contains compartments for devices. The upper bays of the case are usually intended for installing a CD / DVD drive. And the lower compartments, which are shown in the picture, are intended for installing a hard drive.

We choose any compartment and put the hard drive there. How will we arrange it? It is necessary to place it so that the hard drive connectors face into the case.

Everything. We inserted the disc, now it needs to be bolted. As you can see in the picture, there are corresponding mounting holes in the case.

Make sure that the holes on the disc line up with the holes in the body. We will tighten the bolts in them.

How many bolts should there be? It is desirable that there are four bolts. Two on one side and two on the other.

Having screwed the disk on one side, unfold the case and screw on the other side.

We fixed Winchester. Check that it does not move, if the disc wobbles, then tighten the bolts more firmly.

Installing the hard drive the building is completed.

Connecting a SATA and IDE hard drive

Now we will figure out how to connect a hard drive with SATA and IDE interfaces. ... The hard drive can be connected to the motherboard using either the narrow SATA cable or the wide IDE cable shown in the picture.

Connecting a SATA hard drive.

If your hard drive is connected using SATA interfaces, then we take this cable and connect one end to the hard drive, and the other to the corresponding connector on the motherboard.

We have a SATA hard drive connected.

Connecting an IDE hard drive

Connecting a disk using an IDE cable has its own peculiarities. The colored end of the cable, in our case the blue end (as a rule, it is the longest), should be connected to the motherboard.

The other two ends, marked in the figure, connect to either a hard disk drive or a CD / DVD drive.

The peculiarity of IDE is that two devices can be connected to one cable.

Important! If we connect two devices to one cable, then one of the devices must be
priority.

There are two modes:

  • Master - This is a device connected to the IDE cable closest to the motherboard. MASTER it is recommended to connect the main hard drive with the operating system.
  • Slave is a device on a catfish plug that is distant from the motherboard. SLAVE(not the main thing) it is recommended to connect a CD / DVD drive or another, not the main second hard drive

Note that there is a key on the plug. (highlighted in the picture)

And in the connector on the system board, there is also a turnkey protrusion. It is necessary that these protrusions coincide.

We insert the cable into the connector and lightly press on it from above so that it is securely fixed on the board.

The cable is connected. Now we need to connect it to the hard drive.
We take the cable and, in accordance with the keys (there is a key on the cable and on the hard disk), insert it into the disk.

Attention!

In any particular case, you may need to independently set the mode (Master or Slave) for each of the IDE devices using a jumper on this device.

That's all. We have a hard drive installed and connected, I hope you succeed.
