Connecting the power supply to the computer. How to properly connect the power supply to the computer

We start by installing the power supply in the case system block . All wires that come out of the power supply must be routed inside the case.

We take the power supply and lower it into the case (see figure). Then, we adjust it to a specially designated place.

We placed it at the top of the computer case. In this position he will be with us.

Now, we need to fix it. We fix it in the corresponding sockets for the bolts shown in the picture.


Next, take four bolts and screw into each hole.


Screw it harder (but not too hard so as not to strip the thread), as it weighs quite a lot and must be securely fastened.

Connecting the power supply to the motherboard

Now we will consider connecting the power supply to the motherboard and different kind devices. And let's figure out which cable connects to which device.

Let's start with the largest cable. This is the main power cable motherboard, with 24-pin ATX connector. It must be connected to the next socket on system board(indicated in the figure).

The cable has a latch (see figure below) that allows you to remove the cable from the connector.


You need to look on the system board, which side is the latch for the latch, on the left or on the right.


Power is connected to the motherboard. Now we have to connect HDD and CD/DVD drive.

HDD


As for nutrition hard drive, there are two types of connectors. The power connector shown in the figure is used in drives with IDE interface and CD/DVD drives.

If you are using SATA, then you need to connect with a thin black power cable (see picture below).

In this case, I will use food for IDE drives. It must be positioned correctly.
If we look at this cable closer, we will see (see image) that the corners are cut off. This serves to ensure that the cable is inserted correctly, and not vice versa and the device does not burn out. However, there are cases when the cable is connected the other way around.

CD/DVD drive


We connect the CD / DVD drive in the same way as a hard drive.

CPU


Now our task is to connect power to the processor. We will connect power to the processor using a 4-pin or 8-pin cable (shown in the figure). It all depends on specific model motherboard. You need to look at the connector that is near the processor.

V this case, I have a 4-pin connector (marked in the picture).

I'll tell you about the latch. It uses the same fixing method as in the power cable for the motherboard. On one side of the connector there is a ledge for the latch (marked in the picture).

Therefore, we will install in the direction where there is a special ledge.

On the rear panel of system power supplies there are many sockets designed to connect the main components computer system. Connecting them is not difficult at all, given that all plug-in sockets have a different shape.

How to connect wires to the system unit

Our task is to connect cords from external peripherals to the system unit. The cords are connected to the motherboard panel, video card, power supply, internal modem, depending on the devices installed in the computer. Some connectors have small protrusions, so you do not need to try to hard connect them to the socket.

Important! All connections (except USB devices) must be made with the computer turned off. So, you need to move the switch from the “1-on” position to the “0-off” position. This turns off the power from the system unit.

Keyboard and mouse

Let's start by connecting the keyboard and mouse. Their connectors are identical in shape and have a key inside that simplifies connection. It is undesirable to make a mistake when connecting them, since there is a risk of certain damage: the mouse, keyboard, or the controller ports themselves on the motherboard are burned.

In addition, it should be noted that PS / 2 ports still have differences - these are different markings. The keyboard is usually marked purple, and the mouse is green. The connectors on the back of the motherboard are connected in the same way, each to a socket of the same color.

For more modern computers PS / 2 port can be two-color (half lilac, half green). This means that you can insert both a mouse and a keyboard. Since the latter have USB connectors. PS / 2 ports work only after rebooting the computer.

An old-style comport mouse or some kind of comport device can also be connected through the output, as from a video card, with the only difference being that its pins are external. The output is used, for example, for an old printer, stationary industrial scales or other equipment designed specifically for this port.

Additional Information. Cord connectors have a guide pin that must be aligned with the appropriate socket. When inserting, lightly press on the connector to lock the position. Another cord is also connected to the mouse connector.

USB connections

For USB connections wires from external USB device(printer, keyboard, mouse) you can use any of the USB ports on the rear panel. The USB connector has a special design, which eliminates its incorrect connection. USB cord marked special badge, which can be seen, and next to the connector.

Acoustic system

On some processors, there may be two such outputs: for the integrated video card and power for the monitor. The connector on the cord has a certain shape, which eliminates its incorrect connection. It is fixed in the connector with two clamps.

After all the peripherals are connected, the wires are neatly placed, and there is no confusion in them, you can connect the cable to the network, click the toggle switch.

How to connect the wires to the front board

Many people have difficulty connecting wires to the motherboard. In fact, several blocks of pins are important:

  • orange - episyspeaker, the same squeaker that beeps, signaling the passage of POST codes or a malfunction at startup;
  • red - POWER button that turns off / on the computer;
  • blue - hard drive signal with a blinking light;
  • green - REZET reset button;
  • gray - built-in open case sensor;
  • purple - POWER LET colored light that indicates the system is on.

By the type of connection to these blocks, the connectors are 2- or 3-pin. Each of them has its own marking. An arrow on one of the pins indicates a positive contact.

It is advisable to observe the polarity of some pins when connecting. Some manufacturers specifically suggest where the plus is and where the minus is, so that there is no confusion with polarity. The cross is a plus. If you position the motherboard so that the inscriptions are read, all positive contacts will be on the left.

Installing a new power supply

Step 1

Make sure your power source is strong enough to fully power your computer. CPU and video card will use highest power. If there is not enough power, your computer may run slowly or not start at all.

Make sure the power supply you buy will fit your form factor. Usually it is ATX or mATX.

Turn the computer case on its side. This provides best access to the location of the power supply.

Open the computer case. In order to access the power supply, you may need to remove some of the PC components. Most often it is the CPU cooler.

Install the power supply in the computer case. Most modern cases have a special chassis that greatly simplifies installation. If not, install new source power supply, just like the previous one was located.

Make sure all fans on the power supply are not blocked and that it aligns with all 4 screws on the chassis. If this is not the case, then the power supply may not be installed correctly.

Tighten all fixing screws outside and inside the case.

Connect the connectors. After the computer's power supply is fixed, you can start connecting the power cables to the computer's motherboard.

Note: make sure no components are left out and place the wires so they don't get in the way of the coolers. If you have unused cables from the power supply, carefully fold them to the side (if you have a cable tie, you can use it).

Connect the 20/24 pin connector to the motherboard. This is the largest connector on the power supply. Most modern motherboards require a 24-pin connector, and older motherboards will only use the first 20 pins. Some power supplies have a detachable 4-pin connector to make connecting older motherboards easier.

Connect 12V power to the motherboard. Older motherboards use a 4-pin connector, while newer motherboards use an 8-pin. It provides power to the processor and should be clearly labeled on the cable or in your power supply documentation.

Connect your video card. Graphics systems middle and high class require one or more 6- and 8-pin connectors. They will be labeled as PCI-E.

Close the cover of the system unit. Plug in the power supply and make sure the switch on the back is turned on.

Turn on your computer. If everything is connected and working properly, the fan on the power supply should turn on and your computer will boot into normal mode. If you hear sound signal and nothing happens, then most likely something inside is not connected correctly or the power supply is not providing enough power to your components.

We connect the case buttons to the motherboard

In most cases, manufacturers refer to it as "F_Panel", "Front Panel", or simply "Panel". If the instruction is lost, you just need to carefully examine the motherboard and find on it this group connectors.

  1. First, connect the power button connector to the board power supply SW (Power Switch). The place for it on the motherboard is designated as "PWR_BTN". Since this is a button, not an indicator, the polarity of connecting the power button to the motherboard does not matter. The power button cable can be connected in either direction.
  2. Next, we connect the forced reset button Reset SW (Reset Switch). The location for this connector on the motherboard is labeled "Reset" or "RESET_SW" and is located directly below the power button connector. In this case, the polarity also does not matter.
  3. We connect the indicators of the system unit to the motherboard

When connecting the indicators, it is important to observe the polarity, otherwise they simply will not burn. On the board itself, the polarity is indicated by the symbols "+" and "-".

It should also be present on the connectors. If it is not there or not visible, then you should use the hint: the white wire is a minus, the colored wire is a plus.

The place for the PC on / off indicator connector (Power Led) on the motherboard is designated as "PWR_LED", for connecting the HDD Led connector - "HDD_LED".

If, after starting the computer, any of the indicators does not work, simply reconnect the connector by turning it to the other side.

Similarly, other connectors coming from the system unit case are connected to the motherboard - SPEAKER, HD Audio and USB.
